We present a thorough soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of a mesoporous titanium dioxide electrode sensitized with the dye 4-(diphenylamino)phenylcyanoacrylic acid, referred to as "L0." Supported by calculations, the suite of XPS, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy allows us to examine bonding interactions between the dye and the surface and the frontier electronic structure at the molecule–oxide interface. While placing these measurements in the context of existing literature, this paper is intended as a useful reference for further studies of more complex triphenylamine based sensitizers. Sensors that harness quantum mechanical effects can enable high sensitivity and high spatial resolution probing of their environment. The nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond, a single, optically accessible electronic spin, is a promising quantum sensor that can operate in soft and living systems and provides nanoscale spatial resolution when hosted inside a diamond nanoparticle. Nanodiamond quantum sensors are nontoxic, amenable to surface functionalization, and can be introduced into a variety of living systems. The optical readout of the spin provides detailed information about the local electromagnetic and thermal environment in a noninvasive way. In this Perspective, we introduce the different modalities that nanodiamond quantum sensors offer, highlight recent progress in quantum sensing of biological systems, and discuss remaining challenges and directions for future efforts. For the 131 most part, he overlooks how these philosophical elements inform, and are shaped by, Stevens's poetic practice.[9] Concentrating on another of Stevens's meditative texts, Dan Disney uses the attitude to poetic form suggested in "An Ordinary Evening in New Haven" as an exegesis of Plato, positing that poets create "a different style of attaching thinking and language."[10] But this insistence on getting back to Plato through Stevens coupled with a focus on matters of epistemology misinterprets how Stevens distances himself from conceiving of the poet's knowledge as transcendent; in other words, Stevens is not simply substituting one set of final principles for another. There is continued growth in the number of master's degrees awarded in the life sciences to address the evolving needs of the biomedical workforce. Academic medical centers leverage the expertise of their faculty and industry partners to develop one to two year intensive and multidisciplinary master's programs that equip students with advanced scientific skills and practical training experiences. However, there is little data published on the outcomes of these graduates to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs and to inform the return on investment of students. Here, the authors show the first five-year career outlook for master of science graduates from programs housed at an academic medical center. Georgetown University Biomedical Graduate Education researchers analyzed the placement outcomes of 1,204 graduates from 2014–2018, and the two-year outcomes of 412 graduates from 2016 and 2017. From the 15 M.S. programs analyzed, they found that 69% of graduates entered the workforce, while 28% entered an advanced degree program such as a Ph.D., allopathic or osteopathic medicine (M.D. or D.O.), or health professions degree. International students who pursue advanced degrees largely pursued Ph.D. degrees, while domestic students represent the majority of students entering into medical programs. Researchers found that a majority of the alumni that entered the workforce pursue research-based work, with 59% of graduates conducting research-based job functions across industries. Forty-nine percent of employed graduates analyzed from 2016 and 2017 changed employment positions, while 15% entered advanced degree programs. Alumni that changed positions changed companies in the same job function, changed to a position of increasing responsibility in the same or different organization, or changed to a different job function in the same or different company. Overall, standalone master's programs equip graduates with research skills, analytical prowess, and content expertise, strengthening the talent pipeline of the biomedical workforce. • Non-volatile organic dye molecules have been deposited on single crystal rutile TiO2(110) surfaces using UHV-compatible electrospray deposition. • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the organic dye molecules interact with the surface via deprotontation of the carboxylic acid end group. • Insight into complex dye molecules is gained by studying simpler analogues alongside. • The ability to study complex molecules on surfaces using traditional surface science technique enables research into realistic light harvesting interfaces. We present an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of a series of organic triphenylamine-based organic dye molecules (D5, SC4 and R6) deposited onto an atomically clean TiO 2 (110) single crystal surface by vacuum-compatible electrospray deposition. Coverages from sub-monolayer to few-layer are explored to determine the nature of the adsorption bond to the surface. In all three cases the dyes are found to anchor to the oxide surface via the deprotonation of the carboxylic group with little evidence of secondary bonding interactions. The XPS measurements show the intact deposition of the dyes onto the surface in a UHV environment facilitating the study of these model dye-sensitised solar cell systems using surface science techniques. Here we use computational modeling to design a template to direct the formation of an 18‐porphyrin nanoring with direct meso‐meso bonds between the porphyrin units. Coupling of a linear 18‐porphyrin oligomer in the presence of this template gives the target nanoring, together with an unexpected 36‐porphyrin ring by‐product. Rings of porphyrins mimic natural light‐harvesting chlorophyll arrays and offer insights into electronic delocalization, providing a motivation for creating larger nanorings with closely spaced porphyrin units. Here, we demonstrate the first synthesis of a macrocycle consisting entirely of 5,15‐linked porphyrins. This porphyrin octadecamer was constructed using a covalent six‐armed template, made by cobalt‐catalyzed cyclotrimerization of an H‐shaped tolan with porphyrin trimer ends. The porphyrins around the circumference of the nanoring were linked together by intramolecular oxidative meso‐meso coupling and partial β‐β fusion, to give a nanoring consisting of six edge‐fused zinc(II) porphyrin dimer units and six un‐fused nickel(II) porphyrins. A set of AuNPs- L -TiO2NP nanoaggregates which showed efficient covering of the semiconductor's surface by AuNPs, as well as appropriate AuNP sizes for effective sensibilization were used as photocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Three aliphatic short-chain linkers: 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), thioglycolic acid (TGA) and thiolactic acid (TLA) were used as stabilizing agents. The slight structure variations of the linkers did not produce differences in the AuNP size and morphology. However, it was interesting to show how the photocatalytic performance of the nanoaggregates is dependent on the linker present, as well as to determine the influence of the Au/TiO2 ratio. It was found that TGA gave the best performance at a longer irradiation time, though high amounts of H2 were also obtained for the other two linkers. Furthermore, for all samples large amounts of hydrogen were obtained, which are significantly higher than that usually obtained with plasmon-sensitized TiO2 nanostructures. In addition, high amounts of H2 were obtained after five catalytic cycles for all samples, showing the suitability of these nanoaggregates for the photoinduced HER. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
