1. The unrealized potential of agroforestry for an emissions-intensive agricultural commodity

Abstract: Reconciling agricultural production with climate-change mitigation and adaptation is one of the most formidable problems in sustainability. One proposed strategy for addressing this problem is the judicious retention of trees in agricultural systems. However, the magnitude of the current and future-potential benefit that trees contribute remains uncertain, particularly in the agricultural sector where trees can also limit production. Here we help to resolve these issues across a West African region responsible for producing $\approx$60% of the world's cocoa, a crop that contributes one of the highest per unit carbon footprints of all foods. We use machine learning to generate spatially-explicit estimates of shade-tree cover and carbon stocks across the region. We find that existing shade-tree cover is low, and not spatially aligned with climate threat. But we also find enormous unrealized potential for the sector to counterbalance a large proportion of their high carbon footprint annually, without threatening production. Our methods can be applied to other globally significant commodities that can be grown in agroforests, and align with accounting requirements of carbon markets, and emerging legislative requirements for sustainability reporting.

2. Coslice Colimits in Homotopy Type Theory

Abstract: We contribute to the theory of (homotopy) colimits inside homotopy type theory. The heart of our work characterizes the connection between colimits in coslices of a universe, called coslice colimits, and colimits in the universe (i.e., ordinary colimits). To derive this characterization, we find an explicit construction of colimits in coslices that is tailored to reveal the connection. We use the construction to derive properties of colimits. Notably, we prove that the forgetful functor from a coslice creates colimits over trees. We also use the construction to examine how colimits interact with orthogonal factorization systems and with cohomology theories. As a consequence of their interaction with orthogonal factorization systems, all pointed colimits (special kinds of coslice colimits) preserve $n$-connectedness, which implies that higher groups are closed under colimits on directed graphs. 3. High-Fidelity Optical Monitoring of Laser Powder Bed Fusion via Aperture Division Multiplexing

Abstract: Qualification of high-performance metal components produced by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) must identify process-induced porous defects that reduce ductility and nucleate fatigue cracking. Detecting such defects via optical monitoring of LPBF provides a path towards in-process quality control without downstream testing such as by computed tomography. However, integration of in-process sensing with LPBF is hampered by geometric and optical complications and, as a result, it has yet to be proven that the finest pores that limit component fatigue life can be resolved via in situ data. We present aperture division multiplexing (ADM) as a method for simultaneously focusing the process laser and providing unobstructed optical access for high-fidelity process monitoring using a common optic. Construction of an ADM optic of achieving imaging at 50 micron spatial resolution in the mid-wave infrared is described, and this optic is demonstrated on a production-representative LPBF testbed. High-speed infrared video data are correlated to micro-CT measurement of pores as fine as 4.3 microns, through multiple process signatures, establishing the promise of ADM for qualification of LPBF component fatigue performance.

4. Photonic frequency multiplexed next-generation reservoir computer

Abstract: In this work, we introduce and experimentally demonstrate a photonic frequency-multiplexed next generation reservoir computer (FM-NGRC) capable of performing real-time inference at GHz speed. NGRCs apply a feed-forward architecture to produce a feature vector directly from the input data over a fixed number of time steps. This feature vector, analogous to the reservoir state in a conventional RC, is used to perform inference by applying a decision layer trained by linear regression. Photonic NGRC provides a flexible platform for real-time inference by forgoing the need for explicit feedback loops inherent to a physical reservoir. The FM-NGRC introduced here defines the memory structure using an optical frequency comb and dispersive fiber while the sinusoidal response of electro-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometers controls the nonlinear transform applied to elements of the feature vector. A programmable waveshaper modulates each comb tooth independently to apply the trained decision layer weights in the analog domain. We apply the FM-NGRC to solve the benchmark nonlinear channel equalization task; after theoretically determining feature vectors that enable high-accuracy distortion compensation, we construct an FM-NGRC that generates these vectors to experimentally demonstrate real-time channel equalization at 5 GS/s with a symbol error rate of $\sim 2\times 10^{-3}$., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

5. Transformers for Charged Particle Track Reconstruction in High Energy Physics

Abstract: Reconstructing charged particle tracks is a fundamental task in modern collider experiments. The unprecedented particle multiplicities expected at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) pose significant challenges for track reconstruction, where traditional algorithms become computationally infeasible. To address this challenge, we present a novel learned approach to track reconstruction that adapts recent advances in computer vision and object detection. Our architecture combines a Transformer hit filtering network with a MaskFormer reconstruction model that jointly optimises hit assignments and the estimation of the charged particles' properties. Evaluated on the TrackML dataset, our best performing model achieves state-of-the-art tracking performance with 97% efficiency for a fake rate of 0.6%, and inference times of 100ms. Our tunable approach enables specialisation for specific applications like triggering systems, while its underlying principles can be extended to other reconstruction challenges in high energy physics. This work demonstrates the potential of modern deep learning architectures to address emerging computational challenges in particle physics while maintaining the precision required for groundbreaking physics analysis.

6. $SU(N)$ spin-phonon simulations of Floquet dynamics in spin $S > 1/2$ Mott insulators

Abstract: The dynamics of magnetic moments coupled to phonons is of great interest for understanding spin transport in solids as well as for our ability to control magnetism via tailored phonon modes. For spin $S > 1/2$, spin-orbit coupling permits an unusual linear coupling of phonons to quadrupolar moments, so that phonons act as a dynamical transverse field for the spins. Here, we develop a generalized $SU(N)$ spin-phonon Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics technique to simulate the equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of such spin-orbital-phonon coupled Mott insulators, and apply it to a spin-1 model with competing XY antiferromagnet (AFM) and quadrupolar paramagnet (QPM) phases which is relevant to the Mott insulator $\rm{Ba_2FeSi_2O_7}$. We uncover a rich variety of dynamical phenomena in this system induced by linear or chiral phonon drives, including the generation of a uniform magnetization in the QPM and AFM, strengthening of N\'eel order and gapping of the AFM Nambu-Goldstone mode by Floquet-Ising anisotropy, a non-equilibrium QPM to AFM transition, and creation of Floquet copies of transverse and longitudinal spin waves. Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. 9. Origin of 3He abundance enhancements in gradual solar energetic particle events

Abstract: We examined the origin of 3He abundance enhancement in 23 high-energy (25-50 MeV) solar proton events that coincide with 3He-rich periods detected by ACE ULEIS in 1997-2021. In seven events, 3He enhancement was due to 3He leftover from preceding events or independent 3He events occurring during proton events. One event is the most likely impulsive (3He-rich), and another is unclear. Reaccelerated remnant flare material was the most probable cause of 3He enhancements in the remaining 14 proton events. Imaging observations showed coronal jets in the parent active regions in six of these 14 events. 10. Saddles-to-minima topological crossover and glassiness in the Rubik's Cube

Abstract: Slow relaxation and glassiness have been the focus of extensive research attention, along with popular and technological interest, for many decades. While much understanding has been attained through mean-field and mode-coupling models, energy landscape paradigms, and real-space descriptions of dynamical heterogeneities and facilitation, a complete framework about the origins and existence of a glass transition is yet to be achieved. In this work we propose a discrete model glass-former, inspired by the famous Rubik's Cube, where these questions can be answered with surprising depth. By introducing a swap-move Monte Carlo algorithm, we are able to access thermal equilibrium states above and below the temperature of dynamical arrest. Exploiting the discreteness of the model, we probe directly the energy-resolved connectivity structure of the model, and we uncover a saddles-to-minima topological crossover underpinning the slowing down and eventual arrest of the dynamics. We demonstrate that the smooth behaviour in finite-size systems tends asymptotically to a sharp step-change in the thermodynamic limit, identifying a well-defined energy threshold where the onset of stretched exponential behaviour and the dynamical arrest come to coincide. Our results allow us to shed light on the origin of the glassy behaviour, and how this is resolved by changing connectivity upon introducing swap-moves., Comment: (8 pages, 8 figures)

11. Radiation damage and recovery of plastic scintillators under ultra-high dose rate 200 MeV electrons at CERN CLEAR facility

Abstract: The FLASH effect holds significant potential in improving radiotherapy treatment outcomes. Very high energy electrons (VHEEs) can effectively target tumors deep in the body and can be accelerated to achieve ultra-high dose rates (UHDR), making them a promising modality for delivering FLASH radiotherapy in the clinic. However, apart from suitable VHEE sources, clinical translation requires accurate dosimetry, which is challenging due to the limitation of standard dosimeters under UHDR. Water-equivalent and real-time plastic scintillation dosimeters (PSDs) may offer a solution. In this study, a 4-channel PSD, consisting of polystyrene-based BCF12 and Medscint proprietary scintillators, polyvinyltoluene (PVT)-based EJ-212 and a clear plastic fiber channel for Cherenkov subtraction was exposed to the 200 MeV VHEE UHDR beam at the CLEAR CERN facility. The Hyperscint RP200 platform was used to assess linearity to dose pulses of up to 90 Gy and dose rates up to 4.6x10$^9$ Gy/s, and to investigate radiation damage and recovery after dose accumulation of 37.2 kGy. While clear fiber response was linear across the entire dose range studied, light output saturated above ~50 Gy/pulse for scintillators. Despite radiation damage, linearity was preserved, though it resulted in a decrease of scintillator and clear fiber light output of <1.85 %/kGy and a shift in spectra towards longer wavelengths. Short-term recovery (<100h) of these changes was observed and depended on rest duration and accumulated dose. After long-term rest (<172 days), light output recovery was partial, with 6-22% of residual permanent damage remaining, while spectral recovery was complete. We showed that PSDs are sensitive to radiation damage, but maintain dose linearity even after accumulated dose of 37.2 kGy, and exhibit significant response recovery. Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 13. Towards absolutely stable ergodicity breaking in two and three dimensions

Abstract: We propose new physically reasonable systems capable of avoiding ergodicity at infinite time in the thermodynamic limit, even with generic perturbations and when coupled to a heat bath. In two dimensions, the rainbow loop soup has (stretched) exponentially numerous absolutely stable nonergodic states with diverging energy but vanishing energy density. In three dimensions the rainbow membrane soup has (stretched) exponentially numerous nonergodic states with diverging energy barriers, leading to infinite-time robust ergodicity breaking that even survives coupling to a nonzero temperature heat bath. We describe our results in the language of exact emergent symmetries and demonstrate how the systems avoid common instabilities. 14. Fourier-based Action Recognition for Wildlife Behavior Quantification with Event Cameras

Abstract: Event cameras are novel bio-inspired vision sensors that measure pixel-wise brightness changes asynchronously instead of images at a given frame rate. They offer promising advantages, namely a high dynamic range, low latency, and minimal motion blur. Modern computer vision algorithms often rely on artificial neural network approaches, which require image-like representations of the data and cannot fully exploit the characteristics of event data. We propose approaches to action recognition based on the Fourier Transform. The approaches are intended to recognize oscillating motion patterns commonly present in nature. In particular, we apply our approaches to a recent dataset of breeding penguins annotated for "ecstatic display", a behavior where the observed penguins flap their wings at a certain frequency. We find that our approaches are both simple and effective, producing slightly lower results than a deep neural network (DNN) while relying just on a tiny fraction of the parameters compared to the DNN (five orders of magnitude fewer parameters). They work well despite the uncontrolled, diverse data present in the dataset. 15. Exact analytic toolbox for quantum dynamics with tunable noise strength

Abstract: We introduce a framework that allows for the exact analytic treatment of quantum dynamics subject to coherent noise. The noise is modeled via unitary evolution under a Hamiltonian drawn from a random-matrix ensemble for arbitrary Hilbert-space dimension $N$. While the methods we develop apply to generic such ensembles with a notion of rotation invariance, we focus largely on the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE). Averaging over the ensemble of ''noisy'' Hamiltonians produces an effective quantum channel, the properties of which are analytically calculable and determined by the spectral form factors of the relevant ensemble. We compute spectral form factors of the GUE exactly for any finite $N$, along with the corresponding GUE quantum channel, and its variance. Key advantages of our approach include the ability to access exact analytic results for any $N$ and the ability to tune to the noise-free limit (in contrast, e.g., to the Haar ensemble), and analytic access to moments beyond the variance. Despite their ecological significance, comprehensive genomic resources for diatoms are limited. To address this, we have annotated previously unannotated genome assemblies of 49 diatom species. Genome assemblies were obtained from NCBI Datasets and processed for repeat elements using RepeatModeler2 and RepeatMasker. For gene prediction, BRAKER2 was employed in the absence of transcriptomic data, while BRAKER3 was utilized when transcriptome short read data were available from the Sequence Read Archive. The quality of genome assemblies and predicted protein sets was evaluated using BUSCO, ensuring high-quality genomic resources. Functional annotation was performed using EnTAP, providing insights into the biological roles of the predicted proteins. Abstract: The application of average Hamiltonian theory (AHT) to magnetic resonance and quantum sensing informs pulse sequence design, for example, by providing efficient approximations of spin dynamics while retaining important physical characteristics of system evolution. Here we establish that certain symmetries, such as rapid echos, allow AHT to remain accurate well beyond the perturbative limit. 18. Elucidating the Design Choice of Probability Paths in Flow Matching for Forecasting

However, the impact of the specific choice of probability path model on forecasting performance remains under-explored. In this work, we demonstrate that forecasting spatio-temporal data with flow matching is highly sensitive to the selection of the probability path model. Motivated by this insight, we propose a novel probability path model designed to improve forecasting performance. Our empirical results across various dynamical system benchmarks show that our model achieves faster convergence during training and improved predictive performance compared to existing probability path models. Importantly, our approach is efficient during inference, requiring only a few sampling steps. Abstract: During infectious disease outbreaks, estimates of time-varying pathogen transmissibility, such as the instantaneous reproduction number R(t) or epidemic growth rate r(t), are used to inform decision-making by public health authorities. For directly transmitted infectious diseases, the renewal equation framework is a widely used method for measuring time-varying transmissibility. The framework uses information on the typical time elapsing between an infection and the offspring infections (quantified by the generation time distribution), and R(t), to describe the rate at which currently infected individuals generate new infections. For diseases with transmission cycles involving hosts and vectors, however, renewal equation models have been far less used. This is likely due to difficulties in mechanistically defining generation times that can capture the complexity of multi-stage, human-vector relationships. Here, using dengue as an example, we provide general renewal equations that are derived from first principles using age-structured systems of coupled partial differential equations across human and vector sub-populations. Our framework tracks the multi-stage transmission cycle over calendar time and across stage-specific ages, resulting in governing renewal equations that quantify how the rate at which new infections are generated from existing infections depends on stage-specific processes. 20. Automated Segmentation and Analysis of Microscopy Images of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Melt Tracks

Abstract: With the increasing adoption of metal additive manufacturing (AM), researchers and practitioners are turning to data-driven approaches to optimise printing conditions. Cross-sectional images of melt tracks provide valuable information for tuning process parameters, developing parameter scaling data, and identifying defects. Here we present an image segmentation neural network that automatically identifies and measures melt track dimensions from a cross-section image. We use a U-Net architecture to train on a data set of 62 pre-labelled images obtained from different labs, machines, and materials coupled with image augmentation. When neural network hyperparameters such as batch size and learning rate are properly tuned, the learned model shows an accuracy for classification of over 99% and an F1 score over 90%. The neural network exhibits robustness when tested on images captured by various users, printed on different machines, and acquired using different microscopes. A post-processing module extracts the height and width of the melt pool, and the wetting angles. Abstract: This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Abstract: Towards the end of an infectious disease outbreak, when a period has elapsed without new case notifications, a key question for public health policy makers is whether the outbreak can be declared over. This requires the benefits of a declaration (e.g., relaxation of outbreak control measures) to be balanced against the risk of a resurgence in cases. To support this decision making, mathematical methods have been developed to quantify the end-of-outbreak probability. Here, we propose a new approach to this problem that accounts for a range of features of real-world outbreaks, specifically: (i) incomplete case ascertainment; (ii) reporting delays; (iii) individual heterogeneity in transmissibility; and (iv) whether cases were imported or infected locally. We showcase our approach using two case studies: Covid-19 in New Zealand in 2020, and Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2018. In these examples, we found that the date when the estimated probability of no future infections reached 95% was relatively consistent across a range of modelling assumptions. This suggests that our modelling framework can generate robust quantitative estimates that can be used by policy advisors, alongside other sources of evidence, to inform end-of-outbreak declarations.

23. A rapid experimental workflow for studying melt track scaling in laser powder bed fusion using high-precision metal template substrates

Abstract: Development and qualification of process parameters in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) commonly involves many variables. At the outset of development, whether transferring known parameters to a new machine, or exploring a new material, single-track and single-layer experiments are a convenient means of down-selecting key variables and exploring parameter scaling behavior. We present an experimental workflow for single-layer LPBF experiments using etched high-precision metal template substrates, overcoming challenges with precision single-layer alignment in LPBF systems and enabling efficient processing and cross-sectional analysis. Templates are fabricated using chemical etching and machining, and are characterized using optical profilometry and X-ray transmission imaging of powder layers. Using the templates a single-track parameter study is performed in SS316 including three powder layer thicknesses, and spanning common laser melting modes (lack-of-fusion, conduction, and keyhole mode). Analysis of melt track geometries using automated image processing allows a scaling law to be applied to define the process window, quantifying the amount of material added with increasing powder layer thickness. Single-track results are verified with raster scanning experiments, showing the potential to transfer single-track results to full LPBF builds.

Abstract: Stratospheric aerosols play an important role in the earth system and can affect the climate on timescales of months to years. However, estimating the characteristics of partially observed aerosol injections, such as those from volcanic eruptions, is fraught with uncertainties. This article presents a framework for stratospheric aerosol source inversion which accounts for background aerosol noise and earth system internal variability via a Bayesian approximation error approach. We leverage specially designed earth system model simulations using the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). A comprehensive framework for data generation, data processing, dimension reduction, operator learning, and Bayesian inversion is presented where each component of the framework is designed to address particular challenges in stratospheric modeling on the global scale. We present numerical results using synthesized observational data to rigorously assess the ability of our approach to estimate aerosol sources and associate uncertainty with those estimates.

Abstract: Despite considerable progress in developing artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for prostate cancer detection from whole slide images, the clinical applicability of these models remains limited due to variability in pathological annotations and existing dataset limitations. This article proposes a novel approach to overcome these challenges by leveraging a Bayesian framework to seamlessly integrate new data, and present results as a panel of annotations. The framework is demonstrated by integrating a Bayesian prior with one trained AI model to generate a distribution of Gleason patterns for each pixel of an image. It is shown that using this distribution of Gleason patterns rather than a ground-truth label can improve model applicability, mitigate errors, and highlight areas of interest for pathologists. Additionally, we present a high-quality, hand-curated dataset of prostate histopathological images annotated at the gland level by trained pre-medical students and verified by an expert pathologist. We highlight the potential of this adaptive and uncertainty-aware framework for developing clinically deployable AI tools that can support pathologists in accurate prostate cancer grading, improve diagnostic accuracy, and create positive patient outcomes., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, one table. 26. Dyslexia Identification: Texas Legislative Trends in Prevalence Rate of Students by School District Locale

Abstract: State legislation serves as a guide and critical influence on the evaluation and identification of students with dyslexia across the United States. The state of Texas has numerous laws and regulations concerning dyslexia, guided by the Texas Administrative Code, Texas Education Code, Texas Occupations Code, and the Texas Education Agency's dyslexia handbook (National Center on Improving Literacy [NCIL], 2021). This article is an analysis of publicly available statewide data to assess the impact federal and state legislative policies have had on the prevalence rate of students with dyslexia in 839 urban and rural school districts in Texas. 839 school districts from the 2016-2017 to 2022-2023 school years were extracted from the Texas Education Agency's Public Education Information Management System. Researchers focused on the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) Corrective Action to the TEA (OSEP, 2018), the TEA state dyslexia handbook revisions (TEA, 2021), and the unique prevalence of rural school districts in Texas (Simmons et al., 2021). Analysis focused on implications for dyslexia evaluation and identification practices for school districts and evaluators within the state.

28. Give Every (Wo)Man Thy Voice: An Examination of the Application of Participatory Action Research to the Pedagogical Practice of Socratic Seminars

Abstract: In envisioning the future of literacy, students' voices are paramount. Students' engagement in classroom talk increases their learning and communication skills, but without intentional implementation, classroom talk can perpetuate hegemony in contemporary classrooms. To better explore this phenomenon, we developed a study in a southeast Texas high school to examine the experiences of lower socioeconomic status female students. The study used a Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, thus encouraging student voice. The findings indicated that female students respond well to Socratic seminar, which can encourage students to take ownership of their learning and be more engaged in classroom conversations. The key themes included (1) establishing space, (2) teacher impact and influence, and (3) teacher progression. The article ends with recommendations and suggestions for teachers to cultivate gender-inclusive and equitable classroom environments, such as honoring student perspectives, encouraging critical feedback, engaging in self-reflection, and transitioning to more student-led activities.

Abstract: The personnel preparation of early intervention/early childhood special educator (EI/ECSE) candidates is a pivotal stage in supporting the development of professionals who can effectively work with young children with and at-risk of developmental disabilities, their families, and other service providers. This process encompasses a multifaceted approach to equip candidates with knowledge, skills, and attitudes/dispositions to successfully work within the field. This compilation article includes multiple authors of each section who share strategies, assignments, tools, and experiences to center the Initial Practice-Based Standards for Early Interventionists/Early Childhood Special Educators (Division for Early Childhood [DEC] of the Council for Exceptional Children [CEC], 2020; hereafter referred to as the EI/ECSE Standards) and DEC's Recommended Practices (RPs). These strategies are shared through a "spiraling curriculum" framework, and progress from an awareness level to reflection of candidates' own practice. In addition, this article shares related resources to consider in planning for innovative coursework and practicum/student teaching opportunities. Specific examples of spiraling experiences to deepen learning through opportunities to introduce content aligned to RPs and EI/ECSE Standards are included.

30. Teacher Candidates' Perspectives on Inclusive Education: A Case Study of Mentored Inclusive Research

Abstract: Pre-service teachers desire an innovative and inclusive future for education yet feel underprepared to realistically transform their future classrooms. In this study, teacher candidates were mentored in inclusive research that captured the perspectives of young adults with significant disabilities during their post-school transitions. Following these experiences, those preparing to become teachers in the US reflected on their research participation. Described in this paper are their influences, ideas, and possible implementation strategies, in particular, during the highly unstable times of the pandemic and associated lockdowns. Two key themes of resilience and complexity were considered pivotal to converting research experiences into future inclusive classroom practices. Additional teacher education strategies support future educators with an open and exploratory approach that conveys deep respect for the educational field.

31. AAC in AACtion: Collaborative Strategies for Special Education Teachers and Speech-Language Pathologists

Abstract: "Augmentative and alternative communication" (AAC) refers to a wide variety of communication devices, systems, tools, and strategies that support or replace spoken language. Augmentative and alternative communication users represent a range of ages, abilities, and communication needs. Support for AAC often begins in the public school setting. Although the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandates public schools to provide adequate assistive technology for communication and training to support implementation, researchers estimate that fewer than 40% of students with communication impairments using AAC are proficient communicators. Barriers to implementation include a lack of training opportunities, limited preparation time, unfamiliarity with AAC systems, and difficulty finding evidence-based strategies for AAC. To address these, we present evidence-based strategies that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and special education teachers may use in collaboration to support students using AAC and practical tips for implementation. Strategies described include aided language modeling, core vocabulary, and communication partner support behaviors. Planning considerations for collaboration are discussed.

32. Examining the Heterogeneous Early Literacy Profiles of First-Grade Students Who Are English Learners

Abstract: This study examined the heterogeneity of early literacy profiles of English learners and non-English learners. Utilizing a latent profile analysis, the degree to which distinct learner profiles emerged was examined using code-based and language-based measures administered in the beginning of first grade. Participants included 11,803 English learners and 34,129 non-English learners. Three early literacy profiles emerged for English learners while four profiles emerged for non-English learners. Both sets of profiles can be identified based on the severity of students' difficulties with component skills rather than the specificity of their difficulties. Resulting profiles in both samples were then utilized to predict performance on a measure of broad reading comprehension administered at the end of first and second grade. Results indicated that the profile that was associated with the greatest success on the later measures of reading comprehension for both samples included the strongest performance on measures of both code-related and language-related skills. Results highlight the heterogeneity of early literacy skills within the English learner and non-English learner populations and demonstrate the importance of designing instruction that addresses the severity of a student's skill deficit.

33. Teaching Children with Autism through Self-Monitored Sibling-Implemented Intervention

Abstract: Involving typically developing (TD) children in delivering interventions can be an effective strategy conducive to long-lasting and generalized behavior changes for their siblings with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, we recruited two sibling dyads and investigated the extent to which TD children could deliver the model-lead-test (MLT) strategy using a self-monitoring checklist when teaching a range of skills to their siblings with ASD. Using the multiple-baseline-across-behaviors design, we found that the self-monitoring checklist effectively produced a high level of treatment fidelity from TD children as they implemented the MLT strategy which, in turn, improved the target skills of their siblings with ASD.

34. Interview-Informed Synthesized Contingency Analyses on Challenging Problem Behavior: A Single-Case Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The purpose of the current study was to conduct a thorough review of the literature on the interview-informed synthesized contingency analysis (IISCA) developed by (Hanley et al., Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis 47:16-36, 2014)) and its subsequent treatment outcomes. A total of 39 articles were identified with 235 participants participating in 293 synthesized contingency analyses (SCAs) and 111 treatment evaluations. Results indicated that 95.56% of identified SCAs were reported to be differentiated. Similarly, reductions in problem behavior were seen in all 111 treatment analyses. Results of the current review, including effect size measures (i.e., Tau-U and Hedge's g), indicate that the IISCA and function-based interventions developed from the results of IISCA produce statistically significant results. Limitations and future directions are also discussed.

35. Parenting Measurement, Normativeness, and Associations with Child Outcomes: Comparing Evidence from Four Non-Western Cultures

Abstract: This study compared parenting across four non-Western cultures to test cross-cultural commonality and specificity principles in three aspects: measurement properties, parenting normativeness, and their associations with child outcomes. Both mothers and fathers (N = 1509 dyads) with preschool-aged children (M = 5.00 years; 48% girls) from urban areas of four countries (Malaysia, N = 372; China, N = 441; Turkey, N = 402; and Japan, N = 294) reported on four parenting constructs (authoritative, authoritarian, group harmony socialization, and intrusive control) and their sub-dimensions using modified culturally relevant measures. Teachers reported on children's internalizing, externalizing, and prosocial behaviors. The commonality principle was supported by two sets of findings: (1) full measurement invariance was established for most parenting constructs and sub-dimensions, except that intrusive control only reached partial scalar invariance, and (2) no variations were found in associations between parenting and any child outcomes across cultures or parent gender at the construct level for all four parenting constructs and at the sub-dimensional level for authoritarian and intrusive control sub-dimensions. The specificity principle was supported by the other two sets of findings: (1) cross-cultural differences in parenting normativeness did not follow the pattern of economic development but yielded culture-specific patterns, and (2) at the sub-dimensional level, the authoritative parenting and group harmony socialization sub-dimensions were differently associated with child outcomes across cultures and/or parent gender. The findings suggested that examining specific dimensions rather than broad parenting constructs is necessary to reflect cultural specificities and nuances. Our study provided a culturally-invariant instrument and a three-step guide for future parenting research to examine cross-cultural commonalities/specificities.

Abstract: High-quality preschool programs are heralded as effective policy solutions to promote low-income children's development and life-long wellbeing. Yet evaluations of recent preschool programs produce puzzling findings, including negative impacts, and divergent, weaker results than demonstration programs implemented in the 1960s and 70s. We provide potential explanations for why modern preschool programs have become less effective, focusing on changes in instructional practices and counterfactual conditions. We also address popular theories that likely do not explain weakening program effectiveness, such as lower preschool quality and low-quality subsequent environments. The field must take seriously the smaller positive, null, and negative impacts from modern programs and strive to understand why effects differ and how to improve program effectiveness through rigorous, longitudinal research.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The research community has historically failed to enroll diverse groups of participants in dementia clinical trials. A unique aspect of dementia care research is the requirement of a study partner, who can attest to the care recipients clinical and functional capacity. The aim of this study is to assess racial and ethnic differences and the importance of various trial considerations among dementia caregivers, in their decision to participate in clinical research as study partners. METHOD: We embedded a vignette about a hypothetical dementia clinical trial in a nationally representative survey of U.S. dementia caregivers, oversampling non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic caregivers. Dementia caregivers were asked about their willingness to participate in the trial with their care recipient and rated the importance of nine considerations in hypothetical decisions to participate. Caregiver demographic characteristics were analyzed as predictors of trial participation in a base demographic model. In a second reasons model caregiver demographic characteristics and the rated importance of the nine considerations were separately analyzed as predictors; both models used survey-weighted logistic regression. RESULT: The sample consisted of 610 dementia caregivers, including 156 non-Hispanic Black and 122 Hispanic caregiver participants. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Supportive care to ensure optimal quality of life is an essential component of cancer care and symptom control across the lifespan. Ongoing advances in cancer treatment, increasing toxicity from many novel treatment regimes, and variations in access to care and cancer outcomes across the globe and resource settings present significant challenges for supportive care delivery. To date, no overarching framework has been developed to guide supportive care development worldwide. As an initial step of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Supportive Care 2030 Movement, we developed a targeted, unifying set of ambition statements to envision the future of supportive cancer care. METHODS: From September 2022 until June 2023, we used a modified Delphi methodology to develop and attain consensus about ambition statements related to supportive cancer care. Leaders of MASCC Study Groups were invited to participate in an Expert Panel for the first two Delphi rounds (and a preliminary round to suggest potential ambition statements). Patient Advocates then examined and provided input regarding the ambition statements. FINDINGS: Twenty-seven Expert Panelists and 11 Patient Advocates participated. Consensus was attained on 13 ambition statements, with two sub-statements. The ambition statements addressed global standards for guideline development and implementation, coordinated and individualized care, dedicated supportive oncology services, self-management, needs for screening and actions, patient education, behavioral support, financial impact minimization, comprehensive survivorship care, and timely palliative care, reflecting collaboration, coordination and team-based approach across all levels. INTERPRETATION: This study is the first to develop shared ambitions for the future of supportive cancer care on a global level. These ambition statements can facilitate a coordinated, resource-stratified, and person-centered approach and inform research, education, clinical services, and policy efforts. This research explores the direct training of RL algorithms in controlled yet realistic real-world settings for the execution of dexterous manipulation. The benchmarking results of three RL algorithms trained on intricate in-hand manipulation tasks within practical real-world contexts are presented. Our study not only demonstrates the practicality of RL training in authentic real-world scenarios, facilitating direct real-world applications, but also provides insights into the associated challenges and considerations. Additionally, our experiences with the employed experimental methods are shared, with the aim of empowering and engaging fellow researchers and practitioners in this dynamic field of robotics.

Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

41. Aliasing and Label-Independent Decomposition of Risk: Beyond the bias-variance trade-off

Abstract: A central problem in data science is to use potentially noisy samples of an unknown function to predict function values for unseen inputs. In classical statistics, the predictive error is understood as a trade-off between the bias and the variance that balances model simplicity with its ability to fit complex functions. However, over-parameterized models exhibit counter-intuitive behaviors, such as "double descent" in which models of increasing complexity exhibit decreasing generalization error. In contrast to the bias-variance trade-off, we introduce an alternative paradigm called the generalized aliasing decomposition (GAD). We explain the asymptotically small error of complex models as a systematic "de-aliasing" that occurs in the over-parameterized regime. In the limit of large models, the error contribution due to aliasing vanishes, leaving an expression for the asymptotic total error we call the data insufficiency failure of very large models on few training points. Because the generalized aliasing decomposition can be explicitly calculated from the relationship between model class and samples without seeing any data labels, it can answer questions related to experimental design and model selection before collecting data or performing experiments. We demonstrate this approach using several examples, including classical regression problems and a cluster expansion model used in materials science.

Abstract: Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems are powered by foundation models. This paper presents a new set of foundation models, called Llama 3. It is a herd of language models that natively support multilinguality, coding, reasoning, and tool usage. Our largest model is a dense Transformer with 405B parameters and a context window of up to 128K tokens. This paper presents an extensive empirical evaluation of Llama 3. We find that Llama 3 delivers comparable quality to leading language models such as GPT-4 on a plethora of tasks. We publicly release Llama 3, including pre-trained and post-trained versions of the 405B parameter language model and our Llama Guard 3 model for input and output safety. The paper also presents the results of experiments in which we integrate image, video, and speech capabilities into Llama 3 via a compositional approach. We observe this approach performs competitively with the state-of-the-art on image, video, and speech recognition tasks. The resulting models are not yet being broadly released as they are still under development.

43. Measuring What Matters: Intrinsic Distance Preservation as a Robust Metric for Embedding Quality

Abstract: Unsupervised embeddings are fundamental to numerous machine learning applications, yet their evaluation remains a challenging task. Traditional assessment methods often rely on extrinsic variables, such as performance in downstream tasks, which can introduce confounding factors and mask the true quality of embeddings. This paper introduces the Intrinsic Distance Preservation Evaluation (IDPE) method, a novel approach for assessing embedding quality based on the preservation of Mahalanobis distances between data points in the original and embedded spaces. We demonstrate the limitations of extrinsic evaluation methods through a simple example, highlighting how they can lead to misleading conclusions about embedding quality. IDPE addresses these issues by providing a task-independent measure of how well embeddings preserve the intrinsic structure of the original data. Our method leverages efficient similarity search techniques to make it applicable to large-scale datasets. We compare IDPE with established intrinsic metrics like trustworthiness and continuity, as well as extrinsic metrics such as Average Rank and Mean Reciprocal Rank. Our results show that IDPE offers a more comprehensive and reliable assessment of embedding quality across various scenarios. We evaluate PCA and t-SNE embeddings using IDPE, revealing insights into their performance that are not captured by traditional metrics. This work contributes to the field by providing a robust, efficient, and interpretable method for embedding evaluation. IDPE's focus on intrinsic properties offers a valuable tool for researchers and practitioners seeking to develop and assess high-quality embeddings for diverse machine learning applications.

44. Describe, Transform, Machine Learning: Feature Engineering for Grain Boundaries and Other Variable-Sized Atom Clusters

Abstract: Obtaining microscopic structure-property relationships for grain boundaries are challenging because of the complex atomic structures that underlie their behavior. This has led to recent efforts to obtain these relationships with machine learning, but representing a grain boundary structure in a manner suitable for machine learning is not a trivial task. There are three key steps common to property prediction in grain boundaries and other variable-sized atom clustered structures. These are: (1) describe the atomic structure as a feature matrix, (2) transform the variable-sized feature matrices of different structures to a fixed length common to all structures, and (3) apply machine learning to predict properties from the transformed feature matrices. We examine these feature engineering steps to understand how they impact the accuracy of grain boundary energy predictions. A database of over 7000 grain boundaries serves to evaluate the different feature engineering combinations. 45. Giant anisotropic magnetoresistance in few-layer {\alpha}-RuCl3 tunnel junctions

Abstract: The spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator $\alpha$-RuCl3 is proximate to the coveted quantum spin liquid (QSL) predicted by the Kitaev model. In the search for the pure Kitaev QSL, reducing the dimensionality of this frustrated magnet by exfoliation has been proposed as a way to enhance magnetic fluctuations and Kitaev interactions. Here, we perform angle-dependent tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) measurements on ultrathin $\alpha$-RuCl3 crystals with various layer numbers to probe their magnetic, electronic and crystal structure. We observe a giant change in resistance - as large as ~2500% - when the magnetic field rotates either within or out of the $\alpha$-RuCl3 plane, a manifestation of the strongly anisotropic spin interactions in this material. In combination with scanning transmission electron microscopy, this tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) reveals that few-layer $\alpha$-RuCl3 crystals remain in the high-temperature monoclinic phase at low temperature. It also shows the presence of a zigzag antiferromagnetic order below the critical temperature TN ~ 14 K, which is twice the one typically observed in bulk samples with rhombohedral stacking. Our work offers valuable insights into the relation between the stacking order and magnetic properties of this material, which helps lay the groundwork for creating and electrically probing exotic magnetic phases like QSLs via van der Waals engineering.

46. Unsupervised machine learning for detecting mutual independence among eigenstate regimes in interacting quasiperiodic chains

Abstract: Many-body eigenstates that are neither thermal nor many-body-localized (MBL) were numerically found in certain interacting chains with moderate quasiperiodic potentials. The energy regime consisting of these non-ergodic but extended (NEE) eigenstates has been extensively studied for being a possible many-body mobility edge between the energy-resolved MBL and thermal phases. Recently, the NEE regime was further proposed to be a prethermal phenomenon that generally occurs when different operators spread at sizably different timescales. Here, we numerically examine the mutual independence among the NEE, MBL, and thermal regimes in the lens of eigenstate entanglement spectra (ES). Given the complexity and rich information embedded in ES, we develop an unsupervised learning approach that is designed to quantify the mutual independence among general phases. Our method is first demonstrated on an illustrative toy example that uses RGB color data to represent phases, then applied to the ES of an interacting generalized Aubry Andre model from weak to strong potential strength. We find that while the MBL and thermal regimes are mutually independent, the NEE regime is dependent on the former two and smoothly appears as the potential strength decreases. We attribute our numerically finding to the fact that the ES data in the NEE regime exhibits both an MBL-like fast decay and a thermal-like long tail., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

47. More is Different: Mobile Ions Improve the Design Tolerances of Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract: Many recent advances in metal halide perovskite solar cell (PSC) performance are attributed to surface treatments which passivate interfacial trap states, minimise charge recombination and boost photovoltages. Surprisingly, these photovoltages exceed the cells' built-in potentials, often with large energetic offsets reported between the perovskite and transport layer semiconductor band edges - contradicting standard photovoltaic design principles. Here we show that this tolerance to energetic offsets results from mixed ionic/electronic conduction in the perovskite layer. Combining drift-diffusion simulations with experiments probing the current-voltage performance of PSCs as a function of ion distribution, we demonstrate that electrostatic redistribution of ionic charge reduces surface recombination currents at steady-state, increasing the photovoltage by tens to hundreds of millivolts. Thus, mobile ions can reduce the sensitivity of photovoltage to energetic misalignments at perovskite/transport layer interfaces, benefitting overall efficiency. Building on these insights, we show how photovoltaic design principles are modified to account for mobile ions.

Abstract: Recent work has shown diffusion models are an effective approach to learning the multimodal distributions arising from demonstration data in behavior cloning. However, a drawback of this approach is the need to learn a denoising function, which is significantly more complex than learning an explicit policy. In this work, we propose Equivariant Diffusion Policy, a novel diffusion policy learning method that leverages domain symmetries to obtain better sample efficiency and generalization in the denoising function. We theoretically analyze the $\mathrm{SO}(2)$ symmetry of full 6-DoF control and characterize when a diffusion model is $\mathrm{SO}(2)$-equivariant. We furthermore evaluate the method empirically on a set of 12 simulation tasks in MimicGen, and show that it obtains a success rate that is, on average, 21.9% higher than the baseline Diffusion Policy. 49. Robust Hilbert space fragmentation in group-valued loop models

Abstract: We introduce a large class of models exhibiting robust ergodicity breaking in quantum dynamics. Our work is inspired by recent discussions of "topologically robust Hilbert space fragmentation," but massively generalizes in two directions: firstly from states describable as "loop-soups" to a broader class of states reminiscent of string-nets and sponges, and secondly from models restricted to square or cubic lattices, to models defined on arbitrary lattices (and even arbitrary graphs without translation invariance). Our constructions leverage a recently proposed group-theory framework [PRX 14, 021034 (2024)], and identify a host of new phenomena arising from the interplay of "group-model dynamics" and lattice structure. 50. Additively manufacturable high-strength aluminum alloys with thermally stable microstructures enabled by hybrid machine learning-based design

Abstract: Additively manufactured (AM) structural components with complex geometries and tailored properties at voxel-size resolution will lead to significant leap in performance in various critical engineering applications. However, at each voxel, we first need to be able to design the alloy efficiently and reliably. We demonstrate a hybrid approach combining calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD)-based integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) with machine learning and inverse design techniques and performed a full alloy design cycle of a novel Al alloy (Al-Er-Zr-Y-Yb-Ni) for AM from virtual predictions to experimental validation. We designed this alloy to exhibit high tensile strength at room temperature through nanoscale L1$_2$-phase precipitation which stabilizes the microstructure to maintain strength after high-temperature aging. We initially exploit a fine distribution of metastable eutectic ternary phases through rapid solidification, which serve as the source for the reactive elements enabling nanoscale precipitation of a high phase fraction of the thermally stable L1$_2$ strengthening phases. The strength of the 3D-printed samples manufactured via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) from the designed composition is comparable to that of wrought Al 7075, and after high-temperature (400$^\circ$C) aging is 50% stronger than the best benchmark printable Al alloy1. The stable strengthening strategy is applicable to a wide range of alloys and rapid solidification processes, and our hybrid ML/CALPHAD numerical framework can be used for the efficient and robust design of alloy microstructures and properties, expanding the capabilities of additive as well as traditional manufacturing.
