The study on the effectiveness of teaching and learning mathematics online focused on teachers' perspectives on the experiences they face in real-life situations in the Nepalese context. This study examines the effectiveness of online mathematics teaching and learning in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is based on a qualitative exploratory case study design. The results of the study are based on the holistic views of eight persistently selected university mathematics teachers. It examines the effectiveness of teaching mathematics online covering four areas; teacher preparation and technological competence, the issue concerning students, access to resources, and the nature of mathematics. Teachers' technical competence and preparation for online lessons were rated as satisfactory. Similarly, student-related issues were found to be uncooperative and dependent on teacher guidance during online learning. Likewise, students were found to benefit according to their access to resources. Urban students have an advantage in online learning over remote students. Similarly, the results suggest that online math classes were perceived as difficult due to the nature of mathematics. Thus, the study concludes that higher-level online mathematics education has several determinants that make online mathematics education effective compared to face-to-face classroom instruction.

Abstract Background Vector-borne diseases, such as malaria, pose a significant global threat, and climatological factors greatly influence their intensity. Tropical countries, like India, are particularly vulnerable to such diseases, making accurate estimation of malaria risk crucial. Methods This study utilized the well-known Vector-borne Disease Community Model, VECTRI, developed by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste. The model was implemented to estimate malaria’s Entomological Inoculation Rate (EIR). Future climatic prediction datasets, including CMIP 5 and population data sets, were used as inputs for the analysis. Three RCP scenarios are considered (Representative Concentration Pathways are climate change scenarios that project radiative forcing to 2100 due to future greenhouse gas concentrations). The projections covered the period from 1 Jan, 2020, to 31 Dec, 2029. Results The estimated mean EIR for the years 2020–2029 ranged, and a significant decline in malaria risk was observed with all RCP 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5 scenarios. Each year 0.3 to 2.6 [min–max] EIR/person/day decline is observed with a strong decline in man rainfall ranging from 5 to 17 [min–max] mm/year and associated high temperatures ranging from 0.03 to 0.06 [min–max] °C/year. During the post-monsoon period, August to November were identified as highly prone to malaria transmission. Spatial analysis revealed that the east coast of India faced a higher vulnerability to malaria risk, which kept increasing through RCP scenarios. Thus, it is essential to exercise caution, especially in areas with heavy rainfall. Conclusion This research provides valuable insights for policy-makers, highlighting the need to implement future strategies to mitigate malaria risk effectively. By utilizing these findings, appropriate measures can be taken to combat the threat posed by malaria and protect public health.

Abstract Introduction Melioidosis caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, often referred to as a great mimicker or escapist, evades not only the immune system, but also all manual identification methods in an under-equipped clinical microbiology laboratory due to its tedious identification process. This is a case report of disseminated melioidosis with septic arthritis, misdiagnosed both clinicoradiologically and microbiologically as disseminated tuberculosis or other bacterial infection. Case history A middle-aged Asian diabetic male presented with high-grade fever and breathlessness for 4 days along with left knee and ankle swelling for 40 days. Previous hospitalization records revealed growth of pan-sensitive Acinetobacter spp. from ankle and a chest X-ray suspecting tuberculosis for which antibiotic and antitubercular regimen were initiated. After admission, repeated blood cultures and pus culture (ankle and knee joint) confirmed Burkholderia pseudomallei with VITEK-II automated identification system. Recommended therapy was initiated according to revised Darwin’s guideline, leading to gradual cure of the patient. Conclusion Misidentification leads to inadequate treatment, as melioidosis medication is different from other bacterial infections. Here initiation of meropenem- and cotrimoxazole-intensive therapy for 4 weeks, and 6-month eradication phase with cotrimoxazole, resulted in gradual recovery of the patient. It took around 21 days of intensive antibiotic therapy to get bacteriological clearance from blood, which signifies the tenacious nature of this infection.

Abstract This study examines the spatiotemporal variability of drought and associated physical processes over the Arabian Peninsula (AP). For this purpose, we computed the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) for the period 1951–2020 using the Climate Research Unit and fifth generation ECMWF atmospheric reanalysis datasets. By applying rotated empirical orthogonal function analysis on the SPEI data, we identified four homogeneous and coherent drought regions. Abstract Organic electrode materials (OEMs) possess low discharge potentials and charge‒discharge rates, making them suitable for use as affordable and eco-friendly rechargeable energy storage systems without needing metals such as lithium or sodium. OEMs can provide a sustainable energy economy by their development into stable and efficient next-generation high-power batteries. Despite the presence of several classes of OEMs, such as conducting polymers, 2D and 3D metal-organic frameworks, organolithium derivatives, 2D covalent organic frameworks, aromatic heterocyclic imides, and viologen derivatives, since their introduction in the 1960s, carbonyl-based molecules have maintained low discharge potentials and stable charging/discharging properties. Nevertheless, several redox-active organic molecules, including carbonyl derivatives, show poor electrochemical stability and ionic mobility in standard battery electrolytes, hampering their commercial use. Therefore, with the increased demand for renewable energy, the synthesis and testing of carbonyl-based OEMs continue to be performed in energy research. This review summarizes recent advances in developing carbonyl-based OEMs and their performance in rechargeable batteries.

First language (L1) is seen as a tool that aids in teaching the second language (L2). However, an over-reliance on L1 can slow down the learning process and prevent the achievement of true L2 fluency. This qualitative study aims to investigate the role of the L1 in L2 instruction, particularly its potential to both aid and hinder the learning process. The study employs an interpretive approach, focusing on the perspectives of 14 college-level English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. These participants were selected using judgmental sampling. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and subsequently analyzed using a thematic approach. The findings indicate that teachers utilize L1 in various ways, including enhancing comprehension, assisting lower-level students, saving time, recapturing students’ attention, and introducing new vocabulary. The study concludes that while L1 can serve as a valuable tool in L2 instruction, its use should be strategic to optimize learning outcomes. It highlights how L1 can act as a bridge to aid L2 learning, indicating the need for a balanced usage.

Abstract Background The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that Asia and Africa have the highest Chronic Liver Disease (CLD) mortality rate. Cirrhosis, responsible for 22.2 fatalities per 100,000 people, is India’s 10th most common cause of mortality. The increasing prevalence of chronic liver disease necessitates a study to identify predictive factors for patients who visit the emergency department. Identifying elements that enhance the predictive value of mortality in unstable patients with CLD complications is important in emergency departments. This study aims to determine Clinical and Laboratory Parameters as mortality predictors in adult chronic liver disease patients. Methodology The study was conducted at the emergency department of a tertiary healthcare center in Northern India. Patients with chronic liver disease above 18 years of age who satisfied the inclusion criteria were clinically evaluated. Clinical and demographic details were collected, and data was analyzed. Results Two hundred thirty-six patients were enrolled. The mean age was 50.77 ± 14.26 years. 78.4% of the participants were men. Abdominal distension, affecting 59.7% of patients, was the most common presenting ailment, followed by melena and hematemesis, affecting 41.9% and 32.6%, respectively. The mean stay in the emergency department was 10.29 ± 8.10 h. Refractory septic shock, the leading cause of mortality, accounts for 69.2% of all deaths, alongside grade 4 hepatic encephalopathy and massive Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) bleeding, as identified in our study. Factors such as altered mental sensorium, high respiratory rate, low SpO2, increased heart rate, low systolic blood pressure, low diastolic blood pressure, and low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) on Emergency Department (ED) arrival are significantly associated with mortality. Conclusions Chronic liver disease, a prevalent condition in India, most commonly seen in middle aged men and lower socioeconomic groups. The parameters independently associated with mortality in our study were presence of altered mental sensorium, Glasgow coma scale, Child Pugh class and need for ICU admission. Understanding the presentation pattern, and mortality predictors can help ED physicians in managing acute events and follow-ups.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability caused by a neurological problem. It is a worldwide problem with a prevalence of 5-10% of the population. It is described mainly by difficulties in reading, spelling, accuracy, fluency, and decoding abilities. This article is chiefly concerned to provide an overview of dyslexia, some key issues based on identification, intervention, and support for dyslexic learners, and its effects on learning mathematics. The common characteristics of dyslexic learners vary from person to person. The context of the learner, availability of the resources, and teaching strategy also impact an individual to develop dyslexia. The dyslexic learner can be identified in various ways however the four levels of the sequential model are discussed to identify the dyslexic learner. Only two intervention methods as a response to intervention and the Orton-Gillingham method are discussed. Similarly, different ways of supporting dyslexic learners and the effects of dyslexia in learning mathematics are also discussed.

Urbanization induces homogenization and changes the behavioural patterns of various bird species, thereby facilitating coexistence and prompting adaptations to disturbances in urban environments. However, there is limited research on the influence of how urbanization affects bird tolerance towards humans, especially in developing sub-tropical regions such as Nepal, which is undergoing rapid unplanned urbanization. This study identified the flight initiation distance (FID) as a proxy for assessing bird tolerance. We focused on evaluating the human tolerance levels of 33 bird species using their FIDs in urban and rural habitats within Kathmandu Valley, a rapidly urbanizing city in South Asia. We found higher tolerance in urban birds than in their rural conspecifics, which varies mainly with dietary guild and season. The positive impact on FID was associated with time of the day and body size, while a negative association was observed with flock size, mean population density of humans and interaction between body size and elevation. Our study highlights the increased tolerance level of birds in urban areas, probably owing to habituation, and emphasizes the imperative need to investigate the potential adverse effect on urban bird population owing to this increased tolerance level.

Kidney stone is an alarming global disease due to its rising incidence and prevalence. FTIR spectroscopic analysis reveals that calcium oxalate is one of the most frequent chemical constituents in kidney stones. DFT calculations indicate that the calcium oxalate can interact through charge transfer process in biological activities. Among various proteins, lysozyme is one of the promoter proteins in nephrolithiasis of calcium oxalate type kidney stone. The location, conformation and interactions of calcium oxalate with the active residues of lysozyme contribute the binding energy of -4.18 kcal/mol. The characterization of kidney stones, DFT calculations of calcium oxalate, and binding interactions of calcium oxalate-lysozyme complex contribute to the understanding of nephrolithiasis.

Leea asiatica (L.) Ridsdale has been used by different ethnic communities to manage diseased conditions that can be traced to oxidative stress and cellular inflammations but scientific evidences to support the claim are scanty. The objective of this study was to isolate and identify the antioxidants present in the aerial parts of Leea asiatica, perform their molecular docking against proteins to inspect whether the traditional uses of the plant can be validated by an in-silico approach. Quercetin (1), gallic acid (2), kaempferol (3), methyl gallate (4), myricetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (5), (−)-epicatechin-3-O-gallate (6) and (−)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (7) were isolated from the 70 % methanolic extract of the aerial parts. Compounds 2, 4, 6, and 7 are reported for the first time from Leea asiatica. Quercetin (1), gallic acid (2), (−)-epicatechin-3-O-gallate (6) and (−)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (7) showed potent antioxidant activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. Molecular docking with NADPH oxidase and TNF-α revealed that epicatechin-3-O-gallate, epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate and quercetin bound with the least binding energy amongst the isolated compounds as well as standard (Trolox and Prednisolone). By molecular dynamics analysis, epicatechin-3-O-gallate maintained stable conformation with NADPH oxidase and TNF-α and was found to possess good ADMET profile thereby validating the ethnic use of the plant as a medicine in the management of inflammatory conditions by an in vitro and in silico approach.

Abstract The applicability and accuracy of high‐resolution Real‐Time Meso‐scale Analysis (RTMA) system is assessed over India for the first time. The RTMA is a high‐spatial (2.5 km) and temporal resolution analysis system for near‐surface weather conditions. It is used to simulate near‐surface air temperature over India during the Heatwave (HW) period 12th to 20th April 2023. The verification analysis of temperature using the GLDAS gridded temperature shows reasonable improvement in the analysis from RTMA by capturing regional features compared to first‐guess. The spatial and temporal verification using the IMD station observations also confirms the value addition of RTMA in capturing the locations of recorded highest Tmax and their daily variations. The location‐specific heat stress analysis of RTMA shows high skill over many locations during HW days. Heat stress regions have been accurately brought out in the RTMA. Hence, the RTMA can be used for now‐casting and severe weather monitoring.

Lactoferrin, a member of the transferrin family, is one of the promoter proteins for calcium oxalate-type kidney stone formation. It exhibits a remarkable ability to interact with metals and oxalate ions. The prevalence of calcium oxalate in kidney stones was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectra. The quantum chemical properties of calcium oxalate and dolichin A calculated by density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory indicate their potential for hydrogen bonding and nonbonding interactions with the receptor proteins. From molecular docking analysis, the binding free energy of dolichin A was −7.78 kcal/mol, which was the best of twenty-four phytochemicals from Macrotyloma uniflorum, and that of calcium oxalate was −3.86 kcal/mol to lactoferrin. Furthermore, dolichin A having favorable physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties offers post molecular dynamics molecular mechanics generalized Born surface area free energy of −17.61 ± 4.03 kcal/mol, indicating the strong binding interactions, and, therefore, it acts as a potential inhibitor of the lactoferrin.

Bhutan primarily relies on land transportation; hence, diverse technologies are crucial for ensuring the safety of the drivers. Dust, fog, smoke, and other dry particles often obstructs the road visibility. Furthermore; complex mountainous terrain and steep topography increase fog formation, while winding winds heighten accident risks. This study aims to reduce weather-related accidents by introducing an IoT-centric system designed to enhance visibility and provide timely alerts to drivers. The system employs the Dark Channel Prior (DCP) algorithm for real-time foggy video processing and refining of dehazed video using the Guided Filtering method. This research also focuses on developing an alert system using a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor with detection range of 15 m. Real-time testing and validation were conducted along the fog-prone Thimphu-Phuentsholing highway, specifically in the Jumja region. To evaluate the performance of the system; validation metrics, including the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) were determined for quantitative analysis, and the original and dehazed videos were compared on the same screen for visual analysis. The effectiveness of obstacle detection system was evaluated by comparing the actual measured distance to the distance displayed on the screen. The results depicts that the proposed system significantly improves visibility and effectively sirens drivers to impending obstacles within the sufficient stopping sight distance through display of clear video in the dehazing system. The study highlights the potential of advanced IoT and computer vision technologies to enhance road safety and reduce accident rates under low-visibility conditions.

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) stabilize CO2 emissions by converting CO2/H2O into synfuel. Current-Voltage (i-V) characteristics of an electrolyte-supported button cell (NiO-YSZ/NiO-SDC/ScSZ/LSCF-GDC/LSCF) were measured as a function of temperature, water vapor concentration, and CO2 gas concentrations. The cell microstructure was characterized by the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM). FE-SEM micrographs depict that the electrolyte layer is relatively dense, and porous fuel and air electrode layers are well adhered to the electrolyte. The i-V curves were obtained at a scan rate of 0.02 Vs−1 from 0.3 to 1.5 V. Electrolysis current density increases as the temperature increases. SOEC performance increases, but SOFC performance decreases with increased water vapor concentration. Electrolysis current densities decrease as the CO2 concentration increases. The i-V characteristics show only ohmic polarization under fuel-lean and fuel-rich conditions. At optimal conditions, current density values at 800 °C/1.5 V are -174, -187, and -195 mA cm−2 for 5 %H2O, 30 %CO2, and 30 %CO2/5 %H2O co-electrolysis. At 800 °C, open-circuit voltage (OCV) values for H2O, CO2, and co-electrolysis are 0.906, 0.891, and 0.885 V, respectively. The electrolysis area-specific resistances (ASRs) give information on the reduction of CO2 or H2O, forming CO or H2, respectively. At optimal conditions, ASR values are 3.43, 3.29, and 3.18 Ω cm2 for H2O, CO2, and co-electrolysis, respectively. Co-electrolysis has a lower ASR value than pure H2O and CO2 electrolysis, indicating that H2O and CO2 are involved in the electrochemical processes.
