Search

Planet formation is strongly influenced by the composition and distribution of volatiles within protoplanetary disks. With JWST, it is now possible to obtain direct observational constraints on disk ices, as recently demonstrated by the detection of ice absorption features towards the edge-on HH 48 NE disk as part of the Ice Age Early Release Science program. Here, we introduce a new radiative transfer modeling framework designed to retrieve the composition and mixing status of disk ices using their band profiles, and apply it to interpret the H2O, CO2, and CO ice bands observed towards the HH 48 NE disk. We show that the ices are largely present as mixtures, with strong evidence for CO trapping in both H2O and CO2 ice. The HH 48 NE disk ice composition (pure vs. polar vs. apolar fractions) is markedly different from earlier protostellar stages, implying thermal and/or chemical reprocessing during the formation or evolution of the disk. We infer low ice-phase C/O ratios around 0.1 throughout the disk, and also demonstrate that the mixing and entrapment of disk ices can dramatically affect the radial dependence of the C/O ratio. It is therefore imperative that realistic disk ice compositions are considered when comparing planetary compositions with potential formation scenarios, which will fortunately be possible for an increasing number of disks with JWST., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 24 pages, 15 figures

Filaments are believed to play a key role in high-mass star formation. We present a systematic study of the filaments and their hosting clumps in the G35 molecular complex using JCMT SCUBA-2 850 $\micron$ continuum data. We identified five clouds in the complex and 91 filaments within them, some of which form 10 hub-filament systems (HFSs), each with at least 3 hub-composing filaments. We also compiled a catalogue of 350 dense clumps, 183 of which are associated with the filaments. We investigated the physical properties of the filaments and clumps, such as mass, density, and size, and their relation to star formation. We find that the global mass-length trend of the filaments is consistent with a turbulent origin, while the hub-composing filaments of high line masses ($m_{\rm l}\,>$\,230\,$\mathrm{M_{\odot}~pc^{-1}}$) in HFSs deviate from this relation, possibly due to feedback from massive star formation. We also find that the most massive and densest clumps (R\,$>$\,0.2\,pc, M\,$>35\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, $\mathrm{\Sigma}>\,0.05\,\mathrm{g~cm^{-2}}$) are located in the filaments and in the hubs of HFS with the latter bearing a higher probability of occurrence of high-mass star-forming signatures, highlighting the preferential sites of HFSs for high-mass star formation. We do not find significant variation in the clump mass surface density across different evolutionary environments of the clouds, which may reflect the balance between mass accretion and stellar feedback., Comment: 34 pages, 17 figures. (abridged) Protostellar outflows exhibit large variations in their structure depending on the observed gas emission. This study analyzes the atomic jet and molecular outflow in the Class I protostar, TMC1A to characterize morphology and identify previously undetected spatial features with JWST's NIRSpec IFU. In addition to identifying a large number of Fe II and H2 lines, we have detected the bipolar Fe jet by revealing, for the first time, the presence of a red-shifted atomic jet. Similarly, the red-shifted component of the H2 slower wide-angle outflow is observed. Both Fe II and H2 red-shifted emission exhibit significantly lower flux densities compared to their blue-shifted counterparts. Additionally, we report the detection of a collimated high-velocity (100 km s-1), blue-shifted H2 outflow, suggesting the presence of a molecular jet in addition to the well-known wider angle low-velocity structure. The Fe II and H2 jets show multiple intensity peaks along the jet axis, which may be associated with ongoing or recent outburst events. In addition to the variation in their intensities, the H2 wide-angle outflow exhibits a "ring"-like structure. The blue-shifted H2 outflow also shows a left-right brightness asymmetry likely due to interactions with the surrounding ambient medium and molecular outflows. Using the Fe II line ratios, the extinction along the atomic jet is estimated to be between Av = 10-30 on the blue-shifted side, with a trend of decreasing extinction with distance from the protostar. A similar Av is found for the red-shifted side, supporting the argument for an intrinsic red-blue outflow lobe asymmetry rather than environmental effects such as extinction. This intrinsic difference revealed by the unprecedented sensitivity of JWST, suggests that younger outflows already exhibit the red-blue side asymmetry more commonly observed towards jets associated with Class II disks., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

High-angular resolution imaging by ALMA has revealed the near-universality and diversity of substructures in protoplanetary disks. However, disks around M-type pre-main-sequence stars are still poorly sampled, despite the prevalence of M-dwarfs in the galaxy. Here we present high-resolution (~50 mas, 8 au) ALMA Band 6 observations of six disks around mid-M stars in Taurus. We detect dust continuum emission in all six disks, 12CO in five disks, and 13CO line in two disks. The size ratios between gas and dust disks range from 1.6 to 5.1. The ratio of about 5 for 2M0436 and 2M0450 indicates efficient dust radial drift. Four disks show rings and cavities and two disks are smooth. The cavity sizes occupy a wide range: 60 au for 2M0412, and ~10 au for 2M0434, 2M0436 and 2M0508. Detailed visibility modeling indicates that small cavities of 1.7 and 5.7 au may hide in the two smooth disks 2M0450 and CIDA 12. We perform radiative transfer fitting of the infrared SEDs to constrain the cavity sizes, finding that micron-sized dust grains may have smaller cavities than millimeter grains. Planet-disk interactions are the preferred explanation to produce the large 60 au cavity, while other physics could be responsible for the three ~10 au cavities under current observations and theories. Currently, disks around mid-to-late M stars in Taurus show a higher detection frequency of cavities than earlier type stars, although a more complete sample is needed to evaluate any dependence of substructure on stellar mass., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures. While the most exciting explanation of the observed dust asymmetries in protoplanetary disks is the presence of protoplanets, other mechanisms can also form the dust features. This paper presents dual-wavelength Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of a large asymmetric dusty ring around the M-type star CIDA 9A. We detect a dust asymmetry in both 1.3 mm and 3.1 mm data. To characterize the asymmetric structure, a parametric model is used to fit the observed visibilities. We report a tentative azimuthal shift of the dust emission peaks between the observations at the two wavelengths. This shift is consistent with a dust trap caused by a vortex, which may be formed by an embedded protoplanet or other hydrodynamical instabilities, such as a dead zone. Deep high-spatial observations of dust and molecular gas are needed to constrain the mechanisms that formed the observed millimeter cavity and dust asymmetry in the protoplanetary disk around CIDA 9A., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 12 pages, 7 figures with appendix

Water is a very abundant molecule in star-forming regions. Its deuterium fractionation is an important tool for understanding its formation and evolution during the star and planet formation processes. While the HDO/H$_2$O ratio has been determined toward several Class 0 protostars and comets, the number of studies toward Class I protostars is limited. We aim to study the water deuteration toward the Class I binary protostar L1551 IRS5 and to investigate the effect of evolutionary stage and environment on variations in the water D/H ratio. Observations were made using the NOEMA interferometer. The HDO 3$_{1,2}$-2$_{2,1}$ transition at 225.9 GHz and the H$_2^{18}$O 3$_{1,3}$-2$_{2,0}$ transition at 203.4 GHz were covered with a spatial resolution of 0.5'' $\times$ 0.8'', while the HDO 4$_{2,2}$-4$_{2,3}$ transition at 143.7 GHz was observed with a resolution of 2.0'' $\times$ 2.5''. We used both LTE and non-LTE models. The three transitions are detected. The line profiles display two peaks, one at $\sim$6 km s$^{-1}$ and one at $\sim$9 km s$^{-1}$. We derive an HDO/H$_2$O ratio of (2.1 $\pm$ 0.8) $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ for the redshifted component and a lower limit of $>$ 0.3 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ for the blueshifted component due to the blending with the redshifted CH$_3$OCH$_3$ emission. The HDO/H$_2$O in L1551 IRS5 is similar to the ratios in isolated Class 0 sources and to the Class I V883 Ori, while it is significantly higher than in the clustered Class 0 sources and the comets. This suggests that the chemistry of protostars in low source densities clouds share more similarities with the isolated sources than the protostars of very dense clusters. If Class 0 protostars with few sources around and isolated Class 0 objects are comparable in the HDO/H$_2$O ratio, it would mean that there is little water reprocessing from the Class 0 to Class I protostellar stage., Comment: Accepted in A&A, 10 pages, 8 figures

Previous observations of B335 have presented evidence of ongoing infall in various molecular lines, e.g., HCO$^+$, HCN, CO. There have been no confirmed observations of a rotationally supported disk on scales greater than ~12~au. The presence of an outflow in B335 suggests that also a disk should be present or in formation. To constrain the earliest stages of protostellar evolution and disk formation, we aim to map the region where gas falls inwards and observationally constrain its kinematics. Furthermore, we aim to put strong limits on the size and orientation of any disk-like structure in B335. We use high angular resolution $^{13}$CO data from ALMA, and combine it with shorter-baseline archival data to produce a high-fidelity image of the infall in B335. We also revisit the imaging of high-angular resolution Band 6 continuum data to study the dust distribution in the immediate vicinity of B335. Continuum emission shows an elliptical structure (10 by 7 au) with a position angle 5 degrees east of north, consistent with the expectation for a forming disk in B335. A map of the infall velocity (as estimated from the $^{13}$CO emission), shows evidence of asymmetric infall, predominantly from the north and south. Close to the protostar, infall velocities appear to exceed free-fall velocities. 3D radiative transfer models, where the infall velocity is allowed to vary within the infall region, can explain the observed kinematics. The data suggests that a disk has started to form in B335 and that gas is falling towards that disk. However, kinematically-resolved line data towards the disk itself is needed to confirm the presence of a rotationally supported disk around this young protostar. The measured high infall velocities are not easily reconcilable with a magnetic braking scenario and suggest that there is a pressure gradient that allows the infall velocity to vary in the region., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Outflows and winds launched from young stars play a crucial role in the evolution of protostars and the early stages of planet formation. However, the specific details of the mechanism behind these phenomena, including how they affect the protoplanetary disk structure, are still debated. We present {\it JWST} NIRSpec Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of atomic and H$_2$ lines from 1 -- 5.1 $\mu$m toward the low-mass protostar TMC1A. For the first time, a collimated atomic jet is detected from TMC1A in the [Fe II] line at 1.644 $\mu$m along with corresponding extended H$_2$ 2.12 $\mu$m emission. Towards the protostar, we detected spectrally broad H I and He I emissions with velocities up to 300 km/s that can be explained by a combination of protostellar accretion and a wide-angle wind. The 2$\mu$m continuum dust emission, H I, He I, and O I all show emission from the illuminated outflow cavity wall and scattered line emission. These observations demonstrate the potential of {\it JWST} to characterize and reveal new information about the hot inner regions of nearby protostars. Most stars form in multiple star systems. For a better understanding of their formation processes, it is important to resolve the individual protostellar components and the surrounding envelope and disk material at the earliest possible formation epoch because the formation history can be lost in a few orbital timescales. Here we present the ALMA observational results of a young multiple protostellar system, IRAS 04239+2436, where three well-developed large spiral arms were detected in the shocked SO emission. Along the most conspicuous arm, the accretion streamer was also detected in the SO$_2$ emission. The observational results are complemented by numerical magneto-hydrodynamic simulations, where those large arms only appear in magnetically weakened clouds. The numerical simulations also suggest that the large triple spiral arms are the result of gravitational interactions between compact triple protostars and the turbulent infalling envelope., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Planet formation imprints signatures on the physical structures of disks. In this paper, we present high-resolution ($\sim$50 mas, 8 au) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of 1.3 mm dust continuum and CO line emission toward the disk around the M3.5 star 2MASS J04124068+2438157. The dust disk consists only of two narrow rings at radial distances of 0.47 and 0.78 arcsec ($\sim$70 and 116 au), with Gaussian $\sigma$ widths of 5.6 and 8.5 au, respectively. The width of the outer ring is smaller than the estimated pressure scale height by $\sim25\%$, suggesting dust trapping in a radial pressure bump. The dust disk size, set by the location of the outermost ring, is significantly larger (by $3\sigma$) than other disks with similar millimeter luminosity, which can be explained by an early formation of local pressure bump to stop radial drift of millimeter dust grains. After considering the disk's physical structure and accretion properties, we prefer planet--disk interaction over dead zone or photoevaporation models to explain the observed dust disk morphology. We carry out high-contrast imaging at $L'$ band using Keck/NIRC2 to search for potential young planets, but do not identify any source above $5\sigma$. Within the dust gap between the two rings, we reach a contrast level of $\sim$7 mag, constraining the possible planet below $\sim$2--4 $M_{\rm Jup}$. Analyses of the gap/ring properties suggest a $\sim$Saturn mass planet at $\sim$90 au is likely responsible for the formation of the outer ring, which can be potentially revealed with JWST., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. The water snowline in circumstellar disks is a crucial component in planet formation, but direct observational constraints on its location remain sparse due to the difficulty of observing water in both young embedded and mature protoplanetary disks. Chemical imaging provides an alternative route to locate the snowline, and HCO$^+$ isotopologues have been shown to be good tracers in protostellar envelopes and Herbig disks. Here we present $\sim$0.5$^{\prime\prime}$ resolution ($\sim$35 au radius) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of HCO$^+$ $J=4-3$ and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ $J=3-2$ toward the young (Class 0/I) disk L1527 IRS. Using a source-specific physical model with the midplane snowline at 3.4 au and a small chemical network, we are able to reproduce the HCO$^+$ and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ emission, but for HCO$^+$ only when the cosmic ray ionization rate is lowered to $10^{-18}$ s$^{-1}$. Even though the observations are not sensitive to the expected HCO$^+$ abundance drop across the snowline, the reduction in HCO$^+$ above the snow surface and the global temperature structure allow us to constrain a snowline location between 1.8 and 4.1 au. Deep observations are required to eliminate the envelope contribution to the emission and to derive more stringent constraints on the snowline location. Locating the snowline in young disks directly with observations of H$_2$O isotopologues may therefore still be an alternative option. While protoplanetary disks are often treated as isolated systems in planet formation models, observations increasingly suggest that vigorous interactions between Class II disks and their environments are not rare. DO Tau is a T Tauri star that has previously been hypothesized to have undergone a close encounter with the HV Tau system. As part of the DESTINYS ESO Large Programme, we present new VLT/SPHERE polarimetric observations of DO Tau and combine them with archival HST scattered light images and ALMA observations of CO isotopologues and CS to map a network of complex structures. The SPHERE and ALMA observations show that the circumstellar disk is connected to arms extending out to several hundred au. HST and ALMA also reveal stream-like structures northeast of DO Tau, some of which are at least several thousand au long. These streams appear not to be gravitationally bound to DO Tau, and comparisons with previous Herschel far-IR observations suggest that the streams are part of a bridge-like structure connecting DO Tau and HV Tau. We also detect a fainter redshifted counterpart to a previously known blueshifted CO outflow. While some of DO Tau's complex structures could be attributed to a recent disk-disk encounter, they might be explained alternatively by interactions with remnant material from the star formation process. The size of a disk encodes important information about its evolution. Combining new Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations with archival Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) data, we analyze mm continuum and CO emission line sizes for a sample of 44 protoplanetary disks around stars with masses of 0.15--2\,$M_{\odot}$ in several nearby star-forming regions. Sizes measured from $^{12}$CO line emission span from 50 to 1000\,au. This range could be explained by viscous evolution models with different $\alpha$ values (mostly of $10^{-4}-10^{-3}$) and/or a spread of initial conditions. The CO sizes for most disks are also consistent with MHD wind models that directly remove disk angular momentum, but very large initial disk sizes would be required to account for the very extended CO disks in the sample. As no CO size evolution is observed across stellar ages of 0.5--20\,Myr in this sample, determining the dominant mechanism of disk evolution will require a more complete sample for both younger and more evolved systems. We find that the CO emission is universally more extended than the continuum emission by an average factor of $2.9\pm1.2$. The ratio of the CO to continuum sizes does not show any trend with stellar mass, mm continuum luminosity, or the properties of substructures. The GO Tau disk has the most extended CO emission in this sample, with an extreme CO to continuum size ratio of 7.6. Seven additional disks in the sample show high size ratios ($\gtrsim4$) that we interpret as clear signs of substantial radial drift., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Our understanding of planet formation has been rapidly evolving in recent years. The classical planet formation theory, developed when the only known planetary system was our own Solar System, has been revised to account for the observed diversity of the exoplanetary systems. At the same time, the increasing observational capabilities of the young stars and their surrounding disks bring new constraints on the planet formation process. In this chapter, we summarize the new information derived from the exoplanets population and the circumstellar disks observations. We present the new developments in planet formation theory, from dust evolution to the growth of planetary cores by accretion of planetesimals, pebbles, and gas. We review the state-of-the-art models for the formation of diverse planetary systems, including the population synthesis approach which is necessary to compare theoretical model outcomes to the exoplanet population. We emphasize that the planet formation process may not be spatially uniform in the disk and there are preferential locations for the formation of planetesimals and planets. Outside of these locations, a significant fraction of solids is not growing past the pebble-sizes. The reservoir of pebbles plays an important role in the growth of planetary cores in the pebble accretion process. The timescale of the emergence of massive planetary cores is an important aspect of the present models and it is likely that the cores within one disk form at different times. Context: Gas accretion flows transport material from the cloud core onto the protostar. In multiple protostellar systems, it is not clear if the delivery mechanism is preferential or evenly distributed among the components. Aims: Gas accretion flows within IRAS16293 is explored out to 6000 AU. Methods: ALMA Band 3 observations of low-$J$ transitions of HNC, cyanopolyynes (HC$_3$N, HC$_5$N), and N$_2$H$^+$ are used to probe the cloud core structure at ~100 AU resolution. Additional Band 3 archival data provide low-$J$ HCN and SiO lines. These data are compared with the corresponding higher-$J$ lines from the PILS Band 7 data for excitation analysis. The HNC/HCN ratio is used as a temperature tracer. Results: The low-$J$ transitions of HC$_3$N, HC$_5$N, HNC and N$_2$H$^+$ trace extended and elongated structures from 6000 AU down to ~100 AU, without accompanying dust continuum emission. Two structures are identified: one traces a flow that is likely accreting toward the most luminous component of the system IRAS16293 A. Temperatures inferred from the HCN/HNC ratio suggest that the gas in this flow is cold, between 10 and 30 K. The other structure is part of an UV-irradiated cavity wall entrained by one of the outflows. The two outflows driven by IRAS16293 A present different molecular gas distributions. Conclusions: Accretion of cold gas is seen from 6000 AU scales onto IRAS16293 A, but not onto source B, indicates that cloud core material accretion is competitive due to feedback onto a dominant component in an embedded multiple protostellar system. The preferential delivery of material could explain the higher luminosity and multiplicity of source A compared to source B. The water snowline location in protostellar envelopes provides crucial information about the thermal structure and the mass accretion process as it can inform about the occurrence of recent ($\lesssim$1,000 yr) accretion bursts. In addition, the ability to image water emission makes these sources excellent laboratories to test indirect snowline tracers such as H$^{13}$CO$^+$. We study the water snowline in five protostellar envelopes in Perseus using a suite of molecular line observations taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at $\sim$0.2$^{\prime\prime}-$0.7$^{\prime\prime}$ (60--210 au) resolution. B1-c provides a textbook example of compact H$_2^{18}$O ($3_{1,3}-2_{2,0}$) and HDO ($3_{1,2}-2_{2,1}$) emission surrounded by a ring of H$^{13}$CO$^+$ ($J=2-1$) and HC$^{18}$O$^+$ ($J=3-2$). Compact HDO surrounded by H$^{13}$CO$^+$ is also detected toward B1-bS. The optically thick main isotopologue HCO$^+$ is not suited to trace the snowline and HC$^{18}$O$^+$ is a better tracer than H$^{13}$CO$^+$ due to a lower contribution from the outer envelope. However, since a detailed analysis is needed to derive a snowline location from H$^{13}$CO$^+$ or HC$^{18}$O$^+$ emission, their true value as snowline tracer will lie in the application in sources where water cannot be readily detected. For protostellar envelopes, the most straightforward way to locate the water snowline is through observations of H$_2^{18}$O or HDO. Including all sub-arcsecond resolution water observations from the literature, we derive an average burst interval of $\sim$10,000 yr, but high-resolution water observations of a larger number of protostars is required to better constrain the burst frequency., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the four-year survey results of monthly submillimeter monitoring of eight nearby ($< 500 $pc) star-forming regions by the JCMT Transient Survey. We apply the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram technique to search for and characterize variability on 295 submillimeter peaks brighter than 0.14 Jy beam$^{-1}$, including 22 disk sources (Class II), 83 protostars (Class 0/I), and 190 starless sources. We uncover 18 secular variables, all of them protostars. No single-epoch burst or drop events and no inherently stochastic sources are observed. We classify the secular variables by their timescales into three groups: Periodic, Curved, and Linear. For the Curved and Periodic cases, the detectable fractional amplitude, with respect to mean peak brightness, is $\sim4$ % for sources brighter than $\sim$ 0.5 Jy beam$^{-1}$. Limiting our sample to only these bright sources, the observed variable fraction is 37 % (16 out of 43). Considering source evolution, we find a similar fraction of bright variables for both Class 0 and Class I. Using an empirically motivated conversion from submillimeter variability to variation in mass accretion rate, six sources (7 % of our full sample) are predicted to have years-long accretion events during which the excess mass accreted reaches more than 40 % above the total quiescently accreted mass: two previously known eruptive Class I sources, V1647 Ori and EC 53 (V371 Ser), and four Class 0 sources, HOPS 356, HOPS 373, HOPS 383, and West 40. Considering the full protostellar ensemble, the importance of episodic accretion on few years timescale is negligible, only a few percent of the assembled mass. However, given that this accretion is dominated by events of order the observing time-window, it remains uncertain as to whether the importance of episodic events will continue to rise with decades-long monitoring., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The physical and chemical conditions in Class 0/I protostars are fundamental in unlocking the protostellar accretion process and its impact on planet formation. The aim is to determine which physical components are traced by different molecules at sub-arcsecond scales (100 - 400 au). We use a suite of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) datasets in Band 6 (1 mm), Band 5 (1.8 mm) and Band 3 (3 mm) at spatial resolutions 0.5 - 3" for 16 protostellar sources. The protostellar envelope is well traced by C$^{18}$O, DCO$^+$ and N$_2$D$^+$, with the freeze-out of CO governing the chemistry at envelope scales. Molecular outflows are seen in classical shock tracers like SiO and SO, but ice-mantle products such as CH$_3$OH and HNCO released with the shock are also observed. The molecular jet is prominent not only in SiO and SO but also occasionally in H$_2$CO. The cavity walls show tracers of UV-irradiation such as C$_2$H c-C$_3$H$_2$ and CN. The hot inner envelope, apart from showing emission from complex organic molecules (COMs), also presents compact emission from small molecules like H$_2$S, SO, OCS and H$^{13}$CN, most likely related to ice sublimation and high-temperature chemistry. Sub-arcsecond millimeter-wave observations allow to identify those (simple) molecules that best trace each of the physical components of a protostellar system. COMs are found both in the hot inner envelope (high excitation lines) and in the outflows (lower-excitation lines) with comparable abundances. COMs can coexist with hydrocarbons in the same protostellar sources, but they trace different components. Physical processes that govern the star and planet formation sequence influence the chemical composition and evolution of protoplanetary disks. To understand the chemical composition of protoplanets, we need to constrain the composition and structure of the disks from whence they are formed. We aim to determine the molecular abundance structure of the young disk around the TMC1A protostar on au scales in order to understand its chemical structure and any possible implications for disk formation. We present spatially resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of CO, $HCO^{+}$, HCN, DCN, and SO line emission, as well as dust continuum emission, in the vicinity of TMC1A. Molecular column densities are estimated both under the assumption of optically thin emission from molecules in LTE as well as through more detailed non-LTE radiative transfer calculations. Resolved dust continuum emission from the disk is detected between 220 and 260 GHz. Rotational transitions from HCO$^{+}$, HCN, and SO are also detected from the inner 100 au region. From the derived $HCO^{+}$ abundance, we estimate the ionization fraction of the disk surface and find values that imply that the accretion process is not driven by the magneto-rotational instability. The molecular abundances averaged over the TMC1A disk are similar to its protostellar envelope and other, older Class II disks. We meanwhile find a discrepancy between the young disk's molecular abundances relative to Solar System objects. Abundance comparisons between the disk and its surrounding envelope for several molecular species reveal that the bulk of planet-forming material enters the disk unaltered. A diverse array of science goals require accurate flux calibration of observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter array (ALMA), however, this goal remains challenging due to the stochastic time-variability of the ``grid'' quasars ALMA uses for calibration. In this work, we use 343.5 GHz (Band 7) ALMA Atacama Compact Array observations of four bright and stable young stellar objects over 7 epochs to independently assess the accuracy of the ALMA flux calibration and to refine the relative calibration across epochs. The use of these four extra calibrators allow us to achieve an unprecedented relative ALMA calibration accuracy of $\sim 3\%$. On the other hand, when the observatory calibrator catalog is not up-to-date, the Band 7 data calibrated by the ALMA pipeline may have a flux calibration poorer than the nominal 10\%, which can be exacerbated by weather-related phase decorrelation when self-calibration of the science target is either not possible or not attempted. We also uncover a relative flux calibration uncertainty between spectral windows of 0.8\%, implying that measuring spectral indices within a single ALMA band is likely highly uncertain. We thus recommend various methods for science goals requiring high flux accuracy and robust calibration, in particular, the observation of additional calibrators combined with a relative calibration strategy, and observation of solar system objects for high absolute accuracy.

The chemical composition of gas and ice in disks around young stars set the bulk composition of planets. In contrast to protoplanetary disks (Class II), young disks that are still embedded in their natal envelope (Class 0 and I) are predicted to be too warm for CO to freeze out, as has been confirmed observationally for L1527 IRS. To establish whether young disks are generally warmer than their more evolved counterparts, we observed five young (Class 0/I and Class I) disks in Taurus with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), targeting C$^{17}$O $2-1$, H$_2$CO $3_{1,2}-2_{1,1}$, HDO $3_{1,2}-2_{2,1}$ and CH$_3$OH $5_K-4_K$ transitions at $0.48^{\prime\prime} \times 0.31^{\prime\prime}$ resolution. The different freeze-out temperatures of these species allow us to derive a global temperature structure. C$^{17}$O and H$_2$CO are detected in all disks, with no signs of CO freeze-out in the inner $\sim$100 au, and a CO abundance close to $\sim$10$^{-4}$. H$_2$CO emission originates in the surface layers of the two edge-on disks, as witnessed by the especially beautiful V-shaped emission pattern in IRAS~04302+2247. HDO and CH$_3$OH are not detected, with column density upper limits more than 100 times lower than for hot cores. Young disks are thus found to be warmer than more evolved protoplanetary disks around solar analogues, with no CO freeze-out (or only in the outermost part of $\gtrsim$100 au disks) or CO processing. We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations for three protoplanetary disks in Taurus at 2.9\,mm and comparisons with previous 1.3\,mm data both at an angular resolution of $\sim0.''1$ (15\,au for the distance of Taurus). In the single-ring disk DS Tau, double-ring disk GO Tau, and multiple-ring disk DL Tau, the same rings are detected at both wavelengths, with radial locations spanning from 50 to 120\,au. To quantify the dust emission morphology, the observed visibilities are modeled with a parametric prescription for the radial intensity profile. The disk outer radii, taken as 95\% of the total flux encircled in the model intensity profiles, are consistent at both wavelengths for the three disks. Dust evolution models show that dust trapping in local pressure maxima in the outer disk could explain the observed patterns. Dust rings are mostly unresolved. The marginally resolved ring in DS Tau shows a tentatively narrower ring at the longer wavelength, an observational feature expected from efficient dust trapping. The spectral index ($\alpha_{\rm mm}$) increases outward and exhibits local minima that correspond to the peaks of dust rings, indicative of the changes in grain properties across the disks. The low optical depths ($\tau\sim$0.1--0.2 at 2.9\,mm and 0.2--0.4 at 1.3\,mm) in the dust rings suggest that grains in the rings may have grown to millimeter sizes. The ubiquitous dust rings in protoplanetary disks modify the overall dynamics and evolution of dust grains, likely paving the way towards the new generation of planet formation., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Water is a key volatile that provides insights into the initial stages of planet formation. The low water abundances inferred from water observations toward low-mass protostellar objects may point to a rapid locking of water as ice by large dust grains during star and planet formation. However, little is known about the water vapor abundance in newly formed planet-forming disks. We aim to determine the water abundance in embedded Keplerian disks through spatially-resolved observations of H$_2^{18}$O lines to understand the evolution of water during star and planet formation. We present H$_2^{18}$O line observations with ALMA and NOEMA millimeter interferometers toward five young stellar objects. NOEMA observed the 3$_{1,3}$ - $2_{2,0}$ line (E$_{\rm up}$ = 203.7 K) while ALMA targeted the $4_{1,4}$ - $3_{2,1}$ line (E$_{\rm up}$ = 322.0 K). Water column densities are derived considering optically thin and thermalized emission. Our observations are sensitive to the emission from the known Keplerian disks around three out of the five Class I objects in the sample. No H$_2^{18}$O emission is detected toward any of our five Class I disks. We report upper limits to the integrated line intensities. The inferred water column densities in Class I disks are N < 10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$ on 100 au scales which include both disk and envelope. The upper limits imply a disk-averaged water abundance of $\lesssim 10^{-6}$ with respect to H$_2$ for Class I objects. After taking into account the physical structure of the disk, the upper limit to the water abundance averaged over the inner warm disk with $T>$ 100 K is between 10$^{-7}$ up to 10$^{-5}$. Water vapor is not abundant in warm protostellar envelopes around Class I protostars. Context. The relationship between outflow launching and formation of accretion disks around young stellar objects is still not entirely understood, which is why spectrally and spatially resolved observations are needed. Recently, the Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA) has carried out long-baseline observations towards a handful of sources, revealing connections between outflows and the inner regions of disks. Aims. Here we aim to determine the small-scale kinematic and morphological properties of the outflow from the isolated protostar B335 for which no Keplerian disk has, so far, been observed on scales down to 10 au. Methods. We use ALMA in its longest-baseline configuration to observe emission from CO isotopologs, SiO, SO$_2$ and CH$_3$OH. The proximity of B335 provides a resolution of ~3 au (0.03''). We also combine our long-baseline data with archival data to produce a high-fidelity image covering scales up to 700 au (7''). Results. $^{12}$CO has a X-shaped morphology with arms ~50 au in width that we associate with the walls of an outflow cavity, similar to what is observed on larger scales. Long-baseline continuum emission is confined to <7 au of the protostar, while short-baseline continuum emission follows the $^{12}$CO outflow and cavity walls. Methanol is detected within ~30 au of the protostar. SiO is also detected in the vicinity of the protostar, but extended along the outflow. Conclusions. The $^{12}$CO outflow shows no clear signs of rotation at distances $\gtrsim$30 au from the protostar. SiO traces the protostellar jet on small scales, but without obvious rotation. CH$_3$OH and SO$_2$ trace a region <16 au in diameter, centred on the continuum peak, which is clearly rotating. We present a high-resolution ($\sim0.''12$, $\sim16$ au, mean sensitivity of $50~\mu$Jy~beam$^{-1}$ at 225 GHz) snapshot survey of 32 protoplanetary disks around young stars with spectral type earlier than M3 in the Taurus star-forming region using Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). This sample includes most mid-infrared excess members that were not previously imaged at high spatial resolution, excluding close binaries and highly extincted objects, thereby providing a more representative look at disk properties at 1--2 Myr. Our 1.3 mm continuum maps reveal 12 disks with prominent dust gaps and rings, 2 of which are around primary stars in wide binaries, and 20 disks with no resolved features at the observed resolution (hereafter smooth disks), 8 of which are around the primary star in wide binaries. The smooth disks were classified based on their lack of resolved substructures, but their most prominent property is that they are all compact with small effective emission radii ($R_{\rm eff,95\%} \lesssim 50$ au). In contrast, all disks with $R_{\rm eff,95\%}$ of at least 55 au in our sample show detectable substructures. Nevertheless, their inner emission cores (inside the resolved gaps) have similar peak brightness, power law profiles, and transition radii to the compact smooth disks, so the primary difference between these two categories is the lack of outer substructures in the latter. These compact disks may lose their outer disk through fast radial drift without dust trapping, or they might be born with small sizes. The compact dust disks, as well as the inner disk cores of extended ring disks, that look smooth at the current resolution will likely show small-scale or low-contrast substructures at higher resolution. We report new Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) Band 3 observations at 2.75 mm of the TD around SR 24S with an angular resolution of $\sim$0.11''$\times$ 0.09'' and a peak signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim24$. We detect an inner disk and a mostly symmetric ring-like structure that peaks at $\sim$0.32'', that is $\sim$37 au at a distance of $\sim$114.4 pc. The full width at half maximum of this ring is $\sim$28 au. We analyze the observed structures by fitting the dust continuum visibilities using different models for the intensity profile, and compare with previous ALMA observations of the same disk at 0.45 mm and 1.30 mm. We qualitatively compare the results of these fits with theoretical predictions of different scenarios for the formation of a cavity or large gap. The comparison of the dust continuum structure between different ALMA bands indicates that photoevaporation and dead zone can be excluded as leading mechanisms for the cavity formation in SR 24S disk, leaving the planet scenario (single or multiple planets) as the most plausible mechanism. We compared the 2.75 mm emission with published (sub-)centimeter data and find that the inner disk is likely tracing dust thermal emission. This implies that any companion in the system should allow dust to move inwards throughout the gap and replenish the inner disk. In the case of one single planet, this puts strong constraints on the mass of the potential planet inside the cavity and the disk viscosity of about $\lesssim$5 $M_{\rm{Jup}}$ and $\alpha\sim10^{-4}-10^{-3}$, respectively., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Micro- and nanosatellites have become popular platforms for a variety of commercial and scientific applications, but today are considered suitable mainly for short and low-priority space missions due to their low reliability. In part, this can be attributed to their reliance upon cheap, low-feature size, COTS components originally designed for embedded and mobile-market applications, for which traditional hardware-voting concepts are ineffective. Software-fault-tolerance concepts have been shown effective for such systems, but have largely been ignored by the space industry due to low maturity, as most have only been researched in theory. In practice, designers of payload instruments and miniaturized satellites are usually forced to sacrifice reliability in favor deliver the level of performance necessary for cutting-edge science and innovative commercial applications. Thus, we developed a software-fault-tolerance-approach based upon thread-level coarse-grain lockstep, which was validated using fault-injection. To offer strong long-term fault coverage, our architecture is implemented as tiled MPSoC on an FPGA, utilizing partial reconfiguration, as well as mixed criticality. This architecture can satisfy the high performance requirements of current and future scientific and commercial space missions at very low cost, while offering the strong fault-coverage guarantees necessary for platform control even for missions with a long duration. This architecture was developed for a 4-year ESA project. Together with two industrial partners, we are developing a prototype to then undergo radiation testing.

Gap-like structures in protoplanetary disks are likely related to planet formation processes. In this paper, we present and analyze high resolution (0.17*0.11 arcsec) 1.3 mm ALMA continuum observations of the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Ae star MWC 480. Our observations for the first time show a gap centered at ~74au with a width of ~23au, surrounded by a bright ring centered at ~98au from the central star. Detailed radiative transfer modeling of both the ALMA image and the broadband spectral energy distribution is used to constrain the surface density profile and structural parameters of the disk. If the width of the gap corresponds to 4~8 times the Hill radius of a single forming planet, then the putative planet would have a mass of 0.4~3 M_Jup. We test this prediction by performing global three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamic gas/dust simulations of disks hosting a migrating and accreting planet. We find that the dust emission across the disk is consistent with the presence of an embedded planet with a mass of ~2.3 M_Jup at an orbital radius of ~78au. Given the surface density of the best-fit radiative transfer model, the amount of depleted mass in the gap is higher than the mass of the putative planet, which satisfies the basic condition for the formation of such a planet., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 11 pages, 8 figures

Rings are the most frequently revealed substructure in ALMA dust observations of protoplanetary disks, but their origin is still hotly debated. In this paper, we identify dust substructures in 12 disks and measure their properties to investigate how they form. This subsample of disks is selected from a high-resolution ($\sim0.12''$) ALMA 1.33 mm survey of 32 disks in the Taurus star-forming region, which was designed to cover a wide range of sub-mm brightness and to be unbiased to previously known substructures. While axisymmetric rings and gaps are common within our sample, spiral patterns and high contrast azimuthal asymmetries are not detected. Fits of disk models to the visibilities lead to estimates of the location and shape of gaps and rings, the flux in each disk component, and the size of the disk. The dust substructures occur across a wide range of stellar mass and disk brightness. Disks with multiple rings tend to be more massive and more extended. The correlation between gap locations and widths, the intensity contrast between rings and gaps, and the separations of rings and gaps could all be explained if most gaps are opened by low-mass planets (super-Earths and Neptunes) in the condition of low disk turbulence ($\alpha=10^{-4}$). The gap locations are not well correlated with the expected locations of CO and N$_2$ ice lines, so condensation fronts are unlikely to be a universal mechanism to create gaps and rings, though they may play a role in some cases., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, ApJ accepted

We report the detection of methanol in the disk around the young outbursting star V883 Ori with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Four transitions are observed with upper level energies ranging between 115 and 459 K. The emission is spatially resolved with the 0.14" beam and follows the Keplerian rotation previously observed for C$^{18}$O. Using a rotational diagram analysis, we find a disk-averaged column density of $\sim10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$ and a rotational temperature of $\sim90-100$ K, suggesting that the methanol has thermally desorbed from the dust grains. We derive outer radii between 120 and 140 AU for the different transitions, compared to the 360 AU outer radius for C$^{18}$O. Depending on the exact physical structure of the disk, the methanol emission could originate in the surface layers beyond the water snowline. Alternatively, the bulk of the methanol emission originates inside the water snowline, which can then be as far out as ~100 AU, instead of 42 AU as was previously inferred from the continuum opacity. In addition, these results show that outbursting young stars like V883 Ori are good sources to study the ice composition of planet forming material through thermally desorbed complex molecules, which have proven to be hard to observe in more evolved protoplanetary disks., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. VLA 1623$-$2417 is a triple protostellar system deeply embedded in Ophiuchus A. Sources A and B have a separation of 1.1", making their study difficult beyond the submillimeter regime. Lack of circumstellar gas emission suggested that VLA 1623$-$2417 B has a very cold envelope and is much younger than source A, generally considered the prototypical Class 0 source. We explore the consequences of new ALMA Band 9 data on the spectral energy distribution (SED) of VLA 1623$-$2417 and their inferred nature. Using dust continuum observations spanning from centimeter to near-infrared wavelengths, the SED of each component in VLA 1623$-$2417 is constructed and analysed. The ALMA Band 9 data presented here show that the SED of VLA 1623$-$2417 B does not peak at 850 $\mu$m as previously expected, but instead presents the same shape as VLA 1623$-$2417 A at wavelengths shorter than 450 $\mu$m. The results presented here indicate that the previous assumption that the flux in $Herschel$ and Spitzer observations is solely dominated by VLA 1623$-$2417 A is not valid, and instead, VLA 1623$-$2417 B most likely contributes a significant fraction of the flux at $\lambda~<$ 450 $\mu$m. The growth of dust grains in protoplanetary disks is a necessary first step towards planet formation. This growth has been inferred via observations of thermal dust emission towards mature protoplanetary systems (age >2 million years) with masses that are, on average, similar to Neptune3. In contrast, the majority of confirmed exoplanets are heavier than Neptune. Given that young protoplanetary disks are more massive than their mature counterparts, this suggests that planet formation starts early, but evidence for grain growth that is spatially and temporally coincident with a massive reservoir in young disks remains scarce. Here, we report observations on a lack of emission of carbon monoxide isotopologues within the inner ~15 au of a very young (age ~100,000 years) disk around the Solar-type protostar TMC1A. By using the absence of spatially resolved molecular line emission to infer the gas and dust content of the disk, we conclude that shielding by millimeter-size grains is responsible for the lack of emission. This suggests that grain growth and millimeter-size dust grains can be spatially and temporally coincident with a mass reservoir sufficient for giant planet formation. Recent measurements carried out at comet 67P/C-G with the ${\it Rosetta}$ probe revealed that molecular oxygen, O$_2$, is the fourth most abundant molecule in comets. Models show that O$_2$ is likely of primordial nature, coming from the interstellar cloud from which our Solar System was formed. However, gaseous O$_2$ is an elusive molecule in the interstellar medium with only one detection towards quiescent molecular clouds, in the $\rho$ Oph A core. We perform a deep search for molecular oxygen, through the $2_1 - 0_1$ rotational transition at 234 GHz of its $^{16}$O$^{18}$O isotopologue, towards the warm compact gas surrounding the nearby Class 0 protostar IRAS 16293--2422 B with the ALMA interferometer. The targeted $^{16}$O$^{18}$O transition is surrounded by two brighter transitions at $\pm 1$ km s$^{-1}$ relative to the expected $^{16}$O$^{18}$O transition frequency. After subtraction of these two transitions, residual emission at a 3$\sigma$ level remains, but with a velocity offset of $0.3 - 0.5$ km s$^{-1}$ relative to the source velocity, rendering the detection "tentative". We derive the O$_2$ column density for two excitation temperatures $T_{\rm ex}$ of 125 and 300 K, as indicated by other molecules, in order to compare the O$_2$ abundance between IRAS16293 and comet 67P/C-G. Assuming that $^{16}$O$^{18}$O is not detected and using methanol CH$_3$OH as a reference species, we obtain a [O$_2$]/[CH$_3$OH] abundance ratio lower than $2-5$, depending on the assumed $T_{\rm ex}$, a three to four times lower abundance than the [O$_2$]/[CH$_3$OH] ratio of $5-15$ found in comet 67P/C-G. Such a low O$_2$ abundance could be explained by the lower temperature of the dense cloud precursor of IRAS16293 with respect to the one at the origin of our Solar System that prevented an efficient formation of O$_2$ in interstellar ices., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Much attention has been placed on the dust distribution in protostellar envelopes, but there are still many unanswered questions regarding the structure of the gas. We aim to start identifying the factors that determine the chemical structure of protostellar regions, by studying and comparing low-mass embedded systems in key molecular tracers. The cold and warm chemical structures of two embedded Class 0 systems, IRAS16293 and VLA1623 are characterized through interferometric observations. DCO+, N2H+ and N2D+ are used to trace the spatial distribution and physics of the cold regions of the envelope, while c-C3H2 and C2H from models of the chemistry are expected to trace the warm (UV-irradiated) regions. Both sources show a number of striking similarities and differences. DCO+ consistently traces the cold material at the disk-envelope interface, where gas and dust temperatures are lowered due to disk shadowing. N2H+ and N2D+, also tracing cold gas, show low abundances towards VLA1623, but for IRAS16293, the distribution of N2D+ is consistent with the same chemical models that reproduce DCO+. c-C3H2 and C2H show different spatial distributions for the two systems. For IRAS16293, c-C3H2 traces the outflow cavity wall, while C2H is found in the envelope material but not the outflow cavity wall. In contrast, toward VLA1623 both molecules trace the outflow cavity wall. Finally, hot core molecules are abundantly observed toward IRAS16293 but not toward VLA1623. We identify temperature as one of the key factors in determining the chemical structure of protostars as seen in gaseous molecules. More luminous protostars, such as IRAS16293, will have chemical complexity out to larger distances than colder protostars, such as VLA1623. [Abridged] Protoplanetary disks have been studied extensively, both physically and chemically, to understand the environment in which planets form. However, the first steps of planet formation are likely to occur already when the protostar and disk are still embedded in their natal envelope. The initial conditions for planet formation may thus be provided by these young embedded disks, of which the physical and chemical structure is poorly characterized. We aim to constrain the midplane temperature structure, one of the critical unknowns, of the embedded disk around L1527. In particular, we set out to determine whether there is an extended cold outer region where CO is frozen out, as is the case for Class II disks. We use archival ALMA data to directly observe the midplane of the near edge-on L1527 disk. Optically thick $^{13}$CO ($J=2-1$) and C$^{18}$O ($J=2-1$) emission is observed throughout the disk and inner envelope, while N$_2$D$^+ (J=3-2$), which can only be abundant when CO is frozen out, is not detected. Both CO isotopologues have brightness temperatures $\gtrsim$ 25 K along the midplane. Disk and envelope emission can be disentangled kinematically, because the largest velocities are reached in the disk. A power law radial temperature profile constructed using the highest midplane temperature at these velocities suggest that the temperature is above 20 K out to at least 75 AU, and possibly throughout the entire 125 AU disk. Radiative transfer models show that a model without CO freeze-out in the disk matches the C$^{18}$O observations better than a model with the CO snowline at $\sim$70 AU. In addition, there is no evidence for a large (order of magnitude) depletion of CO. Snowlines are key ingredients for planet formation. Providing observational constraints on the locations of the major snowlines is therefore crucial for fully connecting planet compositions to their formation mechanism. Unfortunately, the most important snowline, that of water, is very difficult to observe directly in protoplanetary disks due to its close proximity to the central star. Based on chemical considerations, HCO$^+$ is predicted to be a good chemical tracer of the water snowline, because it is particularly abundant in dense clouds when water is frozen out. This work maps the optically thin isotopologue H$^{13}$CO$^+$ ($J=3-2$) toward the envelope of the low-mass protostar NGC1333-IRAS2A (observed with NOEMA at ~0.9" resolution), where the snowline is at larger distance from the star than in disks. The H$^{13}$CO$^+$ emission peaks ~2" northeast of the continuum peak, whereas the previously observed H$_2^{18}$O shows compact emission on source. Quantitative modeling shows that a decrease in H$^{13}$CO$^+$ abundance by at least a factor of six is needed in the inner ~360 AU to reproduce the observed emission profile. Chemical modeling predicts indeed a steep increase in HCO$^+$ just outside the water snowline; the 50% decrease in gaseous H$_2$O at the snowline is not enough to allow HCO$^+$ to be abundant. This places the water snowline at 225 AU, further away from the star than expected based on the 1D envelope temperature structure for NGC1333-IRAS2A. In contrast, DCO$^+$ observations show that the CO snowline is at the expected location, making an outburst scenario unlikely. The spatial anticorrelation of the H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and H$_2^{18}$O emission provide a proof of concept that H$^{13}$CO$^+$ can be used as a tracer of the water snowline., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Planets form in disks around young stars. The planet formation process may start when the protostar and disk are still deeply embedded within their infalling envelope. However, unlike more evolved protoplanetary disks, the physical and chemical structure of these young embedded disks are still poorly constrained. We have analyzed ALMA data for $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O and N$_2$D$^+$ to constrain the temperature structure, one of the critical unknowns, in the disk around L1527. Young stars are associated with prominent outflows of molecular gas. The ejection of gas via these outflows is believed to remove angular momentum from the protostellar system, thus permitting young stars to grow by accretion of material from the protostellar disk. The underlying mechanism for outflow ejection is not yet understood, but is believed to be closely linked to the protostellar disk. Assorted scenarios have been proposed to explain protostellar outflows; the main difference between these models is the region where acceleration of material takes place: close to the protostar itself ('X-wind', or stellar wind), in a larger region throughout the protostellar disk (disk wind), or at the interface between. Because of the limits of observational studies, outflow launching regions have so far only been probed by indirect extrapolation. Here we report observations of carbon monoxide toward the outflow associated with the TMC1A protostellar system. These data show that gas is ejected from a region extending up to a radial distance of 25 astronomical units from the central protostar, and that angular momentum is removed from an extended region of the disk. This demonstrates that the outflowing gas is launched by an extended disk wind from a Keplerian disk. Solving the mystery of the origin of chondrules is one of the most elusive goals in the field of meteoritics. Recently the idea of planet(esimal) collisions releasing splashes of lava droplets, long considered out of favor, has been reconsidered as a possible origin of chondrules by several papers. One of the main problems with this idea is the lack of quantitative and simple models that can be used to test this scenario by directly comparing to the many known observables of chondrules. In Paper I of this series we presented a simple thermal evolution model of a spherically symmetric expanding cloud of molten lava droplets that is assumed to emerge from a collision between two planetesimals. In the present paper, number II of this series, we use this model to calculate whether or not volatile elements such as Na and K will remain abundant in these droplets or whether they will get depleted due to evaporation. The high density of the droplet cloud (e.g. small distance between adjacent droplets) causes the vapor to quickly reach saturation pressure and thus shutting down further evaporation. We show to which extent, and under which conditions, this keeps the abundances of these elements high, as is seen in chondrules. We find that for most parameters of our model (cloud mass, expansion velocity, initial temperature) the volatile elements Mg, Si and Fe remain entirely in the chondrules. The Na and K abundances inside the droplets will initially stay mostly at their initial values due to the saturation of the vapor pressure, but at some point start to drop due to the cloud expansion. However, as soon as the temperature starts to decrease, most or all of the vapor recondenses again. At the end the Na and K elements retain most of their initial abundances, albeit occasionally somewhat reduced, depending on the parameters of the expanding cloud model., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Low-mass protostars are the extrasolar analogues of the natal Solar System. Sophisticated physicochemical models are used to simulate the formation of two protoplanetary discs from the initial prestellar phase, one dominated by viscous spreading and the other by pure infall. The results show that the volatile prestellar fingerprint is modified by the chemistry en route into the disc. This holds relatively independent of initial abundances and chemical parameters: physical conditions are more important. The amount of CO2 increases via the grain-surface reaction of OH with CO, which is enhanced by photodissociation of H2O ice. Complex organic molecules are produced during transport through the envelope at the expense of CH3OH ice. Their abundances can be comparable to that of methanol ice (few % of water ice) at large disc radii (R > 30 AU). Current Class II disc models may be underestimating the complex organic content. Planet population synthesis models may underestimate the amount of CO2 and overestimate CH3OH ices in planetesimals by disregarding chemical processing between the cloud and disc phases. The overall C/O and C/N ratios differ between the gas and solid phases. The two ice ratios show little variation beyond the inner 10 AU and both are nearly solar in the case of pure infall, but both are sub-solar when viscous spreading dominates. Chemistry in the protostellar envelope en route to the protoplanetary disc sets the initial volatile and prebiotically-significant content of icy planetesimals and cometary bodies. (Abridged*) Models of the young solar nebula assume a hot initial disk with most volatiles are in the gas phase. The question remains whether an actively accreting disk is warm enough to have gas-phase water up to 50 AU radius. No detailed studies have yet been performed on the extent of snowlines in an embedded accreting disk (Stage 0). Quantify the location of gas-phase volatiles in embedded actively accreting disk system. Two-dimensional physical and radiative transfer models have been used to calculate the temperature structure of embedded protostellar systems. Gas and ice abundances of H$_2$O, CO$_2$, and CO are calculated using the density-dependent thermal desorption formulation. The midplane water snowline increases from 3 to 55 AU for accretion rates through the disk onto the star between $10^{-9}$-$10^{-4} \ M_{\odot} \ {\rm yr^{-1}}$. CO$_2$ can remain in the solid phase within the disk for $\dot{M} \leq 10^{-5} \ M_{\odot} \ {\rm yr^{-1}}$ down to $\sim 20$ AU. Most of the CO is in the gas phase within an actively accreting disk independent of disk properties and accretion rate. The predicted optically thin water isotopolog emission is consistent with the detected H$_2^{18}$O emission toward the Stage 0 embedded young stellar objects, originating from both the disk and the warm inner envelope (hot core). An accreting embedded disk can only account for water emission arising from $R < 50$ AU, however, and the extent rapidly decreases for low accretion rates. Thus, the radial extent of the emission can be measured with ALMA observations and compared to this limit. Volatiles sublimate out to 50 AU in young disks and can reset the chemical content inherited from the envelope in periods of high accretion rates. Due to instrumental limitations and a lack of disk detections, the structure between the envelope and the rotationally supported disk has been poorly studied. This is now possible with ALMA through observations of CO isotopologs and tracers of freezeout. Class 0 sources are ideal for such studies given their almost intact envelope and young disk. The structure of the disk-envelope interface of the prototypical Class 0 source, VLA1623A which has a confirmed Keplerian disk, is constrained from ALMA observations of DCO+ 3-2 and C18O 2-1. The physical structure of VLA1623 is obtained from the large-scale SED and continuum radiative transfer. An analytic model using a simple network coupled with radial density and temperature profiles is used as input for a 2D line radiative transfer calculation for comparison with the ALMA Cycle 0 12m array and Cycle 2 ACA observations of VLA1623. DCO+ emission shows a clumpy structure bordering VLA1623A's Keplerian disk, suggesting a cold ring-like structure at the disk-envelope interface. The radial position of the observed DCO+ peak is reproduced in our model only if the region's temperature is between 11-16K, lower than expected from models constrained by continuum and SED. Altering the density has little effect on the DCO+ position, but increased density is needed to reproduce the disk traced in C18O. The DCO+ emission around VLA1623A is the product of shadowing of the envelope by the disk. Disk-shadowing causes a drop in the gas temperature outside of the disk on >200AU scales, encouraging deuterated molecule production. This indicates that the physical structure of the disk-envelope interface differs from the rest of the envelope, highlighting the drastic impact that the disk has on the envelope and temperature structure. Complex organic molecules are ubiquitous companions of young low-mass protostars. Recent observations suggest that their emission stems, not only from the traditional hot corino, but also from offset positions. In this work, 2D physicochemical modelling of an envelope-cavity system is carried out. Wavelength-dependent radiative transfer calculations are performed and a comprehensive gas-grain chemical network is used to simulate the physical and chemical structure. The morphology of the system delineates three distinct regions: the cavity wall layer with time-dependent and species-variant enhancements; a torus rich in complex organic ices, but not reflected in gas-phase abundances; and the remaining outer envelope abundant in simpler solid and gaseous molecules. Strongly irradiated regions, such as the cavity wall layer, are subject to frequent photodissociation in the solid phase. Subsequent recombination of the photoproducts leads to frequent reactive desorption, causing gas-phase enhancements of several orders of magnitude. This mechanism remains to be quantified with laboratory experiments. Direct photodesorption is found to be relatively inefficient. If radicals are not produced directly in the icy mantle, the formation of complex organics is impeded. For efficiency, a sufficient number of FUV photons needs to penetrate the envelope; and elevated cool dust temperatures need to enable grain-surface radical mobility. As a result, a high stellar luminosity and a sufficiently wide cavity favor chemical complexity. Furthermore within this paradigm, complex organics are demonstrated to have unique lifetimes and be grouped into early (formaldehyde, ketene, methanol, formic acid, methyl formate, acetic acid, glycolaldehyde) and late (acetaldehyde, dimethyl ether, ethanol) species., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 24 pages, 20 figures, 3 tables

Abridged: Recent simulations have explored different ways to form accretion disks around low-mass stars. We aim to present observables to differentiate a rotationally supported disk from an infalling rotating envelope toward deeply embedded young stellar objects and infer their masses and sizes. Two 3D magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) formation simulations and 2D semi-analytical model are studied. The dust temperature structure is determined through continuum radiative transfer RADMC3D modelling. A simple temperature dependent CO abundance structure is adopted and synthetic spectrally resolved submm rotational molecular lines up to $J_{\rm u} = 10$ are simulated. All models predict similar compact components in continuum if observed at the spatial resolutions of 0.5-1$"$ (70-140 AU) typical of the observations to date. A spatial resolution of $\sim$14 AU and high dynamic range ($> 1000$) are required to differentiate between RSD and pseudo-disk in the continuum. The peak-position velocity diagrams indicate that the pseudo-disk shows a flatter velocity profile with radius than an RSD. On larger-scales, the CO isotopolog single-dish line profiles are similar and are narrower than the observed line widths of low-$J$ lines, indicating significant turbulence in the large-scale envelopes. However a forming RSD can provide the observed line widths of high-$J$ lines. Thus, either RSDs are common or a higher level of turbulence ($b \sim 0.8 \ {\rm km \ s^{-1}}$ ) is required in the inner envelope compared with the outer part. Multiple spatially and spectrally resolved molecular line observations are needed. The continuum data give a better estimate on disk masses whereas the disk sizes can be estimated from the spatially resolved molecular lines observations. (Abridged) Organic molecules are important constituents of protoplanetary disks. Their ro-vibrational lines observed in the near- and mid-infrared are commonly detected toward T Tauri disks. These lines are the only way to probe the chemistry in the inner few au where terrestrial planets form. To understand this chemistry, accurate molecular abundances have to be determined. This is complicated by excitation effects. Most analyses so far have made the assumption of local thermal equilibrium (LTE). Starting from estimates for the collisional rate coefficients of HCN, non-LTE slab models of the HCN emission were calculated to study the importance of different excitation mechanisms. Using a new radiative transfer model, the HCN emission from a full two-dimensional disk was then modeled to study the effect of the non-LTE excitation, together with the line formation. We ran models tailored to the T Tauri disk AS 205 (N) where HCN lines in both the 3 {\mu}m and 14 {\mu}m bands have been observed by VLT-CRIRES and the Spitzer Space Telescope. Reproducing the observed 3 {\mu}m / 14 {\mu}m flux ratios requires very high densities and kinetic temperatures ($n > 10^{14}$ cm$^{-3}$ and $T > 750$ K), if only collisional excitation is accounted for. Radiative pumping can, however, excite the lines easily out to considerable radii $\sim$ 10 au. Consequently, abundances derived from LTE and non-LTE models do not differ by more than a factor of about 3. Models with both a strongly enhanced abundance within $\sim$ 1 au (jump abundance) and constant abundance can reproduce the current observations, but future observations with the MIRI instrument on JWST and METIS on the E-ELT can easily distinguish between the scenarios and test chemical models. Interstellar methanol is considered to be a parent species of larger, more complex organic molecules. A physicochemical simulation of infalling parcels of matter is performed for a low-mass star-forming system to trace the chemical evolution from cloud to disc. An axisymmetric 2D semi-analytic model generates the time-dependent density and velocity distributions, and full continuum radiative transfer is performed to calculate the dust temperature and the UV radiation field at each position as a function of time. A comprehensive gas-grain chemical network is employed to compute the chemical abundances along infall trajectories. Two physical scenarios are studied, one in which the dominant disc growth mechanism is viscous spreading, and another in which continuous infall of matter prevails. The results show that the infall path influences the abundance of methanol entering each type of disc, ranging from complete loss of methanol to an enhancement by a factor of > 1 relative to the prestellar phase. Critical chemical processes and parameters for the methanol chemistry under different physical conditions are identified. The exact abundance and distribution of methanol is important for the budget of complex organic molecules in discs, which will be incorporated into forming planetary system objects such as protoplanets and comets. These simulations show that the comet-forming zone contains less methanol than in the precollapse phase, which is dominantly of prestellar origin, but also with additional layers built up in the envelope during infall. HD 100546 is a well-studied Herbig Be star-disk system that likely hosts a close-in companion with compelling observational evidence for an embedded protoplanet at 68 AU. We present ALMA observations of the HD 100546 disk which resolve the gas and dust structure at (sub)mm wavelengths. The CO emission (at 345.795 GHz) originates from an extensive molecular disk (390+/-20 AU in radius) whereas the continuum emission is more compact (230+/-20 AU in radius) suggesting radial drift of the mm-sized grains. The CO emission is similar in extent to scattered light images indicating well-mixed gas and um-sized grains in the disk atmosphere. Assuming azimuthal symmetry, a single-component power-law model cannot reproduce the continuum visibilities. The visibilities and images are better reproduced by a double-component model: a compact ring with a width of 21 AU centered at 26 AU and an outer ring with a width of 75+/-3 AU centered at 190+/-3 AU. The influence of a companion and protoplanet on the dust evolution is investigated. The companion at 10 AU facilitates the accumulation of mm-sized grains within a compact ring, ~ 20 - 30 AU, by ~ 10 Myr. The injection of a protoplanet at 1 Myr hastens the ring formation (~ 1.2 Myr) and also triggers the development of an outer ring (~ 100 - 200 AU). These observations provide additional evidence for the presence of a close-in companion and hint at dynamical clearing by a protoplanet in the outer disk., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

Context: The R CrA cloud hosts a handful of Class 0/I low-mass young stellar objects. The chemistry and physics at scales $>500$ AU in this cloud are dominated by the irradiation from the nearby Herbig Be star R CrA. The luminous large-scale emission makes it necessary to use high-resolution spectral imaging to study the chemistry and dynamics of the inner envelopes and discs of the protostars. Aims: We aim to better understand the structure of the inner regions of these protostars and, in particular, the interplay between the chemistry and the presence of discs. Methods: Using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) high-resolution spectral imaging interferometry observations, we study the molecular line and dust continuum emission at submillimetre wavelengths. Results: We detect dust continuum emission from four circumstellar discs around Class 0/I objects within the R CrA cloud. Towards IRS7B we detect C$^{17}$O emission showing a rotation curve consistent with a Keplerian disc with a well-defined edge that gives a good estimate for the disc radius at 50 AU. We derive the central object mass to $2.3M_{\odot}$ and the disc mass to $0.024M_{\odot}$. The observations are also consistent with a model of material infalling under conservation of angular momentum; however, this model provides a worse fit to the data. We also report a likely detection of faint CH$_3$OH emission towards this point source, as well as more luminous CH$_3$OH emission in an outflow orthogonal to the major axis of the C$^{17}$O emission. Conclusions: The faint CH$_3$OH emission seen towards IRS7B can be explained by a flat density profile of the inner envelope caused by the disc with a radius $\lesssim50$ AU. We propose that the regions of the envelopes where complex organic molecules are present in Class 0/I young stellar objects can become quenched as the disc grows., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 11 pages, 9 figures
