Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The reduced transition probabilities $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+,2^+_2)$ in $^{70}$Zn and the full $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2^+)$ strength up to S$_n$=7.79 MeV in $^{68}$Ni have been determined at the LISE/GANIL facility using the Coulomb-excitation technique at intermediate beam energy on a $^{208}$Pb target. The $\gamma$ rays emitted in-flight were detected with an array of 46 BaF$_2$ crystals. The angles of the deflected nuclei were determined in order to disentangle and extract the Coulomb and nuclear contributions to the excitation of the 2$^+$ states. The measured $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+)$ of 1432(124) e$^2$fm$^4$ for $^{70}$Zn falls in the lower part of the published values which clustered either around 1600 or above 2000 e$^2$fm$^4$, while the $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2^+_2)$ of 53(7) e$^2$fm$^4$ agrees very well with the two published values. The relatively low $B(E2; 0^+_{g.s.}\rightarrow2_1^+)$ of 301(38) e$^2$fm$^4$ for $^{68}$Ni agrees with previous studies and confirms a local magicity at $Z=28, N=40$. Combining the results of the low-energy spectra of $^{68}$Ni and $^{70}$Zn and their shell-model interpretations, it is interesting to notice that four different shapes (spherical, oblate, prolate and triaxial) are present. Finally, a summed $E2$ strength of only about 150 e$^2$fm$^4$ has been found experimentally at high excitation energy, likely due to proton excitations across the $Z=28$ gap. The experimental distribution of this high-energy $E2$ excitation agrees with SM calculations, but its strength is about two times weaker.

Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The low-spin structure of the semimagic 64Ni nucleus has been considerably expanded: combining four experiments, several 0+ and 2+ excited states were identified below 4.5 MeV, and their properties established. The Monte Carlo shell model accounts for the results and unveils an unexpectedly complex landscape of coexisting shapes: a prolate 0+ excitation is located at a surprisingly high energy (3463 keV), with a collective 2+ state 286 keV above it, the first such observation in Ni isotopes. The evolution in excitation energy of the prolate minimum across the neutron N = 40 subshell gap highlights the impact of the monopole interaction and its variation in strength with N.

- Abstract
Background: The nature of asymmetric fission of preactinides is not yet understood in detail, despite intense experimental and theoretical studies carried out at present. Purpose: The study of asymmetric and symmetric fission of Hg180,182,183 and Pt178 nuclei as a function of their excitation energy and isospin. Methods: Mass-energy distributions of fission fragments of Hg180, Pt178 (two protons less than Hg180), and Hg182 (two neutrons more than Hg180) formed in the Ar36+Sm144, Nd142, and Ca40+Nd142 reactions were measured at energies near and above the Coulomb barrier. Fission of Hg183 obtained in the reaction of Ca40 with Nd143 was also investigated to see if one extra neutron could lead to dramatic changes in the fission process due to the shape-staggering effect in radii, known in Hg183. The measurements were performed with the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET. Results: The observed peculiarities in the fission fragment mass-energy distributions for all studied nuclei may be explained by the presence of a symmetric fission mode and three asymmetric fission modes, manifested by the different total kinetic energies and fragment mass splits. The yield of symmetric mode grows with increasing excitation energy of compound nucleus. Conclusions: The investigated properties of asymmetric fission of Hg180,182,183 and Pt178 nuclei point out the existence of well-deformed proton shell at Z≈36 and a less deformed proton shell at Z ≈ 46.

- Abstract
Background: Observation of asymmetric fission of Hg180 has led to intensive theoretical and experimental studies of fission of neutron-deficient nuclei in the lead region. Purpose: The study of asymmetric and symmetric fission modes of Hg180,190 and Pb184,192,202 nuclei. Methods: Mass-energy distributions of fission fragments of Hg180,190 and Pb184 formed in the Ar36+Sm144,154 and Ca40+Sm144 reactions, respectively, at energies near the Coulomb barrier have been measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET and compared with previously measured Pb192,202 isotopes produced in the Ca48+Sm144,154 reactions. The mass distributions for Hg180,190 and Pb184,192,202 together with old data for Ir187, Au195, Hg198, Tl201, Bi205,207, Po210, and At213 [J. Nucl. Phys. 53, 1225 (1991)] have been decomposed into symmetric and asymmetric fission modes. The total kinetic-energy distributions for different fission fragment mass regions have been analyzed for Hg180,190 and Pb184. Results: The stabilization role of proton numbers at Z≈36, 38, Z≈45, 46, and Z=28/50 in asymmetric fission of excited preactinide nuclei has been observed. The high (≈145-MeV) and the low (≈128-MeV) energy components have been found in the total kinetic-energy distributions of Hg180,190 fission fragments corresponding to the fragments with proton numbers near Z≈46 and Z≈36, respectively. In the case of fission of Pb184 only the low-energy component (≈135MeV) for the fragments with masses corresponding to the proton numbers Z≈36 and 46 has been found. Conclusions: The studied properties of asymmetric fission of Hg180,190 and Pb184,192,202 nuclei point out the existence of well deformed proton shell at Z≈36 and less deformed proton shell at Z≈46.

- Abstract
The overlap in the mass symmetric region of the reaction products from fusion-fission and quasifission complicates the assignment of symmetric events to complete fusion on the basis of the mass distribution alone. Additional observables, besides mass distribution, should be used. The approach proposed here relies on the fact that fusion-fission and quasifission are characterized by different timescales. Within this framework, we performed a detailed study to find out how timescales can be probed via angular momentum transfer as measured via γ-ray multiplicities. The proof of principle was carried out by measuring the γ rays in coincidence with fusion-fission and quasielastic binary fragments in the reaction S32 + Au197 at beam energy near the Coulomb barrier. The experiment was performed at the Accélérateur Linéaire Tandem à Orsay (ALTO) facility at the Institut De Physique Nucléaire (IPN) in Orsay (France) using a detection setup consisting of ORGAM (ORsay GAMma) and PARIS (Photon Array Radioactive Ion Stable beams) γ-detectors arrays coupled with the CORSET (CORrelation SETup) time-of-flight spectrometer. Results of the sensitivity of this method to distinguish reaction channels with different dynamics are discussed.

- Abstract
Background: The formation of superheavy nuclei in fusion reactions is suppressed by a competing quasifission process. The competition between the formation of the compound nucleus and the quasifission depends strongly on the reaction entrance channel. Purpose: The investigation of fission and quasifission processes in the formation of Z=120 superheavy composite systems in the 52,54Cr+248Cm and 68Zn+232Th reactions, and their comparison with the 64Ni+238U reaction at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier. Methods: Mass-energy distributions of fissionlike fragments formed in the reactions 52,54Cr+248Cm and 68Zn+232Th at energies near the Coulomb barrier were measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET. Results: Capture cross sections for the reactions under investigation were measured. The most probable fragment masses and total kinetic energies as well as their variances in dependence on the interaction energy were studied for asymmetric and symmetric fragments. The fusion probabilities were estimated from the analysis of mass-energy distributions. Conclusions: The estimated fusion probability drops down by a factor of 103 in the 54Cr+248Cm reaction compared to the reactions of 48Ca ions with actinides. Among the studied reactions, the 54Cr+248Cm is the most favorable one for the production of the superheavy element with Z=120.

Among the studied reactions, the 54Cr+248Cm is the most favorable one for the production of the superheavy element with Z=120. peerReviewed

- Abstract
The mass–energy distributions of binary fission fragments (FFs) of excited exotic nucleus
178 Pt* were measured via the fusion reaction36 Ar +142 Nd at different beam energies within 158–222 MeV range using the double arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET. The analysis of mass–energy matrices reveals the presence of both asymmetric and symmetric modes corresponding to respective lower and higher total kinetic energy (TKE) of the fragments within 42–64 MeV excitation energy. The agreement of measured mass width with theoretical systematics and dominance of the associated symmetric TKE component at 93 MeV excitation energy indicates the significant predominance/suppression of symmetric/asymmetric mode, respectively. The most probable light and heavy mass peaks of asymmetric fission mode of178 Pt are spotted at 79 and 99 u, respectively. As inferred from the theory, the mass–TKE events observed at the highest measured excitation energy (93 MeV) endorse the presence of the fast-fission process in178 Pt* at high angular momentum. fission, quasifission, super heavy elements - Abstract
Background: Low-energy multinucleon transfer reactions may be used for production of new neutron-enriched heavy nuclei. Purpose: Our aim is to investigate the influence of proton (Z=82) and neutron (N=82, 126) shells as well as orientation effects on the formation of reaction products in the inverse quasifission process in the reactions 156,160Gd + 186W. Methods: Mass, energy, and angular distributions of primary binary fragments formed in the reactions 156Gd+186W at an energy of 878 MeV, and 160Gd+186W at 860 and 935 MeV, have been measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET at the U400 cyclotron of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (FLNR) at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna. Results: Enhancement in the yield of products with masses 200–215 u has been found for both reactions. The cross sections of the formation of trans-target fragments with masses around 208 u are found to be about 10μb at the Coulomb barrier energy and reach the level of 0.5 mb at the energy above the barrier for side-to-side collision. Conclusions: The enhanced yield of products with masses heavier than the target mass confirms the important role of the closed shells at Z=82 and N=82, 126 in the inverse quasifission process in low-energy damped collisions. The orientation effect caused by the strong deformation of colliding nuclei can result in a gain in the yield of heavy target-like fragments.

A large volume NaI detector was used to lodge inside of a cylindrical opening, targets, subsequently bombarded by beams of the 9MV Tandem of IFIN-HH. The gamma response of the spectrometer allows in many cases to determine the total reaction cross section and even its parts due to inelastic scattering and fusion. Excitation functions have been measured for reactions induced by protons, alpha particles and

The features of fission fragments formed in the near barrier reaction 32 S + 197 Au ( E beam lab = 166 MeV ) are investigated. The measurement was performed at the ALTO facility of IPN Orsay, France, with the aim of clarifying the quantitative contribution of the quasi-fission process to the total fission events. The mass and total kinetic energy of the fission fragments were compared to the expectations of the liquid drop model, revealing an asymmetric fission component which may be traced back to a quasi-fission process mixed with the fusion–fission events. The γ -rays and neutrons measured in coincidence with the fission fragments were used to yield additional information for the discrimination of the two aforementioned mechanisms. All observed trends are consistent and fairly well reproduced by the statistical model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
Many observations strongly support the hypothesis that nuclei may fission through several independent fission modes (multimodal fission) interpreted as different prescission shapes and fission paths in a multidimensional potential energy landscape where shell effects are dominant. Mass distributions of the fission fragments are sensitive to the potential energy landscape and appear to be single humped (symmetric) or double humped (asymmetric). In many cases a mixture of both modes is observed. We propose here our study on 180Hg. Binary fission fragments formed in the reaction 68Zn + 112Sn → 180Hg at different excitation energies around the Coulomb barrier were detected using the double-arm time-of-flight technique with the spectrometers CORSET. The experiment was performed at JYFL (Jyvaskyla, Finland). We will discuss an analysis of the mass distributions in terms of fission modes predicted by a five-dimensional fission model. We have found out that the mass distributions can be well reproduced by considering a symmetric fission mode and two asymmetric modes at (AL ≈ 80, AH ≈ 100) and (AL ≈ 70 and AH ≈ 110).

HYBRID reactors , *GAMMA ray spectrometer , *HEAVY nuclei , *TIME-of-flight spectrometry ,FLEROV Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (Dubna, Russia) - Abstract
The reaction 34S + 186W at Elab =160 MeV was investigated with the aim of diving into the features of the fusion-fission process. Gamma rays in coincidence with binary reaction fragments were measured using the high efficiency gamma-ray spectrometer ORGAM at the TANDEM Accelerator facility of I.P.N., Orsay, and the time-of-flight spectrometer for fission fragments (FF) registration CORSET of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (FLNR), Dubna. The coupling of the ORGAM and CORSET setups offers the unique opportunity of extracting details for characterizing the fusion-fission process and gives information regarding production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. The FF-γ coincidence method is of better use then the γ - γ coincidence method when dealing with low statistic measurements and also offers the opportunity to precisely correct the Dopler shift for in-flight emitted gamma rays. Evidence of symmetric and asymmetric fission modes were observed in the mass and TKE distributions, occurring due to shell effects in the fragments. Coincident measurements allow for discrimination between the gamma rays by accepting a specific range within the mass distribution of the reaction products. Details regarding the experimental setup, methods of processing the acquisitioned data and preliminary results are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; The mass, energy and angular distributions of binary fragments formed in the reactions $^{64}$Ni + $^{238}$U, $^{58}$Fe + $^{244}$Pu, $^{52}$Cr + $^{248}$Cm, $^{54}$Cr + $^{248}$Cm at energies near the Coulomb barrier have been measured. The analysis of energy distributions of the symmetric fragments with mass numbers ${{{{A}_{{{\text{CN}}}}}} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{{{A}_{{{\text{CN}}}}}} 2}} \right. \kern-0em} 2} \pm 20$ formed in these reactions have been applied to separate compound nucleus fission and quasi-fission. The estimated fusion probability for the reactions Cr, Fe, and Ni ions with actinide targets shows an exponential dependence on the mean fissility parameter of the system and shows also that reaction with Cr ions is more favorable for production of the super heavy element with Z = 120.

International audience; The overlap in the mass symmetric region of the reaction products from fusion-fission and quasi-fission complicates the assignment of symmetric events to complete fusion on the basis of the mass distribution alone. Additional observables, besides mass distribution, should be used. The method proposed here relies on the fact that fusion-fission and quasifission are characterized by a different timescale. Within this framework we performed a detailed study to find out if timescales can be probed via angular momentum as measured via γ rays multiplicity. The proof of principle was carried out by measuring the γ rays in coincidence with two fragments in the reaction 32S + 197Au at beam energy near the Coulomb barrier. The experiment has been performed at the Tandem ALTO facility at IPN Orsay using a detection setup consisting of ORGAM and PARIS γ detector arrays coupled with the CORSET time-of-flight spectrometer. Preliminary results on the sensitivity of this method to distinguish reaction channels with different dynamics are discusses.

International audience; Compound nucleus fission and quasi-fission are both binary decay channels whose common properties make the experimental separation between them difficult. A way to achieve this separation could be to probe the angular momentum of the binary fragments. This can be done detecting gamma rays in coincidence with the two fragments. As a case study, the reaction 32S + 197Au near the Coulomb barrier has been performed at the Tandem ALTO facility at IPN ORSAY. ORGAM and PARIS, two different gamma detectors arrays, are coupled with the CORSET detector, a two-arm time-of-flight spectrometer. TOF-TOF data were analyzed to reconstruct the mass-energy distribution of the primary fragments coupled with gamma multiplicity and spectroscopic analysis. Preliminary results of will be shown.

Multi-nucleon transfer reactions are nowadays the only known mean to produce neutron-rich nuclei in the Terra Incognita. The closed-shell region N=126 is crucial for both studying shell-quenching in exotic nuclei and the r-process, being its last "waiting-point". The choice of suitable reactions is challenging and a favorable case is 136Xe+208Pb, near the Coulomb barrier, because their neutron shell-closures play a stabilizing role, favoring the proton-transfer from lead to xenon. TOF-TOF data were analyzed to reconstruct the mass-energy distribution of the primary fragments. Preliminary results of an experiment held at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro with PRISMA, aimed at A and Z identification of the products, will be shown. peerReviewed
