Coping with increasing demand with limited capacity in a highly specialised service requires innovation. This review explores the impact of patient-initiated follow up, arguing that the introduction of this model has been highly effective in the management of patients with Behҫet's syndrome, a lifelong relapsing and remitting auto-inflammatory disease, at one national centre in the UK. Allowing patients to self-direct their care through patient-initiated follow up has resulted in an engaged and empowered cohort that values clinical review when required. Access to rapid in-person assessment when needed was found to be highly appreciated by patients at the centre, while also facilitating prompt recognition and management of flare ups, which reduced the incidence of life-changing or life-threatening events. The author believes that patient-initiated follow up could be embedded into any specialised service, releasing appointment slots so that new patient referrals or safety reviews can be expedited. Investigations of face identification have typically focussed on matching faces to photographic IDs. Few researchers have considered the task of searching for a face in a crowd. In Experiment 1, we created the Chokepoint Search Test to simulate real-time search for a target. Performance on this test was poor (39% accuracy) and showed moderate associations with tests of face matching and memory. In addition, trial-level confidence predicted accuracy, and for those participants who were previously familiar with one or more targets, higher familiarity was associated with increased accuracy. In Experiment 2, we found improvements in performance on the test when three recent images of the target, but not three social media images, were displayed during searches. Taken together, our results highlight the difficulties inherent in real-time searching for faces, with important implications for those security personnel who carry out this task on a daily basis.

This study explores the relationship between the dispositions toward research that writing teachers convey through their assignments and those that their students express in their reflective writing. We applied the term "problem-exploring" to a set of dispositions described by the ACRL Framework and coded each clause of instructor assignment text and student reflective writing from six FYW sections, half of which were working with a librarian to incorporate core concepts from the Framework. We found a strong correlation between the proportion of instructors' problem-exploring assignment language and students' expressions of problem-exploring at end of term. The rates of problem-exploring were significantly higher for instructors and students in sections working with the Framework. Our results offer a new lens through which to view research-assignment design, provide evidence of how assignments can foster problem-exploring, and support the value of pedagogical collaboration with librarians.

Accurate estimates of fecundity and spawn timing are essential to fisheries management but can be difficult to obtain in nonaggregating broadcast-spawning species such as the commercially harvested sea cucumber Parastichopus californicus. Individuals of P. californicus collected from Southeast Alaska (SEAK) over 3 y were examined to determine the timing of spawning based on seasonal variations in gonad indices (GI). Gonad indices measured at different time points in the annual reproductive cycle were compared with gonad lipid content and egg development to validate GI as an indicator of gonad maturation. Fecundity was estimated as the total number of eggs and as the number of viable eggs produced in both live-spawned and strip-spawned animals. Results suggest spawning may occur slightly earlier than previously reported in British Columbia, Canada, where fecundity was about two times higher than in SEAK. Seasonal changes in gonad total lipid and maturation stage were recorded. Gonad index was moderately correlated with both gonad lipid content and maturation stage. Estimates of total fecundity and viable eggs based on live spawning did not significantly differ among the 3 y sampled. Live spawning yielded comparable estimates of total fecundity and viable eggs per gram female wet weight compared with strip spawning. These findings inform aquaculture efforts and management of the commercially harvested SEAK population of P. californicus. Not all Resident Assistants experience burnout; however, the numerous responsibilities, conflicting roles, and other demands of a 24-hour-per-day job combined with their own schoolwork make RAs particularly vulnerable. Participants (N=57) completed a questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Findings suggest that RAs on first-year floors are at greatest risk. (EMK)
