This research investigated the economic impacts resulting from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to the arboriculture/commercial urban forestry (ACUF) industry through a survey that was administered to practitioners – arborists and commercial urban foresters – throughout the New England states (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine) of the United States of America (USA). The responses by this sample of ACUF firms indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic period was one of strong income and employment growth for the industry fuelled in part by increased demand by private homeowners. This period saw growth for the ACUF industry, but firms from this sample also faced many of the same difficulties that other industries faced in relation to securing the labour they needed, as well as increases in costs related to wages, salaries, and health insurance. Whether these increases are short-term phenomena or longer-term shifts for the ACUF industry remains an important research question. Analysis of this segment of the broader "green industry" enables stakeholders and interested parties to educate legislators, regulatory decision-makers, and others about the importance of the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to the ACUF sector. - Abstract
The success of public trees planted in urban areas by tree planting initiatives (TPIs) depends on how well the new trees fit into existing municipal structures and capacities. We sought to understand municipal management of trees in mid-sized towns through a case study in Massachusetts (US) involving a state-funded and state-managed TPI. Data was collected through structured interviews with tree wardens (municipal urban forest managers) to understand the various impacts that maintenance practices, municipal support and funding, and departmental structure may have on recently planted trees. In this Massachusetts program, municipal structure influenced the number of proactive management practices as well as the size of the tree activity budget. Consideration of municipal department roles and structure by TPIs may allow for more effective implementation of these initiatives. Our study begins to fill a research gap regarding small to mid-size municipalities and their role in tree planting and maintenance.

28. Exploring urban forestry non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the eastern United States

- Abstract
ABSTRACTUrban forestry NGOs commenced gaining prominence in the socio-political landscape of the 20th century. Despite a dramatic increase in the number of urban forestry NGOs (50%) in recent decades, they are rarely described in the scientific literature, and they have not been investigated in any formal, systematic manner. Little is known about the origins of many of these organisations or how many formal urban forestry NGOs are presently active across the United States. Knowledge gaps persist pertaining to organisational structure, programming, and funding. To address these gaps in knowledge, this article presents findings from a survey of 81 urban forestry NGOs in the temperate forest region of the United States. We report on typical traits of urban forestry NGOs across five themes that include “origin”, “organisational structure”, “funding”, “partnerships”, and “programming”. Nearly 80% of respondents indicated that their urban forestry NGO has helped develop, shape, or implement policy in their community (e.g. tree policies & ordinances, urban forest master plans). An overwhelming majority of NGOs (90% and 83%, respectively) indicated that both private citizens and local departments were important collaborators. A vast majority of respondents (86%) indicated that their NGO routinely engages in planting trees and over 70% of urban forestry NGOs routinely participate in public events including Arbor Day celebrations and local tree giveaways. There is widespread variation regarding the size, composition, and even function of urban forestry NGOs.

Municipalities across the United States have varied available resources to manage urban forests, resulting in substantial differences in urban forestry services and outcomes. This article reviews 32 survey-based studies that characterize U.S. municipal urban forest management program dimensions, including program components; needs and barriers; knowledge of and attitudes toward urban forests; and plans and priorities for future management. Such information is critical for agencies that support local urban forest management efforts but has not previously been systematically gathered and condensed. Based on the limited national, regional, and state-level data published in peer-reviewed journals, we find that the number of municipal urban forestry programs appears to be increasing, many communities have at least one tree ordinance, and larger communities are more likely to have an official program. However, evidence suggests that few municipalities have an urban forest inventory or management plan, and most require additional financial, political, public, or educational support. More research on urban forestry program status, needed support, and local knowledge is needed as knowledge gaps remain regarding the influence of metropolitan areas and resident demographics on the presence and extent of municipal urban forestry programs. Additionally, few studies have investigated future municipal urban forestry-related intentions and priorities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Volunteer engagement in urban forestry in the United States: reviewing the literature

- Abstract
ABSTRACTThis article presents the results of a literature review related to volunteerism in urban forestry in the United States. Themes explored were inductively emergent from the research reviewed and included ‘volunteer demographics’, ‘motivations of volunteers’, ‘benefits of volunteering’, ‘volunteer engagement and barriers’, ‘value of volunteering’, and ‘volunteer recruitment and retention’. Urban forestry volunteers are often motivated by personal, social, and environmental considerations. Volunteers in urban forestry may not be representative of a cross-section of the communities that they are serving, rather they are often middle-aged, well-educated white women. Further research is required both to ascertain barriers to volunteerism and to enhance future volunteer recruitment and retainment efforts. Volunteers in the United States account for 5% of municipal tree care in urban forests – accounting for an estimated $35 million USD in value. Volunteers perform critical urban forestry-related tasks that aim to increase urban tree canopy cover through tree selection and planting efforts. Volunteers encourage urban tree survival by advocating for, as well as performing, important maintenance-related duties including the administration of supplemental watering and urban tree pruning. With proper training and support, volunteers may accurately perform important data collection efforts that may inform management decisions and urban tree care maintenance programmes.

- Abstract
ABSTRACTAmerican elm (Ulmus americana) is an important cultural and historic symbol of the North American landscape. Its graceful form and resilience to harsh growing conditions made it ideal for widespread planting as an urban tree. However, with the initial introduction of Dutch elm disease (Ophiostoma ulmi) to the United States in the late 1920ʹs, and the later appearance of the more virulent O. novo-ulmi, American elm populations commenced a sudden and precipitous decline due to mortality associated with Ophiostomaspp. The absence of this tree created a gap in riparian areas of native forests and resulted in a substantial reduction in urban tree canopy cover throughout communities of the United States and Canada. Here we highlight the prevalence of the American elm in the U.S., and the affiliated impacts of Dutch elm disease (DED). We also discuss important factors including mode of DED introduction and transmission, and challenges associated with DED management in the urban environment. Results from ongoing evaluation of putatively resistant American elms are detailed.
