Chlorotetracycline (CTC) has been used in many cells as a probe for membranous calcium. In polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN), the changes in CTC fluorescence upon stimulation are considered to monitor an early event in the activation process. Using quantitative video-enhanced microscopy, we report that in resting cells about 80% of the CTC signal emanates from the perinuclear region of the cell, indicating that internal structures are labeled with CTC. Approximately 20% of the total CTC fluorescence is taken up in a compartment sensitive to mitochondrial inhibitors, which is not present in neutrophils depleted of nucleus and granules or cytoplasts. Upon stimulation PMN loaded with CTC exhibit a rapid, biphasic decrease in fluorescence that is dose dependent. The second phase of the response is not seen in neutrophil cytoplasts. These results suggest that internal stores of CTC are responsive upon stimulation and could account for the later decrease in CTC fluorescence, whereas the early phase of CTC changes represents the plasma membrane response.

To support higher power applications Ceres has developed an innovative 5kWe-class stack design which can be used in an array to achieve higher power outputs for both stationary power and commercial vehicle applications. The stack incorporates learning from multiple development cycles and tens of thousands of hours of testing the mature 1kWeSteelCell® stack design, with several significant design improvements. This stack design has been successfully incorporated into several different customer’s systems, with outstanding electrical efficiency and mechanical robustness demonstrated, the latter facilitating the use of an SOFC stack for transportation applications.

Paintings of the Great Mural Style in Baja California follow strict conventions in the depictions of humans and animals. These conventions have been described in Crosby's book Cave Paintings of Baja California. The figures are often placed in groups or overlapped. This paper describes patterns in figure placement at sites in Baja California in the vicinity of Mission Santa Gertrudis. Patterns include: pairs of large human figures (called monos in this rock art style) with arms crossing; rows of monos placed side by side with arms crossing; groups of smaller figures at the feet of the larger ones or grouped together by themselves; V-shaped groups of large monos. These patterns demonstrate that conventions governed figure placement as well as figure content in this region. It is hoped that study of the placement of figures can give insight into the meaning of the paintings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
