Search

The detection of hot atomic hydrogen and heavy atoms and ions at high altitudes around close-in extrasolar giant planets (EGPs) such as HD209458b imply that these planets have hot and rapidly escaping atmospheres that extend to several planetary radii. These characteristics, however, cannot be generalized to all close-in EGPs. The thermal escape mechanism and mass loss rate from EGPs depend on a complex interplay between photochemistry and radiative transfer driven by the stellar UV radiation. In this work we explore how these processes change under different levels of irradiation on giant planets with different characteristics. We confirm that there are two distinct regimes of thermal escape from EGPs, and that the transition between these regimes is relatively sharp. The detections of atomic hydrogen, heavy atoms and ions surrounding the extrasolar giant planet (EGP) HD209458b constrain the composition, temperature and density profiles in its upper atmosphere. Thus the observations provide guidance for models that have so far predicted a range of possible conditions. We present the first hydrodynamic escape model for the upper atmosphere that includes all of the detected species in order to explain their presence at high altitudes, and to further constrain the temperature and velocity profiles. This model calculates the stellar heating rates based on recent estimates of photoelectron heating efficiencies, and includes the photochemistry of heavy atoms and ions in addition to hydrogen and helium. The composition at the lower boundary of the escape model is constrained by a full photochemical model of the lower atmosphere. We confirm that molecules dissociate near the 1 microbar level, and find that complex molecular chemistry does not need to be included above this level. We also confirm that diffusive separation of the detected species does not occur because the heavy atoms and ions collide frequently with the rapidly escaping H and H+. This means that the abundance of the heavy atoms and ions in the thermosphere simply depends on the elemental abundances and ionization rates. We show that, as expected, H and O remain mostly neutral up to at least 3 Rp, whereas both C and Si are mostly ionized at significantly lower altitudes. Transits in the H I 1216 A (Lyman alpha), O I 1334 A, C II 1335 A, and Si III 1206.5 A lines constrain the properties of the upper atmosphere of HD209458b. In addition to probing the temperature and density profiles in the thermosphere, they have implications for the properties of the lower atmosphere. Fits to the observations with a simple empirical model and a direct comparison with a more complex hydrodynamic model constrain the mean temperature and ionization state of the atmosphere, and imply that the optical depth of the extended thermosphere of the planet in the atomic resonance lines is significant. In particular, it is sufficient to explain the observed transit depths in the H I 1216 A line. The detection of O at high altitudes implies that the minimum mass loss rate from the planet is approximately 6e6 kg/s. The mass loss rate based on our hydrodynamic model is higher than this and implies that diffusive separation is prevented for neutral species with a mass lower than about 130 amu by the escape of H. Heavy ions are transported to the upper atmosphere by Coulomb collisions with H+ and their presence does not provide as strong constraints on the mass loss rate as the detection of heavy neutral atoms. Models of the upper atmosphere with solar composition and heating based on the average solar X-ray and EUV flux agree broadly with the observations but tend to underestimate the transit depths in the O I, C II, and Si III lines. Gamma-ray line emission from radioactive decay of 60Fe provides constraints on nucleosynthesis in massive stars and supernovae. The spectrometer SPI on board INTEGRAL has accumulated nearly three years of data on gamma-ray emission from the Galactic plane. We have analyzed these data with suitable instrumental-background models and sky distributions to produce high-resolution spectra of Galactic emission. We detect the gamma-ray lines from 60Fe decay at 1173 and 1333 keV, obtaining an improvement over our earlier measurement of both lines with now 4.9 sigma significance for the combination of the two lines. The average flux per line is (4.4 \pm 0.9) \times 10^{-5} ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} rad^{-1} for the inner Galaxy region. Deriving the Galactic 26Al gamma-ray line flux with using the same set of observations and analysis method, we determine the flux ratio of 60Fe/26Al gamma-rays as 0.148 \pm 0.06. We announce the forthcoming public release of Version 1.1 of MGGPOD, a user-friendly suite of Monte Carlo codes built around the widely used GEANT (Version 3.21) package. MGGPOD is capable of simulating ab initio the physical processes relevant for the production of instrumental backgrounds. These processes include the build-up and delayed decay of radioactive isotopes as well as the prompt de-excitation of excited nuclei, both of which give rise to a plethora of instrumental gamma-ray background lines in addition to continuum backgrounds. A detailed qualitative and quantitative understanding of instrumental backgrounds is crucial for most stages of high-energy astronomy missions. Improvements implemented in Version 1.1 of the proven MGGPOD Monte Carlo suite include: additional beam geometry options, the capability of modelling polarized photons, additional output formats suitable e.g. for event reconstruction algorithms, improved neutron interaction cross sections, and improved treatment of the radioactive decay of isomeric nuclear states. A new generation of Ge-based high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometers has allowed accurate measurements to be made of the profiles, widths and energies of the gamma-ray lines emitted in the impulsive phases of solar flares. Here we present measurements in two flares of the energies of the de-excitation lines of 12C and 16O at 4.4 and 6.1 MeV respectively by the Ge spectrometer SPI on board INTEGRAL, from which Doppler shifts are derived and compared with those expected from the recoil of 12C and 16O nuclei which were excited by the impacts of flare-accelerated ions. An anomalous Doppler measurement (in terms of recoil theory) has been reported by the Ge spectrometer RHESSI in a flare near the east limb, and explained by a tilt of the magnetic field lines at the footpoint of a magnetic loop away from the vertical, and towards the observer. This might be interpreted to imply a significant difference between the Doppler shifts on the east and west limbs, if it is a general phenomenon. SPI observed both east and west limb flares and found no significant difference in Doppler shifts. We also measured the shapes and fluences of these lines, and their fluence ratio to the 2.2 MeV line from the capture of flare-generated neutrons. Analyses of both quantities using thick-target models parametrized by solar physical and geometric quantities suggest that the two flares studied here also have magnetic fields tilted towards the observer, though the significance of the measurements is not high., Comment: 9 pp., 7 figs., accepted by A&A

We present a measurement of the sky distribution of positronium (Ps) annihilation continuum emission obtained with the SPI spectrometer on board ESA's INTEGRAL observatory. The only sky region from which significant Ps continuum emission is detected is the Galactic bulge. The Ps continuum emission is circularly symmetric about the Galactic centre, with an extension of about 8 deg FWHM. Within measurement uncertainties, the sky distribution of the Ps continuum emission is consistent with that found by us for the 511 keV electron-positron annihilation line using SPI. Assuming that 511 keV line and Ps continuum emission follow the same spatial distribution, we derive a Ps fraction of 0.92 +/- 0.09. These results strengthen our conclusions regarding the origin of positrons in our Galaxy based on observations of the 511 keV line. In particular, they suggest that the main source of Galactic positrons is associated with an old stellar population, such as Type Ia supernovae, classical novae, or low-mass X-ray binaries. It is believed that core-collapse supernovae (CCSN), occurring at a rate about once per century, have seeded the interstellar medium with long-lived radioisotopes such as 60Fe (half-life 1.5 Myr), which can be detected by the gamma rays emitted when they beta-decay. Here we report the detection of the 60Fe decay lines at 1173 keV and 1333 keV with fluxes 3.7 +/- 1.1 x 10(-5) ph cm(-2) s(-1) per line, in spectra taken by the SPI spectrometer on board INTEGRAL during its first year. The same analysis applied to the 1809 keV line of 26Al yielded a line flux ratio 60Fe/26Al = 0.11 +/- 0.03. The status of the analysis of the electron/positron annihilation radiation performed by INTEGRAL/SPI in the 4th GALACTIC QUADRANT is reported. We use data from the first two Galactic Center Deep Exposures (GCDE) and from the Galactic Plane Scans (GPS). The analysis presented here is focused on the spectroscopic aspects of the electron/positron annihilation radiation. Intense and complex instrumental backgrounds, against which the much smaller signals from celestial sources have to be discerned, are a notorious problem for low and intermediate energy gamma-ray astronomy (~50 keV - 10 MeV). Therefore a detailed qualitative and quantitative understanding of instrumental line and continuum backgrounds is crucial for most stages of gamma-ray astronomy missions, ranging from the design and development of new instrumentation through performance prediction to data reduction. Due to its fine energy resolution, these spectra reveal the complex instrumental background in formidable detail, particularly the many prompt and delayed gamma-ray lines. During its first year in orbit the INTEGRAL observatory performed deep exposures of the Galactic Center region and scanning observations of the Galactic plane. We report on the status of our analysis of the positron annihilation radiation from the 4th Galactic quadrant with the spectrometer SPI, focusing on the sky distribution of the 511 keV line emission. Er_2Ti_2O_7 has been suggested to be a realization of the frustrated < 111 > XY pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet, for which theory predicts fluctuation-induced symmetry breaking in a highly degenerate ground state manifold. We present a theoretical analysis of the classical model compared to neutron scattering experiments on the real material, both below and above T_N = 1.173(2) K. The model correctly predicts the ordered magnetic structure, suggesting that the real system has order stabilised by zero-point quantum fluctuations that can be modelled by classical spin wave theory. The "Wind" spacecraft carrying the Transient Gamma Spectrometer (TGRS) moves in an extremely elliptical orbit that largely avoids Earth's trapped radiation belts and albedo gamma-radiation. The TGRS therefore enjoys a relatively low level of background that is also extremely stable. We show how this stability enables modeling of the time variability of background lines, which in turn enables a novel technique of background subtraction to be used in the detection of transient astrophysical lines. We apply a simple version of this method to the line at 478 keV that is expected to arise from nucleosynthesis of 7Be in nearby novae. This search covers the entire southern ecliptic hemisphere during 1995-1997, including five known individual events, and possible undiscovered individual events. The TGRS design also uses "Wind"'s 3 s rotation period to modulate signals from the Galactic Center (GC). We use this feature of the instrument to search for a quasi-constant level of 478 keV emission from the accumulation of 7Be from several novae that are expected to occur in the direction of the GC during that isotope's 53 d half-life. We derive upper limits on the transient (single-nova) emission which improve on previous limits by about an order of magnitude, and limits on the steady (many-nova) emission which represent a factor 2 improvement. Only weak limits can be placed on the key parameters in the nucleosynthesis and ejection of 7Be, however., Comment: Ap.J. vol. 563 no.2; 26 pp. Latex + 5 figs. Postscript

Neutron scattering has been used to investigate the magnetic correlations in the the spin ice material dysprosium titanate, Dy2Ti2O7. An isotopically enriched sample was used to minimise neutron absorption. In zero field no magnetic order was observed down to 50 mK but the magnetic diffuse scattering was in qualitative agreement with that expected for the disordered low temperature state of dipolar spin ice. Application of a field of ~ 0.8 T in the [100] direction led to long range order. With the field applied in the [1-10] direction a coexistence of long range ferromagnetic and short range antiferromagnetic order was observed. This is attributed to the pinning of only half the spins by the field. The hysteresis loops in both field orientations displayed unusual steps and plateaus., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

The Ising-like spin ice model, with a macroscopically degenerate ground state, has been shown to be approximated by several real materials. Here we investigate a model related to spin ice, in which the Ising spins are replaced by classical Heisenberg spins. These populate a cubic pyrochlore lattice and are coupled to nearest neighbours by a ferromagnetic exchange term J and to the local <1,1,1> axes by a single-ion anisotropy term D. The near neighbour spin ice model corresponds to the case D/J infinite. For finite D/J we find that the macroscopic degeneracy of spin ice is broken and the ground state is magnetically ordered into a four-sublattice structure. The transition to this state is first-order for D/J > 5 and second-order for D/J < 5 with the two regions separated by a tricritical point. We investigate the magnetic phase diagram with an applied field along [1,0,0] and show that it can be considered analogous to that of a ferroelectric., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The pyrochlore material $\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}$ has been suggested to show ``spin ice'' behaviour. We present neutron scattering and specific heat results that establish unambiguously that Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ exhibits spin ice correlations at low temperature. Diffuse magnetic neutron scattering from Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is found to be quite well described by a near neighbour spin ice model and very accurately described by a dipolar spin ice model. The heat capacity is well accounted for by the sum of a dipolar spin ice contribution and an expected nuclear spin contribution, known to exist in other Ho$^{3+}$ salts. The Transient Gamma Ray Spectrometer (TGRS) on board the WIND spacecraft has spent most of the interval 1995-1997 in a high-altitude orbit where gamma-ray backgrounds are low. Its high-resolution Ge spectrometer is thus able to detect weak lines which are slightly offset from stronger background features. One such line is predicted from nucleosynthesis in classical novae, where beta-decays on a time-scale of a few hours in an expanding envelope produce positrons that annihilate to generate a line which is blueshifted by a few keV away from the background annihilation line at 511 keV. The broad TGRS field of view contained five known Galactic novae during 1995 January - 1997 June, and we have searched the spectra taken around the times of these events for the blueshifted nova annihilation line. Although no definite detections were made, the method is shown to be sensitive enough to detect novae occurring on ONeMg-rich white dwarfs out to about 2.5 kpc., Comment: 27 pp. + 10 figs., or offprint mailed by request to harris@tgrs2.gsfc.nasa.gov

The TGRS experiment on board the Wind spacecraft has many advantages as a sky monitor --- broad field of view (~2 pi) centered on the south ecliptic pole), long life (1994-present), and stable low background and continuous coverage due to Wind's high altitude high eccentricity orbit. The Ge detector has sufficient energy resolution (3-4 keV at 511 keV) to resolve a cosmic positron annihilation line from the strong background annihilation line from beta-decays induced by cosmic ray impacts on the instrument, if the cosmic line is Doppler-shifted by this amount. Such lines (blueshifted) are predicted from nucleosynthesis in classical novae. We have searched the entire TGRS database for 1995-1997 for this line, with negative results. In principle such a search could yield an unbiased upper limit on the highly-uncertain Galactic nova rate. We carefully examined the times around the known nova events during this period, also with negative results. The upper limit on the nova line flux in a 6-hr interval is typically <3.8 E-3 photon/(cm2 s) at 4.6 sigma. We performed the same analysis for times around the outburst of Nova Vel 1999, obtaining a worse limit due to recent degradation of the detector response caused by cosmic ray induced damage., Comment: 5 pp. inc. 3 figs. The good energy resolution (3--4 keV FWHM) of the Transient Gamma Ray Spectrometer (TGRS) on board the WIND spacecraft makes it sensitive to Doppler-shifted outbursts of 511 keV electron-positron annihilation radiation, the reason being that the Doppler shift causes the cosmic line to be slightly offset from a strong instrumental background 511 keV line at rest, which is ubiquitous in space environments. Such a cosmic line (blueshifted) is predicted to arise in classical novae due to the annihilation of positrons from $\beta$-decay on a timescale of a few hours in an expanding envelope. A further advantage of TGRS - its broad field of view, containing the entire southern ecliptic hemisphere - has enabled us to make a virtually complete and unbiased 3-year search for classical novae at distances up to ~1 kpc. We present negative results of this search, and estimate its implications for the highly-uncertain Galactic classical nova rate and for future space missions., Comment: 22 pp. + 3 figs

We have obtained spectra of the Galactic center at energies 400-600 keV from high-resolution data acquired by the TGRS Ge spectrometer on board the WIND mission during 1995-1997. The data were obtained using an on-board occulter, and are relatively free from systematics and backgrounds. Analysis of the spectra reveals a well-resolved electron-positron annihilation line at 511 keV and the associated continuum due to annihilation via positronium formation. Measurements of the line width and the line-to-continuum ratio allow some constraints to be placed on the interstellar sites where annihilation occurs., Comment: 20 pp., 4 figs. Ap. J.
