This paper presents a case study of two types of multimedia resources that were integrated as supplementary learning materials into the design and delivery of two different graduate courses on the historical foundations of library and information science (LIS): video and audio lectures from an online course on the history of information (integrated into a doctoral seminar), and a curated playlist of a weekly public radio broadcast on the history of ideas (integrated into a master's course). It also considers some of the limitations of compiling LIS-related audiovisual materials from disparate online sources, with references to examples. By analyzing and critiquing these three applications of multimedia resources in LIS graduate courses, this paper attempts to answer the following research question: Beyond traditional pedagogical strategies such as lectures and text-based readings and assignments, how might students, practitioners, and the general public gain a sweeping understanding of our field? The paper aims to help LIS educators to diversify their pedagogical strategies and reach people outside their classrooms. By incorporating these kinds of multimedia resources into course designs, educators may help to empower students to actively and creatively apply what they learn in class to the analysis of historical events, biographies, and social movements, develop technical skills that will benefit their professional development, and produce deliverables that can be shared on public platforms to reach a wider audience beyond LIS classrooms.

Students in the Library and Information Science concentration at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto, are being taught the Information Horizon Interview (IHI). By learning this technique, students are able to conduct original information behavior research upon a topic or population of their choice. This article provides a succinct overview of the IHI. It then reports on an IHI assignment and learning experience with enough detail and resources to enable turnkey adoption by other LIS educators.

This paper encourages educators in library and information science (LIS) to adopt the "creative deliverable," that is, an assignment that gives students the freedom to display their understanding of course material in an almost unrestricted range of alternative formats and genres, while retaining some key features of traditional scholarship. Using the traditional essay as a point of comparison, we define the creative deliverable; profile its application in a library and information science course; display three examples; detail important practical considerations for its use; and share the student perspective.

Background: In the past decade, scholars of information science have started to conduct research on information behaviour in serious leisure. Presently, these studies lack common concepts and terms and empirical discoveries are not easy to assemble into theory. Aim: This conceptual and methodological paper surveys the aforementioned research area and introduces Anders Hektor's model of information behaviour in conjunction with the serious leisure perspective as a means to systematically study information behaviour in serious leisure. Method: Three methods are employed. The first is a selective literature review and intellectual history of research into information behaviour in serious leisure. The second is a conceptual analysis of Hektor's model that relates its key features to the serious leisure perspective. The third consists of a deductive audit of three forms of serious leisure (the liberal arts hobby, amateur musicianship, and the hobby of running), utilising the frameworks, concepts, and terms outlined in the paper. Results: Studies of information behaviour in serious leisure have increased and deepened in the past decade, largely through idiographic case studies. Hektor's model of information behaviour, with its locus in everyday life and precise delineation of eight information activities, can complement such research designs. A deductive audit guided by Hektor's model illuminated information activities within the three forms of serious leisure and enabled comparative observations. Conclusions: When combined with the serious leisure perspective, Hektor's model enables research that is comparative and more precise. However, the extent to which this model captures physical or embodied information should be further examined. Introduction: Theorist Howard D. White has made a call to action for "scientist-poets" to synthesize concepts and oeuvres in the centrifugal literature of information science. In response, this paper interprets the work of canonical information scientist Marcia J. Bates through the original metaphor of "castles and inverted castles". Methods: An intellectual biography and close reading is performed on a sample of eight major papers by Bates. Analysis. Bates's career is sketched and the eight landmark papers are summarized; then, the papers are analysed in terms of the architectural metaphor and located at different conceptual levels in the discipline. Results: Castles (elaborately built seats of power that bridge borderlands) express many of the unique qualities of Bates's work. Inverted castles (an invention of the author) reflect an additional utilitarian and pedagogical aspect of her thinking. Conclusion: A conclusion offers critical remarks on Bates's contribution. The outcome is a vivid interpretation of the work of one notable information scientist. This paper demonstrates a dynamic, collaborative, and dialogic strategy for guiding students (and experienced researcher teams) through rudimentary forms of visual analysis using draw-and-write datasets. The approach identifies five sequential stages of the visual analysis process and further delineates twenty activities therein. Akin to the instructional "calls" spoken during square dancing, a leader with a script verbally prompts participants through a series of observational and analytical exercises and poses discussion questions along the way. The interactive experience unfolds stepwise and engenders in participants a feeling of intimacy with the images; introduces an array of analytical lenses; gives rise to discoveries about the concept being studied visually; kindles "esprit de corps"; and is fun. To encourage the adoption of this approach--called (i)Square Dancing--a blueprint for a student-geared, draw-and-write study and the leader's script are provided for educators and scholars alike to borrow and customize to their own courses, research questions, and disciplines.

Information lies at the center of information studies, the information professions, and information education. Yet there are few agreed upon pedagogical strategies for engaging students in our central concept. In many educational programs the nature of information is assumed to be obvious and therefore left uninterrogated. Alternatively, students may be asked to read articles, such as "Information as Thing" (Buckland, 1991), in conjunction with a lecture, class discussion, or writing assignment. To expand the available options, this brief communication offers educators in information studies a new, arts-based, participatory approach for teaching about information itself.
