Abstract

Humanoid robots, intelligent machines resembling the human body in shape and functions, cannot only replace humans to complete services and dangerous tasks but also deepen the own understanding of the human body in the mimicking process. Nowadays, attaching a large number of sensors to obtain more sensory information and efficient computation is the development trend for humanoid robots. Nevertheless, due to the constraints of von Neumann‐based structures, humanoid robots are facing multiple challenges, including tremendous energy consumption, latency bottlenecks, and the lack of bionic properties. Memristors, featured with high similarity to the biological elements, play an important role in mimicking the biological nervous system. The memristor‐based nervous system allows humanoid robots to obtain high energy efficiency and bionic sensing properties, which are similar properties to the biological nervous system. Herein, this article first reviews the biological nervous system and memristor‐based nervous system thoroughly, including the structures and also the functions. The applications of memristor‐based nervous systems are introduced, the difficulties that need to be overcome are put forward, and future development prospects are also discussed. This review can hopefully provide an evolutionary perspective on humanoid robots and memristor‐based nervous systems.

2. Nickel Foam Promotes Syntrophic Metabolism of Propionate and Butyrate in Anaerobic Digestion

Abstract

Enhanced interspecies electron transfer (IET) among symbiotic microorganisms is an effective method to increase the rate of methane (CH4) production in anaerobic digestion. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), which does not involve dissolved redox media, is considered an alternative and superior method to enhance methane production by interspecific hydrogen (H2) transfer (IHT). In this study, nickel foam was built into a semicontinuous anaerobic reactor to investigate its effect on the metabolism of propionate and butyrate. Both increased the average yield of CH4 in anaerobic digestion by 18.1 and 15.9%, respectively. Analysis of bacterial and archaeal communities showed that the addition of nickel foam could increase the relative abundance of microbial communities involved in DIET and could increase the diversity of microorganisms in the reactor. Moreover, the anaerobic digestion performance of the nickel foam reactor was good at high hydrogen partial pressure.

3. New ternary deep eutectic solvents for effective wheat straw deconstruction into its high-value utilization under near-neutral conditions

Abstract

In order to extract lignin, a novel near-neutral deep eutectic solvent (DES) was developed to treat wheat straw which facilitated its subsequent enzymatic glycation. The DES, whose in situ complexation promotes lignin depolymerization, was composed of choline chloride (ChCl), boric acid (BA), and polyethylene glycol-200 (PEG-200). Our results showed that this kind of DES could dissolve a large amount of lignin and hemicellulose yet retained cellulose well. Under optimum conditions (DES ratio of 1 : 1 : 1.5, 120 °C, 4 h), the proportions of lignin and hemicellulose removed amounted to 88.39% and 84.38%, respectively, with enzymatic digestibility reaching 59.3% in the subsequent enzymatic saccharification with a limited timeframe (5 days) and low enzyme load (30 FPU g−1). The results also demonstrated that lignin's removal rate was positively correlated with the amount of BA used in the DES. The 2D-HSQC NMR, FTIR and TG analyses showed the regenerated lignin to be a typical H–G–S type retaining its intact structure (e.g., β-O-4, β-β, β-5, etc.), whose carbon chain backbone is stable. GPC analysis revealed that this extracted lignin had low molecular weight and a narrower distribution range. Density functional theory showed that BA could bond with –OH similar to Cl−, and it occupied more effective sites than Cl− to break the hydrogen-bonding network between lignin and cellulose. Importantly, the DES can be used multiple times without significantly reducing its efficiency, and its structure and properties remain virtually unchanged throughout the use cycle.

Abstract

Background: Results from retrospective studies suggest that use of neuromuscular blocking agents during general anaesthesia might be linked to postoperative pulmonary complications. We therefore aimed to assess whether the use of neuromuscular blocking agents is associated with postoperative pulmonary complications. Methods: We did a multicentre, prospective observational cohort study. Patients were recruited from 211 hospitals in 28 European countries. We included patients (aged ≥18 years) who received general anaesthesia for any in-hospital procedure except cardiac surgery. Patient characteristics, surgical and anaesthetic details, and chart review at discharge were prospectively collected over 2 weeks. Additionally, each patient underwent postoperative physical examination within 3 days of surgery to check for adverse pulmonary events. The study outcome was the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications from the end of surgery up to postoperative day 28. Logistic regression analyses were adjusted for surgical factors and patients' preoperative physical status, providing adjusted odds ratios (ORadj) and adjusted absolute risk reduction (ARRadj). This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01865513. Findings: Between June 16, 2014, and April 29, 2015, data from 22 803 patients were collected. The use of neuromuscular blocking agents was associated with an increased incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications in patients who had undergone general anaesthesia (1658 [7·6%] of 21 694); ORadj 1·86, 95% CI 1·53–2·26; ARRadj −4·4%, 95% CI −5·5 to −3·2). Only 2·3% of high-risk surgical patients and those with adverse respiratory profiles were anaesthetised without neuromuscular blocking agents. The use of neuromuscular monitoring (ORadj 1·31, 95% CI 1·15–1·49; ARRadj −2·6%, 95% CI −3·9 to −1·4) and the administration of reversal agents (1·23, 1·07–1·41; −1·9%, −3·2 to −0·7) were not associated with a decreased risk of postoperative pulmonary

Abstract

In order to develop a self-lubricating coating with long life and high reliability suitable for harsh working conditions, the composite coating with NiCoCrAlYTa as matrix phase, Ag as lubricant phase and Mo as the reinforcing phase were prepared by high-velocity oxy-fuel spraying（HVOF）technology. The high-low temperature cycling tribological properties of the composite coating were investigated at 25 ℃ and 800 ℃. The morphology features, chemical composition and phase structure of the worn surface were studied to reveal the interaction between different elements in the friction process and physicochemical nature of friction interface. In addition, the multi-cycles adaptive lubrication mechanism under the alternating environment of high and low temperature was explored as well. The results show that the composite coating is dense and uniform, and has better mechanical properties. The phases of the composite coating mainly contain γ-Ni, β-NiAl, γ'-Ni3Al, Ag and Mo. The β-Ag2MoO4 layer-like lubricant generated on the surface can greatly improve the friction and wear performance of the composite coating at high temperature. Under the condition of multi-cycles, the friction coefficient of subsequent cycle of the composite coating is increased compared with the first cycle, but the wear rate of the composite coating at room temperature is decreased. This is caused by the interaction between the lubricating phase of β-Ag2MoO4 and the hard phases of Al2O3 and MoO3 with the action of frictional shear force.

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate for the first time the existence of distinguishable contributions to hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) intensities from Ag nanoparticles arising from electric-dipole and electric-quadrupole plasmon resonances at the emitted wavelength. We show that these results can be successfully modeled using an electromagnetic theory of HRS which assumes a surface-induced nonlinear susceptibility. In addition, we show that simple angular distribution measurements may be used to determine the relative sizes of the dipole and quadrupole contributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The ancient aeolian sand has been regarded as an indicator for the formation and evolution of a desert in the past. Kumtagh Desert is located at the northern fringe of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The first integrated scientific investigation to the desert was carried out during the period of 2004-2006. Kumtagh Desert is an ideal natural model for studying the formation and evolution of the desert because the Quaternary strata containing ancient aeolian sands are widely distributed. The integrated field investigation and studies on sedimentary, chronology and palynology of typical profiles named Suosuo gully, Xiaoquan gully and gravel body with ancient aeolian sand layers showed that Kumtagh Desert was probably formed as early as 2,097.7 +/- 314.7 ka BP. During the period of 386.9 +/- 58.0 ka BP to 285.9 +/- 42.9 ka BP, the desert largely expanded and formed its modern distribution pattern. The desert was originally developed in the southwest, subsequently, expanded to the north and northeast. The sedimentary fades of Suosuo gully profile revealed that the desert experienced at least 19 cycles of advance and inverse processes of desertification with an average period of 110 ka in the Quaternary. The neotectonic movements played an important role in the formation, development and geomorphology of the desert. On one hand, the movements caused the formation of intermontane fault basin, which was further developed towards the closed drought basin, and caused the formation of natural environment. On the other hand, under the control of surrounding faults, the unique broom-shaped desert landscape was formed, and the gullies and sand ridges in this region experienced an abrupt directional change from north by west to north by east at the location of 39 degrees 45'-39 degrees 55'N. The unique landscape of gravel body that occurred widely in the northern desert was formed after 285.9 +/- 42.9 ka BR The results in this paper provide the scientific basis for studying the formation age and evolutionary process under the dry climate and environment in the northwestern China, and the uplifting of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as well as its responses to the global climate changes.

Abstract

Climate change will significantly affect agricultural production in China. The combination of the integral regression model and the latest climate projection may well assess the impact of future climate change on crop yield. In this paper, the correlation model of maize yield and meteorological factors was firstly established for different provinces in China by using the integral regression method, then the impact of climate change in the next 40 years on China's maize production was evaluated combined the latest climate prediction with the reason be ing analyzed. The results showed that if the current speeds of maize variety improvement and science and technology development were constant, maize yield in China would be mainly in an increasing trend of reduction with time in the next 40 years in a range generally within 5%. Under A2 climate change scenario, the region with the most reduction of maize yield would be the Northeast except during 2021-2030, and the reduction would be generally in the range of 2.3%-4.2%. Maize yield reduction would be also high in the Northwest, Southwest and middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River after 2031. Under B2 scenario, the reduction of 5.3% in the Northeast in 2031-2040 would be the greatest across all regions. Other regions with considerable maize yield reduction would be mainly in the Northwest and the Southwest. Reduction in maize yield in North China would be small, generally within 2%, under any scenarios, and that in South China would be almost unchanged. The reduction of maize yield in most regions would be greater under A2 scenario than under B2 scenario except for the period of 2021-2030. The effect of the ten day precipitation on maize yield in northern China would be almost positive. However, the effect of ten day average temperature on yield of maize in all regions would be generally negative. The main reason of maize yield reduction was temperature increase in most provinces but precipitation decrease in a few provinces. Assessments of the future change of maize yield in China based on the different methods were not consistent. Further evaluation needs to consider the change of maize variety and scientific and technological progress, and to enhance the reliability of evaluation models.

Abstract

Based on variations of the annual mean temperature and precipitation analyzed using ob- servation data in Guyuan of Ningxia, the effects of climate change on the local flax developmental process and yield were investigated. The results showed that the annual mean temperature had an increasing trend (0.3 °C · (10 a)-1) and the annual precipitation had a decreasing trend (-20 mm · (10 a) -1) from 1957 to 2012. While the increasing trend of mean temperature during growing season of flax was more obviously than that of the annual temperature, the decreasing trend of precipitation during growing season was similar to that of annual precipitation. With temperature increasing and precipitation decreasing, the flax development rate was accelerated, resulting in the reduced growing period. Seedling stage was advanced 0.7 d with 1 °C increase in temperature during the period from sowing to seedling emergence. The duration from seedling emergence to two pairs of needles was shortened by 0.8 d with 1 °C increase in temperature and 0.1 d with 1 mm decrease in precipitation. Maturity stage was advanced 1.8 d with 1 °C increase in temperature and 0.1 d with 1 mm decrease in precipitation during the period from technical maturity to maturity. The flax development was accelerated because of temperature increasing and precipitation decreasing in the vegetative growth phase, which was one of the main causes of flax yield reduction year by year. Meanwhile, flower bud differentiation and pollination of flax were influenced by temperature increasing in the reproductive growth phase, which would affect the number of capsules and the seed setting rate per plant and lead to the decrease of flax yield. Therefore, adjusting plant structure and enlarging the planting area of late or middle-late variety were the important measures to reduce the effects of climate change on local flax production.

Abstract Supersymmetric Sp(k) quantum chromodynamics with 8 supercharges in space-time dimensions 3 to 6 can be realised by two different Type II brane configurations in the presence of orientifolds. Consequently, two types of magnetic quivers describe the Higgs branch of the Sp(k) SQCD theory. This is a salient example of a general phenomenon: a given hyper-Kähler Higgs branch may admit several magnetic quiver constructions. It is then natural to wonder if these different magnetic quivers, which are described by 3d N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 theories, are dual theories. In this work, the unitary and orthosymplectic magnetic quiver theories are subjected to a variety of tests, providing evidence that they are IR dual to each other. For this, sphere partition function and supersymmetric indices are compared. Also, we study half BPS line defects and find interesting regularities from the viewpoints of exact results, brane configurations, and 1-form symmetry.

Abstract

Based on the daily data under B2 climate scenario (2011-2050) and baseline climate condition (1961-1990) extracted from the regional climate model PRECIS, and by using the Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ) model, a prediction was conducted on the possible spatiotemporal changes of the climatic potential productivity of the two crops in the Huanghuaihai Plain in 2011-2050. Under baseline climate condition, the climatic potential productivities of winter wheat and summer maize presented a regional differentiation, i.e., higher in southeast and lower in northwest regions, and higher along coast and lower in inland at the same latitudes, and fluctuated within the ranges of 3893-11000 kg x hm(-2) and 5908-12000 kg x hm(-2), respectively. Under B2 climate scenario, the climatic potential productivity of winter wheat and summer maize would have a greater inter-annual change, due to the different matching degrees of light, temperature and water during the growth periods of the crops. The climatic potential productivity of winter wheat in 2011-2030 and summer maize in 2021-2040 would have an obvious increase, with great potential for development. Under the conditions of maintaining the present production, the climatic potential productivity of winter wheat in 2011-2050 would present an overall regional differentiation of reverse change in southeast and northwest regions and the same change in coastal and inland areas, whereas the climatic potential productivity of summer maize in 2011-2050 would have little regional differentiation.

Abstract

Based on the 2011-2050 A2 climate scenario derived from the regional climate model PRECIS and the daily data of 1961-1990 baseline climate condition, this paper analyzed the possible changes of the agricultural thermal resources in China from 2011 to 2050. Comparing with the baseline climate condition in 1961-1990, the average frost-free periods in most parts of China in 2011-2050 under A2 climate scenario would have an obvious extension, mainly manifested in the advance of last frost date and the postpone of first frost date. The days with the daily average temperature stably passing 0 degrees C would also prolong significantly, and extend from 1 day to 14 days in most parts of the country. Especially from 2041 to 2050, the days with the daily average temperature stably passing 0 degrees C in most regions of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, and western and southwestern regions of Gansu and Xinjiang could be extended by 49 days. Theor = 0 degrees C accumulated temperatures in most parts of the country would have increasing trends. In order to meet the future change trend of our agricultural thermal resources and to realize the sustainable development of agriculture in China, some countermeasures should be formulated, e.g., further adjusting agricultural cropping system, optimizing agricultural production distribution, developing biotechnology, and so on.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The inability to diagnose early rejection of an islet allograft has previously proved to be a major impediment to progress in clinical islet transplantation. The need to detect early rejection will become even more relevant as new tolerance-inducing protocols are evaluated in the clinic. We explored three novel approaches toward development of early diagnostic markers of islet rejection after islet allotransplantation. METHODS: (a) Canine islet allograft transplant recipients were immunosuppressed for 1 month, then therapy was withdrawn. Serum glutamic acid decarboxylase antigen (GAD65), an endogenous islet protein, was monitored daily with a CO2 release assay. (b) Rodent islets were genetically engineered to express a unique foreign protein (beta-galactosidase) by using adenoviral vectors, and after allograft transplantation, the viral-specific protein was measured in serum using optical luminescence. (c) Rodents receiving islet allografts were immunosuppressed temporarily, and daily glucose tolerance tests were followed until graft failure occurred. RESULTS: (a) Although serum monitoring of GAD65 antigen demonstrated elevated levels preceding loss of graft function in preliminary studies, the effect was not reproducible in all animals. (b) Genetically engineered rodent islets demonstrated normal insulin kinetics in vitro (insulin stimulation index 2.57+/-0.2 vs. 2.95+/-0.3 for control islets, P=ns), and purified viral protein products had a stable half-life of 8 hr in vivo. After islet allotransplantation, there were two peak elevations in serum viral proteins, confirming that an intra-islet "sentinel signal" could be detected serologically during acute rejection. There was no lead-time ahead of hyperglycemia, however. (c) Daily sequential intravenous glucose tolerance (IVGT) tests demonstrated evidence of allograft dysfunction (decline in KG) with a 2-day lead time to hyperglycemia (2.58+/-0.3 vs. 1.63+/-0.2%/min, respectively, P

Abstract

Ceramics production in the country has increased rapidly to meet domestic and export demand. Production and export figures are presented for sanitaryware, tableware and ceramic tiles for the years 2000-2006. The location of deposits and production of chamotte, mullite, ball clay, wollastonite, feldspar, nepheline syenite, talc, boron and zircon are reviewed. With the exception of zircon, resources should be able to meet domestic demand, and supplies are increasingly able to match the specifications for high-quality ceramic products. The export of high- quality ceramic raw materials is expected to decline., Ceramics production in the country has increased rapidly to meet domestic and export demand. Abstract

Starting from the results obtained in the framework of the LAA Project 2B, we propose a continuation of the R&D on lead/scintillating fibres calorimetry ("spaghetti calorimetry"), including further tests on the old calorimeter prototypes and the construction and testing of new prototypes. The main results we pursue concern the performances of a projective calorimeter built with new, cheaper techniques and the radiation hardness of the scintillating fibres; the optimization of a preshower detector system is also studied.

We report on a study to determine the effect of waveguide sidewall roughness on quantum cascade (QC) laser performance using two two-wavelength heterogeneous QC laser structures, one with emission wavelengths of 7.0μm∕11.2μm, and the other with 8.7μm∕12.0μm. For the range of roughness standard deviation values from about 0.4to1.0μm, for which all four QC lasers were operating, the threshold current density increases by 12%–15% and the slope efficiency decreases by 30%–70% with stronger performance degradation for the shorter wavelength lasers, which is in agreement with a model based on Rayleigh scattering.
