Effective educational tools are needed to facilitate learning of organismal and ecological sciences in the virtual setting. For entomology laboratory classes, physically collecting insects and curating them in formal collections encompass the traditional learning and assessment tools to introduce students to the natural world and increase their curiosity and interest in insects. Virtual learning, however, creates issues with this modality. Using pre- and post-surveys across five universities based on a new lab activity, we sought to determine whether using a digital platform named iNaturalist stimulated observation, curiosity, and interest in insects. iNaturalist positively affected each measure, most strikingly among biology and zoology majors who increased observation by 15%, curiosity in identification by 39%, and interest by 16%. Increases in observation and curiosity in insects were positively correlated with increases in interest in entomology as a whole. Our findings suggest that virtual tools such as iNaturalist may promote positive course outcomes.

The laurel wilt disease complex is a destructive combination of a non-native beetle vector [redbay ambrosia beetle (RAB), Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae)] and a symbiotic fungus (Harringtonia lauricola (Ophiostomataceae) T.C. Harr. Fraedrich & Aghayeva), which serves as a pathogen in the host trees infested by RAB. The complex originated from Asia and was first discovered in the United States near Savannah, GA in 2002, and has rapidly made its way across the southeastern US, causing mortality for redbay and other important Lauraceae species, including sassafras, giving this disease complex the potential to have far-reaching ecological effects across North America. Our goal with this study was to examine the spatial distribution of RAB attacks in redbay and sassafras trees along the leading edge of disease progression. RAB attacks were clustered in both tree species, with attacks being most concentrated on the south side of the tree in sassafras, and with RAB clustering more with other RAB attacks on redbay. When comparing bolts that produced adult RABs, the average number of RABs emerged was higher in redbay compared to sassafras. Entrance hole density, RAB emergence, and moisture content were higher near the base of the stem compared to stems sections higher on the bole of both tree species. Our results suggest that physiological differences, such as size and structure of vessels, between these tree species may drive beetle attack patterns and, therefore, affect the progression and spread of disease throughout sassafras and other Lauraceae. Ips bark beetles (Ips species; Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) play an important role in forest ecosystems by attacking injured, stressed, or dying pine (Pinus) trees. Management of Ips bark beetles has largely focused on prevention by maintaining tree health through silvicultural treatments including thinning to reduce basal area or prescribed fire. However, there is conflicting evidence of whether prescribed fire leads to increased bark beetle populations and, subsequently, increased tree mortality. Recent outbreaks of Ips bark beetles in the southeastern U.S. have caused renewed interest in the interactions between pine management and bark beetle populations. We monitored Ips populations following prescribed fire in intensively managed pine stands and quantified Ips damage. We captured over 361,000 Ips bark beetles with I. avulsus being the most abundant of the three species collected. While we found high variation among Ips populations across study sites and years, there was a significant increase in bark beetle populations after prescribed fire followed by a significant decline the next year. While Ips populations increased up to three-fold after prescribed burns, damage ratings in burned stands were no different than unburned stands which had significantly lower bark beetle populations. Unburned stands had higher basal area and a higher average tree damage rating, but the lowest number of Ips bark beetles. A total of 14,071 facultative (e.g., Monochamus = 9775) and obligate (e.g., Thanasimus dubius = 4296) predators were collected during the study across all sites and the ratio of predators: Ips also significantly increased following prescribed fire. These data suggest that while Ips are ubiquitous and abundant in pine forests being managed with prescribed fire, natural mechanisms such as predator activity mediate their overall damage and impact to southeastern pine stands. • Ips bark beetles are ubiquitous in pine stands regardless of damage or mortality. • Prescribed fire results in significant increases in bark beetle trap collections. • Natural enemies also increase significantly in response to prescribed fire. • Two years after prescribed fire, Ips bark beetles decline, likely due to predators. Leaf litter arthropods are some of the most abundant and diverse communities in forests and provide myriad ecosystem services from decomposition and mineralization to pollination and predation. They are important to forest health and management and, in turn, are affected by how we manage our forests. Various forest management techniques such as clear cutting, burning, and chemical control of invasive species all have differing effects on ground dwelling arthropods and, despite their importance, a review of the literature on these effects does not currently exist.
