This report presents selected findings from the 2020/22 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:20/22), a study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) within the U.S. Department of Education. The findings in this report are based on data about a nationally representative sample of all first-time beginning students (FTBs) who entered postsecondary education for the first time during the 2019-20 academic year. BPS:20/22 is the first follow-up of a cohort of FTBs originally identified during the 2019-20 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:20) and covers 3 years of students' experiences, from their first year of postsecondary education in the 2019-20 academic year through the 2021-22 academic year. The BPS:20/22 sample consisted of approximately 37,330 total students, representing the approximately 3.3 million undergraduates who were first-time postsecondary students enrolled in the 2019-20 academic year. Data from BPS can address questions about students' postsecondary enrollment patterns, continued enrollment in college, highest postsecondary credential earned, social and academic experiences and activities, and employment history. To facilitate analyses of student choices and postsecondary enrollment and credential attainment, the BPS:20/22 survey collected information on teacher effectiveness, as well as frequency and types of communication and interactions with family and friends, faculty members, and other students, which were also included in the NPSAS:20 survey. Additionally, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, several survey questions asked respondents to report on employment and education disruptions and personal experiences "as a result of the coronavirus pandemic" in spring 2020 and in the 2020-21 academic year. Respondents indicated their perception of whether an experience was the result of the coronavirus pandemic. The report provides information on first-time postsecondary students' attainment and persistence rates at any institution 3 years after they began postsecondary education, along with their education and personal experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this report, attainment represents the students' highest postsecondary credential earned, whereas persistence describes enrollment during the 2021-22 academic year for students who had not earned a postsecondary credential. As a result, students who earned a postsecondary credential and enrolled for additional postsecondary education are accounted for in attainment rates. It is important to note that BPS:20/22 data reflect first-time postsecondary students' experiences over 3 academic years, when many students are still working toward a postsecondary credential. The 2022/25 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study, which is designed to follow up with students 6 years after they began postsecondary education, will provide more comprehensive data about postsecondary attainment. This First Look shows some of the ways that BPS:20/22 data can be used. Selected findings are not intended to emphasize any particular issue, and the report does not discuss all the information presented in the tables. Readers should not infer causality from the data in this report. Although many of the factors discussed are related to each other, this report does not explore these relationships. The student- and institution-level factors in this report are just a few of the several hundred that will be available in the BPS:20/22 data.

This quasi-experimental study examined the effectiveness of a one-time emergency financial relief program among Pell Grant eligible undergraduate students in Spring 2015 pursuing their first bachelor's degree across academic and financial outcomes. The academic outcomes included retention to the next semester, degree completion, attempted credit hours, and grade point average. The financial outcome captured whether students received a stop registration hold due to an unpaid financial balance in the semester after receiving the emergency relief. The results reveal that financial relief applied to low-income students' accounts can improve their retention and graduation rates. The financial relief was most effective among first-generation college students, resulting in a complete elimination of the retention gap for first-generation students. The emergency relief did not improve GPA or substantially change the number of credits earned. A concerning finding was that students receiving this emergency support were more likely to receive a financial hold in a subsequent semester and that effect was stronger among students of color (Black/African American, Hispanic/Latine, Asian, Multiracial, American Indian/Alaska Native), males, and first-generation college students.

The Center for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP) developed the "Strengthening Families Approach and Protective Factors Framework" (SF) and the "Youth Thrive Protective and Promotive Factors Framework" (YT) in response to an urgent need in the fields of child maltreatment prevention and youth services to shift from a primary goal of identifying risk factors and "fixing" problems to elevating the goal of building attributes, relationships, knowledge, skills, and resources that maximize the potential of children, youth, and families. These research-informed frameworks address the two most significant developmental periods in the lifespan: early childhood and adolescence. The purpose of this report is to expand the perspectives and research evidence that inform the SF and YT frameworks by addressing key issues not highlighted in the initial SF and YT research foundation reports. It is intended to broaden understandings about the challenges children, youth, and parents face and ways to promote a trajectory of healthy development and well-being. The report includes research and perspectives by racially and ethnically diverse scholars to ensure that the explanations of key constructs and pathways to healthy development and well-being are not limited to a single ethnocentric perspective. Also, it is informed by perspectives of SF and YT thought partners, practitioners, and young adults which were shared during several listening sessions undertaken in 2023.

This paper presents the development of a new entropy-based feature selection method for identifying and quantifying impacts. Here, impacts are defined as statistically significant differences in spatio-temporal fields when comparing datasets with and without an external forcing in Earth system models. Temporal feature selection is performed by first computing the cross-fuzzy entropy to quantify similarity of patterns between two datasets and then applying changepoint detection to identify regions of statistically constant entropy. The method is used to capture temperate north surface cooling from a 9-member simulation ensemble of the Mt. Pinatubo volcanic eruption, which injected 10 Tg of SO2 into the stratosphere. The results estimate a mean difference decrease in near surface air temperature of -0.560 K with a 99% confidence interval between -0.864 K and -0.257 K between April and November of 1992, one year following the eruption. A sensitivity analysis with decreasing SO2 injection revealed that the impact is statistically significant at 5 Tg but not at 3 Tg. Using identified features, a dependency graph model composed of 68 nodes and 229 edges directly connecting initial aerosol optical depth changes in the tropics to solar flux and temperature changes before the temperate north surface cooling is presented.

One great challenge of modeling granular systems lies in capturing the rheologic dependencies on scale. For example, there are marked differences between quasi-static, intermediate, and rapid flow regimes. In this study, we demonstrate that assumptions for infinite stiffness of rigid particles, an assumption upon which the state-of the-art ($\mu(I)$-rheology) modeling approaches are constructed, must be relaxed in order to recover the physical mechanisms behind many scale-dependent and non-local rheological effects. Any relaxation of the infinite stiffness assumption allows for particles to compress in series, whereby the number of simultaneously compressed particles controls the extent to which end-member particles experience a modified coefficient of effective friction, analogous to reduced stiffness for springs in series. To demonstrate the importance of such a mechanism in setting the dynamics for dense rigid granular systems, we show that modifying simple models to include the kinematics introduced by compression in series captures the emergence of thin layer stability, a widely observed yet incompletely explained non-local granular phenomenon. We also discuss, in general, how knowledge of the contact network and softness provides a potential physical basis for the diffusion of granular temperature.

We examine a century of radial velocity, visual magnitude, and astrometric observations of the nearest red supergiant, Betelgeuse, in order to reexamine the century-old assertion that Betelgeuse might be a spectroscopic binary. These data reveal Betelgeuse varying stochastically over years and decades due to its boiling, convective envelope, periodically with a $ 5.78$~yr long secondary period, and quasi-periodically from pulsations with periods of several hundred days. We show that the long secondary period is consistent between astrometric and RV datasets, and argue that it indicates a low-mass companion to Betelgeuse, less than a solar mass, orbiting in a 2,110 day period at a separation of just over twice Betelgeuse's radius. The companion star would be nearly twenty times less massive and a million times fainter than Betelgeuse, with similar effective temperature, effectively hiding it in plain sight near one of the best-studied stars in the night sky. The astrometric data favor an edge-on binary with orbital plane aligned with Betelgeuse's measured spin axis. Tidal spin-orbit interaction drains angular momentum from the orbit and spins up Betelgeuse, explaining the spin--orbit alignment and Betelgeuse's anomalously rapid spin. The prediction of electronic structure for strongly correlated molecules represents a promising application for near-term quantum computers. Significant attention has been paid to ground state wavefunctions, but excited states of molecules are relatively unexplored. In this work, we consider the ADAPT-VQE algorithm, a single-reference approach for obtaining ground states, and its state-averaged generalization for computing multiple states at once. We demonstrate for both rectangular and linear H$_4$, as well as for BeH$_2$, that this approach, which we call MORE-ADAPT-VQE, can make better use of small excitation manifolds than an analagous method based on a single-reference ADAPT-VQE calculation, q-sc-EOM. In particular, MORE-ADAPT-VQE is able to accurately describe both avoided crossings and crossings between states of different symmetries. In addition to more accurate excited state energies, MORE-ADAPT-VQE can recover accurate transition dipole moments in situations where traditional ADAPT-VQE and q-sc-EOM struggle. We address three key challenges in learning continuous kernel representations: computational efficiency, parameter efficiency, and spectral bias. Continuous kernels have shown significant potential, but their practical adoption is often limited by high computational and memory demands. Additionally, these methods are prone to spectral bias, which impedes their ability to capture high-frequency details. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel approach that leverages sparse learning in the Fourier domain. Our method enables the efficient scaling of continuous kernels, drastically reduces computational and memory requirements, and mitigates spectral bias by exploiting the Gibbs phenomenon.

Recently, diffusion-based generative models have demonstrated remarkable performance in speech enhancement tasks. However, these methods still encounter challenges, including the lack of structural information and poor performance in low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) scenarios. To overcome these challenges, we propose the Schr\"oodinger Bridge-based Speech Enhancement (SBSE) method, which learns the diffusion processes directly between the noisy input and the clean distribution, unlike conventional diffusion-based speech enhancement systems that learn data to Gaussian distributions. To enhance performance in extremely noisy conditions, we introduce a two-stage system incorporating ratio mask information into the diffusion-based generative model. Our experimental results show that our proposed SBSE method outperforms all the baseline models and achieves state-of-the-art performance, especially in low SNR conditions. Importantly, only a few inference steps are required to achieve the best result.

Let $G$ be a nontrivial finite permutation group of degree $n$. If $G$ is transitive, then a theorem of Jordan states that $G$ has a derangement. Equivalently, a finite group is never the union of conjugates of a proper subgroup. If $G$ is intransitive, then $G$ may fail to have a derangement, and this can happen even if $G$ has only two orbits, both of which have size $(1/2+o(1))n$. However, we conjecture that if $G$ has two orbits of size exactly $n/2$ then $G$ does have a derangement, and we prove this conjecture when $G$ acts primitively on at least one of the orbits. Equivalently, we conjecture that a finite group is never the union of conjugates of two proper subgroups of the same order, and we prove this conjecture when at least one of the subgroups is maximal. The same conjecture was implicitly made by Feldman. We prove other cases of the conjecture, and we highlight connections our results have with intersecting families of permutations and roots of polynomials modulo primes. The rapid growth of quantum computing in the last few years has led many countries to make relevant public investments in that field. However, Colombia lacks any investment or legislation in this area. Most previous studies have focused on other countries, contributing to the region's significant lag. In this paper, we propose efforts to include quantum computing as a fundamental pillar of Colombia's development plan. In this research we involved three stakeholders: academia (Universidad Nacional de Colombia), industry (Alianza Team), and government (Vice Ministry of Digital Transformation). We anticipate that our work will provide a connection between all stakeholders involved in public investments in quantum technology in the country and will facilitate its legislation., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Social evolutionary theory seeks to explain increases in the scale and complexity of human societies, from origins to present. Over the course of the twentieth century, social evolutionary theory largely fell out of favor as a way of investigating human history, just as advances in complex systems science and computer science saw the emergence of powerful new conceptions of complex systems, and in particular new methods of measuring complexity. We propose that these advances in our understanding of complex systems and computer science should be brought to bear on our investigations into human history. To that end, we present a new framework for modeling how human societies co-evolve with their biotic environments, recognizing that both a society and its environment are computers. This leads us to model the dynamics of each of those two systems using the same, new kind of computational machine, which we define here. For simplicity, we construe a society as a set of interacting occupations and technologies. Similarly, under such a model, a biotic environment is a set of interacting distinct ecological and climatic processes. This provides novel ways to characterize social complexity, which we hope will cast new light on the archaeological and historical records. Our framework also provides a natural way to formalize both the energetic (thermodynamic) costs required by a society as it runs, and the ways it can extract thermodynamic resources from the environment in order to pay for those costs -- and perhaps to grow with any left-over resources., Comment: 61 pages, 7 figures, 5 pages of appendices, 101 references

We propose an approach for characterizing source-impact pathways, the interactions of a set of variables in space-time due to an external forcing, in climate models using in-situ analyses that circumvent computationally expensive read/write operations. This approach makes use of a lightweight open-source software library we developed known as CLDERA-Tools. We describe how CLDERA-Tools is linked with the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) in a minimally invasive way for in-situ extraction of quantities of interested and associated statistics. Subsequently, these quantities are used to represent source-impact pathways with time-dependent directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). The utility of CLDERA-Tools is demonstrated by using the data it extracts in-situ to compute a spatially resolved DAG from an idealized configuration of the atmosphere with a parameterized representation of a volcanic eruption known as HSW-V.

Participatory budgeting (PB) is a democratic approach to allocating municipal spending that has been adopted in many places in recent years, including in Chicago. Current PB voting resembles a ballot where residents are asked which municipal projects, such as school improvements and road repairs, to fund with a limited budget. In this work, we ask how interactive visualization can benefit PB by conducting a design probe-based interview study (N=13) with policy workers and academics with expertise in PB, urban planning, and civic HCI. Our probe explores how graphical elicitation of voter preferences and a dashboard of voting statistics can be incorporated into a realistic PB tool. Through qualitative analysis, we find that visualization creates opportunities for city government to set expectations about budget constraints while also granting their constituents greater freedom to articulate a wider range of preferences. However, using visualization to provide transparency about PB requires efforts to mitigate potential access barriers and mistrust. We call for more visualization professionals to help build civic capacity by working in and studying political systems.

We construct three dimensional non-semisimple topological field theories from the unrolled quantum group of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$. More precisely, the quantum group depends on a root of unity $q=e^{\frac{2 \pi \sqrt{-1}}{r}}$, where $r$ is a positive integer greater than $2$, and the construction applies when $r$ is not congruent to $4$ modulo $8$. The algebraic result which underlies the construction is the existence of a relative modular structure on the non-finite, non-semisimple category of weight modules for the quantum group. We prove a Verlinde formula which allows for the computation of dimensions and Euler characteristics of topological field theory state spaces of unmarked surfaces. When $r$ is congruent to $\pm 1$ or $\pm 2$ modulo $8$, we relate the resulting $3$-manifold invariants with physicists' $\widehat{Z}$-invariants associated to $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$. Finally, we establish a relation between $\widehat{Z}$-invariants associated to $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ and $\mathfrak{osp}(1 \vert 2)$ which was conjectured in the physics literature., Comment: 38 pages

We present Polynomial Attention Drop-in Replacement (PADRe), a novel and unifying framework designed to replace the conventional self-attention mechanism in transformer models. Notably, several recent alternative attention mechanisms, including Hyena, Mamba, SimA, Conv2Former, and Castling-ViT, can be viewed as specific instances of our PADRe framework. PADRe leverages polynomial functions and draws upon established results from approximation theory, enhancing computational efficiency without compromising accuracy. PADRe's key components include multiplicative nonlinearities, which we implement using straightforward, hardware-friendly operations such as Hadamard products, incurring only linear computational and memory costs. PADRe further avoids the need for using complex functions such as Softmax, yet it maintains comparable or superior accuracy compared to traditional self-attention. We assess the effectiveness of PADRe as a drop-in replacement for self-attention across diverse computer vision tasks. These tasks include image classification, image-based 2D object detection, and 3D point cloud object detection. Empirical results demonstrate that PADRe runs significantly faster than the conventional self-attention (11x ~ 43x faster on server GPU and mobile NPU) while maintaining similar accuracy when substituting self-attention in the transformer models.

We introduce a novel and extensible benchmark for large language models (LLMs) through grid-based games such as Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect Four, and Gomoku. The open-source game simulation code, available on GitHub, allows LLMs to compete and generates detailed data files in JSON, CSV, TXT, and PNG formats for leaderboard rankings and further analysis. We present the results of games among leading LLMs, including Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3 Sonnet by Anthropic, Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemini 1.5 Flash by Google, GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4o by OpenAI, and Llama3-70B by Meta. We also encourage submissions of results from other LLMs. In total, we simulated 2,310 matches (5 sessions for each pair among 7 LLMs and a random player) across three types of games, using three distinct prompt types: list, illustration, and image. The results revealed significant variations in LLM performance across different games and prompt types, with analysis covering win and disqualification rates, missed opportunity analysis, and invalid move analysis. The details of the leaderboard and result matrix data are available as open-access data on GitHub. This study enhances our understanding of LLMs' capabilities in playing games they were not specifically trained for, helping to assess their rule comprehension and strategic thinking. On the path to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), this study lays the groundwork for future exploration into their utility in complex decision-making scenarios, illuminating their strategic thinking abilities and offering directions for further inquiry into the limits of LLMs within game-based frameworks.

This work introduces and assesses the efficiency of a monolithic $ph$MG multigrid framework designed for high-order discretizations of stationary Stokes systems using Taylor-Hood and Scott-Vogelius elements. The proposed approach integrates coarsening in both approximation order ($p$) and mesh resolution ($h$), to address the computational and memory efficiency challenges that are often encountered in conventional high-order numerical simulations. Our numerical results reveal that $ph$MG offers significant improvements over traditional spatial-coarsening-only multigrid ($h$MG) techniques for problems discretized with Taylor-Hood elements across a variety of problem sizes and discretization orders. In particular, the $ph$MG method exhibits superior performance in reducing setup and solve times, particularly when dealing with higher discretization orders and unstructured problem domains. For Scott-Vogelius discretizations, while monolithic $ph$MG delivers low iteration counts and competitive solve phase timings, it exhibits a discernibly slower setup phase when compared to a multilevel (non-monolithic) full-block-factorization (FBF) preconditioner where $ph$MG is employed only for the velocity unknowns. This is primarily due to the setup costs of the larger mixed-field relaxation patches with monolithic $ph$MG versus the patch setup costs with a single unknown type for FBF.

In this short paper we apply some recent techniques developed by Schonsheck, and subsequently Carr-Harper, in the context of operadic algebras in spectra -- on convergence of Bousfield-Kan completions and comparisons with convergence of the Taylor tower of the identity functor in Goodwillie's functor calculus -- to the setting of retractive spaces: this arises when working with spaces centered away from the one-point space. Interestingly, in the retractive spaces context, the comparison results are stronger in terms of convergence outside of functor calculus' notion of "radius of (strong) convergence" for analytic functors. In particular, we give a new proof (and generalization to retractive spaces) of the Arone-Kankaanrinta result for convergence of the Taylor tower of the identity functor to various Bousfield-Kan completions; it's notable that no use is made of Snaith splittings -- rather, we make extensive use of the kinds of homotopical estimates that appear in earlier work of Dundas and Dundas-Goodwillie-McCarthy.

The aim of this paper is to study convergence of Bousfield-Kan completions with respect to the 1-excisive approximation of the identity functor and exotic convergence of the Taylor tower of the identity functor, for algebras over operads in spectra centered away from the null object. In Goodwillie's homotopy functor calculus, being centered away from the null object amounts to doing homotopy theory and functor calculus in the retractive setting.

Large language models (LLMs) are capable of producing documents, and retrieval augmented generation (RAG) has shown itself to be a powerful method for improving accuracy without sacrificing fluency. However, not all information can be retrieved from text. We propose an approach that uses the analysis of structured data to generate fact sets that are used to guide generation in much the same way that retrieved documents are used in RAG. This analytics augmented generation (AAG) approach supports the ability to utilize standard analytic techniques to generate facts that are then converted to text and passed to an LLM. We present a neurosymbolic platform, Satyrn that leverages AAG to produce accurate, fluent, and coherent reports grounded in large scale databases. In our experiments, we find that Satyrn generates reports in which over 86% accurate claims while maintaining high levels of fluency and coherence, even when using smaller language models such as Mistral-7B, as compared to GPT-4 Code Interpreter in which just 57% of claims are accurate.

The Carbon monOxide Mapping Array Project (COMAP) Pathfinder survey continues to demonstrate the feasibility of line-intensity mapping using high-redshift carbon monoxide (CO) line emission traced at cosmological scales. The latest COMAP Pathfinder power spectrum analysis is based on observations through the end of Season 2, covering the first three years of Pathfinder operations. We use our latest constraints on the CO(1-0) line-intensity power spectrum at $z\sim3$ to update corresponding constraints on the cosmological clustering of CO line emission and thus the cosmic molecular gas content at a key epoch of galaxy assembly. We first mirror the COMAP Early Science interpretation, considering how Season 2 results translate to limits on the shot noise power of CO fluctuations and the bias of CO emission as a tracer of the underlying dark matter distribution. The COMAP Season 2 results place the most stringent limits on the CO tracer bias to date, at $\langle{Tb}\rangle<4.8$ $\mu$K. These limits narrow the model space significantly compared to previous CO line-intensity mapping results while maintaining consistency with small-volume interferometric surveys of resolved line candidates. The results also express a weak preference for CO emission models used to guide fiducial forecasts from COMAP Early Science, including our data-driven priors. We also consider directly constraining a model of the halo-CO connection, and show qualitative hints of capturing the total contribution of faint CO emitters through the improved sensitivity of COMAP data. We present updated constraints on the cosmological 3D power spectrum of carbon monoxide CO(1-0) emission in the redshift range $2.4$-$3.4$. The constraints are derived from the two first seasons of Carbon monOxide Mapping Array Project (COMAP) Pathfinder line-intensity mapping observations aiming to trace star-formation during the Epoch of Galaxy Assembly. These results improve on the previous Early Science (ES) results through both increased data volume and improved data processing methodology. On the methodological side, we now perform cross-correlations between groups of detectors (''feed-groups''), as opposed to cross-correlations between single feeds, and this new feed-group pseudo power spectrum (FGPXS) is constructed to be more robust against systematic effects. In terms of data volume, the effective mapping speed is significantly increased due to an improved observational strategy as well as better data selection methodology. The updated spherically- and field-averaged FGPXS, $\tilde{C}(k)$, is consistent with zero, at a probability-to-exceed of around $34\,\%$, with an excess of $2.7\,\sigma$ in the most sensitive bin. Our power spectrum estimate is about an order of magnitude more sensitive in our six deepest bins across ${0.09\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1} < k < 0.73\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}}$, as compared to the feed-feed pseudo power spectrum (FPXS) of COMAP ES. Each of these bins individually constrains the CO power spectrum to ${kP_\mathrm{CO}(k)< 2400-4900\,\mathrm{\mu K^2 Mpc^{2}}}$ at $95\,\%$ confidence. To monitor potential contamination from residual systematic effects, we analyze a set of 312 difference-map null tests and find that these are consistent with the instrumental noise prediction. The CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP) Pathfinder is performing line intensity mapping of CO emission to trace the distribution of unresolved galaxies at redshift $z \sim 3$. We present an improved version of the COMAP data processing pipeline and apply this to the first two seasons of observations. This analysis improves on the COMAP Early Science (ES) results in several key aspects. On the observational side, all second season scans were made in constant-elevation mode, after noting that the previous Lissajous scans were associated with increased systematic errors; those scans accounted for 50% of the total Season 1 data volume. Secondly, all new observations were restricted to an elevation range of 35-65 degrees, to minimize sidelobe ground pickup. On the data processing side, more effective data cleaning in both the time- and map-domain has allowed us to eliminate all data-driven power spectrum-based cuts. This increases the overall data retention and reduces the risk of signal subtraction bias. On the other hand, due to the increased sensitivity, two new pointing-correlated systematic errors have emerged, and we introduce a new map-domain PCA filter to suppress these. Subtracting only 5 out of 256 PCA modes, we find that the standard deviation of the cleaned maps decreases by 67% on large angular scales, and after applying this filter, the maps appear consistent with instrumental noise. Combining all these improvements, we find that each hour of raw Season 2 observations yields on average 3.2 times more cleaned data compared to ES analysis. Combining this with the increase in raw observational hours, the effective amount of data available for high-level analysis is a factor of 8 higher than in ES. The resulting maps have reached an uncertainty of $25$-$50\,\mu K$ per voxel, providing by far the strongest constraints on cosmological CO line emission published to date., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures, for submission to Astronomy and Astrophysics

We introduce NeuroSA, a neuromorphic architecture specifically designed to ensure asymptotic convergence to the ground state of an Ising problem using an annealing process that is governed by the physics of quantum mechanical tunneling using Fowler-Nordheim (FN). The core component of NeuroSA consists of a pair of asynchronous ON-OFF neurons, which effectively map classical simulated annealing (SA) dynamics onto a network of integrate-and-fire (IF) neurons. The threshold of each ON-OFF neuron pair is adaptively adjusted by an FN annealer which replicates the optimal escape mechanism and convergence of SA, particularly at low temperatures. To validate the effectiveness of our neuromorphic Ising machine, we systematically solved various benchmark MAX-CUT combinatorial optimization problems. Across multiple runs, NeuroSA consistently generates solutions that approach the state-of-the-art level with high accuracy (greater than 99%), and without any graph-specific hyperparameter tuning. For practical illustration, we present results from an implementation of NeuroSA on the SpiNNaker2 platform, highlighting the feasibility of mapping our proposed architecture onto a standard neuromorphic accelerator platform., Comment: 36 pages, 8 figures

LiteBIRD, the next-generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment, aims for a launch in Japan's fiscal year 2032, marking a major advancement in the exploration of primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. Orbiting the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2, this JAXA-led strategic L-class mission will conduct a comprehensive mapping of the CMB polarization across the entire sky. During its 3-year mission, LiteBIRD will employ three telescopes within 15 unique frequency bands (ranging from 34 through 448 GHz), targeting a sensitivity of 2.2\,$\mu$K-arcmin and a resolution of 0.5$^\circ$ at 100\,GHz. Its primary goal is to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ with an uncertainty $\delta r = 0.001$, including systematic errors and margin. If $r \geq 0.01$, LiteBIRD expects to achieve a $>5\sigma$ detection in the $\ell=$2-10 and $\ell=$11-200 ranges separately, providing crucial insight into the early Universe. We describe LiteBIRD's scientific objectives, the application of systems engineering to mission requirements, the anticipated scientific impact, and the operations and scanning strategies vital to minimizing systematic effects. In the analysis of spatially resolved transcriptomics data, detecting spatially variable genes (SVGs) is crucial. Numerous computational methods exist, but varying SVG definitions and methodologies lead to incomparable results. We review 31 state-of-the-art methods, categorizing SVGs into three types: overall, cell-type-specific, and spatial-domain-marker SVGs. Our review explains the intuitions underlying these methods, summarizes their applications, and categorizes the hypothesis tests they use in the trade-off between generality and specificity for SVG detection. We discuss challenges in SVG detection and propose future directions for improvement. Our review offers insights for method developers and users, advocating for category-specific benchmarking.

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. This paper presents the specification, design, and development of the Visible Camera (VIS) on the ESA Euclid mission. VIS is a large optical-band imager with a field of view of 0.54 deg^2 sampled at 0.1" with an array of 609 Megapixels and spatial resolution of 0.18". It will be used to survey approximately 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky to measure the distortion of galaxies in the redshift range z=0.1-1.5 resulting from weak gravitational lensing, one of the two principal cosmology probes of Euclid. With photometric redshifts, the distribution of dark matter can be mapped in three dimensions, and, from how this has changed with look-back time, the nature of dark energy and theories of gravity can be constrained. The entire VIS focal plane will be transmitted to provide the largest images of the Universe from space to date, reaching m_AB>24.5 with S/N >10 in a single broad I_E~(r+i+z) band over a six year survey. The particularly challenging aspects of the instrument are the control and calibration of observational biases, which lead to stringent performance requirements and calibration regimes. With its combination of spatial resolution, calibration knowledge, depth, and area covering most of the extra-Galactic sky, VIS will also provide a legacy data set for many other fields. This paper discusses the rationale behind the VIS concept and describes the instrument design and development before reporting the pre-launch performance derived from ground calibrations and brief results from the in-orbit commissioning. VIS should reach fainter than m_AB=25 with S/N>10 for galaxies of full-width half-maximum of 0.3" in a 1.3" diameter aperture over the Wide Survey, and m_AB>26.4 for a Deep Survey that will cover more than 50 deg^2. Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME) is a major component of Galactic emission in the frequency band 10 to 60 GHz and is commonly modelled as rapidly rotating spinning dust grains. The photodissociation region (PDR) at the boundary of the $\lambda$-Orionis Hii region has been identified by several recent analyses as one of the brightest spinning dust emitting sources in the sky. We investigate the Barnard 30 dark cloud, a dark cloud embedded within the $\lambda$-Orionis PDR. We use total-power observations of Barnard 30 from the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP) pathfinder instrument at 26 to 34GHz with a resolution of 4.5 arcminutes alongside existing data from Planck, WISE, IRAS, ACT, and the 1.447GHz GALFACTS survey. We use aperture photometry and template fitting to measure the spectral energy distribution of Barnard 30. We find that the spinning dust is the dominant emission component in the 26 to 34GHz range at the $7 \sigma$ level ($S_{30GHz} = 2.85\pm0.43$Jy). We find no evidence that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are the preferred carrier for the spinning dust emission, suggesting that the spinning dust carriers are due to a mixed population of very small grains. Finally, we find evidence for variations in spinning dust emissivity and peak frequency within Barnard 30, and that these variations are possibly driven by changes in dust grain population and the total radiation field. Confirming the origin of the variations in the spinning dust spectrum will require both future COMAP observations at 15GHz combined with spectroscopic mid-infrared data of Barnard 30., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures. In an effort to search for faint sources of emission over arbitrary timescales, we present a novel method for analyzing forced photometry light curves in difference imaging from optical surveys. Our method "ATLAS Clean'' or ATClean, utilizes the reported fluxes, uncertainties, and fits to the point-spread function from difference images to quantify the statistical significance of individual measurements. We apply this method to control light curves across the image to determine whether any source of flux is present in the data for a range of specific timescales. From ATLAS $o$-band imaging at the site of the Type II supernova (SN) 2023ixf in M101 from 2015--2023, we show that this method accurately reproduces the 3$\sigma$ flux limits produced from other, more computationally expensive methods. We derive limits for emission on timescales of 5~days and 80-300~days at the site of SN\,2023ixf, which are 19.8 and 21.3~mag, respectively. The latter limits rule out variability for unextinguished red supergiants (RSG) with initial masses $>$22~$M_{\odot}$, comparable to the most luminous predictions for the SN 2023ixf progenitor system. We also compare our limits to short timescale outbursts, similar to those expected for Type IIn SN progenitor stars or the Type II SN 2020tlf, and rule out outburst ejecta masses of $>$0.021~$M_{\odot}$, much lower than the inferred mass of circumstellar matter around SN 2023ixf in the literature. Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is emitted from various sources, terrestrial or orbital, and create a nuisance for ground-based 21cm experiments. In particular, single-dish 21cm intensity mapping experiments will be highly susceptible to contamination from these sources due to its wide primary beam and sensitivity. This work aims to simulate the contamination effects emitted from orbital sources in the Radio Navigational Satellite System within the 1100-1350 MHz frequency. This simulation can be split into two parts: (I) satellite positioning, emission power, and beam response on the telescope and (II) fitting of the satellite signal to data in order to improve the original model. We use previously observed single dish MeerKAT L-band data which needs to be specially calibrated to include data contaminated by satellite-based RFI. We find that due to non-linearity effects, it becomes non-trivial to fit the satellite power. However, when masking regions where this non-linearity is problematic, we can recreate the satellite contamination with high accuracy around its peak frequencies. The simulation can predict satellite movements and signal for past and future observations, which can help in RFI avoidance and testing novel cleaning methods. The predicted signal from simulations sits below the noise in the target cosmology window for the L-band (970 - 1015 MHz) making it difficult to confirm any out-of-band emission from satellites. However, a power spectrum analysis shows that such signal can still contaminate the 21cm power spectrum at these frequencies. In our simulations, this contamination overwhelms the auto-power spectrum but still allows for a clean detection of the signal in cross-correlations with mild foreground cleaning. There is renewed interest in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion, following the milestone December 2022 3.15 MJ ignition result on the National Ignition Facility. A key obstacle is the control of the two plasmon decay instability. Here, recent advances in inhomogeneous turbulence theory are applied to the broadband parametric instability problem for the first time. A novel dispersion relation is derived for the two plasmon decay in a uniform plasma valid under broad-bandwidth laser fields with arbitrary power spectra. The effects of temporal incoherence on the instability are then studied. In the limit of large bandwidth, the well-known scaling relations for the growth rate are recovered, but it is shown that the result is more sensitive to the spectral shape of the laser pulse rather than to its coherence time. The range of wavenumbers of the excited plasma waves is shown to be substantially broadened, suggesting that the absolute instability is favoured in regions further away from the quarter critical density. The intermediate bandwidth regime is explored numerically -- the growth rate is reduced to half its monochromatic value for laser intensities of $10^{15} \, \text{W}/\text{cm}^{2}$ and relatively modest bandwidths of $5 \, \text{THz}$. The instability-quenching properties of a spectrum of discrete lines spread over some bandwidth have also been studied. The reduction in the growth rate is found to be somewhat lower compared to the continuous case but is still significant, despite the fact that, formally, the coherence time of such a laser pulse is infinite., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication at the Journal of Plasma Physics

The proliferation of large language models (LLMs) and their integration into multi-agent systems has paved the way for sophisticated automation in various domains. This paper introduces AutoGenesisAgent, a multi-agent system that autonomously designs and deploys other multi-agent systems tailored for specific tasks. AutoGenesisAgent comprises several specialized agents including System Understanding, System Design, Agent Generator, and several others that collectively manage the lifecycle of creating functional multi-agent systems from initial concept to deployment. Each agent in AutoGenesisAgent has distinct responsibilities ranging from interpreting input prompts to optimizing system performance, culminating, in the deployment of a ready-to-use system. This proof-of-concept study discusses the design, implementation, and lessons learned from developing AutoGenesisAgent, highlighting its capability to generate and refine multi-agent systems autonomously, thereby reducing the need for extensive human oversight in the initial stages of system design. We describe recent spectroscopic observations of red giant stars made by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) instrument on board the Hubble Space Telescope, which have provided spatially resolved observations of the warm chromospheric winds that predominate for early K to mid-M giants. The H I Lyman-alpha lines of a set of 11 red giants observed with the STIS/E140M echelle grating are first analyzed to ascertain wind H I column densities and total wind mass-loss rates. The M giants have estimated mass-loss rates of Mdot=(14-86)e-11 Msun/yr, while the K giants with detected wind absorption have weaker winds with Mdot=(1.5-2.8)e-11 Msun/yr. We use long-slit spectra of H I Lyman-alpha for two particular red giants, Alpha Tau (K5 III) and Gamma Cru (M3.5 III), to study the spatial extent of the Lyman-alpha emission. From these data we estimate limits for the extent of detectable emission, which are r=193 Rstar for Gamma Cru and r=44 Rstar for Alpha Tau. Cross-dispersion emission profiles in the STIS echelle spectra of the larger sample of red giants also show evidence for spatial resolution, not only for H I Lyman-alpha but for other lines with visible wind absorption, such as Fe II, Mg II, Mg I, O I, and C II. We characterize the nature of these spatial signatures.
