2. Unsupervised Early Exit in DNNs with Multiple Exits

Abstract

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are generally designed as sequentially cascaded differentiable blocks/layers with a prediction module connected only to its last layer. DNNs can be attached with prediction modules at multiple points along the backbone where inference can stop at an intermediary stage without passing through all the modules. The last exit point may offer a better prediction error but also involves more computational resources and latency. An exit point that is `optimal' in terms of both prediction error and cost is desirable. The optimal exit point may depend on the latent distribution of the tasks and may change from one task type to another. During neural inference, the ground truth of instances may not be available and error rates at each exit point cannot be estimated. Hence one is faced with the problem of selecting the optimal exit in an unsupervised setting. Prior works tackled this problem in an offline supervised setting assuming that enough labeled data is available to estimate the error rate at each exit point and tune the parameters for better accuracy. However, pre-trained DNNs are often deployed in new domains for which a large amount of ground truth may not be available. We model the problem of exit selection as an unsupervised online learning problem and use bandit theory to identify the optimal exit point. Specifically, we focus on Elastic BERT, a pre-trained multi-exit DNN to demonstrate that it `nearly' satisfies the Strong Dominance (SD) property making it possible to learn the optimal exit in an online setup without knowing the ground truth labels. We develop upper confidence bound (UCB) based algorithm named UEE-UCB that provably achieves sub-linear regret under the SD property. Thus our method provides a means to adaptively learn domain-specific optimal exit points in multi-exit DNNs. Abstract

BackgroundConsolidative autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHCT) is commonly used for patients with multiple myeloma (MM). We studied AHCT use and outcomes in patients with MM ≥75 years old.MethodsPatients with MM ≥75 years old receiving AHCT between 2013 and 2017 in the United States were identified using the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research database. Relapse and/or progression (REL), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were modeled using Cox proportional hazards models. Covariates used were age, sex, Karnofsky performance score (KPS), HCT-comorbidity index (HCT-CI), International Staging System and/or Durie-Salmon stage, high-risk cytogenetics, melphalan dose, and disease status at and 1 year after transplant. Abstract

Unlike unrelated donor registries, transplant centers lack uniform approaches to related donor assessment and deferral. To test whether related donors are at increased risk for donation-related toxicities, we conducted a prospective observational trial of 11,942 related and unrelated donors aged 18-60 years. Bone marrow (BM) was collected at 37 transplant and 78 National Marrow Donor Program centers, and peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) were collected at 42 transplant and 87 unrelated donor centers in North America. Possible presence of medical comorbidities was verified prior to donation, and standardized pain and toxicity measures were assessed pre-donation, peri-donation, and one year following. Abstract

The development of reduced-intensity approaches for allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation has resulted in growing numbers of older related donors (RDs) of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs). The effects of age on donation efficacy, toxicity, and long-term recovery in RDs are poorly understood. To address this we analyzed hematologic variables, pain, donation-related symptoms, and recovery in 1211 PBSC RDs aged 18 to 79 enrolled in the Related Donor Safety Study. RDs aged > 60 had a lower median CD34+ level before apheresis compared with younger RDs (age > 60, 59 × 106/L; age 41 to 60, 81 × 106/L; age 18 to 40, 121 × 106/L; P < .001). This resulted in older donors undergoing more apheresis procedures (49% versus 30% ≥ 2 collections, P < .001) and higher collection volumes (52% versus 32% > 24 L, P < .001), leading to high percentages of donors aged > 60 with postcollection thrombocytopenia

Abstract

In the present study, a total of 155 desi cotton accessions (Gossypium arboreum L.) were evaluated using six qualitative traits in an augmented design. The distribution of genotypes categorized under the selected traits and their states were computed for all the genotypes. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified three principal components accounting for 56.91% of the variability in the arboreum germplasm with PC 1 contributing 20.51% and PC 2 contributing 18.62%. The results of the eigen vectors of six qualitative traits indicated that the traits namely anther colour, plant body colour and boll shape could serve as distinguishable morphological markers for characterization of G. arboreum genotypes. Correlation studies revealed significant positive association among the traits under study. Scatter plot between PC 1 and PC 2 showed the convex of the hull occupied by the genotypes namely DWDA 1701, NDLA 3086, JLA 0610, CAN 1038, RG5 21, HD 544, PA 778, GAM 261, FDK2 95, K 12 and CIsa 90 presenting their diverse nature among the genotypes. The clustering analysis separated 155 G. arboreum accessions into five major clusters and maximum genotypes were placed in Cluster V. Combined results of PCA and cluster analysis selected DWDA 1701, GAM2 60, TAS 130, CISA 1793 and RG 690 as promising genotypes with highest degree of divergence for future desi cotton breeding research.

Abstract

We describe baseline incidence and risk factors for new cancers in 4161 persons receiving autotransplants for multiple myeloma in the United States from 1990 to 2010. Observed incidence of invasive new cancers was compared with expected incidence relative to the US population. The cohort represented 13,387 person-years at-risk. In total, 163 new cancers were observed, for a crude incidence rate of 1.2 new cancers per 100 person-years and cumulative incidences of 2.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.09 to 3.17), 4.2% (95% CI, 3.49 to 5.00), and 6.1% (95% CI, 5.08 to 7.24) at 3, 5, and 7 years, respectively. The incidence of new cancers in the autotransplantation cohort was similar to age-, race-, and gender-adjusted comparison subjects with an observed/expected (O/E) ratio of 1.00 (99% CI, .81 to 1.22). However, acute myeloid leukemia and melanoma were observed at higher than expected rates with O/E ratios of 5.19 (99% CI, 1.67 to 12.04; P = .0004), and 3.58 (99% CI, 1.82 to 6.29; P < .0001), respectively. Obesity, older age, and male gender were associated with increased risks of new cancers in multivariate analyses. This large data set provides a baseline for comparison and defines the histologic type specific risk for new cancers in patients with MM receiving postautotransplantation therapies, such as maintenance.
