24. Global Marine Gravity Gradient Tensor Inverted from Altimetry-derived Deflection of the Vertical: CUGB2023GRAD

Abstract

Geodetic applications of altimetry have largely been inversions of gravity anomaly. Literatures wherein Earth’s gravity gradient tensor has been studied mostly presented only the vertical gravity gradient. However, there are six unique signals that constitute the gravity gradient tensor. Gravity gradients are signals suitable for detecting short-wavelength topographic and tectonic features. They are derived from double differentiation of the geoid (or disturbing potential); and hence, are susceptible to noise amplification which was exacerbated by low across-track resolution of altimetry data in the past. However, current generation of altimetry observations have improved spatial resolutions, with some better than 5 km. Therefore, this study takes advantage of current high-resolution altimetry datasets to present CUGB2023GRAD, a global (latitudinal limits of ±80º) 1 arc-minute model of Earth’s gravity gradient tensor over the oceans using deflection of the vertical as inputs in the wavenumber domain. The results are first assessed via Laplace’s equation; whereby the resultant residual gradient is virtually zero everywhere except at high latitudes – icy environments known for contaminating altimetry observations. Due to the absence of similar models from other institutions, the results are further assessed by comparing the vertical tensor component, Tzz, with equivalent models from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) and Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The DTU equivalents were derived by multiplying their gravity anomalies by 2 πk in the wavenumber domain. Analysis showed that the inverted Tzz averagely deviates from the DTU and SIO equivalents by 0.09 and 0.18 E with corresponding standard deviations of 3.55 and 6.96 E, respectively. Bathymetric coherence analysis of Tzz over a section of the western Pacific showed comparable results with the reference models. This study proves that current generation of altimetry geodetic missions can effectively resolve Earth’s gravity gradient tensor. Abstract

A variety of combinations of Y2O3 and Al2O3 were used as sintering aids in the fabrication of Si3N4 ceramics via gas pressure sintering (GPS). Based on the prediction of the residual thermal stress at the interface, the influence of crystal phases on the wear properties of Si3N4 ceramics was analyzed. As a result, with the increase of Y2O3 addition from 1 to 9 wt%, there are four kinds of crystal phases being firmly discovered in the sample, Y2Si2O7, YSiO2N, Y4Si2O7N2, and Y2Si3O3N4. The crystal phases of Y2Si2O7, YSiO2N, and Y4Si2O7N2 inhibit the particle flaking during the friction process, which greatly inhibited the progress of the abrasive wear, and optimize the wear resistance of silicon nitride ceramics. According to Selsing's model, it can be predicted that the interface residual thermal stress caused by the intergranular phase Y2Si3O3N4 is 22–35% higher than that caused by the other three intergranular phases. The crystal phase Y2Si3O3N4 intensifies the shedding of grains during wear, and reduces the wear performance of silicon nitride ceramics. In addition, the silicon nitride ceramics with 5wt% Y2O3 show better wear resistance, and the wear rate is 1.8 × 10−6 mm3 N−1 m−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) is a key transcription factor that controls adipocyte differentiation and energy in mammals. Therefore, PPARγ is a potential factor influencing animal growth traits. This study primarily evaluates PPARγ as candidate gene for growth traits of cattle and identifies potential molecular marker for cattle breeding. Per previous studies, PPARγ mRNA was mainly expressed at extremely high levels in adipose tissues as shown by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. Three novel SNPs of the bovine PPARγ gene were identified in 514 individuals from six Chinese cattle breeds: SNP1 (AC_000179.1 g.57386668 C G) in intron 2 and SNP2 (AC_000179.1 g.57431964 C T) and SNP3 (AC_000179.1 g.57431994 T C) in exon 7. The present study also investigated genetic characteristics of these SNP loci in six populations. Association analysis showed that SNP1 and SNP3 loci significantly affect weaning growth traits, especially body weight of Nanyang cattle. These results revealed that SNP1 and SNP3 are potential molecular markers for cattle breeding.
