Search

Peaked-spectrum (PS) sources, known for their distinct peaked radio spectra, represent a type of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). Among these, megahertz-peaked spectrum (MPS) sources, which exhibit a spectral peak at a frequency of a hundred megahertz, have emerged as a potential tool for identifying high-redshift candidates. However, the potential evolutionary link between the fraction of these sources and redshift remains unclear and requires further investigation. The recent, high sensitivity Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) surveys enable statistical studies of these objects to ultra-low frequencies (< 150 MHz). In this study, we first use the multiradio data to investigate the evolution of spectral index with redshift for 1,187 quasars from the SDSS 16th quasar catalog. For each quasar, we analyze available data from the LOFAR Low Band Antenna (LBA) at 54 MHz, High Band Antenna (HBA) at 144 MHz, and the Very Large Array (VLA) the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm (FIRST) at 1.4 GHz. We measure the spectral index ($\alpha^{144}_{54}$ and $\alpha^{1400}_{144}$) and find no significant change in their median values with the redshift. Extended sources have steeper spectral indices than compact sources, which is consistent with previous findings. Based on the spectral indices information, we identify MPS sources using these criteria: $\rm \alpha^{144}_{54} >= 0.1$ and $\rm \alpha^{1400}_{144} < 0$, and analyze their properties. We find that the fraction of MPS sources is constant with the redshift ($0.1-4.8$), bolometric luminosity ($\rm 10^{44}-10^{48} erg/s$), and supermassive black hole mass ($\rm 10^{7}-10^{10.5} M_{\odot}$), which suggests that MPS sources have relatively stable physical conditions or formation mechanisms across various evolutionary stages and environments., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. We present the final 6'' resolution data release of the ELAIS-N1 field from the LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Two-metre Sky Survey Deep Fields project (LoTSS Deep). The 144MHz images are the most sensitive achieved to date at this frequency and were created from 290 TB of data obtained from 505 hrs on-source observations taken over 7.5 years. The data were processed following the strategies developed for previous LoTSS and LoTSS Deep data releases. The resulting images span 24.53 square degrees and, using a refined source detection approach, we identified 154,952 radio sources formed from 182,184 Gaussian components within this area. The maps reach a noise level of 10.7 $\mu$Jy/beam at 6'' resolution where approximately half of the noise is due to source confusion. In about 7.4% of the image our limited dynamic range around bright sources results in a further > 5% increase in the noise. The images have a flux density scale accuracy of about 9% and the standard deviation of offsets between our source positions and those from Pan-STARRS is 0.2'' in RA and Dec for high significance detections. We searched individual epoch images for variable sources, identifying 39 objects with considerable variation. We also searched for circularly polarised sources achieving three detections of previously known emitters (two stars and one pulsar) whilst constraining the typical polarisation fraction plus leakage to be less than 0.045%., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 16 figures, 1 table and 20 pages. Radio galaxies can extend far beyond the stellar component of their originating host galaxies, and their radio emission can consist of multiple discrete components. Furthermore, the apparent source structure will depend on survey sensitivity, resolution and the observing frequency. Associated discrete radio components and their originating host galaxy are typically identified through a visual comparison of radio and mid-infrared survey images. We present the first data release of Radio Galaxy Zoo, an online citizen science project that enlists the help of citizen scientists to cross-match extended radio sources from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters (FIRST) and the Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) surveys, often with complex structure, to host galaxies in 3.6 um infrared images from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Spitzer Space Telescope. This first data release consists of 100,185 classifications for 99,146 radio sources from the FIRST survey and 583 radio sources from the ATLAS survey. We include two tables for each of the FIRST and ATLAS surveys: 1)the identification of all components making up each radio source; and 2) the cross-matched host galaxies. These classifications have an average reliability of 0.83 based on the weighted consensus levels of our citizen scientists. The reliability of the DR1 catalogue has been further demonstrated through several parallel studies which used the pre-release versions of this catalogue to train and prototype machine learning-based classifiers. We studied bent radio sources within X-ray galaxy groups in the COSMOS and XMM-LSS fields, using radio data from the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Explorations data release 1 (MIGHTEE-DR1) at 1.2-1.3 GHz (angular resolutions of 8.9" and 5"; ~ 3.5 and 5.5 uJy/beam). Bent radio active galactic nuclei (AGN) were identified via visual inspection. Our analysis included 19 bent radio AGN in the COSMOS field and 17 in the XMM-LSS field which lie within X-ray galaxy groups (2x10^13 >= M200c/Msun = 3x10^14). We investigated the relationship between their bending angle (BA) - the angle formed by the jets or lobes of two-sided radio sources associated with AGN - and properties of their host galaxies and large-scale environment probed by the X-ray galaxy groups. Our key findings are: a) In the XMM-LSS field, we observed a strong correlation between the linear projected size of the bent AGN, the group halo mass, and the projected distance from the group centre. This trend, consistent with previous studies, was not detected in the COSMOS sample. b) The BA is a function of environmental density, with the type of medium playing a significant role. Additionally, at z <= 0.5 we found a higher number of bent sources (BA <= 160deg) compared to higher redshifts (z ~ 1), by a factor of >1.5. This trend aligns with magnetohydrodynamic simulations, which suggest that denser environments and longer interaction times at lower redshifts contribute to this effect. Comparison with the literature suggests that jet bending in galaxy groups within the redshift range 0.1 < z < 1.2 is primarily driven by ram pressure exerted on the jets, which occurs during quiescent phases of AGN activity. We present a detailed study of the large-scale shock front in Stephan's Quintet, a byproduct of past and ongoing interactions. Using integral-field spectroscopy from the new William Herschel Telescope Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer (WEAVE), recent 144 MHz observations from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), and archival data from the Very Large Array and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we obtain new measurements of key shock properties and determine its impact on the system. Harnessing the WEAVE large integral field unit's (LIFU) field of view (90 $\times$ 78 arcsec$^{2}$), spectral resolution ($R\sim2500$) and continuous wavelength coverage across the optical band, we perform robust emission line modeling and dynamically locate the shock within the multi-phase intergalactic medium (IGM) with higher precision than previously possible. The shocking of the cold gas phase is hypersonic, and comparisons with shock models show that it can readily account for the observed emission line ratios. In contrast, we demonstrate that the shock is relatively weak in the hot plasma visible in X-rays (with Mach number of $\mathcal{M} \sim 2 - 4$), making it inefficient at producing the relativistic particles needed to explain the observed synchrotron emission. Instead, we propose that it has led to an adiabatic compression of the medium, which has increased the radio luminosity ten-fold. Comparison of the Balmer line-derived extinction map with the molecular gas and hot dust observed with JWST suggests that pre-existing dust may have survived the collision, allowing the condensation of H$_{2}$ - a key channel for dissipating the shock energy., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Jets launched by supermassive black holes transport relativistic leptons, magnetic fields, and atomic nuclei from the centres of galaxies to their outskirts and beyond. These outflows embody the most energetic pathway by which galaxies respond to their Cosmic Web environment. Studying black hole feedback is an astrophysical frontier, providing insights on star formation, galaxy cluster stability, and the origin of cosmic rays, magnetism, and heavy elements throughout the Universe. This feedback's cosmological importance is ultimately bounded by the reach of black hole jets, and could be sweeping if jets travel far at early epochs. Here we present the joint LOFAR-uGMRT-Keck discovery of a black hole jet pair extending over $7$ megaparsecs -- the largest galaxy-made structure ever found. The outflow, seen $7.5$ gigayears into the past, spans two-thirds of a typical cosmic void radius, thus penetrating voids at ${\sim}95\%$ probability. This system demonstrates that jets can avoid destruction by magnetohydrodynamical instabilities over cosmological distances, even at epochs when the Universe was 15 to 7 times denser than it is today. Whereas previous record-breaking outflows were powered by radiatively inefficient active galactic nuclei, this outflow is powered by a radiatively efficient active galactic nucleus, a type common at early epochs. If, as implied, a population of early void-penetrating outflows existed, then black hole jets could have overwritten the fields from primordial magnetogenesis. This outflow shows that energy transport from supermassive black holes operates on scales of the Cosmic Web and raises the possibility that cosmic rays and magnetism in the intergalactic medium have a non-local, cross-void origin., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, published in Nature. We characterise the co-evolution of radio-loud AGN and their galaxies by mapping the dependence of radio-loud AGN activity on stellar mass and star-formation rate (SFR) across cosmic time (out to $z \sim 1.5$). Deep LOFAR radio observations are combined with large galaxy samples to study the incidence of radio-loud AGN across the galaxy population; the AGN are further split into low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs) and high-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs). We find that LERG activity occurs over a wide range of SFRs, whereas HERGs are typically found in galaxies with ongoing star formation. The LERGs are then split based on their SFRs relative to the main sequence, across redshift. Within quiescent galaxies, LERG activity shows a steep stellar mass dependence with the same normalisation across the past $\sim$ 10 Gyr; this indicates that hot gas fuels LERGs in quiescent galaxies across cosmic time. In massive galaxies ($\log_{10}(M/\rm{M_{\odot}}) \gtrsim 11$), the incidence of LERGs is roughly constant across the galaxy population, suggesting that LERGs in massive galaxies may be fuelled by hot gas regardless of the star-formation activity. At lower masses, however, LERG activity is significantly more enhanced (by a factor of up to 10) in star-forming galaxies compared to quiescent galaxies; this suggests that an additional fuelling mechanism, likely associated with cold gas, may fuel the LERGs in galaxies with higher SFRs. In this study we report spatially resolved, wideband spectral properties of three giant radio galaxies (GRGs) in the COSMOS field: MGTC J095959.63+024608.6 , MGTC J100016.84+015133.0 and MGTC J100022.85+031520.4. One such galaxy MGTC J100022.85+031520.4 is reported here for the first time with a projected linear size of 1.29 Mpc at a redshift of 0.1034. Unlike the other two, it is associated with a brightest cluster galaxy (BCG), making it one of the few GRGs known to inhabit cluster environments. We examine the spectral age distributions of the three GRGs using new MeerKAT UHF-band (544-1088 MHz) observations, and $L$-band (900-1670 MHz) data from the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey. We test two different models of spectral ageing, the Jaffe-Perola and Tribble models, using the Broadband Radio Astronomy Tools (\textsc{brats}) software which we find agree well with each other. We estimate the Tribble spectral age for MGTC J095959.63+024608.6 as 68 Myr, MGTC J100016.84+015133.0 as 47 Myr and MGTC J100022.85+031520.4 as 67 Myr. We find significant disagreements between these spectral age estimates and the estimates of the dynamical ages of these GRGs, modelled in cluster and group environments. The appearance of the jets and lobes of some radio galaxies makes it difficult to assign them to a known class of objects. This is often due to the activity of the central engine and/or interactions with the environment, as well as projection effects. We analyse the radio data for an apparently asymmetric radio source 4C70.19, which is associated with the giant elliptical galaxy NGC6048. The source shows distorted radio jets and lobes, one of which bends by 180 degrees. The aim of our study is to explain the nature of the observed distortions. We used LOFAR, Effelsberg, and VLA radio data in a wide range of frequencies. At high frequencies, we also used radio polarimetry to study the properties of the magnetic fields. Additionally, we made use of optical, infra-red, and X-ray data. Polarisation data suggest shearing of the magnetic fields at points where the jets bend. The low-frequency LOFAR map at 145 MHz, as well as the sensitive single-dish Effelsberg map at 8.35 GHz, reveal previously undetected diffuse emission around the source. The rotation measure (RM) derived from the polarimetric data allowed us to estimate the density of the medium surrounding the source, which agrees with typical densities of the intergalactic medium or the outer parts of insterstellar halos. We propose that the southern jet is bent in the same manner as the northern one, but that it is inclined to the sky plane. Both these bends are likely caused by the orbital motion within the galaxy group, as well as interactions with the intergalactic medium. Our analyses suggest that, despite its complex morphology, 4C70.19 seems to be intrinsically symmetric with a physical extent of up to 600 kpc, and that the diffuse emission detected in our high-sensitivity maps is related to radio plumes that are expanding behind the source., Comment: 17 pages, 20 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics, in press

(abridged) Characterizing duty cycles of recurrent phases of dormancy and activity in supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei is crucial in understanding impact of energy released on host galaxies and their evolution. However, identifying sources in quiescent and restarted phases is challenging. Our goal is to identify and characterize a substantial sample of radio galaxies in restarted phase and explore core prominence as a signature of this activity. We expand our prior study from a $30\,\mathrm{deg^2}$ area in Lockman Hole to a larger $424\,\mathrm{deg^2}$ region in Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) field using visually selected core-dominated radio galaxies. We used 144 MHz LOFAR survey images to identify galaxies with restarting jets. By applying selection criteria, including radio core dominance, low surface brightness extended emission, spectral index properties, and morphology, we found 69 candidate restarted radio galaxies. These candidates show diverse intrinsic morphology, spanning FRI, FRII, core-with-halo, and asymmetric forms, suggesting different progenitors. Among these, nine galaxies exhibit ultra-steep spectrum extended emission combined with high radio core prominence, representing previous and current epochs of jet activity. This subset supports a model where the switch-on and switch-off mechanism occurs with fast duty cycle. The restarted candidates span radio luminosities from log$_{10}$(L$_\mathrm{144 MHz}$/$\mathrm{WHz^{-1}}$) = 23.24 to 26.80, with sizes between 88 and 1659 kpc, including 16 giant radio galaxies. Their total stellar content aligns with massive elliptical galaxies. Our findings at $z<0.4$ suggest that many restarting galaxies are not found in rich cluster environments, consistent with broader radio-galaxy population. We present an analysis of 152,355 radio sources identified in the second data release of the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS-DR2) with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic redshifts in the range 0.00 < z < 0.57. Using Monte Carlo simulations we determine the reliability of each source exhibiting an excess in radio luminosity relative to that predicted from their Ha emission, and, for a subset of 124,023 sources we combine this measurement with a full BPT analysis. Using these two independent diagnostics we determine the reliability of each source hosting a supermassive black hole of high or low Eddington-scaled accretion rate, and combine the measurements to determine the reliability of sources belonging to each of four physical classes of objects: star forming galaxies (SFGs), radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (RQAGN), and high- or low-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs or emission-line LERGs). The result is a catalogue which enables user-defined samples of radio sources with a reliability threshold suited to their science goal e.g. prioritising purity or completeness. Here we select high-confidence samples of radio sources (>90% reliability) to report: 38,588 radio-excess AGN in the LoTSS DR2 sample (362 HERGs, and 12,648 emission-line LERGs), together with 38,729 SFGs, and 18,726 RQAGN. We validate these results through comparison to literature using independent emission-line measurements, and to widely-adopted WISE photometric selection techniques. While our use of SDSS spectroscopy limits our current analysis to ~4 percent of the LoTSS-DR2 catalogue, our method is directly applicable to data from the forthcoming WEAVE-LOFAR survey which will obtain over a million spectra of 144 MHz selected sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

'Bare' active galactic nuclei (AGN) are a subclass of Type 1 AGN that show little or no intrinsic absorption. They offer an unobscured view of the central regions of the AGN and therefore serve as ideal targets to study the relativistic reflection features originating from the innermost regions of the accretion disc. We present a detailed broadband spectral analysis ($0.3 - 70$ keV) of one of the most luminous bare AGN in the local universe, RBS 1124 ($z= 0.208$) using a new, co-ordinated high signal-to-noise observation obtained by $\textit{XMM-Newton}$ and $\textit{NuSTAR}$. The source exhibits a power-law continuum with $\Gamma \sim$ 1.8 along with a soft excess below 2 keV, a weak neutral iron line and curvature at high energies ($\sim 30$ keV). The broadband spectrum, including the soft excess and the high-energy continuum, is well fit by the relativistic reflection model when the accretion disc is allowed to have densities of log$(n_{\rm e}$/cm$^{-3}$) $\gtrsim 19.2$. Our analysis therefore suggests that when high-density effects are considered, relativistic reflection remains a viable explanation for the soft excess., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In spite of their key role in galaxy evolution and several decades of observational efforts, the census of supernova remnants (SNRs) in our Galaxy remains incomplete. Theoretical predictions based on the local supernova rate estimate the expected number of SNRs in the Galaxy to be $\gtrsim$ 1000. By contrast, the number of detected SNRs amounts to about 300. High-resolution, wide-area radio surveys at low frequencies are ideal tools with which to find missing SNRs, given the prominence of these sources at low radio frequencies. We aim to find missing SNRs using proprietary data from the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) at 144~MHz. We used LoTSS total intensity maps of two Galactic regions, one with $39^\mathrm{o} < l < 66^\mathrm{o}$ and $|b|< 2.5^\mathrm{o}$, and the other with $145^\mathrm{o} < l < 150^\mathrm{o}$ and $|b| < 3^\mathrm{o}$, in addition to mid-infrared (MIR) data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) all-sky survey to search for SNR candidates. We report the discovery of 14 new SNR candidates selected on the basis of their morphology at 144 MHz and a lack of MIR emission. We also follow up on 24 previously reported SNR candidates, inferring their spectral index between the LoTSS frequency (144 MHz) and the frequency at which they were reported. The high resolution and sensitivity of LoTSS observations has resulted in the detection of 14 new SNR candidates. From the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey second data release (LoTSS DR2) at 144 MHz, we identified a peculiar radio galaxy, J0011+3217. It has a large, one-sided diffuse secondary wing that stretches up to 0.85 Mpc (roughly 85\% of the size of the primary lobe). The linear size of the primary lobe of the galaxy is 0.99 Mpc. This peculiar source is a giant radio galaxy with a misaligned primary lobe. There is an optical galaxy 16 kpc (7 arcsec) from the host active galactic nucleus of J0011+3217. J0011+3217 has a radio luminosity of $1.65\times 10^{26}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ at 144 MHz with a spectral index of $-0.80$ between 144 and 607 MHz. J0011+3217 is located 1.2 Mpc from the centre of the Abell 7 cluster. The Abell 7 cluster has a redshift of 0.104 and a mass ($M_{500}$) of 3.71 $\times 10^{14}$ M$_\odot$. The cluster is associated with strong X-ray emission. We studied the X-ray emission around the cluster and from the region surrounding J0011+3217 using an XMM-Newton image of J0011+3217, and we analysed the velocity structure and spatial distribution of galaxies in the cluster, showing that J0011+3217 inhabits an offset group of galaxies that are moving with respect to Abell 7. The off-axis distortion, or bending, of the primary lobe of J0011+3217 in the outer edges has a strong effect on the relative motion of the surrounding medium; this in turn causes the bending of the jets in the opposite direction of the cluster (like wide-angle tailed sources). We suggest that the morphology of J0011+3217 is influenced by ram pressure created by the Abell 7 cluster, highlighting the complex interactions between the source and the surrounding cluster environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

In this work, we present a new mosaic created with the second release of LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey data (LoTSS-DR2), which probes polarised synchrotron emission in the high-latitude inner Galaxy. Our objective is to characterise the observed emission through multi-tracer analysis to better understand the volume and the structures that may be observed with LOFAR. Furthermore, we exploit Faraday depth as a unique tool to probe the diffuse magnetised structure in the local ISM. We produced a mosaic Faraday cube of LoTSS-DR2 data by applying a rotation measure synthesis algorithm. From the cube, we constructed Faraday moment maps to characterise the nature of spectra. Additionally, we quantified the linear depolarisation canals using the Rolling Hough transform and used them to search for alignment with other data sets. Utilising LoTSS-DR2 observations alongside complementary data sets including Planck polarisation data, HI emission maps, and starlight polarisation measurements, we estimated the distance to the Faraday structures. The Faraday cube reveals an ordered structure across two-thirds of the observed area, whose orientation aligns well with that of both the HI filaments and the magnetic field. We estimate the minimum distance to the Faraday structures to be between 40 and 80 pc, which puts them in the vicinity of the Local Bubble wall. The emission is organised in a large gradient in Faraday depth whose origin we associate with the curved wall of the Local Bubble. Comparing our data with a model of the Local Bubble wall, we conclude that we might be probing a contribution of the medium inside the Local Bubble cavity as well, corresponding to the complex of local interstellar clouds. Moreover, we propose a toy model incorporating an ionised front of finite thickness into the Local Bubble wall, as a curved, cold neutral shell alone is insufficient to produce the observed gradient., Comment: 16 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Polyhazard models are a class of flexible parametric models for modelling survival over extended time horizons. Their additive hazard structure allows for flexible, non-proportional hazards whose characteristics can change over time while retaining a parametric form, which allows for survival to be extrapolated beyond the observation period of a study. Significant user input is required, however, in selecting the number of latent hazards to model, their distributions and the choice of which variables to associate with each hazard. The resulting set of models is too large to explore manually, limiting their practical usefulness. Motivated by applications to stroke survivor and kidney transplant patient survival times we extend the standard polyhazard model through a prior structure allowing for joint inference of parameters and structural quantities, and develop a sampling scheme that utilises state-of-the-art Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes to sample from the resulting transdimensional posterior with minimal user tuning., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

A fraction of galaxy clusters harbor diffuse radio sources known as radio halos. The currently adopted scenario for their formation is based on second-order Fermi re-acceleration of seed electrons that is driven by merger-driven turbulence in the intra-cluster medium. This mechanism is expected to be inefficient, which implies that a significant fraction of halos should have very steep ($\alpha < -1.5$) energy spectra. We start investigating the potential and current limitations of the combination of the two surveys conducted by LOFAR, LoTSS (144 MHz) and LoLSS (54 MHz), to probe the origin of radio halos. We follow up the 20 radio halos detected in the DR1 of LoTSS, which covers the HETDEX field, with the LoLSS survey, and we study their spectral properties between 54 and 144 MHz. After the removal of compact sources, 9 halos were excluded due to unreliable halo flux density measurements at 54 MHz. Our main finding is that 7 out of 11 ($\sim$ 64%) exhibit an ultra-steep spectrum ($\alpha < -1.5$), which is a key prediction of turbulent re-acceleration models. We also note a tentative trend for more massive systems to host flatter halos, although the currently poor statistics does not allow for a deeper analysis. Our sample suffers from low angular resolution at 54 MHz, which limits the accuracy of the compact-sources subtraction. Nevertheless, this study is the first step towards providing compelling evidence for the existence of a large fraction of radio halos with very steep spectrum, which is a fundamental prediction of turbulent re-acceleration models. Modern high-sensitivity radio telescopes are discovering an increased number of resolved sources with intricate radio structures and fainter radio emissions. These sources often present a challenge because source detectors might identify them as separate radio sources rather than components belonging to the same physically connected radio source. Currently, there are no reliable automatic methods to determine which radio components are single radio sources or part of multi-component sources. We propose a deep learning classifier to identify those sources that are part of a multi-component system and require component association on data from the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). We combine different types of input data using multi-modal deep learning to extract spatial and local information about the radio source components: a convolutional neural network component that processes radio images is combined with a neural network component that uses parameters measured from the radio sources and their nearest neighbours. Our model retrieves 94 per cent of the sources with multiple components on a balanced test set with 2,683 sources and achieves almost 97 per cent accuracy in the real imbalanced data (323,103 sources). The approach holds potential for integration into pipelines for automatic radio component association and cross-identification. Spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting has been extensively used to determine the nature of the faint radio source population. Recent efforts have combined fits from multiple SED-fitting codes to account for the host galaxy and any active nucleus that may be present. We show that it is possible to produce similar-quality classifications using a single energy-balance SED fitting code, Prospector, to model up to 26 bands of UV$-$far-infrared aperture-matched photometry for $\sim$31,000 sources in the ELAIS-N1 field from the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) Deep fields first data release. One of a new generation of SED-fitting codes, Prospector accounts for potential contributions from radiative active galactic nuclei (AGN) when estimating galaxy properties, including star formation rates (SFRs) derived using non-parametric star formation histories. Combining this information with radio luminosities, we classify 92 per cent of the radio sources as a star-forming galaxy, high/low-excitation radio galaxy, or radio-quiet AGN and study the population demographics as a function of 150 MHz flux density, luminosity, SFR, stellar mass, redshift and apparent $r$-band magnitude. Finally, we use Prospector SED fits to investigate the SFR$-$150 MHz luminosity relation for a sample of $\sim$$133,000~3.6~\mu$m-selected $z<1$ sources, finding that the stellar mass dependence is significantly weaker than previously reported, and may disappear altogether at $\log_{10} (\mathrm{SFR}/M_\odot~\mathrm{yr}^{-1}) > 0.5$. Large-scale sky surveys at low frequencies, like the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), allow for the detection and characterisation of unprecedented numbers of giant radio galaxies (GRGs, or 'giants'). In this work, by automating the creation of radio--optical catalogues, we aim to significantly expand the census of known giants. We then combine this sample with a forward model to constrain GRG properties of cosmological interest. In particular, we automate radio source component association through machine learning and optical host identification for resolved radio sources. We create a radio--optical catalogue for the full LoTSS Data Release 2 (DR2) and select all possible giants. We combine our candidates with an existing catalogue of LoTSS DR2 crowd-sourced GRG candidates and visually confirm or reject them. To infer intrinsic GRG properties from GRG observations, we develop further a population-based forward model that takes into account selection effects and constrain its parameters using Bayesian inference. We confirm 5,647 previously unknown giants from the crowd-sourced catalogue and 2,597 previously unknown giants from the ML-driven catalogue. Our confirmations and discoveries bring the total number of known giants to at least 11,585. We predict a comoving GRG number density $n_\mathrm{GRG} = 13 \pm 10\ (100\ \mathrm{Mpc})^{-3}$, close to a recent estimate of the number density of luminous non-giant radio galaxies. We derive a current-day GRG lobe volume-filling fraction $V_\mathrm{GRG-CW}(z = 0) = 1.4 \pm 1.1 \cdot 10^{-5}$ in clusters and filaments of the Cosmic Web. Our analysis suggests that giants are more common than previously thought. Giant radio galaxies (GRGs, giant RGs, or giants) are megaparsec-scale, jet-driven outflows from accretion disks of supermassive black holes, and represent the most extreme pathway by which galaxies can impact the Cosmic Web around them. A long-standing but unresolved question is why giants are so much larger than other radio galaxies. It has been proposed that, in addition to having higher jet powers than most RGs, giants might live in especially low-density Cosmic Web environments. In this work, we aim to test this hypothesis by pinpointing Local Universe giants and other RGs in physically principled, Bayesian large-scale structure reconstructions. More specifically, we localised a LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) DR2-dominated sample of luminous ($l_\nu(\nu = 150\ \mathrm{MHz}) \geq 10^{24}\ \mathrm{W\ Hz^{-1}}$) giants and a control sample of LoTSS DR1 RGs, both with spectroscopic redshifts up to $z_\mathrm{max} = 0.16$, in the BORG SDSS Cosmic Web reconstructions. We measured the Cosmic Web density for each RG; for the control sample, we then quantified the relation between RG radio luminosity and Cosmic Web density. With the BORG SDSS tidal tensor, we also measured for each RG whether the gravitational dynamics of its Cosmic Web environment resemble those of clusters, filaments, sheets, or voids. Luminous giants populate large-scale environments that tend to be denser than those of general RGs. This shows that -- at least at high jet powers -- low-density environments are no prerequisite for giant growth. This result is corroborated by gravitational dynamics classification and a cluster catalogue crossmatching analysis. This work presents more than a thousand inferred megaparsec-scale densities around radio galaxies. We investigate the nature of low-luminosity radio-loud active galactic nuclei (RLAGN) selected from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) first data release (DR1). Using optical, mid-infrared, and radio data, we have conservatively selected 55 radiative AGN candidates from DR1 within the redshift range $0.03$$1-3$ kpc, 42 are compact at the limiting resolution of 0.35 arcsec (taking an upper limit on the projected physical size, this corresponds to less than 1 kpc), and three are undetected. The extended objects display a wide range of radio morphologies: two-jet (5), one-jet (4), and double-lobed (1). We present the radio spectra of all detected radio sources which range from steep to flat/inverted and span the range seen for other compact radio sources such as compact symmetric objects (CSOs), compact steep spectrum (CSS) sources, and gigahertz peaked-spectrum (GPS) sources. Assuming synchrotron self-absorption (SSA) for flat/inverted radio spectrum sources, we predict small physical sizes for compact objects to range between $2-53$ pc. Alternatively, using free-free absorption (FFA) models, we have estimated the free electron column depth for all compact objects, assuming a homogeneous absorber. We find that these objects do not occupy a special position on the power/linear size ($P-D$) diagram but some share a region with radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) and so-called `FR0' sources in terms of radio luminosity and linear size., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomy Society (MNRAS) journal

Radio jets are present in a diverse sample of AGN. However, the mechanisms of jet powering are not fully understood, and it is yet unclear to what extent they obey mass-invariant scaling relations, similar to those found for the triggering and fuelling of X-ray selected AGN. We study the incidence of eROSITA/eFEDS X-ray and LOFAR radio AGN as a function of several stellar mass normalised AGN power indicators. A new sample of radio AGN from the LOFAR-eFEDS survey is defined and we publicly release this catalogue, including host galaxy counterparts from the Legacy Survey DR9, LOFAR radio morphologies and host galaxy properties from the complete, spectroscopic (z<0.4) GAMA09 survey. The fraction of GAMA09 galaxies hosting radio, X-ray and both radio and X-ray AGN are calculated as a function of the specific black hole kinetic ($\lambda_{\rm Jet}$) and radiative ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$) power. The incidence of eFEDS X-ray AGN as a function of $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ shows the same mass-invariance as found in past studies. Meanwhile, radio AGN, regardless of their morphology, are more likely to be hosted in more massive galaxies, at all $\lambda_{\rm Jet}$. Across the stellar mass range, the compact radio AGN incidence follows the same power-law distribution, showing that it is not only high mass galaxies that host high power radio AGN and vice versa. On the other hand, the incidence of compact and complex radio AGN is boosted at the highest jet powers, diverging from a simple power-law. Interestingly, this increased incidence cannot be explained by more powerful radio AGN lying in more dense environments which could naturally boost their radio luminosity. Overall, we show that statistical incidence studies are a powerful method to probe disk-jet coupling for different AGN accretion modes, although future work on a more reliable determination of jet power for diverse samples of radio AGN is needed., Comment: 30 pages, 32 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a comprehensive study of the physical origin of radio emission in optical quasars at redshifts z < 2.5. We focus particularly on the associations between compact radio emission, dust reddening, and outflows identified in our earlier work. Leveraging the deepest low-frequency radio data available to date (LoTSS Deep DR1), we achieve radio detection fractions of up to 94%, demonstrating the virtual ubiquity of radio emission in quasars, and a continuous distribution in radio loudness. Through our analysis of radio properties, combined with spectral energy distribution modeling of multiwavelength photometry, we establish that the primary source of radio emission in quasars is the AGN, rather than star formation. Modeling the dust reddening of the accretion disk emission shows a continuous increase in radio detection in quasars as a function of the reddening parameter E(B-V), suggesting a causal link between radio emission and dust reddening. Confirming previous findings, we observe that the radio excess in red quasars is most pronounced for sources with compact radio morphologies and intermediate radio loudness. We find a significant increase in [Oiii] and Civ outflow velocities for red quasars not seen in our control sample, with particularly powerful [Oiii] winds in those around the radio-quiet/radio-loud threshold. Based on the combined characterisation of radio, reddening, and wind properties in our sample, we favor a model in which the compact radio emission observed in quasars originates in compact radio jets and their interaction with a dusty, circumnuclear environment. Our results align with the theory that jet-induced winds and shocks resulting from this interaction are the origin of the enhanced radio emission in red quasars. We present the first deep (72 hours of observations) radio image of the Euclid Deep Field North (EDFN) obtained with the LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) High Band Antenna (HBA) at 144 MHz. The EDFN is the latest addition to the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) Deep Fields and these observations represent the first data release for this field. The observations produced a 6" resolution image with a central r.m.s. noise of $32\,\mu$Jy\,beam$^{-1}$. A catalogue of $\sim 23,000$ radio sources above a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold of 5 is extracted from the inner circular 10 deg$^2$ region. We discuss the data analysis and we provide a detailed description of how we derived the catalogue of radio sources and on the issues related to direction-dependent calibration and their effects on the final products. Finally, we derive the radio source counts at 144 MHz in the EDFN using catalogues of mock radio sources to derive the completeness correction factors. The source counts in the EDFN are consistent with those obtained from the first data release of the other LoTSS Deep Fields (ELAIS-N1, Lockman Hole and Bootes), despite the different method adopted to construct the final catalogue and to assess its completeness., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We present relativistic magnetohydrodynamic modelling of jets running into hydrostatic, spherically symmetric cluster atmospheres. For the first time in a numerical simulation, we present model cluster atmospheres based upon the Universal Pressure Profile (UPP), incorporating a temperature profile for a typical self-similar atmosphere described by only one parameter - $M_{500}$. We explore a comprehensive range of realistic atmospheres and jet powers and derive dynamic, energetic and polarimetric data which provide insight into what we should expect of future high-resolution studies of AGN outflows. From the simulated synchrotron emission maps which include Doppler beaming we find sidedness distributions that agree well with observations. We replicated a number of findings from our previous work, such as higher power jets inflating larger aspect-ratio lobes and the cluster environment impacting the distribution of energy between the lobe and shocked regions. Comparing UPP and $\beta$-profiles we find that the cluster model chosen results in a different morphology for the resultant lobes with the UPP more able to clear lobe material from the core; and that these different atmospheres influence the ratio between the various forms of energy in the fully developed lobes. This work also highlights the key role played by Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities in the formation of realistic lobe aspect-ratios. Our simulations point to the need for additional lobe-widening mechanisms at high jet powers, for example jet precession. The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) is a community-driven standard for the organization of data and metadata from a growing range of neuroscience modalities. This paper is meant as a history of how the standard has developed and grown over time. We outline the principles behind the project, the mechanisms by which it has been extended, and some of the challenges being addressed as it evolves. We also discuss the lessons learned through the project, with the aim of enabling researchers in other domains to learn from the success of BIDS.

We present the low-frequency radio spectra of 9 high-redshift quasars at $5.6 \leq z \leq 6.6$ using the Giant Metre Radio Telescope band-3, -4, and -5 observations ($\sim$300-1200 MHz), archival Low Frequency Array (LOFAR; 144 MHz), and Very Large Array (VLA; 1.4 and 3 GHz) data. Five of the quasars in our sample have been discovered recently, representing some of the highest redshift radio bright quasars known at low-frequencies. We model their radio spectra to study their radio emission mechanism and age of the radio jets by constraining the spectral turnover caused by synchrotron self-absorption (SSA) or free-free absorption (FFA). Besides J0309+2717, a blazar at $z=6.1$, our quasars show no sign of a spectral flattening between 144 MHz and a few GHz, indicating there is no strong SSA or FFA absorption in the observed frequency range. However, we find a wide range of spectral indices between $-1.6$ and $0.05$, including the discovery of 3 potential ultra-steep spectrum quasars. Using further archival VLBA data, we confirm that the radio SED of the blazar J0309+2717 likely turns over at a rest-frame frequency of 0.6-2.3 GHz (90-330 MHz observed frame), with a high-frequency break indicative of radiative ageing of the electron population in the radio lobes. Ultra-low frequency data below 50 MHz are necessary to constrain the absorption mechanism for J0309+2717 and the turnover frequencies for the other high-$z$ quasars in our sample. A relation between linear radio jet size and turnover frequency has been established at low redshifts. If this relation were to hold at high redshifts, the limits on the turnover frequency of our sample suggest the radio jet sizes must be more extended than the typical sizes observed in other radio-bright quasars at similar redshift. We report on the serendipitous discovery of an unprecedented interaction between the radio lobe of a radio galaxy and a spiral galaxy. The discovery was made thanks to LOFAR observations at 144 MHz of the galaxy cluster Abell 160 ($z=0.04317$) provided by the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey. The new low-frequency observations revealed that one of the radio plumes of the central galaxy GIN 049 overlaps with the spiral galaxy JO36. Previous studies carried out with MUSE revealed that the warm ionized gas in the disk of JO36, traced by the H$\alpha$ emission, is severely truncated with respect to the stellar disk. We further explore this unique system by including new uGMRT observations at 675 MHz to map the spectral index. The emerging scenario is that JO36 has interacted with the radio plume in the past 200-500 Myr. The encounter resulted in a positive feedback event for JO36 in the form of a star formation rate burst of $\sim14$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. In turn, the galaxy passage left a trace in the radio-old plasma by re-shaping the old relativistic plasma via magnetic draping., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. We present the serendipitous discovery of 8 distant ($>$ 50 pc) late M dwarfs with plausible associated radio emission at 144 MHz. The M dwarf nature of our sources has been confirmed with optical spectroscopy performed using HET/LRS2 and Subaru/FOCAS, and their radio flux densities are within the range of 0.5-1.0 mJy at 144 MHz. Considering the radio-optical source separation and source densities of the parent catalogues, we suggest that it is statistically probable the M dwarfs are associated with the radio emission. However, it remains plausible that for some of the sources the radio emission originates from an optically faint and red galaxy hiding behind the M dwarf. The isotropic radio luminosities ($\sim10^{17-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$) of the M dwarfs suggest that if the association is real, the radio emission is likely driven by a coherent emission process produced via plasma or electron-cyclotron maser instability processes, which is potentially caused by binary interaction. Long term monitoring in the radio and high-resolution radio follow-up observations are necessary to search for any variability and pinpoint the radio emission to determine whether our tentative conclusion that these ultracool dwarfs are radio emitting is correct. If the low-frequency radio emission is conclusively associated with the M dwarfs, this would reveal a new population of optically faint and distant ($>$ 50 pc) radio emitting M dwarfs., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A
