Among harmonic distortion indices presented in International Electrotechnical Commission (IET) standard 61000‐4‐7, only group total harmonic distortion (THDG) can be used for interharmonic pollution analysis. However, existence of interharmonic components around of fundamental frequency may deteriorate accuracy of this index. To solve this problem, two virtual groups according to IEC standard are defined in this study. Then, two new distortion indices are proposed by using virtual groups in equation of THDG index. The new distortion indices are named as: group and subgroup total harmonic distortion and improved THDG. On the basis of various simulation tests and usage of different waveform decomposition methods, it is shown that proposed indices can better show the amount of waveform distortion caused by interharmonics in respect to IEC indices. This study deals with measurement of harmonic distortion and Skewness of stator current in Clarke plane at crawling of induction motor. Three‐phase current signals have been transformed into Clarke plane. Dominancy of seventh harmonic is observed by assessing maxima and minima of stator current Concordia in Clarke plane. Specific reference signals having sinusoidal nature and different frequencies are defined and then areas covered by the real system data with the reference signal have been determined, wherefrom individual contributions of fundamental waveform and harmonic components are measured separately and total harmonic distortion factors are determined. Then wavelet decomposition of stator current is done in Clarke plane, wherefrom, signals are assessed with the help of Skewness of approximate coefficient in Clarke plane. Stator current of induction motor is analysed at single phasing by measuring phase angle, symmetrical components, Skewness, Kurtosis and harmonic distortion in Park plane. Diagnosis of single phasing of induction motor has been achieved by sequence components and stator current based pattern assessment. Distinct phase shift from 120° to 180° is observed between healthy phases. Patterns are formed using line currents and single phasing is assessed by using rule sets developed from features extracted from those patterns. Experimental result agrees with rule set and result obtained by assessment using sequence components. Then assessment is done by analysing wavelet decomposition based Skewness and Kurtosis of stator current in Park plane. At last, area based approach is used for assessment of single phasing and different distortion factors because of harmonics in Park plane are assessed. Accuracy increases with the increase of sampling rate of data acquisition system and use of Park plane has reduced computation effort by two‐thirds. Thus single phasing is detected by sequence components supported by pattern formation and feature extraction and then harmonics during single phasing are assessed by wavelet decomposition and area‐based approach in Park plane. Wavelet transform (WT) is one of the most useful digital signal processing tools for time-frequency analysis of power quality disturbances in power systems. Abstract: In this paper, noise propagation through a two-stage nonlinear algorithm for measurement of harmonic distortion in power systems according to IEC 61000-4-7 is analyzed. Noise generated in the instrument’s input circuitry is considered as an aggregated noise source without detailed characterization of its origin. The first stage of the measurement algorithm is the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of the input signal. Noise propagation through the DFT is analyzed by means of probability theory. The result of this analysis, the probability density function (pdf) of the DFT spectrum amplitudes, is used for characterization of the second stage of the measurement algorithm – the root-sum-square grouping of several spectrum components into a single harmonic distortion index. In this way, pdfs of the most common harmonic indices are derived and analyzed. The study presented reveals that noise generated in the input stage produces, besides the already known variance of the results, an offset in the harmonic distortion indices. Analysis of the resulting pdfs implies that an increase in the number of components in the grouping procedure increases the offset error, whereas the standard deviations are essentially independent of the number of components included in the group. The validity of the model derived has been tested with a prototype of a low-cost portable instrument for three-phase power quality measurements. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Power distribution systems often exhibit different harmonic behaviours at different locations. It is not usually possible to completely characterise the distortion at a particular site, however, due to insufficient data about the measured system and instrumentation inability to evaluate or register complete set of measurement quantities. In this paper existing power quality standards are analysed and new harmonic distortion indices are derived. A new index describing the total harmonic distortion in current measurements, TRD, is suggested in order to simplify and standardise harmonic measurements. Another index representing the increase of harmonic voltage distortion with TRD, equivalent harmonic impedance z eq , is proposed as an efficient way of characterising a particular site. The framework described here can be used to predict future harmonic behaviour at any previously measured point. Finally, extensive harmonic measurements of a real distribution system were performed to prove the usefulness of the proposed indices. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
