This article examines the religious and therapeutic world of American priest Father John Francis Harvey (1918-2010), founding director of Courage, an apostolate of the Catholic Church centered on ministering to Catholic homosexuals. The following offers a close reading of Harvey's first full-length book, The Homosexual Person: New Thinking in Pastoral Care, published in 1987. I argue that though Harvey borrowed from the psychological thought that influenced the Protestant ex-gay movement, he offered a distinctly Catholic form of pastoral counseling for homosexuals that advanced Courage's religious and therapeutic goal of chastity, rather than the Protestant ex-gay ministry groups' focus on heterosexual conversion. The 2008 financial crisis had profound impacts on government finances across the United States, including a lasting decrease in public pension funding levels. Today state and local governments in the United States have trillions of dollars in unfunded public pension liabilities, and the financial condition of pension systems has material impacts on borrowing costs, service delivery, and taxation, as well as retirement security. Local governments have been tasked with shoring up their pension systems while also grappling with sluggish revenue recovery, a situation that compounds already existing fiscal issues. Building on extant scholarship on crisis, austerity urbanism, and pragmatic municipalism, we examine the practice of "shorting" pension systems among Illinois municipalities and a state law meant to strengthen the fiscal health of local pension systems by curbing that practice. Using the case of the City of Harvey, a suburb of Chicago, we show how municipal finance and seemingly neutral policies aimed at ensuring fiscal health can trigger austerity actions that deepen fiscal stress for racialized communities. By examining Illinois' pension fund landscape and proposing avenues for further research, we contribute to larger conversations about how governance, property, and pensions are inextricably intertwined with persistent racial inequality. The term “peri-urbanization” refers to the process through which cities are forced to expand into surrounding territories. The onset of economic globalisation, liberalisation, and transnational corporations’ migration from core to peripheral countries in pursuit of cheap labour and resources, together with the population growth brought on by both internal and foreign migration, are the driving forces behind this phenomenon. The village of Kabala, in the rural commune of Kalabancoro, southwest of Bamako, Mali, has experienced rapid urbanization and the resultant urban sprawl, as in other African countries. This has resulted in the transformation of the land and social relations. It has led to the disappearance of agricultural land in favour of buildings. It also led to a conflicting and collaborative relationship between the customary institutions and modern apparatuses of governance. Land has been transformed from a source of livelihood and survival to an object in the commodity market. Faced with the anarchic urban sprawl of the village boundaries, the local people express their concern about transforming their land. The study has been placed within the analytical frame work of “Space” proposed by David Harvey and Henri Lefebvre, which enables the capture of the larger political and economic drivers of peri-urban spaces and the creation of diverse subjectivities at the local level. The study concludes that anarchic urban sprawl creates hegemonic peri-urban spaces in which the local inhabitants have to acquiesce to the modern state apparatuses of governance, but not without opening a space of liberated life for those the traditional institutions have historically controlled. This study investigates the relative impact of assimilating the ground‐based WSR‐88D radar (GBR) and the airborne Tail Doppler Radar (TDR) observations on the analysis and prediction of Hurricane Harvey (2017) during its landfalling stage. Results show that the assimilation of GBR (experiment "DAG") outperforms the assimilation of TDR (experiment "DAT") in multiple aspects. For example, "DAG" produces better predictions in Vmax, radial velocity, brightness temperature, and precipitation than "DAT." The advantages of "DAG" over "DAT" are likely from the better analyzed thermodynamical structures in addition to the better data availability. The average Minimum Sea Level Pressure (MSLP) prediction error is the only aspect of "DAG" that is inferior to "DAT." Diagnostics show that such an inferior performance of MSLP for "DAG" is associated with the systematic bias from the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting model. The combined assimilation of both observations (experiment "DAB") shows complementary effects and performs the best overall among all experiments. Plain Language Summary: The Ground‐based WSR‐88D Radar (GBR) and the airborne tail Doppler Radar (TDR) observations have been separately assimilated and evaluated in the analysis and prediction of landfalling hurricanes in the past. This study explores their relative and combined impacts. Using a newly developed, GSI‐based, hourly hybrid three‐dimensional ensemble‐Kalman‐Filter‐Variational data assimilation system for the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting, experiments are performed for the landfalling stage of Hurricane Harvey (2017). Results showed that the continuous availability allows GBR to produce better and more persistent improvements in the analysis and the subsequent forecasts than TDR. Investigations show that the improvements are not only in the wind fields but also in the precipitation and brightness temperature predictions. The combined assimilation shows complementary effects and further improves upon GBR alone. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey was one of the most destructive storms to make landfall in the Houston area, causing loss of life and property. Temporal and spatial changes in the depth of floodwater and the extent of inundation form an essential part of flood studies. This work estimates the flood extent and depth from LiDAR DEM (light detection and ranging digital elevation model) using data from the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)–Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) and satellite sensor—Sentinel-1. The flood extent showed a decrease between 29–30 August and 5 September 2017. The flood depths estimated using the DEM were compared with the USGS gauge data and showed a correlation (R2) greater than 0.88. The use of Sentinel-1 and UAVSAR resulted in a daily temporal repeat, which helped to document the changes in the flood area and the water depth. These observations are significant for efficient disaster management and to assist relief organizations by providing spatially precise information for the affected areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The main objective of this study is to compare the Harvey Logistic Growth Models, Harvey, and the Nonlinear Autoregressive Neural Network, and to design and find a model with better predictive accuracy for the Tehran Stock Exchange data. This model is nevertheless highly dependent on past values, has high fluctuations, and shows nonlinear motion patterns which have been repeatedly neglected. Methods: In this study, the "Harvey Logistic" Growth Models, Harvey and the addition of nonlinear components based on the Taylor series expansion for trigonometric functions were studied to compare the accuracy and prediction of these models based on prediction criteria and its results with the nonlinear autoregressive neuronal network. Daily data of fluctuations from 1393 until 1395 of the total stock index, which was divided into two categories, were used as the sample pool in this study. Results: The results of the unit root tests such as Dickey-Fuller and BDS test show that the data is stationary and has a nonlinear property. In the estimation stage, the goodness of fit for the Logistic and Harvey models show that both models have a high root mean square error and low coefficient of determination for the four data types. By adding the nonlinear parts to the Harvey model, a good fit was obtained for the stock index with a coefficient of determination of about 99.8 percent and minimum root mean square error, even when compared with the nonlinear autoregressive neural network. Conclusion: The results of the research show that combining the Harvey model with the nonlinear component could be considered as one of the models which predict the Tehran Stock Exchange index better than the other models.

Greco–Roman concepts regarding the circulation persisted until the 1600s even though many were incorrect. It was held that blood flows in veins from the liver to the periphery where it is consumed. It was not until the 1500s that anatomists identified venous valves and explored their function. This, in part, allowed William Harvey to describe the circulation as we know it today. This study included review of the literature and translations of William Harvey's books including De Motu Co]rdis which were published in 1628. Harvey's description of the venous circulation started the intense exploration of venous physiology that continues today. The resultant concepts of venous reflux associated with varicose disease have allowed practitioners to develop contemporary management.

La historia de la modernidad, como relato de la victoria de la racionalidad humana sobre toda forma de barbarie o superstición, no podría comprenderse adecuadamente sin un fenómeno un tanto paradójico que, antes que definir los estatutos del alma o de la res cogitans, encuentra su fundamento en una problematización de lo corporal. En este artículo examinaremos algunas analogías mecanicistas del cuerpo desde el punto de vista médico-terapéutico, como un sistema compuesto por articulaciones, engranes, flujos, circuitos, mecanismos, etc., con su propia lógica interna e independiente de las leyes del universo. Se esboza una discusión clave para la historia tanto de la fisiología como de la filosofía mecanicista que tiene como exponentes a William Harvey y a René Descartes, para examinar más a fondo algunos presupuestos metafísicos del francés que darán lugar al nacimiento del modelo político de las disciplinas, tal como es analizado por Michel Foucault.

The wall paintings adorning the south transept apse of Santa Maria at Terrassa are among the most notable surviving items pertaining to the iconography of St. Thomas Becket. Recently found documents in which diplomatic archives reveal English connections are essential for understanding the quick reception of the Becket cult in the Crown of Aragon. The presence of an Anglo-Norman canon—Arveus or Harveus (Harvey)—and his position of scribe during the second half of the twelfth century when Reginald, probably also of English origin, was prior there—seem to be the likely source of inspiration for this project. These English connections, which are essential for understanding the quick reception of the Becket cult in the Crown of Aragon, stemmed from the endeavours undertaken some years earlier south of the Pyrenees by the abbot of Saint-Ruf at Avignon, Nicholas Breakspear, who subsequently became Pope Adrian IV.

Hieronymus Fabricius ab Acquapendente, famous anatomist of the medical school of Padua, Italy, marked a further step not only in the morphological studies, but also in anatomical illustration and physiology. His researches were inspired by the work of Aristotle which was focused on the understanding of biological "functions" in an anatomo-comparative way. The anatomo-comparative approach of Fabrici allowed him to discover several specific features of human anatomy. His focusing on function marked the transition from a descriptive to a functional anatomy, paving the way to the birth of human physiology in the following century. To enhance the teaching and learning of anatomy, Fabrici realized the importance of the "dimension" and "color" of anatomical illustrations and introduced for first full-scale and colour painted plates. In this way, the images were closer to representing "living" parts, than previous black & white and low scale images. Moreover, Fabrici was the first to create an "anatomo-phisiological" image, namely the one representing the valves in the veins. Hurricane Harvey was the wettest hurricane in US history bringing record rainfall and widespread flooding in Houston, TX. The resulting storm- and floodwaters largely emptied into the Galveston Bay. Surface water was collected from 10 stations during five cruises to investigate the concentrations and sources of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and relative abundances of PAH-degrading bacteria. Highest PAH levels (102–167 ng/L) were detected during the first sampling event, decreasing to 36–69 ng/L within a week. Four sites had elevated concentrations of carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene that exceeded the Texas Standard for Surface Water threshold. The highest relative abundances of known PAH-degrading bacteria Burkholderiaceae, Comamonadaceae, and Sphingomonadales were detected during the first and second sampling events. PAH origins were about 60% pyrogenic, 2% petrogenic, and the remainder of mixed sources. This study improves our understanding on the fate, source, and distributions of PAHs in Galveston Bay after an extreme flooding event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For two millennia the heart was considered to be the seat of intelligence, motion and sensation. Thomas Hobbes's friend William Harvey revolutionised the understanding of the heart by demonstrating how blood circulates, and correctly identifying the function of the heart as propulsion. Soon after the publication of De Motu Cordis, Descartes redefined the heart as a 'pump', and Hobbes as a 'spring'. In these mechanistic and rationalist systems the heart lost its prestige, and could no longer be considered the source of sensation and emotion. Harvey did not, however, seek to displace the heart from its traditional position in metaphysical anatomy, but by retaining an Aristotelean interest in causes, continued to promote the centrality of the heart in ways that have persisted in philosophy, theology and literature even to the present day. Udotea geppiorum is reported to form meadows in deep-water, soft sediment habitats in the Main Hawaiian Islands. The identification of the species, initially published as U. argentea in the archipelago, is revised and confirmed based on morphological assessment and comparative DNA sequencing with western Pacific specimens. Udotea geppiorum is fully corticated and newly shown to display discrete concentric segments arranged in a 'tongue and groove' manner, which are connected by medullary siphons running along the entire segment interface. Udotea geppiorum is phylogenetically nested among a cluster of Udotea spp. recently circumscribed within Udotea sensu stricto. This cluster of species is separate from the remainder of the family Udoteaceae, which includes several genera and Udotea spp. sensu lato that lack or exhibit incomplete cortication. Based on field observations conducted in O'ahu and Maui, U. geppiorum can be found from 20 m to > 90 m depth with a peak in abundance at mesophotic depths of 60–85 m, where it forms extensive meadows that support associated diversity. This report is the first in a series of four reports that describe the results of accelerated pavement tests on full-scale pavements with “wet” base conditions at the Pavement Research Center, located at the University of California Berkeley Richmond Field Station (RFS). The report contains a summary of the results and associated analysis of a pavement section comprised of three lifts of asphalt concrete, an asphalt treated permeable base (ATPB) layer, and untreated aggregate base layers on top of a prepared subgrade and designated as Section 543. The pavement section is a termed a “drained’ pavement due to the inclusion of an ATPB layer between the asphalt concrete layers and the untreated aggregate base. Tests on this test section have been performed as part of the Goal 5 Accelerated Test Program for the evaluation of drained and undrained pavements under conditions of water infiltration.

The article discusses a variety of American folklore, literary and cinematic sources underlying the image of the invisible oversized anthropomorphic rabbit, the protagonist of the famous comedy Harvey (1943) by Mary Chase. These are: Manabozo, Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit, and Bugs Bunny. Chase’s Harvey, who is either a ghostly double or a supernatural trickster (phooka), influences virtually every character of this American philosophical comedy. It is Harvey’s ambiguous ontological status that ensures the reader’ and the viewer’s reception of the comedy’s multilayered meaning, in particular its ‘anti-psychiatric’ message. The final section of the paper focuses not only on the Hollywood screen version, Henry Kostner’s comedy Harvey (1950), but also on the imagery of fantastic rabbits in such American movies as Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1995), Donnie Darko (2001), and Inland Empire (2006).

Abstract In the event of a flood disaster, first response agencies need inundation maps produced in near real time (NRT). Such maps can be generated using satellite-based information. In this study, we developed mapping techniques that rely on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on-board earth-orbiting platforms. SAR provides valid ground surface measurements through cloud cover with high resolution and sampling frequency that has recently increased through multiple missions. Despite numerous efforts, automatic processing of SAR data to derive accurate inundation maps still poses challenges. To address them, we have developed an NRT system named RAdar-Produced Inundation Diary (RAPID). RAPID integrates four processing steps: classification based on statistics, morphological processing, multi-threshold-based compensation, and machine-learning correction. Besides SAR data, the system integrates multisource remote-sensing data products, including land cover classification, water occurrence, hydrographical, water type, and river width products. In comparison to expert handmade flood maps, the fully-automated RAPID system exhibited "overall," "producer," and "user" accuracies of 93%, 77%, and 75%, respectively. RAPID accommodates commonly encountered over- and under-detections caused by noise-like speckle, water-like radar response areas, strong scatterers, and isolated inundation areas—errors that are in common practice to ignore, mask out, or be filtered out by coarsening the effective resolution. RAPID can serve as the kernel algorithm to derive flood inundation products from satellites—both existing and to be launched—equipped with high-resolution SAR sensors, including Envisat, Radarsat, NISAR, Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS)-1/2, Sentinel-1, and TerraSAR-X. Highlights • We built a fully automated system to retrieve inundation maps from high resolution SAR images. • Statistical, morphological and machine learning approaches are integrated. • The system extensively uses multi-source remote sensing ancillary data. • The system can detect both connected and isolated open flood areas. • The system shown reliable performance in state scale during multiple flood events. In order to examine whether the usual identification of neoliberal ideas with an ideological discourse is valid, this paper starts off with an analysis of what Marx terms commodity fetishism in Capital, based on which a certain sense of the concept of ideology may be inferred which would result in its being both true and false. In order to determine whether this definition of ideology may be applied to neoliberal theory, we look at its fundamental features and how they continue with or break away from economic liberalism as studied in Michel Foucault’s Birth of biopolitics. Attention is later moved to the characteristics detected by David Harvey in the socalled flexible accumulation as the latest stage of capitalism which coincides with the political implementation of neoliberal doctrine. At the end of the road travelled, it is hypothesised that this theory would be a form of ideology containing a dimension of both truth and falsehood, in line with Marx’s thought.

The article is a complex attempt to present the achievements of the broadly understood urban Marxism in the field of reinterpretation of the classic concept from the cards of Capital – “primitive accumulation”. Drawing on theories of such scholars as David Harvey (“accumulation by dispossession”) or Saskia Sassen (“expulsions”), the author points to the possible ways to operationalize the concept of “dispossessing urbanization”. Inspired by the theorizations of autonomist Marxists (Antonio Negri, Sandro Mezzadra, Massimo De Angelis), he proposes to see it as a relatively new and increasingly important dispostif that allows not only to improve traditional methods of enclosures and construct entirely new ones, but also to instrumentalize urban cultures which seems unlikely for the historical versions of primitive accumulation. This theoretical inspiration leads him also to highlight another gap in the accumulation by dispossession theory, namely the lack of sufficient reflection on the production of subjectivity processes which seem constitutive for the broad set of dispossessing practices.

Accurate information on atmospheric temperature of tropical cyclones (TCs) is important for monitoring and prediction of their developments and evolution. For hurricanes, temperature anomaly in the upper troposphere can be derived from Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) and Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) through either regression-based or variational retrieval algorithms. This study investigates the dependency of TC warm core structure on emission and scattering processes in the forward operator used for radiance computations in temperature retrievals. In particular, the precipitation scattering at ATMS high-frequency channels can significantly change the retrieval outcomes. The simulation results in this study reveal that the brightness temperatures at 183 GHz could be depressed by 30-50 K under cloud ice water path of 1.5 mm, and thus, the temperature structure in hurricane atmosphere could be distorted if the ice cloud scattering was inaccurately characterized in the retrieval system. It is found that for Hurricanes Irma, Maria, and Harvey that occurred in 2017, their warm core anomalies retrieved from ATMS temperature sounding channels 4-15 were more reasonable and realistic, compared with the retrievals from all other channel combinations and earlier hurricane simulation results. This article summarizes the main points under debate between David Harvey and John Smith concerning international value transfers and labor superexploitation. It evaluates that superexploitation is more than a descriptive term, rather a central concept for understanding contemporary imperialism. The article assesses claims concerning the rise of China in Africa, and argues that neocolonialism is a general condition that has been modified but not superseded by the rise of the BRICS. The article argues that Harvey's misreading of global imperialism is connected to his mistinterpretation of Marx's Capital, and concludes that international solidarity against neocolonialism is required.
