Abstract

Context. Since July 2014, the Gaia mission has been engaged in a high-spatial-resolution, time-resolved, precise, accurate astrometric, and photometric survey of the entire sky.\ud \ud \ud \ud Aims. We present the Gaia Science Alerts project, which has been in operation since 1 June 2016. We describe the system which has been developed to enable the discovery and publication of transient photometric events as seen by Gaia.\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods. We outline the data handling, timings, and performances, and we describe the transient detection algorithms and filtering procedures needed to manage the high false alarm rate. We identify two classes of events: (1) sources which are new to Gaia and (2) Gaia sources which have undergone a significant brightening or fading. Validation of the Gaia transit astrometry and photometry was performed, followed by testing of the source environment to minimise contamination from Solar System objects, bright stars, and fainter near-neighbours.\ud \ud \ud \ud Results. We show that the Gaia Science Alerts project suffers from very low contamination, that is there are very few false-positives. We find that the external completeness for supernovae, CE = 0.46, is dominated by the Gaia scanning law and the requirement of detections from both fields-of-view. Where we have two or more scans the internal completeness is CI = 0.79 at 3 arcsec or larger from the centres of galaxies, but it drops closer in, especially within 1 arcsec.\ud \ud \ud \ud Conclusions. The per-transit photometry for Gaia transients is precise to 1% at G = 13, and 3% at G = 19. The per-transit astrometry is accurate to 55 mas when compared to Gaia DR2. The Gaia Science Alerts project is one of the most homogeneous and productive transient surveys in operation, and it is the only survey which covers the whole sky at high spatial resolution (subarcsecond), including the Galactic plane and bulge.

6. Gaia16apd – a link between fast and slowly declining type I superluminous supernovae

Abstract

We present ultraviolet (UV), optical and infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy of the type Ic superluminous supernova (SLSN) Gaia16apd (=SN 2016eay), covering its evolution from 26 d before the g-band peak to 234.1 d after the peak. Gaia16apd was followed as a part of the NOT Unbiased Transient Survey (NUTS). It is one of the closest SLSNe known (z = 0.102 ± 0.001), with detailed optical and UV observations covering the peak. Gaia16apd is a spectroscopically typical type Ic SLSN, exhibiting the characteristic blue early spectra with O ii absorption, and reaches a peak Mg = −21.8 ± 0.1 mag. However, photometrically it exhibits an evolution intermediate between the fast and slowly declining type Ic SLSNe, with an early evolution closer to the fast-declining events. Together with LSQ12dlf, another SLSN with similar properties, it demonstrates a possible continuum between fast and slowly declining events. It is unusually UV-bright even for an SLSN, reaching a non-K-corrected Muvm2 ≃ −23.3 mag, the only other type Ic SLSN with similar UV brightness being SN 2010gx. Assuming that Gaia16apd was powered by magnetar spin-down, we derive a period of P = 1.9 ± 0.2 ms and a magnetic field of B = 1.9 ± 0.2 × 10$^{14}$ G for the magnetar. The estimated ejecta mass is between 8 and 16 M⊙, and the kinetic energy between 1.3 and 2.5 × 10$^{52}$ erg, depending on opacity and assuming that the entire ejecta is swept up into a thin shell. Despite the early photometric differences, the spectra at late times are similar to slowly declining type Ic SLSNe, implying that the two subclasses originate from similar progenitors.

Abstract

SB would like to thank Tara Murphy, Martin Bell, Paul Hancock, Keith Bannister, Chris Blake and Bing Zhang for useful discussions., We report the discovery of four Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) in the ongoing SUrvey for Pulsars and Extragalactic Radio Bursts at the Parkes Radio Telescope: FRBs 150610, 151206, 151230 and 160102. Our real-time discoveries have enabled us to conduct extensive, rapid multimessenger follow-up at 12 major facilities sensitive to radio, optical, X-ray, gamma-ray photons and neutrinos on time-scales ranging from an hour to a few months post-burst. No counterparts to the FRBs were found and we provide upper limits on afterglow luminosities. None of the FRBs were seen to repeat. Formal fits to all FRBs show hints of scattering while their intrinsic widths are unresolved in time. FRB 151206 is at low Galactic latitude, FRB 151230 shows a sharp spectral cut-off, and FRB 160102 has the highest dispersion measure (DM = 2596.1 ± 0.3 pc cm−3) detected to date. Three of the FRBs have high dispersion measures (DM > 1500 pc cm−3), favouring a scenario where the DM is dominated by contributions from the intergalactic medium. The slope of the Parkes FRB source counts distribution with fluences >2 Jy ms is α=−2.2+0.6−1.2 and still consistent with a Euclidean distribution (α = −3/2). We also find that the all-sky rate is 1.7+1.5−0.9×103 FRBs/(4π sr)/day above ∼2Jyms and there is currently no strong evidence for a latitude-dependent FRB sky rate., The Parkes radio telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array are part of the Australia Telescope National Facility which is funded by the Commonwealth of Australia for operation as a National Facility managed by CSIRO. Abstract

Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 469(4), 4465 – 4482 (2017). doi:10.1093/mnras/stx1098, We report on the discovery of a new fast radio burst (FRB), FRB 150215, with the Parkes radio telescope on 2015 February 15. The burst was detected in real time with a dispersion measure (DM) of 1105.6 ± 0.8 pc cm$^{−3}$, a pulse duration of 2.8 $^{+1.2}_{-0.5}$ ms, and a measured peak flux density assuming that the burst was at beam centre of 0.7$^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ Jy. The FRB originated at a Galactic longitude and latitude of 24.66°, 5.28° and 25° away from the Galactic Center. Abstract

White dwarfs are compact stars, similar in size to Earth but approximately 200,000 times more massive. Isolated white dwarfs emit most of their power from ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths, but when in close orbits with less dense stars, white dwarfs can strip material from their companions and the resulting mass transfer can generate atomic line and X-ray emission, as well as near- and mid-infrared radiation if the white dwarf is magnetic. However, even in binaries, white dwarfs are rarely detected at far-infrared or radio frequencies. Here we report the discovery of a white dwarf/cool star binary that emits from X-ray to radio wavelengths. The star, AR Scorpii (henceforth AR Sco), was classified in the early 1970s as a δ-Scuti star, a common variety of periodic variable star. Our observations reveal instead a 3.56-hour period close binary, pulsing in brightness on a period of 1.97 minutes. The pulses are so intense that AR Sco's optical flux can increase by a factor of four within 30 seconds, and they are also detectable at radio frequencies. They reflect the spin of a magnetic white dwarf, which we find to be slowing down on a 10 7 -year timescale. The spin-down power is an order of magnitude larger than that seen in electromagnetic radiation, which, together with an absence of obvious signs of accretion, suggests that AR Sco is primarily spin-powered. Although the pulsations are driven by the white dwarf's spin, they mainly originate from the cool star. AR Sco's broadband spectrum is characteristic of synchrotron radiation, requiring relativistic electrons. These must either originate from near the white dwarf or be generated in situ at the M star through direct interaction with the white dwarf's magnetosphere.

Abstract

Nurses are as susceptible as others to trends and fads which have an unproven impact on the provision of quality health care. One enduring trend has been the adoption of nursing models which, it is claimed, unifies nurses in distinctive approaches to caring. In Newfoundland, the current financial constraints in health care have created an opportunity to investigate the soundness of jumping on the nursing model "bandwagon". The author explores the meaning of nursing knowledge, the importance of developing knowledge for safe, effective practice, and explains how nursing models have become associated with nursing knowledge and imbued with almost mystical qualities. One aspect not seen in the literature-that of the cost of implementing a model for nursing care in hospitals-is presented. The implications, financial and ethical, are discussed and, in conclusion, another approach to encourage philosophizing about nursing work is outlined.

Abstract

Possession of an internally consistent body of knowledge from which principles and practice can be derived is the pre-eminent characteristic of professional groups. Active, enquiring minds are required as nursing struggles to develop such a base. Yet, recent evidence, such as the 1992 report of the Economic Council of Canada, suggests a pervasive decline in basic language competencies. The illiteracy of candidates entering professional schools of nursing is creating problems for students, faculty and the profession, with ramifications for public safety and professional growth. This article describes problems and proposes action that can, and must, be taken to remedy the situation.

Recently the profession of nursing has been greatly concerned with the recruitment and retention of nurses. Provincial studies have indicated that the problem is multifaceted and very complex. It is not enough merely to raise wages. Another factor which has major implications for the retention of female nurses is the relationship of the work married women do at home to the paid work they do in nursing. Hochschild's (1989) research on the "Second Shift" is presented in this article to illustrate the need for nursing administrators to calculate into the equation of recruitment and retention, the impact of the "second shift."

Abstract

Sharing is an important concept in nursing. In this paper it is explored as a feature of professional development in order to ascertain the status of sharing in the profession. Four factors are considered. First, there is a question related to whether or not nurses demonstrate the characteristics needed for sharing. The argument is that female sex role socialisation precludes nurses from developing the requisite qualities. Second, the status of men in the profession and its potential effects are discussed. Third, the concept of mentoring as seen in the research on women and nurses is developed. Fourth, the critical implications of the type of organisation nurses work in are presented. Each of these factors impinge on the ability to share and the quality of the sharing. This may mean that leaders in nursing emerge in spite of, not because of, the professional sharing that occurs.

The question is asked, Do some nursing models present a restricting view? If so, then the type of research in nursing may be restricted also. The author examines the writings of several nurse theorists to demonstrate the development of a singular focus, the patient. This consideration is followed by an introduction of the thoughts of critics on the narrow perspective embraced by some nurses. Blind acceptance of any nursing model is questioned. The use of a model must be accompanied by discussion, exploration and adaptation. No one model provides a true picture for all nursing situations.

Abstract

Psychomotor skill-learning is a basic aspect of nursing education. Students are expected to perform skills in relation to patient care. How can nursing instructors optimize skill learning and how can they analyse where a student is going wrong? The critical components of the psychomotor-skill learning process are identified and listed under the control of the instructor or the student. A checklist provides for mutual examination of the process to see if a problem area can be isolated. The article provides a review of a process which tends to become second nature to experienced nurses, but it remains one of which nursing instructors must be conscious, in order to understand why some students do not learn nursing skills easily or safely.
