Abstract

The effect of agarose gel coating on tapered fiber ability to detect relative humidity changes was studied here. Agarose gel is a hydrophilic material commonly used for relative humidity sensing. Tapered fiber makes a good choice for sensing structure due to evanescent mode interaction with the external surroundings. Two different types of tapered fiber were studied, plastic and silica, each type was used to construct a separate sensing structure. In the relative humidity range of 50-80%RH, agarose coated silica tapered fiber showed a sensitivity of 0.1054dB/%RH compared to the 0.0106 dB/RH% sensitivity of the uncoated silica fiber. On the other hand, tapered plastic fiber coated with agarose showed a sensitivity of 0.0228mV/%RH compared to the uncoated plastic fiber sensitivity of 0.0028mV/RH%. Abstract

In our study, we employed a Mo2TiAlC2 thin film as a passive saturable absorber (SA) to create a stable pulsed fibre laser at 1564.52 nm. We synthesized a Mo2TiAlC2-PVA thin film with a 6% modulation depth and a 10 MW/cm2 saturation intensity. This thin film was integrated into the laser cavity between FC/PC fibre connectors, enabling Q-switching over a pump power range of 30 mW to 120 mW. This resulted in an increased repetition rate from 31.1 kHz to 66.83 kHz and a reduced pulse duration from 13.45 µs to 6.35 µs. The pulse train's stability was confirmed by a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 58 dB. The laser achieved a maximum output power of 6.56 mW and a pulse energy of 98.16 nJ. These results demonstrate Mo2TiAlC2 as a viable Q-switching modulator in the 1.55-µm wavelength range, with promising applications in compact and efficient pulsed fibre lasers. Abstract

A surface-mounted tilt sensor was designed and fabricated to measure the inclination angle of engineered structures or slopes in two directions. The device utilizes two strain-sensitive fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) for tilt angle measurement bidirectionally and one strain-free FBG to provide temperature compensation. In this work, a tilt sensor prototype was fabricated using a 3-D printer, with a robust enclosure and a miniature actuator with dimensions of $115\times 65\times30$ mm and $45\times 20\times $ 3 mm, respectively. The device was first calibrated in the laboratory for tilt and temperature parameters. For tilt calibration, the device yields a sensitivity value of 0.0135 and 0.0123 nm/° for + x- and– ${x}$ -directions. On the other hand, the device delivers a sensitivity value of 0.0105 nm/°C as the response to temperature changes. The tilt sensor was also tested for suitability in a real-field deployment where it was installed on a retaining wall and was left for four weeks. The field test data indicate no vertical displacement of the wall since the device exhibits zero inclination changes during the test period. This compact, robust, and easy-to-install tilt sensor has excellent potential for various geotechnical applications, mainly in landslide detections, ground movement, and engineered slope monitoring.

Abstract

The development of reliable, lightweight, and effective sensors is a vital step in effectively monitoring critical parameter changes. This review focuses on the utilization of tapered optical fiber as a material sensing platform. The fundamental concept of the tapered fiber sensor is based on the interaction of strong evanescent waves caused by the fiber's dimensional change. The primary goal of this review is to explore the potential of tapered optical fiber for biosensing applications. A number of tapered optical fiber configurations and operations have been reviewed in order to propose appropriate optical sensor designs for biosensing applications. Abstract

Mode-locking is an ultra-short pulse laser generation technique. The range of pulse duration may vary from picoseconds to femtoseconds. Yttrium Oxide (Y2O3) based saturable absorber (SA) was appropriately revealed in the mode-locked method within the 1.55-micron regime. Y2O3 is perfect for strength, melting point, and chemical stability and can be used as a laminated insulator due to its properties. Moreover, Y2O3 also owns broadband service, switching speed, and engineering features. The Y2O3-PVA film was produced by combining the 50 mg Y2O3 powder into a 50 mL polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution and stirring it at room temperature for about 24 h. A mode-locked pulse was recorded with the integrated Y2O3-PVA SA in the erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) cavity, and the output spectrum optical spectrum analyzer displayed was around 1560.66 nm. In addition to the sustained mode-locked pulse, a nearly constant repetition rate of 1.01 MHz at a specific pump power begins from 175.87 mW to 228.04 mW while the pulse duration is 4.15 ps. Lastly, the mode-locked pulse had been evaluated, which showed the peak power started from 4.94 kW to 6.07 kW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
