Search

The way pulsars spin down is not understood in detail, but a number of possible physical mechanisms produce a spin-down rate that scales as a power of the rotation rate ($\dot\nu\propto-\nu^n$), with the power-law index $n$ called the braking index. PSR B0540-69 is a pulsar that in 2011, after 16 years of spinning down with a constant braking index of 2.1, experienced a giant spin-down change and a reduction of its braking index to nearly zero. Here, we show that following this episode the braking index monotonically increased during a period of at least four years and stabilised at ~1.1. We also present an alternative interpretation of a more modest rotational irregularity that occurred in 2023, which was modelled as an anomalous negative step of the rotation rate. Our analysis shows that the 2023 observations can be equally well described as a transient swing of the spin-down rate (lasting ~65 days), and the Bayesian evidence indicates that this model is strongly preferred., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication by ApJL

Numerical simulations of relativistic plasmas have become more feasible, popular, and crucial for various astrophysical sources with the availability of computational resources. The necessity for high-accuracy particle dynamics is especially highlighted in pulsar modelling due to the extreme associated electromagnetic fields and particle Lorentz factors. Including the radiation-reaction force in the particle dynamics adds even more complexity to the problem, but is crucial for such extreme astrophysical sources. We have also realised the need for such modelling concerning magnetic mirroring and particle injection models proposed for AR Sco, the first white dwarf pulsar. This paper demonstrates the benefits of using higher-order explicit numerical integrators with adaptive time step methods to solve the full particle dynamics with radiation-reaction forces included. We show that for standard test scenarios, namely various combinations of uniform $E$- and $B$-fields and a static dipole $B$-field, the schemes we use are equivalent to and in extreme field cases outperform standard symplectic integrators in accuracy. We show that the higher-order schemes have massive computational time improvements due to the adaptive time steps we implement, especially in non-uniform field scenarios and included radiation reaction where the particle gyro-radius rapidly changes. When balancing accuracy and computational time, we identified the adaptive Dormand-Prince eighth-order scheme to be ideal for our use cases. The schemes we use maintain accuracy and stability in describing the particle dynamics and we indicate how a charged particle enters radiation-reaction equilibrium and conforms to the analytic Aristotelian Electrodynamics expectations., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, accepted by journal

The Single Aperture Large Telescope for Universe Studies (SALTUS) is a mission concept for a far-infrared observatory developed under the recent Astrophysics Probe Explorer opportunity from NASA. The enabling element of the program is a 14 m diameter inflatable primary mirror, M1. Due to its importance to SALTUS and potentially other space observatories, this paper focuses entirely on M1. We present a historical overview of inflatable systems, illustrating that M1 is the logical next step in the evolution of such systems. The process of design and manufacture is addressed. We examine how M1 performs in its environment in terms of operating temperature, interaction with the solar wind, and shape change due to non-penetrating particles. We investigate the longevity of the inflatant in detail and show it meets mission lifetime requirements with ample margin and discuss the development and testing to realize the flight M1., Comment: Submitted to the J. The SALTUS Probe mission will provide a powerful far-infrared (far-IR) pointed space observatory to explore our cosmic origins and the possibility of life elsewhere. The observatory employs an innovative deployable 14-m aperture, with a sunshield that will radiatively cool the off-axis primary to <45K. We describe the space observatory architecture and mission design of the SALTUS mission, a NASA Astrophysics Probe Explorer concept. SALTUS will address key far-infrared science using a 14-m diameter <45 K primary reflector (M1) and will provide unprecedented levels of spectral sensitivity for planet, solar system, and galactic evolution studies, and cosmic origins. Drawing from Northrop Grumman's extensive NASA mission heritage, the observatory flight system is based on the LEOStar-3 spacecraft platform to carry the SALTUS Payload. The Payload is comprised of the inflation control system (ICS), Sunshield Module (SM), Cold Corrector Module (CCM), Warm Instrument Electronics Module, and Primary Reflector Module (PRM). The 14-m M1 is an off-axis inflatable membrane radiatively cooled by a two-layer sunshield (~1,000 m2 per layer). The CCM corrects for residual aberration from M1 and delivers a focused beam to two instruments - High Resolution Receiver (HiRX) and SAFARI-Lite. The CCM and PRM reside atop a truss-based composite deck which also provides a platform for the attitude control system. The 5-year mission lifetime is driven by a two-consumable architecture: the propellant system and the ICS. The Core Interface Module (CIM), a multi-faceted composite truss structure, provides a load path with high stiffness, mechanical attachment, and thermal separation between the Payload and spacecraft. The SM attaches outside the CIM with its aft end integrating directly to the bus. The spacecraft maintains an attitude off M1's boresight with respect to the Sun line to facilitate the <45 K thermal environment. SALTUS will reside in a Sun-Earth halo L2 orbit with a maximum Earth slant range of 1.8 million km thereby reducing orbit transfer delta-v. Recent observations have demonstrated that very-low mass stars and brown dwarfs are capable of sustaining strong magnetic fields despite their cool and neutral atmospheres. These kG field strengths are inferred based on strong highly circularly polarized GHz radio emission, a consequence of the electron cyclotron maser instability. Crucially, these observations imply the existence of energetic non-thermal electron populations, associated with strong current systems, as are found in the auroral regions of the magnetized planets of the Solar System. Intense auroral electron precipitation will lead to electron collisions with the H$_{2}$ gas that should ultimately generate the ion H$_{3}^{+}$. With this motivation, we targeted a sample of ultracool dwarfs, known to exhibit signatures associated with aurorae, in search of the K-band emission features of H$_{3}^{+}$ using the Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea. From our sample of 9 objects, we found no clear indication of H$_{3}^{+}$ emission features in our low-medium resolution spectra (R$\sim$3600). We also modeled the impact of an auroral electron beam on a brown dwarf atmosphere, determining the depth at which energetic beams deposit their energy and drive particle impact ionization. We find that the H$_{3}^{+}$ non-detections can be explained by electron beams of typical energies $\gtrsim$2-10~keV, which penetrate deeply enough that any H$_{3}^{+}$ produced is chemically destroyed before radiating energy through its infrared transitions. Strong electron beams could further explain the lack of UV detections, and suggest that most or nearly all of the precipitating auroral energy must ultimately emerge as thermal emissions deep in brown dwarf atmospheres., Comment: accepted to ApJ

The goal of our work is to study the mode changes of the radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar PSR J2021+4026 with improved detail. By accurately characterizing variations in the gamma-ray spectrum and pulse profile, we aim to relate the Fermi-LAT observations to theoretical models and interpret the mode changes in terms of variations in the structure of a multipolar dissipative magnetosphere. We continually monitored the rotational evolution and the gamma-ray flux of PSR J2021+4026 using more than 13 years of Fermi-LAT data with a binned likelihood approach. We clearly detect the previous mode changes and confirm a more recent mode change that occurred around June 2020. We investigated the features of the phase-resolved spectrum and pulse profile, and we inferred the macroscopic conductivity, the electric field parallel to the magnetic field, and the curvature radiation cutoff energy. These physical quantities are related to the spin-down rate and the gamma-ray flux and therefore are relevant to the theoretical interpretation of the mode changes. We computed the relative variations in the best-fit parameters, finding typical flux changes between 13% and 20%. Correlations appear between the gamma-ray flux and the spectral parameters, as the peak of the spectrum shifts by about 10% toward lower energies when the flux decreases. The analysis of the pulse profile reveals that the pulsed fraction of the light curve is larger when the flux is low. We introduced a simple magnetosphere model that combines a dipole field with a strong quadrupole component. Magnetars are neutron stars with extremely high magnetic fields that exhibit various X-ray phenomena such as sporadic sub-second bursts, long-term persistent flux enhancements, and variable rates of rotation period change. In 2020, a fast radio burst (FRB), akin to cosmological millisecond-duration radio bursts, was detected from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154, confirming the long-suspected association between some FRBs and magnetars. However, the mechanism for FRB generation in magnetars remains unclear. Here we report the X-ray discovery of an unprecedented double glitch in SGR 1935+2154 within a time interval of approximately nine hours, bracketing an FRB that occurred on October 14, 2022. Each glitch involved a significant increase in the magnetar's spin frequency, being among the largest abrupt changes in neutron star rotation ever observed. Between the glitches, the magnetar exhibited a rapid spin-down phase, accompanied by a profound increase and subsequent decline in its persistent X-ray emission and burst rate. We postulate that a strong, ephemeral, magnetospheric wind provides the torque that rapidly slows the star's rotation. Radio emission from pulsars can be used to map out their distances through dispersion measure (DM), which quantifies the amount of radio pulse dispersion. However, this method relies on accurately modelling the free electron density in the line of sight. Here, we present a detailed study of the multiwavelength emission from PSR J1720$-$0534, a black widow compact binary millisecond pulsar discovered in 2021, which the latest electron density model of the Galaxy (Yao et al. 2017) places at only 191 pc. We obtained and analysed deep multiwavelength observations in the $\gamma$-ray (Fermi-Large Area Telescope, 2008-2022), optical (Las Cumbres Observatory, 2.7 h), near-infrared (Nordic Optical Telescope, 3.5 h), and X-ray (Swift-X-Ray Telescope, 10 ks) bands. We found no significant detection of $\gamma$-ray, optical, near-infrared, or X-ray counterparts around the radio-timing position of PSR J1720$-$0534, which we thus nickname 'the invisible black widow'. Employing the most constraining near-infrared limit ($J>23.4$ mag), we established a lower limit on the source distance, $d>1.1$ kpc, assuming conservative properties for the black widow companion star. This distance lower limit differs drastically (by a factor of more than 5) from the Yao et al. DM distance estimate. We attribute this difference to the inclusion in the Yao et al. model of a large and dense component towards the North Polar Spur. Considering our results and recent parallax distances to other pulsars in this direction, we argue that such a local and large component in the electron density model of the Galaxy is unnecessary., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. We report on X-ray polarization measurements of the extra-galactic Crab-like PSR B0540-69 and its Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using a ~850 ks Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) exposure. The PWN is unresolved by IXPE. No statistically significant polarization is detected for the image-averaged data, giving a 99% confidence polarization upper limit (MDP99) of 5.3% in 2-8 keV energy range. However, a phase-resolved analysis detects polarization for both the nebula and pulsar in the 4-6 keV energy range. For the PWN defined as the off-pulse phases, the polarization degree (PD) of (24.5 ${\pm}$ 5.3)% and polarization angle (PA) of (78.1 ${\pm}$ 6.2){\deg} is detected at 4.6${\sigma}$ significance level, consistent with the PA observed in the optical band. In a single on-pulse window, a hint of polarization is measured at 3.8${\sigma}$ with polarization degree of (50.0 ${\pm}$ 13.1)% and polarization angle of (6.2 ${\pm}$ 7.4){\deg}. A 'simultaneous' PSR/PWN analysis finds two bins at the edges of the pulse exceeding 3${\sigma}$ PD significance, with PD of (68 ${\pm}$ 20)% and (62 ${\pm}$ 20)%; intervening bins at 2-3${\sigma}$ significance have lower PD, hinting at additional polarization structure., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, author's version of the paper accepted for publication in ApJ

Occultations provide indirect sensitivity to the number density of small Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) too faint to directly detect telescopically. We present results from the Caltech HI-speed Multicolor camERA (CHIMERA) survey with the Palomar Hale Telescope, which monitored stars over the central 5'x5' of the M22 globular cluster along the ecliptic plane for serendipitous occultations by kilometer-scale KBOs over 63 hr across 24 nights at a 33 Hz frame rate simultaneously in i' and g'. We adapted dense-field photometry and occultation template fitting techniques to this dataset, finding a 95% confidence upper limit on the occultation rate corresponding to an ecliptic sky density of <10^7 deg^-2 of >1 km diameter classical KBOs. Context. We have investigated the multiwavelength emission of PSR J2021+4026, the only isolated gamma-ray pulsar known to be variable, which in October 2011 underwent a simultaneous change in gamma-ray flux and spin-down rate, followed by a second mode change in February 2018. Multiwavelength monitoring is crucial to understand the physics behind these events and how they may have affected the structure of the magnetosphere. Aims.The monitoring of pulse profile alignment is a powerful diagnostic tool for constraining magnetospheric reconfiguration. We aim to investigate timing or flux changes related to the variability of PSR J2021+4026 via multiwavelength observations, including gamma-ray observations from Fermi-LAT, X-ray observations from XMM-Newton, and a deep optical observation with the Gran Telescopio Canarias.Methods. We performed a detailed comparison of the timing features of the pulsar in gamma and X-rays and searched for any change in phase lag between the phaseogram peaks in these two energy bands. Although previous observations did not detect a counterpart in visible light, we also searched for optical emission that might have increased due to the mode change, making this pulsar detectable in the optical. Results.We have found a change in the gamma-to X-ray pulse profile alignment by 0.21$\pm$0.02 in phase, which indicates that the first mode change affected different regions of the pulsar magnetosphere. No optical counterpart was detected down to g'=26.1 and r'=25.3. Conclusions.We suggest that the observed phase shift could be related to a reconfiguration of the connection between the quadrupole magnetic field near the stellar surface and the dipole field that dominates at larger distances. We report on our monitoring of the strong-field magnetar-like pulsar PSR J1846-0258 with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and the timing and spectral evolution during its outburst in August 2020. Phase-coherent timing solutions were maintained from March 2017 through November 2021, including a coherent solution throughout the outburst. We detected a large spin-up glitch of magnitude \Delta\nu/\nu = 3 X 10^{-6} at the start of the outburst and observed an increase in pulsed flux that reached a factor of more than 10 times the quiescent level, a behavior similar to that of the 2006 outburst. Our monitoring observations in June and July 2020 indicate that the flux was rising prior to the SWIFT announcement of the outburst on August 1, 2020. We also observed several sharp rises in the pulsed flux following the outburst and the flux reached quiescent level by November 2020. The pulse profile was observed to change shape during the outburst, returning to the pre-outburst shape by 2021. Spectral analysis of the pulsed emission of NICER data shows that the flux increases result entirely from a new black body component that gradually fades away while the power-law remains nearly constant at its quiescent level throughout the outburst. Joint spectral analysis of NICER and simultaneous NuSTAR data confirms this picture. We develop kinetic plasma models of pulsar magnetospheres with magnetic-field-line-dependent plasma injection that reveal the importance of various magnetosphere regions in regulating the gamma-ray emission. We set different particle injection rates for the so-called open, closed, and separatrix zones. Moderate particle injection rates in open and closed zones ensure a global field structure close to the force-free one, while the dissipation occurs mainly in and around the equatorial current sheet. The particles injected in the separatrix zone affect the particle populations that enter the equatorial current sheet region and, therefore, the corresponding accelerating electric fields, particle energies, the spectral cutoff energy, and gamma-ray efficiency. The separatrix zone models reproduce the recently discovered fundamental plane of gamma-ray pulsars consistent with curvature radiation emission, the gamma-ray light-curve shapes, and the radio-lag vs. peak-separation correlation reported in the Fermi second pulsar catalog. The model beaming factors indicate that the pulsar total gamma-ray luminosities listed in the Fermi catalogs are overestimations of the actual ones. We find that the radiation reaction limited regime starts ceasing to govern the high-energy emission for spin-down powers less than $10^{34}$ erg/s. Our results also indicate that toward high magnetic inclination angles, the "Y point" around the rotational equator migrates well inside the light cylinder sparking additional peaks in the gamma-ray pulse profiles. We find that an equivalent enhanced particle injection beyond the Y point strengthens these features making the model gamma-ray light curves inconsistent with those observed., Comment: 28 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Magnetars are a special subset of the isolated neutron star family, with X-ray and radio emission mainly powered by the decay of their immense magnetic fields. Many attributes of magnetars remain poorly understood: spin-down glitches or the sudden reductions in the star's angular momentum, radio bursts reminiscent of extra-galactic Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), and transient pulsed radio emission lasting months to years. Here we unveil the detection of a large spin-down glitch event ($|\Delta\nu/\nu| = 5.8_{-1.6}^{+2.6}\times10^{-6}$) from the magnetar SGR~1935+2154 on 2020 October 5 (+/- 1 day). We find no change to the source persistent surface thermal or magnetospheric X-ray behavior, nor is there evidence of strong X-ray bursting activity. Yet, in the subsequent days, the magnetar emitted three FRB-like radio bursts followed by a month long episode of pulsed radio emission. Given the rarity of spin-down glitches and radio signals from magnetars, their approximate synchronicity suggests an association, providing pivotal clues to their origin and triggering mechanisms, with ramifications to the broader magnetar and FRB populations. We postulate that impulsive crustal plasma shedding close to the magnetic pole generates a wind that combs out magnetic field lines, rapidly reducing the star's angular momentum, while temporarily altering the magnetospheric field geometry to permit the pair creation needed to precipitate radio emission., Comment: 51 pages, 3 tables, 8 figures. Magnetars are neutron stars characterized by strong surface magnetic fields generally exceeding the quantum critical value of 44.1 TeraGauss. High-energy photons propagating in their magnetospheres can be attenuated by QED processes like photon splitting and magnetic pair creation. In this paper, we compute the opacities due to photon splitting and pair creation by photons emitted anywhere in the magnetosphere of a magnetar. Axisymmetric, twisted dipole field configurations embedded in the Schwarzschild metric are treated. The paper computes the maximum energies for photon transparency that permit propagation to infinity in curved spacetime. Special emphasis is given to cases where photons are generated along magnetic field loops and/or in polar regions; these cases directly relate to resonant inverse Compton scattering models for the hard X-ray emission from magnetars and Comptonized soft gamma-ray emission from giant flares. We find that increases in magnetospheric twists raise or lower photon opacities, depending on both the emission locale, and the competition between field line straightening and field strength enhancement. Consequently, given the implicit spectral transparency of hard X-ray bursts and persistent "tail" emission of magnetars, photon splitting considerations constrain their emission region locales and the twist angle of the magnetosphere; these constraints can be probed by future soft gamma-ray telescopes such as COSI and AMEGO. Cosmic rays are mostly composed of protons accelerated to relativistic speeds. When those protons encounter interstellar material, they produce neutral pions which in turn decay into gamma rays. This offers a compelling way to identify the acceleration sites of protons. A characteristic hadronic spectrum, with a low-energy break around 200 MeV, was detected in the gamma-ray spectra of four Supernova Remnants (SNRs), IC 443, W44, W49B and W51C, with the Fermi Large Area Telescope. This detection provided direct evidence that cosmic-ray protons are (re-)accelerated in SNRs. Here, we present a comprehensive search for low-energy spectral breaks among 311 4FGL catalog sources located within 5 degrees from the Galactic plane. Using 8 years of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope between 50 MeV and 1 GeV, we find and present the spectral characteristics of 56 sources with a spectral break confirmed by a thorough study of systematic uncertainty. Our population of sources includes 13 SNRs for which the proton-proton interaction is enhanced by the dense target material; the high-mass gamma-ray binary LS~I +61 303; the colliding wind binary eta Carinae; and the Cygnus star-forming region. This analysis better constrains the origin of the gamma-ray emission and enlarges our view to potential new cosmic-ray acceleration sites., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Measuring a pulsar's rotational evolution is crucial to understanding the nature of the pulsar. Here we provide updated timing models for the rotational evolution of six pulsars, five of which are rotation phase-connected using primarily NICER X-ray data. For the newly-discovered fast energetic young pulsar, PSR J0058-7218, we increase the baseline of its timing model from 1.4 days to 8 months and not only measure more precisely its spin-down rate nudot = (-6.2324+/-0.0001)x10^-11 Hz s^-1 but also for the first time the second time derivative of spin rate nuddot = (4.2+/-0.2)x10^-21 Hz s^-2. For the fastest and most energetic young pulsar, PSR J0537-6910 (with 16 ms spin period), we detect 4 more glitches, for a total of 15 glitches over 4.5 years of NICER monitoring, and show that its spin-down behavior continues to set this pulsar apart from all others, including a long-term braking index n = -1.234+/-0.009 and interglitch braking indices that asymptote to <~ 7 for long times after a glitch. For PSR J1101-6101, we measure a much more accurate spin-down rate that agrees with a previous value measured without phase-connection. For PSR J1412+7922 (also known as Calvera), we extend the baseline of its timing model from our previous 1-year model to 4.4 years, and for PSR J1849-0001, we extend the baseline from 1.5 years to 4.7 years. After large galaxies merge, their central supermassive black holes are expected to form binary systems whose orbital motion generates a gravitational wave background (GWB) at nanohertz frequencies. Searches for this background utilize pulsar timing arrays, which perform long-term monitoring of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) at radio wavelengths. We use 12.5 years of Fermi Large Area Telescope data to form a gamma-ray pulsar timing array. Results from 35 bright gamma-ray pulsars place a 95\% credible limit on the GWB characteristic strain of $1.0\times10^{-14}$ at 1 yr$^{-1}$, which scales as the observing time span $t_{\mathrm{obs}}^{-13/6}$. We explore the validity of the recently reported fundamental plane (FP) relation of gamma-ray pulsars using 190 pulsars included in the latest 4FGL-DR3 catalog. This sample number is more than twice as large as that of the original study. The FP relation incorporates 4 parameters, i.e., the spin-down power, $\dot{\mathcal{E}}$, the surface magnetic field, $B_{\star}$, the total gamma-ray luminosity, $L_{\gamma}$, and a spectral cutoff energy, $\epsilon_{\rm cut}$. The derivation of $\epsilon_{\rm cut}$ is the most intriguing one because $\epsilon_{\rm cut}$ depends on the proper interpretation of the available phase-averaged spectra. We construct synthetic phase-averaged spectra, guided by the few existing phase-resolved ones, to find that the best fit cutoff energy, $\epsilon_{\rm c1}$, corresponding to a purely exponential cutoff (plus a power law) spectral form, is the parameter that optimally probes the maximum cutoff energy of the emission that originates from the core of the dissipative region, i.e., the equatorial current sheet. Computing this parameter for the 190 4FGL pulsars, we find that the resulting FP relation, i.e. the gamma-ray luminosity in terms of the other observables, reads $L_{\gamma}=10^{14.3\pm 1.3}(\epsilon_{\rm c1}/{\rm MeV})^{1.39\pm0.17}(B_{\star}/{\rm G})^{0.12\pm 0.03}(\dot{\mathcal{E}}/{\rm erg\;s^{-1}})^{0.39\pm 0.05}{\rm ~erg\;s^{-1}}$; this is in good agreement with both the empirical relation reported by Kalapotharakos et al. (2019) and the theoretically predicted relation for curvature radiation. Finally, we revisit the radiation reaction limited condition, to find it is a sufficient but not necessary condition for the theoretical derivation of the FP relation. Several populations of neutron stars have surface magnetic fields above the critical strength of 4.4 x 10^{13} G where the electron cyclotron energy equals its rest mass energy. These include high-field rotation-powered pulsars, X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDIN), and magnetars. In such ultra-strong fields, quantum effects in physical processes as well as additional exotic Quantum Electrodynamic processes only occurring at these high field strengths have a significant influence on the emitted radiation. We present an incremental version (4FGL-DR3, for Data Release 3) of the fourth Fermi-LAT catalog of gamma-ray sources. Based on the first twelve years of science data in the energy range from 50 MeV to 1 TeV, it contains 6658 sources. The analysis improves on that used for the 4FGL catalog over eight years of data: more sources are fit with curved spectra, we introduce a more robust spectral parameterization for pulsars, and we extend the spectral points to 1 TeV. The spectral parameters, spectral energy distributions, and associations are updated for all sources. Light curves are rebuilt for all sources with 1 yr intervals (not 2 month intervals). Among the 5064 original 4FGL sources, 16 were deleted, 112 are formally below the detection threshold over 12 yr (but are kept in the list), while 74 are newly associated, 10 have an improved association, and seven associations were withdrawn. Pulsars are split explicitly between young and millisecond pulsars. Pulsars and binaries newly detected in LAT sources, as well as more than 100 newly classified blazars, are reported. We add three extended sources and 1607 new point sources, mostly just above the detection threshold, among which eight are considered identified, and 699 have a plausible counterpart at other wavelengths. We discuss degree-scale residuals to the global sky model and clusters of soft unassociated point sources close to the Galactic plane, which are possibly related to limitations of the interstellar emission model and missing extended sources., Comment: accepted in ApJS; follow-up paper to 1902.10045

Magnetars, isolated neutron stars with magnetic field strengths typically $\gtrsim10^{14}$~G, exhibit distinctive months-long outburst epochs during which strong evolution of soft X-ray pulse profiles, along with nonthermal magnetospheric emission components, is often observed. Using near-daily NICER observations of the magnetar SGR 1830-0645 during the first 37 days of a recent outburst decay, a pulse peak migration in phase is clearly observed, transforming the pulse shape from an initially triple-peaked to a single-peaked profile. Such peak merging has not been seen before for a magnetar. Our high-resolution phase-resolved spectroscopic analysis reveals no significant evolution of temperature despite the complex initial pulse shape. Yet the inferred surface hot spots shrink during the peak migration and outburst decay. We suggest two possible origins for this evolution. For internal heating of the surface, tectonic motion of the crust may be its underlying cause. The inferred speed of this crustal motion is $\lesssim100$~m~day$^{-1}$, constraining the density of the driving region to $\rho\sim10^{10}$~g~cm$^{-3}$, at a depth of $\sim200$~m. Alternatively, the hot spots could be heated by particle bombardment from a twisted magnetosphere possessing flux tubes or ropes, somewhat resembling solar coronal loops, that untwist and dissipate on the 30-40~day timescale. The peak migration may then be due to a combination of field-line footpoint motion (necessarily driven by crustal motion) and evolving surface radiation beaming. These novel dataset paints a vivid picture of the dynamics associated with magnetar outbursts, yet it also highlights the need for a more generic theoretical picture where magnetosphere and crust are considered in tandem., Comment: ApJL accepted

We report on NICER X-ray monitoring of the magnetar SGR 1830-0645 covering 223 days following its October 2020 outburst, as well as Chandra and radio observations. We present the most accurate spin ephemerides of the source so far: $\nu=0.096008680(2)$~Hz, $\dot{\nu}=-6.2(1)\times10^{-14}$~Hz~s$^{-1}$, and a significant second and third frequency derivative terms indicative of non-negligible timing noise. The phase-averaged 0.8--7~keV spectrum is well fit with a double-blackbody (BB) model throughout the campaign. The BB temperatures remain constant at 0.46 and 1.2 keV. The areas and flux of each component decreased by a factor of 6, initially through a steep decay trend lasting about 46 days followed by a shallow long-term one. The pulse shape in the same energy range is initially complex, exhibiting three distinct peaks, yet with clear continuous evolution throughout the outburst towards a simpler, single-pulse shape. The rms pulsed fraction is high and increases from about 40% to 50%. We find no dependence of pulse shape or fraction on energy. These results suggest that multiple hotspots, possibly possessing temperature gradients, emerged at outburst-onset, and shrank as the outburst decayed. We detect 84 faint bursts with \nicer, having a strong preference for occurring close to the surface emission pulse maximum the first time this phenomenon is detected in such a large burst sample. This likely implies a very low altitude for the burst emission region, and a triggering mechanism connected to the surface active zone. Finally, our radio observations at several epochs and multiple frequencies reveal no evidence of pulsed or burst-like radio emission., Comment: ApJ accepted

Isolated neutron stars that are asymmetric with respect to their spin axis are possible sources of detectable continuous gravitational waves. This paper presents a fully-coherent search for such signals from eighteen pulsars in data from LIGO and Virgo's third observing run (O3). For known pulsars, efficient and sensitive matched-filter searches can be carried out if one assumes the gravitational radiation is phase-locked to the electromagnetic emission. In the search presented here, we relax this assumption and allow the frequency and frequency time-derivative of the gravitational waves to vary in a small range around those inferred from electromagnetic observations. We find no evidence for continuous gravitational waves, and set upper limits on the strain amplitude for each target. These limits are more constraining for seven of the targets than the spin-down limit defined by ascribing all rotational energy loss to gravitational radiation. In an additional search we look in O3 data for long-duration (hours-months) transient gravitational waves in the aftermath of pulsar glitches for six targets with a total of nine glitches. We report two marginal outliers from this search, but find no clear evidence for such emission either. The resulting duration-dependent strain upper limits do not surpass indirect energy constraints for any of these targets., Comment: 37 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

AR Sco is a binary system that contains a white and red dwarf. The rotation rate of the white dwarf has been observed to slow down, analogous to rotation-powered radio pulsars; it has thus been dubbed a "white dwarf pulsar". We previously fit the traditional radio pulsar rotating vector model to the linearly polarised optical data from this source, constraining the system geometry as well as the white dwarf mass. Using a much more extensive dataset, we now explore the application of the same model to binary phase-resolved optical polarimetric data, thought to be the result of non-thermal synchrotron radiation, and derive the magnetic inclination angle $\alpha$ and the observer angle $\zeta$ at different orbital phases. We obtain a $\sim 10^{\circ}$ variation in $\alpha$ and $\sim 30^{\circ}$ variation in $\zeta$ over the orbital period. The variation patterns in these two parameters is robust, regardless of the binning and epoch of data used. We speculate that the observer is detecting radiation from an asymmetric emission region that is a stable structure over several orbital periods. The success of this simple model lastly implies that the pitch angles of the particles are small and the pulsed, non-thermal emission originates relatively close to the white dwarf surface., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The sky at MeV energies is currently poorly explored. Here we present an innovative mission concept that builds on and improves past and currently proposed missions at such energies. We outline the motivations for combining a coded mask and a Compton telescope and we define the scientific goals of such a mission. The Galactic Explorer with a Coded Aperture Mask Compton Telescope (GECCO) is a novel concept for a next-generation telescope covering hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray energies. The potential and importance of this approach that bridges the observational gap in the MeV energy range are presented. With the unprecedented angular resolution of the coded mask telescope combined with the sensitive Compton telescope, a mission such as GECCO can disentangle the discrete sources from the truly diffuse emission. Individual Galactic and extragalactic sources are detected. This also allows to understand the gamma-ray Galactic center excess and the Fermi Bubbles, and to trace the low-energy cosmic rays, and their propagation in the Galaxy. Nuclear and annihilation lines are spatially and spectrally resolved from the continuum emission and from sources, addressing the role of low-energy cosmic rays in star formation and galaxy evolution, the origin of the 511 keV positron line, fundamental physics, and the chemical enrichment in the Galaxy. Such an instrument also detects explosive transient gamma-ray sources, which enable identifying and studying the astrophysical objects that produce gravitational waves and neutrinos in a multi-messenger context. We present a targeted search for continuous gravitational waves (GWs) from 236 pulsars using data from the third observing run of LIGO and Virgo (O3) combined with data from the second observing run (O2). Searches were for emission from the $l=m=2$ mass quadrupole mode with a frequency at only twice the pulsar rotation frequency (single harmonic) and the $l=2, m=1,2$ modes with a frequency of both once and twice the rotation frequency (dual harmonic). No evidence of GWs was found so we present 95\% credible upper limits on the strain amplitudes $h_0$ for the single harmonic search along with limits on the pulsars' mass quadrupole moments $Q_{22}$ and ellipticities $\varepsilon$. Of the pulsars studied, 23 have strain amplitudes that are lower than the limits calculated from their electromagnetically measured spin-down rates. These pulsars include the millisecond pulsars J0437\textminus4715 and J0711\textminus6830 which have spin-down ratios of 0.87 and 0.57 respectively. For nine pulsars, their spin-down limits have been surpassed for the first time. For the Crab and Vela pulsars our limits are factors of $\sim 100$ and $\sim 20$ more constraining than their spin-down limits, respectively. For the dual harmonic searches, new limits are placed on the strain amplitudes $C_{21}$ and $C_{22}$. For 23 pulsars we also present limits on the emission amplitude assuming dipole radiation as predicted by Brans-Dicke theory., Comment: 37 pages

Recent kinetic simulations sparked a debate regarding the emission mechanism responsible for pulsed GeV $\gamma$-ray emission from pulsars. Some models invoke curvature radiation, while other models assume synchrotron radiation in the current-sheet. We interpret the curved spectrum of the Vela pulsar as seen by H.E.S.S. II (up to $\sim$100 GeV) and the $Fermi$ Large Area Telescope (LAT) to be the result of curvature radiation due to primary particles in the pulsar magnetosphere and current sheet. We present phase-resolved spectra and energy-dependent light curves using an extended slot gap and current sheet model, invoking a step function for the accelerating electric field as motivated by kinetic simulations. We include a refined calculation of the curvature radius of particle trajectories in the lab frame, impacting the particle transport, predicted light curves, and spectra. Our model reproduces the decrease of the flux of the first peak relative to the second one, evolution of the bridge emission, near-constant phase positions of peaks, and narrowing of pulses with increasing energy. We can explain the first of these trends because we find that the curvature radii of the particle trajectories in regions where the second $\gamma$-ray light curve peak originates are systematically larger than those associated with the first peak, implying that the spectral cutoff of the second peak is correspondingly larger. However, an unknown azimuthal dependence of the $E$-field as well as uncertainty in the precise spatial origin of the GeV emission, precludes a simplistic discrimination of emission mechanisms., Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures, accepted by ApJ

Air-Cherenkov telescopes have detected pulsations at energies above 50 GeV from a growing number of Fermi pulsars. These include the Crab, Vela, PSR B1706-44 and Geminga, with the first two having pulsed detections above 1 TeV. In some cases, there appears to be very-high-energy (VHE) emission that is an extension of the Fermi spectra to high energies, while in other cases, additional higher-energy spectral components that require a separate emission mechanism may be present. We present results of broad-band spectral modeling using global magnetosphere fields and multiple emission mechanisms that include synchro-curvature (SC) and inverse Compton scattered (ICS) radiation from accelerated particles (primaries) and synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) emission from lower-energy pairs. Our models predict three distinct VHE components: SC from primaries whose high-energy tail can extend to 100 GeV, SSC from pairs that can extend to several TeV and ICS from primary particles accelerated in the current sheet, scattering pair synchrotron radiation, that appears beyond 10 TeV. Our models suggest that H.E.S.S.-II and MAGIC have detected the high-energy tail of the primary SC component that produces the Fermi spectrum in Vela, Geminga and PSR B1706-44. We argue that the ICS component peaking above 10 TeV from Vela has been seen by H.E.S.S. Detection of this emission component from the Crab and other pulsars is possible with HAWC and CTA, and directly measures the maximum particle energy in pulsars., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

PSR J0218+4232 is one of the most energetic millisecond pulsars known and has long been considered as one of the best candidates for very high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission. Using 11.5 years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data between 100 MeV and 870 GeV, and ~90 hours of MAGIC observations in the 20 GeV to 20 TeV range, we have searched for the highest energy gamma-ray emission from PSR J0218+4232. Based on the analysis of the LAT data, we find evidence for pulsed emission above 25 GeV, but see no evidence for emission above 100 GeV (VHE) with MAGIC. We present the results of searches for gamma-ray emission, along with theoretical modeling, to interpret the lack of VHE emission. We conclude that, based on the experimental observations and theoretical modeling, it will remain extremely challenging to detect VHE emission from PSR J0218+4232 with the current generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs), and maybe even with future ones, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, Accepted to ApJ

Pulsar winds interacting with sources of external pressure are well-established as efficient and prolific TeV accelerators in our Galaxy. Yet, enabled by observations from Fermi-LAT, a growing class of non-accreting pulsars in binaries has emerged and these are likely to become apparent as TeV emitters in the CTA era. This class consists of the black widows and redbacks, binaries in which a millisecond pulsar interacts with its low-mass companion. In such systems, an intrabinary shock can form as a site of particle acceleration and associated nonthermal emission. We motivate why these sources are particularly interesting for understanding pulsar winds. We also describe our new multizone code which models the X-ray and gamma-ray synchrotron and inverse Compton spectral components for select spider binaries, including diffusion, convection, and radiative energy losses in an axially symmetric, steady-state approach. This new multizone code simultaneously yields energy-dependent light curves and orbital-phase-resolved spectra. It also better constrains the multiplicity of electron/positron pairs that have been accelerated up to TeV energies and are necessary to power orbitally-modulated synchrotron emission components between the X-rays and MeV/GeV bands potentially observed in some systems. This affords a more robust prediction of the expected high-energy and VHE gamma-ray flux. Nearby MSPs with hot or flaring companions may be promising targets for CTA, and it is possible that spider binaries could contribute to the observed AMS-02 energetic positron excess., Comment: Presented at the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

We report on Bayesian estimation of the radius, mass, and hot surface regions of the massive millisecond pulsar PSR J0740$+$6620, conditional on pulse-profile modeling of Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer X-ray Timing Instrument (NICER XTI) event data. We condition on informative pulsar mass, distance, and orbital inclination priors derived from the joint NANOGrav and CHIME/Pulsar wideband radio timing measurements of arXiv:2104.00880. We use XMM European Photon Imaging Camera spectroscopic event data to inform our X-ray likelihood function. The prior support of the pulsar radius is truncated at 16 km to ensure coverage of current dense matter models. We assume conservative priors on instrument calibration uncertainty. We constrain the equatorial radius and mass of PSR J0740$+$6620 to be $12.39_{-0.98}^{+1.30}$ km and $2.072_{-0.066}^{+0.067}$ M$_{\odot}$ respectively, each reported as the posterior credible interval bounded by the 16% and 84% quantiles, conditional on surface hot regions that are non-overlapping spherical caps of fully-ionized hydrogen atmosphere with uniform effective temperature; a posteriori, the temperature is $\log_{10}(T$ [K]$)=5.99_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$ for each hot region. All software for the X-ray modeling framework is open-source and all data, model, and sample information is publicly available, including analysis notebooks and model modules in the Python language. We describe the X-ray pulse profile models we use, and how we use them, to analyze Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars to obtain information about the mass-radius relation of neutron stars and the equation of state of the dense matter in their cores. Here we detail our modeling of the observed profile of PSR J0030+0451 that we analyzed in Miller et al. (2019) and Riley et al. (2019) and describe a cross-verification of computations of the pulse profiles of a star with R/M 3, in case stars this compact need to be considered in future analyses. We also present our early cross-verification efforts of the parameter estimation procedures used by Miller et al. (2019) and Riley et al. (2019) by analyzing two distinct synthetic data sets. Both codes yielded credible regions in the mass-radius plane that are statistically consistent with one another and both gave posterior distributions for model parameter values consistent with the values that were used to generate the data. We also summarize the additional tests of the parameter estimation procedure of Miller et al. (2019) that used synthetic pulse profiles and the NICER pulse profile of PSR J0030+0451. We then illustrate how the precision of mass and radius estimates depends on the pulsar's spin rate and the size of its hot spot by analyzing four different synthetic pulse profiles. Giant radio pulses (GRPs) are sporadic bursts emitted by some pulsars, lasting a few microseconds. GRPs are hundreds to thousands of times brighter than regular pulses from these sources. The only GRP-associated emission outside radio wavelengths is from the Crab Pulsar, where optical emission is enhanced by a few percent during GRPs. We observed the Crab Pulsar simultaneously at X-ray and radio wavelengths, finding enhancement of the X-ray emission by $3.8\pm0.7\%$ (a 5.4$\sigma$ detection) coinciding with GRPs. This implies that the total emitted energy from GRPs is tens to hundreds of times higher than previously known. Understanding the physics of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) presents a number of challenges compared to that of the non-recycled pulsar population. Even though their fast rotation rates can produce high spin-down power and accelerating electric fields, their relatively low surface magnetic fields make the production of electron-positron pairs required for radio emission difficult. The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has discovered pulsed W-rays from a large fraction of the MSP population that have light curves surprisingly similar to those of young pulsars. However, their very compact magnetospheres enable magnetic fields at the light cylinder that are comparable to those of the most energetic pulsars. This fact and recent global magnetosphere models showing that particle acceleration takes place near and beyond the light cylinder, now makes the W-rays from MSPs plausible. The large increase in binary systems harboring MSPs has revitalized the study of shock acceleration and high-energy emission in such systems, with many showing orbitally-modulated X-rays. The Virtual Telescope for X-ray Observations (VTXO) will use lightweight Phase Fresnel Lenses (PFLs) in a virtual X-ray telescope with $\sim$1 km focal length and with $\sim$50 milli-arcsecond angular resolution. VTXO is formed by using precision formation flying of two SmallSats: a smaller OpticsSat that houses the PFLs and navigation beacons while a larger DetectorSat contains an X-ray camera, a precision start tracker, and the propulsion for the formation flying. The baseline flight dynamics uses a highly elliptical supersynchronous orbit allow the formation to hold in an inertial frame around the 90,000 km apogee for 10 hours of the 32.5 hour orbit with nearly a year mission lifetime. VTXO's fine angular resolution enables measuring the environments close to the central engines of bright compact X-ray sources. This X-ray imaging capability allows for the study of the effects of dust scattering near to the central objects such as Cyg X-3 and GX 5-1, for the search for jet structure near to the compact object in X-ray novae such as Cyg X-1 and GRS 1915+105, and for the search for structure in the termination shock of in the Crab pulsar wind nebula. Magnetars are the most luminous compact objects in the stellar mass range observed in the Milky Way, with giant flares of hard X-ray power ~10^45 erg/sec being detected from three soft gamma repeaters in the Galactic neighborhood. Periodicity seen in magnetar persistent emission, and a distinctive "spin-down" lengthening of this period, have driven the paradigm that strongly-magnetized neutron stars constitute these fascinating sources. The steady X-ray emission includes both thermal atmospheric components, and magnetospheric contributions that are manifested as hard X-ray "tails." This paper addresses observational and theoretical elements pertinent to the steady hard X-ray emission of magnetars, focusing on dissipative processes in their magnetospheres, and elements of Comptonization and polarization. Black widow and redback systems are compact binaries in which a millisecond pulsar heats and may even ablate its low-mass companion by its intense wind of relativistic particles and radiation. In such systems, an intrabinary shock can form as a site of particle acceleration and associated non-thermal emission. We model the X-ray and gamma-ray synchrotron and inverse-Compton spectral components for select spider binaries, including diffusion, convection and radiative energy losses in an axially-symmetric, steady-state approach. Our new multi-zone code simultaneously yields energy-dependent light curves and orbital phase-resolved spectra. Using parameter studies and matching the observed X-ray spectra and light curves, and Fermi Large Area Telescope spectra where available, with a synchrotron component, we can constrain certain model parameters. For PSR J1723--2837 these are notably the magnetic field and bulk flow speed of plasma moving along the shock tangent, the shock acceleration efficiency, and the multiplicity and spectrum of pairs accelerated by the pulsar. This affords a more robust prediction of the expected high-energy and very-high-energy gamma-ray flux. We find that nearby pulsars with hot or flaring companions may be promising targets for the future Cherenkov Telescope Array. Modeling of the NICER X-ray waveform of the pulsar PSR J0030+0451, aimed to constrain the neutron star mass and radius, has inferred surface hot-spots (the magnetic polar caps) that imply significantly non-dipolar magnetic fields. To this end, we investigate magnetic field configurations that comprise offset dipole plus quadrupole components using static vacuum field and force-free global magnetosphere models. Taking into account the compactness and observer angle values provided by Miller et al. (2019) and Riley et al. (2019), we compute geodesics from the observer plane to the polar caps to compute the resulting X-ray light curve. We explore, through Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques, the detailed magnetic field configurations that can reproduce the observed X-ray light curve and have discovered degeneracies, i.e., diverse field configurations, which can provide sufficient descriptions to the NICER X-ray waveforms. Having obtained the force-free field structures, we then compute the corresponding synchronous gamma-ray light curves following Kalapotharakos et al. (2014) these we compare to those obtained by Fermi-LAT, to provide models consistent with both the X-ray and the gamma-ray data, thereby restricting further the multipole field parameters. An essential aspect of this approach is the proper computation of the relative phase between the synchronous X- and gamma-ray light curves. We report on NICER observations of the Magnetar SGR~1935+2154, covering its 2020 burst storm and long-term persistent emission evolution up to $\sim90$ days post outburst. During the first 1120~seconds taken on April 28 00:40:58 UTC we detect over 217 bursts, corresponding to a burst rate of $>0.2$ bursts s$^{-1}$. Three hours later the rate is at 0.008 bursts s$^{-1}$, remaining at a comparatively low level thereafter. The $T_{90}$ burst duration distribution peaks at 840~ms; the distribution of waiting times to the next burst is fit with a log-normal with an average of 2.1 s. The 1-10 keV burst spectra are well fit by a blackbody, with an average temperature and area of $kT=1.7$ keV and $R^2=53$ km$^2$. The differential burst fluence distribution over $\sim3$ orders of magnitude is well modeled with a power-law form $dN/dF\propto F^{-1.5\pm0.1}$. The source persistent emission pulse profile is double-peaked hours after the burst storm. We find that the bursts peak arrival times follow a uniform distribution in pulse phase, though the fast radio burst associated with the source aligns in phase with the brighter peak. We measure the source spin-down from heavy-cadence observations covering days 21 to 39 post-outburst, $\dot\nu=-3.72(3)\times10^{-12}$ Hz s$^{-1}$; a factor 2.7 larger than the value measured after the 2014 outburst. Finally, the persistent emission flux and blackbody temperature decrease rapidly in the early stages of the outburst, reaching quiescence 40 days later, while the size of the emitting area remains unchanged., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

The Fermi Large Area Telescope gamma-ray source 3FGL J2039.6$-$5618 contains a periodic optical and X-ray source that was predicted to be a "redback" millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary system. However, the conclusive identification required the detection of pulsations from the putative MSP. To better constrain the orbital parameters for a directed search for gamma-ray pulsations, we obtained new optical light curves in 2017 and 2018, which revealed long-term variability from the companion star. The resulting orbital parameter constraints were used to perform a targeted gamma-ray pulsation search using the Einstein@Home distributed volunteer computing system. This search discovered pulsations with a period of 2.65 ms, confirming the source as a binary MSP now known as PSR J2039$-$5617. Optical light curve modelling is complicated, and likely biased, by asymmetric heating on the companion star and long-term variability, but we find an inclination $i > 60{\deg}$, for a low pulsar mass between $1.1 M_{\odot} < M_{\rm psr} < 1.6 M_{\odot}$ and a companion mass of 0.15--0.22 $M_{\odot}$, confirming the redback classification. Timing the gamma-ray pulsations also revealed significant variability in the orbital period, which we find to be consistent with quadrupole moment variations in the companion star, suggestive of convective activity. We also find that the pulsed flux is modulated at the orbital period, potentially due to inverse Compton scattering between high-energy leptons in the pulsar wind and the companion star's optical photon field., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, published in MNRAS

Magnetars are young, magnetically-powered neutron stars possessing the strongest magnetic fields in the Universe. Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are extremely intense millisecond-long radio pulses of primarily extragalactic origin, and a leading attribution for their genesis focuses on magnetars. A hallmark signature of magnetars is their emission of bright, hard X-ray bursts of sub-second duration. On April 27th 2020, the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 emitted hundreds of X-ray bursts in a few hours. One of these temporally coincided with an FRB, the first detection of an FRB from the Milky Way. Here we present spectral and temporal analyses of 24 X-ray bursts emitted 13 hours prior to the FRB and seen simultaneously with the NASA NICER and Fermi/GBM missions in their combined energy range, 0.2 keV-30 MeV. These broadband spectra permit direct comparison with the spectrum of the FRB-associated X-ray burst (FRB-X). We demonstrate that all 24 NICER/GBM bursts are very similar temporally, albeit strikingly different spectrally, from FRB-X. The singularity of the FRB-X burst is perhaps indicative of an uncommon locale for its origin. We report on the timing and spectral properties of the soft X-ray emission from the magnetar 1E 2259+586 from January 2013, $\sim 8$ months after the detection of an anti-glitch, until September 2019, using the Neil Gehrels Swift and NICER observatories. During this time span, we detect two timing discontinuities. The first, occurring around 5 years after the April 2012 anti-glitch, is a relatively large spin-up glitch with a fractional amplitude $\Delta\nu/\nu=1.24(2)\times10^{-6}$. We find no evidence for flux enhancement or change in the spectral or pulse profile shape around the time of this glitch. This is consistent with the picture that a significant number of magnetar spin-up glitches are radiatively-quiet. Approximately 1.5 years later in April 2019, 1E 2259+586 exhibited an anti-glitch with spin-down of a fractional amplitude $\Delta\nu/\nu=-5.8(1)\times10^{-7}$; similar to the fractional change detected in 2012. We do not, however, detect any change to the pulse-profile shape or increase in the rms pulsed flux of the source, nor do we see any possible bursts from its direction around the time of the anti-glitch; all of which occurred during the 2012 event. Hence, similar to spin-up glitches, anti-glitches can occur silently. This may suggest that these phenomena originate in the neutron star interior, and that their locale and triggering mechanism do not necessarily have to be connected to the magnetosphere. During a pointed 2018 NuSTAR observation, we detected a flare with a 2.2 hour duration from the magnetar 1RXS J170849.0$-$400910. The flare, which rose in $\sim25$ seconds to a maximum flux 6 times larger than the persistent emission, is highly pulsed with an rms pulsed fraction of $53\%$. The pulse profile shape consists of two peaks separated by half a rotational cycle, with a peak flux ratio of $\sim$2. The flare spectrum is thermal with an average temperature of 2.1 keV. Phase resolved spectroscopy show that the two peaks possess the same temperature, but differ in size. These observational results along with simple light curve modeling indicate that two identical antipodal spots, likely the magnetic poles, are heated simultaneously at the onset of the flare and for its full duration. Hence, the origin of the flare has to be connected to the global dipolar structure of the magnetar. This might best be achieved externally, via twists to closed magnetospheric dipolar field lines seeding bombardment of polar footpoint locales with energetic pairs. Approximately 1.86 hours following the onset of the flare, a short burst with its own 3-minute thermal tail occurred. The burst tail is also pulsating at the spin period of the source and phase-aligned with the flare profile, implying an intimate connection between the two phenomena. The burst may have been caused by a magnetic reconnection event in the same twisted dipolar field lines anchored to the surface hot spots, with subsequent return currents supplying extra heat to these polar caps., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters
