In this work we perform the photometric analysis of the globular cluster system (GCS) of the giant elliptical NGC4696, which is the brightest member of Centaurus, a rich and dynamically young galaxy cluster. We obtained deep Magellan 6.5 m/MegaCam (g', r', i') photometry, with which we identified a sample of 3818 stellar clusters around NGC4696 that were analyzed in the context of possible interactions and its assembly history. After carefully modeling and subtracting the galaxy light, we used selection criteria based on the shape, colors, and magnitudes to identify GC candidates. We find a number of features that indicate a disturbed GCS that points toward a complex evolution with other neighboring members of Centaurus. Formally, two subpopulations could be found at (g'-i')_0 = 0.763 $\pm$ 0.004 and (g'-i')_0=1.012 $\pm$ 0.004. Moreover, the color distribution does not show the presence of a significant blue tilt, but it presents a trend with the radius, where at small galactocentric distances a unimodal distribution is preferable to a bimodal one, suggesting the presence of an intermediate GC population. Besides the color distribution, the metallicity distribution also shows a bimodal trend, with peaks at [Fe/H]=-1.363 $\pm$ 0.010 and [Fe/H]=-0.488 $\pm$ 0.012. The radial density profiles show different slopes for the blue and red populations and the azimuthal distributions are well fitted by an asymmetrical sinusoidal function, with peaks projecting toward two nearby galaxies, NGC4696B and NGC4709, indicating past interactions among these three galaxies. Finally, we derived a GC specific frequency of S_N=6.8 $\pm$ 0.9, in good agreement with the values obtained for other giant ellipticals and with previously estimated S_N of NGC4696. The extended stellar halos of galaxies contain important clues for investigating their assembly history and evolution. We investigate the resolved stellar content and the extended halo of NGC 5128 as a function of galactocentric distance. We used HST images to resolve individual red giant branch (RGB) stars in 28 independent pointings. Star counts from deep VI color-magnitude diagrams reaching at least 1.5 mag below the tip of the RGB are used to derive the surface density distribution of the halo. The contamination by Milky Way stars is assessed with a new control field, with models, and by combining optical and near-IR photometry. We present a new calibration of the WFC3 F606W+F814W photometry to the ground-based VI photometric system. The photometry shows that the stellar halo of NGC 5128 is dominated by old RGB stars that are present in all fields. The V-band surface brightness changes from 23 to 32 mag/arcsec$^2$ between 8.3 kpc from the galaxy center to our outermost halo fields located 140 kpc away from the center along the major axis and 92 kpc along the minor axis. Within ~30 kpc, we also find evidence for a 2-3 Gyr old population traced by bright asymptotic giant branch stars. This population contributes only up to 10% in total stellar mass if it is 2 Gyr old, but a larger fraction of 30-40% is required if its age is 3 Gyr. The stellar surface density profile is well fit by a r$^{1/4}$ curve or a power-law $\sim r^{-3.1}$ over the full radial range, with no obvious break in the slope, but with large field-to-field scatter. The ellipticity measured from integrated-light photometry in the inner parts, $e=(b/a)=0.77$, flattens to $e=0.54 \pm 0.02$ beyond 30 kpc. Considering the flattening of the outer halo, the projection of the elliptical isophote on the semimajor axis for our most distant field reaches nearly 30 effective radii. We present new deep photometry of the rich globular cluster (GC) systems around the Brightest Cluster Galaxies UGC 9799 (Abell 2052) and UGC 10143 (Abell 2147), obtained with the HST ACS and WFC3 cameras. For comparison, we also present new reductions of similar HST/ACS data for the Coma supergiants NGC 4874 and 4889. All four of these galaxies have huge cluster populations (to the radial limits of our data, comprising from 12000 to 23000 clusters per galaxy). The metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) of the GCs can still be matched by a bimodal-Gaussian form where the metal-rich and metal-poor modes are separated by ~0.8 dex, but the internal dispersions of each mode are so large that the total MDF becomes very broad and nearly continuous from [Fe/H] = -2.4 to Solar. There are, however, significant differences between galaxies in the relative numbers of \emph{metal-rich} clusters, suggesting that they underwent significantly different histories of mergers with massive, gas-rich halos. Lastly, the proportion of metal-poor GCs rises especially rapidly outside projected radii R > 4 R_eff, suggesting the importance of accreted dwarf satellites in the outer halo. Comprehensive models for the formation of GCs as part of the hierarchical formation of their parent galaxies will be needed to trace the systematic change in structure of the MDF with galaxy mass, from the distinctly bimodal form in smaller galaxies up to the broad continuum that we see in the very largest systems., Comment: In press for Astrophysical Journal

We have used the ACS and WFC3 cameras on board HST to resolve stars in the halo of the nearest giant elliptical (gE) galaxy NGC 5128 out to a projected distance of 140 kpc (25 effective radii, Reff) along the major axis and 90 kpc (16 Reff) along the minor axis. This dataset provides an unprecedented radial coverage of the stellar halo properties in any gE galaxy. Color-magnitude diagrams clearly reveal the presence of the red giant branch stars belonging to the halo of NGC 5128, even in our most distant fields. The star counts demonstrate increasing flattening of the outer halo, which is elongated along the major axis of the galaxy. The V-I colors of the red giants enable us to measure the metallicity distribution in each field and so map the gradient out to ~16 Reff from the galaxy center along the major axis. A median metallicity is obtained even for the outermost fields along both axes. We observe a smooth transition from a metal-rich ([M/H]~0.0) inner galaxy to lower metallicity in the outer halo, with the metallicity gradient slope along the major axis of $\Delta$[M/H]/$\Delta$ R=-0.0054 $\pm$ 0.0006 dex/kpc. In the outer halo, beyond ~10 Reff, the number density profile follows a power law, but also significant field-to-field metallicity and star count variations are detected. NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) is, at the distance of just 3.8 Mpc, the nearest easily observable giant elliptical galaxy. Therefore it is the best target to investigate the early star formation history of an elliptical galaxy. Our aims are to establish when the oldest stars formed in NGC 5128, and whether this galaxy formed stars over a long period. We compare simulated colour-magnitude diagrams with the deep ACS/HST photometry. We find that that the observed colour-magnitude diagram can be reproduced satisfactorily only by simulations that have the bulk of the stars with ages in excess of ~10 Gyr, and that the alpha-enhanced models fit the data much better than the solar scaled ones. Data are not consistent with extended star formation over more than 3-4 Gyr. Two burst models, with 70-80% of the stars formed 12+/-1 Gyr ago and with 20-30% younger contribution with 2-4 Gyr old stars provide the best agreement with the data. The old component spans the whole metallicity range of the models (Z=0.0001-0.04), while for the young component the best fitting models indicate higher minimum metallicity (~1/10 - 1/4 Z_sun). The bulk of the halo stars in NGC5128 must have formed at redshift z>=2 and the chemical enrichment was very fast, reaching solar or even twice-solar metallicity already for the ~11-12 Gyr old population. The minor young component, adding ~20-30% of the stars to the halo, and contributing less than 10% of the mass, may have resulted from a later star formation event ~2-4 Gyr ago. We present new photometry for 323 of the globular clusters in NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), measured for the first time in the $g'r'i'z'$ filter system. The color indices are calibrated directly to standard stars in the $g'r'i'z'$ system and are used to establish the fiducial mean colors for the blue and red (low and high metallicity) globular cluster sequences. We report the discovery of an extended globular cluster in a halo field in Centaurus A (NGC 5128), situated $\sim 38\kpc$ from the centre of that galaxy, imaged with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. At the distance of the galaxy, the half-light radius of the cluster is r_h ~ 17pc, placing it among the largest globular clusters known. The faint absolute magnitude of the star cluster, M_(V,o)=-5.2, and its large size render this object somewhat different from the population of extended globular clusters previously reported, making it the first firm detection in the outskirts of a giant galaxy of an analogue of the faint, diffuse globular clusters present in the outer halo of the Milky Way. The colour-magnitude diagram of the cluster, covering approximately the brightest four magnitudes of the red giant branch, is consistent with an ancient, i.e., older than ~8 Gyr, intermediate-metallicity, i.e., [M/H] ~-1.0 dex, stellar population. We also report the detection of a second, even fainter cluster candidate which would have r_h ~ 9pc, and M_(V,o)=-3.4 if it is at the distance of NGC 5128. The properties of the extended globular cluster and the diffuse stellar populations in its close vicinity suggest that they are part of a low mass accretion in the outer regions of NGC 5128., Comment: 9 pages, MNRAS, in press

Images from the HST ACS are used to carry out a new photometric study of the globular clusters (GCs) in M104, the Sombrero galaxy. The primary focus of our study is the characteristic distribution function of linear sizes (SDF) of the GCs. We measure the effective radii for 652 clusters with PSF-convolved King and Wilson dynamical model fits. The SDF is remarkably similar to those measured for other large galaxies of all types, adding strong support to the view that it is a "universal" feature of globular cluster systems. We develop a more general interpretation of the size distribution function for globular clusters, proposing that the shape of the SDF that we see today for GCs is strongly influenced by the early rapid mass loss during their star forming stage, coupled with stochastic differences from cluster to cluster in the star formation efficiency (SFE) and their initial sizes. We find that the observed SDF shape can be accurately predicted by a simple model in which the protocluster clouds had characteristic sizes of $0.9 \pm 0.1$ pc and SFEs of $0.3 \pm 0.07$. The colors and luminosities of the M104 clusters show the clearly defined classic bimodal form. The blue sequence exhibits a mass/metallicity relation (MMR), following a scaling of heavy-element abundance with luminosity of $Z \sim L^{0.3}$ very similar to what has been found in most giant elliptical galaxies. A quantitative self-enrichment model provides a good first-order match to the data for the same initial SFE and protocluster size that were required to explain the SDF. We also discuss various forms of the globular cluster Fundamental Plane (FP) of structural parameters, and show that useful tests of it can be extended to galaxies beyond the Local Group., Comment: In press for MNRAS

We study the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) in the nearby early-type galaxy Centaurus A, concentrating primarily on two aspects of binary populations: the XLF behavior at the low luminosity limit and comparison between globular cluster and field sources. The 800 ksec exposure of the deep Chandra VLP program allows us to reach a limiting luminosity of 8e35 erg/s, about 2-3 times deeper than previous investigations. We confirm the presence of the low luminosity break in the overall LMXB XLF at log(L_X)=37.2-37.6 below which the luminosity distribution follows a constant dN/d(ln L). Separating globular cluster and field sources, we find a statistically significant difference between the two luminosity distributions with a relative underabundance of faint sources in the globular cluster population. This demonstrates that the samples are drawn from distinct parent populations and may disprove the hypothesis that the entire LMXB population in early type galaxies is created dynamically in globular clusters. As a plausible explanation for this difference in the XLFs, we suggest that there is an enhanced fraction of helium accreting systems in globular clusters, which are created in collisions between red giants and neutron stars. Due to the 4 times higher ionization temperature of He, such systems are subject to accretion disk instabilities at approximately 20 times higher mass accretion rate, and therefore are not observed as persistent sources at low luminosities., Comment: 12 pages, Accepted by ApJ

We use deep images taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope of the disk galaxy NGC 891, to search for globular cluster candidates. This galaxy has long been considered to be a close analog in size and structure to the Milky Way and is nearly edge-on, facilitating studies of its halo population. These extraplanar ACS images, originally intended to study the halo field-star populations, reach deep enough to reveal even the faintest globular clusters that would be similar to those in the Milky Way. From the three pointings we have identified a total of 43 candidates after culling by object morphology, magnitude, and colour. We present (V,I) photometry for all of these, along with measurements of their effective radius and ellipticity. The 16 highest-rank candidates within the whole sample are found to fall in very much the same regions of parameter space occupied by the classic Milky Way globular clusters. Our provisional conclusion from this survey is that the total globular cluster population in NGC 891 as a whole may be almost as large as that of the Milky Way., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures. We present new results on the shock around the southwest radio lobe of Centaurus A using data from the Chandra Very Large Programme observations. The X-ray spectrum of the emission around the outer southwestern edge of the lobe is well described by a single power-law model with Galactic absorption -- thermal models are strongly disfavoured, except in the region closest to the nucleus. We conclude that a significant fraction of the X-ray emission around the southwest part of the lobe is synchrotron, not thermal. We infer that in the region where the shock is strongest and the ambient gas density lowest, the inflation of the lobe is accelerating particles to X-ray synchrotron emitting energies, similar to supernova remnants such as SN1006. This interpretation resolves a problem of our earlier, purely thermal, interpretation for this emission, namely that the density compression across the shock was required to be much larger than the theoretically expected factor of 4. We estimate that the lobe is expanding to the southwest with a velocity of ~2600 km/s, roughly Mach 8 relative to the ambient medium. We discuss the spatial variation of spectral index across the shock region, concluding that our observations constrain gamma_max for the accelerated particles to be 10^8 at the strongest part of the shock, consistent with expectations from diffusive shock acceleration theory. Finally, we consider the implications of these results for the production of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and TeV emission from Centaurus A, concluding that the shock front region is unlikely to be a significant source of UHECRs, but that TeV emission from this region is expected at levels comparable to current limits at TeV energies, for plausible assumed magnetic field strengths., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. We analyze photometric data in V and I for the globular cluster (GC) systems in five of the giant ellipticals in the Coma Cluster: NGC 4874, 4881, 4889, 4926, and IC 4051. We find that the GC luminosity functions are quite similar to one another, with a turnover derived from a composite sample of more than 9,000 GCs at V = 27.71 +- 0.07 (M_V = -7.3). Both a simple Gaussian curve and an evolved Schechter function fit the bright half of the GCLF equally well, though the Coma GCLF is broader and has a higher ``cutoff mass'' (M_c ~ 3 x 10^6 M_Sun) than in any of the Virgo giants. These five Coma members exhibit a huge range in GC specific frequency, from a low of S_N = 0.7 for NGC 4881 up to 12 for IC 4051 and NGC 4874. No single formation scenario appears able to account for these differences in otherwise-similar galaxies. The supergiant NGC 4874 has the richest globular cluster system known, probably holding more than 30,000 clusters; its true extent is not yet determined and may extend well out into the Coma potential well. For the three biggest GC systems (NGC 4874, 4889, IC 4051), all three populations are dominated by red, metal-rich clusters. Their metallicity distributions also may all have the normal bimodal form, with the two sequences at the expected mean colors (blue) = 0.98 and (red) = 1.15. However, the color distributions and relative numbers of metal-rich clusters show intriguing counterexamples to a trend established by Peng et al. 2008 (ApJ 681, 197) for the Virgo galaxies. We present preliminary results from a deep (600 ks) {\em Chandra} observation of the hot interstellar medium of the nearby early-type galaxy Centaurus A (Cen A). We find a surface brightness discontinuity in the gas $\sim$3.5 kpc from the nucleus spanning a 120$^\circ$ arc. The temperature of the gas is 0.60$\pm$0.05 and 0.68$\pm$0.10 keV, interior and exterior to the discontinuity, respectively. The elemental abundance is poorly constrained by the spectral fits, but if the abundance is constant across the discontinuity, there is a factor of 2.3$\pm$0.4 pressure jump across the discontinuity. This would imply that the gas is moving at 470$\pm$100 km s$^{-1}$, or Mach 1.0$\pm$0.2 (1.2$\pm$0.2) relative to the sound speed of the gas external (internal) to the discontinuity. Alternatively, pressure balance could be maintained if there is a large (factor of $\sim$7) discontinuity in the elemental abundance. We suggest that the observed discontinuity is the result of non-hydrostatic motion of the gas core (i.e. sloshing) due to the recent merger. In this situation, both gas motions and abundance gradients are important in the visibility of the discontinuity. Cen A is in the late stages of merging with a small late-type galaxy, and a large discontinuity in density and abundance across a short distance demonstrates that the gas of the two galaxies remains poorly mixed even several hundred million years after the merger. The pressure discontinuity may have had a profound influence on the temporal evolution of the kpc-scale jet. We report an X-ray spectral study of the transverse structure of the Centaurus A jet using new data from the Chandra Cen A Very Large Project. We find that the spectrum steepens with increasing distance from the jet axis, and that this steepening can be attributed to a change in the average spectrum of the knotty emission. Such a trend is unexpected if the knots are predominantly a surface feature residing in a shear layer between faster and slower flows. We suggest that the spectral steepening of the knot emission as a function of distance from the jet axis is due to knot migration, implying a component of transverse motion of knots within the flow., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (Letters)

We present new deep Chandra observations of the Centaurus A jet, with a combined on-source exposure time of 719 ks. These data allow detailed X-ray spectral measurements to be made along the jet out to its disappearance at 4.5 kpc from the nucleus. We distinguish several regimes of high-energy particle acceleration: while the inner part of the jet is dominated by knots and has properties consistent with local particle acceleration at shocks, the particle acceleration in the outer 3.4 kpc of the jet is likely to be dominated by an unknown distributed acceleration mechanism. In addition to several compact counterjet features we detect probable extended emission from a counterjet out to 2.0 kpc from the nucleus, and argue that this implies that the diffuse acceleration process operates in the counterjet as well. A preliminary search for X-ray variability finds no jet knots with dramatic flux density variations, unlike the situation seen in M87., Comment: ApJ L accepted. 4 pages, 4 figures. We have used the ACS camera on HST to obtain (V,I) photometry for 5300 red-giant stars in the halo of the dominant Leo-group member NGC 3379, a galaxy usually regarded as a classic normal giant elliptical. We use this sample of stars to derive the metallicity distribution function (MDF) for its outer-halo field stars 33 kpc from the galaxy center. The MDF is distinctly unlike all the other E galaxies for which we have similar data (including the Local Group dwarf ellipticals, the intermediate-luminosity NGC 3377, and the giant NGC 5128). First, the MDF for the NGC 3379 outer halo is broad and flat, with many stars at every interval in [m/H]. Second, we see a metallicity gradient across our ACS field such that in its outermost region the blue, low-metallicity stars ([m/H] < -0.7) are beginning to dominate and the higher-metallicity stars are rapidly diminishing. Our target field is centered at a projected distance about equal to 12 R_e, twice as far out in units of effective radius as in any of the other galaxies that we have surveyed. If NGC 3379 is indeed representative of large E/S0 galaxies, we predict that such galaxies in general will reveal diffuse low-metallicity subpopulations, but that photometry at radii r ~ 10 - 15 R_e will be necessary to see the faint low-metallicity component clearly., Comment: 48 pages, 15 figures. We have used the ACS camera on HST to obtain (V,I) photometry for 57,000 red-giant stars in the halo of the Leo elliptical NGC 3377. We use this sample of stars to derive the metallicity distribution function (MDF) for its halo field stars, and comment on its chemical evolution history compared with both larger and smaller E galaxies. Our ACS/WFC field spans a radial range extending from 4 to 18 kpc projected distance from the center of NGC 3377 and thus covers a significant portion of this galaxy's halo. We find that the MDF is broad, reaching a peak at [m/H] ~ -0.6$, but containing virtually no stars more metal-poor than log [m/H] = -1.5$. It may, in addition, have relatively few stars more metal-rich than [m/H] = -0.3$, although interpretation of the high-metallicity end of the MDF is limited by photometric completeness that affects the detection of the reddest, most metal-rich stars. NGC 3377 appears to have an enrichment history intermediate between those of normal dwarf ellipticals and the much larger giants. As yet, we find no clear evidence that the halo of NGC 3377 contains a significant population of ``young'' (< 3 Gy) stars., Comment: 40 pages, 17 figures

The structures of globular clusters (GCs) reflect their dynamical states and past histories. High-resolution imaging allows the exploration of morphologies of clusters in other galaxies. Surface brightness profiles from new Hubble Space Telescope observations of 34 globular clusters in M31 are presented, together with fits of several different structural models to each cluster. M31 clusters appear to be adequately fit by standard King models, and do not obviously require alternate descriptions with relatively stronger halos, such as are needed to fit many GCs in other nearby galaxies. The derived structural parameters are combined with corrected versions of those measured in an earlier survey to construct a comprehensive catalog of structural and dynamical parameters for M31 GCs with a sample size similar to that for the Milky Way. Clusters in M31, the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds, Fornax dwarf spheroidal and NGC 5128 define a very tight fundamental plane with identical slopes. The combined evidence for these widely different galaxies strongly reinforces the view that old globular clusters have near-universal structural properties regardless of host environment., Comment: AJ in press; 59 pages including 16 figures

We present optical measurements of the faint end of the luminosity function in the core of the Coma cluster. Dwarf galaxies are detected down to a limiting magnitude of R approx. 25.75 in images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. This represents the faintest determination of the Coma luminosity function to date. With the assumption that errors due to cosmic variance are small, evidence is found for a steep faint end slope with alpha < -2. We have investigated a number of globular cluster candidates from a recent wide-field study by Harris et al. (2004a) of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. We used the Magellan I telescope + MagIC camera under excellent seeing (0.3"-0.6") and obtained very high resolution images for a sample of 44 candidates. Our images allow us to study the light profiles of the likely clusters. This is the first ground-based study of structural parameters for globular clusters outside the Local Group. We compare the psf-deconvolved profiles with King models and derive structural parameters, ellipticities and surface brightnesses. In general, our clusters are similar in size, ellipticity, core radius and central surface brightness to their counterparts in other galaxies, in particular those in NGC 5128 observed with HST by Harris et al. (2002). However, they extend to higher ellipticities and larger half-light radii than their Galactic counterparts. Combining our results with those of Harris et al. fills in the gaps previously existing in $r_h - M_V$ parameter space and indicates that any substantial difference between presumed distinct cluster types in this diagram, including for example the Faint Fuzzies of Larsen & Brodie (2000) and the `extended, luminous' M31 clusters of Huxor et al. (2005) is now removed and that clusters form a continuum in this diagram. Indeed, this continuum now extends to the realm of the Ultra Compact Dwarfs. We have carried out additional analysis to quantify the contamination by background galaxies. This shows that, although galaxies cannot be easily told apart from clusters in some of the structural diagrams, the combination of excellent image quality and Washington photometry should limit the contamination to roughly 10% of the population of cluster candidates., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present new (B,I) photometry for the globular cluster systems in eight Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), obtained with the ACS/WFC camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. In the very rich cluster systems that reside within these giant galaxies, we find that all have strongly bimodal color distributions All the BCGs show population gradients, with much higher relative numbers of red clusters within 5 kpc of their centers, consistent with their having formed at later times than the blue, metal-poor population. A striking new feature of the color distributions emerging from our data is that for the brightest clusters (M_I < -10.5) the color distribution becomes broad and less obviously bimodal. we suggest that it may be a characteristic of many BCGs. Furthermore, the blue (metal-poor) clusters become progressively redder with increasing luminosity, following a mass/metallicity scaling relation Z ~ M^0.55. Using the HST Wide Field Camera of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), we have obtained deep (V,I) photometry of an outer-halo field in NGC 5128, to a limiting magnitude of I~29. Our photometry directly reveals the core helium-burning stellar population (the ``red clump'' or horizontal branch) in a giant E/S0 galaxy for the first time. The color-magnitude diagram displays a very wide red giant branch (RGB), an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) bump, and the red clump; no noticeable population of blue HB stars is present, confirming previous suggestions that old, very metal-poor population is not ubiquitous in the halo of this galaxy. From the upper RGB we derive the metallicity distribution, which we find to be very broad and moderately metal-rich, with average [M/H]=-0.64 and dispersion 0.49 dex. The MDF is virtually identical to that found in other halo fields observed previously with the HST, but with an enhanced metal-rich population which was partially missed in the previous surveys due to V-band incompleteness for these very red stars. Combining the metallicity sensitive colors of the RGB stars with the metallicity and age sensitive features of the AGB bump and the red clump, we infer the average age of the halo stars to be 8^{+3}_{-3.5} Gy. We present the results of combined optical and near-infrared photometry for the globular cluster systems of the giant ellipticals IC 4051 and NGC 3311. We use the reduced age-metallicity degeneracy in (V-I) vs.(V-H) color-color diagrams to derive the cumulative age distribution within the red sub-population of globular clusters and to search for age sub-populations. The age distribution is then compared to the one determined for simulated globular cluster systems in order to set constraints on the relative age and size of these globular cluster sub-populations. In both galaxies we find a significant fraction of globular clusters with ages between 2- 5 Gyr. We also investigate the metallicity distribution in both systems. Small number statistics prevent us from making any definite statements concerning NGC 3311, but we find that the derived metallicity distribution of the IC 4051 clusters strongly depends on the assumed age distribution. Based on our most likely result that finds a large number of young/intermediate age clusters (~2 Gyr) within the selected globular cluster sample, we find metallicity peaks at $\sim$ -0.2 for the old clusters and +0.8 for the young clusters. Only few very metal poor clusters are found. However, the metallicity distribution within the young/intermediate globular cluster population is significantly affected by our choice of the applied Single Stellar Population model. The mean metallicity of the second generation of globular clusters changes from the above mentioned and extremely high +0.8 dex to +0.2 dex. We report on the population of point sources discovered during an 18.5 ksec Chandra ACIS-S observation of the Sombrero Galaxy. We present the luminosity function, the spectra of the 6 brightest sources, consider correlations with globular clusters (GCs) and with planetary nebulae (PNe), and study the galaxy's population of SSSs. We detected 122 sources, 22 of them are identified as luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs). There is an over density of SSSs within 1.5 kpc of the nucleus, which is itself the brightest X-ray source. SSSs are also found in the disk and halo, with 1 SSS in a globular cluster (GC). Several sources in Sombrero's halo are good candidates for SSS models in which the accretor is a nuclear-burning white dwarf. In total, 32 X-ray sources are associated with GCs. The majority of sources with luminosity > 1e38 erg/s are in GCs. These results for M104, an Sa galaxy, are similar to what has been found for elliptical galaxies and for the late-type spiral M31. We find that those optically bright GCs with X-ray sources house only the brightest X-ray sources. We find that, in common with other galaxies, there appears to be a positive connection between young (metal-rich) GCs and X-ray sources, but that the brightest X-ray sources are equally likely to be in metal-poor GCs. We propose a model which can explain the trends seen in the data sets from the Sombrero and other galaxies. Thermal-time scale mass transfer can occur in some of the the younger clusters in which the turn-off mass is slightly greater than $0.8 M_\odot$; multiplicity may play a role in some of the most massive clusters; accretion from giant stars may be the dominant mechanism in some older, less massive and less centrally concentrated clusters., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. We examined the maximum bolometric peak luminosities during type I X-ray bursts from the persistent or transient luminous X-ray sources in globular clusters. We show that for about two thirds of the sources the maximum peak luminosities during photospheric radius expansion X-ray bursts extend to a critical value of (3.79+/-0.15)x10^{38} erg/s, assuming the total X-ray burst emission is entirely due to black-body radiation and the recorded maximum luminosity is the actual peak luminosity. This empirical critical luminosity is consistent with the Eddington luminosity limit for hydrogen poor material. Since the critical luminosity is more or less always reached during photospheric radius expansion X-ray bursts (except for one source), such bursts may be regarded as empirical standard candles. However, because significant deviations do occur, our standard candle is only accurate to within 15%. We present new imaging measurements of 27 individual globular clusters in the halo of the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 5128, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope STIS and WFPC2 cameras. Combining these with similar data for selected inner-halo clusters from Holland et al. 1999 (AAp, 348, 418), we now have a total sample of 43 NGC 5128 globular clusters with measured structural properties. Classic King-model profiles match the clusters extremely well, and their core- and half-light radii, central surface brightness, and central concentration fall in very much the same range as do the clusters in the Milky Way and M31. We find half a dozen bright clusters which show tentative evidence for light that extends beyond the nominal tidal radius, or possibly ones in which anisotropic velocity distributions are important. We also confirm previous indications that NGC 5128 contains relatively more clusters with large (> 0.2) ellipticity than does the Milky Way. Finally, calculations of the cluster binding energies E_b as defined by McLaughlin 2000 (ApJ, 539,618) show that the NGC 5128 clusters occupy the same extremely narrow region of the parametric ``fundamental plane'' as do their Milky Way counterparts. Our data are thus strongly consistent with the claim that the globular clusters in both NGC 5128 and the Milky Way are fundamentally the same type of object: old star clusters with similar mass-to-light ratios and King-model structures., Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX, plus 15 figures; Astronomical Journal vol.124, in press for Sept 2002. We present new HST/WFPC2 (V,I) photometry for the red-giant stars in NGC 5128 at a projected distance of 8 kpc from the galaxy center, which probe a mixture of its inner halo and outer bulge. The color-magnitude diagram shows an old red-giant branch which is even broader in color than our two previously studied outer-halo fields (at 21 and 31 kpc), with significant numbers of stars extending to Solar metallicity and higher. The peak frequency of the metallicity distribution function (MDF) is at [m/H] ~ -0.4, with even fewer metal-poor stars than in the outer-halo fields. We find that the main features of the halo MDF can be reproduced by a simple chemical evolution model in which early star formation goes on simultaneously with an initial stage of rapid infall of very metal-poor gas, after which the infall dies away exponentially. A comparison with the MDF for the NGC 5128 globular clusters indicates that there is a clear decrease of specific frequency $S_N$ (number of clusters per unit halo light) with increasing metallicity, from S_N ~ 4-8 at [Fe/H] < -1.6 down to S_N = 1.5 at [Fe/H] > -1. Globular clusters in most large galaxies are a mixture of metal-poor and metal-rich (bimodal), but the halo stars are almost entirely metal-rich. This and other lines of evidence argue that the metal-poor globular clusters formed within widely distributed 10^8-10^9 Solar masses gas clouds (supergiant GMCs) during an early burst in which most of the gas was ejected or unused till later rounds of star formation. New simulations of the growth of pre-galactic potential wells in the early universe now indicate that the initial power-law form of the globular cluster mass distribution (dN/dM ~ M^-1.8) is a miniature replica of the mass distribution of the SGMCs themselves, which grow hierarchically in the CDM potential wells of large protogalaxies., Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, plus 5 figures in separate files Extragalactic Star Clusters, IAU Symposium 207, in press (ed. The metallicity distribution function (MDF) for the old red-giant stars in the halo of NGC 5128, the nearest giant elliptical galaxy, is virtually identical with the MDF for the old-disk stars in the LMC and also strongly resembles the halo MDF in M31. These galaxies all have high mean halo metallicities ( ~ -0.4$) with very small proportions of low-metallicity stars. These observations reinforce the view that metal-rich halos are quite normal for large galaxies of all types. Such systems are unlikely to have built up by accretion of pre-existing, gas-free small satellite galaxies, unless these satellites had an extremely shallow mass distribution (d log N / d log M > -1). Using archival \hst WFPC2 data, we derive the metallicity distribution, luminosity function, and spatial structure of the globular cluster system around IC 4051, a giant E galaxy on the outskirts of the Coma cluster core. The metallicity distribution derived from the (V-I) colors has a mean [Fe/H] = -0.3, a near-complete lack of metal-poor clusters, and only a small metallicity gradient with radius; it may, however, have two roughly equal metallicity subcomponents, centered at [Fe/H] ~ 0.0 and -1.0. The luminosity distribution (GCLF) has the Gaussian-like form observed in all other giant E galaxies, with a peak (turnover) at V = 27.8, consistent with a Coma distance of 100 Mpc. The radial profiles of both the GCS and the halo light show an unusually steep falloff which may indicate that the halo of this galaxy has been tidally truncated. Lastly, the specific frequency of the GCS is remarkably large: we find S_N = 11 +- 2, resembling the central cD-type galaxies even though IC 4051 is not a cD or brightest cluster elliptical. A formation model consistent with most of the observations would be that this galaxy was subjected to removal of a large fraction of its protogalactic gas shortly after its main phase of globular cluster formation, probably by its first passage through the Coma core. Deep HST/WFPC2 (V,I) photometry is used to investigate the globular cluster system (GCS) in NGC 4874, the central cD galaxy of the Coma cluster. The luminosity function of the clusters displays its normal Gaussian-like shape and turnover level. Other features of the system are surprising: the GCS is (a) spatially extended, with core radius r_c = 22 kpc, (b) entirely metal-poor (a narrow, unimodal metallicity distribution with mean [Fe/H] = -1.5), and (c) modestly populated, with specific frequency S_N = 3.7 +- 0.5. We suggest on the basis of some simple models that as much as half of this galaxy might have accreted from low-mass satellites, but no single one of the three classic modes of galaxy formation (accretion, disk mergers, in situ formation) can supply a fully satisfactory formation picture. Even when they are used in combination, strong challenges to these models remain. The principal anomaly in this GCS is essentially the complete lack of metal-rich clusters. If these were present in normal (M87-like) numbers in addition to the metal-poor ones that are already there, then the GCS in total would more closely resemble what we see in many other giant E galaxies., Comment: 27 pp. with 9 Figures. We have used deep HST/WFPC2 images in V (F606W) and I (F814W) to measure the luminosity distribution of the globular clusters in NGC 4874, the central cD galaxy of the Coma cluster. We find the ``turnover'' point of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) to lie at V = 27.88 +/- 0.12, while the overall GCLF shape matches the standard Gaussian-like form with dispersion SIGMA_V = 1.49 +/- 0.12. We use the GCLF as a standard candle by matching the turnover points in NGC 4874 and another Coma elliptical, IC 4051, with those of the giant ellipticals in the Virgo cluster (M87 and five others). The result is (m-M)_(Coma - Virgo) = 4.06 +/- 0.11 magnitudes, which converts to a Coma distance d = 102 Mpc if the Virgo distance modulus is (m-M)_0 = 30.99 +/- 0.04. The Hubble constant which emerges from our GCLF measurement is then H0 = (69 +/- 9) km/s/Mpc. We confirm this H0 value with a novel presentation of the ``Hubble diagram'' for GCLFs in giant E galaxies. The Hubble Space Telescope has been used to obtain WFPC2 (V,I) photometry for a sample of 10,000 red giant stars in the outer halo of the giant elliptical NGC 5128. Comparison with the fiducial RGBs of Milky Way globular clusters and model isochrones demonstrates that this outer-halo population is completely dominated by old stars, with an extremely broad metallicity range extending from the most metal-poor Galactic globulars at [Fe/H] = -2 up to Solar abundance. By interpolation within the fiducial lines we derive the metallicity distribution function (MDF) for the halo, which turns out to have a distinct two-component structure: about 2/3 of the stars belong to a sharply peaked metal-richer component ([Fe/H] = -0.3, sigma = 0.22 dex), while the remaining one-third belong to a more extended metal-poor distribution sloping gradually down to low metallicity. The MDF can be remarkably well matched by a simple closed-box model of chemical enrichment, where the first component starts with an initial abundance Z_0 =0 and the second component with Z_0 = 0.18 Z_Sun. The Hubble Space Telescope has been used to obtain WFPC2 (V,I) photometry for a large sample of stars in the outer halo of the giant elliptical NGC 5128 (d = 4 Mpc). The globular cluster N5128-C44, at the center of the Planetary Camera field, is well enough resolved to permit the construction of a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for it which covers the brightest two magnitudes of the giant branch. The CMD is consistent with that of a normal old, moderately low-metallicity ([Fe/H] = -1.30 globular cluster, distinctly more metal-poor than most of the field halo stars at the same projected location (which average [Fe/H] ~ -0.5). The Virgo and Fornax clusters of galaxies play central roles in determining the Hubble constant H_0. A powerful and direct way of establishing distances for elliptical galaxies is to use the luminosities of the brightest red-giant stars (the TRGB luminosity, at M_I = -4.2). Here we report the direct observation of the TRGB stars in a dwarf elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. We find its distance to be 15.7 +- 1.5 Megaparsecs, from which we estimate a Hubble constant of H_0 = 77 +- 8 km/s/Mpc. New VRI photometry is presented for the globular clusters in the innermost 140'' of the M87 halo. The results are used to discuss several issues concerning the formation and evolution of globular cluster systems in supergiant ellipticals like M87. (1) we find no significant change in the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) with galactocentric radius, for cluster masses M < 10^5 solar masses, indicating that the main effects of dynamical evolution may be only on lower-mass clusters. (2) Within the core radius (1') of the globular cluster system, the metallicity distribution is uniform, but at larger radii the mean metallicity declines steadily as Z ~ r^-0.9. (3) The various options for explaining the existence of high specific frequency galaxies like M87 are evaluated, and scaling laws for the GCSs in these galaxies are given. Interpretations involving secondary evolution (formation of many globular clusters during mergers, intergalactic globular clusters, etc.) are unlikely to be the primary explanation for high-S_N galaxies. (4) We suggest that central-supergiant E galaxies may have formed in an exceptionally turbulent or high-density environment in which an early, powerful galactic wind drove out a high fraction of the protogalactic gas, thus artificially boosting the specific, Comment: 67 pages, 17 figures. The WFPC2 camera on HST has been used to obtain deep main sequence photometry of the low-metallicity ([Fe/H]=-2.14), outer-halo globular cluster NGC 2419. A differential fit of the NGC 2419 CMD to that of the similarly metal-poor \ standard cluster M92 shows that they have virtually identical principal sequences and thus the same age to well within 1 Gyr. Since other low-metallicity clusters throughout the Milky Way halo have this same age to within the 1-Gyr precision of the differential age technique, we conclude that the earliest star (or globular cluster) formation began at essentially the same time everywhere in the Galactic halo throughout a region now almost 200 kpc in diameter. Thus for the metal-poorest clusters in the halo there is no detectable age gradient with Galactocentric distance. To estimate the absolute age of NGC 2419 and M92, we fit newly computed isochrones transformed through model-atmosphere calculations to the (M_V,V-I) plane, with assumed distance scales that represent the range currently debated in the literature. Unconstrained isochrone fits give M_V(RR) = 0.55 \pm 0.06 and a resulting age of 14 to 15 Gyr. Incorporating the full effects of helium diffusion would further reduce this estimate by about 1 Gyr. A distance scale as bright as M_V(RR) = 0.15 for [Fe/H] = -2, as has recently been reported, would leave several serious problems which have no obvious solution in the context of current stellar models., Comment: 32 pages, aastex, 9 postscript figures; accepted for publication in AJ, September 1997. We present the first color-magnitude study for Palomar 2, a distant and heavily obscured globular cluster near the Galactic anticenter. Our (V,V-I) color-magnitude diagram (CMD), obtained with the UH8K camera at the CFHT, reaches V(lim) = 24 and clearly shows the principal sequences of the cluster, though with substantial overall foreground absorption and differential reddening. The CMD morphology shows a well populated red horizontal branch with a sparser extension to the blue, similar to clusters such as NGC 1261, 1851, or 6229 with metallicities near [Fe/H] = -1.3$. From an average of several indicators, we estimate the foreground reddening at E(B-V) = 1.24 +- 0.07 and obtain a true distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 17.1 +- 0.3$, placing it about 34 kpc from the Galactic center. We use starcounts of the bright stars to measure the core radius, half-mass radius, and central concentration of the cluster. We review observational evidence bearing on the formation of a prototypical large spiral galaxy, the Milky Way. New ground- and space-based studies of globular star clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies provide a wealth of information to constrain theories of galaxy formation. It appears likely that the Milky Way formed by a combination of rapid, dissipative collapse and mergers, but the relative contributions of these two mechanisms remain controversial. New evidence, however, indicates that initial star and star cluster formation occurred simultaneously over a volume that presently extends to twice the distance of the Magellanic Clouds., Comment: 8 pages. The two brightest elliptical galaxies in the Eridanus A group, NGC 1400 and NGC 1407, have been observed in both the Washington T_1 and Kron-Cousins I filters to obtain photometry of their globular cluster systems (GCSs). This group of galaxies is of particular interest due to its exceptionally high M/L value, previously estimated at ~3000h, making this cluster highly dark-matter-dominated. NGC 1400's radial velocity (549 km/s) is extremely low compared to that of the central galaxy of Eridanus A (NGC 1407 with $v_\odot$ = 1766 km/s) and the other members of the system, suggesting that it is a foreground galaxy projected by chance onto the cluster. Using the shapes of the globular cluster luminosity functions, however, we derive distances of 17.6 +/- 3.1 Mpc to NGC 1407 and 25.4 +/- 7.0 Mpc to NGC 1400. These results support earlier conclusions that NGC 1400 is at the distance of Eridanus A and therefore has a large peculiar velocity. Specific frequencies are also derived for these galaxies, yielding values of S_N = 4.0 +/- 1.3 for NGC 1407 and S_N = 5.2 +/- 2.0 for NGC 1400. We have analysed new R-band photometry of globular clusters in NGC 6166, the cD galaxy in the cooling flow cluster A2199. In combination with the earlier B photometry of Pritchet \& Harris (1990), we obtain B$-$R colours for $\sim$ 40 globular clusters in NGC 6166. The mean B$-$R is 1.26 $\pm$ 0.11, corresponding to a mean [Fe/H] = $-$1 $\pm$ 0.4. Given that NGC 6166 is one of the most luminous cD galaxies studied to date, our result implies significant scatter in the relationship between mean cluster [Fe/H] and parent galaxy luminosity. We obtain a globular cluster specific frequency of S$_N$ $\sim$ 9, with a possible range between 5 and 18. This value is inconsistent with the value of S$_N$ $\leq$ 4 determined earlier by Pritchet \& Harris (1990) from B-band photometry, and we discuss possible reasons for the discrepancy. Luminosity Functions have been obtained for very faint dwarf galaxies in the cores of four rich clusters of galaxies (Abell 2052, 2107, 2199 and 2666). It is found that the luminosity function of dwarf galaxies rises very steeply in these clusters, with a power-law slope of \alpha -2.2 (down to absolute limiting magnitudes M_I = -13 and M_B = -11 for H_0 = 75 km/s/Mpc). A steepening of the luminosity function at faint magnitudes may in fact be a common feature of both cluster and field populations. Such a result may explain the observed excess counts of faint, intermediate redshift galaxies in the Universe, without resorting to more exotic phenomena. We have used the CFHT REDEYE infrared camera to obtain deep J and K' images of four fields in the globular cluster M13. The composite K, J-K color-magnitude diagram (CMD) extends from the upper red giant branch (RGB) to 2 magnitudes below the main sequence turn-off (MSTO). Selected [Fe/H]~ -1.6 isochrones from Bergbusch & VandenBerg (1992, ApJS, 81, 163) and Straniero & Chieffi (1991, ApJS, 76, 525) are transformed onto the near-infrared observational plane, and these suggest an age for M13 in the range 14-16 Gyr. We emphasize that any effort to estimate ages should be considered as tentative given uncertainties in the input physics; however, these uncertainties notwithstanding, comparisons between the near-infrared isochrones indicate that age differences of order +/-2 Gyr should be detectable among metal-poor clusters on the K, J-K plane. Building on this result, we find that the difference in J-K color between the MSTO and the base of the RGB in M13 is the same as in M4, and conclude that these clusters have similar ages. This conclusion is verified by comparing (1) the K brightnesses of the MSTO, and (2) the morphologies of optical CMDs. Finally, we investigate the mass function of main sequence stars in M13 with distances between 3 and 6 core radii from the cluster center. The mass functions in the interval 0.55 and 0.8 solar masses are relatively flat, independent of radius. Optical studies at larger radii have found non-zero mass function indices in this same mass interval, and we attribute this radial variation in mass function morphology to dynamical evolution., Comment: 34 pages, latex, figures available upon request to authors
