Abstract Aggregate stability is a critical physical indicator of soil health. However, multiple methods are used for measuring aggregate stability, making it difficult to compare results and limiting universal interpretations in soil health assessment frameworks like Soil Health Assessment Protocol and Evaluation. We cross‐correlated three common water‐stable aggregate methods (WSACASH, WSAARS, and WSASLAKES) using a dataset of nearly 1400 samples and developed pedotransfer functions using random forest models to evaluate method performance. We found that the WSAARS and WSACASH methods can be reasonably cross correlated through pedotransfer functions because they use similar processes for estimating aggregate strength. Conversely, the WSAARS and WSASLAKES methods are not transferable. We suggest that the WSAARS aggregate stability method is the most established and best reference method for use in soil health analysis frameworks. Interpretation consistency will lead to more robust comparisons of aggregate stability as a key physical soil health indicator. Core Ideas Different approaches for measuring aggregate stability prevent generalized result interpretation. The water‐stable aggregate wet sieve procedure (WSAARS) is proposed as the reference method for interpretation. Other soil aggregate stability methods can be variably correlated with WSAARS.

Purpose This paper aims to deepen understanding and knowledge regarding the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the industrialization process. Many developing countries aspire to shift from agriculture-centric economies to achieve sustainable development through industrialization. Realizing this goal, however, has been challenging, prompting an examination of the sixty-year trends and effects of FDI on Tanzania’s industrialization trajectory.Methodology This study employs a comprehensive approach utilizing time series models, specifically the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model and the Error Correction Model (ECM), to analyze the dynamic influence of FDI on industrialization. By forecasting the five-year trajectory of industrial growth and FDI inflows using data from the Bank of Tanzania and the National Bureau of Statistics spanning 1960 to 2020, this methodological framework aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the FDI-industrialization relationship, contributing valuable insights to the economic development discourse.Findings The study’s results highlight the significant role of FDI in shaping both short- and long-term industrial progress, which is critical to advancing Tanzania’s industrialization goals. Conversely, factors like exchange rates predominantly impact the short-term industrial landscape. Forecasts from the analysis indicate a projected decline in both FDI and industrialization from 2020 to 2022, followed by a notable upturn from 2022 to 2025. This underscores FDI as a key driver for integrating agriculture-based economies into global value chains, facilitating economic upgrading through capital accumulation—a fundamental catalyst for sustained industrialization.

Background: Although the current combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy is used in the breast-cancer setting, the administration of the anticancer drugs doxorubicin and trastuzumab is associated with an increased risk of developing heart failure. The aim of this study is to determine whether dietary flaxseed is comparable and/or synergistic with the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor perindopril in the treatment of doxorubicin- and trastuzumab-mediated cardiotoxicity. Methods: In a chronic in vivo murine model (n = 110), doxorubicin and trastuzumab (8 mg/kg and 3 mg/kg, respectively) were administered weekly for 3 weeks. Following this period, the mice were randomized to daily consumption of a 10% flaxseed supplemented diet, administration of perindopril (3 mg/kg) via oral gavage, or a combination of both flaxseed and perindopril for an additional 3 weeks. Results: In mice treated with doxorubicin and trastuzumab, the left ventricular ejection fraction decreased from 74% ± 4% at baseline to 30% ± 2% at week 6. Treatment with either flaxseed or perindopril, or with flaxseed and perindopril improved left ventricular ejection fraction to 52% ± 4%, 54% ± 4%, and 55% ± 3%, respectively (P < 0.05). Although histologic analyses confirmed significant loss of sarcomere integrity and vacuolization in the doxorubicin- and trastuzumab-treated mice, treatment with flaxseed or perindopril, or with flaxseed and perindopril improved myocyte integrity. Finally, the level of Bcl-2 interacting protein 3, high-mobility group box 1 protein expression, and the levels of select oxylipins, were significantly elevated in mice receiving doxorubicin and trastuzumab; these markers were attenuated by treatment with either flaxseed or perindopril, or with flaxseed and perindopril. Conclusions: Flaxseed was equivalent to perindopril at improving cardiovascular remodelling by reducing biomarkers of inflammation, mitochondrial damage, and cell death. Résumé: Contexte: Si l’association actuelle de la chirurgie, de la radiothérapie et de la chimiothérapie est utilisée pour le traitement du cancer du sein, on observe néanmoins que l’administration de la doxorubicine et du trastuzumab, deux anticancéreux, augmente les risques d’insuffisance cardiaque. Cette étude vise à déterminer si les graines de lin alimentaires ont un effet comparable et/ou synergique à celui du périndopril, un inhibiteur de l’enzyme de conversion de l’angiotensine, dans le traitement de la cardiotoxicité liée à la doxorubicine et au trastuzumab. Méthodologie: Dans un modèle murin chronique in vivo (n = 110), la doxorubicine et le trastuzumab (8 mg/kg et 3 mg/kg, respectivement) ont été administrés une fois par semaine pendant trois semaines. Après cette période, les souris ont été réparties de façon aléatoire dans trois groupes : l’un recevant tous les jours un régime alimentaire contenant 10 % de graines de lin, un autre recevant du périndopril (3 mg/kg) par gavage oral et un troisième recevant à la fois des graines de lin et du périndopril pendant trois semaines supplémentaires. Résultats: Chez les souris recevant la doxorubicine et le trastuzumab, la fraction d’éjection ventriculaire gauche est passée de 74 % ± 4 % au départ à 30 % ± 2 % à la semaine 6. Avec le traitement par les graines de lin seules, le périndopril seul ou les graines de lin et le périndopril en association, la fraction d’éjection ventriculaire gauche est passée à 52 % ± 4 %, à 54 % ± 4 % et à 55 % ± 3 %, respectivement (p < 0,05). Bien que les analyses histologiques aient permis de confirmer une perte significative de l’intégrité des sarcomères et une vacuolisation chez les souris recevant la doxorubicine et le trastuzumab, le traitement par les graines de lin seules, le périndopril seul ou les graines de lin et le périndopril en association a amélioré l’intégrité des myocytes. Enfin, les taux de protéine 3 interagissant avec BCL-2, l’expression de la protéine HMGB1 (high-mobility group box 1) et les taux de certaines oxylipines étaient significativement élevés chez les souris recevant la doxorubicine et le trastuzumab. Ces marqueurs ont été atténués par les graines de lin, le périndopril ou l’association des deux. Conclusions: En diminuant les biomarqueurs de l’inflammation, les dommages aux mitochondries et la mort cellulaire, les graines de lin ont un effet équivalant à celui du périndopril quant à l’amélioration du remodelage cardiovasculaire.

Photovoltaic-Thermoelectric Generator (PV-TEG) system has emerged as a promising approach to significantly enhance the efficiency of conventional PV cells. However, optimizing the performance of these hybrid systems presents a formidable challenge due to their complex structure and multitude of design parameters. This study tackles such challenge by developing a machine learning based Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model which comprises two sub-ANN models that can work independently for PV and TEG modules or in combination through a cyclic approach for the hybrid PV-TEG system. The model demonstrates remarkable versatility, allowing control over various parameters such as PV coating, device geometry, and environmental conditions. Compared to COMSOL simulations, the ANN model achieves over 97.6 % accuracy with a 6000-fold increase in simulation speed, enabling extensive parameter sweeps and insightful system analysis. Within 18 min, the model conducted a real-time simulation using 8712 weather data entries from Singapore in 2022 and predicted that the hybrid PV-TEG system would generate a total power of 265 kWh/m2, 6.4 % more than that of the standalone PV system with an average system temperature reduction of 7 K. The model's rapid processing capabilities and high accuracy are particularly beneficial for large-scale simulations and practical applications in renewable energy technology.

Seasonal variations directly impact the biochemical and microbial properties of the soil, influence carbon and nutrient cycling within the soil system. Soils under tree plantation (TP) are rich in organic matter and microbial population, making them more susceptible to seasonal variation. We studied the effect of seasonal variations in soil chemical properties (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N ratio etc) and microclimate (moisture and temperature) on microbial respiration (SR), biomass, and carbon (C) utilization efficiency under 13 years old Kadamb (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq.), Simaraubha (Simarouba glauca DC), and Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) based TPs in middle Gangetic region. In contrast to higher SR and metabolic quotient (qCO2) in winter, the microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) in fall > summer > spring > winter, irrespective of TPs. The positive relationship between qCO2 and C/N ratios strongly supports the dependence of microbes on soil carbon for respiration. qCO2 had a significantly positive relationship with soil moisture (MC) and Electrical conductivity (EC), but a significantly negative relationship with temperature and pH. Higher MBN/TN and MBC/TOC ratios fall under simaraubha, and litchi-based TPs indicated more nitrogen (N) and carbon accumulation into microbial biomass. The seasonal variation of MBC/MBN ratios signifies the changes in microbial communities and fungi dominate over bacteria during winter, as bacteria have a lower C/N ratio than fungi. Stepwise regression analysis suggested that soil properties and micro-climate regulated microbial biomass and SR differ with TPs. Thus, the study indicates that microbial activities and biomass production can significantly influence by soil properties and seasonal variations under TPs.

BackgroundMetrology plays a crucial role in small healthcare service businesses to ensure the quality of products and services. While legal metrology in healthcare exists in some regions, it lacks harmonization. In other countries, there is limited presence of metrology in medical and biomedical engineering. We aimed to evaluate the implementation of metrological assurance systems for medical devices in Latin America.MethodsA systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines and registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022359284). Searches were performed across 13 databases from October 30th to November 3rd, 2022. The search equation was “(((quality assurance) AND (metrology)) AND (medical devices)).” A total of 7,789 documents were identified, of which only 16 met the inclusion criteria.ResultsThe majority of studies (75%) were conducted in Colombia, with a significant portion being undergraduate theses. The primary normative references used in the analyzed studies were ISO 10012 and ISO 17025, with the majority (68.75%) relying on national legislation for their approach. One study in Colombia referenced eight standards, and one in Brazil analyzed user involvement in medical device management. Among the included studies, 56.25% were conducted in healthcare institutions, mainly clinics. Most studies provided implementation guidelines, with ISO 10012 being prominent, alongside ISO 17025, which implicitly addresses ISO 9001 elements. Global bias was low across all studies.ConclusionOur results underscore the importance of metrological assurance in managing medical devices in Latin America. The utilization of international standards and national legislation illustrates the diverse approaches adopted by different institutions. Future research should focus on optimizing metrological practices to enhance quality and safety in healthcare.

This study describes morphological characteristics of pen shells collected along the coast of northern Iloilo, Philippines. A total of 380 pen shell individuals with intact shells and their adductor muscles were carefully examined and measured. Eleven species were studied, namely: Atrina pectinata (Linnaeus, 1767), Atrina inflata (Dillwyn, 1817), Atrina vexillum (Born, 1778), Atrina seminuda (Lamarck, 1819), Atrina rigida ([Lightfoot], 1786), Pinna bicolor Gmelin, 1791, Pinna atropurpurea Sowerby, 1825, Pinna deltodes Menke, 1843, Pinna muricata Linnaeus, 1758, Pinna incurva Gmelin, 1791, and Pinna nobilis Linnaeus, 1758. The species were identified based on the nine characteristics of the valve for the genus Pinna and eight for the genus Atrina. These characteristics were then correlated with their adductor muscles’ morphology. Analysis of variance revealed that the three most dominant species investigated under genus Atrina, namely Atrina pectinata, Atrina inflata, and Atrina vexillum, were found to be significantly different in the eight characters of the valve (P < 0.05). Moreover, three representative Pinna species, Pinna bicolor, Pinna atropurpurea, and Pinna deltodes, were significantly (P < 0.05) different based on shell width, dorsal posterior shell margin, sulcus width, and dorsal posterior margin to dorsal nacreous margin. The observed high correlation (P < 0.05) between adductor muscle properties and different shell length characteristics for five dominant species can be used as a predictor of growth and suggests that the increase in the size of adductor muscle correlates to the increase in the size of the mentioned shell characteristics. No previous study of this kind was conducted in the Philippines. This work provides relevant information for related biological research on other pen shell species and for the management of pen shell resources in northern Iloilo and, possibly, other regions in the world.

Objectives: Limited data on performing bilateral pulmonary artery banding (BPAB) before stage 1 Norwood procedure suggest that some patients may benefit through the postponement of the major cardiopulmonary bypass procedure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of BPAB in the surgical management of high-risk patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Methods: A retrospective review of all high-risk neonates with HLHS who underwent BPAB at our institution was performed. No patients, including those with intact or highly restrictive atrial septum (IAS), were excluded. Results: Between October 2015 and April 2021, 49 neonates with HLHS (including 6 with IAS) underwent BPAB, 40 of whom progressed to the Norwood procedure. Risk factors for not progressing to the Norwood procedure after BPAP include low birth weight (P = .043), the presence of multiple extracardiac anomalies (P = .005), and the presence of genetic disorders (P = .028). Operative mortality was 7.5% (3/40). IAS was associated with operative mortality (P = .022). Conclusions: The strategy of BPAB prestage 1 Norwood procedure was successful in identifying at-risk patients and improving Norwood survival. Although not all patients will need this hybrid approach, a significant number can be expected to benefit from this tactic. These results support the need for a substantial hybrid strategy, in addition to a primary stage 1 Norwood surgical strategy, in the management of HLHS.

Abstract Optogenetic tools can provide fine spatial and temporal control over many biological processes. Yet the development of new light-switchable protein variants remains challenging, and the field still lacks general approaches to engineering or discovering protein variants with light-switchable biological functions. Here, we adapt strategies for protein domain insertion and mammalian-cell expression to generate and screen a library of candidate optogenetic tools directly in mammalian cells. The approach is based on insertion of the AsLOV2 photoswitchable domain at all possible positions in a candidate protein of interest, introduction of the library into mammalian cells, and light/dark selection for variants with photoswitchable activity. We demonstrate the approach’s utility using the Gal4-VP64 transcription factor as a model system. Our resulting LightsOut transcription factor exhibits a > 150-fold change in transcriptional activity between dark and blue light conditions. We show that light-switchable function generalizes to analogous insertion sites in two additional Cys6Zn2 and C2H2 zinc finger domains, providing a starting point for optogenetic regulation of a broad class of transcription factors. Our approach can streamline the identification of single-protein optogenetic switches, particularly in cases where structural or biochemical knowledge is limited.
