1. Y-AR: A Mixed Reality CAD Tool for 3D Wire Bending

Abstract

Wire bending is a technique used in manufacturing to mass-produce items such as clips, mounts, and braces. Wire bending machines like the DIWire by Pensalabs have made this process accessible for personal fabrication. However, such machines are controlled using Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software which is hard to use, making custom design challenging. We present Y-AR, a Computer Aided Design (CAD) interface for 3D wire bending. Y-AR uses mixed reality to let designers create structures that physically connect to objects in the environment. The interface incorporates springs as design primitives which (1) apply forces to hold objects, and (2) counter-act dimensional inaccuracies inherently caused by mid air modeling and measurement errors in AR. We demonstrate design workflows to design and fabricate a range of mechanisms designed in Y-AR as well as structures made using free-hand design tools. In our usability evaluation, all 12 participants successfully designed and fabricated a functional bottle holder with Y-AR. 10 out of 12 participants felt that the system aided their design process, rating it above 7 out of 10.

12. Adaptive radiotherapy in locally advanced head and neck cancer: The importance of reduced margins

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Adaptive radiotherapy (ART) involves treatment re-planning based on anatomical changes, which may improve target coverage and sparing of organs-at-risk (OARs). This study retrospectively assessed the technical feasibility and potential benefits of daily ART in combination with reduced planning target volume (PTV) margins for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Materials and Methods: Thirty-one patients, encompassing 902 treatment fractions, treated with radiotherapy to 60.0–68.0 Gy in 2 Gy/fraction were studied. Synthetic CTs (sCT) from daily kVCT images were created and contours propagated using deformable image registration (DIR). Target contours were reviewed and corrected. On the sCT, non-adapted delivered doses and ART-plans with 5 mm (clinical standard) and 2 mm PTV-margin were evaluated. All daily dose distributions were then accumulated. Results: Target contours required correction in 48 % of the fractions. Daily non-adapted D98%,CTV was > 95 % in 890 (5 mm) and 825 (2 mm) out of 902 fractions. All adapted plans achieved D98%,CTV > 95 %. Significant reductions in mean doses to OARs were observed for PTV = 2 mm ART-plans: 4.1 Gy for parotid, 2.6 Gy for submandibular, 3.3 Gy for oral cavity, 4.0 Gy for esophagus, and 3.8 Gy for larynx. Conclusion: ART-planning on sCT and DIR propagated contours was feasible and promising for further clinical testing. To obtain a potential clinical benefit of ART, a synchronous reduction of the PTV-margin was warranted. Daily ART can be used to maintain adequate target dosimetry for every fraction, though for the accumulated treatment, insufficient target coverage without ART is unlikely to occur.

Abstract

We describe road data models which can represent high level features of a road network such as population, points of interest, and road length/cost and capacity, while abstracting from time and geographic location. Such abstraction allows for a simplified traffic usage and congestion analysis that focus on the high level features. We provide theoretical results regarding mass conservation and sufficient conditions for avoiding congestion within the model. We describe a road data model generation tool, which we call "TØI Roads". We also describe several parameters that can be specified by a TØI Roads user to create graph data that can serve as input for training graph neural networks (or another learning approach that receives graph data as input) for predicting congestion within the model. The road data model generation tool allows, for instance, the study of the effects of population growth and how changes in road capacity can mitigate traffic congestion.

23. Children's Use of English as Lingua Franca in Swedish Preschools

Abstract

This paper highlights a current phenomenon reported from preschools placed in multilingual areas in Sweden, namely that some preschoolers with mutually different language backgrounds sometimes use English as lingua franca instead of Swedish during play. The data stems from a study of language environments in Swedish preschools situated in both monolingual and multilingual areas. The analyses reveal that many children are influenced by the English language in both areas, but to a much greater extent in multilingual areas. An interesting situation arises when the majority language of society, which is also the language of education and lingua franca of the preschool, acquires a less prevailing role in children's accomplishment of everyday practices. Data show that the participating children are exposed to and speak English to a varying extent. They learn and teach each other English, and speak English in an array of pragmatic purposes; to position themselves in the social hierarchies of the preschool group, to create meaning within their shared peer culture and for the purpose of exclusion of intruders. English is also used as a secret language of friendship.

Abstract

Molecular dynamics simulations, with full Coulomb interaction and self-consistent field emission, are used to examine mutual space-charge interactions between beams originating from several emitter areas, in a planar infinite diode. The simulations allow observation of the trajectory of each individual electron through the diode gap. Results show that when the center-to-center spacing between emitters is greater than half of the gap spacing the emitters are essentially independent. For smaller spacing the mutual space-charge effect increases rapidly and should not be discounted. A simple qualitative explanation for this effect is given., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

This report describes the asymmetric synthesis of a focused library of enantiopure structured triacylglycerols (TAGs) comprised of a single saturated fatty acid (C6, C8, C10, C12, C14 or C16), a pure bioactive n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (EPA or DHA) and a potent drug (ibuprofen or naproxen) intended as a novel type of prodrug. One of the terminal sn-1 or sn-3 positions of the glycerol backbone is occupied with a saturated fatty, the remaining one with a PUFA, and the drug entity is present in the sn-2 position. This was accomplished by a six-step chemoenzymatic approach starting from enantiopure (R)- and (S)-solketals. The highly regioselective immobilized Candida antarctica lipase (CAL-B) played a crucial role in the regiocontrol of the synthesis. All combinations, a total of 48 such prodrug TAGs, were prepared, isolated and fully characterized, along with 60 acylglycerol intermediates, obtained in very high to excellent yields.

Abstract

In this work, we address an important problem of optical see through (OST) augmented reality: non-negative image synthesis. Most of the image generation methods fail under this condition, since they assume full control over each pixel and cannot create darker pixels by adding light. In order to solve the non-negative image generation problem in AR image synthesis, prior works have attempted to utilize optical illusion to simulate human vision but fail to preserve lightness constancy well under situations such as high dynamic range. In our paper, we instead propose a method that is able to preserve lightness constancy at a local level, thus capturing high frequency details. Compared with existing work, our method shows strong performance in image-to-image translation tasks, particularly in scenarios such as large scale images, high resolution images, and high dynamic range image transfer.

Abstract

In applications such as optical see-through and projector augmented reality, producing images amounts to solving non-negative image generation, where one can only add light to an existing image. Most image generation methods, however, are ill-suited to this problem setting, as they make the assumption that one can assign arbitrary color to each pixel. In fact, naive application of existing methods fails even in simple domains such as MNIST digits, since one cannot create darker pixels by adding light. We know, however, that the human visual system can be fooled by optical illusions involving certain spatial configurations of brightness and contrast. Our key insight is that one can leverage this behavior to produce high quality images with negligible artifacts. For example, we can create the illusion of darker patches by brightening surrounding pixels. We propose a novel optimization procedure to produce images that satisfy both semantic and non-negativity constraints. Our approach can incorporate existing state-of-the-art methods, and exhibits strong performance in a variety of tasks including image-to-image translation and style transfer.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of telemedicine in health care. However, video telemedicine requires adequate broadband internet speeds. As video-based telemedicine grows, variations in broadband access must be accurately measured and characterized. ObjectiveThis study aims to compare the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Microsoft US broadband use data sources to measure county-level broadband access among veterans receiving mental health care from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). MethodsRetrospective observational cohort study using administrative data to identify mental health visits from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2020, among 1161 VHA mental health clinics. The exposure is county-level broadband percentages calculated as the percentage of the county population with access to adequate broadband speeds (ie, download >25 megabits per second) as measured by the FCC and Microsoft. All veterans receiving VHA mental health services during the study period were included and categorized based on their use of video mental health visits. Broadband access was compared between and within data sources, stratified by video versus no video telemedicine use. ResultsOver the 2-year study period, 1,474,024 veterans with VHA mental health visits were identified. Abstract

Abstract Sustainably produced renewable biomass has the potential to replace fossil-based feedstocks, for generation of biobased fuels and chemicals of industrial interest, in biorefineries. In this context, seaweeds contain a large fraction of carbohydrates that are a promising source for enzymatic and/or microbial biorefinery conversions. The thermoanaerobe Thermoanaerobacterium AK17 is a versatile fermentative bacterium producing ethanol, acetate and lactate from various sugars. In this study, strain AK17 was engineered for more efficient production of ethanol by knocking out the lactate and acetate side-product pathways. This was successfully achieved, but the strain reverted to acetate production by recruiting enzymes from the butyrate pathway. Subsequently this pathway was knocked out and the resultant strain AK17_M6 could produce ethanol close to the maximum theoretical yield (90%), leading to a 1.5-fold increase in production compared to the wild-type strain. Strain AK17 was also shown to successfully ferment brown seaweed hydrolysate from Laminaria digitata to ethanol in a comparatively high yield of 0.45 g/g substrate, with the primary carbon sources for the fermentations being mannitol, laminarin-derived glucose and short laminari-oligosaccharides. As strain AK17 was successfully engineered and has a wide carbohydrate utilization range that includes mannitol from brown seaweed, as well as hexoses and pentoses found in both seaweeds and lignocellulose, the new strain AK17_M6 obtained in this study is an interesting candidate for production of ethanol from both second and third generations biomass.

BackgroundAlthough family caregivers play a critical role in care delivery, research has shown that they face significant physical, emotional, and informational challenges. One promising avenue to address some of caregivers’ unmet needs is via the design of digital technologies that support caregivers’ complex portfolio of responsibilities. Augmented reality (AR) applications, specifically, offer new affordances to aid caregivers as they perform care tasks in the home. ObjectiveThis study explored how AR might assist family caregivers with the delivery of home-based cancer care. The specific objectives were to shed light on challenges caregivers face where AR might help, investigate opportunities for AR to support caregivers, and understand the risks of AR exacerbating caregiver burdens. MethodsWe conducted a qualitative video elicitation study with clinicians and caregivers. We created 3 video elicitations that offer ways in which AR might support caregivers as they perform often high-stakes, unfamiliar, and anxiety-inducing tasks in postsurgical cancer care: wound care, drain care, and rehabilitative exercise. The elicitations show functional AR applications built using Unity Technologies software and Microsoft Hololens2. Using elicitations enabled us to avoid rediscovering known usability issues with current AR technologies, allowing us to focus on high-level, substantive feedback on potential future roles for AR in caregiving. Moreover, it enabled nonintrusive exploration of the inherently sensitive in-home cancer care context. ResultsWe recruited 22 participants for our study: 15 clinicians (eg, oncologists and nurses) and 7 family caregivers. Our findings shed light on clinicians’ and caregivers’ perceptions of current information and communication challenges caregivers face as they perform important physical care tasks as part of cancer treatment plans. Most significant was the need to provide better and ongoing support for execution of caregiving tasks in situ, when and where the tasks need to be performed. Such support needs to be tailored to the specific needs of the patient, to the stress-impaired capacities of the caregiver, and to the time-constrained communication availability of clinicians. We uncover opportunities for AR technologies to potentially increase caregiver confidence and reduce anxiety by supporting the capture and review of images and videos and by improving communication with clinicians. However, our findings also suggest ways in which, if not deployed carefully, AR technologies might exacerbate caregivers’ already significant burdens. ConclusionsThese findings can inform both the design of future AR devices, software, and applications and the design of caregiver support interventions based on already available technology and processes. Our study suggests that AR technologies and the affordances they provide (eg, tailored support, enhanced monitoring and task accuracy, and improved communications) should be considered as a part of an integrated care journey involving multiple stakeholders, changing information needs, and different communication channels that blend in-person and internet-based synchronous and asynchronous care, illness, and recovery.

Abstract

Over the past two decades there has been a number of global outbreaks of viral diseases. This has accelerated the efforts to model and forecast the disease spreading, in order to find ways to confine the spreading regionally and between regions. Towards this we have devised a model of geographical spreading of viral infections due to human spatial mobility and adapted it to the latest COVID-19 pandemic. In this the region to be modelled is overlaid with a two-dimensional grid weighted with the population density defined cells, in each of which a compartmental SEIRS system of delay difference equations simulate the local dynamics (microdynamics) of the disease. The infections between cells are stochastic and allow for the geographical spreading of the virus over the two-dimensional space (macrodynamics). This approach allows to separate the parameters related to the biological aspects of the disease from the ones that represent the spatial contagious behaviour through different kinds of mobility of people acting as virus carriers. These provide sufficient information to trace the evolution of the pandemic in different situations. In particular we have applied this approach to three in many ways different countries, Mexico, Finland and Iceland and found that the model is capable of reproducing and predicting the stochastic global path of the pandemic. This study sheds light on how the diverse cultural and socioeconomic aspects of a country influence the evolution of the epidemics and also the efficacy of social distancing and other confinement measures.

Abstract

ObjectivesTo determine the intra-individual flow variation in serially acquired studies, and the influence of this variation on subsequent hemodynamic simulations using the inlet flow as a boundary condition. Author: Kindly check and confirm whether the corresponding authors are correctly identified.Confirmed.Materials and methodsThis prospective study included 51 patients (37 females and 14 males) with unruptured intracranial aneurysms who have received more than three times follow-up of 2D phase-contrast MR. The flow and velocity parameters were extracted to calculate the reproducibility and variation. Patient-specific computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed using the measured flows.ResultsIntraclass correlation coefficients for mean and maximum velocity and flow parameters ranged from 0.77 to 0.90. A 10% CV of mean flow was identified. Variations of 10% in inlet flow resulted in hemodynamic changes including 41.41% of peak systolic wall shear stress; 39.13% of end-diastolic wall shear stress; 2.79% of low shear area at peak systole; 2.12% of low shear area at end diastole: 47.57% of time-averaged wall shear stress; and 0.17% of oscillatory shear index.ConclusionThis study identified 10% of intra-individual mean flow variation on phase-contrast MR. Intra-individual flow variation resulted in a non-negligible variation in wall shear stress, but relatively small variation in low shear area in hemodynamic calculations.

Abstract

Background and purposeThe reliability of contrast-enhanced MRA in monitoring serial volumetric changes of unruptured intracranial aneurysms has not been established. We aimed to determine the coefficient of variance of contrast-enhanced MRA in measuring aneurysm volumes, thus establishing criteria for aneurysm growth and permitting identification of variables predictive of growth.Materials and methodsAneurysm volumes were measured from serial contrast-enhanced MRA studies of patients with untreated intracranial aneurysms who underwent >2 sequential MR imaging evaluations. After coregistering all sequential studies in 3D space for each aneurysm and signal intensity normalization, aneurysm volume was determined across all time points. A linear mixed effects model was built to estimate the coefficient of variance of the measurement as well as to determine predictive variables. Growth was defined as relative growth exceeding 2 times the measurement coefficient of variance (sudden growth, as 4 times the coefficient of variance).ResultsA total of 95 patients with 112 aneurysms were included (5.9 scans during 4.0 years on average, 616 scan measurements in total). The coefficient of variance was 5.5% of the aneurysm volume, and the relative growth rate was dependent on the location: anterior cerebral artery, 4.52% per year; vertebral artery, 2.46% per year; middle cerebral artery, 2.74% per year; basilar artery, 2.36% per year; internal carotid artery, 1.14% per year. Thirty-six of 112 (32%) aneurysms were characterized as growing, and 11/36 of them had an episode of sudden growth.ConclusionsVolume measurement of unruptured intracranial aneurysms by contrast-enhanced MRA seems a reliable metric for tracking the growth trajectory of aneurysms. Furthermore, the aneurysm growth rate differs among different locations.

Abstract

Bipolar disorder is a heritable mental illness with complex etiology. We performed a genome-wide association study of 41,917 bipolar disorder cases and 371,549 controls of European ancestry, which identified 64 associated genomic loci. Bipolar disorder risk alleles were enriched in genes in synaptic signaling pathways and brain-expressed genes, particularly those with high specificity of expression in neurons of the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Significant signal enrichment was found in genes encoding targets of antipsychotics, calcium channel blockers, antiepileptics and anesthetics. Integrating expression quantitative trait locus data implicated 15 genes robustly linked to bipolar disorder via gene expression, encoding druggable targets such as HTR6, MCHR1, DCLK3 and FURIN. Analyses of bipolar disorder subtypes indicated high but imperfect genetic correlation between bipolar disorder type I and II and identified additional associated loci. Together, these results advance our understanding of the biological etiology of bipolar disorder, identify novel therapeutic leads and prioritize genes for functional follow-up studies.
