- Abstract
Overturning the inherited belief that popular music is unrefined, Form as Harmony in Rock Music brings the process-based approach of classical theorists to popular music scholarship. Author Drew Nobile offers the first comprehensive theory of form for 1960s, 70s, and 80s classic rock repertoire, showing how songs in this genre are not simply a series of discrete elements, but rather exhibit cohesive formal-harmonic structures across their entire timespan. Though many elements contribute to the cohesion of a song, the rock music of these decades is built around a fundamentally harmonic backdrop, giving rise to distinct types of verses, choruses, and bridges. Nobile's rigorous but readable theoretical analysis demonstrates how artists from Bob Dylan to Stevie Wonder to Madonna consistently turn to the same compositional structures throughout rock's various genres and decades, unifying them under a single musical style. Using over 200 transcriptions, graphs, and form charts, Form as Harmony in Rock Music advocates a structural approach to rock analysis, revealing essential features of this style that would otherwise remain below our conscious awareness.

AESTHETICS , *POETRY (Literary form) - Abstract
This article deals - on the one hand- with the aesthetics of the use of external correspondence in oral poetic discourse. The sample comes from the Souf region, considered as one of the strongholds of popular poetry in Algeria, whose meanings and words are extracted from various missing texts between popular poetry, the Holy Quran, the Hadith and sayings and proverbs. The fundamental problem in this use lies between the knowledge by the poets of the missing texts and their impact on them, and the similarity between the missing texts and the present texts without prior knowledge of the later poets. SOLAR radiation , *NUMERICAL weather forecasting - Abstract
The study tests and further develops a previously presented method for adjusting initial clouds in the HARMONIE mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. The method uses satellite-observed cloud properties from the Nowcasting and very short range forecasting Satellite Application Facility (NWCSAF) together with ground-based synoptic stations (SYNOP) observations, adjusting the humidity profile of the model based on the available cloud information with the overall aim to improve the forecast, in particular as regards clouds and solar radiation. A reference set-up of the HARMONIE model is used as a baseline against which the cloud initialization experiments are compared. All HARMONIE experiments are run for July 2016, with a model run starting at 06Z each day. The HARMONIE outputs are compared with cloud fraction and solar radiation observations from groundbased stations, while satellite cloud observations are also used for inspecting the behaviour of the forecasts. The performance of other generally used verification parameters is also studied. The results as regards clouds are encouraging. Symmetrical extremal dependence index (SEDI) skill scores show improvement in initial cloud conditions in 84% and 74% of the cases, when evaluated for cloud-free (0–1 octas) and cloudy conditions (7–8 octas), respectively. The improvement lasts 2–4 hr into the forecast. Other parameters, however, show somewhat degraded skill as compared with the reference model run, while for solar radiation, the cloud initialization scheme exhibits somewhat ambiguous results. The distribution of solar radiation values is improved for relatively sunny conditions, while at the other end of the distribution, the cloud initialization scheme produces too many cases with relatively strongly attenuated radiation. SMALL business , *FAMILY-owned business enterprises , *STOCK exchanges , *PRIVATE sector - Abstract
Faced with the current economies, characterised by a combination of complex factors, competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SME) in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo has become a necessity for the the sustainability of the private sector. In spite of the prevalence of family businesses in several countries in the sub-Saharan Africa and their proven role in developing economies, operational issues of familiarism and performance are not still clearly elucidated in the context of SME family businesses, nor submitted to the stock market. The objective of this study was to elucidate and operationalise the “ family effect “and” performance “ in the context of SME which are not subjected to the stock market as perceived by family entrepreneurs. Applying the inter-site comparison case study method on the basis of semi-structured interviews organised with 32 family entrepreneurs from two towns and two cities in the provinces of North and South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the results indicate that, apart from the deeply modified family effect indicators, the dimensions of the construct are identical to previous works. Meanwhile, the performance perceived by economic operators greatly diverges from theoretical considerations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NORMATIVITY (Ethics) , *HUMAN beings , *DECISION making , *ETHICS , *HUMANITY - Abstract
Diversity is part of what we call being human. We need an integrated crosscultural approach to ethics. We should never expect all people to balance the same values in the same way all the time. Nevertheless, there are numerous benefits if the same values, or principles, can be used by all people and societies. All human beings are found as members of some society but all accommodate some individualism within a social niche. All societies have ethical norms and some system of ethics. Any international ethical approach to assisting people and systems to making bioethical decisions must consider the biological, social and spiritual origins of humanity. In this fashion, the focus of this article is to address the fundamental question of whether or not a common ethical system could be accepted and applied universally as well as what consequences this could have for biolaw. 21. Clouds in HARMONIE: The role of shallow convection parametrization on meso-scale cloud organization

- Abstract
Clouds play a crucial role in Earth’s systems, influencing the radiation budget and the hydrological cycle. However, their dynamics are poorly represented in climate models, leading to uncertainties in predicting global temperature changes. To better understand cloud dynamics and improve model parametrizations, the large-scale field campaign EUREC4A focused on studying cloud organization and its potential impact on climate feedback in the North Atlantic trade-wind region, where shallow marine cumulus clouds are prevalent. Within the EUREC4A framework, this study focuses on cloud fields and organization in the HARMONIE weather model to assess the impact of shallow convective parametrizations on its outputs. By comparing three experiments denominated as ’HARMONIE noHGTQS’, HARMONIE noHGTQS noSHAL’ and ’HARMONIE noHGTQS noUVmix’ one can identify discrepancies and determine what the impact of the various shallow convective parametrizations are. Several cloud organization metrics have been computed for the HARMONIE experiments as well as GOES-16 satellite snapshots. The results show that none of the experiments precisely capture the observed diurnal patterns successfully. There exist disparities in cloud cover, cloud quantity, cloud sizes, and the organization index. Removing shallow convective parametrization partly improves the representation of clouds. It exhibits a stronger correlation with the observed cloud cover data from ceilometer measurements and demonstrates a higher capability to replicate the amount of cloud entities seen in observations in comparison to the other experiments. Furthermore, disabling shallow convection leads to instability and deeper clouds. On the other hand momentum mixing alone has a small impact on clouds, yet it alters wind patterns, resulting in reduced speeds, and little production of precipitation. Overall the model struggles to reproduce detailed cloud patterns such as sugar, mainly due to its coarse resolution. However, it does, Civil Engineering | Environmental Engineering

HAZE , *MICROPHYSICS , *FOG - Abstract
Most of the effects caused by fog are negative for humans. Yet, numerical weather prediction (NWP) models still have problems to simulate fog properly, especially in operational forecasts. In the case of radiation fog, this is partially caused by the large sensitivity to many aspects, such as the synoptic and local conditions, the near-surface turbulence, the aerosol and droplet microphysics, or the surface characteristics, among others. This work focuses on an interesting 8-day period with several alternating radiation and cloud-base lowering (CBL) fog events observed at the Research Centre for the Lower Atmosphere (CIBA) in the Spanish Northern Plateau. On the one hand, radiation fog events are associated with strong surface cooling leading to high stability close to the surface and low values of turbulence, giving rise to shallow fog. The evolution of this type of fog is markedly sensitive to the dynamical conditions close to the surface (i.e., wind speed and turbulence). On the other hand, CBL fog presents deeper thickness associated with higher values of turbulence and less stability. Subsequently, we evaluated the fog-forecasting skill of two mesoscale models (WRF and HARMONIE) configured as similar as possible. Both models present more difficulties simulating radiation fog events than CBL ones. However, the duration and vertical extension of the CBL fog events is normally overestimated. This extended-fog avoids the surface radiative cooling needed to simulate radiation fog events formed the following nights. Therefore, these periods with alternating CBL and radiation fog are especially challenging for NWP models. • Radiation fog features are different from those of cloud-base lowering fog. • Periods with alternating CBL and radiation fog present additional difficulties for models. • Shallow radiation fog remains as a challenge for NWP models. • The fog forecasting skill of models should be done separately for each event. Hispano-American modernism, the period of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, brings about a major renewal of literary creation, which allows a self-confident and decisive input of this region's literatures into modernity. The article briefly examines the key moments of this renewal, based on the search for beauty and harmony and the desire for a perfect rhythm of the language to reflect the rhythm of the universe; it also points out the connection with the incoming avant-garde. This paper offers the first ever published discussion of the ethical treatise Harmonie: Versuch einer monistischen Ethik [Harmony: an attempt at a monistic ethics] by Heinrich Schmidt (1874–1935), one of the leading figures in the circle of Ernst Haeckel. Published near the end of Schmidt's life (1931), it constituted a kind of summation of decades of intense involvement in the "project" of German monism that found its epicentre in Jena, and in Haeckel's attempts at founding it on Darwinian and Goethian lines. After a brief description of Schmidt's life and works, we summarize the main lines of Haeckel's evolutionary thought and their expression in his sparse ethical writings. A detailed description of Harmonie follows, in which we seek to demonstrate Schmidt's close adherence to Haeckel's monist foundations, as well as indicate where he expanded his own thinking in directions beyond Haeckel's. Lastly, we suggest that Harmonie, perhaps contrary to Schmidt's wishes after 1933, nevertheless offers textual evidence of the deep incompatibility of Schmidt's understanding of ethics to the sociopolitical ideology of National Socialism. This is consistent with the historical record of how Haeckel's monism, together with those like Schmidt who worked tirelessly to promote it, was negatively regarded by the NSDAP.

In La Grande Période, published in 1790, 1796 and 1805, Jean Delormel defends the idea that the inclination of the Earth’s axis of rotation is slowly decreasing and that, consequently, humanity is advancing very slowly towards a new golden age. His theory presents three paradoxes: while time is both progressive and cyclical, progress is also both very slow and very fast as well as made up of happy and unhappy events and, consequently, the French Revolution can be one or the other, depending on the context of publication. Delormel defends the social usefulness of a theory of harmony that should give rise to hope and that can have concrete applications. Although it is based on astronomy and relies on elements of the biblical tradition, his science is a practical science that operates in two ways: by simplifying and by reconciling. The theorist of harmony is thus presented as the one who overcomes quarrels and provides the means to extinguish them. Writing for concord and progress, he can offer his services to the new institutions, which he does with the Committee of Public Instruction, then with the First Consul. If La Grande Période is the singular work of an author who played no major role in the history of science, it testifies to the permanence of the social demand to which Delormel tried to respond. The desire for unity that he expresses and to which he intends to contribute is one of the main political and literary key elements of the revolutionary period.

In his art criticism, Baudelaire sometimes used a pictorial characteristic that determines an awkward use of colour by the painter and that the language of art calls papillotage. From 1845 to 1862, the meaning of the term papillotage did not very much, but it is possible, if we consider the objects it defines negatively, to estimate its historical significance, and to understand its links with the notion of illusion.

There are well-known difficulties to run numerical weather prediction (NWP) and climate models at resolutions traditionally referred to as ‘grey-zone’ (~3–8 km) where deep convection is neither completely resolved by the model dynamics nor completely subgrid. In this study, we describe the performance of an operational NWP model, HARMONIE, in a climate setting (HCLIM), run at two different resolutions (6 and 15 km) for a 10-yr period (1998–2007). This model has a convection scheme particularly designed to operate in the ‘grey-zone’ regime, which increases the realism and accuracy of the time and spatial evolution of convective processes compared to more traditional parametrisations. HCLIM is evaluated against standard observational data sets over Europe as well as high-resolution, regional, observations. Not only is the regional climate very well represented but also higher order climate statistics and smaller scale spatial characteristics of precipitation are in good agreement with observations. The added value when making climate simulations at ~5 km resolution compared to more typical regional climate model resolutions is mainly seen for the very rare, high-intensity precipitation events. HCLIM at 6 km resolution reproduces the frequency and intensity of these events better than at 15 km resolution and is in closer agreement with the high-resolution observations.

- Abstract
2) "Idea" v Komenského emanačním schématu ("idea" jako základ světové analogie, paralelismu a panharmonie). 3) Vztah pojmů "idea" a "notio" (nauka o společných vrozených pojmech). Práce je založena na důkladné práci s pramennou literaturou, opírá se také o tematicky relevantní literaturu sekundární, zvláště o studie o Komenském od Jana Patočky., Comenius' work is a broad synthesis of philosophically heterogeneous influences. Among antique and christianly assimilated motifs dominates Christian Neoplatonism in Comenius' thought. "Idea" is one of the key concepts in both Comenius' ontology and gnoseology. In the work is analyzed the concept of "idea" in Comenius' pansophical and metaphysical writings. Attention will be focused on the following thematic areas: 1) "Idea" in the context of Comenius's metaphysics. 2) "Idea" in Comenius' emanation scheme ("idea" as the basis of world analogy, parallelism and panharmony). 3) The relationship between the terms "idea" and "notio" (the science of common innate terms). The work is based on thorough work with source literature, it is also relates on thematically relevant secondary literature, especially on the study of Comenius by Jan Patočka., Fakulta filozofická, Autorka práce " K pojmu idea v díle Jana Amose Komenského" představila komisi záměr a strukturu své práce. King's Singers: All of our musical backgrounds are quite different from each other, but they also share some basic things. Firstly, we all sang as children. For some of us, this was very serious, in church or cathedral choirs; for others this singing was in local community choirs or school choirs. But we all share the story of falling in love with singi...

ABSTRACT The 10 m-wind over flat terrain in models is often lower than observations indicate. Here we show that this negative bias is mainly caused by the larger roughness lengths that models use than the World Meteorological Organisation ( WMO)-advised roughness length of short grass (0.03 m). The concept of potential wind, which transforms the original wind to the theoretical wind under the assumption of a local roughness of 0.03 m, is well suited to distinguish this effect from other causes. It shows that the yearly averaged bias in Hirlam Aladin Research on Meso-scale Operational NWP (numerical weather prediction) in Euromed ( HARMONIE) is largely due to roughness effects. The year-to-year variations are caused by misrepresentations of the weather situations by HARMONIE. This can be concluded from the analysis of the geostrophic wind, which is insensitive for roughness effects. Although the yearly averaged potential wind speed is well represented, HARMONIE reveals a strong seasonal cycle in the bias, being too low in summer, and slightly too high in winter. This is mainly caused by a too strong seasonal cycle in the representation of the leaf area index. The HARMONIE data set points out to underestimate the average wind over The Netherlands up to 10% in the period before 1995. Even after correction for roughness effects, an underestimation of 6% remains. It is likely that the disappearance of the bias after 1995 is caused by the gradually improved quality of the ERA-Interim data set with time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Demonstrating the impact of bidirectional coupling on the performance of an ocean-met model.

- Abstract
The mass, momentum and energy fluxes between the atmosphere and ocean surface depend on the state of the ocean surface. The fluxes in turn can significantly alter the nature of the marine boundary layer and the state of the ocean surface. These interactions can be modelled deterministically using a multiphase modelling approach or using a semi-stochastic approach. While the multiphase approach can give better insights (e.g. wave generation), it is computationally too expensive and not suited for modelling ocean waves which are inherently random in nature. It is for this reason that in a forecasting context, semi-stochastic approach is still the workhorse. Furthermore, even in a semi-stochastic approach ocean and atmospheric models can be coupled in either unidirectional way (ocean affecting the atmosphere) or bidirectional way (both ocean and atmosphere affecting each other). Current work compares the performance of these two coupling approaches and validates them using significant wave heights and 10m wind magnitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

REMOTE sensing ,DATA analysis - Abstract
The Gaussian dispersion model AEROPOL is validated against the Cabauw (1977-1978) dataset, applying the parameters and rules from the Model Validation Kit. The purpose to revisit this experiment is preparation for fast response to buoyant accidental releases. In the AEROPOL model, the classical Pasquill-Gifford stability and a scheme based on Lagrangian time scales (the Gryning scheme) are used as alternatives. Validation is based on correlation, fractional bias, fractional sigma, NMSE and fraction in factor 2, applying these statistics to maximal arc-wise, near-centreline and cross-wind integrated concentrations. Both parameterisations are found to be fairly adequate. The Gryning scheme results in moderately underestimated concentrations, which are well correlated with the experimental ones. The Pasquill parameterisation, in contrast, represents the concentrations well on average, but with larger scatter. The average wind direction and speed between the lowest measurement level and release level are found to be good approximations to represent the position of the Gaussian plume. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This thesis explores different ways in which pianist perceive harmony in compositions of the Romantic era. I write about history of harmony and about the context of the Romantic era at the beginning of the thesis. Then I write about Chopin and about his work with a motion, a sound and harmony. The rest of the work devotes to the research. I conducted qualitative research. I interviewed four pianists, with each pianist we talked about three compositions of the Romantic era. I gave scores of the Chopin's Mazurka B minor, op. 30, no. 2 to all of them, the rest of the compositions were chosen by the pianists. They had to choose two compositions, which were created by R. Schumann, S. Rachmaninoff, or F. Liszt. I ask them questions, which realize me to find how they work with the tonality, and to find if they find some characters in keys. I wanted to find how much is important the relief for the hands for them and how much they tend to make a detailed harmonic analysis. I also tried to find if the analysis is rather intuitive or conducted process for them. I interviewed very successful piano teacher Viktoria Kraf and three famous Czech pianists Jaroslava Vernerová, Miroslav Sekera and Jan Jiraský, the professor of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno. The answers of the pianists can...

While noting the significant peculiarities of the construction Qui dit Noël dit cadeau, Kentaro Koga has launched a series of research on all the infrastructures of this construction, with the aim of revealing their internal organization and identifying their possible lexical and syntactic variations. This article – « Qui dit Noël dit cadeau : modèle, variation et idées conventionnelles » – by Kentaro Koga, established from his own collection of linguistic data, studies the uses of the construction qui dit X dit Y in the French nowadays. Nevertheless, it seems that his conclusions are more or less arbitrary, which il the reason why we will re-examine this construction from other hermeneutical angles.

- Abstract
This reflection stems from an exchange with palliative care workers who expressed their difficulties in synchronizing with their patients. On the one hand, time is focused on action, on the other, on waiting. How can we provide care when time is lacking and eludes us? We can first recognize in the difference and the gap the foundations of the caring relationship. The presence of these bodies, those of caregivers and those of patients, allows us to create a bond that, in the moment, resists the distinct temporalities., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Masson SAS.
