Abstract

The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is a synthesis of quality-controlled fCO2 (fugacity of carbon dioxide) values for the global surface oceans and coastal seas with regular updates. Version 3 of SOCAT has 14.7 million fCO2 values from 3646 data sets covering the years 1957 to 2014. This latest version has an additional 4.6 million fCO2 values relative to version 2 and extends the record from 2011 to 2014. Version 3 also significantly increases the data availability for 2005 to 2013. SOCAT has an average of approximately 1.2 million surface water fCO2 values per year for the years 2006 to 2012. Quality and documentation of the data has improved. A new feature is the data set quality control (QC) flag of E for data from alternative sensors and platforms. The accuracy of surface water fCO2 has been defined for all data set QC flags. Automated range checking has been carried out for all data sets during their upload into SOCAT. The upgrade of the interactive Data Set Viewer (previously known as the Cruise Data Viewer) allows better interrogation of the SOCAT data collection and rapid creation of high-quality figures for scientific presentations. Automated data upload has been launched for version 4 and will enable more frequent SOCAT releases in the future. High-profile scientific applications of SOCAT include quantification of the ocean sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide and its long-term variation, detection of ocean acidification, as well as evaluation of coupled-climate and ocean-only biogeochemical models. Users of SOCAT data products are urged to acknowledge the contribution of data providers, as stated in the SOCAT Fair Data Use Statement. Abstract

We investigated gastric acid secretion in 638 gastric cancer patients with respect to the association between aging and histologic types. In intestinal type tumors in which invasion is restricted to the mucosa, and in diffuse type tumors where the tumor invaded the serosa there was a significantly negative correlation between acid secretion and age. However, no relationship was found between gastric acid output and age in signet ring cell carcinoma. On the other hand, a significantly negative correlation between acid secretion and age was shown in male patients with well differentiated type and in females with signet ring cell carcinoma. In conclusion, low acid secretion related to aging may play an important role in developing cancer cells in intestinal type tumors especially in the male elderly, and in diffuse type tumors in the female elderly, respectively.

Abstract

The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT), an activity of the international marine carbon research community, provides access to synthesis and gridded fCO(2) (fugacity of carbon dioxide) products for the surface oceans. Version 2 of SOCAT is an update of the previous release (version 1) with more data (increased from 6.3 million to 10.1 million surface water fCO(2) values) and extended data coverage (from 1968-2007 to 1968-2011). The quality control criteria, while identical in both versions, have been applied more strictly in version 2 than in version 1. The SOCAT website (http://www.socat.info/) has links to quality control comments, metadata, individual data set files, and synthesis and gridded data products. Interactive online tools allow visitors to explore the richness of the data. Applications of SOCAT include process studies, quantification of the ocean carbon sink and its spatial, seasonal, year-to-year and longer-term variation, as well as initialisation or validation of ocean carbon models and coupled climate-carbon models.

Abstract

The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT), an activity of the international marine carbon research community, provides access to synthesis and gridded fCO2 (fugacity of carbon dioxide) products for the surface oceans. Version 2 of SOCAT is an update of the previous release (version 1) with more data (increased from 6.3 million to 10.1 million surface water fCO2 values) and extended data coverage (from 1968–2007 to 1968–2011). The quality control criteria, while identical in both versions, have been applied more strictly in version 2 than in version 1. The SOCAT website has links to quality control comments, metadata, individual data set files, and synthesis and gridded data products. Interactive online tools allow visitors to explore the richness of the data. Applications of SOCAT include process studies, quantification of the ocean carbon sink and its spatial, seasonal, year-to-year and longerterm variation, as well as initialisation or validation of ocean carbon models and coupled climate-carbon models.

Abstract

The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is an effort by the international marine carbon research community. It aims to improve access to carbon dioxide measurements in the surface oceans by regular releases of quality controlled and fully documented synthesis and gridded fCO2 (fugacity of carbon dioxide) products. SOCAT version 2 presented here extends the data set for the global oceans and coastal seas by four years and has 10.1 million surface water fCO2 values from 2660 cruises between 1968 and 2011. The procedures for creating version 2 have been comparable to those for version 1. The SOCAT website (http://www.socat.info/) provides access to the individual cruise data files, as well as to the synthesis and gridded data products. Interactive online tools allow visitors to explore the richness of the data. Scientific users can also retrieve the data as downloadable files or via Ocean Data View. Version 2 enables carbon specialists to expand their studies until 2011. Applications of SOCAT include process studies, quantification of the ocean carbon sink and its spatial, seasonal, year-to-year and longer-term variation, as well as initialisation or validation of ocean carbon models and coupled-climate carbon models.

Abstract

We investigated the peptic ulcer recurrence rates during maintenance therapy with H2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs) following first-line therapy with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Patients with gastric ulcer (GU) or duodenal ulcer (DU) were enrolled in this study; 583 eligible patients (GU, 325; DU, 258) were administered lansoprazole (30 mg/day for 8 weeks for GU, and the same dosage for 6 weeks for DU) as first-line therapy, and a half dose of H2RA as maintenance therapy for 12 months. Endoscopic photographs were taken before administration and after 8 (GU) and 6 (DU) weeks of lansoprazole administration. Ulcer stage was evaluated using the classification of Sakita and Miwa. Endoscopic examinations were performed 6 months or 12 months after the start of maintenance therapy or when a recurrence was suspected because of the appearance of subjective symptoms. The healing rates for GU and DU patients after completion of lansoprazole therapy were 79% in both groups, while the S2-stage healing rates were 18% and 31%, respectively. At 1 year after the start of maintenance therapy, the recurrence rates were 25% for GU and 39% for DU patients. In DU patients, the recurrence rates from S1-stage and S2-stage were 49% and 20%, respectively (P = 0.004), but no significant difference was found between these rates in GU patients. The recurrence rates in H. pylori-positive patients before lansoprazole administration were 27% for GU and 43% for DU patients. We concluded that the maintenance therapy with a half-dose of H2RA following PPI therapy was insufficient to prevent recurrences of GU and DU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: KCNQ1 and KCNE1 form slowly activating delayed rectifier potassium currents (I Ks ). Loss-of-function of I Ks by KCNQ1 variants causes type-1 long QT syndrome (LQTS). Also, some KCNQ1 variants are reported to cause epilepsy. Segment 4 (S4) of voltage-gated potassium channels has several positively-charged amino acids that are periodically aligned, and acts as a voltage-sensor. Intriguingly, KCNQ1 has a neutral-charge glutamine at the third position (Q3) in the S4 (Q234 position in KCNQ1), which suggests that the Q3 (Q234) may play an important role in the gating properties of I Ks . We identified a novel KCNQ1 Q234K (substituted for a positively-charged lysine) variant in patients (a girl and her mother) with LQTS and epileptiform activity on electroencephalogram. The mother had been diagnosed with epilepsy. Therefore, we sought to elucidate the effects of the KCNQ1 Q234K on gating properties of I Ks ., Methods: Wild-type (WT)-KCNQ1 and/or Q234K-KCNQ1 were transiently expressed in tsA201-cells with KCNE1 (E1) (WT + E1-channels, Q234K + E1-channels, and WT + Q234K + E1-channels), and membrane currents were recorded using whole-cell patch-clamp techniques., Results: At 8-s depolarization, current density (CD) of the Q234K + E1-channels or WT + Q234K + E1-channels was significantly larger than the WT + E1-channels (WT + E1: 701 ± 59 pA/pF; Q234K + E1: 912 ± 50 pA/pF, p < 0.01; WT + Q234K + E1: 867 ± 48 pA/pF, p < 0.05). Voltage dependence of activation (VDA) of the Q234K + E1-channels or WT + Q234K + E1-channels was slightly but significantly shifted to depolarizing potentials in comparison to the WT + E1-channels ([V 1/2 ] WT + E1: 25.6 ± 2.6 mV; Q234K + E1: 31.8 ± 1.7 mV, p < 0.05; WT + Q234K + E1: 32.3 ± 1.9 mV, p < 0.05). Activation rate of the Q234K + E1-channels or WT + Q234K + E1-channels was significantly delayed in comparison to the WT + E1-channels ([half activation time] WT + E1: 664 ± 37 ms; Q234K + E1: 1,417 ± 60 ms, p < 0.01; WT + Q234K + E1: 1,177 ± 71 ms, p < 0.01). At 400-ms depolarization, CD of the Q234K + E1-channels or WT + Q234K + E1-channels was significantly decreased in comparison to the WT + E1-channels (WT + E1: 392 ± 42 pA/pF; Q234K + E1: 143 ± 12 pA/pF, p < 0.01; WT + Q234K + E1: 209 ± 24 pA/pF, p < 0.01) due to delayed activation rate and depolarizing shift of VDA., Conclusion: The KCNQ1 Q234K induced I Ks gain-of-function during long (8-s)-depolarization, while loss of-function during short (400-ms)-depolarization, which indicates that the variant causes LQTS, and raises a possibility that the variant may also cause epilepsy. Abstract

Introduction: There is little evidence for ivabradine hydrochloride in patients undergoing hemodialysis., Methods: In this open-label prospective interventional trial of hemodialysis patients with chronic heart failure, during 12 weeks of treatment, changes in Heart rate (HR), frequency of dialysis-related hypotension were examined, and we investigated health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) and adverse effects., Results: 18 patients from 6 facilities were enrolled in the study. HR significantly decreased over time, from 87 ± 12.61/min at baseline to 75.85 ± 8.91/min (p = 0.0003), and systolic blood pressure also increased significantly (p < 0.0001). The frequency of dialysis-related hypotension was markedly reduced (p = 0.0001). The HR-QOL survey showed significant improvements in Social Functioning among others (p = 0.0178). No specific adverse events occurred., Conclusion: Ivabradine hydrochloride improved dialysis-related hypotension. Furthermore, the HR-QOL improvement effect were suggested. These results demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of ivabradine hydrochloride., (© 2024 The Authors. Abstract

Background: An increased cardiac troponin T (cTnT) level identifies a high-risk group in patients with end-stage renal disease; however, the mechanism of cTnT elevation remains unclear in such patients without acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Therefore, we explored the relationship between cTnT levels and the hemodynamic parameters and the prognostic potential of cTnT in stable patients with chronic hemodialysis (HD)., Methods: We included consecutive 174 patients with HD who were referred for coronary angiography due to stable coronary artery disease (CAD), peripheral artery disease (PAD), or heart failure (HF). Hemodynamic measurement was performed, and plasma cTnT, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and A-type natriuretic peptide (ANP) were measured at the same time. The potential of 3 biomarkers to predict all-cause mortality, cardiac death or hospitalized HF, and vascular event was assessed., Results: Increased log cTnT levels were correlated with increased log BNP and log ANP levels (r = 0.531, p < 0.001 and r = 0.411, p < 0.001, respectively). Not increased log cTnT, but increased log BNP and log ANP were associated with the presence of CAD and the extent of CAD. In contrast, they were all associated with the New York Heart Association functional classification and the presence of PAD and significantly correlated with left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) in an independent manner. Increased cTnT and BNP levels were associated with the mortality and hospitalized HF. However, increased cTnT was not associated with vascular events, unlike increased BNP., Conclusions: In patients with chronic HD without ACS, increased cTnT reflected increased LVEDP and the presence of HF or PAD independently, and it did not reflect the presence of CAD in contrast to increased BNP. cTnT and BNP were significant prognostic predictors; however, increased cTnT was associated with HF-related events, not with arteriosclerotic events., (© 2019 The Author(s) Published by S. Abstract

In patients with insufficient blood pressure (BP) control, despite using a combination regimen containing an angiotensin receptor blocker and a calcium channel blocker (CCB), whether a greater dose of CCB or adding a diuretic is more effective at lowering BP remains unclear. We conducted a multicenter randomized clinical trial to compare the efficacy of switching from the daily administration of a single-pill fixed-dose combination of irbesartan (100 mg) and amlodipine (5 mg) to irbesartan (100 mg) with an increased dose of amlodipine (10 mg) (HD group, n=62) or irbesartan (100 mg) and amlodipine (5 mg) with 1 mg of indapamide (D group, n=63) in patients with poorly controlled hypertension. BP measured at home was monitored by a physician using a telemonitoring system. Between the HD and D groups, no significant differences were observed in morning home BP changes (mean reduction of systolic/diastolic BP, 1.7/0.9 mmHg; 95% confidence intervals, -2.4 to 5.7/-1.4 to 3.2; P=0.19/0.37), achievement rate of target BP (45.2% vs. 42.9%, P=0.80), BP variability independent of the mean (P⩾0.74), other variability indices (P⩾0.55) and time to stabilization, which was calculated using a fitted analysis (13.1 days vs. 11.4 days, P=0.99). Although a significant increase in serum uric acid was observed in the D group (P<0.0001), neither clinically relevant abnormal laboratory test results nor critical BP changes were observed throughout the trial period. Both antihypertensive drug combination strategies were effective treatment options. Further investigation is required to determine the appropriate use of both therapies based on the various pathologies associated with hypertension.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common condition seen in primary gastroenterology practice. The present study was conducted to compare the clinical effectiveness of mosapride and teprenone in patients with FD., Methods: Prospective clinical comparative study with random allocation of open labeled medications was performed as a multicenter trial in Japan. 1042 patients presenting symptoms of FD, either with gastric stasis (GSS) and/or epigastric pain (EPS), were enrolled. After initial endoscopic evaluation, medication either with mosapride 5 mg tid or teprenone 50 mg tid was started. Severity and frequency of GSS and EPS, health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) by the SF-36 Japanese version, and patients' compliance to medication was evaluated., Results: Organic lesions were found in 90 patients (9%) in the 1027 patients examined by endoscopy. Among those without any specific lesions detected by endoscopy, gastrointestinal symptoms were resolved within one week after the endoscopy in 264 (28%) patients before initiating medication. 618 patients who remained symptomatic were randomized to medication either with mosapride (n = 311) or teprenone (n = 307). Two-week treatment with mosapride significantly improved GSS and EPS, while teprenone tended to improve only GSS. Mosapride also improved HR-QOL. 91% of patients treated with mosapride favored their medication, while only 52% of patients treated with teprenone favored their medication., Conclusions: Endoscopic evaluation at patients' presentation was effective to find active lesions and to improve FD symptoms.
