Search

The magnetic field dependence of photoabsorption provides direct insights into the band structure of semiconductors. It is perhaps surprising that there is a large discrepancy between electron, hole, and reduced mass reported in the recent literature. Motivated by this puzzle we reconsider excitonic magneto-absorption and find that the commonly employed perturbative approach, namely for computing the diamagnetic shift, is inadequate to account for the parameter ranges considered in existing data. In particular, we develop the theory for strong magnetic field and, upon analysis of the data, arrive at the set of exciton parameters different to what has been estimated perturbatively in the literature. Only s-wave excitons are visible in photoluminescence as the spectral weight of p-wave states is too small, this limits the amount of information that can be extracted about the underlying band structure. To overcome this, we propose to study p-wave states by mixing them with s-wave states by external in-plane electric field and show that a moderate DC electric field would provide sufficient mixing to brighten p-wave states. We calculate energies of the p-wave states including the effects of valley-orbital splitting and the orbital Zeeman shift, and show that this provides direct information on the electron-hole mass asymmetry., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Superconducting transmon qubits with strong anharmonicity and insensitivity to offset charge are highly desirable for low-error implementation. In this work we propose a c-axis junction, comprising triplet superconductors, and set at a relative twist angle. Invoking spin-orbit coupling and spin polarization, which are known to occur in the material platform of choice, we examine the resulting transmon Hamiltonian. This junction allows for direct control of the single and double Cooper pair tunneling strength, and most remarkably, an anomalous magnetic flux -- i.e. a phase offset equivalent to magnetic flux, yet in zero magnetic field. Having control over these three parameters -- single and double pair tunneling and anomalous flux -- allows for optimal design of the transmon qubit. Interestingly, in this architecture, the anomalous flux is determined by the twist angle of the junction, thereby offering a novel zero-field functionality. Our key results rely on symmetry arguments, for concreteness we demonstrate the implementation of our concept using a model of moir\'e graphene-based c-axis junctions.

We investigate the superconducting properties of inversion-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene by considering different parent states, including spin-singlet, triplet, and SO(4) degenerate states, with or without nodal points. By placing transition metal dichalcogenide layers above and below twisted trilayer graphene, spin-orbit coupling is induced in TTLG and, due to inversion symmetry, the spin-orbit coupling does not spin-split the bands. The application of a displacement field ($D_0$) breaks the inversion symmetry and creates spin-splitting. We analyze the evolution of the superconducting order parameters in response to the combined spin-orbit coupling and $D_0$-induced spin-splitting. Utilizing symmetry analysis combined with both a direct numerical evaluation and a complementary analytical study of the gap equation, we provide a comprehensive understanding of the influence of spin-orbit coupling and $D_0$ on superconductivity. These results contribute to a better understanding of the superconducting order in twisted trilayer graphene., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) exhibits a captivating phase diagram as a function of doping, featuring superconductivity and a variety of insulating and magnetic states. The bands host Dirac fermions with a reduced Fermi velocity; experiments have shown that the Dirac dispersion reappears near integer fillings of the moir\'e unit cell -- referred to as the $\textit{Dirac revival}$ phenomenon. The reduced velocity of these Dirac states leads us to propose a scenario in which the Dirac fermions possess an approximately quadratic dispersion. The quadratic momentum dependence and particle-hole degeneracy at the Dirac point results in a logarithmic enhancement of interaction effects, which does not appear for a linear dispersion. The resulting non-trivial renormalisation group (RG) flow naturally produces the qualitative phase diagram as a function of doping -- with nematic and insulating states near integer fillings, which give way to superconducting states past a critical relative doping. The RG method further produces different results to strong-coupling Hartree-Fock treatments: producing T-IVC insulating states for repulsive interactions, explaining the results of very recent STM experiments, alongside nodal $A_2$ superconductivity near half-filling, whose properties explain puzzles in tunnelling studies of the superconducting state. The model explains a diverse range of additional experimental observations, unifying many aspects of the phase diagram of TBG.

We consider suspened bilayer graphene under applied perpendicular electric bias field that is known to generate a single particle gap $2\Delta$ and a related electric polarization ${\cal P}$. We argue that the bias also drives a quantum phase transition from band insulator to superfluid exciton condensate. The transition occurs when the exciton binding energy exceeds the band gap $2\Delta$. We predict the critical bias (converted to band gap), $\Delta_c\approx 60$ meV, below which the excitons condense. The critical temperature, $T_c(\Delta)$, is maximum at $\Delta \approx 25$ meV, $T_c^\text{max}\approx 115$ K, decreasing significantly at smaller $\Delta$ due to thermal screening. Entering the condensate phase, the superfluid transition is accompanied by a cusp in the electric polarization ${\cal P}(\Delta)$ at $\Delta\to\Delta_c$, which provides a striking testable signature. Additionally, we find that the condensate prefers to form a pair density wave.

We study theoretically a moir\'e superlattice geometry consisting of mirror-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene surrounded by identical transition metal dichalcogenide layers. We show that this setup allows to switch on/off and control the spin-orbit splitting of the Fermi surfaces via application of a perpendicular displacement field $D_0$, and explore two manifestations of this control: first, we compute the evolution of superconducting pairing with $D_0$; this features a complex admixture of singlet and triplet pairing and, depending on the pairing state in the parent trilayer system, phase transitions between competing superconducting phases. Second, we reveal that, with application of $D_0$, the spin-orbit-induced spin textures exhibit vortices which lead to "M\"obius fermi surfaces'' in the interior of the Brillouin zone: diabatic electron trajectories, which are predicted to dominate quantum oscillation experiments, require encircling the $\Gamma$ point twice, making their M\"obius nature directly observable. We further show that the superconducting order parameter inherits the unconventional, M\"obius spin textures. Our findings suggest that this system provides a promising experimental avenue for studying systematically the impact of spin-orbit coupling on the multitude of topological and correlated phases in near-magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

Excitonic bound states are characterised by a binding energy $\epsilon_b$ and a single-particle band gap $\Delta_b$. This work provides a theoretical description for both strong ($\epsilon_b\sim\Delta_b$) and weak ($\epsilon_b\ll\Delta_b$) excitonic bound states, with particular application to biased bilayer graphene. Standard description of excitons is based on a wave function that is determined by a Schr\"odinger-like equation with screened attractive potential. The wave function approach is valid only in the weak binding regime $\epsilon_b\ll\Delta_b$. The screening depends on frequency (dynamical screening) and this implies retardation. In the case of strong binding, $\epsilon_b\sim\Delta_b$, a wave function description is not possible due to the retardation. Instead we appeal to the Bethe-Salpeter equation, written in terms of the electron-hole Green's function, to solve the problem. So far only the weak binding regime has been achieved experimentally. Our analysis demonstrates that the strong binding regime is also possible and we specify conditions in which it can be achieved for the prototypical example of biased bilayer graphene. The conditions concern the bias, the configuration of gates, and the substrate material. To verify the accuracy of our analysis we compare with available data for the weak binding regime. We anticipate applying the developed dynamical screening Bethe-Salpeter techniques to various 2D materials with strong binding., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Recent experiments on kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K,Rb,Cs) [M. Kang et al., Nat. Phys. 18, 301-308 (2022)] identify twofold van Hove singularities (TvHS) with opposite concavity near the Fermi energy, generating two approximately hexagonal Fermi surfaces -- one electron-like and the other hole-like. Here we propose that a TvHS generates a novel time-reversal symmetry breaking excitonic order -- arising due to bound pairs of electrons and holes located at opposite concavity van Hove singularities. We introduce a minimal model for the TvHS and investigate interaction induced many-body instabilities via the perturbative renormalisation group technique and a free energy analysis. Specialising to parameters appropriate for the kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$, we construct a phase diagram comprising chiral excitons, charge density wave and a region of coexistence. We propose this as an explanation of a diverse range of experimental observations in AV$_3$Sb$_5$. Notably, the chiral excitonic state gives rise to a quantum anomalous Hall conductance, providing an appealing interpretation of the observed anomalous Hall effect in kagome metals. Possible alternative realisations of the TvHS mechanism in bilayer materials are also discussed. We suggest that TvHS open up interesting possibilities for correlated phases, enriching the set of competing ground states to include excitonic order.

In a recent experiment [Lin et al., arXiv:2112.07841], the superconducting phase hosted by a heterostructure of mirror-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene and WSe$_2$ was shown to exhibit significantly different critical currents in opposite directions in the absence of external magnetic fields. We here develop a microscopic theory and analyze necessary conditions for this zero-field superconducting diode effect. Taking into account the spin-orbit coupling induced in trilayer graphene via the proximity effect, we classify the pairing instabilities and normal-state orders and derive which combinations are consistent with the observed diode effect, in particular, its field trainability. We perform explicit calculations of the diode effect in several different models, including the full continuum model for the system, and illuminate the relation between the diode effect and finite-momentum pairing. Our theory also provides a natural explanation of the observed sign change of the current asymmetry with doping, which can be related to an approximate chiral symmetry of the system, and of the enhanced transverse resistance above the superconducting transition. Our findings not only elucidate the rich physics of trilayer graphene on WSe$_2$, but also establish a means to distinguish between various candidate interaction-induced orders in spin-orbit-coupled graphene moir\'e systems, and could therefore serve as a guide for future experiments as well., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

The critical current of a superconductor can be different for opposite directions of current flow when both time-reversal and inversion symmetry are broken. %When time-reversal and inversion symmetry are simultaneously broken, the critical current of a 2D superconductor is expected to depend on the directions of current flow. Such nonreciprocal behavior in superconducting transport, which creates a superconducting diode, has recently been demonstrated experimentally by breaking these symmetries with an applied magnetic field \cite{Ando2020diodes} or by construction of a magnetic tunnel junction \cite{Diez2021magnetic}. Here we report an intrinsic superconducting diode effect which is present at zero external magnetic field in mirror symmetric twisted trilayer graphene (tTLG). Such nonreciprocal behavior, with sign that can be reversed through training with an out-of-plane magnetic field, provides direct evidence of the microscopic coexistence between superconductivity and time-reversal symmetry breaking. In addition to the magnetic-field trainability, we show that the zero-field diode effect can be controlled by varying carrier density or twist angle. In accordance with these experimental controls, a natural interpretation for the origin of the intrinsic diode effect is an imbalance in valley occupation of the underlying Fermi surface, which likely leads to finite-momentum Cooper pairing and nematicity in the superconducting phase.

When layers of graphene are rotationally misaligned by the magic angle, the moir\'e superlattice features extremely flat bands. Due to the enhanced density of states, the Coulomb interaction induces a variety of instabilities. The most prominent occur at integer filling and are therefore commonly attributed to spontaneous polarization of the moir\'e unit cell's `flavor' degrees of freedom -- spin, valley, and the flat-band degeneracy. As the dominant member of the hierarchy, these correlated states are thought to crucially determine further instabilities at lower energy scales, such as superconductivity and weaker incompressible states at fractional filling. In this work, we examine the behavior of twisted trilayer graphene in a window of twist angle around $1.3^{\circ}$, well below the expected magic angle of $1.55^{\circ}$. In this small twist angle regime, we find surprisingly narrow bands, which are populated with both an abundance of correlation-driven states at fractional filling as well as robust superconductivity. The absence of linear-in-$T$ resistivity without significant reduction of the superconducting transition temperature, provides insights into the origin of both phenomena. Most remarkably, the hierarchy between integer and fractional filling is absent, indicating that flavor polarization does not play a governing role. The prominence of fractional filling in the small twist angle regime also points towards a longer-range effective Coulomb interaction. Combined, our results shed new light on outstanding questions in the field, while establishing the small twist angle regime as a new paradigm for exploring novel flavors of moir\'e physics.

We explore higher order topological superconductivity in an artificial Dirac material with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, which is a doped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator in the normal state. A mechanism for superconductivity due to repulsive interactions -- $\mathit{pseudospin}$ $\mathit{pairing}$ -- has recently been shown to naturally result in higher-order topology in Dirac systems past a minimum chemical potential \cite{Li2021}. Here we apply this theory through microscopic modeling of a superlattice potential imposed on an inversion symmetric hole-doped semiconductor heterostructure, known as hole-based semiconductor artificial graphene, and extend previous work to include the effects of spin-orbit coupling. We find that spin-orbit coupling enhances interaction effects, providing an experimental handle to increase the efficiency of the superconducting mechanism. We show that the phase diagram of these systems, as a function of chemical potential and interaction strength, contains three superconducting states -- a first-order topological $p+ip$ state, a second-order topological spatially modulated $p+i\tau p$ state, and a second-order topological extended $s$-wave state, $s_\tau$. We calculate the symmetry-based indicators for the $p+i\tau p$ and $s_\tau$ states, which prove these states possess second-order topology. Exact diagonalisation results are presented which illustrate the interplay between the boundary physics and spin orbit interaction. We argue that this class of systems offer an experimental platform to engineer and explore first and higher-order topological superconducting states.

We demonstrate the existence of novel interaction effects in hole-doped semiconductor quantum wells which are connected to dramatic changes in the Fermi surface geometry occurring upon variation of the doping. We present band structure calculations showing that quantum wells formed in $p$-type cubic semiconductors develop nested Fermi surfaces at a critical hole density set by the width $d$ of the quantum well $k_F\sim \pi/d$. Nesting gives rise to competing superconducting and charge or spin density wave order, which we analyze using the perturbative renormalization group method. The correlated phases may be created or destroyed by tuning the hole density towards or away from the critical density. Our results establish $p$-type semiconductor quantum wells as a platform for novel correlated phases, which may be precisely controlled using electrostatic gating and external magnetic fields.

We discuss a pairing mechanism in interacting two-dimensional multipartite lattices that intrinsically leads to a second order topological superconducting state with a spatially modulated gap. When the chemical potential is close to Dirac points, oppositely moving electrons on the Fermi surface undergo an interference phenomenon in which the Berry phase converts a repulsive electron-electron interaction into an effective attraction. The topology of the superconducting phase manifests as gapped edge modes in the quasiparticle spectrum and Majorana Kramers pairs at the corners. We present symmetry arguments which constrain the possible form of the electron-electron interactions in these systems and classify the possible superconducting phases which result. Exact diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian confirms the existence of gapped edge states and Majorana corner states, which strongly depend on the spatial structure of the gap. Possible applications to vanadium-based superconducting kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_3$ (A=K,Rb,Cs) are discussed.

We consider 2+1 dimensional conformal gauge theories coupled to additional degrees of freedom which induce a spatially local but long-range in time $1/(\tau-\tau')^2$ interaction between gauge-neutral local operators. Such theories have been argued to describe the hole-doped cuprates near optimal doping. We focus on a SU(2) gauge theory with $N_h$ flavors of adjoint Higgs fields undergoing a quantum transition between Higgs and confining phases: the $1/(\tau-\tau')^2$ interaction arises from a spectator large Fermi surface of electrons. The large $N_h$ expansion leads to an effective action containing fields which are bilocal in time but local in space. We find a strongly-coupled fixed point at order $1/N_h$, with dynamic critical exponent $z > 1$. We show that the entropy preserves hyperscaling, but nevertheless leads to a linear in temperature specific heat with a co-efficient which has a finite enhancement near the quantum critical point., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures

A recent work (arXiv:1811.04930) proposed a SU(2) gauge theory for optimal doping criticality in the cuprate superconductors. The theory contains $N_h$ Higgs fields transforming under the adjoint representation of SU(2), with $N_h=1$ for the electron-doped cuprates, and $N_h=4$ for the hole-doped cuprates. We investigate the strong-coupling dynamics of this gauge theory, while ignoring the coupling to fermionic excitations. We integrate out the SU(2) gauge field in a strong-coupling expansion, and obtain a lattice action for the Higgs fields alone. We study such a lattice action, with O($N_h$) global symmetry, in an analytic large $N_h$ expansion and by Monte Carlo simulations for $N_h=4$ and find consistent results. We find a confining phase with O($N_h$) symmetry preserved (this describes the Fermi liquid phase in the cuprates), and Higgs phases (describing the pseudogap phase of the cuprates) with different patterns of the broken global O($N_h$) symmetry. One of the Higgs phases is topologically trivial, implying the absence of any excitations with residual gauge charges. The other Higgs phase has $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order, with `vison' excitations carrying a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge charge. We find consistent regimes of stability for the topological Higgs phase in both our numerical and analytical analyses., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

Artificial lattices have served as a platform to study the physics of unconventional superconductivity. We study semiconductor artificial graphene -- a honeycomb superlattice imposed on a semiconductor heterostructure -- which hosts the Dirac physics of graphene but with a tunable periodic potential strength and lattice spacing, allowing control of the strength of the electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate a new mechanism for superconductivity due to repulsive interactions which requires a strong lattice potential and a minimum doping away from the Dirac points. The mechanism relies on the Berry phase of the emergent Dirac fermions, which causes oppositely moving electron pairs near the Dirac points to interfere destructively, reducing the Coulomb repulsion and thereby giving rise to an effective attraction. The attractive component of the interaction is enhanced by a novel antiscreening effect which, in turn, increases with doping; as a result there is a minimum doping beyond which superconducting order generically ensues. The dominant superconducting state exhibits a spatially modulated gap with chiral $p$-wave symmetry. Microscopic calculations suggest that the possible critical temperatures are large relative to the low carrier densities, for a range of experimentally realistic parameters.

The transition between the N\'{e}el antiferromagnet and the valence-bond solid state in two dimensions has become a paradigmatic example of deconfined quantum criticality, a non-Landau transition characterized by fractionalized excitations (spinons). We consider an extension of this scenario whereby the deconfined spinons are subject to a magnetic field. The primary purpose is to identify the exotic scenario of a Bose-Einstein condensate of spinons. We employ quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the \mbox{$J$-$Q$} model with a magnetic field and perform a quantum field theoretic analysis of the magnetic field and temperature dependence of thermodynamic quantities. The combined analysis provides compelling evidence for the Bose-Einstein condensation of spinons and also demonstrates an extended temperature regime in which the system is best described as a gas of spinons interacting with an emergent gauge field., Comment: Published in Phys. We describe the phase diagram of a 2+1 dimensional SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating incommensurate spin density waves for the hole-doped cuprates. Our primary assumption is that all low energy fermionic excitations are gauge neutral and electron-like, while the spin density wave order is fractionalized into Higgs fields transforming as adjoints of the gauge SU(2). The confining phase of the gauge theory is a conventional Fermi liquid with a large Fermi surface (and its associated $d$-wave superconductor). There is a quantum phase transition to a Higgs phase describing the `pseudogap' at lower doping. Depending upon the quartic terms in the Higgs potential, the Higgs phase exhibits one or more of charge density wave, Ising-nematic, time-reversal odd scalar spin chirality, and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological orders. It is notable that the emergent broken symmetries in our theory of fluctuating spin density waves co-incide with those observed in diverse experiments. For the electron-doped cuprates, the spin density wave fluctuations are at wavevector $(\pi,\pi)$, and then the corresponding SU(2) gauge theory only has a crossover between the confining and Higgs regimes, with an exponentially large confinement scale deep in the Higgs regime. On the Higgs side, for both the electron- and hole-doped cases, and at scales shorter than the confinement scale (which can be infinite when $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order is present), the electron spectral function has a `fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*)' form with small Fermi surfaces. We also describe the deconfined quantum criticality of the Higgs transition in the limit of a large number of Higgs flavors, and perturbatively discuss its coupling to fermionic excitations., Comment: 58 pages, 16 figures

We present a full-spectrum dependently typed core language which includes both nontermination and computational irrelevance (a.k.a. erasure), a combination which has not been studied before. The two features interact: to protect type safety we must be careful to only erase terminating expressions.
