Summary: Lichens are exemplar symbioses based upon carbon exchange between photobionts and their mycobiont hosts. Historically considered a two‐way relationship, some lichen symbioses have been shown to contain multiple photobiont partners; however, the way in which these photobiont communities react to environmental change is poorly understood.Lichina pygmaea is a marine cyanolichen that inhabits rocky seashores where it is submerged in seawater during every tidal cycle. Recent work has indicated that L. pygmaea has a complex photobiont community including the cyanobionts Rivularia and Pleurocapsa. We performed rRNA‐based metabarcoding and mRNA metatranscriptomics of the L. pygmaea holobiont at high and low tide to investigate community response to immersion in seawater.Carbon exchange in L. pygmaea is a dynamic process, influenced by both tidal cycle and the biology of the individual symbiotic components. The mycobiont and two cyanobiont partners exhibit distinct transcriptional responses to seawater hydration.Sugar‐based compatible solutes produced by Rivularia and Pleurocapsa in response to seawater are a potential source of carbon to the mycobiont. We propose that extracellular processing of photobiont‐derived polysaccharides is a fundamental step in carbon acquisition by L. pygmaea and is analogous to uptake of plant‐derived carbon in ectomycorrhizal symbioses. The article provides information about "Tartan Album," a book that compiles the work of John and Robert Adamson. It is stated that the book contains 18 small calotypes taken by Adamson brothers at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland during the summer and fall of 1842. Accordingly, the calotype photography denotes various subjects such as landscapes of ruin and historic buildings, celebrity and non-celebrity portraits and still life pictures. The author denotes that the entire book is reproduced with the permission of its current owner. Images of the photographic work depicted in the above mentioned book are also presented.

The article focuses on the manuscript letter regarding the plan of photographer William Henry Fox Talbot for a photographic expedition to Kenilworth, England. It is stated that among the manuscripts in the Lock Abbey Collection, in Fox Talbot Museum, the letter of Talbot's wife, Constance, discusses Talbot's plan for a photographic expedition with his friend David Brewster. Pertinent to the dating question are Constance's comments about Brewster's visit to Lacock Abbey. It is further noted that the exact date of the letter would be academic, except for the fact that it has been used several times in photographic literature to support the notion that three to four years before Talbot made his photogenic drawing process public, he was already using it on photographic excursion.

Biodiversity genomics research requires reliable organismal identification, which can be difficult based on morphology alone. DNA-based identification using DNA barcoding can provide confirmation of species identity and resolve taxonomic issues but is rarely used in studies generating reference genomes. Here, we describe the development and implementation of DNA barcoding for the Darwin Tree of Life Project (DToL), which aims to sequence and assemble high quality reference genomes for all eukaryotic species in Britain and Ireland. We present a standardised framework for DNA barcode sequencing and data interpretation that is then adapted for diverse organismal groups. DNA barcoding data from over 12,000 DToL specimens has identified up to 20% of samples requiring additional verification, with 2% of seed plants and 3.5% of animal specimens subsequently having their names changed.
