The first International AI Safety Report comprehensively synthesizes the current evidence on the capabilities, risks, and safety of advanced AI systems. The report was mandated by the nations attending the AI Safety Summit in Bletchley, UK. Thirty nations, the UN, the OECD, and the EU each nominated a representative to the report's Expert Advisory Panel. A total of 100 AI experts contributed, representing diverse perspectives and disciplines. Led by the report's Chair, these independent experts collectively had full discretion over the report's content.

Social media platforms utilize Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered recommendation algorithms to maximize user engagement, which can result in inadvertent exposure to harmful content. Current moderation efforts, reliant on classifiers trained with extensive human-annotated data, struggle with scalability and adapting to new forms of harm. To address these challenges, we propose a novel re-ranking approach using Large Language Models (LLMs) in zero-shot and few-shot settings. Our method dynamically assesses and re-ranks content sequences, effectively mitigating harmful content exposure without requiring extensive labeled data. Alongside traditional ranking metrics, we also introduce two new metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of re-ranking in reducing exposure to harmful content. Through experiments on three datasets, three models and across three configurations, we demonstrate that our LLM-based approach significantly outperforms existing proprietary moderation approaches, offering a scalable and adaptable solution for harm mitigation., Comment: This paper is under peer review

This paper investigates physiological markers of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) by examining the relationship between Electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements and speech, a known anxiety-inducing activity. Specifically, we analyze changes in heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) during four distinct phases: baseline, anticipation, speech activity, and reflection. Our study, involving 51 participants (31 with SAD and 20 without), found that HRV decreased and HR increased during the anticipation and speech activity phases compared to baseline. In contrast, during the reflection phase, HRV increased and HR decreased. Additionally, participants with SAD exhibited lower HRV, higher HR, and reported greater self-perceived anxiety compared to those without SAD. These findings have implications for developing wearable technology to monitor SAD. We also provide our dataset, which captures anxiety across multiple stages, to support further research in this area.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) significantly impacts individuals' daily lives and relationships. The conventional methods for SAD detection involve physical consultations and self-reported questionnaires, but they have limitations such as time consumption and bias. This paper introduces video analysis as a promising method for early SAD detection. Specifically, we present a new approach for detecting SAD in individuals from various bodily features extracted from the video data. We conducted a study to collect video data of 92 participants performing impromptu speech in a controlled environment. Using the video data, we studied the behavioral change in participants' head, body, eye gaze, and action units. By applying a range of machine learning and deep learning algorithms, we achieved an accuracy rate of up to 74\% in classifying participants as SAD or non-SAD. Video-based SAD detection offers a non-intrusive and scalable approach that can be deployed in real-time, potentially enhancing early detection and intervention capabilities.

In this study, we considered the optical wavelength of Gaia DR3 to analyze poorly studied three newly open star clusters namely OCSN 203, OCSN 213, and OCSN 244 clusters with ASTECA code. Here, we identified candidates of 227, 200, and 551 with highly probable ($P \geq 50\%$) members. Fitting King's profile within RDPs allows us to estimate inner stellar structures like core (0.190 $\le r_{\rm c}$ (pc) $\le$ 1.284) and the limiting (0.327 $\le r_{\rm cl}$ (pc) $\le 1.302$) radii. Constructing CMDs fitted with suitable log age (yr) between (log t; 6.52 - 7.05) and metallicities (Z; 0.01308-0.01413) isochrones. Therefore, the estimated photometric parameters with CMDs, reflect the heliocentric distances are 332 $\pm$ 18, 529 $\pm$ 23, and 506 $\pm$ 23 (pc) for OCSN 203, OCSN 213, and OCSN 244, respectively. Furthermore, the collective mass ($M_{\rm C}$) in solar mass units calculated with MLR as 67 $\pm$ 8.19, 91 $\pm$ 9.54, and 353 $\pm$ 18.79. Additionally, LF determined that the mean absolute magnitudes are 9.54 $\pm$ 3.09, 8.52 $\pm$ 2.92, and 7.60 $\pm$ 2.76 for these clusters, respectively. The overall mass function reflects the slopes ($\alpha$) for Salpeter within the uncertainty are ($\alpha_{OCSN203}$ = 2.41 $\pm$ 0.06), ($\alpha_{OCSN213}$ = 2.13 $\pm$ 0.07), and ($\alpha_{OCSN244}$ = 2.28 $\pm$ 0.07). The results of this study which employed a dynamical analysis over varying timescales indicate that OCSN 203 and OCSN 244 are clusters that have undergone significant relaxation, with a dynamical evolution parameter ($\tau$) that is much greater than one. In contrast, OCSN 213 exhibits characteristics of a non-relaxed cluster. A kinematic analysis of these open clusters was carried out, encompassing aspects of their apex position ($A_o,D_o$) using the AD diagrams. Colorectal polyps are structural abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract that can potentially become cancerous in some cases. The study introduces a novel framework for colorectal polyp segmentation named the Multi-Scale and Multi-Path Cascaded Convolution Network (MMCC-Net), aimed at addressing the limitations of existing models, such as inadequate spatial dependence representation and the absence of multi-level feature integration during the decoding stage by integrating multi-scale and multi-path cascaded convolutional techniques and enhances feature aggregation through dual attention modules, skip connections, and a feature enhancer. MMCC-Net achieves superior performance in identifying polyp areas at the pixel level. The Proposed MMCC-Net was tested across six public datasets and compared against eight SOTA models to demonstrate its efficiency in polyp segmentation. The MMCC-Net's performance shows Dice scores with confidence intervals ranging between (77.08, 77.56) and (94.19, 94.71) and Mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) scores with confidence intervals ranging from (72.20, 73.00) to (89.69, 90.53) on the six databases. These results highlight the model's potential as a powerful tool for accurate and efficient polyp segmentation, contributing to early detection and prevention strategies in colorectal cancer.

Non-invasive temperature monitoring of individuals plays a crucial role in identifying and isolating symptomatic individuals. Temperature monitoring becomes particularly vital in settings characterized by close human proximity, often referred to as dense settings. However, existing research on non-invasive temperature estimation using thermal cameras has predominantly focused on sparse settings. Unfortunately, the risk of disease transmission is significantly higher in dense settings like movie theaters or classrooms. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop robust temperature estimation methods tailored explicitly for dense settings. Our study proposes a non-invasive temperature estimation system that combines a thermal camera with an edge device. Our system employs YOLO models for face detection and utilizes a regression framework for temperature estimation. We evaluated the system on a diverse dataset collected in dense and sparse settings. Our proposed face detection model achieves an impressive mAP score of over 84 in both in-dataset and cross-dataset evaluations. Furthermore, the regression framework demonstrates remarkable performance with a mean square error of 0.18$^{\circ}$C and an impressive $R^2$ score of 0.96. Our experiments' results highlight the developed system's effectiveness, positioning it as a promising solution for continuous temperature monitoring in real-world applications. Existing claim verification datasets often do not require systems to perform complex reasoning or effectively interpret multimodal evidence. To address this, we introduce a new task: multi-hop multimodal claim verification. This task challenges models to reason over multiple pieces of evidence from diverse sources, including text, images, and tables, and determine whether the combined multimodal evidence supports or refutes a given claim. To study this task, we construct MMCV, a large-scale dataset comprising 15k multi-hop claims paired with multimodal evidence, generated and refined using large language models, with additional input from human feedback. We show that MMCV is challenging even for the latest state-of-the-art multimodal large language models, especially as the number of reasoning hops increases. Additionally, we establish a human performance benchmark on a subset of MMCV. In this paper, we make a case for a proxy for large language models which has explicit support for cost-saving optimizations. We design LLMProxy, which supports three key optimizations: model selection, context management, and caching. These optimizations present tradeoffs in terms of cost, inference time, and response quality, which applications can navigate through our high level, bidirectional interface. As a case study, we implement a WhatsApp-based Q&A service that uses LLMProxy to provide a rich set of features to the users. This service is deployed on a small scale (100+ users) leveraging the cloud; it has been operational for 15+ weeks and users have asked 1400+ questions so far. We report on the experiences of running this service as well as microbenchmark the specific benefits of the various cost-optimizations we present in this paper.

Current state-of-the-art residential irrigation systems, such as WaterMyYard, rely on rainfall data from nearby weather stations to adjust irrigation amounts. However, the accuracy of rainfall data is compromised by the limited spatial resolution of rain gauges and the significant variability of hyperlocal rainfall, leading to substantial water waste. To improve irrigation efficiency, we developed a cost-effective irrigation system, dubbed ERIC, which employs machine learning models to estimate rainfall from commodity doorbell camera footage and optimizes irrigation schedules without human intervention. Specifically, we: a) designed novel visual and audio features with lightweight neural network models to infer rainfall from the camera at the edge, preserving user privacy; b) built a complete end-to-end irrigation system on Raspberry Pi 4, costing only \$75. We deployed the system across five locations (collecting over 750 hours of video) with varying backgrounds and light conditions. Comprehensive evaluation validates that ERIC achieves state-of-the-art rainfall estimation performance ($\sim$ 5mm/day), saving 9,112 gallons/month of water, translating to \$28.56/month in utility savings. This paper introduces the concept of an education tool that utilizes Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to enhance storytelling for children. The system combines GenAI-driven narrative co-creation, text-to-speech conversion, and text-to-video generation to produce an engaging experience for learners. We describe the co-creation process, the adaptation of narratives into spoken words using text-to-speech models, and the transformation of these narratives into contextually relevant visuals through text-to-video technology. Our evaluation covers the linguistics of the generated stories, the text-to-speech conversion quality, and the accuracy of the generated visuals.

In computer-aided diagnosis tools employed for skin cancer treatment and early diagnosis, skin lesion segmentation is important. However, achieving precise segmentation is challenging due to inherent variations in appearance, contrast, texture, and blurry lesion boundaries. This research presents a robust approach utilizing a dilated convolutional residual network, which incorporates an attention-based spatial feature enhancement block (ASFEB) and employs a guided decoder strategy. In each dilated convolutional residual block, dilated convolution is employed to broaden the receptive field with varying dilation rates. To improve the spatial feature information of the encoder, we employed an attention-based spatial feature enhancement block in the skip connections. The ASFEB in our proposed method combines feature maps obtained from average and maximum-pooling operations. These combined features are then weighted using the active outcome of global average pooling and convolution operations. Additionally, we have incorporated a guided decoder strategy, where each decoder block is optimized using an individual loss function to enhance the feature learning process in the proposed AD-Net. The proposed AD-Net presents a significant benefit by necessitating fewer model parameters compared to its peer methods. This reduction in parameters directly impacts the number of labeled data required for training, facilitating faster convergence during the training process. The effectiveness of the proposed AD-Net was evaluated using four public benchmark datasets. We conducted a Wilcoxon signed-rank test to verify the efficiency of the AD-Net. The outcomes suggest that our method surpasses other cutting-edge methods in performance, even without the implementation of data augmentation strategies.

Multimodal networks have demonstrated remarkable performance improvements over their unimodal counterparts. Existing multimodal networks are designed in a multi-branch fashion that, due to the reliance on fusion strategies, exhibit deteriorated performance if one or more modalities are missing. In this work, we propose a modality invariant multimodal learning method, which is less susceptible to the impact of missing modalities. It consists of a single-branch network sharing weights across multiple modalities to learn inter-modality representations to maximize performance as well as robustness to missing modalities. Extensive experiments are performed on four challenging datasets including textual-visual (UPMC Food-101, Hateful Memes, Ferramenta) and audio-visual modalities (VoxCeleb1). Our proposed method achieves superior performance when all modalities are present as well as in the case of missing modalities during training or testing compared to the existing state-of-the-art methods.

The preservation of the corticospinal tract (CST) is key to good motor recovery after stroke. The gold standard method of assessing the CST with imaging is diffusion tensor tractography. However, this is not available for most intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) patients. Non-contrast CT scans are routinely available in most ICH diagnostic pipelines, but delineating white matter from a CT scan is challenging. We utilise nnU-Net, trained on paired diagnostic CT scans and high-directional diffusion tractography maps, to segment the CST from diagnostic CT scans alone, and we show our model reproduces diffusion based tractography maps of the CST with a Dice similarity coefficient of 57%. Surgical haematoma evacuation is sometimes performed after ICH, but published clinical trials to date show that whilst surgery reduces mortality, there is no evidence of improved functional recovery. Restricting surgery to patients with an intact CST may reveal a subset of patients for whom haematoma evacuation improves functional outcome. We investigated the clinical utility of our model in the MISTIE III clinical trial dataset. We found that our model's CST integrity measure significantly predicted outcome after ICH in the acute and chronic time frames, therefore providing a prognostic marker for patients to whom advanced diffusion tensor imaging is unavailable. Existing neural constructive solvers for routing problems have predominantly employed transformer architectures, conceptualizing the route construction as a set-to-sequence learning task. However, their efficacy has primarily been demonstrated on entirely random problem instances that inadequately capture real-world scenarios. In this paper, we introduce realistic Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) scenarios relevant to industrial settings and derive the following insights: (1) The optimal next node (or city) to visit often lies within proximity to the current node, suggesting the potential benefits of biasing choices based on current locations. (2) Effectively solving the TSP requires robust tracking of unvisited nodes and warrants succinct grouping strategies. Building upon these insights, we propose integrating a learnable choice layer inspired by Hypernetworks to prioritize choices based on the current location, and a learnable approximate clustering algorithm inspired by the Expectation-Maximization algorithm to facilitate grouping the unvisited cities. Together, these two contributions form a hierarchical approach towards solving the realistic TSP by considering both immediate local neighbourhoods and learning an intermediate set of node representations. Autistic individuals often experience difficulties in conveying and interpreting emotional tone and non-literal nuances. Many also mask their communication style to avoid being misconstrued by others, spending considerable time and mental effort in the process. To address these challenges in text-based communication, we present TwIPS, a prototype texting application powered by a large language model (LLM), which can assist users with: a) deciphering tone and meaning of incoming messages, b) ensuring the emotional tone of their message is in line with their intent, and c) coming up with alternate phrasing for messages that could be misconstrued and received negatively by others. We leverage an AI-based simulation and a conversational script to evaluate TwIPS with 8 autistic participants in an in-lab setting. Our findings show TwIPS enables a convenient way for participants to seek clarifications, provides a better alternative to tone indicators, and facilitates constructive reflection on writing technique and style. We also examine how autistic users utilize language for self-expression and interpretation in instant messaging, and gather feedback for enhancing our prototype. We conclude with a discussion around balancing user-autonomy with AI-mediation, establishing appropriate trust levels in AI systems, and customization needs if autistic users in the context of AI-assisted communication

The increasing interest in computer vision applications for nutrition and dietary monitoring has led to the development of advanced 3D reconstruction techniques for food items. However, the scarcity of high-quality data and limited collaboration between industry and academia have constrained progress in this field. Building on recent advancements in 3D reconstruction, we host the MetaFood Workshop and its challenge for Physically Informed 3D Food Reconstruction. This challenge focuses on reconstructing volume-accurate 3D models of food items from 2D images, using a visible checkerboard as a size reference. Participants were tasked with reconstructing 3D models for 20 selected food items of varying difficulty levels: easy, medium, and hard. The easy level provides 200 images, the medium level provides 30 images, and the hard level provides only 1 image for reconstruction. In total, 16 teams submitted results in the final testing phase. The solutions developed in this challenge achieved promising results in 3D food reconstruction, with significant potential for improving portion estimation for dietary assessment and nutritional monitoring. Accurate food volume estimation is essential for dietary assessment, nutritional tracking, and portion control applications. We present VolETA, a sophisticated methodology for estimating food volume using 3D generative techniques. Our approach creates a scaled 3D mesh of food objects using one- or few-RGBD images. We start by selecting keyframes based on the RGB images and then segmenting the reference object in the RGB images using XMem++. Simultaneously, camera positions are estimated and refined using the PixSfM technique. The segmented food images, reference objects, and camera poses are combined to form a data model suitable for NeuS2. Independent mesh reconstructions for reference and food objects are carried out, with scaling factors determined using MeshLab based on the reference object. Moreover, depth information is used to fine-tune the scaling factors by estimating the potential volume range. The fine-tuned scaling factors are then applied to the cleaned food meshes for accurate volume measurements. Similarly, we enter a segmented RGB image to the One-2-3-45 model for one-shot food volume estimation, resulting in a mesh. We then leverage the obtained scaling factors to the cleaned food mesh for accurate volume measurements. Our experiments show that our method effectively addresses occlusions, varying lighting conditions, and complex food geometries, achieving robust and accurate volume estimations with 10.97% MAPE using the MTF dataset. This innovative approach enhances the precision of volume assessments and significantly contributes to computational nutrition and dietary monitoring advancements.

Efficient and accurate 3D reconstruction is crucial for various applications, including augmented and virtual reality, medical imaging, and cinematic special effects. While traditional Multi-View Stereo (MVS) systems have been fundamental in these applications, using neural implicit fields in implicit 3D scene modeling has introduced new possibilities for handling complex topologies and continuous surfaces. However, neural implicit fields often suffer from computational inefficiencies, overfitting, and heavy reliance on data quality, limiting their practical use. This paper presents an enhanced MVS framework that integrates multi-view 360-degree imagery with robust camera pose estimation via Structure from Motion (SfM) and advanced image processing for point cloud densification, mesh reconstruction, and texturing. Our approach significantly improves upon traditional MVS methods, offering superior accuracy and precision as validated using Chamfer distance metrics on the Realistic Synthetic 360 dataset. The developed MVS technique enhances the detail and clarity of 3D reconstructions and demonstrates superior computational efficiency and robustness in complex scene reconstruction, effectively handling occlusions and varying viewpoints. These improvements suggest that our MVS framework can compete with and potentially exceed current state-of-the-art neural implicit field methods, especially in scenarios requiring real-time processing and scalability., Comment: The work is under review

Primary Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a rare autoimmune disease characterised by immune-mediated destruction of peripheral blood platelets in patients leading to low platelet counts and bleeding. The diagnosis and effective management of ITP is challenging because there is no established test to confirm the disease and no biomarker with which one can predict the response to treatment and outcome. In this work we conduct a feasibility study to check if machine learning can be applied effectively for diagnosis of ITP using routine blood tests and demographic data in a non-acute outpatient setting. Various ML models, including Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, k-Nearest Neighbor, Decision Tree and Random Forest, were applied to data from the UK Adult ITP Registry and a general hematology clinic. Two different approaches were investigated: a demographic-unaware and a demographic-aware one. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the predictive performance of these models and approaches, as well as their bias. The results revealed that Decision Tree and Random Forest models were both superior and fair, achieving nearly perfect predictive and fairness scores, with platelet count identified as the most significant variable. Models not provided with demographic information performed better in terms of predictive accuracy but showed lower fairness score, illustrating a trade-off between predictive performance and fairness.
