The growing demand for electric power and the need for an energy transition that contributes to the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions have driven the development of various energy generation, storage, and offset technologies. These technologies are known as distributed energy resources. Their integration into distribution power systems not only contributes to improving operating aspects, but also allows supplying electricity to areas that do not have access to large-scale power systems. Therefore, the integration and management of these resources has become a topic of interest, and several studies seek to optimize their impact on technical, economic, and environmental aspects. However, this optimization poses specific challenges related to the type and number of variables related to the operation of a distribution power system. This review article aims to describe the main challenges posed by three-phase AC three-phase distribution power systems under scenarios involving the integration of distributed energy resources. In addition, it presents some approaches proposed by different authors to improve the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of power grids. It can be stated that the strategies presented in the literature fail to consider scenarios that simultaneously integrate different types of technologies and optimize them while following a multi-objective approach and considering three-phase systems in a context of variable generation and demand. Therefore, future work in this field should address these aspects in a holistic manner, taking into account the computation efforts and processing times required by intelligent algorithms.

Studying protein dynamics and conformational heterogeneity is crucial for understanding biomolecular systems and treating disease. Despite the deposition of over 215 000 macromolecular structures in the Protein Data Bank and the advent of AI-based structure prediction tools such as AlphaFold2, RoseTTAFold, and ESMFold, static representations are typically produced, which fail to fully capture macromolecular motion. Here, we discuss the importance of integrating experimental structures with computational clustering to explore the conformational landscapes that manifest protein function. We describe the method developed by the Protein Data Bank in Europe – Knowledge Base to identify distinct conformational states, demonstrate the resource's primary use cases, through examples, and discuss the need for further efforts to annotate protein conformations with functional information. Such initiatives will be crucial in unlocking the potential of protein dynamics data, expediting drug discovery research, and deepening our understanding of macromolecular mechanisms.

Abstract This paper proposes a single‐phase transformerless photovoltaic (PV) microinverter for low and medium‐voltage applications. The proposed approach comprises a suitable combination of multilevel boost/buck and H‐bridge topologies with a current‐sensorless control scheme, where the system controller only needs a straightforward‐to‐implement control loop to reach the desired attributes in solar PV conversion systems. Compared with other microinverters, this proposal significantly reduces the number of hardware components and required software resources, considerably attaining industrial and production advantages; guaranteeing: (i) a high DC elevation factor; (ii) an extraction of maximum power from solar PV panels; (iii) a multilevel output voltage; (iv) a low total harmonic distortion; and (v) a power factor close to unity. The multilevel microinverter's feasibility and effectiveness are assessed by a comprehensive mathematical model, whose simulation results are evaluated using MATLAB‐Simulink, and the experimental results are validated by means of an on‐grid low‐scale prototype, generating a power capacity of 1.5 kW.

Abstract Electrical power systems are continuously upgrading into networks with a higher degree of automation capable of identifying and reacting to different events that may trigger undesirable situations. In power systems with decreasing inertia and damping levels, poorly damped oscillations with sustained or growing amplitudes following a disturbance may eventually lead to instability and provoke a major event such as a blackout. Additionally, with the increasing and considerable share of renewable power generation, unprecedented operational challenges shall be considered when proposing protection schemes against unstable electro‐mechanical (e.g. ringdown) oscillations. In an emergency situation, islanding operations enable splitting a power network into separate smaller networks to prevent a total blackout. Due to such changes, identifying the underlying types of oscillatory coherency and the islanding protocols are necessary for a continuously updating process to be incorporated into the existing power system monitoring and control tasks. This paper examines the existing evaluation methods and the islanding protocols as well as proposes an updated operational guideline based on the latest data‐analytic technologies.

Energy management plays a pivotal role in enhancing the economic efficiency of power systems. However, it is noteworthy that a substantial number of microgrids (MGs) exhibit inherent unbalances that impose a range of critical issues, including voltage instability, elevated losses, power quality violations, safety concerns, and inefficiencies in energy management. Fast-acting power electronic converters present a relevant and efficacious solution for balancing such complex networks. This paper investigates the application of such converters within the realm of 3-phase unbalanced networks, wherein the proposed algorithm not only ameliorates network imbalances but also yields substantial reductions in operational costs, power losses, voltage deviations, and emissions. Demand response (DR) program has been applied to the model to enhance the system efficiency. The uncertainty about electric demand and renewable energy sources is considered in the simulation model for precise results. By implementing DR programs and penetrating distributed generators (DGs), the proposed model has been shown to reduce network losses and operation costs by 23% and 80%, respectively. Also, the total up-to-down voltage deviation of the voltage profile has been significantly reduced by 400%.

This work presents a distributed in-line strategy to manage an isolated microgrid by optimizing active and reactive power dispatch. The proposed objective function leads to minimize the operation costs and addresses some technical requirements such as diminishing power losses and voltage deviation. Additionally, the strategy deals with temporal multi-scale goals, i.e., robustness to demand disturbances and variation of renewable resources (a short-term objective), and preservation of the health of battery-based storage systems (a long-term objective). The technique uses alternating directions method of multipliers (ADMM), accelerated consensus, and a novel battery degradation model (Quadratic AH-Throughput model). We test the proposed solution in a case study that includes renewable resources and lead-acid and lithium batteries. To obtain the results of the case study, we employ a co-simulation scheme that uses Matlab and DIgSILENT. Finally, the performance of the method is compared with a centralized optimization technique.

Background: Although there are several efficacious vaccines against COVID-19, vaccination rates in many regions around the world remain insufficient to prevent continued high disease burden and emergence of viral variants. Repurposing of existing therapeutics that prevent or mitigate severe COVID-19 could help to address these challenges. The objective of this study was to determine whether prior use of bisphosphonates is associated with reduced incidence and/or severity of COVID-19. Methods: A retrospective cohort study utilizing payer-complete health insurance claims data from 8,239,790 patients with continuous medical and prescription insurance January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 was performed. The primary exposure of interest was use of any bisphosphonate from January 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020. Bisphosphonate users were identified as patients having at least one bisphosphonate claim during this period, who were then 1:1 propensity score-matched to bisphosphonate non-users by age, gender, insurance type, primary-care-provider visit in 2019, and comorbidity burden. Main outcomes of interest included: (a) any testing for SARS-CoV-2 infection; (b) COVID-19 diagnosis; and (c) hospitalization with a COVID-19 diagnosis between March 1, 2020 and June 30, 2020. Multiple sensitivity analyses were also performed to assess core study outcomes amongst more restrictive matches between BP users/non-users, as well as assessing the relationship between BP-use and other respiratory infections (pneumonia, acute bronchitis) both during the same study period as well as before the COVID outbreak. Results: A total of 7,906,603 patients for whom continuous medical and prescription insurance information was available were selected. A total of 450,366 bisphosphonate users were identified and 1:1 propensity score-matched to bisphosphonate non-users. Photovoltaic (PV) systems are a clean energy source that allows for power generation integration into electrical networks without destructive environmental effects. PV systems are usually integrated into electrical networks only to provide active power during the day, without taking full advantage of power electronics devices, which can compensate for the reactive power at any moment during their operation. These systems can also generate dynamic reactive power by means of voltage source converters, which are called PV-STATCOM devices. This paper presents a convex formulation for the optimal integration (placement and sizing) of PV-STATCOM devices in electrical distribution systems. The proposed model considers reducing the costs of the annual energy losses and installing PV-STATCOM devices. A convex formulation was obtained to transform the hyperbolic relation between the products of the voltage into a second-order constraint via relaxation. Two simulation cases in the two IEEE test systems (33- and 69-node) with radial and meshed topologies were implemented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mixed-integer convex model. The results show that PV-STATCOM devices reduce the annual cost of energy losses of electrical networks in a more significant proportion than PV systems alone.

BackgroundEpidemiological studies of interstitial lung disease (ILD) are limited by small numbers and tertiary care bias. Investigators have leveraged the widespread use of electronic health records (EHRs) to overcome these limitations, but struggle to extract patient-level, longitudinal clinical data needed to address many important research questions. We hypothesized that we could automate longitudinal ILD cohort development using the EHR of a large, community-based healthcare system.Study design and methodsWe applied a previously validated algorithm to the EHR of a community-based healthcare system to identify ILD cases between 2012-2020. We then extracted disease-specific characteristics and outcomes using fully automated data-extraction algorithms and natural language processing of selected free-text.ResultsWe identified a community cohort of 5,399 ILD patients (prevalence = 118 per 100,000). Pulmonary function tests (71%) and serologies (54%) were commonly used in the diagnostic evaluation, whereas lung biopsy was rare (5%). IPF was the most common ILD diagnosis (n = 972, 18%). Prednisone was the most commonly prescribed medication (911, 17%). Nintedanib and pirfenidone were rarely prescribed (n = 305, 5%). ILD patients were high-utilizers of inpatient (40%/year hospitalized) and outpatient care (80%/year with pulmonary visit), with sustained utilization throughout the post-diagnosis study period.DiscussionWe demonstrated the feasibility of robustly characterizing a variety of patient-level utilization and health services outcomes in a community-based EHR cohort. This represents a substantial methodological improvement by alleviating traditional constraints on the accuracy and clinical resolution of such ILD cohorts; we believe this approach will make community-based ILD research more efficient, effective, and scalable.

Power grids all over the world are transitioning towards a decentralized structure. Under such a transition, blockchain technology is emerging as a potential solution for technical, deployment and decentralization issues, given its security, integrity, decentralized nature and required infrastructure. Moreover, blockchain technology offers excellent features like non-repudiation and immutability which makes it a promising application for DER integration and management on reliability factors. In this paper, a comprehensive review of blockchain applications for DER management and integration is presented. First, a blockchain-based literature review of research activities in the DER integration area and related tasks including entrepreneurial efforts is carried out. Next, the different opportunities and challenges of DER integration and management in power grids, i.e., centralization, regulatory support, development costs are discussed. Finally, some key research challenges and opportunities of including blockchain technology to DER integration and management issues are presented.

Abstract In today's power grid, a great number of inverter‐based distributed energy resources (DERs) are connected and are mainly designed to supply power without considering the voltage and frequency deviations of the grid. Therefore, distribution system operators (DSOs) are challenged with an increase in grid events because of the random implementation of DERs. Voltage levels can vary beyond predefined limits at the point of connection and are currently not evaluated by DSOs. Summarized here is the development of a simulation model for evaluating the impact of support functions integrated in inverter‐based DERs. The model aims to help grid operators simulate voltage and frequency events and study the impact of DERs to the grid with respect to different settings of integrated support functions. A model is developed in MATLAB/Simulink conforming to European standards and regulations. Grid dynamics can be evaluated by imitating voltage and frequency deviations. Support functions can be either adjusted according to the situation or turned off. Together with adjustable settings according to DSO request, this model offers flexibility and insight in the capabilities of DERs to solve voltage and frequency issues. Case studies show that the model corresponds to expected behaviour and can be used for further development.

Abstract An experimental study of the inception of the first‐mode negative streamer at liquid/solid interfaces is presented in this article. The study is performed with a point‐plane configuration under square high voltage pulses. The electrode configuration is immersed in mineral oil and the liquid/solid interface is assembled in contact with the point electrode or in its vicinity. Four polymers and two impregnated papers have been tested as solids of the liquid/solid interface. Thus, it is possible to compare the influence of different parameter of the solid and the interface on the streamer inception. For example: Permittivity, solid surface roughness, chemical composition, etc. It has been observed that streamer inception voltages at interfaces with solids of higher permittivity to that of the mineral oil are statistically similar. Additionally, streamer inception voltages of streamer initiated free in the oil (no liquid/solid interface) are similar to that of the inception voltage of cases with solids with high permittivity. In contrast, the inception voltage of streamers initiated at permittivity matched interfaces are shown to be highest of the cases. The streamer inception voltage is also studied for different distances between the liquid/solid interface and the point electrode with a permittivity matched interface. The results show a dependency of the inception voltage and the distance between the point electrode and the interface. Finally, an analysis of the observation is performed to show that the Townsend‐Meek criterion cannot predict the obtained results.

Small bowel obstruction is a common surgical emergency and frequent cause of hospitalization. Internal hernias account for less than 6% of all small bowel obstruction cases. Less frequently, hernias through the broad ligament of the uterus can occur and account for only 4-7% of total internal hernia cases. We report a case of a small bowel hernia through broad ligament of the uterus in a young female. Multiple diagnostic modalities suggested a ruptured ovarian cyst as the most probable cause for her abdominal pain. However, her symptoms were much more severe than an ovarian cyst would normally produce. Therefore, a diagnostic laparotomy was performed, which found a small intestine hernia through the left broad ligament of the uterus. The diagnosis of intestinal hernias, specifically through the broad ligament, is often delayed due to the infrequent occurrence, varied presentation, and difficulty of confirmation on computed tomography (CT) scan. Surgery is the gold standard for the diagnosis and treatment of internal hernias. This article draws attention toward a rare and potentially life-threatening cause of abdominal pain.

Histoplasmosis is an endemic infection of Ecuador, its forms of presentation can be varied and florid, especially in immunosuppressed patients, its lethality is high, hence its diagnosis and treatment should be based on both clinical and laboratory results. Cutaneous histoplasmosis is a form of disseminated Histoplasma capsulatum infection rarely described in HIV patients. The following is a description of the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with generalized papular skin lesions, heat stroke, diarrhea, attributed to adverse reaction of gastritis treatment of 10 days of evolution, this was associated with a recent diagnosis of HIV infection following his admission to hospital.

Abstract The conventional structure of operating transmission and distribution systems is currently experiencing new challenges in maintaining the system operability with the significant changes such renewable energy sources inclusion, technology development, infrastructure revolution, and services provision. A futuristic operation management paradigm at the high level of interaction between Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs) is presented that supports the usage of flexibility services to simplify the congestion management, and ancillary services procurement by involving the DSO actively in the DSO‐TSO boundaries and the downstream network. The architecture considers new actors such as Distributed Services Aggregator, Prosumers, and Services Market Operators. A comparison between the typical grid structure (including the short‐term smart grid requirements) and the proposed one is presented considering different actors and interactions involved in the operation management of the grid. The opportunities and challenges of the proposed architecture are discussed.

Abstract Background Scientists communicate progress and exchange information via publication and presentation at scientific meetings. We previously showed that text similarity analysis applied to Medline can identify and quantify plagiarism and duplicate publications in peer-reviewed biomedical journals. In the present study, we applied the same analysis to a large sample of conference abstracts. Methods We downloaded 144,149 abstracts from 207 national and international meetings of 63 biomedical conferences. Pairwise comparisons were made using eTBLAST: a text similarity engine. A domain expert then reviewed random samples of highly similar abstracts (1500 total) to estimate the extent of text overlap and possible plagiarism. Results Our main findings indicate that the vast majority of textual overlap occurred within the same meeting (2%) and between meetings of the same conference (3%), both of which were significantly higher than instances of plagiarism, which occurred in less than .5% of abstracts. Conclusions This analysis indicates that textual overlap in abstracts of papers presented at scientific meetings is one-tenth that of peer-reviewed publications, yet the plagiarism rate is approximately the same as previously measured in peer-reviewed publications. This latter finding underscores a need for monitoring scientific meeting submissions – as is now done when submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals – to improve the integrity of scientific communications.

Abstract Background To date, there is no effective treatment for COVID-19, which is a pandemic disease, caused by a novel coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. In Togo, where four in five people practice self-medication, the absence of a cure for COVID-19 and the constant progression of the disease requires an assessment of self-medication patterns in the context of the pandemic. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of self-medication to prevent COVID-19 and its associated factors in Lomé, Togo. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Lomé, the capital city of Togo, from April 23rd to May 8th, 2020, with a sample of participants from five sectors: the healthcare, air transport, police, road transport and informal sectors. The participants were invited to provide information about their self-medication practices to prevent COVID-19 in the 2 weeks preceding the survey. Results A total of 955 participants (71.6% men) with a median age of 36 (IQR 32–43) were included. Approximately 22.1% were in the air transport sector, 20.5% were in the police sector, and 38.7% were in the health sector. The overall prevalence of self-medication to prevent COVID-19 was 34.2% (95% CI: 31.2–37.3%). The most commonly used products were vitamin C (27.6%) and traditional medicine (10.2%). The heat dissipation factor of conventional epoxy impregnated paper bushings is a subject of concern due to the large quantities of power in a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system. The present work deals with the selection of better insulation as a replacement to the conventional resin impregnated material employing nano-hexagonal-Boron Nitride and nano-hexagonal-Boron Nitride added with nano-cellulose-fiber. The bushing of the converter transformer is designed using the Finite Element Method (FEM), and the electrothermal analysis is performed at the loaded working condition. Besides, numerous optimization schemes are also presented for adapting the structure of the thermal conductor enclosed in the inner conductor. The electrothermal performances of the above materials with the optimized structure are compared and an advanced scheme is proposed. Further, the results obtained from the designed system are employed in the form of an Artificial Neural Network to simplify the process of thermal computation characterized by the selected scheme. The internal parameters of the neural network are tuned implementing a hybrid amalgamation of Particle Swarm optimization - Grey Wolf Optimiser and the performance is compared against the actual values. The supremacy of the implemented algorithm is justified by a comparative analysis with other well-established algorithms using various statistical parameters.

Abstract Background Medical treatment informed by Precision Medicine is becoming a standard practice for many diseases, and patients are curious about the consequences of genomic variants in their genome. However, most medical students’ understanding of Precision Medicine derives from classroom lectures. This format does little to foster an understanding for the potential and limitations of Precision Medicine. To close this gap, we implemented a hands-on Precision Medicine training program utilizing exome sequencing to prepare a clinical genetic report of cadavers studied in the anatomy lab. The program reinforces Precision Medicine related learning objectives for the Genetics curriculum. Methods Pre-embalmed blood samples and embalmed tissue were obtained from cadavers (donors) used in the anatomy lab. DNA was isolated and sequenced and illustrative genetic reports provided to the students. The reports were used to facilitate discussion with students on the implications of pathogenic genomic variants and the potential correlation of these variants in each “donor” with any anatomical anomalies identified during cadaver dissection. Results In 75% of cases, analysis of whole exome sequencing data identified a variant associated with increased risk for a disease/abnormal condition noted in the donor’s cause of death or in the students’ anatomical findings. This provided students with real-world examples of the potential relationship between genomic variants and disease risk. Our students also noted that diseases associated with 92% of the pathogenic variants identified were not related to the anatomical findings, demonstrating the limitations of Precision Medicine. Conclusion With this study, we have established protocols and classroom procedures incorporating hands-on Precision Medicine training in the medical student curriculum and a template for other medical educators interested in enhancing their Precision Medicine training program. The program engaged students in discovering variants that were associated with the pathophysiology of the cadaver they were studying, which led to more exposure and understanding of the potential risks and benefits of genomic medicine.

There are limited epidemiologic studies describing the global burden and geographic heterogeneity of interstitial lung disease (ILD) subtypes. We found that among seventeen methodologically heterogenous studies that examined the incidence, prevalence and relative frequencies of ILDs, the incidence of ILD ranged from 1 to 31.5 per 100,000 person-years and prevalence ranged from 6.3 to 71 per 100,000 people. In North America and Europe, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and sarcoidosis were the most prevalent ILDs while the relative frequency of hypersensitivity pneumonitis was higher in Asia, particularly in India (10.7–47.3%) and Pakistan (12.6%). The relative frequency of connective tissue disease ILD demonstrated the greatest geographic variability, ranging from 7.5% of cases in Belgium to 33.3% of cases in Canada and 34.8% of cases in Saudi Arabia. These differences may represent true differences based on underlying characteristics of the source populations or methodological differences in disease classification and patient recruitment (registry vs. population-based cohorts). There are three areas where we feel addition work is needed to better understand the global burden of ILD. First, a standard ontology with diagnostic confidence thresholds for comparative epidemiology studies of ILD is needed. Second, more globally representative data should be published in English language journals as current literature has largely focused on Europe and North America with little data from South America, Africa and Asia. Third, the inclusion of community-based cohorts that leverage the strength of large databases can help better estimate population burden of disease. These large, community-based longitudinal cohorts would also allow for tracking of global trends and be a valuable resource for collective study. We believe the ILD research community should organize to define a shared ontology for disease classification and commit to conducting global claims and electronic health record based epidemiologic studies in a standardized fashion. Aggregating and sharing this type of data would provide a unique opportunity for international collaboration as our understanding of ILD continues to grow and evolve. Better understanding the geographic and temporal patterns of disease prevalence and identifying clusters of ILD subtypes will facilitate improved understanding of emerging risk factors and help identify targets for future intervention.

Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) is responsible for hemorrhagic gastroenteritis in dogs worldwide. High genomic substitution rates in CPV-2 contribute to the progressive emergence of novel variants with increased ability to evade the host immune response. Three studies have analyzed the genomic mutations of CPV-2 variants in Thailand. These investigations were independently conducted at different timepoints. Thus, a retrospective integrated analysis of CPV-2 genomic mutations has not been fully performed. Our study aimed at evaluating the evolutionary changes in CPV-2 in Thailand from 2003 to 2019. Two hundred and sixty-eight Thai CPV-2 nucleotide sequences were used for multiple amino acid sequence alignment and phylogenetic analyses. From 2003 to 2010, CPV-2a and -2b were the only variants detected. CPV-2c, emerged in 2014, replacing CPV-2a and -2b, and has become a major variant in 2019. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the proposed mutation pattern of VP2 amino acid residues could help distinguish Thai CPV-2 variants. This comprehensive examination provides insight into the genomic evolution of CPV-2 in Thailand since its first reporting in 2003, which may facilitate the surveillance of the potential genetic alteration of emergent CPV-2 variants.

Background: Acute exacerbation of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (AE-IPF) is a severe complication associated with a high mortality. However, evidence and guidance on management is sparse. The aim of this international survey was to assess differences in prevention, diagnostic and treatment strategies for AE-IPF in specialised and non-specialised ILD centres worldwide.Material and Methods: Pulmonologists working in specialised and non-specialised ILD centres were invited to participate in a survey designed by an international expert panel. Responses were evaluated in respect to the physicians' institutions.Results: Three hundred and two (65%) of the respondents worked in a specialised ILD centre, 134 (29%) in a non-specialised pulmonology centre. Similarities were frequent with regards to diagnostic methods including radiology and screening for infection, treatment with corticosteroids, use of high-flow oxygen and non-invasive ventilation in critical ill patients and palliative strategies. However, differences were significant in terms of the use of KL-6 and pathogen testing in urine, treatments with cyclosporine and recombinant thrombomodulin, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in critical ill patients as well as antacid medication and anaesthesia measures as preventive methods.Conclusion: Despite the absence of recommendations, approaches to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of AE-IPF are comparable in specialised and non-specialised ILD centres, yet certain differences in the managements of AE-IPF exist. Clinical trials and guidelines are needed to improve patient care and prognosis in AE-IPF.

This paper develops and analyzes four energy scenarios for Colombia that consider the El Niño phenomenon and the inclusion of renewable energies in the energy generation matrix for the period 2020–2035. A comparative analysis is presented between the results of the different scenarios proposed. The most relevant finding is the use of the reserve margin as an indicator of system reliability. A scenario which included 7214 MW of large-scale non-conventional renewable energy, 10,000 MW of distributed generation, and 12,240 MW of hydroelectric power was assumed, with a reserve margin of over 50%. Additionally, it was found that for the scenarios in which a generation capacity with non-conventional renewable energies of less than 10,000 MW in 2034 was assumed, the reserve margin of the system in the seasons of the El Niño phenomenon will be less than historical records of the system. Alternatively, it was found that the scenarios in which the inclusion of at least 9600 MW of the electric power generation capacity of non-conventional renewable energies proposed by 2034 offer benefits in the reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which contributes to the achievement of the emission reduction objectives of the Paris Agreement.

The need for Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) is rising as renewable energy sources become more prevalent in power networks since the rate of change of frequency is being deteriorated. Appropriate and accurate network measurements are a requirement for the precise monitoring and control of the system. This paper presents a low-cost PMU development, the so-called PhasorsCatcher, for the frequency and rate of change of frequency measurements in power networks, using sufficient but straightforward modular and reconfigurable friendly technology for its implementation. The entire hardware design, schematics, and instrumentation components are shown. Moreover, the visualisation has been calibrated and verified through an experimentation set-up and the existing electrical and communication standards.

Introduction In vitro fertilisation (IVF) has evolved as an intervention of choice to help couples with infertility to conceive. In the last decade, a strategy change in the day of embryo transfer has been developed. Many IVF centres choose nowadays to transfer at later stages of embryo development, for example, transferring embryos at blastocyst stage instead of cleavage stage. However, it still is not known which embryo transfer policy in IVF is more efficient in terms of cumulative live birth rate (cLBR), following a fresh and the subsequent frozen–thawed transfers after one oocyte retrieval. Furthermore, studies reporting on obstetric and neonatal outcomes from both transfer policies are limited.Methods and analysis We have set up a multicentre randomised superiority trial in the Netherlands, named the Three or Fivetrial. We plan to include 1200 women with an indication for IVF with at least four embryos available on day 2 after the oocyte retrieval. Women are randomly allocated to either (1) control group: embryo transfer on day 3 and cryopreservation of supernumerary good-quality embryos on day 3 or 4, or (2) intervention group: embryo transfer on day 5 and cryopreservation of supernumerary good-quality embryos on day 5 or 6. The primary outcome is the cLBR per oocyte retrieval. Secondary outcomes include LBR following fresh transfer, multiple pregnancy rate and time until pregnancy leading a live birth. We will also assess the obstetric and neonatal outcomes, costs and patients’ treatment burden.Ethics and dissemination The study protocol has been approved by the Central Committee on Research involving Human Subjects in the Netherlands in June 2018 (CCMO NL 64060.000.18). The results of this trial will be submitted for publication in international peer-reviewed and in open access journals.Trial registration number Netherlands Trial Register (NL 6857).

The increased use of distributed energy resources, especially electrical energy storage systems (EESS), has led to greater flexibility and complexity in power grids, which has led to new challenges in the operation of these systems, with particular emphasis on frequency regulation. To this end, the transmission system operator in Great Britain has designed a control scheme known as Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) that is especially attractive for its implementation in EESS. This paper proposes a Type-2 fuzzy control system that enables the provision of EFR service from a battery energy storage system in order to improve the state-of-charge (SoC) management while providing EFR service from operating scenarios during working and off-duty days. The performance of the proposed controller is compared with a conventional FLC and PID controllers with similar features. The results showed that in all scenarios, but especially under large frequency deviations, the proposed controller presents a better SoC management in comparison without neglecting the EFR service provision.

Electricity markets provide valuable data for regulators, operators, and investors. The use of machine learning methods for electricity market data could provide new insights about the market, and this information could be used for decision-making. This paper proposes a tool based on multi-output regression method using support vector machines (SVR) for LMP forecasting. The input corresponds to the active power load of each bus, in this case obtained through Monte Carlo simulations, in order to forecast LMPs. The LMPs provide market signals for investors and regulators. The results showed the high performance of the proposed model, since the average prediction error for fitting and testing datasets of the proposed method on the dataset was less than 1%. This provides insights into the application of machine learning method for electricity markets given the context of uncertainty and volatility for either real-time and ahead markets.

Space-filling curves have been used for decades to study the folding principles of globular proteins, compact polymers, and chromatin. Formally, space-filling curves trace a single circuit through a set of points (x,y,z); informally, they correspond to a polymer melt. Although not quite a melt, the folding principles of Human chromatin are likened to the Hilbert curve: a type of space-filling curve. Hilbert-like curves in general make biologically compelling models of chromatin; in particular, they lack knots which facilitates chromatin folding, unfolding, and easy access to genes. Knot complexity has been intensely studied with the aid of Alexander polynomials; however, the approach does not generalize well to cases of more than one chromosome. Crossing complexity is an understudied alternative better suited for quantifying entanglement between chromosomes. Do Hilbert-like configurations limit crossing complexity between chromosomes? How does crossing complexity for Hilbert-like configurations compare to equilibrium configurations? To address these questions, we extend the Mansfield algorithm to enable sampling of Hilbert-like space filling curves on a simple cubic lattice. We use the extended algorithm to generate equilibrium, intermediate, and Hilbert-like configurational ensembles and compute crossing complexity between curves (chromosomes) in each configurational snapshot. Our main results are twofold: (a) Hilbert-like configurations limit entanglement between chromosomes and (b) Hilbert-like configurations do not limit entanglement in a model of S-phase DNA. Our second result is particularly surprising yet easily rationalized with a geometric argument. We explore ergodicity of the extended algorithm and discuss our results in the context of more sophisticated models of chromatin.
