Abstract

Recent satellite data have revealed a surprising correlation between galactic cosmic ray (GCR) intensity and the fraction of the Earth covered by clouds. If this correlation were to be established by a causal mechanism, it could provide a crucial step in understanding the long-sought mechanism connecting solar and climate variability. The Earth's climate seems to be remarkably sensitive to solar activity, but variations of the Sun's electromagnetic radiation appear to be too small to account for the observed climate variability. However, since the GCR intensity is strongly modulated by the solar wind, a GCR-cloud link may provide a sufficient amplifying mechanism. Moreover if this connection were to be confirmed, it could have profound consequences for our understanding of the solar contributions to the current global warming. The CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets) project proposes to test experimentally the existence a link between cosmic rays and cloud formation, and to understand the microphysical mechanism. CLOUD plans to perform detailed laboratory measurements in a particle beam at CERN, where all the parameters can be precisely controlled and measured. The beam will pass through an expansion cloud chamber and a reactor chamber where the atmosphere is to be duplicated by moist air charged with selected aerosols and trace condensable vapours. An array of external detectors and mass spectrometers is used to analyse the physical and chemical characteristics of the aerosols and trace gases during beam exposure. Where beam effects are found, the experiment will seek to evaluate their significance in the atmosphere by incorporating them into aerosol and cloud models. Abstract

Charged vector D*{sup +}(2010) meson production is studied in a high energy neutrino bubble chamber experiment with mean neutrino energy of 141 GeV. The D*{sup +} are produced in (5.6 {+-} 1.8)% of the neutrino charged current interactions, indicating a steep increase of cross section with energy. The mean fractional hadronic energy of the D*{sup +} meson is 0.55 {+-} 0.06.

Abstract

In 1952 D. Glaser demonstrated that a radioactive source’s radiation could boil 135°C superheated-diethyl ether in a 3-mm Ø glass vessel and recorded bubble track growth on high-speed film in a 2-cm3 chamber. This Bubble Chamber (BC) promised improved particle track time and spatial resolution and cycling rate. Hildebrand and Nagle, U of Chicago, reported Liquid Hydrogen minimum ionizing particle boiling in August 1953. John Wood created the 3.7-cm Ø Liquid Hydrogen BC at LBL in January 1954. By 1959 the Lawrence Berkley Laboratory (LBL) Alvarez group’s “72-inch” BC had tracks in liquid hydrogen. Within 10 years bubble chamber volumes increased by a factor of a million and spread to every laboratory with a substantial high-energy physics program. The BC, particle accelerators and special separated particle beams created a new era of High Energy Physics (HEP) experimentation. The BC became the largest most complex cryogenic installation at the world’s HEP laboratories for decades. Abstract

Inclusive and semi-inclusive production of Λ and $$\bar \Lambda$$ in K p interactions is studied at an incident momentum of 70 GeV/c. Cross sections and single particle distributions are presented and compared with data at lower energies. Scaling is observed between 32 and 70 GeV/c in the Feynman x variable in the target and the beam fragmentation regions for Λ and $$\bar \Lambda$$ inclusive production respectively. An increase of Λ ( $$\bar \Lambda$$ ) production is observed in the beam (target) fragmentation regions, whereas the data at 70 and 32 GeV/c are reasonably close in the central region. The dependence of the Λ( $$\bar \Lambda$$ ) polarization as a function of x is measured and found to be in general agreement with the results at 32 GeV/c. The (Λ $$\bar \Lambda$$ ) pair production cross section increases significantly from 32 to 70 GeV/c. The Λ and $$\bar \Lambda$$ production associated with an identified proton is also studied. The distribution with c.m. rapidity, y, of the net charge of hadrons produced in K p interactions at 110 GeV/c is presented and compared with K p and π p data at several energies from 10 to 360 GeV/c. In both reactions and at all energies the net charge changes sign from positive to negative at y∼0. The total net charge in the forward direction is −0.70±0.02 at 110 GeV/c. It decreases with increasing energy and the results are consistent with a total net forward charge of −1.0 at infinite energies. These results imply that the fragments of the beam and target particles are far from being completely separated even at the highest energies available at present accelerators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The data comes from the Big European Bubble Chamber BEBC filled with hydrogen, exposed to an rf reparated K beam at the CERN SPS accelerator. The inclusive cross section for protons with laboratory momentum p≦1.2 GeV/c is equal to (6.1±0.1) mb. Inclusive Δ-production is studied for | t|<1.0(GeV/c). Comparisons are made with other K p data and with pp data at 69 GeV/c. 40. A giant argon bubble chamber with long sensitive time for nucleon decay experiments

Abstract

A giant argon bubble chamber could be a suitable detector to investigate the decay modes of nucleons in an unbiased way. We are investigating the possibility of operating such a chamber with a track sensitive duty cycle of up to ∼ 50%. A small and not very clean bubble chamber has been successfully operated in an expanded pressure stabilized mode with a duty cycle of 10%. A tentative design of a 3000 m3argon bubble chamber is discussed.

42. Pulse stretching in a Q-switched ruby laser for bubble chamber holography

Abstract

In testing a holgraphic particle track recording system for the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber, it was shown that the peak power of Q-switched laser pulses (~50-ns duration) at the required energy gave rise to boiling during the chamber expansion. A pulse stretching technique is described which was developed to reduce the peak power. Applied to a ruby laser (oscillator and three amplifiers) with a maximum Q-switched output of 30 J, pulses of up to 100-μs duration with coherence up to and exceeding 11 m at 2.5 μs were produced. These pulses were amplified to ~5 J without shape degradation. The considerably increased coherence length will find applications in many fields of pulsed holography, and its use with fiber optics is particularity promising.

Abstract

Scintillation light, produced by 200 MeV/cpions in a liquid argon bubble chamber/calorimeter was measured. Results from the test device show that this signal could be used in future large bubble chambers to trigger the flash on the occurrence of an interesting event. Furthermore, this signal give rough information about total track lengths, hence energy contained in massive electromagnetic and hadronic showers, and could complement measurements obtained by charge collection.

Abstract

The complete slowing down of electrons with initial energies up to 20 MeV in several materials was investigated with the aid of a bubble chamber. The real path lengths and penetration depths of electrons were evaluated; the distribution of these and some other derived quantities are given and discussed. The distributions of the path lengths—which are essentially influenced by energy loss due to bremsstrahlung — are in good agreement with a theory of BLUNCK.
