Supercontinuum generation in the ultraviolet spectral region is challenging in solid-core optical fibres due to solarization and photodarkening. Antiresonant hollow-core fibres have overcome this limitation and have been shown to guide ultraviolet light at sufficient intensity for ultraviolet spectral broadening through nonlinear optics in the filling gas. However, their ultraviolet guidance is usually limited by discontinuities caused by the presence of high-loss resonance bands. In this paper, we report on resonance-free supercontinuum generation spanning from the deep ultraviolet to the near infrared achieved through modulation instability in an argon-filled antiresonant hollow-core fibre. The fibre was directly fabricated using the stack-and-draw method with a wall thickness of approximately 90 nm, enabling continuous spectral coverage from the deep ultraviolet to the near infrared. We also report numerical simulations to investigate the supercontinuum bandwidth and the factors limiting it, finding that the overall dispersion landscape, and associated group-velocity matching of cross-phase modulation interactions, is the dominant constraint on spectral extension.

The next generation of cosmological spectroscopic sky surveys will probe the distribution of matter across several Gigaparsecs (Gpc) or many billion light-years. In order to leverage the rich data in these new maps to gain a better understanding of the physics that shapes the large-scale structure of the cosmos, observed matter distributions must be compared to simulated mock skies. Small mock skies can be produced using precise, physics-driven hydrodynamical simulations. However, the need to capture small, kpc-scale density fluctuations in the intergalactic medium (IGM) places tight restrictions on the necessary minimum resolution of these simulations. Even on the most powerful supercomputers, it is impossible to run simulations of such high resolution in volumes comparable to what will be probed by future surveys, due to the vast quantity of data needed to store such a simulation in computer memory. However, it is possible to represent the essential features of these high-resolution simulations using orders of magnitude less memory. We present a hybrid approach that employs a physics-driven hydrodynamical simulation at a much lower-than-necessary resolution, followed by a data-driven, deep-learning Enhancement. This hybrid approach allows us to produce hydrodynamic mock skies that accurately capture small, kpc-scale features in the IGM but which span hundreds of Megaparsecs. We have produced such a volume which is roughly one Gigaparsec in diameter and examine its relevant large-scale statistical features, emphasizing certain properties that could not be captured by previous smaller simulations. We present this hydrodynamic volume as well as a companion n-body dark matter simulation and halo catalog which we are making publically available to the community for use in calibrating data pipelines for upcoming survey analyses.

Persistent homology (PH) studies the topology of data across multiple scales by building nested collections of topological spaces called filtrations, computing homology and returning an algebraic object that can be vizualised as a barcode--a multiset of intervals. The barcode is stable and interpretable, leading to applications within mathematics and data science. We study the spaces of point clouds with the same barcode by connecting persistence with real algebraic geometry and rigidity theory. Utilizing a semi-algebraic setup of point cloud persistence, we give lower and upper bounds on its dimension and provide combinatorial conditions in terms of the local and global rigidity properties of graphs associated with point clouds and filtrations. We prove that for generic point clouds in $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d \geq 2$), a point cloud is identifiable up to isometry from its VR persistence if the associated graph is globally rigid, and locally identifiable up to isometry from its \v{C}ech persistence if the associated hypergraph is rigid., Comment: 33 pages, 8 figures

The Simons Observatory is a ground-based telescope array located at an elevation of 5200 meters, in the Atacama Desert in Chile, designed to measure the temperature and polarization of the cosmic microwave background. It comprises four telescopes: three 0.42-meter small aperture telescopes (SATs), focused on searching for primordial gravitational waves, and one 6-meter large aperture telescope, focused on studying small-scale perturbations. Each of the SATs will field over 12,000 TES bolometers, with two SATs sensitive to both 90 and 150GHz frequency bands (SAT-MF1, and SAT-MF2), while the third SAT is sensitive to 220 and 280GHz frequency bands. Prior to its deployment in 2023, the optical properties of SAT-MF1 were characterized in the laboratory. We report on measurements of near-field beam maps acquired using a thermal source along with measurements using a holographic method that enables characterization of the amplitude and phase of the beam response, yielding an estimate of the far-field radiation pattern received by SAT-MF1. We find that the near-field half-width-half-maximum (HWHM) requirements are met across the focal plane array for the 90GHz frequency band, and through most of the focal plane array for the 150GHz frequency band. The mean of the bandpass averaged HWHM of the edge-detector focal plane modules match the simulated HWHM to 10.4%, with the discrepancy caused by fringing in the simulation. The measured beam profiles match simulations to within 2dB from the beam center to at least the -10dB level. Holography estimates of the far-field 90GHz beams match the full-width-half-maximum from simulation within 1%, and the beam profiles deviate by less than 2dB inside the central lobe. The success of the holography and thermal beam map experiments confirmed the optical performance was sufficient to meet the science requirements. Directed graphs can be studied by their associated directed flag complex. The homology of this complex has been successful in applications as a topological invariant for digraphs. Through comparison with path homology theory, we derive a homotopy-like equivalence relation on digraph maps such that equivalent maps induce identical maps on the homology of the directed flag complex. Thus, we obtain an equivalence relation on digraphs such that equivalent digraphs have directed flag complexes with isomorphic homology. With the help of these relations, we can prove a generic stability theorem for the persistent homology of the directed flag complex of filtered digraphs. In particular, we show that the persistent homology of the directed flag complex of the shortest-path filtration of a weighted directed acyclic graph is stable to edge subdivision. In contrast, we also discuss some important instabilities that are not present in persistent path homology. We also derive similar equivalence relations for ordered simplicial complexes at large. Since such complexes can alternatively be viewed as simplicial sets, we verify that these two perspectives yield identical relations.

Automated Market Makers (AMMs) hold assets and are constantly being rebalanced by external arbitrageurs to match external market prices. Loss-versus-rebalancing (LVR) is a pivotal metric for measuring how an AMM pool performs for its liquidity providers (LPs) relative to an idealised benchmark where rebalancing is done not via the action of arbitrageurs but instead by trading with a perfect centralised exchange with no fees, spread or slippage. This renders it an imperfect tool for judging rebalancing efficiency between execution platforms. We introduce Rebalancing-versus-rebalancing (RVR), a higher-fidelity model that better captures the frictions present in centralised rebalancing. We perform a battery of experiments comparing managing a portfolio on AMMs vs this new and more realistic centralised exchange benchmark-RVR. We are also particularly interested in dynamic AMMs that run strategies beyond fixed weight allocations-Temporal Function Market Makers. This is particularly important for asset managers evaluating execution management systems. In this paper we simulate more than 1000 different strategies settings as well as testing hundreds of different variations in centralised exchange (CEX) fees, AMM fees & gas costs. We find that, under this modeling approach, AMM pools (even with no retail/noise traders) often offer superior execution and rebalancing efficiency compared to centralised rebalancing, for all but the lowest CEX fee levels. We also take a simple approach to model noise traders & find that even a small amount of noise volume increases modeled AMM performance such that CEX rebalancing finds it hard to compete. This indicates that decentralised AMM-based asset management can offer superior performance and execution management for asset managers looking to rebalance portfolios, offering an alternative use case for dynamic AMMs beyond core liquidity providing.

Regular remote sensing of the magnetic field embedded within the million-degree solar corona is severely lacking. This reality impedes fundamental investigations of the nature of coronal heating, the generation of solar and stellar winds, and the impulsive release of energy into the solar system via flares and other eruptive phenomena. Resulting from advancements in large aperture solar coronagraphy, we report unprecedented maps of polarized spectra emitted at 1074 nm by Fe+12 atoms in the active corona. We detect clear signatures of the Zeeman effect that are produced by the coronal magnetic field along the optically thin path length of its formation. Our comparisons with global magnetohydrodynamic models highlight the valuable constraints that these measurements provide for coronal modeling efforts, which are anticipated to yield subsequent benefits for space weather research and forecasting., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, published in Science Advances

We use the Atacama Large sub/Millimetre Array (ALMA) to efficiently observe spectral lines across Bands 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 at high-resolution (0.5" - 0.1") for 16 bright southern Herschel sources at $1.5 < z < 4.2$. With only six and a half hours of observations, we reveal 66 spectral lines in 17 galaxies. These observations detect emission from CO (3-2) to CO(18-17), as well as atomic ([CI](1-0), (2-1), [OI] 145 $\mu$m and [NII] 205 $\mu$m) lines. Additional molecular lines are seen in emission (${\rm H_2O}$ and ${\rm H_2O^+}$) and absorption (OH$^+$ and CH$^+$). The morphologies based on dust continuum ranges from extended sources to strong lensed galaxies with magnifications between 2 and 30. CO line transitions indicate a diverse set of excitation conditions with a fraction of the sources ($\sim 35$%) showcasing dense, warm gas. The resolved gas to star-formation surface densities vary strongly per source, and suggest that the observed diversity of dusty star-forming galaxies could be a combination of lensed, compact dusty starbursts and extended, potentially-merging galaxies. The predicted gas depletion timescales are consistent with 100 Myr to 1 Gyr, but require efficient fueling from the extended gas reservoirs onto the more central starbursts, in line with the Doppler-shifted absorption lines that indicate inflowing gas for two out of six sources. This pilot paper explores a successful new method of observing spectral lines in large samples of galaxies, supports future studies of larger samples, and finds that the efficiency of this new observational method will be further improved with the planned ALMA Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 42 pages, including 20 figures + spectra. Streamflow, vital for water resource management, is governed by complex hydrological systems involving intermediate processes driven by meteorological forces. While deep learning models have achieved state-of-the-art results of streamflow prediction, their end-to-end single-task learning approach often fails to capture the causal relationships within these systems. To address this, we propose Hierarchical Conditional Multi-Task Learning (HCMTL), a hierarchical approach that jointly models soil water and snowpack processes based on their causal connections to streamflow. HCMTL utilizes task embeddings to connect network modules, enhancing flexibility and expressiveness while capturing unobserved processes beyond soil water and snowpack. It also incorporates the Conditional Mini-Batch strategy to improve long time series modeling. We compare HCMTL with five baselines on a global dataset. HCMTL's superior performance across hundreds of drainage basins over extended periods shows that integrating domain-specific causal knowledge into deep learning enhances both prediction accuracy and interpretability. This is essential for advancing our understanding of complex hydrological systems and supporting efficient water resource management to mitigate natural disasters like droughts and floods.

Generalizing a result of Berndtsson and Charpentier, we provide sufficient conditions for $L^2$ Sobolev regularity of the Bergman projection acting on $L^2$ sections of a holomorphic line bundle restricted to a relatively compact domain with Lipschitz boundary in a Hermitian manifold. We provide examples to show that our methods work for domains in Hopf manifolds endowed with a suitable Hermitian metric.

One of the most challenging problems in the computational study of localization in quantum manybody systems is to capture the effects of rare events, which requires sampling over exponentially many disorder realizations. We implement an efficient procedure on a quantum processor, leveraging quantum parallelism, to efficiently sample over all disorder realizations. We observe localization without disorder in quantum many-body dynamics in one and two dimensions: perturbations do not diffuse even though both the generator of evolution and the initial states are fully translationally invariant. The disorder strength as well as its density can be readily tuned using the initial state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of our platform by measuring Renyi entropies. Our method could also be extended to higher moments of the physical observables and disorder learning.

HCI research to date has only scratched the surface of the unique approaches racially minoritized communities take to building, designing, and using technology systems. While there has been an increase in understanding how people across racial groups create community across different platforms, there is still a lack of studies that explicitly center on how Black technologists design with and for their own communities. In this paper, we present findings from a series of semi-structured interviews with Black technologists who have used, created, or curated resources to support lived Black experiences. From their experiences, we find a multifaceted approach to design as a means of survival, to stay connected, for cultural significance, and to bask in celebratory joy. Further, we provide considerations that emphasize the need for centering lived Black experiences in design and share approaches that can empower the broader research community to conduct further inquiries into design focused on those in the margins., Comment: 15 pages, 2 tables

Generative AI, in particular large transformer models, are increasingly driving HPC system design in science and industry. We analyze performance characteristics of such transformer models and discuss their sensitivity to the transformer type, parallelization strategy, and HPC system features (accelerators and interconnects). We utilize a performance model that allows us to explore this complex design space and highlight its key components. We find that different transformer types demand different parallelism and system characteristics at different training regimes. Large Language Models are performant with 3D parallelism and amplify network needs only at pre-training scales with reduced dependence on accelerator capacity and bandwidth. On the other hand, long-sequence transformers, representative of scientific foundation models, place a more uniform dependence on network and capacity with necessary 4D parallelism. Our analysis emphasizes the need for closer performance modeling of different transformer types keeping system features in mind and demonstrates a path towards this. This paper illustrates a further application of topological data analysis to the study of self-organising models for chemical and biological systems. In particular, we investigate whether topological summaries can capture the parameter dependence of pattern topology in reaction diffusion systems, by examining the homology of sublevel sets of solutions to Turing reaction diffusion systems for a range of parameters. We demonstrate that a topological clustering algorithm can reveal how pattern topology depends on parameters, using the chlorite--iodide--malonic acid system, and the prototypical Schnakenberg system for illustration. In addition, we discuss the prospective application of such clustering, for instance in refining priors for detailed parameter estimation for self-organising systems., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures

Observed magnitudes of Qianfan spacecraft range from 4 when they are near zenith to 8 when low in the sky. Nearly all of the observations can be modeled with a nadir-facing flat antenna panel and the underside of a zenith-facing solar array, both with Lambertian reflectance properties. These satellites will impact astronomical research unless their brightness is reduced.

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) can be employed to understand a wide range of phenomena, from elementary particle scattering in high-energy physics to effective descriptions of many-body interactions in materials. Studying dynamical properties of emergent phases can be challenging as it requires solving many-body problems that are generally beyond perturbative limits. We investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT using a two-dimensional lattice of superconducting qubits. We first construct a simple variational circuit which prepares low-energy states that have a large overlap with the ground state; then we create particles with local gates and simulate their quantum dynamics via a discretized time evolution. As the effective magnetic field is increased, our measurements show signatures of transitioning from deconfined to confined dynamics. For confined excitations, the magnetic field induces a tension in the string connecting them. Our method allows us to experimentally image string dynamics in a (2+1)D LGT from which we uncover two distinct regimes inside the confining phase: for weak confinement the string fluctuates strongly in the transverse direction, while for strong confinement transverse fluctuations are effectively frozen. In addition, we demonstrate a resonance condition at which dynamical string breaking is facilitated. Our LGT implementation on a quantum processor presents a novel set of techniques for investigating emergent particle and string dynamics.

The human visual system is well-tuned to detect faces of all shapes and sizes. While this brings obvious survival advantages, such as a better chance of spotting unknown predators in the bush, it also leads to spurious face detections. ``Face pareidolia'' describes the perception of face-like structure among otherwise random stimuli: seeing faces in coffee stains or clouds in the sky. In this paper, we study face pareidolia from a computer vision perspective. We present an image dataset of ``Faces in Things'', consisting of five thousand web images with human-annotated pareidolic faces. Using this dataset, we examine the extent to which a state-of-the-art human face detector exhibits pareidolia, and find a significant behavioral gap between humans and machines. We find that the evolutionary need for humans to detect animal faces, as well as human faces, may explain some of this gap. Finally, we propose a simple statistical model of pareidolia in images. Through studies on human subjects and our pareidolic face detectors we confirm a key prediction of our model regarding what image conditions are most likely to induce pareidolia. We report the fabrication and characterisation of a multi-core anti-resonant hollow core fibre with low inter-core coupling. The optical losses were 0.03 and 0.08 dB/m at 620 and 1000 nm respectively, while the novel structure provides new insights into hollow core fibre design and fabrication.

Quantum error correction provides a path to reach practical quantum computing by combining multiple physical qubits into a logical qubit, where the logical error rate is suppressed exponentially as more qubits are added. However, this exponential suppression only occurs if the physical error rate is below a critical threshold. In this work, we present two surface code memories operating below this threshold: a distance-7 code and a distance-5 code integrated with a real-time decoder. The logical error rate of our larger quantum memory is suppressed by a factor of $\Lambda$ = 2.14 $\pm$ 0.02 when increasing the code distance by two, culminating in a 101-qubit distance-7 code with 0.143% $\pm$ 0.003% error per cycle of error correction. This logical memory is also beyond break-even, exceeding its best physical qubit's lifetime by a factor of 2.4 $\pm$ 0.3. We maintain below-threshold performance when decoding in real time, achieving an average decoder latency of 63 $\mu$s at distance-5 up to a million cycles, with a cycle time of 1.1 $\mu$s. To probe the limits of our error-correction performance, we run repetition codes up to distance-29 and find that logical performance is limited by rare correlated error events occurring approximately once every hour, or 3 $\times$ 10$^9$ cycles. Storm-scale convection-allowing models (CAMs) are an important tool for predicting the evolution of thunderstorms and mesoscale convective systems that result in damaging extreme weather. By explicitly resolving convective dynamics within the atmosphere they afford meteorologists the nuance needed to provide outlook on hazard. Deep learning models have thus far not proven skilful at km-scale atmospheric simulation, despite being competitive at coarser resolution with state-of-the-art global, medium-range weather forecasting. We present a generative diffusion model called StormCast, which emulates the high-resolution rapid refresh (HRRR) model-NOAA's state-of-the-art 3km operational CAM. StormCast autoregressively predicts 99 state variables at km scale using a 1-hour time step, with dense vertical resolution in the atmospheric boundary layer, conditioned on 26 synoptic variables. We present evidence of successfully learnt km-scale dynamics including competitive 1-6 hour forecast skill for composite radar reflectivity alongside physically realistic convective cluster evolution, moist updrafts, and cold pool morphology. StormCast predictions maintain realistic power spectra for multiple predicted variables across multi-hour forecasts. Together, these results establish the potential for autoregressive ML to emulate CAMs -- opening up new km-scale frontiers for regional ML weather prediction and future climate hazard dynamical downscaling.

Studying low-likelihood high-impact extreme weather events in a warming world is a significant and challenging task for current ensemble forecasting systems. While these systems presently use up to 100 members, larger ensembles could enrich the sampling of internal variability. They may capture the long tails associated with climate hazards better than traditional ensemble sizes. Due to computational constraints, it is infeasible to generate huge ensembles (comprised of 1,000-10,000 members) with traditional, physics-based numerical models. In this two-part paper, we replace traditional numerical simulations with machine learning (ML) to generate hindcasts of huge ensembles. In Part I, we construct an ensemble weather forecasting system based on Spherical Fourier Neural Operators (SFNO), and we discuss important design decisions for constructing such an ensemble. The ensemble represents model uncertainty through perturbed-parameter techniques, and it represents initial condition uncertainty through bred vectors, which sample the fastest growing modes of the forecast. Using the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) as a baseline, we develop an evaluation pipeline composed of mean, spectral, and extreme diagnostics. Using large-scale, distributed SFNOs with 1.1 billion learned parameters, we achieve calibrated probabilistic forecasts. As the trajectories of the individual members diverge, the ML ensemble mean spectra degrade with lead time, consistent with physical expectations. However, the individual ensemble members' spectra stay constant with lead time. Therefore, these members simulate realistic weather states, and the ML ensemble thus passes a crucial spectral test in the literature. The IFS and ML ensembles have similar Extreme Forecast Indices, and we show that the ML extreme weather forecasts are reliable and discriminating.

In Part I, we created an ensemble based on Spherical Fourier Neural Operators. As initial condition perturbations, we used bred vectors, and as model perturbations, we used multiple checkpoints trained independently from scratch. Based on diagnostics that assess the ensemble's physical fidelity, our ensemble has comparable performance to operational weather forecasting systems. However, it requires several orders of magnitude fewer computational resources. Here in Part II, we generate a huge ensemble (HENS), with 7,424 members initialized each day of summer 2023. We enumerate the technical requirements for running huge ensembles at this scale. HENS precisely samples the tails of the forecast distribution and presents a detailed sampling of internal variability. For extreme climate statistics, HENS samples events 4$\sigma$ away from the ensemble mean. At each grid cell, HENS improves the skill of the most accurate ensemble member and enhances coverage of possible future trajectories. As a weather forecasting model, HENS issues extreme weather forecasts with better uncertainty quantification. It also reduces the probability of outlier events, in which the verification value lies outside the ensemble forecast distribution.

We have observed unexpected spectral attenuation of ultraviolet light in freshly drawn hollow core optical fibres. When the fibre ends are left open to atmosphere, this loss feature dissipates over time. The loss matches the absorption spectrum of gaseous (molecular) chlorine and, given enough time, the transmission spectrum of the fibre recovers to that expected from the morphological structure of the fibre. Our measurements indicate an initial chlorine concentration of 0.45 $\mu$ mol/cm$^{3}$ in the hollow core, equivalent to 1.1 mol% Cl$_{2}$ at atmospheric pressure.

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background experiment currently being deployed to Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The initial deployment of SO, consisting of three 0.46m-diameter small-aperture telescopes and one 6m-primary large-aperture telescope, will field over 60,000 transition-edge sensors that will observe at frequencies between 30 GHz and 280 GHz. SO will read out its detectors using Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) microwave-frequency multiplexing $\mu$mux, a form of frequency division multiplexing where an RF-SQUID couples each TES bolometer to a superconducting resonator tuned to a unique frequency. Resonator frequencies are spaced roughly every 2 MHz between 4 and 6 GHz, allowing for multiplexing factors on the order of 1000. One challenge of $\mu$mux is matching each tracked resonator with its corresponding physical detector. Variations in resonator fabrication, and frequency shifts between cooldowns caused by trapped flux can cause the measured resonance frequencies to deviate significantly from their designed values. In this study, we introduce a method for pairing measured and designed resonators by constructing a bipartite graph based on the two resonator sets, and assigning edge weights based on measured resonator and detector properties such as resonance frequency, detector pointing, and assigned bias lines. Finding the minimum-cost matching for a given set of edge weights is a well-studied problem that can be solved very quickly, and this matching tells us the best assignment of measured resonators to designed detectors for our input parameters. We will present results based on the first on-sky measurements from SAT1, the first SO MF small-aperture telescope.

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background experiment composed of three 0.42 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT) in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The Large Aperture Telescope Receiver (LATR) was integrated into the LAT in August 2023; however, because mirrors were not yet installed, the LATR optical chain was capped at the 4K stage. In this dark configuration we are able to characterize many elements of the instrument without contributions from atmospheric noise. Here we show this noise is below the required upper limit and its features are well described with a simple noise model. Maps produced using this noise model have properties that are in good agreement with the white noise levels of our dark data. Additionally, we show that our nominal scan strategy has a minimal effect on the noise when compared to the noise when the telescope is stationary

The recent inference of sulphur dioxide (SO$_2$) in the atmosphere of the hot ($\sim$1100 K), Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-39b from near-infrared JWST observations suggests that photochemistry is a key process in high temperature exoplanet atmospheres. This is due to the low ($<$1 ppb) abundance of SO$_2$ under thermochemical equilibrium, compared to that produced from the photochemistry of H$_2$O and H$_2$S (1-10 ppm). However, the SO$_2$ inference was made from a single, small molecular feature in the transmission spectrum of WASP-39b at 4.05 $\mu$m, and therefore the detection of other SO$_2$ absorption bands at different wavelengths is needed to better constrain the SO$_2$ abundance. Here we report the detection of SO$_2$ spectral features at 7.7 and 8.5 $\mu$m in the 5-12 $\mu$m transmission spectrum of WASP-39b measured by the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) Low Resolution Spectrometer (LRS). Our observations suggest an abundance of SO$_2$ of 0.5-25 ppm (1$\sigma$ range), consistent with previous findings. In addition to SO$_2$, we find broad water vapour absorption features, as well as an unexplained decrease in the transit depth at wavelengths longer than 10 $\mu$m. Fitting the spectrum with a grid of atmospheric forward models, we derive an atmospheric heavy element content (metallicity) for WASP-39b of $\sim$7.1-8.0 $\times$ solar and demonstrate that photochemistry shapes the spectra of WASP-39b across a broad wavelength range., Comment: Published in Nature

The BlueWalker 3 satellite is now fainter than during the first months after deployment. The greatest improvement is that the average maximum luminosity near zenith has been reduced from magnitude 1.0 to 2.2. However, the spacecraft is still usually bright enough to interfere with astronomical research.

The mean apparent magnitude of Starlink Mini Direct-To-Cell (DTC) satellites is 4.62 while the mean of magnitudes adjusted to a uniform distance of 1000 km is 5.50. DTCs average 4.9 times brighter than other Starlink Mini spacecraft at a common distance. We cannot currently separate the effects of the DTC antenna itself, the different attitude modes that may be required for DTC operations and to what extent brightness mitigation procedures were in place at the times of our observations. In a best case scenario, where DTC brightness mitigation is as successful as that for other Minis and the DTC antenna does not add significantly to brightness, we estimate that DTCs will be about 2.6 times as bright as the others based upon their lower altitudes. The DTCs spend a greater fraction of their time in the Earth's shadow than satellites at higher altitudes. That will offset some of their impact on astronomical observing.

Let $f(x)=x^4+ax^3+d\in {\mathbb Z}[x]$, where $ad\ne 0$. Let $C_n$ denote the cyclic group of order $n$, $D_4$ the dihedral group of order 8, and $A_4$ the alternating group of order 12. Assuming that $f(x)$ is monogenic, we give necessary and sufficient conditions involving only $a$ and $d$ to determine the Galois group $G$ of $f(x)$ over ${\mathbb Q}$. In particular, we show that $G=D_4$ if and only if $(a,d)=(\pm 2,2)$, and that $G\not \in \{C_4,C_2\times C_2\}$. Furthermore, we prove that $f(x)$ is monogenic with $G=A_4$ if and only if $a=4k$ and $d=27k^4+1$, where $k\ne 0$ is an integer such that $27k^4+1$ is squarefree. This article extends previous work of the authors on the monogenicity of quartic polynomials and their Galois groups.

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a Cosmic Microwave Background experiment located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. SO consists of three small aperture telescopes (SATs) and one large aperture telescope (LAT) with a total of 60,000 detectors in six frequency bands. As an observatory, SO encompasses hundreds of hardware components simultaneously running at different readout rates, all separate from its 60,000 detectors on-sky and their metadata. We provide an overview of commissioning SO's data acquisition software system for SAT-MF1, the first SAT deployed to the Atacama site. Additionally, we share insights from deploying data access software for all four telescopes, detailing how performance limitations affected data loading and quality investigations, which led to site-compatible software improvements., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. CMB-S4, the next-generation CMB observatory, will deploy hundreds of thousands of detectors to enable mapping the millimeter-wavelength sky with unprecedented speed. The large aperture telescopes for CMB-S4 consist of six-meter diameter crossed Dragone designs and a five-meter diameter three-mirror anastigmat. The two-mirror crossed Dragone design requires astigmatism corrections in the refractive optics to achieve diffraction-limited performance. We present biconic lens corrections for the CMB-S4 crossed Dragone camera optics and compare these designs to the camera optics for the three mirror anastigmat, as the optical designs of the cameras for these telescopes are being prototyped.

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a next-generation ground-based telescope located in the Atacama Desert in Chile, designed to map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with unprecedented precision. The observatory consists of three small aperture telescopes (SATs) and one large aperture telescope (LAT), each optimized for distinct but complementary scientific goals. To achieve these goals, optimized scan strategies have been defined for both the SATs and LAT. This paper describes a software system deployed in SO that effectively translates high-level scan strategies into realistic observing scripts executable by the telescope, taking into account realistic observational constraints. The data volume of SO also necessitates a scalable software infrastructure to support its daily data processing needs. Qubit decoherence unavoidably degrades the fidelity of quantum logic gates. Accordingly, realizing gates that are as fast as possible is a guiding principle for qubit control, necessitating protocols for mitigating error channels that become significant as gate time is decreased. One such error channel arises from the counter-rotating component of strong, linearly polarized drives. This error channel is particularly important when gate times approach the qubit Larmor period and represents the dominant source of infidelity for sufficiently fast single-qubit gates with low-frequency qubits such as fluxonium. In this work, we develop and demonstrate two complementary protocols for mitigating this error channel. The first protocol realizes circularly polarized driving in circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) through simultaneous charge and flux control. The second protocol -- commensurate pulses -- leverages the coherent and periodic nature of counter-rotating fields to regularize their contributions to gates, enabling single-qubit gate fidelities reliably exceeding $99.997\%$. This protocol is platform independent and requires no additional calibration overhead. This work establishes straightforward strategies for mitigating counter-rotating effects from strong drives in circuit QED and other platforms, which we expect to be helpful in the effort to realize high-fidelity control for fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Understanding how interacting particles approach thermal equilibrium is a major challenge of quantum simulators. Unlocking the full potential of such systems toward this goal requires flexible initial state preparation, precise time evolution, and extensive probes for final state characterization. We present a quantum simulator comprising 69 superconducting qubits which supports both universal quantum gates and high-fidelity analog evolution, with performance beyond the reach of classical simulation in cross-entropy benchmarking experiments. Emulating a two-dimensional (2D) XY quantum magnet, we leverage a wide range of measurement techniques to study quantum states after ramps from an antiferromagnetic initial state. We observe signatures of the classical Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition, as well as strong deviations from Kibble-Zurek scaling predictions attributed to the interplay between quantum and classical coarsening of the correlated domains. This interpretation is corroborated by injecting variable energy density into the initial state, which enables studying the effects of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in targeted parts of the eigenspectrum. Finally, we digitally prepare the system in pairwise-entangled dimer states and image the transport of energy and vorticity during thermalization. These results establish the efficacy of superconducting analog-digital quantum processors for preparing states across many-body spectra and unveiling their thermalization dynamics.

We investigate the geometry of a family of log-linear statistical models called quasi-independence models. The toric fiber product is useful for understanding the geometry of parameter inference in these models because the maximum likelihood degree is multiplicative under the TFP. We define the coordinate toric fiber product, or cTFP, and give necessary and sufficient conditions under which a quasi-independence model is a cTFP of lower-order models. We show that the vanishing ideal of every 2-way quasi-independence model with ML-degree 1 can be realized as an iterated toric fiber product of linear ideals. We also classify which Lawrence lifts of 2-way quasi-independence models are cTFPs and give a necessary condition under which a $k$-way model has ML-degree 1 using its facial submodels.

Observations of Starlink V2 Mini satellites during orbit-raising suggest that SpaceX applies brightness mitigation when they reach a height of 357 km. The mean apparent magnitudes for objects below that height threshold is 2.68 while the mean for those above is 6.46. When magnitudes are adjusted to a uniform distance of 1000 km the means are 4.58 and 7.52, respectively. The difference of 2.94 between distance-adjusted magnitudes above and below threshold implies that mitigation is 93% effective in reducing the brightness of orbit-raising spacecraft. Orbit-raising Mini spacecraft have a smaller impact on astronomical observations than higher altitude on-station spacecraft because they are relatively few in number. They also spend less time traversing the sky and spend longer in the Earth's shadow. These low-altitude objects will be more out-of-focus in large telescopes such as the LSST which reduces their impact, too. However, they attract considerable public attention and airline pilots have reported them as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena.

Recent progress in the development and applications of microstructured optical fibres for quantum technologies is summarised. The optical nonlinearity of solid-core and gas-filled hollow-core fibres provides a valuable medium for the generation of quantum resource states, as well as for quantum frequency conversion between the operating wavelengths of existing quantum photonic material architectures. The low loss, low latency and low dispersion of hollow-core fibres make these fibres particularly attractive for both short- and long-distance links in quantum networks. Hollow-core fibres also promise to replace free-space optical components in a wide range of atomic experiments.

The Simons Observatory will map the temperature and polarization over half of the sky, at millimeter wavelengths in six spectral bands from the Atacama Desert in Chile. These data will provide new insights into the genesis, content, and history of our Universe; the astrophysics of galaxies and galaxy clusters; objects in our solar system; and time-varying astrophysical phenomena. This ambitious new instrument suite, initially comprising three 0.5 m small-aperture telescopes and one 6 m large aperture telescope, is designed using a common combination of new technologies and new implementations to realize an observatory significantly more capable than the previous generation. In this paper, we present the pre-deployment performance of the first mid-frequency "optics tube" which will be fielded on the large aperture telescope with sensitivity to the 90 and 150 GHz spectral bands. This optics tube contains lenses, filters, detectors, and readout components, all of which operate at cryogenic temperatures. It is one of seven that form the core of the large aperture telescope receiver in its initial deployment. We describe this optics tube, including details of comprehensive testing methods, new techniques for beam and passband characterization, and its measured performance. The performance metrics include beams, optical efficiency, passbands, and forecasts for the on-sky performance of the system. We forecast a sensitivity that exceeds the requirements of the large aperture telescope with greater than 30% margin in each spectral band, and predict that the instrument will realize diffraction-limited performance and the expected detector passbands.

Cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES) is a modern technique for high-precision energy spectroscopy, in which the energy of a charged particle in a magnetic field is measured via the frequency of the emitted cyclotron radiation. The He6-CRES collaboration aims to use CRES to probe beyond the standard model physics at the TeV scale by performing high-resolution and low-background beta-decay spectroscopy of ${}^6\textrm{He}$ and ${}^{19}\textrm{Ne}$. Having demonstrated the first observation of individual, high-energy (0.1 -- 2.5 MeV) positrons and electrons via their cyclotron radiation, the experiment provides a novel window into the radiation of relativistic charged particles in a waveguide via the time-derivative (slope) of the cyclotron radiation frequency, $\mathrm{d}f_\textrm{c}/\mathrm{d}t$. We show that analytic predictions for the total cyclotron radiation power emitted by a charged particle in circular and rectangular waveguides are approximately consistent with the Larmor formula, each scaling with the Lorentz factor of the underlying $e^\pm$ as $\gamma^4$. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) survey experiment that includes small-aperture telescopes (SATs) observing from an altitude of 5,200 m in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The SO SATs will cover six spectral bands between 27 and 280 GHz to search for primordial B-modes to a sensitivity of $\sigma(r)=0.002$, with quantified systematic errors well below this value. Each SAT is a self-contained cryogenic telescope with a 35$^\circ$ field of view, 42 cm diameter optical aperture, 40 K half-wave plate, 1 K refractive optics, and $<0.1$ K focal plane that holds $>12,000$ TES detectors. We describe the nominal design of the SATs and present details about the integration and testing for one operating at 93 and 145 GHz.

The rapid rise of deep learning (DL) in numerical weather prediction (NWP) has led to a proliferation of models which forecast atmospheric variables with comparable or superior skill than traditional physics-based NWP. However, among these leading DL models, there is a wide variance in both the training settings and architecture used. Further, the lack of thorough ablation studies makes it hard to discern which components are most critical to success. In this work, we show that it is possible to attain high forecast skill even with relatively off-the-shelf architectures, simple training procedures, and moderate compute budgets. Specifically, we train a minimally modified SwinV2 transformer on ERA5 data, and find that it attains superior forecast skill when compared against IFS. We present some ablations on key aspects of the training pipeline, exploring different loss functions, model sizes and depths, and multi-step fine-tuning to investigate their effect. We also examine the model performance with metrics beyond the typical ACC and RMSE, and investigate how the performance scales with model size., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures
