The flexible Heliac coil set of helical axis stellarator H-1 (R=1m,
~0.15-0.2 m) permits access to a wide range of magnetic configurations. Surprisingly, in the absence of any obvious population of energetic particles, Alfven modes normally associated with energetic populations in larger fusion experiments are observed. Using H-1's unique combination of flexibility and advanced diagnostics, RF-generated plasma in H-1 is shown to have a very complex dependence on configuration of both the electron density and fluctuations in the MHD Alfven range. Magnetic fluctuations range from highly coherent, often multi-frequency, to approaching broad-band (df/f ~ 0.02-0.5), in the range 1-200 kHz. Application of datamining techniques to a wide range of configurations classifies these fluctuations and extracts poloidal and toroidal mode numbers, revealing that a significant class of fluctuations exhibit scaling which is i) Alfvenic with electron density (within a constant factor) and ii) shear Alfvenic in rotational transform. This is confirmed by scans within a single pulse, which can follow mode conversions. An array of optical and interferometric diagnostics is combined with the magnetic probe arrays to provide initial information on the internal structure of the MHD modes, and associated 3D effects. The configurational dependence is closely related to the presence of low order rational surfaces; density falls to very low values near, but not precisely at these rational values. Results from a uniquely accurate magnetic field mapping system, combined with a comprehensive model of the vacuum magnetic field in H-1 show that magnetic islands should not dominate the confinement of the configuration, and indicate that the dependence of density on configuration may be attributable to plasma generation effects., Comment: Expanded form of paper Ex/P9-11 presented at the 22nd IAEA Fusion Energy Conference, Geneva, Switzerland, 2008, and submitted to Nuclear Fusion for Publication - Published

- Abstract
We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases.

Research on magnetic confinement of high-temperature plasmas has the ultimate goal of harnessing nuclear fusion for the production of electricity. Although the tokamak1 is the leading toroidal magnetic-confinement concept, it is not without shortcomings and the fusion community has therefore also pursued alternative concepts such as the stellarator. Unlike axisymmetric tokamaks, stellarators possess a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field geometry. The availability of this additional dimension opens up an extensive configuration space for computational optimization of both the field geometry itself and the current-carrying coils that produce it. Such an optimization was undertaken in designing Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X)2, a large helical-axis advanced stellarator (HELIAS), which began operation in 2015 at Greifswald, Germany. A major drawback of 3D magnetic field geometry, however, is that it introduces a strong temperature dependence into the stellarator’s non-turbulent ‘neoclassical’ energy transport. Indeed, such energy losses will become prohibitive in high-temperature reactor plasmas unless a strong reduction of the geometrical factor associated with this transport can be achieved; such a reduction was therefore a principal goal of the design of W7-X. In spite of the modest heating power currently available, W7-X has already been able to achieve high-temperature plasma conditions during its 2017 and 2018 experimental campaigns, producing record values of the fusion triple product for such stellarator plasmas3,4. The triple product of plasma density, ion temperature and energy confinement time is used in fusion research as a figure of merit, as it must attain a certain threshold value before net-energy-producing operation of a reactor becomes possible1,5. Here we demonstrate that such record values provide evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in W7-X, as the plasma profiles that produced these results could not have been obtained in stellarators lacking a comparably high level of neoclassical optimization., Previously documented record values of the fusion triple product in the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X are shown to be evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in this optimized device.

In the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, the main locations of particle sources are expected to be the carbon divertors, baffles and graphite heat shield first wall. In this paper, the heat shield is implemented in EMC3-EIRENE to understand the expected areas and magnitudes of the recycling flux to this component. It is found that in the simulation the heat shield is not a significant source of recycling neutrals. The areas of simulated recycling flux are shown to correlate well with footprints of plasma-wetting seen in post-experimental campaign in-vessel inspection photos. EMC3-EIRENE reconstruction of line-integrated H-alpha measurements at the heat shield indicate that the majority of emission does not come from local recycling neutrals. Rather, the H-alpha signals at the heat shield are dominated by ionization of neutrals which have leaked from the divertor/baffle region into the midplane. The magnitude of the H-alpha line emission from the synthetic reconstruction is consistent with the experiment, indicating that a large overestimation of heat shield recycling would occur if these measurements were assumed to be from local recycling sources. In the future, it may be possible to obtain some information of local recycling from the heat shield since it was found that the majority of the recycling flux occurs on two well-localized areas.

- Abstract
This document is the product of a stellarator community workshop, organized by the National Stellarator Coordinating Committee and referred to as Stellcon, that was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in February 2016, hosted by MIT. The workshop was widely advertised, and was attended by 40 scientists from 12 different institutions including national labs, universities and private industry, as well as a representative from the Department of Energy. The final section of this document describes areas of community wide consensus that were developed as a result of the discussions held at that workshop. Areas where further study would be helpful to generate a consensus path forward for the US stellarator program are also discussed. The program outlined in this document is directly responsive to many of the strategic priorities of FES as articulated in “Fusion Energy Sciences: A Ten-Year Perspective (2015–2025)” [1]. The natural disruption immunity of the stellarator directly addresses “Elimination of transient events that can be deleterious to toroidal fusion plasma confinement devices” an area of critical importance for the US fusion energy sciences enterprise over the next decade. Another critical area of research “Strengthening our partnerships with international research facilities,” is being significantly advanced on the W7-X stellarator in Germany and serves as a test-bed for development of successful international collaboration on ITER. This report also outlines how materials science as it relates to plasma and fusion sciences, another critical research area, can be carried out effectively in a stellarator. Additionally, significant advances along two of the Research Directions outlined in the report; “Burning Plasma Science: Foundations—Next-generation research capabilities”, and “Burning Plasma Science: Long pulse—Sustainment of Long-Pulse Plasma Equilibria” are proposed.

551 ,Wenlock graptolite biozones - Abstract
Detailed field mapping and palaeontological collecting have revealed a complete sequence of Wenlock graptolite biozones around Builth. Bio-stratigraphical work has greatly improved the correlation with other British and European successions. The flexilis Zone, of wider international value, replaces the linnarssoni Zone, and eight subzones are suggested. The earliest Wenlock records the diachronous transgression across the Ordovician inlier. The centrifugus Zone, well developed in the W, thins to the E to a condensed horizon - the Acidaspis Bed- on the inlier. Calcareous mudstone slide deposits occur at four levels: in the rigidus; flexilis; ellesae; and nassa-ludensis zones. The Builth Mudstone Formation (formerly the Wenlock shales) comprises dark, laminated, silty mudstones deposited by hemipelagic processes under largely anoxic bottom conditions. The slide deposits reflected slope failure, possibly generated by fault-related seismic events. The Wenlock strata were greatly folded and then cut by a series of NE-SW trending faults forming the eastern boundary to the Pontesford Lineament. Some faults probably had a strike-slip displacement, others are possibly reactivated basement structures. Deformation and metamorphism are weak, and cleavage is localised to fault zones. Graptolite reflectivity indicates the zeolite- diagenetic grade. The intensity of cleavage and metamorphism increases northwestwards into the Pontesford Lineament. A review of early Palaeozoic and Wenlock palaeo- geography, - climatology, -oceanography, and -biogeography was undertaken. The causes of anoxia in the Wenlock Welsh basin were examined in the light of new Caledonian plate tectonic models. A correlation between graptolite occurrence and inferred sites of upwelling was shown. Three poorly defined graptolite subprovinces were established, which were probably caused by oceanographic and climatic effects. Systematic palaeontological studies have clarified the Monograptus flemingii and Monoclimacis vomerina subspecies, the Monograptus antennularius-retroflexus species, the genus Cyrtograptus, and the retoilitid group. The genus Plectograptus was divided, with a new genus Maculagraptus proposed.

Wendelstein 7-X is the first comprehensively optimized stellarator aiming at good confinement with plasma parameters relevant to a future stellarator power plant. Plasma operation started in 2015 using a limiter configuration. After installing an uncooled magnetic island divertor, extending the energy limit from 4 to 80 MJ, operation continued in 2017. For this phase, the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) capability was extended to 7 MW, and hydrogen pellet injection was implemented. The enhancements resulted in the highest triple product (6.5 × 1019 keV m-3 s) achieved in a stellarator until now. Plasma conditions [Te(0) ≈ Ti(0) ≈ 3.8 keV, τE > 200 ms] already were in the stellarator reactor-relevant ion-root plasma transport regime. Stable operation above the 2nd harmonic ECRH X-mode cutoff was demonstrated, which is instrumental for achieving high plasma densities in Wendelstein 7-X. Further important developments include the confirmation of low intrinsic error fields, the observation of current-drive induced instabilities, and first fast ion heating and confinement experiments. The efficacy of the magnetic island divertor was instrumental in achieving high performance in Wendelstein 7-X. Symmetrization of the heat loads between the ten divertor modules could be achieved by external resonant magnetic fields. Full divertor power detachment facilitated the extension of high power plasmas significantly beyond the energy limit of 80 MJ.

29th Symposium on Fusion Technology (SOFT), Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC, SEP 05-09, 2016; International audience; The WEST platform consists in a major upgrade of Tore Supra towards a steady-state tungsten (W) diverted tokamak. In support of this, significant developments are performed on the measurement systems (diagnostics); the control, data access and communication (CODAC); the plasma control system (PCS), the monitoring and protection of the first wall and modelling to prepare the restart of the plasma. Thanks to collaboration agreements already in force, most of the developments and some hardware procurements are performed with the help of several international partners. This paper discusses the present status of developments regarding the measurements and control for the WEST project. In particular, the integration of about 50 diagnostics in ports is completed, and their in-vessel and ex-vessel installation is underway. The refurbishment of the CODAC network architecture has been completed. The development of the new acquisition units based on PXI and of the Plasma Control System (PCS) is ongoing and some units are already available. In parallel, to prepare the plasma restart, the development of plasma magnetic and kinetic controllers has been performed on simplified plant and actuator models and plasma models. MAGNETIC field effects ,FUEL cycle ,FUSION reactors ,GAS fields ,PARTIAL pressure ,WASTE gases - Abstract
Fusion reactors and long pulse fusion experiments heavily depend on a continuous fuel cycle, which requires detailed monitoring of exhaust gases. We have used a diagnostic residual gas analyzer (DRGA) built as a prototype for ITER and integrated it on the most advanced stellarator fusion experiment, Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X). The DRGA was equipped with a sampling tube and assessed for gas time of flight sample response, effects of magnetic field on gas detection and practical aspects of use in a state of the art fusion environment. The setup was successfully commissioned and operated and was used to observe the gas composition of W7-X exhaust gases. The measured time of flight gas response was found to be in the order of a second for a 7 m sample tube. High values of magnetic field were found to affect the partial pressure readings of the DRGA and suggest that additional shielding is necessary in future experimental campaigns. - Abstract
After completing the main construction phase of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) and successfully commissioning the device, first plasma operation started at the end of 2015. Integral commissioning of plasma start-up and operation using electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) and an extensive set of plasma diagnostics have been completed, allowing initial physics studies during the first operational campaign. Both in helium and hydrogen, plasma breakdown was easily achieved. Gaining experience with plasma vessel conditioning, discharge lengths could be extended gradually. Eventually, discharges lasted up to 6 s, reaching an injected energy of 4 MJ, which is twice the limit originally agreed for the limiter configuration employed during the first operational campaign. At power levels of 4 MW central electron densities reached 3 1019 m-3, central electron temperatures reached values of 7 keV and ion temperatures reached just above 2 keV. Important physics studies during this first operational phase include a first assessment of power balance and energy confinement, ECRH power deposition experiments, 2nd harmonic O-mode ECRH using multi-pass absorption, and current drive experiments using electron cyclotron current drive. As in many plasma discharges the electron temperature exceeds the ion temperature significantly, these plasmas are governed by core electron root confinement showing a strong positive electric field in the plasma centre.

- Abstract
We summarise results of a theoretical study investigating the distinct convective instability properties of steady boundary-layer flow over rough rotating disks. A generic roughness pattern of concentric circles with sinusoidal surface undulations in the radial direction is considered. The goal is to compare predictions obtained by means of two alternative, and fundamentally different, modelling approaches for surface roughness for the first time. The motivating rationale is to identify commonalities and isolate results that might potentially represent artefacts associated with the particular methodologies underlying one of the two modelling approaches. The most significant result of practical relevance obtained is that both approaches predict overall stabilising effects on type I instability mode of rotating disk flow. This mode leads to transition of the rotating-disk boundary layer and, more generally, the transition of boundary-layers with a cross-flow profile. Stabilisation of the type 1 mode means that it may be possible to exploit surface roughness for laminar-flow control in boundary layers with a cross-flow component. However, we also find differences between the two sets of model predictions, some subtle and some substantial. These will represent criteria for establishing which of the two alternative approaches is more suitable to correctly describe experimental data when these become available., QC 20160520

The edge magnetic structure in the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX) and Wendelstein 7X (W7-X) stellarators has been shown to have a significant impact on the particle fueling and exhaust of the plasma main species (hydrogen) as well as impurity helium. For HSX, the plasma sourcing to exhaust ratio, quantified by the effective and global particle confinement times τ p * and τ p , H , respectively, increases when a magnetic island chain is located in the plasma edge. The fueling efficiency is reduced by 25% when the plasma boundary is deformed by the magnetic islands. The X-point geometry also yields higher plasma temperatures in front of the main recycling region. When the island is moved radially inward, both τ p * and
τ decrease by 10 % – 25 % depending on plasma density. The τ p , H results rely heavily on EMC3-EIRENE modeling which confirms reduced fueling efficiency due to more rapid ionization in the outward shifted island position. These findings suggest that for a helically optimized system like HSX, the plasma fueling from the recycling source, as well as from active gas injection, can be controlled by the magnetic island chain in the plasma edge—which is a basic requirement for a divertor system. This process is also effective for the control of effective helium exhaust times, as τ p , H e * measured by perturbative gas puff experiments is reduced by up to 40% when the islands are shifted inwards. For Wendelstein 7-X, a similar reduction of τ p , H e * was inferred when magnetic islands were moved from the far plasma edge into the confined plasma region. However, the effective confinement features of H as the main plasma species were not affected due to the non-optimal position of the magnetic islands with respect to the highly localized ionization domain during the limiter startup campaign. The International Stellarator/Heliotron Confinement Database was extended by high-β data compiled from the Large Helical System (LHD) and the W7-AS Stellarator. The main purpose is to enhance the basis for extrapolation of the global confinement properties to the reactor regime. The high-β configurations and experimental achievements in both devices are briefly described. The impact of beta on the configuration parameters and the global confinement is discussed. In particular, the confinement data in the high-β regime are compared with the ISS95 and ISS04 scaling laws which were derived from a database including relatively few high-β cases. In addition, a Bayesian model comparison approach is used to test scaling predictions derived from basic confinement models. Unlike in tokamaks, the operational boundaries in stellarators and helical systems are determined by the available heating power and confinement properties rather than by disruptive stability or density limits. The role of a pressure induced equilibrium limit is discussed in particular. An attempt is made to compare the high-β data with tokamak confinement and with operational boundaries observed in tokamaks. Further extensions of the database by parameters characterizing stability and local transport properties are proposed.
