Abstract

Context: Dryland rivers are unique ecosystems, where drought and flood play an important role in shaping the ecosystem. River regulation has altered the natural flow regime in many of these systems, affecting migration cues and connectivity for many species. Aims: To quantify the discharge-related movements of Murray cod and golden perch within the Condamine–Balonne River subject to differing levels of river regulation. Methods: We quantified flow regime variability, river regulation and fish movement to develop generalised additive mixed models to predict movement probability for Murray cod and golden perch. Results: Both species showed strong positive relationships between discharge and movement. Murray cod did not show any association with river regulation; however, medium-sized individuals were significantly more likely to move than were smaller or larger fish. Golden perch movements varied among levels of regulation, were more likely to move as body weight increased and showed seasonality of movement, moving less during winter. Conclusions: This study presents the largely unobserved movement behaviours of fish across a gradient of river regulation and environmental conditions in the northern Murray–Darling Basin. Implications: This information is valuable for informing policy and management decisions that may affect species' life-history requirements in analogous river systems. Quantifying flow-related movements of Murray cod and golden perch subject to differing levels of flow regulation is important for water management decision-making. Our study observed that movement patterns for either species were driven by combinations of discharge, river regulation, season, and body size. Tailored management strategies for these fish species should be developed on the basis of location, river regulation and flow regime. Abstract

During the first 20 years of operation, the Fermilab Tevatron developed strong coupling between the two transverse degrees of freedom. The required strength of the circuit of skew quadrupole magnets used to correct for coupling, though capable, had increased by an order of magnitude since 1983. Changes made to the Tevatron for colliding beams operation had altered the skew quadrupole corrector distribution and strong coupling became evident, often encumbering routine operation during the colliding beam physics run. It was discovered that the superconducting coils of the main dipole magnets had become vertically displaced relative to their yokes since their construction. The ensuing systematic skew quadrupole field introduced by this displacement accounts for the required corrector settings and observed beam behavior. The magnets were adjusted in situ over the course of several long maintenance periods and the Tevatron performance improved as a result., Comment: 22 pp

Abstract

The geometric structure of the Rh$_8^+$ cation is investigated using a combination of far-infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The energetic ordering of the different structural motifs is found to depend sensitively on the choice of pure or hybrid exchange functionals. Comparison of experimental and calculated spectra suggests the cluster to have a close-packed, bicapped octahedral structure, in contrast to recent predictions of a cubic structure for the neutral cluster. Our findings demonstrate the importance of including some exact exchange contributions in the DFT calculations, via hybrid functionals, when applied to rhodium clusters, and cast doubt on the application of pure functionals for late transition metal clusters in general., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Data from the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS), mounted on the International Space Station (ISS), were used to develop and test algorithms for remotely retrieving ecosystem productivity. Twenty DESIS images were used from three widely separated forested study sites representing deciduous and conifer forests. Gross primary production (GPP) values from eddy covariance flux towers at the sites were matched with DESIS spectral reflectances collected on the same days. Multiple algorithms were successful relating spectral reflectance with GPP, including: spectral vegetation indices (SVI) sensitive to chlorophyll content, SVI used in a photosynthetic light-use efficiency model framework, spectral shape characteristics through spectral derivatives and absorption feature analysis, and statistical models leading to multiband hyperspectral indices from partial least squares regression. Successful algorithms were able to achieve R2 better than 0.7 using a diverse set of observations combining data from different sites from multiple years and at multiple times during the year. The demonstrated robustness of the algorithms provides some confidence in using DESIS imagery to map spatial patterns of GPP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

SLICER data were acquired in support of BOREAS at all of the TF sites in the SSA and NSA, and along transects between the study areas. Data were acquired on 5 days between 18-Jul and 30-Jul-1996. Each coverage of a tower site is typically 40 km in length, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 10 lines across each tower oriented in a variety of azimuths. The SLICER data were acquired simultaneously with ASAS hyperspectral, multiview angle images. The SLICER Level 3 products consist of binary files for each flight line with a data record for each laser shot composed of 13 parameters and a 600-byte waveform that is the raw record of the backscatter laser energy reflected from Earth's surface. The SLICER data are stored in a combination of ASCII and binary data files.

14. Lidar Altimeter Measurements of Canopy Structure: Methods and Validation for Closed Canopy, Broadleaf Forests

Abstract

Lidar altimeter observations of vegetated landscapes provide a time-resolved measure of laser pulse backscatter energy from canopy surfaces and the underlying ground. Airborne lidar altimeter data was acquired using the Scanning Lidar Imager of Canopies by Echo Recovery (SLICER) for a successional sequence of four, closed-canopy, deciduous forest stands in eastern Maryland. The four stands were selected so as to include a range of canopy structures of importance to forest ecosystem function, including variation in the height and roughness of the outer-most canopy surface and the vertical organization of canopy stories and gaps. The character of the SLICER backscatter signal is described and a method is developed that accounts for occlusion of the laser energy by canopy surfaces, transforming the backscatter signal to a canopy height profile (CHP) that quantitatively represents the relative vertical distribution of canopy surface area. The transformation applies an increased weighting to the backscatter amplitude as a function of closure through the canopy and assumes a horizontally random distribution of the canopy components. SLICER CHPs, averaged over areas of overlap where lidar ground tracks intersect, are shown to be highly reproducible. CHP transects across the four stands reveal spatial variations in vegetation, at the scale of the individual 10 m diameter laser footprints, within and between stands. Averaged SLICER CHPs are compared to analogous height profile results derived from ground-based sightings to plant intercepts measured on plots within the four stands. Tbe plots were located on the segments of the lidar ground tracks from which averaged SLICER CHPs were derived, and the ground observations were acquired within two weeks of the SLICER data acquisition to minimize temporal change. The differences in canopy structure between the four stands is similarly described by the SLICER and ground-based CHP results, however a Chi-square test of similarity documents differences that are statistically significant. The differences are discussed in terms of measurement properties that define the smoothness of the resulting CHPs and Lidar Altimeter Measurements of Canopy Structure - Harding et al. canopy properties that may vertically bias the CHP representations of canopy structure. The statistical differences are most likely due to the more noisy character of the ground-based CHPs, especially high in the canopy where ground-based sightings are rare resulting in an underestimate of canopy surface area and height, and to departures from the assumption of horizontal randomness which bias the CHPs toward the observer (upward for SLICER and downward for ground-based CHPs). The results demonstrate that the SLICER observations reliably provide a measure of canopy structure that reveals ecologically interesting structural variations such as those characterizing a successional sequence of closed-canopy, broadleaf forest stands.

15. Multibeam Laser Altimeter for Planetary Topographic Mapping

Abstract

Laser altimetry provides an active, high-resolution, high-accuracy method for measurement of planetary and asteroid surface topography. The basis of the measurement is the timing of the roundtrip propagation of short-duration pulses of laser radiation between a spacecraft and the surface. Vertical, or elevation, resolution of the altimetry measurement is determined primarily by laser pulse width, surface-induced spreading in time of the reflected pulse, and the timing precision of the altimeter electronics. With conventional gain-switched pulses from solid-state lasers and nanosecond resolution timing electronics, submeter vertical range resolution is possible anywhere from orbital altitudes of approximately 1 km to altitudes of several hundred kilometers. Horizontal resolution is a function of laser beam footprint size at the surface and the spacing between successive laser pulses. Laser divergence angle and altimeter platform height above the surface determine the laser footprint size at the surface, while laser pulse repetition rate, laser transmitter beam configuration, and altimeter platform velocity determine the spacing between successive laser pulses. Multiple laser transmitters in a single laser altimeter instrument that is orbiting above a planetary or asteroid surface could provide across-track as well as along-track coverage that can be used to construct a range image (i.e., topographic map) of the surface. We are developing a pushbroom laser altimeter instrument concept that utilizes a linear array of laser transmitters to provide contiguous across-track and along-track data. The laser technology is based on the emerging monolithic combination of individual, 1-sq cm diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser pulse emitters. Details of the multi-emitter laser transmitter technology, the instrument configuration, and performance calculations for a realistic Discovery-class mission will be presented.

16. Surface scattering properties estimated from modeling airborne multiple emission angle reflectance data

Abstract

Here, researchers apply the Hapke function to airborne bidirectional reflectance data collected over three terrestrial surfaces. The objectives of the study were to test the range of natural surfaces that the Hapke model fits and to evaluate model parameters in terms of known surface properties. The data used are multispectral and multiple emission angle data collected during the Geologic Remote Sensing Field Experiment (GRSFE) over a mud-cracked playa, an artificially roughened playa, and a basalt cobble strewn playa at Lunar Lake Playa in Nevada. Airborne remote sensing data and associated field measurements were acquired at the same time. The airborne data were acquired by the Advanced Solid State Array Spectroradiometer (ASAS) instrument, a 29-spectral band imaging system. ASAS reflectance data for a cobble-strewn surface and an artificially rough playa surface on Lunar Lake Playa can be explained with the Hanke model. The cobble and rough playa sites are distinguishable by a single scattering albedo, which is controlled by material composition; by the roughness parameter, which appears to be controlled by the surface texture and particle size; and the symmetry factor of the single particle phase function, which is controlled by particle size and shape. A smooth playa surface consisting of compacted, fine-grained particles has reflectance variations that are also distinct from either the cobble site or rough playa site. The smooth playa appears to behave more like a Lambertian surface that cannot be modeled with the Hapke function.

Abstract

The geometric structures of small cationic rhodium clusters Rhn+ (n = 6-12) are investigated by comparison of experimental far-infrared multiple photon dissociation spectra with spectra calculated using density functional theory. The clusters are found to favor structures based on octahedral and tetrahedral motifs for most of the sizes considered, in contrast to previous theoretical predictions that rhodium clusters should favor cubic motifs. Abstract

Density functional theory is used to investigate the structures of cationic rhodium cluster oxides, Rh6Om+ (m=1,4). On the monoxide and dioxide, the oxygen atoms occupy bridge sites, while on trioxide and tetroxide clusters, high-coordination sites are favored. A range of spin multiplicities are investigated for each cluster, with high spin multiplicities found to be less favored for the oxides compared with the naked metal clusters. The dissociation of nitric oxide on low-energy isomers of Rh6O4+ is investigated and found to be unfavorable compared to molecular adsorption due to a combination of thermodynamic and kinetic factors. These calculations are consistent with, and help to account for, the experimentally observed reactivity of rhodium and rhodium oxide clusters with nitric oxide [M. S. Ford et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. 22. Rift deflection, migration, and propagation: Linkage of the Ethiopian and Eastern rifts, Africa

Abstract

The Main Ethiopian and Eastern (Gregory) rifts, sectors of the East African rift system, overlap in a 300-km-wide system of extensional basins that is more than three times the breadth of either rift away from the zone of overlap. The oldest volcanic rocks (Eocene) and possibly the oldest rift basins (Oligocene) of the East African rift system occur in this zone of overlap. The objectives of field, remote sensing, and geochronology (K-Ar and [sup.40]Ar/[sup.39]Ar) studies in southwestern Ethiopia were to establish a chronology of rifting and volcanism in the zone of overlap, and to correlate stratigraphic sequences with those in the Kenya rift to the south and in the Main Ethiopian rift to the north. Field observations and cross sections show that basins are bounded by steeply dipping faults, stratal dips are [is less than] 30 [degrees], and that extension accommodated by the intrusion of dikes is volumetrically insignificant. Thus, the style of faulting is similar to that elsewhere in East Africa south of the Afar rift. Initial volcanism between ca. 45 and 33 Ma preceded faulting and uplift, except for reactivation of some Mesozoic rift structures near the Sudan-Ethiopia border and in northern Kenya. Extensional basins began to form in late Oligocene time in the Eastern rift, and in early Miocene time in the Main Ethiopian rift. Small degrees of extension and associated volcanism in the broadly rifted zone may have been triggered by extension in the Red Sea, as well as by lithospheric heating above a mantle plume. The anomalous breadth of the zone is a consequence of rift propagation and migration, rather than basin-and-range--style extension; both the Main Ethiopian rift and Eastern rifts have propagated along north-south lines, and the Eastern rift has migrated ~200 km eastward since late Oligocene time. The distribution of seismicity and Quaternary volcanism suggest that the Eastern and Main Ethiopian rifts are currently linked across a 200-km-wide zone between the Omo and Segen basins.

Abstract

We report the results of a search for CP-violating decay rate asymmetries (ACP) in the charm decay modes D+K-K+, D+K»*0K+, D++, and D0K+K-. Our measurements are all consistent with zero asymmetry: ACP=-0.0310.068, ACP(K*K)=-0.120.13, ACP()=0.0660.086, and ACP(KK)=0.0240.084. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract

A measurement of the lifetime of the charmed strange baryon c0 is presented. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The measurement has been made using 4210 c0-+ decays. The lifetime of the c0 is measured to be 0.101-0.017+0.0250.005 ps and its mass is measured to be 2462.13.11.4 MeV/c2.

Analysis of data from the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687 for events containing fully and partially reconstructed pairs of charmed mesons is presented. Correlations from DD pairs are used to study production dynamics.

Abstract

Measurements of the mass and lifetime of the c+ decaying into -++ are presented. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687. The mass of the c+ is measured to be 2464.42.01.4 MeV/c2 and the lifetime is measured to be 0.41-0.08+0.110.02 ps.
