6. Accounting and billing challenges in large scale emerging cloud technologies

Abstract

Billing models which can easily adapt with emerging market opportunities is essential in long term survival of any business. Accounting and billing is also one of the few processes which has wide impact on legal and regulatory compliance, revenue lines as well as customer retention models of all businesses. In the era of rapid technology shifts, with emergence of Fog and Edge deployment models, and marriage of IoT and cloud which promises smart-everything everywhere, it is paramount to understand what new challenges must be addressed within any billing framework. In this paper we list several emerging challenges which should be overcome in architecting any future-ready billing platform. We also present briefly an analysis of few technologies which could be used in prototyping such a solution. We present our proof of concept experiment along with initial results highlighting the feasibility of our proposed architecture towards a scalable billing framework for massively distributed IoT applications at the edge.

Abstract

Virtualization offers several benefits for optimal resource utilization over traditional non-virtualized server farms. With improvements in internetworking technologies and increase in network bandwidth speeds, a new era of computing has been ushered in, that of grids and clouds. With several commercial cloud providers coming up, each with their own APIs, application description formats, and varying support for SLAs, vendor lock-in has become a serious issue for end users. This article attempts to describe the problem, issues, possible solutions and challenges in achieving cloud interoperability. These issues will be analyzed in the ambit of the European project Contrail that is trying to adopt open standards with available virtualization solutions to enhance users' trust in the clouds by attempting to prevent vendor lock-ins, supporting and enforcing SLAs together with adequate data protection for sensitive data.

Abstract

As systems get more complex testing has also increased not only in complexity but in the total IT cost, which is estimated to increase even more by 2020. Testing large complex distributed applications is hard, time consuming and lacks tooling. Given that the digitalisation of business has proved to be a key aspect for improving the productivity of developers in the delivery of the service to end-users, in this paper we present early results showing how these capabilities can also be provided to testers of software and services, by adopting standard interfaces and leveraging the tools provided by an early research open-source platform, capable of efficiently testing large scale systems, ElasTest.

Abstract

Content Distribution Networks are mandatory components of modern web architectures, with plenty of vendors offering their services. Despite its maturity, new paradigms and architecture models are still being developed in this area. Cloud Computing, on the other hand, is a more recent concept which has expanded extremely quickly, with new services being regularly added to cloud management software suites such as OpenStack. The main contribution of this paper is the architecture and the development of an open source CDN that can be provisioned in an on-demand, pay-as-you-go model thereby enabling the CDN as a Service paradigm. We describe our experience with integration of CDNaaS framework in a cloud environment, as a service for enterprise users. We emphasize the flexibility and elasticity of such a model, with each CDN instance being delivered on-demand and associated to personalized caching policies as well as an optimized choice of Points of Presence based on exact requirements of an enterprise customer. Our development is based on the framework developed in the Mobile Cloud Networking (MCN) EU FP7 project, which offers its enterprise users a common framework to instantiate and control services. CDNaaS is one of the core support components in this project as is tasked to deliver different type of multimedia content to several thousands of users geographically distributed. It integrates seamlessly in the MCN service life-cycle and as such enjoys all benefits of a common design environment, allowing for an improved interoperability with the rest of the services within the MCN ecosystem.

22. Real-time streaming in the cloud can increase the provider's profit and the P2P users' benefit

Abstract

This paper proposes a methodology to establish a billing model in a streaming service that can achieve high provider's profit and increased users' welfare. We relate three types of the service's topology: P2P (multicast), P2P-Cloud (hybrid) and Cloud (unicast) to different user profiles and analyze their effect on the provider's cost and profit. The evaluation shows that increased user cooperation, significantly decreases the provider's cloud infrastructure cost and make his profit highest when 50%-100% of the users cooperate. More cooperation increases the overall users' welfare in terms of monetary remuneration.

In the present days of rapid adoption of cloud services and varying cost models it is imperative to have a system which converts the cloud resource usage data into a measurable and payable cost. The system should be able to collect the cloud resource usage data, process it against a dynamically determined rate to get a charge for which the customer could be billed upon. These operations need to be done in a secured manner with appropriate authentication and authorization checks. As the cloud services are still evolving, the rating, charging and billing components for cloud are at a nascent stage of its maturity. In this paper we are describing a novel modular and micro services based design & architecture for developing a dynamic rating, charging and billing for cloud service providers with emphasis being given to the validation of the architecture through mathematical modeling and the implementation experience of the micro services.

Abstract

The fast growing development of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) trends and the remarkable progress of Software Defined Networking (SDN) have yielded a synergy between both, towards the provision of convergent networking solutions. Since the traditional networking principles were not designed according to the NFV principles, a work has emerged dedicated to protocol redesign among the academic fellows and the industry representatives. A typical example that has been introduced in such eco-system is the concept of network service chaining, as a composition of virtual network functions stitched together in a logically ordered fashion, to create an integral networking service that can be owned by network administrators, programmers, cloud- and telco-operators. This appoints SDN as an essential technology enabler in administering advanced traffic steering techniques, thanks to the SDN controller's capability to dynamically manage VNFs virtual connections and underlying dataplane flows. Despite the rapid progression, the strategies for traffic steering in NFV environment, are still facing imminent challenges to be addressed. This paper joins NFV and SDN technology into a novel traffic steering solution based on open source reference implementations (such as SDK for SDN, virtual Traffic Classifier, virtual Media Transcoder, and WAN Infrastructure Connection Manager) designed with performance and network optimizations in mind. We have successfully deployed and tested the system prototype in a real datacenter. The evaluation results of the prototype system: (1) validated the presented chain use cases, (2) affirmed an efficient performance and scalability of the chaining method, and (3) certified good quality of video traffic transmission and transcoding.

The objective of this paper is to illustrate how to monetize infrastructures and services. This is achieved by a combination of measuring consumption, applying pricing strategies and client invoicing. Furthermore, a range of billing solutions are available in order to cover the Rating, Charging and Billing process. The focus here is on the comparison of solution based suitability, which depends on complexity of records and volume of transactions. RCB Cyclops, as an open source solution, is presented and evaluated in terms of data throughputs focusing on doubling host machines and yielding 70-80% boost in performance.

Abstract

P2P streaming today is one of the most challenging techniques to deliver real-time streaming on the Internet. Incentive mechanisms make a crucial part of the P2P algorithms in order to avoid uncooperative and eliminate malicious behavior. In this paper we present a monetary incentive mechanism based on the taxation incentive schemes. We use a model of a P2P streaming service to apply the idea and validate the quantitative effect on both the users' and the provider's welfare in the system. A billing model based on QoS levels for the perceived video that offers a remuneration inventive for the cooperative users, contributes to the P2P streaming because of the two main reasons: increases provider's welfare in terms of monetary benefit and saves infrastructure cost; increases users' welfare in terms of increased cooperation and motivation to participate in the streaming.

Abstract

Meeting citizens’ requirements economically and efficiently is the most important objective of Smart Cities. As a matter of fact, they are considered a key concept both for future Internet and information and communications technology. It is expected that a wide range of services will be made available for residential users (e.g. intelligent transportation systems, e‐government, e‐banking, e‐commerce and smart management of energy demand), public administration entities, public safety and civil protection agencies and so on with increased quality, lower costs and reduced environmental impact. In order to achieve these ambitious objectives, new technologies should be developed such as non‐invasive sensing, highly parallel processing, smart grids and mobile broadband communications. This paper considers the communication aspects of Smart City applications, specifically, the role of the latest developments of Long‐Term Evolution‐Advanced standard, which forecast the increase of broadband coverage by means of small cells. We shall demonstrate that the novel concept of small cell fully meets the emerging communication and networking requirements of future Smart Cities. To this aim, a feasible network architecture for future Smart Cities, based on small cells, will be discussed in the framework of a future smarter and user‐centric perspective of forthcoming 4G mobile technologies.

Abstract

Rating, Charging, Billing (RCB) is the fundamental activity that enables a business to generate revenue stream depending on the resource consumption by their consumers. Traditionally, telecom operators have used custom designed, vertically integrated solution for RCB which often results in a complex system that is difficult to adapt to new service offerings. With telecom operator’s desire to capitalize on cloud computing by using their vast amount of infrastructure, the need for a RCB solution that serves the needs of cloudified telcos is needed. In this paper we present an approach to implement a generic rating, charging, and billing engine that serves the business and technical needs of both cloudified telecom services and those of cloud service providers. Key to this is a generic accounting process to drive the design of the generic RCB architecture. We show how RCB as a service can be offered catering to not only traditional telco services, the new cloud services they wish and will offer, but packaged cloudified services to the consumers and application developers as well. Finally, we detail how our architecture can be distributed and key services replicated to ensure high-availability. The end result of this paper is a solution that can enable telecom service providers to leverage the rapidly growing and accelerating cloud service market.

Abstract

International audience; The move of users and organizations to Cloud computing will become possible when they will be able to exploit their own applications, applications and services provided by cloud providers as well as applications from third party providers in a trustful way on different cloud infrastructures. To reach this goal, standard application formats must be enabled on the cloud to avoid vendor-lockin, and guarantees concerning protection, performance and security supported. This article describes the Contrail VEP component developed by the Contrail project. The VEP component is in charge of managing the whole life cycle of OVF distributed applications under Service Level Agreement rules on different infrastructure providers.

Abstract

International audience; Cloud computing is rapidly defining the computing paradigm for the modern networked age. Users can run their large computations online using cloud services at a fraction of the cost compared to setting up their own data centers. Clearly, cloud computing offers many advantages, and yet many large organisations including governments, the financial sector, and the health care sector are reluctant in transitioning to cloud computing. The contrail project addresses the major concerns behind this reluctance, namely mistrust in cloud platforms, the lack of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Quality of Protection (QoP) of data. Contrail aims at providing a federation layer support for bringing a multitude of cloud providers, both private and public, together. This will allow multi-tenancy and cloud-bursting capability to end user cloud applications while supporting SLAs and QoP agreements desired by several privacy aware sectors including governments, banks, health care providers to name a few. This chapter describes the overall architecture of the Contrail framework; from the cloud federation services to the Contrail Virtual Execution Platform (VEP) that will be closely interfaced with the IaaS layer of cloud providers. VEP upgrades the supported cloud providers and brings trust in cloud computing by adding SLAs and QoP features missing at the typical IaaS layer. The federation services interact with the provider VEPs to provide transparent access to federation resources. Furthermore, this chapter outlines challenges faced in being part of a large federation and how VEP addresses some of those.

Abstract

International audience; Crowds provides probable innocence in the face of large number of attackers. In this paper, we present the experimental results of the behavior of Crowds in a dense network. We begin by providing a brief description about Crowds followed by the experimental environment in which the simulations were carried out. We then present the results of our simulations and the inferences made out of them. We will also show that the obtained results match the predictions made by others.
