Large language models (LLMs) can be abused at scale to create non-factual content and spread disinformation. Detecting LLM-generated content is essential to mitigate these risks, but current classifiers often fail to generalize in open-world contexts. Prior work shows that LLMs tend to rewrite LLM-generated content less frequently, which can be used for detection and naturally generalizes to unforeseen data. However, we find that the rewriting edit distance between human and LLM content can be indistinguishable across domains, leading to detection failures. We propose training an LLM to rewrite input text, producing minimal edits for LLM-generated content and more edits for human-written text, deriving a distinguishable and generalizable edit distance difference across different domains. Experiments on text from 21 independent domains and three popular LLMs (e.g., GPT-4o, Gemini, and Llama-3) show that our classifier outperforms the state-of-the-art zero-shot classifier by up to 20.6% on AUROC score and the rewriting classifier by 9.2% on F1 score. Our work suggests that LLM can effectively detect machine-generated text if they are trained properly.

Despite the proliferation of wearable health trackers and the importance of sleep and exercise to health, deriving actionable personalized insights from wearable data remains a challenge because doing so requires non-trivial open-ended analysis of these data. The recent rise of large language model (LLM) agents, which can use tools to reason about and interact with the world, presents a promising opportunity to enable such personalized analysis at scale. Yet, the application of LLM agents in analyzing personal health is still largely untapped. In this paper, we introduce the Personal Health Insights Agent (PHIA), an agent system that leverages state-of-the-art code generation and information retrieval tools to analyze and interpret behavioral health data from wearables. We curate two benchmark question-answering datasets of over 4000 health insights questions. Based on 650 hours of human and expert evaluation we find that PHIA can accurately address over 84% of factual numerical questions and more than 83% of crowd-sourced open-ended questions. This work has implications for advancing behavioral health across the population, potentially enabling individuals to interpret their own wearable data, and paving the way for a new era of accessible, personalized wellness regimens that are informed by data-driven insights., Comment: 38 pages

As human-machine interaction continues to evolve, the capacity for environmental perception is becoming increasingly crucial. Integrating the two most common types of sensory data, images, and point clouds, can enhance detection accuracy. Currently, there is no existing model capable of detecting an object's position in both point clouds and images while also determining their corresponding relationship. This information is invaluable for human-machine interactions, offering new possibilities for their enhancement. In light of this, this paper introduces an end-to-end Consistency Object Detection (COD) algorithm framework that requires only a single forward inference to simultaneously obtain an object's position in both point clouds and images and establish their correlation. Furthermore, to assess the accuracy of the object correlation between point clouds and images, this paper proposes a new evaluation metric, Consistency Precision (CP). To verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework, an extensive set of experiments has been conducted on the KITTI and DAIR-V2X datasets. The study also explored how the proposed consistency detection method performs on images when the calibration parameters between images and point clouds are disturbed, compared to existing post-processing methods. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits excellent detection performance and robustness, achieving end-to-end consistency detection. This paper reviews the NTIRE 2024 low light image enhancement challenge, highlighting the proposed solutions and results. The aim of this challenge is to discover an effective network design or solution capable of generating brighter, clearer, and visually appealing results when dealing with a variety of conditions, including ultra-high resolution (4K and beyond), non-uniform illumination, backlighting, extreme darkness, and night scenes. A notable total of 428 participants registered for the challenge, with 22 teams ultimately making valid submissions. Existing image restoration approaches typically employ extensive networks specifically trained for designated degradations. Despite being effective, such methods inevitably entail considerable storage costs and computational overheads due to the reliance on task-specific networks. In this work, we go beyond this well-established framework and exploit the inherent commonalities among image restoration tasks. The primary objective is to identify components that are shareable across restoration tasks and augment the shared components with modules specifically trained for individual tasks. Towards this goal, we propose AdaIR, a novel framework that enables low storage cost and efficient training without sacrificing performance. Specifically, a generic restoration network is first constructed through self-supervised pre-training using synthetic degradations. Subsequent to the pre-training phase, adapters are trained to adapt the pre-trained network to specific degradations. AdaIR requires solely the training of lightweight, task-specific modules, ensuring a more efficient storage and training regimen. We have conducted extensive experiments to validate the effectiveness of AdaIR and analyze the influence of the pre-training strategy on discovering shareable components. Extensive experimental results show that AdaIR achieves outstanding results on multi-task restoration while utilizing significantly fewer parameters (1.9 MB) and less training time (7 hours) for each restoration task. This paper reviews the NTIRE 2024 challenge on image super-resolution ($\times$4), highlighting the solutions proposed and the outcomes obtained. The challenge involves generating corresponding high-resolution (HR) images, magnified by a factor of four, from low-resolution (LR) inputs using prior information. The LR images originate from bicubic downsampling degradation. The aim of the challenge is to obtain designs/solutions with the most advanced SR performance, with no constraints on computational resources (e.g., model size and FLOPs) or training data. The track of this challenge assesses performance with the PSNR metric on the DIV2K testing dataset. The competition attracted 199 registrants, with 20 teams submitting valid entries. Flow-based super-resolution (SR) models have demonstrated astonishing capabilities in generating high-quality images. However, these methods encounter several challenges during image generation, such as grid artifacts, exploding inverses, and suboptimal results due to a fixed sampling temperature. To overcome these issues, this work introduces a conditional learned prior to the inference phase of a flow-based SR model. This prior is a latent code predicted by our proposed latent module conditioned on the low-resolution image, which is then transformed by the flow model into an SR image. Our framework is designed to seamlessly integrate with any contemporary flow-based SR model without modifying its architecture or pre-trained weights. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed framework through extensive experiments and ablation analyses. The proposed framework successfully addresses all the inherent issues in flow-based SR models and enhances their performance in various SR scenarios. We systematically study the mass spectra and their two-body hadronic decays of the beauty-charm meson family considering the coupled channel effects. Our results can good explain the observed $B_c$ meson spectrum and the prediction of the mass spectrum for unobserved beauty-charm mesons can be tested in future experiments. For the coupled channel components, we predicted the $1S$ state in beauty-charm meson family is about $4\%$, while the $2S$, $1P$, $2P$, $1D$, and $2D$ states are about $14\%$, $10\%$, $33\%$, and $17\%$ respectively. For the $3S$, $2P$ and $2D$ states, the strong decay is allowed, The two-body hadronic decay widths of the $3^1S_0$, $3^3S_1$, $2^3P_2$ states are about 110 MeV, 69 MeV, and 3 MeV, respectively. While the two-body decay widths of the $2^3D_1$, $2D$, $2D^\prime$, and $2^3D_2$ states are 60 MeV, 149 MeV, 65 MeV, and 72 MeV, respectively.

Fairness has become increasingly pivotal in machine learning for high-risk applications such as machine learning in healthcare and facial recognition. However, we see the deficiency in the previous logits space constraint methods. Therefore, we propose a novel framework, Logits-MMD, that achieves the fairness condition by imposing constraints on output logits with Maximum Mean Discrepancy. Moreover, quantitative analysis and experimental results show that our framework has a better property that outperforms previous methods and achieves state-of-the-art on two facial recognition datasets and one animal dataset. Finally, we show experimental results and demonstrate that our debias approach achieves the fairness condition effectively.

Memory management operations that modify page-tables, typically performed during memory allocation/deallocation, are infamous for their poor performance in highly threaded applications, largely due to process-wide TLB shootdowns that the OS must issue due to the lack of hardware support for TLB coherence. We study these operations in NUMA settings, where we observe up to 40x overhead for basic operations such as munmap or mprotect. The overhead further increases if page-table replication is used, where complete coherent copies of the page-tables are maintained across all NUMA nodes. While eager system-wide replication is extremely effective at localizing page-table reads during address translation, we find that it creates additional penalties upon any page-table changes due to the need to maintain all replicas coherent. In this paper, we propose a novel page-table management mechanism, called numaPTE, to enable transparent, on-demand, and partial page-table replication across NUMA nodes in order to perform address translation locally, while avoiding the overheads and scalability issues of system-wide full page-table replication. We then show that numaPTE's precise knowledge of page-table sharers can be leveraged to significantly reduce the number of TLB shootdowns issued upon any memory-management operation. As a result, numaPTE not only avoids replication-related slowdowns, but also provides significant speedup over the baseline on memory allocation/deallocation and access control operations. We implement numaPTEin Linux on x86_64, evaluate it on 4- and 8-socket systems, and show that numaPTE achieves the full benefits of eager page-table replication on a wide range of applications, while also achieving a 12% and 36% runtime improvement on Webserver and Memcached respectively due to a significant reduction in TLB shootdowns.

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) play an important role in galaxy evolution. Binary and triple SMBHs can form after galaxy mergers. A third SMBH may accelerate the SMBH merging process, possibly through the Kozai mechanism. We use N -body simulations to analyze oscillations in the orbital elements of hierarchical triple SMBHs with surrounding star clusters in galaxy centers. We find that SMBH triples spend only a small fraction of time in the hierarchical merger phase (i.e., a binary SMBH with a distant third SMBH perturber). Most of the time, the enclosed stellar mass within the orbits of the innermost or the outermost SMBH is comparable to the SMBH masses, indicating that the influence of the surrounding stellar population cannot be ignored. We search for Eccentric Kozai-Lidov (EKL) oscillations for which (i) the eccentricity of the inner binary and inclination are both oscillate and are anti-phase or in-phase and (ii) the oscillation period is consistent with EKL timescale. We find that EKL oscillations are short-lived and rare: the triple SMBH spends around 3% of its time in this phase over the ensemble of simulations, reaching around 8% in the best-case scenario. This suggests that the role of the EKL mechanism in accelerating the SMBH merger process may have been overestimated in previous studies. We follow-up with three-body simulations, using initial conditions extracted from the simulation, and the result can to some extent repeat the observed EKL-like oscillations. Multi-object tracking (MOT) in video sequences remains a challenging task, especially in scenarios with significant camera movements. This is because targets can drift considerably on the image plane, leading to erroneous tracking outcomes. Addressing such challenges typically requires supplementary appearance cues or Camera Motion Compensation (CMC). While these strategies are effective, they also introduce a considerable computational burden, posing challenges for real-time MOT. In response to this, we introduce UCMCTrack, a novel motion model-based tracker robust to camera movements. Unlike conventional CMC that computes compensation parameters frame-by-frame, UCMCTrack consistently applies the same compensation parameters throughout a video sequence. It employs a Kalman filter on the ground plane and introduces the Mapped Mahalanobis Distance (MMD) as an alternative to the traditional Intersection over Union (IoU) distance measure. By leveraging projected probability distributions on the ground plane, our approach efficiently captures motion patterns and adeptly manages uncertainties introduced by homography projections. Remarkably, UCMCTrack, relying solely on motion cues, achieves state-of-the-art performance across a variety of challenging datasets, including MOT17, MOT20, DanceTrack and KITTI. We propose a unified class of generalized structural equation models (GSEMs) with data of mixed types in mediation analysis, including continuous, categorical, and count variables. Such models extend substantially the classical linear structural equation model to accommodate many data types arising from the application of mediation analysis. Invoking the hierarchical modeling approach, we specify GSEMs by a copula joint distribution of outcome variable, mediator and exposure variable, in which marginal distributions are built upon generalized linear models (GLMs) with confounding factors. We discuss the identifiability conditions for the causal mediation effects in the counterfactual paradigm as well as the issue of mediation leakage, and develop an asymptotically efficient profile maximum likelihood estimation and inference for two key mediation estimands, natural direct effect and natural indirect effect, in different scenarios of mixed data types. Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) tries to overcome the need for a large labeled dataset by transferring knowledge from a source dataset, with lots of labeled data, to a target dataset, that has no labeled data. Since there are no labels in the target domain, early misalignment might propagate into the later stages and lead to an error build-up. In order to overcome this problem, we propose a gradual source domain expansion (GSDE) algorithm. GSDE trains the UDA task several times from scratch, each time reinitializing the network weights, but each time expands the source dataset with target data. In particular, the highest-scoring target data of the previous run are employed as pseudo-source samples with their respective pseudo-label. Using this strategy, the pseudo-source samples induce knowledge extracted from the previous run directly from the start of the new training. This helps align the two domains better, especially in the early training epochs. In this study, we first introduce a strong baseline network and apply our GSDE strategy to it. We conduct experiments and ablation studies on three benchmarks (Office-31, OfficeHome, and DomainNet) and outperform state-of-the-art methods. Models derived from other models are extremely common in machine learning (ML) today. For example, transfer learning is used to create task-specific models from "pre-trained" models through finetuning. This has led to an ecosystem where models are related to each other, sharing structure and often even parameter values. However, it is hard to manage these model derivatives: the storage overhead of storing all derived models quickly becomes onerous, prompting users to get rid of intermediate models that might be useful for further analysis. Additionally, undesired behaviors in models are hard to track down (e.g., is a bug inherited from an upstream model?). In this paper, we propose a model versioning and management system called MGit that makes it easier to store, test, update, and collaborate on model derivatives. MGit introduces a lineage graph that records provenance and versioning information between models, optimizations to efficiently store model parameters, as well as abstractions over this lineage graph that facilitate relevant testing, updating and collaboration functionality. MGit is able to reduce the lineage graph's storage footprint by up to 7x and automatically update downstream models in response to updates to upstream models.

Environmental health studies are increasingly measuring endogenous omics data ($\boldsymbol{M}$) to study intermediary biological pathways by which an exogenous exposure ($\boldsymbol{A}$) affects a health outcome ($\boldsymbol{Y}$), given confounders ($\boldsymbol{C}$). Mediation analysis is frequently carried out to understand such mechanisms. If intermediary pathways are of interest, then there is likely literature establishing statistical and biological significance of the total effect, defined as the effect of $\boldsymbol{A}$ on $\boldsymbol{Y}$ given $\boldsymbol{C}$. For mediation models with continuous outcomes and mediators, we show that leveraging external summary-level information on the total effect improves estimation efficiency of the natural direct and indirect effects. Moreover, the efficiency gain depends on the asymptotic partial $R^2$ between the outcome ($\boldsymbol{Y}\mid\boldsymbol{M},\boldsymbol{A},\boldsymbol{C}$) and total effect ($\boldsymbol{Y}\mid\boldsymbol{A},\boldsymbol{C}$) models, with smaller (larger) values benefiting direct (indirect) effect estimation. We robustify our estimation procedure to incongenial external information by assuming the total effect follows a random distribution. This framework allows shrinkage towards the external information if the total effects in the internal and external populations agree. We illustrate our methodology using data from the Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats, where Cytochrome p450 metabolites are hypothesized to mediate the effect of phthalate exposure on gestational age at delivery. External information on the total effect comes from a recently published pooled analysis of 16 studies. Fairness has become increasingly pivotal in medical image recognition. However, without mitigating bias, deploying unfair medical AI systems could harm the interests of underprivileged populations. In this paper, we observe that while features extracted from the deeper layers of neural networks generally offer higher accuracy, fairness conditions deteriorate as we extract features from deeper layers. This phenomenon motivates us to extend the concept of multi-exit frameworks. Unlike existing works mainly focusing on accuracy, our multi-exit framework is fairness-oriented; the internal classifiers are trained to be more accurate and fairer, with high extensibility to apply to most existing fairness-aware frameworks. During inference, any instance with high confidence from an internal classifier is allowed to exit early. Addressing pose ambiguity in 6D object pose estimation from single RGB images presents a significant challenge, particularly due to object symmetries or occlusions. In response, we introduce a novel score-based diffusion method applied to the $SE(3)$ group, marking the first application of diffusion models to $SE(3)$ within the image domain, specifically tailored for pose estimation tasks. Extensive evaluations demonstrate the method's efficacy in handling pose ambiguity, mitigating perspective-induced ambiguity, and showcasing the robustness of our surrogate Stein score formulation on $SE(3)$. This formulation not only improves the convergence of denoising process but also enhances computational efficiency. ML models are increasingly being pushed to mobile devices, for low-latency inference and offline operation. However, once the models are deployed, it is hard for ML operators to track their accuracy, which can degrade unpredictably (e.g., due to data drift). We design the first end-to-end system for continuously monitoring and adapting models on mobile devices without requiring feedback from users. Our key observation is that often model degradation is due to a specific root cause, which may affect a large group of devices. Therefore, once the system detects a consistent degradation across a large number of devices, it employs a root cause analysis to determine the origin of the problem and applies a cause-specific adaptation. We evaluate the system on two computer vision datasets, and show it consistently boosts accuracy compared to existing approaches. On a dataset containing photos collected from driving cars, our system improves the accuracy on average by 15%.
