This article contains reports from the various research groups in the SUNY Buffalo Department of Computer Science, Vision Group, and Graduate Group in Cognitive Science It is organized by the different research topics. However, it should be noted that the individual projects might also be organized around the methodologies and tools used in the research, and, of course, many of the projects fall under more than one category.

Sippy1 has attributed the chronicity of ulcer to the corrosive action of gastric juice, and on this basis administered small amounts of alkali to the patient hourly, over a long period (from three to four weeks in the hospital and several weeks afterward). By a combination of powders—calcium carbonate, magnesium oxid, sodium bicarbonate and bismuth subcarbonate—in varying proportions, he was able completely to neutralize the gastric juice, and thereby to promote healing of the ulcer. He says, "It may be helpful to know that in rare instances it has required the equivalent of 30 grains (2 gm.) each of calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, every hour, midway between feedings and every half hour after the last feeding until 9 p. m. to control the free acidity." For many years clinicians have been aware of the fact that not infrequently the symptoms of infection of the gallbladder and appendix and of achylia gastrica of unknown etiology may simulate those of typical gastric or duodenal ulcer. Since reflex pain may be indistinguishable from the true pain in ulcer, to what should this gastric pain, brought on by extragastric lesions, be attributed? Is there direct damage to the stomach and duodenum through this reflex mechanism?In the consideration of the cause of gastric pain from gastric and duodenal ulcers or reflexly from an infected gallbladder, appendix, or achylia gastrica, two factors are of importance. On the one hand, is the question of acidity or hyperacidity and hypersecretion, and, on the other hand, variations in tonicity, intragastric tension, and peristalsis of the stomach and duodenum. CLINICAL study has shown that antacids are the most important single factor in controlling gastric pain and discomfort due to hyperacidity and peptic ulcer. A review of medical literature and advertisements by pharmaceutic companies reveals that physicians have been led to believe that antacids, especially aluminum gels and magnesium trisilicate, have an astringent and protective coating action on the gastric mucosa. There has been no definite proof brought forward to substantiate or refute the suggestion that aluminum gels have an astringent or coating effect on the mucosa of the stomach.Ivy and his associates1 have called attention to the fact that the aluminum combines with the gastric mucus to form a flaky precipitate, which adheres to the mucosa of the stomach and duodenum. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE The following experimental work was begun in the summer of 1915, at the suggestion of Dr. A. J. Carlson, as a further contribution toward the explanation of the cause of death in acute ileus, or high intestinal obstruction. The theories propounded to explain the fatal issue in high intestinal obstruction in man, studied comparatively in animals, are almost as diverse as the number of workers in the field. Chief among the theories that have been submitted since systematic experimentation was begun in this line may be enumerated the following:Splanchnic paresis, or disorder of the nervous mechanism controlling the cardiac and vasomotor systems, due to irritation of the nerves in the intestinal wall.Bacterial infection, or outward passage of bacteria through the intestinal wall; invading the peritoneum and producing a peritonitis, or invading the blood and lymphatics and producing a septicemia.Autointoxication, or the absorption of various poisons

This study comprises a group of patients known to have active, far advanced pulmonary tuberculosis complicated by intestinal tuberculosis.In evaluating the various types of medical treatment suggested for the cure of intestinal tuberculosis, it is necessary to assume that the patients under observation are suffering from active intestinal tuberculosis. It is not our aim in this paper to discuss in detail the methods used in arriving at a clinical diagnosis; they will be submitted for publication at a later date. These methods of diagnosis were followed in approximately 553 cases over a period of five years. Fifty-five patients came to autopsy, and of these the diagnosis was correct for 86.4 per cent. Two of those who survived had tuberculous ulcers of the sigmoid flexure at the onset of treatment, as demonstrated by our proctologist, Dr. Clemens Martin. These ulcers were completely healed during the course of treatment (table 1).
