6. Wall Flames and Implications for Upward Flame Spread.

Abstract

New concepts are addressed for predicting the flame spread on materials from laboratory measurements. It focuses on heat transfer which precipitates and precedes upward flame spread on a vertical surface. Six materials have been featured in this study as well as in past related studies. Their flame spread properties are presented. In this particular study heat transfer and flame height results are presented for wall samples burned at varying levels of external irradiance. Also complementary results are presented for methane line burner wall fires. An approximate theoretical analysis is included to serve as a guide to identifying the important variables and their relationship for correlation purposes. Experimental results yield flame height proportional to energy release rate to the 2/3 power, and wall heat flux distributions are roughly correlated in terms of distance divided by flame height. These correlations appear to at least hold for the scale of these experiments: flame heights of 0.3 to 1.47thinsp;m. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

7. Combustion efficiency, radiation, co and soot yield from a variety of gaseous, liquid, and solid fueled buoyant diffusion flames

Abstract

The following compilation of data describes combustion conditions for the free burning of propane, heptane, 3 crude oils, wood and polyurethane cribs in fuel package sizes less than a meter, having heat release rates up to 1/2 MW. Measurements include heat release rate from O2depletion calorimetry, mass loss rate, incident radiative flux to nearby targets, flame and liquid interface temperatures and overall major gaseous species yield including soot. The information contained herein provides a data base for buoyant diffusion flame modelling regarding radiation and elementary chemical characterization. There appears to be a one-to-one correspondence between a fuels radiative behavior and its soot and CO yield. Urethanes and crude oil have significantly higher values for all these parameters as compared to propane, heptane and wood. No correlation was found between these measurements and time-averaged thermocouple readings of temperature.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a fire-testing method that relates material ignitability and flame spread in the creeping mode. The analytical approach involves parameters and solutions arising from transient heat condition to a semi-infinite solid. Experimental data are generated on an apparatus employing a radiant panel to provide a varying heat flux to test specimens. Flame-spread rates and ignition events are measured against incident radiation and exposure time. The flame-spread data for given materials are correlated for varying exposure conditions by plotting the inverse square root of the flame-spread velocity against a product of the heat flux and a time function. The test and analysis results are shown for six diverse materials representative of aircraft (interior panels, carpeting, and seat cushions) and buildings (plywood, polymethyl methacrylate, and rigid foam).
