We present our approach to making direct numerical simulations of turbulence with applications in sustainable shipping. We use modern Fortran and the spectral element method to leverage and scale on supercomputers powered by the Nvidia A100 and the recent AMD Instinct MI250X GPUs, while still providing support for user software developed in Fortran. We demonstrate the efficiency of our approach by performing the world's first direct numerical simulation of the flow around a Flettner rotor at Re=30'000 and its interaction with a turbulent boundary layer. We present one of the first performance comparisons between the AMD Instinct MI250X and Nvidia A100 GPUs for scalable computational fluid dynamics. Our results show that one MI250X offers performance on par with two A100 GPUs and has a similar power efficiency., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

The phase diagram of five-dimensional SU(2) gauge theories with one compactified dimension on anisotropic lattices has a rich structure. In this contribution we show how to control non-perturbatively the scale hierarchy between the cut-off and the compactification scale in the bare parameter space. There exists a set of strong bare couplings where the the five-dimensional lattice theory can be described by an effective four-dimensional theory with a scalar field in the adjoint representation. We present a detailed study of the light scalar spectrum as it arises from the non-perturbative dynamics of the full five-dimensional lattice theory. We also investigate the mixing with scalar glueball states in the attempt to further establish the extra-dimensional nature of light scalar states., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. The low-energy dynamics of five-dimensional Yang-Mills theories compactified on S^1 can be described by a four-dimensional gauge theory coupled to a scalar field in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. Perturbative calculations suggest that the mass of this elementary scalar field is protected against power divergences, and is controlled by the size of the extra dimension R. As a first step in the study of this phenomenon beyond perturbation theory, we investigate the phase diagram of a SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in five dimensions regularized on anisotropic lattices and we determine the ratios of the relevant physical scales. The lattice system shows a dimensionally reduced phase where the four-dimensional correlation length is much larger than the size of the extra dimension, but still smaller than the four-dimensional volume. In this region of the bare parameter space, at energies below 1/R, the non-perturbative spectrum contains a \emph{light} scalar state. This state has a mass that is independent of the cut-off, and a small overlap with glueball operators. Our results suggest that light scalar fields can be introduced in a lattice theory using compactified extra dimensions, rather than fine tuning the bare mass parameter., Comment: 38 pages (7 pages of Appendix), 10 tables, 21 figures. Lattice QCD can contribute to the search for new physics in b -> s decays by providing first-principle calculations of B -> K(*) form factors. We present the first two-loop calculation of the heavy quark energy shift in lattice nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). This calculation allow us to extract a preliminary prediction of $m_b(m_b, n_f = 5) = 4.25(12)$ GeV for the mass of the b quark from lattice NRQCD simulations performed with a lattice of spacing $a=0.12$fm. Our result is an improvement on a previous determination of the b quark mass from unquenched lattice NRQCD simulations, which was limited by the use of one-loop expressions for the energy shift. Our value is in good agreement with recent results of $m_b(m_b) = 4.163(16)$ GeV from QCD sum rules and $m_b(m_b, n_f = 5) = 4.170(25)$ GeV from realistic lattice simulations using highly-improved staggered quarks. We employ a mixed strategy to simplify our calculation. Ghost, gluon and counterterm contributions to the energy shift and mass renormalisation are extracted from quenched high-beta simulations whilst fermionic contributions are calculated using automated lattice perturbation theory. We investigate the combined use of moving NRQCD and stochastic sources in lattice calculations of form factors describing rare B and B_s decays. Moving NRQCD leads to a reduction of discretisation errors compared to standard NRQCD. Rare decays of B mesons, such as B \to K^*\gamma and B\to K^{(*)}\ell^+\ell^- are loop suppressed in the Standard Model and sensitive to new physics. The final state meson in heavy-light decays at large recoil has sizeable momentum in the rest frame of the decaying meson. To reduce the resulting discretization errors we formulate the nonrelativistic heavy quark action in a moving frame. We discuss the perturbative renormalization of the leading order heavy-light operators in the resulting theory which is known as m(oving)NRQCD. We also present radiative corrections to the NRQCD action computed using automated lattice perturbation theory. We calculate form factors relevant for rare B decays using moving-NRQCD for the b quark and the AsqTad action for the light quarks. Moving NRQCD allows us to work directly with the physical b quark mass and go to higher recoil momentum compared to standard NRQCD. Here, we show first results for the matrix elements and the operator matching coefficients. Accurately calculating the mass of flavor-singlet meson states from numerical lattice simulations is an important milestone for lattice QCD. Careful measurement of the full pseudoscalar flavor-singlet propagator is also a crucial step in understanding the dynamics of the fermion sea on the lattice, in particular for potentially non-trivial formulations such as with 2+1-flavor staggered fermions. We briefly describe details of a dynamical QCD calculation using improved staggered fermions, with 30,000 trajectories, that was run for our studies of flavour singlet mesons., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. We present results for the dependence of the residual mass of domain wall fermions (DWF) on the size of the fifth dimension and its relation to the density and localization properties of low-lying eigenvectors of the corresponding hermitian Wilson Dirac operator relevant to simulations of 2+1 flavor domain wall QCD. Using the DBW2 and Iwasaki gauge actions, we generate ensembles of configurations with a $16^3\times 32$ space-time volume and an extent of 8 in the fifth dimension for the sea quarks. We demonstrate the existence of a regime where the degree of locality, the size of chiral symmetry breaking and the rate of topology change can be acceptable for inverse lattice spacings $a^{-1} \ge 1.6$ GeV., Comment: 59 Pages, 23 figures, 1 MPG linked

We compute the mass of the singlet 0++ state using both (psi_bar psi) and Wilson loop operators from a N_f=2 lattice QCD calculation., Comment: Lattice2002(spectrum)

We study monopoles and vortices in SU(2) lattice gauge theory on a 24**4 lattice at beta=2.50. We find a value of fundamental string tension from monopoles in the maximum Abelian gauge consistent with the full SU(2) value. Using direct and indirect center gauges, we find fundamental string tension values from P-vortices which are larger than the full SU(2) result. After a single cooling sweep, the string tensions from monopoles and P-vortices are all 30% lower than the full SU(2) value, while the U(1) string tension in the maximum Abelian gauge remains consistent with the full SU(2) result. We derive exact relations for SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions. In terms of Abelian projection, these are the expectation values of Maxwell equations that define a new field strength operator and conserved, dynamic electric currents formed from the charged matter and ghost fields. The effect of gauge fixing is calculated, and in the maximally Abelian gauge we find antiscreening of U(1) Wilson loop source charges.
