This study examined the file naming practices in 39 institutional repositories. There is evidence that calf-path exists in file naming among the curators of institutional repositories in India. The study showed that no standard or logic seems to have been followed by repositories in the naming of the files, except by the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) and the CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR). The study also examined the composition of the filenames, which shows that the author names (11.2%), titles (11.9%), journal title with volume and issue numbers (21.1%) form the basis for the formation of filenames. The study explores the challenges faced by academic libraries in meeting Google generation digital demands. It explores how library research services have changed due to these difficulties. It examines how the needs of the current generation of consumers affect library research services. This article emphasizes the various strategies for adapting research services; including incorporating digital tools and platforms, improving information literacy initiatives, and providing personal assistance are some of the techniques suggested in this study to transform research services. The paper provides a quantitative and qualitative description of "Semantic Web and Libraries" research based on global publications output (1193 publications) in the field as indexed in the Scopus database covering the 22 years 1998-2019. The research on "Semantic Web and Libraries" registered 25.853 growth per annum and averaged 5.75 citations per paper in 22 years, and bulk of global output (81.893) and more than 1003 citations global share in the field emanates from just the top 10 countries. The paper further provides an insight into the qualitative performance of research on "Semantic Web and Libraries" in terms of relative citation index, citations per paper, highly cited papers, top 30 global organizations, and 25 authors in the field, most favored subjects in the field. This study discusses about importance of MARC21 control field and its effective implementation in university libraries OPACs in Karnataka. The catalogue records available through library web OPACs of universities under study formed the data source for this study. The university library web OPACs which we examined in this study have used Koha ILMS. One thousand and eighty-eight (1088) records were randomly selected from the nine university library web OPACs for the study. The study examined the proper implementation of 008 control field of MARC21, which is an important data element in information retrieval. The study found that average length of a cataloguing record was 1572.78 characters. The study as also revealed that libraries web OPACs under study have given scant attention for control fields, 001 and 003 were the two tag numbers that have been used extensively. Overall the university libraries have neglected control fields data element in their OPACs. This adversely affect the data retrieval from the user point of view. Information retrieval is the challenge of the Web 2.0 world. The experiment of knowledge organisation in the context of abundant information available from various sources proves a major hurdle in obtaining information retrieval with greater precision and recall. The fast-changing landscape of information organisation through social networking sites at a personal level creates a world of opportunities for data scientists and also library professionals to assimilate the social data with expert created data. Thus, folksonomies or social tags play a vital role in information organisation and retrieval. The comparison of these user-created tags with expert-created index terms, author keywords and title words, will throw light on the differentiation between these sets of data. Such comparative studies show revelation of a new set of terms to enhance subject access and reflect the extent of similarity between user-generated tags and other set of terms. The CiteULike tags extracted from 5,150 scholarly journal articles in marine science were compared with corresponding Aquatic Science and Fisheries Abstracts descriptors, author keywords, and title terms. The Jaccard similarity coefficient method was employed to compare the social tags with the above mentioned wordsets, and results proved the presence of user-generated keywords in Aquatic Science and Fisheries Abstracts descriptors, author keywords, and title words. Of late, social tagging has become popular trend in information organisation. In context of digital resources the tags assigned by users also play vital role in information retrieval. For information discovery the 'terms' used to retrieve the results also depend upon the 'relevancy' or 'weightage' of the keywords. This study investigates 'relevancy ranking' of terms used in the full text of the resource. The common words present in both full text of the article and social tags were considered for the study by employing TF-IDF statistical technique and Jaccard similarity test. The results show that it is possible to assign 'weight' to keywords for better results and also determine the significant tags assigned by the user. The Jaccard similarity coefficient test adopted to understand the word similarity between full text words of an article and marine social tags. This study examined the mechanical engineering research output from India, Japan, and South Korea on different parameters including growth, collaboration indices, and activity index. The purpose of the study is to understand the overall development of mechanical engineering through analytical approaches applied on the scholarly outcome of the countries considered for the study. The study focuses on analysing the articles published by India, Japan, and South Korea, and is restricted to articles indexed in the Science Citation Index - Web of Science for the period 2000 to 2014. The ratios of number of paper to citations for India, Japan, and Korea are 20,836: 1,97,679; 24,494: 2,04,393; and 30,578: 2,66,902 respectively for the period 2000-2014. The findings show that there is a decline in Japanese publications in mechanical engineering, whereas other two countries have recorded an increasing trend. While India has tripled its publications in a span of 15 years, South Korea, on the other hand, has doubled its publications in the same span of time. There has been an increasing trend towards collaboration in almost all fields of science and technology. However, the extent of collaboration and their rate of growth varied for one subject to another, one branch to another branch of the same subject, and from one country to another country. UGC-NET is an eligibility examination for those who are aspiring for the academic jobs in the universities and colleges in India. There are multiple sources, mainly printed publications, available for preparation of UGC-NET exams. The present study examines the suitability of Wikipedia as a source for preparation. The 396 topics culled from the UGC-NET syllabus in LIS was compared for their coverage in Wikipedia. It was found that 55.55% of the topics are available on Wikipedia. The answers to the previous years' questions were also searched. The study found that 35.48% of answers could be traced in Wikipedia. The Wikipedia was also examined from other parameters such as up-to-datedness, comprehensiveness, illustrations, and references and external links. The analyses show that Wikipedia could be a source for preparation for UGC-NET. The study has an implication for those who are seeking the eligibility for the jobs through UGC-NET. Social tags are user generated metadata and play vital role in Information Retrieval (IR) of web resources. This study is an attempt to determine the similarities between social tags extracted from LibraryThing and Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) for the titles chosen for study by adopting Cosine similarity method. The result shows that social tags and controlled vocabularies are not quite similar due to the free nature of social tags mostly assigned by users whereas controlled vocabularies are attributed by subject experts. In the context of information retrieval and text mining, the Cosine similarity is most commonly adopted method to evaluate the similarity of vectors as it provides an important measurement in terms of degree to know how similar two documents are likely to be in relation to their subject matter. Keyboards are the dominant Input Method Editors (IMEs) used for data input into computers. With the rise of mobile devices with touchscreen technologies, soft keyboards, also called 'on screen' or virtual keyboards, have become popular. The keyboard layout decides the data entry rate, user friendliness, and accuracy of data input. This study assesses ten soft keyboards in the Kannada language with respect to their utility for interaction with OPAC. EazyType Kannada and Google Keyboard were found to be better than others in terms of number of keystrokes required to input data. Anova and Standard deviation techniques were used to analyse the data. This study has an implication for users of OPAC in deciding the keyboard to be used on their mobile devices. Accuracy in cataloguing records is of paramount importance in catalogues. It is not difficult to imagine that errors in the metadata hamper the retrieval of bibliographic records. The present study attempts to investigate the error rate found in the metadata records of the Mysore University Library (MUL). The MUL is one of the oldest university libraries in the country, India. The study selected and analysed the accuracy of 624 metadata records of the Mysore University Library along with 491 records of Library of Congress (LoC). The assessment of the selected records discerned two main types of errors notably: Major and minor errors. These findings illustrate and prove that the percentage of error rate in MUL is higher than that of LoC. The internet in its Web 2.0 version has given an opportunity among users to be participative and the chance to enhance the existing system, which makes it dynamic and collaborative. The activity of social tagging among researchers to organize the digital resources is an interesting study among information professionals. The one way of organizing the resources for future retrieval through these user-generated terms makes an interesting analysis by comparing them with professionally created controlled vocabularies. Here in this study, an attempt has been made to compare Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) terms with LibraryThing social tags. In this comparative analysis, the results show that social tags can be used to enhance the metadata for information retrieval. This paper analyzes the impact of research contributions of South Indian LIS teachers using citation analysis method. The research output of South Indian LIS teachers published in various national and international journals, conference proceedings, books since 1950s have been collected as available in Google Scholar. It is a known fact that Google Scholar is yet to become a comprehensive database of scholarly literature. So the data sample collected for the study would have some limitations with respect to the comprehensiveness of the data. However, authors believe that the sample available from Google Scholar is sufficient for conducting citation analysis studies. Research contributions of South Indian LIS teachers have been analysed and results are reported with appropriate inferences. 1909 research papers published by the South Indian LIS teachers form the basic data for the study. The number of research papers being published is increasing sharply in recent years. About half of the data collected (48.40%) for the study is in the form of articles published in journals. While DRTC and Karnatak University occupy top two positions in number of articles published, University of Mysore is a close competitor for the second position. Articles from SRLES (28.45%) and Information Studies (9.63%) are visible in Google Scholar more than other journals. 'Organization of Information' and 'Bibliometrics' are the most favoured area of research for South Indian LIS teachers. The study also reports the most cited articles of South Indian LIS teachers. This paper is an attempt to examine the accuracy of references in five psychology theses submitted to the University of Mysore. Nine hundred and twenty three references were verified for their accuracy. Seventy seven percent of the references had citation errors. The errors were classified as major and minor errors. The major errors included incorrect journal names, articles titles, author and citations such as wrong volumes, issues, years and page numbers. Minor errors included: punctuations, incomplete article titles, and incomplete author names. The study found that 39.54 percent of the references contained major errors. Misspelling author(s) name (21.77%), misspelling of titles (37.93%), mistakes in volume (5.76%) and issue numbers (1.15%), mistakes in year (37.66%) and page numbers (62.33%) were kinds of major errors found in the study. Lack of awareness about referencing techniques and lack of diligence in compilation of bibliography are the reasons for such errors. This paper presents the findings of a citation analysis study, the impact of S.R.Ranganathan's (SRR's) seminal works, namely, Five laws of library science Prolegomena to library classification, and Colon classification. More specifically the objective was to quantify the impact of SRR's works through citation analysis, and to study the citation pattern to SRR's works. This article is a study of Indian authors' contribution in foreign journals in library and information science during 1970-2005. The data were collected from 18 foreign journals. It is found from the study that 303 articles were published in various foreign journals in the field of library and information science. Scientometrics found to be the preferred foreign journal for Indian authors. Almost 44% of the articles published by them were reported in Scientometrics. While going through the Indian contribution in 18 international journals during the span of 36 years, it was found that only three authors have contributed more than 20 articles. This situation calls more attention from Indian authors to increase their level of productivity in foreign periodicals. The present study examines the issues related to the role of the library in promoting reading habits of professional and non professional students. The issues studied are the students' dependency on libraries, items that they read, and other factors that inspire them to develop their reading habits. A total of 1757 professional and non-professionals students from 52 colleges served as the sample for the present study. The data was colIected by questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and Chi square were applied to find out the difference between course type and gender on various issues. Results show that overall non-professional students were more dependent on libraries and were more positive about librarians and libraries than professional students. Suggestions to improve reading habits are also discussed. Factors like motivation through library orientation: library services relating to current events, journal articles, newspaper clippings library hour, book display and personal dialogue by library staff and other factors that improve reading habits are discussed. Studies thirty websites of top science universities around the world for their design features with special reference to usability. The guidelines suggested by National Cancer Institute have been applied to measure the usability features of the selected web sites. The parameters like optimizing the user experience; link back to home; colour link behaviour; navigability; and multimedia features have been studied for the websites. The results showed that only 53.33% of library web sites provides, frequently asked questions (FAQs). The time out option has been neglected by all the web sites except one. It is noticed that only 39.99% of the web sites have provision for explicit home link as well as through logos. Persistent navigation feature is observed only on 50% of the web sites. Only 8% of the web sites use the de facto link color coding. Library web sites are yet to exploit the advantages of multimedia (interactivity features). Examines the comparative retrieval effectiveness of the two packages, viz., CDS/ISIS and LibSys. A set of eight well defined parameters have been employed to compare the two packages. The result shows that neither of the two packages provide support for all the features that may be expected of ideal retrieval software. There appears to be some significant difference between CDS/ISIS and LibSys in terms of their ability to provide desirable features.
