Monogeneans of the genus Paradiplozoon were found on the gills of specimens of five species of schizothoracid caught using fyke nets in the upper stream of the Yarkand River, Xinjiang, China in May–August 2019. The preserved parasite were stained with boric acid magenta and hematoxylin, respectively. Morphological observations, line drawings, photomicrographs and measurements were made in Nikon ECLIPSE E200 imaging optical microscope and digitally edited. The molecular analysis included the study of the sequence of the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS 2) of the ribosomal DNA region, calculation and analysis of genetic distance, with phylogenetic reconstructions based on the Bayesian inference and Maximum Likelihood analysis. The natural infection rate of host fish was 10–88%. Morphological analysis indicated that the average length of the new species was 2.125 mm while the width was 0.69 mm. The anterior part was 1.387 mm in length and the average length of the posterior part was 0.545 mm. The vitellaria was well-developed and located in the front of the body. A single ovary (oval shaped) was located at the back end of the reproductive binding area. A testis (irregular mass) was located behind or parallelled to the ovary. The new species can be distinguished from all the recorded Paradiplozoon species in terms of morphological characteristics such as haptor, clamp and central hook morphology, intestine shape and body size. In addition, the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS 2) of the ribosomal DNA region of the diplozoid was compared with that of known diplozoids previously published. It indicated that there were significant differences between the new species and the published diplozoids. Both morphological and molecular analysis support that the diplozoid is a new species. Based on the sampling location, the new species was named Paradiplozoon yarkandense n. sp.

Background Monogeneans, in general, show a range of unique adaptations to a parasitic lifestyle, making this group enormously diverse. Due to their unique biological properties, diplozoid monogeneans represent an attractive model group for various investigations on diverse biological interactions. However, despite numerous studies, there are still gaps in our knowledge of diplozoid biology and morphofunctional adaptations. Results In this study, we provide a comprehensive microscopic analysis of systems/structures involved in niche searching, sensing and self-protection against the host environment, and excretory/secretory processes in Eudiplozoon nipponicum. Freeze-etching enabled us to detect syncytium organisational features not visible by TEM alone, such as the presence of a membrane subjacent to the apical plasma membrane (separated by a dense protein layer) and a lack of basal plasma membrane. We located several types of secretory/excretory vesicles and bodies, including those attached to the superficial membranes of the tegument. Giant unicellular glands were seen accumulating predominantly in the apical forebody and hindbody haptor region. Muscle layer organisation differed from that generally described, with the outer circular and inner longitudinal muscles being basket-like interwoven by diagonal muscles with additional perpendicular muscles anchored to the tegument. Abundant muscles within the tegumentary ridges were detected, which presumably assist in fixing the parasite between the gill lamellae. Freeze-etching, alongside transmission electron and confocal microscopy with tubulin labelling, enabled visualisation of the protonephridia and nervous system, including the peripheral network and receptor innervation. Three types of receptor were identified: 1) uniciliated sensory endings with a subtle (or missing) tegumentary rim, 2) obviously raised uniciliated receptors with a prominent tegumentary rim (packed with massive innervation and muscles) and 3) non-ciliated papillae (restricted to the hindbody lateral region). Conclusions This study points to specific morphofunctional adaptations that have evolved in diplozoid monogeneans to confront their fish host. We clearly demonstrate that the combination of different microscopic techniques is beneficial and can reveal hidden differences, even in much-studied model organisms such as E. nipponicum.

Although Madagascar has more than 350 frog species of which all but two are endemic to the island, the known polystome (Monogenea: Polystomatidae) diversity parasitizing Malagasy frogs is low, encompassing five species of Madapolystoma, one species of Kankana and one Metapolystoma. Investigating the parasite diversity of frog parasites at selected Malagasy localities led to the discovery of undescribed polystomes. Five treefrogs, Boophis albilabris, Boophis doulioti, Boophis luteus, Boophis madagascariensis and Boophis occidentalis were found to be infected and are reported here as hosts for new Metapolystoma species. Morphological investigation, combining examination of body length, haptor length, genital bulb width, genital crown diameter, genital spine number, genital spine length, ovary length, egg length, hamulus length, hamulus guard length and hamulus hook length, revealed five distinct morphotypes. Phylogenetic analysis and genetic divergences obtained for three of the five morphotypes, support the distinction of new species. Metapolystoma ansuanum n. sp. is described from B. luteus, Metapolystoma falcatum n. sp. from B. doulioti, Metapolystoma multiova n. sp. from B. occidentalis, Metapolystoma theroni n. sp. from B. madagascareniensis and Metapolystoma vencesi n. sp. from B. albilabris. Finally, although the validity of Metapolystoma as taxon is not fully resolved yet, the phylogenetic position of the described species and their morphology provide clear evidence for new metapolystome taxa., Graphical abstract Image 1

Hemichromis fasciatusis a voracious predator and a prolific breeder used to control Tilapia reproduction. Parasitic diseases can affect growth, reproduction and many other parameters of the dynamics of host populations. The present study aimed to compare the infection dynamics ofE. melenesisbetween three ecosystems. Fish were sampled from December 2017 to September 2019 using a gill net, they were euthanized and the parasitological examination was carried out within 24 hours after capture. The abdominal cavity was opened; the sex were identified, then the digestive tract was removed and; the stomach isolated. Monogeneans were dislodged from the stomach wall and mounted in a drop of ammonium picrate–glycerine mixture. Their identification was based on the morphology of sclerotized parts of the haptor and male copulatory organ. Of 302 host specimens examined, 152 were infected by 2590Enterogyrus melenensis. The overall mean intensity was low and did not vary significantly between the three ecosystems studied, while the prevalence globally differed significantly. The mean intensity and prevalence ofE. melenensisvaried with seasons but were not cyclic. The inner location ofE. melenensisattenuates the direct influence of the water temperature on this endohelminth resulting in its non-cyclical profile. This study highlights the necessity to consider the environment when comparing host parasitism; it also reinforces the practice recommending quarantining native large fish specimens captured in the nature and used as sires in ponds, in order to avoid epizootic outbreaks.

Pronotogrammella n. g. is erected to accommodate Pronotogrammella boegeri n. sp. (type-species), Pr. scholzi n. sp. and Pr. multifasciatus n. sp. (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae). The new species are gill parasites of the threadfin bass Pronotogrammus multifasciatus Gill (Perciformes: Serranidae), a demersal teleost collected from off the coastal zone of Puerto Pizarro, Tumbes, Peru. Pronotogrammella n. g. is mainly characterised by having broadly fork-shaped dorsal anchors, which have an accessory anchor sclerite articulated to the tip of the superficial roots. Pronotogrammella n. g. is also characterised by having: (i) a tubular tapered-shaped male copulatory organ (MCO), filamentous distally, with a clockwise coil at distal end or not, lacking accessory piece; (ii) a dorsal bar with an anteromedial delicate umbelliform membrane supported by two processes; (iii) hooks with upright blunt thumb and uniform shank; (iv) a vaginal aperture dextrolateral; (v) a subquadrangular haptor, with inconspicuous lateral flaps and lacking haptoral reservoirs; and (vi) eye-spot or chromatic granules absent. Pronotogrammella boegeri n. sp. is characterised by its crosier-shaped MCO having a clockwise coil at distal end and by its dorsal bar with a straight anteromedial processes. Pronotogrammella scholzi n. sp. is typified by possessing of a dorsal bar with the anteromedial processes like cow horns, hoof-shaped deep roots of the dorsal anchors and a broader shaft of the MCO. Pronotogrammella multifasciatus n. sp. differs from all congeners by having a tubular MCO with twisted shaft and a base with a short and broad arm and by having an almost dumbbell-shaped ventral bar.

Histopathological changes of Cichlidogyrus philander Douëllou, 1993 on the gills of Pseudocrenilabrus philander (Weber, 1897) were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Observations revealed that C. philander attaches to its host by alternating the prohaptor (for temporary attachment or feeding) or haptor (using haptoral parts for firm and secured attachment). The sharp terminal ends of the anchors are inserted basally into the gill lamella, between two adjacent secondary gill lamellae and the marginal hooklets assist by superficially penetrating, holding and lifting epithelial tissue in the proximal region of the secondary gill lamella. The attachment of C. philander resulted in compression, rupturing of the interlamellar epithelium, change in the organization of epithelial cells in both primary and secondary gill lamella, displacement of the extracellular cartilaginous matrix, occasional rupturing of blood vessels and erythrocytes and some cells becoming ill-defined. At the site of attachment, the host response comprises of hyperplasia, increase in the number of mucous cells and infiltration with neutrophils. It was concluded that the effect of C. philander is mild in natural conditions.

A new species of the Dactylogyridae is reported parasitizing the gills of Oxidoras niger (Valenciennes, 1821) from the Peruvian Amazon. Cosmetocleithrum gigas sp. n. does not show any resemblance to other species of the genus and can be morphologically differentiated from other congeneric species by presenting a hammer-shaped accessory piece; a small haptor with small bars and anchors; both anchors presenting developed superficial roots and reduced deep roots; conspicuous folds on both roots and bars hat-shaped, expanded laterally forming two protuberances covered with rough folds. Additionally, C. gigas sp. n. is the largest species of the genus so far reported.

Monogenea is a class constituting the ectoparasitic flukes mainly on skin and gills of fish, with greater diversity of species worldwide. In the present study, four different species of monogenean parasites were recorded; they were isolated from gills of four freshwater fish species captured from locations along the River Nile, Qena governorate, Egypt. These were Cichlidogyrus aegypticus from Oreochromis niloticus (93.33, 28/30); Protoancylodiscoides malapteruri from Malapterurus electricus (90%, 18/ 20). Quadricanthus bagrae from Bagrus bajad (30%, 15/ 50), and Ancyrocephalus sp. from Mormyrus kannume (75%, 30/ 40). The recovered parasites were described by light microscopy, where the different sclerotized parts of the haptor and copulatory organs were used as key of identification of each species. C. aegypticus can be differentiated by the presence of haptor with two pairs of strongly developed anchors, two long projections of the complex bar and a narrow copulatory tube with a wide basal funnel. P. malapteruri was characterized by the presence of broad haptor with two large dorsal and two small ventral hamuli. Ancyrocephalus sp. was characterized by a haptor which was not clearly demarcated from the anterior body with ventral and dorsal anchors similar in shape. Quadriacanthus bagrae was discriminated by possessing a complex bar with long projection at the center and two long ends, the dorsal and ventral anchors were without distinct roots. The present study represented new locality records for these species off the River Nile, Qena governorate, Egypt.

The present study aimed to contribute to the monogenean dactylogyrids that occur in C. auratus from an ornamental fish farm in southern Brazil. Samples of goldfish were obtained from a fish farm and the gills were removed and analysed to identify the species of Dactylogyrus to determine the levels of infestation. Three species of Dactylogyrus were found in the gills: Dactylogyrus anchoratus, Dactylogyrus baueri and Dactylogyrus formosus. The most prevalent species was D. baueri [prevalence (P) = 70%, mean intensity (MI) = 2.14 ± 1.21, mean abundance (MA) = 1.5 ± 1.43], followed by D. anchoratus (P = 60%, MI = 1.67 ± 0.81, MA = 1.00 ± 1.05) and D. formosus (P = 30%, MI = 1.66 ± 1.15, MA = 0.5 ± 1.64). Dactylogyrus anchoratus shares morphological characteristics with D. arcuatus by the similarity in shape of the haptor parts. Dactylogyrus baueri shows similarity to D. dulkeiti in relation to the pair of anchors and accessory piece of the male copulatory complex. Dactylogyrus formosus presents an accessory piece with branch and total length of the anchors smaller than D. anchoratus. This study reports the occurrence of D. anchoratus, D. baueri and D. formosus in goldfish cultured in southern Brazil. These monogenean species have been described in cyprinid fishes that have a wide geographic distribution with the result of the dissemination of the host in the world.

BACKGROUND : Tetraonchidae is a small and relatively monomorphic family of dactylogyroid monogeneans. Since the morphology of sclerites of the attachment organ (haptor) is one of the primary criteria in tetraonchid taxonomy, the confocal study of sclerites and associated musculature may provide valuable taxonomic information. PURPOSE : The aim of this study was to examine the haptoral sclerites and musculature in Tetraonchus monenteron (Wagener, 1857), a common parasite of pike.Haptoral musculature of T. monenteron was studied using phalloidin staining and confocal microscopy, with sclerites visualized in the reflection confocal mode.Haptoral armature of T. monenteron consists of ventral and dorsal pairs of anchors, a ventral bar, eight pairs of marginal hooks and at least three pairs of accessory sclerites. Anchors are operated by 14 muscles, of which the most prominent are extrinsic muscles, the transverse muscle interconnecting the ventral anchors, three muscles connecting the ventral anchor to the ventral bar, and four muscles of the dorsal and ventral anchors inserting on the haptoral wall. The extrinsic muscles are attached to the braceshaped sclerites, which in turn are connected to the dorsal anchors via muscle bundles.The gaffing action of the dorsal anchors is likely to be achieved by the extrinsic muscles and the transverse muscle that clamps the extrinsic muscles against the body wall. The ventral anchors are probably held in attached position by the transverse muscle and four muscles inserting on the ventral bar and haptoral wall. The haptoral musculature may have potential utility for tetraonchid taxonomy.

The development of activities related to aquaculture has considerably increased the relevance of studies on parasites and other pathogens of aquatic organisms, especially those with potential for cultivation and commercialization. The objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility and occurrence of monogenetic infections in Colossoma macropomum, Piaractus mesopotamicus, Piaractus brachypomus and their hybrids. The animals were cultivated for 10 months in a closed recirculation system. After this period they were slaughtered and necropsies performed with total removal of the gills. These were fresh analyzed and positive for monogenetics were fixed in 10% formaldehyde. The monogenetics present in the gills of each fish were quantified and submitted to the preparation of slides to identify the genera. For identification, sclerotized structures were observed, such as hooks, anchors, haptor bars and copulatory complex; important in identifying the genera and species of this group. Based on the quantification, parasitism intensity and parasite occurrence were established. No fish collected showed clinical signs of parasitic infections. During the parasitological analysis of the gills two genera of monogenetics Anacanthorus sp. and Mymarothecium sp. For Anacanthorus sp. Piaractus mesopotamicus species, pirapicu hybrids and post F1 animals were the most resistant animals. For Mymarothecium sp. pacu species and all hybrids showed resistance

Little information for parasitic infections of Carangoides fulvoguttatus was recorded. The present study was intended to investigate the gill parasite Heteromicrocotyla polyorchis of this fish and to provide a full morphological description and clarify its taxonomic status through phylogenetic analysis of the 28S rRNA gene region. A total of sixty fish specimens have been collected from the studied area (the Red Sea in Jeddah Province, Saudi Arabia) and gills were isolated and examined for identification of parasites. Using light electron microscopy, the recovered monogenean parasite's morphology was exhaustively characterized and described. Microscope examinations found that this parasite species represent Heteromicrocotyla polyorchis, and it could be distinguished from congeners of the same genus by armed genital atrium and cirrus sac, follicular post-ovarian testes, unique shape and number of clamps on both haptor sides, and the dorsally curved tip of the male copulatory organ. Morphological features were combined with molecular analysis of the 28S rRNA gene region. The selected gene for the isolated Heteromicrocotyla species was analyzed using appropriate primers to assist in phylogeny with those in the GenBank database. The present monogenean species was characterized by unique genetic sequences that were analyzed and deposited in the GenBank for the first time under the accession number MW406473. Phylogenetic analyses reported that the maximum identity between the current Heteromicrocotyla species and taxa of Heteromicrocotylidae was between 91.42 and 92.09% and confirmed its taxonomic status in this family with a well-distinct clade. The present study supported the second report of H. polyorchis as carangid fish ectoparasites and investigates the first appearance in C. fulvoguttatus inhabiting Saudi Arabia.

Engraulicola lamothei n. sp. (Monogenea: Gastrocotylidae) is described from the gills of Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Teleostei: Carangidae) from Veracruz, southern Gulf of Mexico. This monogenean is 1110-1670 (1328) µm long and 260-550 (363) µm wide. The haptor is asymmetrical, the long side has several clamps (35-42), and the short side has a single clamp; the posterior end has a small lappet armed with two dissimilar pairs of hooks. Male and female genital pores open near the anterior body end; the male genital pore is ventral, armed with a corona of 12 spines; the female pore is dorsal and unarmed. The new species differs from Engraulicola forcipopenis George, 1960 and from Engraulicola micropharyngella Unnithan, 1967 by lacking a pair of pointed forceps-like spines at the end of the penis amid the corona spines, and from Engraulicola thrissocles Tripathi, 1959 by the number of clamps on both sides, the number the hook pairs on the terminal lappet and the testis number. This is the first record of the genus Engaulicola George, 1960 on the Atlantic West Coast.

Herein, we describe several newly-collected specimens of Neopolystoma cf. orbiculare from the urinary bladder of 2 alligator snapping turtles, Macrochelys temminckii (Troost in Harland, 1835) (Cryptodira: Chelydridae Gray, 1831) from Comet Lake (30°35′46.94″N, 88°36′3.12″W), Pascagoula River, Mississippi. Our specimens differed from all previous descriptions of N. orbiculare and its junior subjective synonyms by the combination of having intestinal ceca adorned with triangular pockets and that terminate dorsal to the haptor, distinctive hooklets each having a handle and guard of approximately equal length and having a much longer and curved blade, 16 genital coronet spines that each possess 1–2 flanges per spine, pre-testicular vaginal pores, and vaginal ducts that are anterior to the junction of the oviduct and genito-intestinal canal. Some of our specimens were enantiomorphic (4 and 3 had a dextral and sinistral ovary, respectively). Nucleotide sequences (large subunit ribosomal DNA [28S], small subunit ribosomal DNA [18S], and cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 mitochondrial gene [COI]) for our specimens were most similar to GenBank sequences ascribed to N. orbiculare. Single-gene and concatenated phylogenetic analyses confirmed that NeopolystomaPrice, 1939 is polyphyletic and that our isolates share a recent common ancestor with those ascribed to N. orbiculare. This is the first record of a polystomatid from Mississippi, from the Pascagoula River, and from the alligator snapping turtle (and only the second species of Neopolystoma reported from any snapping turtle).

Una nueva especie de Monogenea Trinibaculum pinctiarum n. sp. fue reportada parasitando las branquias de Astyanax fasciatus, conocido popularmente como "lambarí de rabo rojo", capturado en el río Paranapanema, reservatorio Jurumirim, São Paulo, Brasil. La nueva especie se asigna al género Trinibaculum por la presentación de una barra ventral doble y la apertura vaginal dextrolateral. Esta es la segunda especie, junto con T. altiparanae, perteneciente a este género que parasita las branquias de los peces del género Astyanax. Esta especie se parece con T. altiparanae en las partes del haptor y la presencia de la vagina distal con el bulbo, pero difiere por tener: (1) un órgano copulador masculino enrollado, (2) pieza accesoria en forma de pinza, (3) proceso posteroventral ausente en la barra dorsal, (4) ganchos con el pulgar deprimido. La filogenia hipotética de especies de Trinibaculum (Índice de Consistencia = 87%, Índice de Retención = 80%, longitud = 16) sobre la base de 13 series de transformación es (Trinibaculum rotundus (T. brazilensis (T. altiparanae, Trinibaculum pinctiarum n. sp.))). Esta hipótesis se corrobora con la actual filogenia de los peces characiformes. Además en este estudio se presenta una nueva clave de identificación para las especies del género Trinibaculum basada en caracteres morfológicos.

Septitrema lichae n. g., n. sp. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae: Merizocotylinae) is described from the nasal tissue of the deep-sea kitefin shark, Dalatias licha (Bonnaterre) (Dalatiidae) collected off Algiers, Algeria. The new genus is distinguished from the other genera in the subfamily by the number and arrangement of the loculi on the haptor having one central and seven peripheral loculi. The diagnosis of the Merizocotylinae is amended to accommodate this species and a key to the genera of the Merizocotylinae is provided. Terminology of the haptoral loculi in the Merizocotylinae and the status of some of the genera in the subfamily are also discussed.

A total of 52 specimens of the Pacific seabream Acanthopagrus pacificus Iwatsuki, Kume et Yoshino from the Gulf of Tonkin off Vietnam were examined for monogeneans. Twenty fish were parasitised by 101 individuals of five monogenean species, including two known species Allodiscocotyla diacanthi Unnithan, 1962 and Heterapta chorinemi (Tripathi, 1956), as well as three new species, Polylabroides tienyenensis sp. n., Polylabroides tonkinensis sp. n. and Metacamopia lebedevi sp. n. Polylabroides tienyenensis and P. tonkinensis are morphologically more similar to Polylabroides guangdongensis Zhang et Yang, 2001 in comparison with other species within the genus, based on the absence of small spines on the cirrus. However, P. tonkinensis is distinguished from P. guangdongensis by fewer clamps on the haptor and by the different shapes of the large spines on the cirrus. Similarly, P. tienyenensis differs from P. guangdongensis by vaginal ducts with fewer branches, fewer clamps and smaller egg size. Metacamopia lebedevi is distinguished from Metacamopia chorinemi (Yamaguti, 1953) by the arrangement of testes (one row vs two rows), diverticula absent in the oesophagus, and the number of anchor pairs (one vs two); it differs from Metacamopia oligoplites Takemoto, Amato et Luque, 1996 by the smaller haptor, shape and absence of small sclerotised hooks, the number of ribs in their clamps, and the position of the testes; it can be separated from Metacamopia indica (Unnithan, 1962) by having fewer testes and lacking sclerotised structures in the vagina. The present study also provides the measurements for A. diacanthi, H. chorinemi, and proposes a new key to all species of Polylabroides.

A survey of monogenean parasites on the gills of Synodontis clarias was carried out in Ivory Coast. Five species of monogeneans were found, of which four are new to science and are newly described here. The monogeneans were individually isolated from the gill and transferred directly onto a slide in a drop of glycerin ammonium picrate mixture (GAP). The haptor and the hard part of the copulatory complex were measured and drawings made using Motic BA310 microscope and Motic Image Plus 2.0 and Corel Draw software. Five species of Synodontella including four new to science were described. Synodontella anohmangniae n. sp., Synodontella antoineparisellei n. sp., Synodontella clariasi n. sp. and Synodontella samorossoensis n. sp. differ from the previously described Synodontella species mainly in the morphology of their male copulatory organs (MCO). Synodontella anohmangniae n. sp. is distinguishable by the dorsal transverse bar with a small point at each extremity of the concavity in its central part. Synodontella antoineparisellei n. sp. differs from all other known Synodontella spp. in the morphology of the penis, with an egg-shaped opening in its distal part. Synodontella clariasi n. sp. and Synodontella samorossoensis n. sp differs from all other described congeneric species mainly by the dorsal transverse bar surmounted by a highly sclerotized part.

BackgroundMicrocotyle erythrinivan Beneden & Hesse, 1863 (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea) and other closely related species of the genus are often considered as cryptic. Records in hosts other than the type-host with no species confirmation by molecular analyses have contributed to this situation.MethodsGill parasites of five sparid fishes,Boops boops(L.),Pagellus erythrinus(L.),P. acarne(Risso), Dentex dentex(L.) andPagrus pagrus(L.), from the Western Mediterranean off Spain were collected. Specimens ofMicrocotylespp. were characterised both molecularly and morphologically. Partial fragments (domains D1-D3) of the28SrRNA gene and the cytochromecoxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene were amplified and used for molecular identification and phylogenetic reconstruction. Principal components analysis was used to look for patterns of morphological separation.ResultsMolecular analyses confirmed the identity of three species:M. erythriniexP. erythrinusandPa. pagrus;M. isyebiBouguerche, Gey, Justine & Tazerouti, 2019 exB. boops; and a species new to science described herein,M. whittingtonin. sp. exD. dentex.The specific morphological traits and confirmed hosts (P. erythrinusandPa. pagrus) are delimited here in order to avoid misidentifications ofM. erythrini(sensu stricto).Microcotyle erythrini(s.s.) is mostly differentiated by the shape of its haptor, which is also longer than in the other congeners. New morphological and molecular data are provided forM. isyebifrom the Spanish Mediterranean enlarging the data on its geographical range.Microcotyle whittingtonin. sp. is described fromD. dentexand distinguished from the remaining currently recognised species of the genus by the number and robustness of the clamps.ConclusionsNew diagnostic morphological traits useful to differentiateMicrocotylespp. are suggested: (i) haptor dimensions including lobes; (ii) the thickness of the clamps; (iii) the size and shape of spines of the genital atrium; (iv) the extension of the posterior extremities of vitelline fields; and (v) the shape of egg filaments. The use of new morphological approaches may allow considering these species ofMicrocotyleas being pseudocryptic. The use of representative undamaged specimens that have been genetically confirmed as conspecific is considered crucial to avoid abnormally wide morphological ranges that prevent species differentiation.

Parasite biodiversity of fish in coral reefs of the South China Sea is still incompletely explored. We describe here a new species of Neohexostoma (Monogenea: Hexostomatidae) from the gill filaments of the dogtooth tuna Gymnosarda unicolor (Scombridae), collected off Yongshu Reef, South China Sea. Neohexostoma gymnosardae n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by the following features: (i) haptor clearly marked from body proper by a strongly constricted peduncle, divided in its posterior margin into two symmetrical lobes, (ii) vagina armed with scattered small blunt spines, (iii) eggs tied by their long polar filaments, (vi) esophagus with several lateral diverticula, (v) intestinal ceca unfused and extending into the haptor. We present an analysis of the relationships of this monogenean based on partial 28S rDNA sequences. An identification key for species of Neohexostoma is provided. This is the first member of the genus Neohexostoma known to parasitize a species of Gymnosarda.Neohexostoma gymnosardae n. sp. (Monogenea, Hexostomatidae), un parasite branchial de Gymnosarda unicolor (Valenciennes) (Teleostei, Scombridae) dans la mer de Chine méridionale.La biodiversité parasitaire des poissons dans les récifs coralliens de la mer de Chine méridionale est encore incomplètement explorée. Nous décrivons ici une nouvelle espèce de Neohexostoma (Monogenea, Hexostomatidae) des filaments branchiaux du thon à dents de chien Gymnosarda unicolor (Scombridae), collecté au large du récif de Yongshu, mer de Chine méridionale. An amendment for Diaphorocleidus is proposed, since additional characters observed in the new species required to extend the generic diagnostic features mainly to include: articulation process connecting the base of the MCO with accessory piece present or absent, and accessory piece with variable shapes (plate-like, pincer-shaped, wrench-shaped, sheath-shaped), divided or not into subunits. Characithecium paranapanemense n. sp. can be distinguished from other congeners by the morphology of its MCO and accessory piece. Molecular data of the new species (partial 28S rDNA and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I) were obtained and the first phylogenetic analysis based on 28S rDNA gene sequences for species of Characithecium and Diaphorocleidus are provided. In this study, integrative taxonomy is applied to describe a new dactylogyrid species, Ameloblastella pirarara sp. n. from the gills of Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, a commercially and ecologically important Amazonian catfish. Ameloblastella pirarara sp. n. can be distinguished from its congeners mainly by the morphology of the male copulatory organ (MCO), accessory piece, and anchors. The new species most resembles Ameloblastella unapi, from the Peruvian Amazon, but differs from it by the number of MCO rings, morphology of the vaginal canal and sclerotized structures of the haptor. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of the partial 28S rDNA (D1-D2 domains) gene placed the new species in a well-supported subclade of Ameloblastella spp. parasites of Neotropical siluriform fish, as a sister taxon to Ameloblastella unapioides. Thus, the new species described herein expands our knowledge of the diversity of monogenoid parasites from Amazonian freshwater fish.

The taxonomy of Ligophorus Euzet & Suriano, 1977, like the most of monopisthocotylean monogeneans, relies heavily on the morphology of sclerites of the posterior attachment organ (haptor). Geometric morphometric approach is used to analyse variability and compare the shapes of haptoral structures of these monogeneans. We outline the shapes of the sclerities by cubic Bezier curves and store results in SVG files. Every SVG outline is reduced to a set of harmonics of Elliptic Fourier transform using ElFourier program. Harmonics are the sequence of unique numbers that describe the shape of structures and are invariant to their sizes, rotation, and orientation. They allow reconstructing source outline images, finding their average form, analyzing variability and comparing shapes in combination with other numerical data like dimensions. We use that approach to investigate intra- and interspecific variability of 400 haptoral structures of seven representatives of Ligophorus, parasitising four mullet species from the Black Sea, and to discriminate these monogeneans. This method is perspective for the creation of semiautomatic key for identification of helminthes, which are mainly distinguished by the shape and dimensions of the attachment organs. The obtained results and method prospects are discussed.

Mycteronastes Kearn and Beverley-Burton, 1990 (Monogenoidea: Monocotylidae: Merizocotylinae) was resurrected from subjective synonymy with Merizocotyle Cerfontaine, 1894 , and its diagnosis was emended to include monocotylids with a haptor lacking a central loculus and having 5 peripheral (2 bilateral pairs and an unpaired anteromedial loculus), 1 interhamular, and 17 marginal loculi. The 3 species of Mycteronastes accepted herein are parasitic within the olfactory sacs of rays and sawfishes: Mycteronastes icopae ( Beverley-Burton and Williams, 1989 ) Kearn and Beverley-Burton, 1990 (type species) from the giant shovelnose ray, Glaucostegus typus (Anonymous (Bennett)) (Glaucostegidae), in the southwestern Pacific Ocean; Mycteronastes undulatae Kearn and Beverley-Burton, 1990 from the undulate ray, Raja undulata Lacepède (Rajidae), in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean; and Mycteronastes caalusi n. sp. from the smalltooth sawfish, Pristis pectinata Latham (Pristidae), in the Gulf of Mexico. Mycteronastes caalusi is most easily differentiated from its congeners by the combination of having 2 median cephalic papillae, an oval haptor that is wider than the body proper and lacks a deeply scalloped margin, a comparatively large anteromedial peripheral loculus, an unsclerotized male copulatory organ that is wholly anterior to the vaginal pores, a relatively small distal portion of the uterus (ootype chamber) that is mostly anterior to the vaginae, and a delicate uterus. The present study is the first report of a monocotylid from the olfactory sacs of P. pectinata and the first record of a species of Mycteronastes from the Gulf of Mexico. Notes on the taxonomy and systematics of some species assigned to Calicotyle Diesing, 1850 (Monocotylidae: Calicotylinae) are included.

The localisation and distribution of the serotoninergic nerve elements was studied for the first time in the flatworm Chimaericola leptogaster (Leuckart, 1830) using immunocytochemical methodology and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The musculature was investigated by histochemical staining of actin filaments; scanning electron microscopy was used to identify the sensory structures on the worm's surface. Uniciliated, bi-ciliated and multiciliated sensory endings have been described on the worm's surface. The morphological data demonstrate the presence of circular, longitudinal and diagonal muscles that comprise the musculature of C. leptogaster in the anterior, median and posterior body regions. Well-developed radial and circular muscle fibres were also observed surrounding the genital pore, two vaginae and in clumps of the haptor. The study revealed the presence of biogenic amine, serotonin, in the central and peripheral nervous systems of C. leptogaster: in the neurons and fibres of the cephalic ganglia and ventral nerve cord, in the innervation of reproductive system compartments. The localised sites of the serotoninergic elements point to important roles of serotonin in monogenean reproductive processes and, possibly, in the regulation of muscle function.

A new species of Characithecium , a genus of monogenean parasites of Neotropical characids, is described from specimens collected on the body surface and gills of Astyanax aff. fasciatus and Astyanax jacuhiensis from Lake Guaiba, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new species is similar to Characithecium costaricensis , but differs by having the haptor separated from the body by a long peduncle, and by having an accessory piece composed of 2 subunits in the male copulatory complex – 1 ventral pincer-shaped at the distal end, and 1 dorsal with an expanded rod-shaped proximal end and the distal end containing 3 elongated projections–, and the dorsal bar usually presenting a small median elevation in the anterior margin. This study increases the number of species of Characitecium to 7 and expands our knowledge on the diversity of monogenean parasites of characids.

The present study uses scanning and transmission electron microscopical observations to examine the haptoral features of the hexabothriid polyopisthocotylean monogenean Rajonchocotyle emarginata from the gills of the elasmobranch Amblyraja radiata. The haptor possesses six equal, pedunculate suckers, each armed with a large, curved, hooked sclerite, and an appendix bearing two small, terminal suckers and a pair of minute hamuli. The outer side of the distal region of the hooked sclerite forms a large bulge along the antero-lateral side of each sucker and the proximal region forms a small bulge on the opposite postero-lateral side; part of the large bulge, which covers the small sclerite hook, surmounts the sucker rim. The sucker sclerite is situated outside the main sucker muscle complex of the sucker wall and is surrounded by its own muscular envelope; close to the sclerite itself, long, tightly packed lamella-like processes of sarcoplasm are present. A muscular sphincter surrounds the distal region of the sclerite shaft. The sclerite consists of three heterogeneous layers, but its hook region is distinguished from the shaft by the presence of an additional homogeneous layer. Hamuli within the appendix consist of three distinct layers loosely surrounded by sarcoplasmic lamellae. The luminal surface of the appendicular suckers is covered with unusual, long, thin, interconnected surface protrusions. In all other regions of the haptor, the tegumental surface is smooth, with numerous shallow pores penetrating the "terminal web" of the syncytial cytoplasm. Unicellular gland cells are localized close to the base of the appendix, with their ducts, containing non-homogenous secretory bodies, opening onto the anterior haptoral surface. Two types of sense receptors are visible on the haptoral surface. The ultrastructural features of the haptor are discussed in relation to our understanding of their function and the evolutionary relationships of the basal polyopisthocotylean monogenean groups Hexabothriidae and Chimaericolidae.

Paracaesicola n. gen., is erected herein to accommodate a new microcotylid species, Paracaesicola nanshaensis n. sp., collected from the Yongshu Reef, South China Sea. This species is the first monogenean to be recorded from the gills of Paracaesio sordida. The new species is characterized by the following features: (i) haptor short, with clamps arranged in two equal bilateral rows; (ii) testes numerous, arranged in two roughly alternating longitudinal rows, extending into the haptor; (iii) genital atrium armed with 16 robust spines, which are vertically arranged on top of the sausage shaped muscular male copulatory organ; and (iv) single vagina, bottle-shaped, with a distinctly bulbous vaginal atrium. The terminals of the reproductive system discriminate Paracaesicola n. gen. from all other genera in the Microcotylidae. Molecular phylogenetic analyses, based on partial 28S rDNA, places Paracaesicola nanshaensis n. sp. within the microcotylid clade, but its sequence differs from all known available microcotylid sequences.Paracaesicola nanshaensis n. gen., n. sp. Les parties terminales du système reproducteur distinguent Paracaesicola n. gen. de tous les autres genres de Microcotylidae. Les analyses phylogénétiques moléculaires, basées sur l’ADNr 28S partiel, placent Paracaesicola nanshaensis n. sp. au sein du clade des Microcotylidae, mais sa séquence diffère de toutes les séquences de Microcotylidae disponibles.

Peruanocotyle n. gen. is proposed to accommodate Peruanocotyle chisholmae n. sp. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae). The new species is a gill parasite of the diamond stingray, Hypanus dipterurus (Jordan & Gilbert) (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae), a demersal chondrichthyan collected off the coast of Callao, Peru. Peruanocotyle n. gen. is placed in the Dasybatotreminae Bychowsky, 1957 because its anterior attachment organ has multiple glandular openings. Peruanocotyle chisholmae n. gen., n. sp. is unique among the Dasybatotreminae, by having: a well-developed, broadly ovoid anterior attachment organ with numerous grooves and an anteromedial notch; three prominent anterior glands that are connected to numerous peripheral glands; an unusual whip-shaped male copulatory organ composed of four connate tubes; an ejaculatory duct with slightly sclerotized walls where the proximal end has criss-crossed creases and the distal portion is highly convoluted; an ejaculatory bulb with one bipartite internal seminal vesicle; a wheel-shaped haptor with one central loculus and eight peripheral loculi; anchors that are much shorter than the width of marginal membrane and have an accessory sclerotized piece present; four oval testes, arranged in two groups; an ovary that has six clavate, proximal lobules and a distal portion that is strongly coiled; intestinal ceca with large lateral and medial diverticula; an oral opening surrounded by numerous small dome-like papillae; and a single vagina with sclerotized walls. Dasybatotreminae is amended to accommodate the new genus, and the new species is fully described and illustrated herein. The present finding adds to the other three marine monocotylids previously reported from Peru, namely Anoplocotyloides chorrillensis Luque & Iannacone, 1991; Anoplocotyloides papillatus (Doran, 1953) Young, 1967 and Monocotyle luquei Chero, Cruces, Iannacone, Sanchez, Minaya, Sáez & Alvariño, 2016.

The present study was performed to observe histopathological effects of Oculotrema hippopotami Stunkard, 1924 infection in the eye of Hippopotamus amphibius, as well as to reveal new details of morphology and structural features of this monogenean and its comparison between 2 age stages of the parasite. This was done using both light and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA) and histopathology. The presence of a mixture of different generations (adult and sub-adult) in one host individual is common for Oculotrema Stunkard, 1924 in contrast to Polystoma Zeder, 1800. New metrical and graphical information obtained for adults and sub-adults compared with the previous studies. Here we show the presence of genital papillae in adults, metrical data on the distal part of the vas deferens. SEM micrographs of sperm ejaculatory structures and information about the flattened dorsal side of the body provided for the first time. Histopathological changes, such as necrosis and hemorrhage in host tissues as a result of O. hippopotami attachment structures are described. Structural analysis of different body parts of O. hippopotami of both age groups are also included. We show qualitative differences in the presence of hardening ions (S, P, Ca) in attachment structures (oral and haptor suckers) that increase with the age of the worm. The presence of sub-adults and adults on the same host, together with high levels of infection without high pathogenicity may account for Oculotrema being one of the most successful parasites among the Monogenea.

Neonchocotyle violantei n. sp. (Monogenea: Hexabothriidae) infects the gill of the Atlantic guitarfish, Pseudobatos lentiginosus (Rhinopristiformes, Rhinobatidae) from littoral waters of Celestún, Yucatán, Mexico. It is assigned to Neonchocotyle because it has, among other features, an asymmetrical haptor, a seminal receptacle, a smooth oötype, and an egg with two elongate filaments. It differs from Neonchocotyle pastinacae, the only congener, by having a small body (821 long by 315 wide, length to width = 2.6:1), two pairs of microhooks between the haptoral appendix suckers, extracaecal (submarginal) vaginal pores, and 5-9 testes. This is the first record of a species of Neonchocotyle in the Gulf of Mexico, the first monogenean reported from P. lentiginosus in Mexico and the second species of Hexabothriidae reported from Mexico. Resumo Neonchocotyle violantei n. sp. (Monogenea: Hexabothriidae) infecta brânquia de Pseudobatos lentiginosus, (Rhinopristiformes, Rhinobatidae) de águas litorâneas ao largo da costa de Celestún, Yucatán, México. É atribuído a Neonchocotyle porque tem, entre outras características, um haptor assimétrico, um receptáculo seminal, um tipo oótipo liso e um ovo com dois filamentos alongados. Difere de Neonchocotyle pastinacae, o único congênere, por ter um corpo pequeno (821 de comprimento por 315 de largura, comprimento a largura = 2,6: 1), dois pares de microganchos entre as ventosas do apêndice haptoral, poros vaginais extracaecais (submarginal) e 5-9 testículos. Este é o primeiro registro de uma espécie de Neonchocotyle no Golfo do México, o primeiro monogenético registrado em P. lentiginosus no México e a segunda espécie de Hexabothriidae relatada no México.

A new genus and species of monogenean belonging to Hexabothriidae, Hypanocotyle bullardi n. gen. n. sp., is described based on specimens collected from the gill filaments of the diamond stingray, Hypanus dipterurus (Jordan et Gilbert) (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae), a demersal chondrichthyan collected off the coast of Callao, Peru. Hypanocotyle n. gen. has the following combination of diagnostic features that differentiate it from other hexabothriid genera: haptor symmetrical; vasa efferentia having proximal (narrow, with thin glandular wall) and distal (expanded, interlaced, with thick glandular wall) portions, joining medially to form vas deferens; vas deferens having proximal (expanded, sinuous, with thick glandular wall) and distal (narrow, strongly sinuous, with thin glandular wall) portions; male copulatory organ unarmed, proximal portion slightly sinuous and tube-like, distal portion funnel-shaped; prostatic glands present, distributed around of the MCO; seminal receptacle present; ootype lacking longitudinal rows of large cells (no ootype cotele); vaginae parallel, with well-differentiated proximal (glandular, narrow, tube-like, slightly sinuous) and distal (musculoglandular, convoluted) portions; gland cells surrounding the vaginal duct along the entire length of distal portion, densely clustered in middle portion; uterine eggs with 2 elongate filaments. Phylogenetic reconstructions by maximum-likelihood method, based on newly obtained partial 18S and 28S sequences, shows that H. bullardi n. gen. is included within the family Hexabothriidae, order Diclybothriidea. This is the second hexabothriid genus recorded from a diamond stingray (Dasyatidae), and the fourth hexabothriid species recorded from Peru. A key to hexabothriid genera is provided.

Diplozoidae (Monogenea) are blood-feeding freshwater fish gill ectoparasites with extraordinary body architecture and a unique sexual behaviour in which two larval worms fuse and transform into one functioning individual. In this study, we describe the body organisation of Paradiplozoon homoion adult stage using a combined approach of confocal laser scanning and electron microscopy, with emphasis on the forebody and hindbody. Special attention is given to structures involved in functional adaptation to ectoparasitism, i.e. host searching, attachment and feeding/metabolism. Our observations indicate clear adaptations for blood sucking, with a well-innervated mouth opening surrounded by sensory structures, prominent muscular buccal suckers and a pharynx. The buccal cavity surface is covered with numerous tegumentary digitations that increase the area in contact with host tissue and, subsequently, with its blood. The buccal suckers and the well-innervated haptor (with sclerotised clamps controlled by noticeable musculature) cooperate in attaching to and moving over the host. Putative gland cells accumulate in the region of apical circular structures, pharynx area and in the haptor middle region. Paired club-shaped sacs lying laterally to the pharynx might serve as secretory reservoirs. Furthermore, we were able to visualise the body wall musculature, including peripheral innervation, the distribution of uniciliated sensory structures essential for reception of external environmental information, and flame cells involved in excretion. Our results confirm in detail that P. homoion displays a range of sophisticated adaptations to an ectoparasitic life style, characteristic for diplozoid monogeneans.

Scanning and transmission electron microscopical observations were made of the surface topography of Dictyocotyle coeliaca (Nybelin, 1941) (Monopisthocotylea: Monocotylidae), a unique endoparasitic monogenean from the body cavity of the ray Amblyraja radiata (Elasmobranchii: Rajidae). Scanning investigation show the presence on the ventral side of the anterior body of smooth areas with pit-like depressions and shallow ridges, whereas the tegument of the middle and posterior regions of the body is extensively folded, and on the dorsal surface the tegument is smooth but interrupted by deep depressions. Transmission observation revealed the presence of invaginations of varying irregularity and depth, which form the various depressions of the tegumental surface. Non-ciliated, dome-shaped papillae occur singly or in groups and are common around the mouth and both the genital and vaginal pores, but exhibit no particular orientation. The haptor is much reduced, compared with that of ectoparasitic monocotylids, and is covered ventrally with an irregular array of 40-70 shallow loculi. Internal differences occur in the thickness of the syncytial tegumentary layer of the haptoral loculi and septa and also in the number of cytoplasmic inclusions. The locular surface has distinct ultrastructural characteristics, the most obvious of which are a honeycomb arrangement of small pockets measuring 0.6 × 0.75 to 1.0 × 1.7 μm in diameter, a terminal web beneath the surface plasma membrane and large outgrowths on the surface of the loculi filled with lysosome-like bodies. The surface specializations of the body and haptoral tegument of D. coeliaca are discussed in relation to their being adaptations to an endoparasitic environment.

Based on material collected from Pseudemys nelsoni (Reptilia: Chelonia: Emydidae) during a parasite survey of the herpetofauna around Gainesville, Florida, USA, Polystomoides nelsoni sp. n. is described as a new polystome species. This parasite was found in the oral and pharyngeal region of the host. In a sample of nine Pseudemys nelsoni, three specimens were found to release polystome eggs. One turtle was euthanized and dissected and found to be infected in the oral region with 19 specimens belonging to an as-yet-unknown Polystomoides. This is only the fifth Polystomoides recorded from the Nearctic realm. This species is distinguished from known species by a combination of characteristics including marginal hooklet morphology, body length and haptor dimensions.

Denarycotyle gardneri n. gen., n. sp. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) is described from the gills of the stingray, Rhinoptera steindachneri (Myliobatidae), collected in marine waters off Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. The genus is assigned to Euzetiinae because it has a haptor with one central loculus, one additional loculus on either side of the central loculus and 10 peripheral loculi. However, the genus described herein can be distinguished from Euzetia, the only genus currently assigned to Euzetiinae, by the presence of two accessory structures on the dorsal surface of the haptor and hamuli with a sclerotized accessory piece on each hamulus. Specimens of D. gardneri n. gen., n. sp. were found on the gills of 4 of 18 individuals of R. steindachneri (22%) but were not present on Rhinobatos glaucostigma Jordan and Gilbert (1 individual), Urotrygon rogersi (Jordan and Starks) (2), Narcine entemador Jordan and Starks (3), Aetobatus narinari (Euphrasen) (1) or Dasyatis longa (Garman) (3). This is the third genus and the fourth species of a monogenean recorded from Rhinoptera and the second member of Euzetiinae from Mexico and from the neotropics. Keys to the subfamilies of Monocotylidae and to the species of Euzetiinae, as well as a hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships between Heterocotylinae, Decacotylinae, and Euzetiinae are provided.
