3. Sessile drop evaporation in a gap -- crossover between diffusion-limited and phase transition-limited regime

Abstract

We consider the time evolution of a sessile drop of volatile partially wetting liquid on a rigid solid substrate. Thereby, the drop evaporates under strong confinement, namely, it sits on one of the two parallel plates that form a narrow gap. First, we develop an efficient mesoscopic thin-film description in gradient dynamics form. It couples the diffusive dynamics of the vertically averaged vapour density in the narrow gap to an evolution equation for the profile of the volatile drop. The underlying free energy functional incorporates wetting, interface and bulk energies of the liquid and gas entropy. The model allows us to investigate the transition between diffusion-limited and phase transition-limited evaporation for shallow droplets. Its gradient dynamics character also allows for a full-curvature formulation. Second, we compare results obtained with the mesoscopic model to corresponding direct numerical simulations solving the Stokes equation for the drop coupled to the diffusion equation for the vapour as well as to selected experiments. In passing, we discuss the influence of contact line pinning.

Abstract

We report a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the structural and magnetic aspects of the layered honeycomb antiferromagent $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$. Magnetic susceptibility measurements performed under almost ideal hydrostatic-pressure conditions yield that the phase transition to zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ = 7.3 K can be rapidly suppressed to about 6.1 K. A further suppression with increasing pressure is impeded due to the occurrence of a pressure-induced structural transition at $p \geq$ 104 MPa, accompanied by a strong dimerization of Ru-Ru bonds, which gives rise to a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Whereas the dimerization transition is strongly first order, as reflected by large discontinuous changes in $\chi$ and pronounced hysteresis effects, the magnetic transition under varying pressure and magnetic field also reveals indications for a weakly first-order transition. We assign this observation to a strong magnetoelastic coupling in this system. Measurements of $\chi$ under varying pressure in the paramagnetic regime ($T > T_N$) and before dimerization ($p <$ 100 MPa) reveal a considerable increase of $\chi$ with pressure. These experimental observations are consistent with the results of ab-initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on the pressure-dependent structure and the corresponding pressure-dependent magnetic model. Comparative susceptibility measurements on a second crystal showing two consecutive magnetic transitions instead of one, indicating the influence of stacking faults. Using different temperature-pressure protocols the effect of these stacking faults can be temporarily overcome, transforming the magnetic state from a multiple-$T_N$ into a single-$T_N$ state.

Abstract

Crystalline solids are generally known as excellent heat conductors, amorphous materials or glasses as thermal insulators. It has thus come as a surprise that certain crystal structures defy this paradigm. A prominent example are type-I clathrates and other materials with guest-host structures. They sustain low-energy Einstein-like modes in their phonon spectra, but are also prone to various types of disorder and phonon-electron scattering and thus the mechanism responsible for their ultralow thermal conductivities has remained elusive. While recent ab initio lattice dynamics simulations show that the Einstein-like modes enhance phonon-phonon Umklapp scattering, they reproduce experimental data only at low temperatures. Here we show that a new effect, an "all phononic Kondo effect", can resolve this discrepancy. This is evidenced by our thermodynamic and transport measurements on various clathrate single crystal series and their comparison with ab initio simulations. Our new understanding devises design strategies to further suppress the thermal conductivity of clathrates and other related materials classes, with relevance for the field of thermoelectric waste heat recovery but also more generally for phononic applications. Abstract

Strong electron correlations can give rise to extraordinary properties of metals with renormalized quasiparticles which are at the basis of Landau's Fermi liquid theory. Near a quantum critical point, these quasiparticles can be destroyed and non-Fermi liquid behavior ensues. YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is a prototypical correlated metal as it exhibits quasiparticles formation, formation of Kondo lattice coherence and quasiparticle destruction at a field-induced quantum critical point. Here we show how, upon lowering the temperature, the Kondo lattice coherence develops and finally gives way to non-Fermi liquid electronic excitations. By measuring the single-particle excitations through scanning tunneling spectroscopy down to 0.3 K, we find the Kondo lattice peak emerging below the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K} \sim$ 25 K, yet this peak displays a non-trivial temperature dependence with a strong increase around 3.3 K. At the lowest temperature and as a function of an external magnetic field, the width of this peak is minimized in the quantum critical regime. Our results provide a striking demonstration of the non-Fermi liquid electronic excitations in quantum critical metals, thereby elucidating the strange-metal phenomena that have been ubiquitously observed in strongly correlated electron materials., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

A nanoscopic simulation for an acceleration sensor is aimed based on the piezoresistive effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Therefore, a compact model is built from density functional theory (DFT), compared with results of molecular dynamics (MD) that describes the mechanics of carbon nanotubes in a parameterized way. The results for the interesting kind of CNTs [(6,3) and (7,4)] within the two approaches agree in a satisfying way, when DFT-calculations are performed with atomic configurations obtained by MD geometry optimization. Geometry optimization yields the Poisson ratio for CNTs. Thus, values from MD and DFT are compared. The simulation finally aims the modeling of the conductive behavior of CNTs when strain is applied, but this needs further verification. Abstract

Gaseous and dust debris disks around white dwarfs (WDs) are formed from tidally disrupted planetary bodies. This offers an opportunity to determine the composition of exoplanetary material by measuring element abundances in the accreting WD's atmosphere. A more direct way to do this is through spectral analysis of the disks themselves. Currently, the number of chemical elements detected through disk emission-lines is smaller than that of species detected through lines in the WD atmospheres. We assess the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum of one well-studied object (SDSS J122859.93+104032.9) to search for disk signatures at wavelengths <1050 angstrom, where the broad absorption lines of the Lyman series effectively block the WD photospheric flux. We performed FUV observations (950-1240 angstrom) with the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and used archival optical spectra. We compared them with non-local thermodynamic equilibrium model spectra. In addition, we investigate the Ca II infrared triplet (IRT) line profiles to constrain disk geometry and composition. No disk emission-lines were detected in the FUV spectrum, indicating that the disk effective temperature is about 5000K. The long-time variability of the Ca II IRT was reproduced with a precessing disk model of bulk Earth-like composition, having a surface mass density of 0.3g/cm2 and an extension from 55 to 90 WD radii. Abstract

Auger Muons and Infill for the Ground Array) is an upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory to extend its range of detection and to directly measure the muon content of the particle showers. It consists of an infill of surface water-Cherenkov detectors accompanied by buried scintillator detectors used for muon counting. The main objectives of the AMIGA engineering array, referred to as the Unitary Cell, are to identify and resolve all engineering issues as well as to understand the muon-number counting uncertainties related to the design of the detector. The mechanical design, fabrication and deployment processes of the muon counters of the Unitary Cell are described in this document. These muon counters modules comprise sealed PVC casings containing plastic scintillation bars, wavelength-shifter optical fibers, 64 pixel photomultiplier tubes, and acquisition electronics. The modules are buried approximately 2.25 m below ground level in order to minimize contamination from electromagnetic shower particles. The mechanical setup, which allows access to the electronics for maintenance, is also described in addition to tests of the modules' response and integrity. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory has begun a major Upgrade of its already impressive capabilities, with an emphasis on improved mass composition determination using the surface detectors of the Observatory. Known as AugerPrime, the upgrade will include new 4 m$^2$ plastic scintillator detectors on top of all 1660 water-Cherenkov detectors, updated and more flexible surface detector electronics, a large array of buried muon detectors, and an extended duty cycle for operations of the fluorescence detectors. This Preliminary Design Report was produced by the Collaboration in April 2015 as an internal document and information for funding agencies. It outlines the scientific and technical case for AugerPrime. We now release it to the public via the arXiv server. Abstract

To exploit the full potential of radio measurements of cosmic-ray air showers at MHz frequencies, a detector timing synchronization within 1 ns is needed. Large distributed radio detector arrays such as the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) rely on timing via the Global Positioning System (GPS) for the synchronization of individual detector station clocks. Unfortunately, GPS timing is expected to have an accuracy no better than about 5 ns. In practice, in particular in AERA, the GPS clocks exhibit drifts on the order of tens of ns. We developed a technique to correct for the GPS drifts, and an independent method is used for cross-checks that indeed we reach nanosecond-scale timing accuracy by this correction. First, we operate a "beacon transmitter" which emits defined sine waves detected by AERA antennas recorded within the physics data. The relative phasing of these sine waves can be used to correct for GPS clock drifts. In addition to this, we observe radio pulses emitted by commercial airplanes, the position of which we determine in real time from Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcasts intercepted with a software-defined radio. From the known source location and the measured arrival times of the pulses we determine relative timing offsets between radio detector stations. We demonstrate with a combined analysis that the two methods give a consistent timing calibration with an accuracy of 2 ns or better. Consequently, the beacon method alone can be used in the future to continuously determine and correct for GPS clock drifts in each individual event measured by AERA., Comment: 26 pages. Abstract

We have conducted three searches for correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays detected by the Telescope Array and the Pierre Auger Observatory, and high-energy neutrino candidate events from IceCube. Two cross-correlation analyses with UHECRs are done: one with 39 cascades from the IceCube `high-energy starting events' sample and the other with 16 high-energy `track events'. The angular separation between the arrival directions of neutrinos and UHECRs is scanned over. The same events are also used in a separate search using a maximum likelihood approach, after the neutrino arrival directions are stacked. To estimate the significance we assume UHECR magnetic deflections to be inversely proportional to their energy, with values $3^\circ$, $6^\circ$ and $9^\circ$ at 100 EeV to allow for the uncertainties on the magnetic field strength and UHECR charge. A similar analysis is performed on stacked UHECR arrival directions and the IceCube sample of through-going muon track events which were optimized for neutrino point-source searches., Comment: one proceeding, the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference, 30 July - 6 August 2015, The Hague, The Netherlands; will appear in PoS(ICRC2015)

Abstract

We analyze the statistics of photons originating from amplified spontaneous emission generated by a quantum dot superluminescent diode. Experimentally detectable emission properties are taken into account by parametrizing the corresponding quantum state as a multi-mode phase-randomized Gaussian density operator. The validity of this model is proven in two subsequent experiments using fast two-photon-absorption detection observing second order equal-time- as well as second order fully time-resolved intensity correlations on femtosecond timescales. In the first experiment, we study the photon statistics when the number of contributing longitudinal modes is systematically reduced by applying well-controlled optical feedback. In a second experiment, we add coherent light from a single-mode laserdiode to quantum dot superluminescent diode broadband radiation. Tuning the power ratio, we realize tailored second order correlations ranging from Gaussian to Poissonian statistics. Both experiments are very well matched by theory, thus giving first insights into quantum properties of radiation from quantum dot superluminescent diodes., Comment: submitted to New Journal of Physics

Abstract

For a fraction of single white dwarfs with debris disks, an additional gaseous disk was discovered. Both dust and gas are thought to be created by the disruption of planetary bodies. The composition of the extrasolar planetary material can directly be analyzed in the gaseous disk component, and the disk dynamics might be accessible by investigating the temporal behavior of the Ca II infrared emission triplet, hallmark of the gas disk. We obtained new optical spectra for the first helium-dominated white dwarf for which a gas disk was discovered (Ton 345) and modeled the non-LTE spectra of viscous gas disks composed of carbon, oxygen, magnesium, silicon, sulfur, and calcium with chemical abundances typical for solar system asteroids. Iron and its possible line-blanketing effects on the model structure and spectral energy distribution was still neglected. A set of models with different radii, effective temperatures, and surface densities as well as chondritic and bulk-Earth abundances was computed and compared with the observed line profiles of the Ca II infrared triplet. Our models suggest that the Ca II emission stems from a rather narrow gas ring with a radial extent of R=0.44-0.94 Rsol, a uniform surface density Sigma=0.3 g/cm2, and an effective temperature of Teff=6000 K. The often assumed chemical mixtures derived from photospheric abundances in polluted white dwarfs - similar to a chondritic or bulk-Earth composition - produce unobserved emission lines in the model and therefore have to be altered. We do not detect any line-profile variability on timescales of hours, but we confirm the long-term trend over the past decade for the red-blue asymmetry of the double-peaked lines., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

The ca. 2.96 Ga Dominion Group (DG) preserves the first subaerial volcano-sedimentary succession on the Kaapvaal Craton. Based on field and core observations, this study provides revised stratigraphic logs and geological maps from the area around Ottosdal that refine the understanding of the stratigraphic and tectonic evolution of these ancient rocks. Fluvial sandstone and conglomerate of the Rhenosterspruit Formation (RsF) were deposited on granite basement, followed by andesitic to basaltic volcanic rocks of the Rhenosterhoek Formation (RhF). These amygdaloidal andesitic to basaltic lava units show fragmentation around lava flows that may represent an indication of prevalent subaerial environment. However, local hyaloclastite and pillow lava units indicate periodic aqueous conditions. The Syferfontein Formation (SF) has the most extensive exposures in the Ottosdal area and represents the youngest volcanic unit of the DG. The porphyritic and spherulitic volcanic rocks tell a story of subaerial volcanism interspersed with periods of lacustrine deposition of sandstone and shale. The Witwatersrand Supergroup (WSG) overlies the DG along an angular unconformity. Folding affected the succession of the DG, WSG and the Ventersdorp Supergroup (Rietgat Formation). This event is reflected in small-scale folds and mullion structures in the central part of the study area and by larger scale north-north-west-south-southeast-striking anticlines and synclines. Folding was accompanied by northwest-southeast-striking thrust faulting, either during or shortly after the formation of the Ventersdorp Supergroup. In the study area, post-Ventersdorp deformation is restricted to east-northeast-west-southwest-striking faults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Spherical harmonic moments are well-suited for capturing anisotropy at any scale in the flux of cosmic rays. An unambiguous measurement of the full set of spherical harmonic coefficients requires full-sky coverage. This can be achieved by combining data from observatories located in both the northern and southern hemispheres. To this end, a joint analysis using data recorded at the Telescope Array and the Pierre Auger Observatory above $10^{19}$ eV is presented in this work. The resulting multipolar expansion of the flux of cosmic rays allows us to perform a series of anisotropy searches, and in particular to report on the angular power spectrum of cosmic rays above $10^{19}$ eV. Abstract

Measurements of air showers made using the hybrid technique developed with the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory allow a sensitive search for point sources of EeV photons anywhere in the exposed sky. A multivariate analysis reduces the background of hadronic cosmic rays. The search is sensitive to a declination band from -85{\deg} to +20{\deg}, in an energy range from 10^17.3 eV to 10^18.5 eV. No photon point source has been detected. An upper limit on the photon flux has been derived for every direction. The mean value of the energy flux limit that results from this, assuming a photon spectral index of -2, is 0.06 eV cm^-2 s^-1, and no celestial direction exceeds 0.25 eV cm^-2 s^-1. Abstract

A quantum critical point (QCP) arises at a continuous transition between competing phases at zero temperature. Collective excitations at magnetic QCPs give rise to metallic properties that strongly deviate from the expectations of Landau's Fermi liquid description, the standard theory of electron correlations in metals. Central to this theory is the notion of quasiparticles, electronic excitations which possess the quantum numbers of the bare electrons. Here we report measurements of thermal and electrical transport across the field-induced magnetic QCP in the heavy-fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. We show that the ratio of the thermal to electrical conductivities at the zero-temperature limit obeys the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law above the critical field, $B_c$. This is also expected at $B < B_c$, where weak antiferromagnetic order and a Fermi liquid phase form below 0.07 K ($B = 0$). However, at the critical field the low-temperature electrical conductivity suggests a non-Fermi-liquid ground state and exceeds the thermal conductivity by about 10%. This apparent violation of the WF law provides evidence for an unconventional type of QCP at which the fundamental concept of Landau quasiparticles breaks down. These results imply that Landau quasiparticles break up, and that the origin of this disintegration is inelastic scattering associated with electronic quantum critical fluctuations. Abstract

Debris disks around single white dwarfs are thought to be the remains of planetary bodies disrupted by tidal forces. Ongoing accretion of the hereby produced dust allows to detect the planetary material in the white dwarf photosphere and to conclude on its chemical composition. As an alternative, the composition can in principle be determined directly from the emission lines of the sometimes additionally observed gaseous component of the disks. To this aim, we perform spectral modeling with our non-LTE code for accretion disks. We have obtained new observations of Ton 345 in order to look for long- and short-term variations in the disk line-profiles. We find that the prominent red-violet asymmetry of the Ca II infrared triplet almost disappeared. Abstract

Gaseous metal discs around single white dwarfs have been discovered recently. They are thought to develop from disrupted planetary bodies. Spectroscopic analyses will allow us to study the composition of extrasolar planetary material. We investigate in detail the first object for which a gas disc was discovered (SDSS J122859.93+104032.9). Therefor we perform non-LTE modelling of viscous gas discs by computing the detailed vertical structure and line spectra. The models are composed of carbon, oxygen, magnesium, silicon, calcium, and hydrogen with chemical abundances typical for Solar System asteroids. Line asymmetries are modelled by assuming spiral-arm and eccentric disc structures as suggested by hydrodynamical simulations. The observed infrared Ca II emission triplet can be modelled with a hydrogen-deficient metal gas disc located inside of the tidal disruption radius, with an effective temperature of about 6000 K and a surface mass density of 0.3 g/cm^2. The inner radius is well constrained at about 0.64 Solar radii. The line profile asymmetry can be reproduced by either a spiral-arm structure or an eccentric disc, the latter being favoured by its time variability behaviour. Such structures, reaching from 0.64 to 1.5 Solar radii, contain a mass of about 3 to 6*10^21 g, the latter equivalent to the mass of a 135-km diameter Solar System asteroid., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

We present results of high-resolution, low-temperature measurements of the Hall coefficient, thermopower, and specific heat on stoichiometric YbRh2Si2. They support earlier conclusions of an electronic (Kondo-breakdown) quantum critical point concurring with a field induced antiferromagnetic one. We also discuss the detachment of the two instabilities under chemical pressure. Volume compression/expansion (via substituting Rh by Co/Ir) results in a stabilization/weakening of magnetic order. Moderate Ir substitution leads to a non-Fermi-liquid phase, in which the magnetic moments are neither ordered nor screened by the Kondo effect. The so-derived zero-temperature global phase diagram promises future studies to explore the nature of the Kondo breakdown quantum critical point without any interfering magnetism., Comment: minor changes, accepted for publication in JPSJ

Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a hybrid detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It combines a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level together with a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The fluorescence detector comprises 24 large telescopes specialized for measuring the nitrogen fluorescence caused by charged particles of cosmic ray air showers. In this paper we describe the components of the fluorescence detector including its optical system, the design of the camera, the electronics, and the systems for relative and absolute calibration. We also discuss the operation and the monitoring of the detector. Finally, we evaluate the detector performance and precision of shower reconstructions., Comment: 53 pages. Abstract

We report on precise low-temperature specific-heat measurements, C(T), of YbRh2Si2 in the vicinity of the antiferromagnetic phase transition on a single crystal of superior quality (RRR 150). We observe a very sharp peak at T_N=72mK with absolute values as high as C/T=8J/molK^2. A detailed analysis of the critical exponent \alpha around T_N reveals \alpha=0.38 which differs significantly from those of the conventional universality classes in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, where \alpha<0.11. Thermal-expansion measurements corroborate this large positive critical exponent. These results provide insight into the nature of the critical magnetic fluctuations at a temperature-driven phase transition close to a quantum critical point., Comment: Accepted for PRL

Abstract

The heavy-fermion compound YbRh2Si2 exhibits an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition at an extremely low temperature of TN = 70 mK. Upon applying a tiny magnetic field of Bc = 60 mT the AFM ordering is suppressed and the system is driven toward a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP). Here, we present low-temperature thermopower S(T) measurements of high-quality YbRh2Si2 single crystals down to 30 mK. S(T) is found negative with comparably large values in the paramagnetic state. In zero field no Landau-Fermi-liquid (LFL) like behavior is observed within the magnetically ordered phase. However, a sign change from negative to positive appears at lowest temperatures on the magnetic side of the QCP. For higher fields B > Bc a linear extrapolation of S to zero clearly evidences the recovery of LFL regime. However, data addressing skin physiology after MFU-V treatment are lacking. This observational evaluation was aimed to assess skin physiology before and after MFU-V treatment using noninvasive biophysical measurements. Patients and methods: Twenty-two female patients with moderate-to-severe skin sagging at the jawline and submental region on the Merz Aesthetics Scale obtained a single MFU-V treatment according to protocol. Skin function measurements focused on short-term effects up to 3 days and long-term effects up to 24 weeks after treatment. Skin temperature, transepidermal water loss, skin hydration, erythema, elasticity, and skin thickness and density were evaluated under standardized conditions. Pain was assessed using a validated numeric visual analog scale.Results: Skin temperature remained in a physiologic range and no significant increase was noted at day 3 after MFU-V treatment. Transepidermal water loss, hydration, and erythema values were fairly stable and showed no significant differences at short- and long-term measurements vs baseline. At week 4 after a single MFU-V treatment, gross and net elasticity values were significantly decreased (P=0.003 and P=0.0001, respectively), followed by significantly increased values at week 12 (P=0.015, P=0.046) and week 24 (P=0.001, P=0.049). Edema due to MFU-V treatment resolved without sequelae. For all patients, pain diminished shortly after treatment. No adverse events occurred during the 24-week follow-up period. Conclusions: MFU-V treatment is well tolerated and it does not alter the epidermal barrier function or physiology of skin. Significant increase in the elasticity of skin was observed at 12 and 24 weeks after a single treatment, which reflects improvement in dermal tissue function. These short- and long-term effects are congruous with the mode of action of MFU-V due to a proven intrinsic tissue remodeling process.
