15. Rail-wheel friction quantification and its variability under lab and field trial conditions.

Abstract

Friction forces (often referred to as adhesion or traction forces) at the wheel/rail interface can vary dramatically due to changing environmental and contact conditions. The causes of this variance are partially documented, but it is not fully understood. Friction forces affect wheel and rail wear, traction energy usage, vehicle dynamics and safety through braking performance. A range of different portable railhead tribometers are used in the field to measure friction, but until recently have been limited in their performance, being unable to measure low friction situations or have made use of an unrealistic contact geometry. Recent developments have improved this situation but there is currently a lack of published field data which is required for validation, benchmarking and comparison between other studies and test rigs, as well as for input to multi-body dynamics simulations of railway vehicles. Friction studies in general are often undertaken for a specific period of time or under closely controlled conditions which makes it difficult to understand the true range of conditions occurring in the wheel/rail contact. In this paper an extensive dataset of railhead measurements is presented, using two types of measuring devices and three railhead conditions throughout a 4-week test period. 23. Outreach within the Bristol ChemLabS CETL (Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning)

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the Bristol ChemLabS project. In particular, it describes the development and impacts of the outreach project within Bristol ChemLabS, the UK's Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in practical chemistry, and its continuation beyond the funded project. The major elements of working with both primary and secondary aged students, both within their schools and within the undergraduate teaching laboratories, are described together with aspects of the science teacher training. The teaching elements include school's conferences, workshops within the School of Chemistry as part of the Open Laboratory Programme, summer schools and overseas work. Evidence is provided that demonstrates the impact of this programme on enhancing positive attitudes toward science and further education for the school students, as well as providing enhancing and embedding learning opportunities for school students and their teachers. The very positive impacts on the postgraduate chemistry students that work alongside the School Teacher Fellow (STF), a secondary school teacher working within the School of Chemistry, is discussed and the vital role played by these postgraduates and the STF to the overall success of the Outreach Programme. Generating a sustainable (financially and in terms of personnel) Outreach programme of the size of Bristol ChemLabS (beyond the lifetime of the CETL programme) is a unique aspect amongst UK CETLs and the mechanism used to achieve this is also discussed.

Abstract

An overall policy agenda about vocational education and training in Europe and its links with general education and lifelong learning has been developed to bring together other policy agendas to serve one strategic goal. Education and training are key, with a number of benchmarks set to adapt education and provide better quality of employment. Targets were set for 2010 employment rates and analysis was performed on the labor market, showing a link between level of education and job prospects. To achieve the goals, European Union (EU) member states must encourage young people to stay in education, create equal opportunities for access to education and training, reduce early retirement, and integrate disadvantaged groups into the workforce. Reduction in skills gaps is a goal to meet employment targets as jobs shift away from physical to intellectual labor. Reform of vocational education and training has begun with EU member states being at various stages of reform. Reform needs to be speeded up, participation of key sectors of the workforce in education and training needs to be encouraged, and potential labor shortages in low skill jobs should be monitored. 40. Optimal intermittent electrification and its effect on battery sizing and energy saving using a high-fidelity train model.

Abstract

The fastest way to decarbonise traction energy of a railway network is full electrification of the network. However, full electrification can be costly and is often delayed due to complicated planning procedures. Often, it is not financially viable to electrify certain sections of the network due to geographical challenges such as hillsides and requirements to raise or lower the tracks. Intermittent electrification can provide a way to reduce emissions on a route without fully electrifying it. This paper presents an optimal intermittent electrification strategy and compares its effects on required battery size to a 'common-sense' approach. The "common-sense" approach is a heuristic electrification method where high-power sections of the route are electrified first. Energy savings are demonstrated using a validated high-fidelity bi-mode train model on the Newbury-Plymouth route of Great Western Railway in the UK. Unlike prior research, the optimal electrification strategy considers energy consumptions for both directions of a journey on the route and is therefore optimal regardless of travel direction. The 278-km Newbury-Plymouth route was divided into 50 equal discrete sections for the optimization process, which then identified sections that should be prioritised for electrification as they consume the maximum energy. A high charge/discharge lithium titanite-oxide battery was modelled and installed on the virtual vehicle to determine the required battery sizing for given optimal percentages of intermittent electrification. The battery sizing strategy includes battery wear effects from charge/discharge cycle life and shows the battery life to be 1.42 years if kept at 55°C and 6 years if kept at 25°C. At 36% electrification, using the 'common-sense' approach, the battery weighs 10,500 kg and the battery-OLE train reduces the CO2 emissions and energy usage on the route by 83% when compared to the diesel-only train. Abstract

The way young people engage with and make sense of digital/social media is not quite what it seems. In this paper we present two quite different versions, drawing on the work of political scientist James C. Scott. On the one hand, there is the 'public' or official transcript or rendition, which comprises the way adults conceive of this usage, and in which young people acquiesce with. On the other hand, in order to subvert the former, what is going on concurrently, is a hidden transcript which is opaque to outsiders and is revealed only to other young 'insiders'. Acquiescing with the former, in a sense, provides young people with the space in which to construct a much more resistant version of their usage of digital media.

Abstract

Australia is indicative of a country that is deeply confused and conflicted around a policy discourse of inclusion that is sutured within an existential context heavily committed to the tenets of neoliberalism. Nowhere is this more evident than in the case of higher education, in which the proportion of young people from backgrounds of "disadvantage" has remained implacably stuck at around 15% for several decades. The research from which this paper comes is an innovative community-based university-provided programme for young people for whom university education was never a realistic possibility--because of family histories, interruption to their lives, of having undertaken forms of secondary education that prevented them from gaining university entrance qualification, or who had terminated their education before completing the secondary years of schooling. This paper explores the story of one young person in his first year in a university programme, as he struggled with obstacles and impediments of a higher education system and set of neoliberal policy discourses that remain deeply sceptical and antagonistic to his trajectory.

Abstract

Background: It has been reported that hepatitis B virus (HBV) double mutations (A1762T, G1764A) are an aetiological factor of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, it is unclear who is prone to develop HCC, among those infected with the mutant. Exploring HBV quasispecies, which are strongly influenced by host immune pressure, may provide more information about the association of viral factors and HCC. Materials and methods: Nine HCC cases and 10 controls were selected from the Long An cohort. Serum samples were collected in 2004 and 2019 from subjects with HBV double mutations and the complete genome of HBV was amplified and sequenced using next-generation sequencing (NGS). Results: The Shannon entropy values increased from 2004 to 2019 in most cases and controls. There was no significant difference in mean intrahost quasispecies genetic distances between cases and controls. The change in the values of mean intrahost quasispecies genetic distances of the controls between 2004 and 2019 was significantly higher than that of the cases (P<0.05). The viral loads did not differ significantly between cases and controls in 2004(p=0.086) but differed at diagnosed in 2019 (p=0.009). Three mutations occurring with increasing frequency from 2004 to 2019 were identified in the HCC cases, including nt446 C→G, nt514 A→C and nt2857T→C. Their frequency differed significantly between the cases and controls (P<0.05). Conclusions: The change in the values of mean intrahost quasispecies genetic distances in HCC was smaller, suggesting that HBV in HCC cases may be subject to low host immune pressure. Increasing viral loads during long-term infection are associated with the development of HCC. The novel mutations may increase the risk for HCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
