Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.) is a versatile crop with strong stress resistance and promising growth potential. Widely cultivated in various regions of China, it ranks among the top crops globally in terms of both planting area and consumption. Known for its pleasant taste and high nutritional value, pumpkin pulp is rich in essential trace elements for the human body. Even after harvest, pumpkin fruit remains metabolically active, requiring its own nutrients to complete the postripening process. Failure to provide proper postharvest storage conditions can lead to excessive water loss and rapid nutrient depletion, resulting in rough, shriveled, and even rotten peel, ultimately diminishing the economic value of the pumpkin. This study aimed to investigate the changes in pumpkin quality and physiological indicators during storage to provide insights to determine optimal consumption and processing periods of pumpkins. The pumpkins were stored at a temperature of 16 ± 2 °C and 60% to 80% humidity during the experiment. The dynamic changes in fruit quality, hardness, respiration rate, malondialdehyde content, level of antioxidant enzymes, and other indicators of two pumpkin cultivars (BM5 and JQ) were assessed during storage, and the correlation among these indicators was evaluated. The results indicated a decrease in the vitamin C content and pulp hardness, whereas the superoxide dismutase and catalase contents initially increased and then decreased, and malondialdehyde and weight loss rates increased over the storage period. The weight loss rate exhibited significant positive and negative correlations with the malondialdehyde content (P < 0.01) of the two cultivars, whereas the vitamin C content showed a significant positive correlation with pulp hardness (P < 0.01). The findings indicate that optimal fruit quality was maintained within 40 days of postharvest storage. This study provides valuable insights into the selection of storable pumpkin cultivars.

Due to the greater negative impacts on humans and ecosystems, compound events (CEs) have received increasing attention in China over recent decades. Previous studies mainly considered combinations of frequent hazards (e.g., extreme hot and dry events or heatwaves and extreme precipitation), potentially leading to an inadequate understanding of CEs hotspots, as the occurrence of CEs varies considerably with the diverse hazard types and their temporal sequence (multivariate compound events (MCEs) and temporally compounding events (TCEs)). Here, using daily meteorological observations from 1961 to 2020, we identify 44 CEs types considering the temporal sequences of various hazards from that period and explore their occurrence patterns in China. The results show that 12 CEs types related to extreme hot or dry events widely and frequently (return period < 1 year) occur in China, particularly compound extreme hot-dry-high fire risk events (return period of 0.2–0.4 yrs). Regarding the temporal sequences, MCEs and TCEs have similar spatial distributions, but the magnitudes of MCEs are approximately 1.1 to 2.6 times those of TCEs. This difference is obvious in CEs formed by multiple hazards (>2). By considering occurrence patterns (return period and magnitude), temporal trends, and correlations between different hazards, we determine that the southern humid regions of China are prone to CEs. These results provide a general reference on the national scale for identifying CEs hotspots where more climate action is needed in the future.

Abstract Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), a common complication of diabetes, is defined as ventricular dysfunction in the absence of underlying heart disease. Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), including long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs), play a crucial role in the development of DCM. Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) was used to identify key modules in DCM-related pathways. DCM-related miRNA-mRNA network and DCM-related ceRNA network were constructed by miRNA-seq to identify hub genes in these modules. We identified five hub genes that are associated with the onset of DCM, including Troponin C1 (Tnnc1), Phospholamban (Pln), Fatty acid binding proteins 3 (Fabp3), Popeye domain containing 2 (Popdc2), and Tripartite Motif-containing Protein 63 (Trim63). miRNAs that target the hub genes were mainly involved in TGF-β and Wnt signaling pathways. GO BP enrichment analysis found these miRNAs were involved in the signaling of TGF-β and glucose homeostasis. Q-PCR results found the gene expressions of Pln, Fabp3, Trim63, Tnnc1, and Popdc2 were significantly increased in DCM. Our study identified five hub genes (Tnnc1, Pln, Fabp3, Popdc2, Trim63) whose associated ceRNA networks are responsible for the onset of DCM.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, there has been a growing trend toward active travel. However, many cities have not given sufficient attention to active transportation, resulting in inadequate safety measures for pedestrians and cyclists. This issue becomes particularly critical around hospitals, closely associated with COVID-19 and where traffic can be more intricate and hazardous. Hence, there is a pressing need for a quantitative assessment of the active travel environment surrounding hospitals to obtain a practical evaluation and devise improvement strategies. This study constructs an Extenics evaluation model to assess the safety, accessibility, traffic pressure, convenience, and comfort of the active travel environment near Xiangya Hospital. Subsequently, optimization strategies are proposed based on the evaluation outcomes. The evaluation results show high traffic pressure around the hospital during peak hours while the infrastructure is insufficient. A diversion strategy must be developed based on the evaluation findings to address safety concerns. Furthermore, issues such as inadequate non-motorized lanes and accessibility facilities in the area are identified. Correspondingly, improvement strategies tailored to the specific problems of each street are suggested based on the evaluation results. While this research focuses on urban hospitals, it aims to offer valuable insights into evaluating and enhancing active travel environments around large public buildings.

Heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) have caused serious environmental pollution and health risks. Although the past few years have witnessed the achievements of studies on environmental behavior of HMs, the related toxicity mechanisms, and pollution control, their relationship remains a mystery. Researchers generally focused on one topic independently without comprehensive considerations due to the knowledge gap between environmental science and human health. Indeed, the full life cycle control of HMs is crucial and should be reconsidered with the combination of the occurrence, transport, and fate of HMs in the environment. Therefore, we started by reviewing the environmental behaviors of HMs which are affected by a variety of natural factors as well as their physicochemical properties. Furthermore, the related toxicity mechanisms were discussed according to exposure route, toxicity mechanism, and adverse consequences. In addition, the current state-of-the-art of available technologies for pollution control of HMs wastewater and solid wastes were summarized. Finally, based on the research trend, we proposed that advanced in-operando characterizations will help us better understand the fundamental reaction mechanisms, and big data analysis approaches will aid in establishing the prediction model for risk management.

Nudging the adoption of agricultural green production technologies (AGPTs) by cotton farmers is a practical need to implement the national “green development” strategy. Based on the micro-survey data of 502 cotton farmers, this paper empirically analyzed the influence and driving mechanism of cotton farmers’ participation in cooperatives on their adoption of green production technology from the perspective of their inner cognition and external regulation by using the propensity score matching (PSM) model and the intermediary effect model. The study found that (1) the importance of agricultural green production technology to cotton farmers was in the order of soil testing and formula fertilization technology, green prevention and control technology, deep tillage technology, water-saving irrigation technology, new variety technology, and straw-returning technology. (2) Participation in cooperatives can significantly improve the adoption of agricultural green production technologies by cotton farmers, with an increase of about 27.16%, and the improvement effect on technology-intensive production links is pronounced. (3) By improving the inner cognition and external regulation of cotton farmers, cooperatives can enhance the green endogenous power of cotton farmers, improve environmental external constraints, and become an intermediary path to guide cotton farmers to adopt agricultural green production technology.

Assessing ecosystem risk is crucial to ecosystem management and to achieving the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C or 2.0 °C global warming targets, but the spatial pattern and drivers of ecosystem risk are highly controversial. By simulating China’s ecosystem water use efficiency using the Lund–Potsdam–Jena global vegetation model, the ecosystem risk at the eco-geographical and vegetation-type scales was assessed in this study to identify the regions at risk under global warming, and the impacts of the species richness (ASR) and micro-meteorological factors on the ecosystem risk were investigated in the identified regions using the structural equation model (SEM). Our results indicate that about 30.5% and 32.2% of the ecosystems in China will face risk under global warming targets of 1.5 °C and 2.0 °C, respectively. The ecosystem risk is spatially heterogeneous and biome-specific. The ecosystem risk will mainly occur in the mid-temperate humid/sub-humid region, warm temperate humid/sub-humid region, northern subtropical humid region, mid-subtropical humid region, and the Tibetan Plateau region in China, of which cropland, grassland, and deciduous broadleaf forests will account for 39%, 17%, and 14%, respectively. The results of the SEM analysis indicate that the micro-meteorological factors and ASR explain 48% of the variation in the ecosystem risk, and the micro-meteorological factors and ASR have similar but opposite influences on the ecosystem risk. For the ecosystems identified as at risk under global warming, the negative total effect of the micro-meteorological factors on the ecosystem risk is mainly due to the dominant role of the shortwave radiation in regulating the ecosystem risk; and the positive total effect of the ASR on the ecosystem risk indicates that the ecosystems with higher species richness may face more severe damage when the risk occurs. Therefore, we should carefully balance the effect of the ASR on the ecosystems’ abilities to adapt to changes and ecosystems’ abilities to recover from damage. Our results contribute to precise ecosystem management in China and provide evidence to support the idea that properly optimizing biodiversity can prevent and reduce the damage to ecosystems caused by global warming.

The high-altitude environment is characterized by hypobaric hypoxia, low temperatures, low humidity, and high radiation, which is a natural challenge for lowland residents entering. Previous studies have confirmed the acute and chronic effects of high altitude on the cardiovascular systems of lowlanders. Abnormal cardiovascular complications, including pulmonary edema, cardiac hypertrophy and pulmonary arterial hypertension were commonly explored. Effective evaluation of cardiovascular adaptive response in high altitude can provide a basis for early warning, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of altitude diseases. At present, post-translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins are a key step to regulate their biological functions and dynamic interactions with other molecules. This process is regulated by countless enzymes called “writer, reader, and eraser,” and the performance is precisely controlled. Mutations and abnormal expression of these enzymes or their substrates have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases associated with high altitude. Although PTMs play an important regulatory role in key processes such as oxidative stress, apoptosis, proliferation, and hypoxia response, little attention has been paid to abnormal cardiovascular response at high altitude. Here, we reviewed the roles of PTMs in driving abnormal cardiovascular complications at high altitude.

The effects of pulsed electric fields (PEF) and blanching pretreatments on frying kinetics, oil content, color, texture, acrylamide (AA) content, and microstructure have been investigated in this paper. The total PEF pretreatment duration was tPEF = 0.2 s with an intensity of E = 1 kV/cm; blanching was studied at 85 °C for 5 min. The results demonstrated that pretreatment significantly reduced the moisture ratio and oil content by 25% and 40.33%, respectively. The total color change ΔE value of the pretreated samples was lower than that of the untreated samples. In addition, pretreatment increased the hardness of the sample after frying, and the AA content in the fried samples pretreated with PEF + blanching was reduced by approximately 46.10% (638 μg/kg). Finally, fried sweet potato chips obtained by the combined pretreatment exhibited a smoother and flatter cross-sectional microstructure.

Lignocellulose, composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, holds immense promise as a renewable resource for the production of sustainable chemicals and fuels. Unlocking the full potential of lignocellulose requires efficient pretreatment strategies. In this comprehensive review, efforts were taken to survey the latest developments in polyoxometalates (POMs)-assisted pretreatment and conversion of lignocellulosic biomass. An outstanding finding highlighted in this review is that the deformation of the cellulose structure from I to II accompanied by the removal of xylan/lignin through the synergistic effect of ionic liquids (ILs) and POMs resulted in a significant increase in glucose yield and improved cellulose digestibility. Furthermore, successful integration of POMs with deep eutectic solvents (DES) or γ-valerolactone/water (GVL/water) systems has demonstrated efficient lignin removal, opening avenues for advanced biomass utilization. This review not only presents the key findings and novel approaches in POMs-based pretreatment but also addresses the current challenges and prospects for large-scale industrial implementation. By offering a comprehensive assessment of the progress in this field, this review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and industry professionals aiming to harness the potential of lignocellulosic biomass for sustainable chemical and fuel production.

BackgroundDue to seriously imbalanced distribution of follow-up clinics in China, routine in-office visits are erratically attended by many cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) patients. Meanwhile, remote monitoring is significantly underutilized. Novel tools to address the current predicament of routine in-office visits in China is urgently needed.ObjectivesTo assess the reliability and feasibility of cloud follow-up in CIED patients.MethodsA total of 325 CIED patients from 13 hospitals in Sichuan Province, China, were enrolled. Information on patients’ sociodemographic and basic clinical characteristics was collected. All devices were tested and programmed with 5G-cloud follow-up platform in a real-time manner. All patients were surveyed about their acceptance of and preferences regarding cloud follow-up compared to routine in-office visits.ResultsCompliance with routine in-office visits in this region was 60.6%. None of the patients were enrolled in remote monitoring services. Clinically important predictors of non-compliance were elderly age (≥75 years old), odds ratio (OR) 2.392 (95% confidence interval, 1.111–5.150); needing notification from a follow-up clinic, OR 2.518 (1.179–5.376); and being beyond 15 months post-implantation, OR 5.440 (2.563–11.543). All cloud follow-up sessions were performed safely and efficiently, without any adverse events. 292 (89.8%) patients preferred cloud follow-up for future device management.ConclusionCompliance with routine in-office visits in this region has much room for improvement. Cloud follow-up addresses the limitations of an imbalanced distribution of follow-up clinics and geographic barriers for in-office CIED evaluation. Thus, cloud follow-up provides a potential solution to the current predicament of routine in-office visits in China.

ObjectiveIn patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a major complication after mechanical thrombectomy (MT). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum magnesium levels and HT after MT.MethodsWe collected 199 cases of consecutive AIS that received MT due to acute anterior circulation occlusions in our institution between January 2017 and January 2020. Baseline serum magnesium was obtained from all patients on admission before MT. The patients were divided into two groups based on the occurrence of HT. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to investigate whether magnesium was an independent predictor of HT. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the curve (AUC) were determined.ResultsOf the 199 enrolled patients, 40 (20.1%) presented with HT, and 12 (6%) developed symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH). Patients with HT had lower serum magnesium levels compared to those without HT (0.76 [0.69–0.80] vs. 0.84 [0.80–0.90], p < 0.001). The multivariate logistic analysis showed that the serum magnesium level (odds ratio, [OR]: 0.000, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.000–0.001, p < 0.001) was significantly associated with the occurrence of HT. The ROC curve analysis revealed that the serum magnesium level could predict HT with an AUC of.820 (95% CI: 0.750–0.891 p < 0.001). Serum magnesium ≤ 0.80 mmol/L could predict HT with a sensitivity of 79.2% and a specificity of 70.0%. Of interest, the serum magnesium level was not associated with HT when the baseline of serum magnesium was higher than the cut-off value (0.80 mmol/L) in the subgroup analysis.ConclusionsLower baseline serum magnesium levels (

We recently discovered that coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is a potent oncolytic virus against KRAS mutant lung adenocarcinoma. Nevertheless, the evident toxicity restricts the use of wild-type (WT)-CVB3 for cancer therapy. The current study aims to engineer the CVB3 to decrease its toxicity and to extend our previous research to determine its safety and efficacy in treating TP53/RB1 mutant small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). A microRNA-modified CVB3 (miR-CVB3) was generated via inserting multiple copies of tumor-suppressive miR-145/miR-143 target sequences into the viral genome. In vitro experiments revealed that miR-CVB3 retained the ability to infect and lyse KRAS mutant lung adenocarcinoma and TP53/RB1-mutant SCLC cells, but with a markedly reduced cytotoxicity toward cardiomyocytes. In vivo study using a TP53/RB1-mutant SCLC xenograft model demonstrated that a single dose of miR-CVB3 via systemic administration resulted in a significant tumor regression. Most strikingly, mice treated with miR-CVB3 exhibited greatly attenuated cardiotoxicities and decreased viral titers compared to WT-CVB3-treated mice. Collectively, we generated a recombinant CVB3 that is powerful in destroying both KRAS mutant lung adenocarcinoma and TP53/RB1-mutant SCLC, with a negligible toxicity toward normal tissues. Future investigation is needed to address the issue of genome instability of miR-CVB3, which was observed in ~40% of mice after a prolonged treatment. Objective: To investigate single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) for assessing inflammation in the extraocular muscles (EOMs) and predicting the therapeutic efficacy of periocular glucocorticoid therapy (PGT) for Grave's ophthalmopathy (GO).Materials and Methods: A total of 412 eyes from 206 patients with GO referred for 99mTc-DTPA orbital SPECT/CT were enrolled. Fourteen age- and gender-matched healthy controls (28 eyes) were included. The thickness and uptake ratio (UR) of four EOMs were derived from SPECT/CT. Eighty-six eyes from patients with GO patients received PGT. Changes in SPECT/CT parameters were evaluated between the pre- and post-treatment.Results: 195 eyes and 217 eyes were classified as active and inactive stages by clinical activity score (CAS). Values of the thickness and UR of each EOM, Tmax, and Umax were all significantly higher in the active GO than in the inactive GO and controls (p < 0.01). Among the 86 eyes (48 GO patients) included in the efficacy analysis, 56 eyes and 30 eyes were classified as responders and non-responders. Values of thicknesses and UR of each EOM, the maximum thickness (Tmax), and the maximum UR (Umax) all dropped following PGT in the responders (p < 0.01). Logistic regression analysis identified the Umax as an independent predictor for the responders (p < 0.01). Moreover, the Umax demonstrated incremental predictive value over clinical characters and CAS, as evidenced by the improved area under the curve (0.85 vs. 0.78) and global chi-square (34.12 vs. 18.1).Conclusion:99mTc-DTPA SPECT/CT has the potential to assess inflammatory activity by detecting the involvement of EOMs in GO. Pre-treatment UR provides independent and incremental values for the prediction of PGT treatment response.

In the context of the increasing frequency of natural disasters caused by climate change in recent years, rational territorial spatial planning must pay attention to production–living–ecological (PLE) risks under climate change scenarios. In this study, a method synthesizing the Box–Cox transformation and area weighted averaging is established for characterizing the PLE risks in China’s provinces, which are divided into three zones to cope with PLE risks. Further, targeted strategies from the perspective of the disaster-induced factors and disaster-affected objects are explored for the regions within the different zones. The results show that the regions with a high production risk are mainly distributed in Guangdong, Henan, and Shandong, with an index between 0.80 and 1.00; the regions with a high living risk are concentrated in Jiangsu, Anhui, Guangdong, and Hainan, with an index exceeding 0.72; and the regions with a high ecological risk are concentrated in Guangxi, Ningxia, and Yunnan, with an index exceeding 0.50. The overall PLE risk is high along the southeastern coast, intermediate in central and western China, and low on the Tibetan Plateau. From the A to C zones, the number of risk types and intensity of risks requiring attention gradually decrease. For the category A zone, recommended measures include the construction of disaster risk monitoring and early warning systems for coastal cities and major grain-producing regions, the development of urban ecological protection zones, and the adjustment of economic and energy structures, etc. Production and living risks are central to the category B zone, while ecological and production risks are central to the category C zone. This study can provide theoretical support for China’s scientific development of land planning and the realization of a beautiful China.

KRAS mutant (KRASmut) lung adenocarcinoma is a refractory cancer without available targeted therapy. The current study explored the possibility to develop coxsackievirus type B3 (CVB3) as an oncolytic agent for the treatment of KRASmut lung adenocarcinoma. In cultured cells, we discovered that CVB3 selectively infects and lyses KRASmut lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549, H2030, and H23), while sparing normal lung epithelial cells (primary, BEAS2B, HPL1D, and 1HAEo) and EGFRmut lung adenocarcinoma cells (HCC4006, PC9, H3255, and H1975). Using stable cells expressing a single driver mutation of either KRASG12V or EGFRL858R in normal lung epithelial cells (HPL1D), we further showed that CVB3 specifically kills HPL1D-KRASG12V cells with minimal harm to HPL1D-EGFRL858R and control cells. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that aberrant activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and compromised type I interferon immune response in KRASmut lung adenocarcinoma cells serve as key factors contributing to the sensitivity to CVB3-induced cytotoxicity. Lastly, we conducted in vivo xenograft studies using two immunocompromised mouse models. Our results revealed that intratumoral injection of CVB3 results in a marked tumor regression of KRASmut lung adenocarcinoma in both non-obese diabetic (NOD) severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) gamma (NSG) and NOD-SCID xenograft models. Together, our findings suggest that CVB3 is an excellent candidate to be further developed as a targeted therapy for KRASmut lung adenocarcinoma. Abstract Background Thyroid cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies in endocrine system. Further understanding and revealing the molecular mechanism underlying thyroid cancer are indispensable for the development of effective diagnosis and treatments. In the present study, we attempted to provide novel basis for targeted therapy for thyroid cancer from the aspect of lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA interaction. Methods The expression and cellular function of XIST (X-inactive specific transcript) was determined. miRNAs which may be direct targets of XIST were screened for from online GEO database and miR-34a was selected. Next, the predicted binding between XIST and miR-34a, and the dynamic effect of XIST and miR-34a on downstream MET (hepatocyte growth factor receptor)-PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase)-AKT (α-serine/threonine-protein kinase) signaling was evaluated. Results XIST was significantly up-regulated in thyroid cancer tissues and cell lines; XIST knockdown suppressed the cell proliferation in vivo and the tumor growth in vitro. Based on online database and online tool prediction results, miR-34a was underexpressed in thyroid cancer and might be a direct target of XIST. Herein, we confirmed the negative interaction between XIST and miR-34a; moreover, XIST knockdown could reduce the protein levels of MET, a downstream target of miR-34a, and the phosphorylation of PI3K and AKT. In thyroid cancer tissues, MET mRNA and protein levels of MET were up-regulated; MET was positively correlated with XIST while negatively correlated with miR-34a, further confirming that XIST serves as a ceRNA for miR-34a through sponging miR-34a, competing with MET for miR-34a binding, and finally modulating thyroid cancer cell proliferation and tumor growth. Conclusion In the present study, we provided novel experimental basis for targeted therapy for thyroid cancer from the aspect of lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA interaction.

Autophagy is a host machinery that controls cellular health. Dysfunction of autophagy is responsible for the pathogenesis of many human diseases that include atherosclerosis obliterans (ASO). Physiologically, host autophagy removes aging organelles and delays the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. However, in ischemia event, dysregulated autophagy can be induced to trigger autosis, leading to an inevitable cellular death. Grb2-associated binder 1 (GAB1) is a docking/scaffolding adaptor protein that regulates many cell processes including autophagy. Our study first reported that the protein expression of GAB1 significantly decreased in ASO. Mechanically, our results showed that inhibition of Akt (protein kinase B), the upstream of mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin), significantly enhanced autophagy by demonstrating the downregulation of p62/Sequestosome 1 expression and the upregulation of the ratio of LC3II/LC3I. Conversely, we found that the inhibition of ERK1/2 (extracellular signal-regulated kinases1/2), p38, and JNK (c-Jun N-terminal kinase) signaling pathway, respectively, significantly inhibited autophagy by demonstrating the upregulation of p62 expression and the downregulation of the ratio of LC3II/LC3I. Further, we demonstrated that knockdown of GAB1 significantly increased autophagy in HUVECs (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) via activation of MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) pathways that include ERK1/2, p38, and JNK. Moreover, we found that knockdown of GAB1 profoundly inhibited HUVEC proliferation, migration, and tube formation. Taken together, this study first suggests that GAB1 is a key regulator of autophagy in HUVECs. Targeting GAB1 may serve as a potential strategy for the atherosclerosis treatment.

Due to its excellent performance and high design freedom, the lattice structure has shown excellent capabilities and considerable potential in aerospace and other fields. Inspired by the bamboo structure, a lattice cell configuration namely BCC4IZ is designed and a lattice alternative layout is obtained. Then, a design and modeling method for non-uniform lattice structures is proposed. Four designs of the landing footpad with different kinds of lattice cells are developed. A series of dynamic explicit finite element simulations were conducted to evaluate and compare the energy absorption and capacity of resisting impact deformation performance of different designs. The results show that the combination of the bionic design and the lattice structure can effectively improve the performance of the lattice-filled footpad. This study proves the feasibility and potential of application for bionic design in lattice structure.

Summary: Picornaviruses have evolved to hijack host cellular machinery, including the autophagic pathway. However, the mechanisms remain largely unclear. We use coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) as a model organism to explore the possible role of picornavirus subversion of the autophagic pathway in viral infection. Our in vivo and in vitro experiments demonstrate that CVB3 infection causes a significant, albeit incomplete, inhibition of autophagic flux by limiting the fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes and/or late endosomes. Furthermore, we show that CVB3 specifically targets SNARE protein SNAP29 and adaptor protein PLEKHM1, two critical proteins known to regulate autophagosome fusion, for cleavage through the catalytic activity of viral proteinase 3C, ultimately impairing the formation of SNARE complexes. Finally, we demonstrate that loss of SNAP29/PLEKHM1 inhibits autophagic flux, resulting in increased viral replication. Collectively, our study reveals a mechanism that supports an emerging model whereby CVB3 hijacks the autophagic machinery to facilitate its own propagation. : Mohamud et al. report that coxsackievirus limits autophagosome fusion with lysosomes and/or late endosomes through viral proteinase 3C-mediated cleavage of SNAP29 and PLEKHM1. This leads to the accumulation of autophagosomes that favor viral replication by providing additional membrane scaffolds. This paper proposes a method to map the biometric model to the lattice structure. Taking leaf veins as bionic objects, they are used to generate a bionic design with a gradient lattice structure to improve the performance of a heat exchanger. In order to achieve the above goals, this article also proposes a leaf vein model and a mapping method that combine the leaf vein model with the lattice structure. A series of transient thermal finite element simulations was conducted to evaluate and compare the heat dissipation performance of different designs. The analysis results show that the combination of the bionic design and the lattice structure effectively improves the heat dissipation performance of the lattice structure heat exchanger. The results indicate that the application of bionic design in lattice structure design has feasibility and predictable potential.

Gliomas arise in the glial cells of the brain or spine and are the most prevalent and devastating type of brain tumors. Studies of tumor immunology have established the importance of the tumor micro-environment as a driver of oncogenesis. Inflammatory mediators such as IL-1β and IL-18 released by monocytes regulate transcriptional networks that are required for malignant cell growth. Berberine is a natural botanical alkaloid that is widely found in the Berberis species. Although it has been widely used as an anti-diarrheal treatment in North America for several decades, our study is the first to investigate berberine as an anti-tumor agent in glioma cells. In this study, we demonstrate that berberine significantly inhibits inflammatory cytokine Caspase-1 activation via ERK1/2 signaling and subsequent production of IL-1β and IL-18 by glioma cells. Moreover, we found that berberine treatment led to decreased motility and subsequently cell death in U251 and U87 cells. In addition, our study is the first to indicate that berberine can reverse the process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, a marker of tumor invasion. Taken together, our work supports berberine as a putative anti-tumor agent targeting glioma cells.

A wavelength tunable V-cavity laser (VCL) employing integrated thin-film heaters is reported. The laser is fabricated by a simple process with no grating or band-gap engineering. A single-electrode-controlled wavelength tuning of 32 channels is achieved by experiment, with a tuning efficiency of 0.13 nm/mW, which is about 1.5 times higher than that of the current injection based thermal tuning. By combining four single-electrode controlled tunings with different bias currents, we obtain 51 wavelength channels covering 43 nm. Well-open eye diagrams with extinction ratios above 6.6 dB are obtained in all channels under direct modulation at 2.5 Gbps. The power penalty over a 25-km fiber transmission is less than 0.3 dB. Clearly open eye diagrams with bit error rates (BERs) below 10-12 are also obtained at 5 and 8.5 Gbps after a 10-km single-mode fiber transmission.

Central Asia (CA) is a continental region that is sensitive to water conditions. Hence, drought has one of the primary effects on the vegetation activities in CA and could vary with climate change. However, it is still unclear how the drought vulnerability of vegetation differs among vegetation types and varies with drought scales in CA. Therefore, this paper studied the drought vulnerability of vegetation in CA from 1982–2015. Droughts were detected by using the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), and the vegetation activities were represented by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Only the areas with no change in vegetation types were analyzed, in order to avoid interference with changes in land use. Results showed that both the duration and intensity of droughts were higher in the central, southwestern, and northeastern CA. The growing season (April–October) NDVI decreased by −0.0095 ± 0.0065 per decade in response to drying trends of 0.21 ± 0.22 unit aridity index per decade in these drought-concentrated regions. Forests and savannas/woody savannas were more vulnerable to drought from July–September, and their vulnerabilities were higher to droughts with longer time scales. Shrublands and grasslands were more vulnerable to drought from April–May and May–September, respectively, and the vulnerabilities during these months were higher for the droughts at 6–12 months scales. Twelve months was the optimal (most vulnerable) drought scale for the shrublands and grasslands and the secondary drought scale for the savannas/woody savannas. Further analysis of the vulnerability of vegetation to 12 months drought found that it generally increased with the increase of the drought magnitude (duration or intensity) to some peak values and then decreased. However, the vulnerability of forests and savannas/woody savannas increased with the drought intensity. Results would help for the drought risk assessment of vegetation in CA.

An 870-nm-band wavelength tunable edge-emitting semiconductor laser based on V-coupled cavities in a GaAs/AlGaAs material system is presented. It does not involve any grating or epitaxial regrowth. Using a single electrode control, 31-channel wavelength tuning with a channel spacing of about 0.38 nm is achieved, with a tuning range of 11.4 nm. By additionally varying the temperature from 8°C to 50°C, wavelength tuning of 60 channels over 22.4 nm is demonstrated. At lower tuning current and with a temperature variation of 18°C, wavelength switching by carrier plasma effect is achieved with a tuning range of 8.2 nm. The simple and compact 870-nm-band edge-emitting tunable laser is suitable for multifunctional photonic integration for optical interconnect and biomedical applications.
