We accessed these signs and common ocular symptoms in the middle-aged population focusing on sex differences when women have drastic hormonal change.Methods: This cohort study consecutively enrolled 2743 patients aged 36– 45 years (n=1000), 46– 55 years (n=1000), and 56– 65 years (n=743). All underwent ocular surface tests and had near add power and GCC measured. Common ocular symptoms were asked using questionnaire.Results: Among female participants, visual symptoms (eye strain and photophobia) were more prevalent in the age group 46– 55, whereas non-visual symptoms (dryness, irritation, and pain) were not. We identified symptomatic presbyopia (near add power ≥ 1.5D) in 14.4%, 73.8%, and 97.8%, positive corneal staining in 29.1%, 23.8%, and 23.9%, and a mean GCC of 98.2 μm, 105.3 μm, and 89.6 μm in the age groups 36– 45, 46– 55, and 56– 65, respectively. Mean tear break-up time were 3.3, 3.5, and 3.3 seconds, respectively. Results indicated a large progression of presbyopia (P< 0.01) from the period of 36– 45 years onward and significantly increased GCC (P< 0.01) in women of age group 46– 55. No notable tendency was observed in symptoms and GCC for male participants.Conclusion: Visual symptoms in women were worse between 46 and 55 years than before or after these ages. The increase of symptomatic presbyopia and GCC may be contributing to visual symptoms in addition to menopausal transition symptoms in this age group.Keywords: presbyopia, sex difference, near add power, menopause, eye strain

Objective This population-based, cross-sectional study was performed to investigate the relationship between a history of glaucoma and subjective happiness.Methods and analysis We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey of 92 397 Japanese men and women aged 40–74 who participated in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study for the Next Generation study. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to estimate the ORs of glaucoma associated with subjective happiness and their two-sided 95% CIs.Results Among 40 727 men and 51 670 women, 1733 participants (635 men, 1098 women) had a history of glaucoma. The odds of unhappiness in male participants with a history of glaucoma were higher (OR 1.26; 95% CI 1.05 to 1.51) than in female participants (OR 1.05; 95% CI 0.90 to 1.23). In a subgroup analysis stratified by age, among participants with a history of glaucoma, males in the younger group (40–59 years) showed the most robust association with unhappiness (OR 1.40; 95% CI 1.04 to 1.88).Conclusions These findings suggest that a history of glaucoma is related with subjective unhappiness, especially in men.

The Kobe University Macroalgal Culture Collection (KU-MACC), as a section of the Kobe University Research Center for Inland Seas, distributes cultures of macroalgae to the public under the umbrella of the National BioResource Project of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, in collaboration with the Microbial Culture Collection of the National Institute of Environmental Studies. KU-MACC principally holds macroalgae (Phaeophyceae, Rhodophyta and Ulvophyceae), but also holds some important related taxa of Schizocladiophyceae and Charophyceae. They are unialgal strains maintained as vegetative thalli and by cryo-preservation. Stock cultures are grown in culture chambers under various temperature conditions in transparent polypropylene vials containing Provasoli’s Enriched Seawater (PES) or PESI medium. The collection includes the “genome strains” of Ectocarpus siliculosus, Chondrus crispus, Chara braunii and their related stains. Depending on the phylogenetic group, DNA sequences of the nuclear rDNA ITS region, chloroplast rbcL, and mitochondrial cox3 genes are determined and used for taxonomy and as genetic tags. Based on the genetic data, molecular phylogenies of Ulvophyceae, Phaeophyceae and Rhodophyta are presented. In the rbcL molecular phylogeny of Ulvophyceae, due to rather limited coverage of culture strains, only members of Ulothricales, Ulvales and Bryopsidales are represented by KU-MACC strains, whereas 10 orders are recognized in the class. The molecular phylogeny of Phaeophyceae based on the cox3 gene showed a tree topology similar to the published multigene molecular phylogeny except for the position of Ishige okamurae, although the bootstrap supports of most nodes were low: Ishigeales branched near the base of Phaeophyceae next to Discosporangiales in the multigene molecular phylogeny, but in the cox3 tree, it showed a long branch and was sister to Fucales. In the molecular phylogeny of Rhodophyta, 14 orders are represented by KU-MACC strains covering about half of currently recognized Bangiophycean and Florideophycean orders.

Abstract Monitoring dynamic changes in near vision is important for early detection of presbyopia. This study assessed the accuracy and reliability of a new smartphone-based application, the Smart Vision Check (SVC), compared with those of a conventional device (AS-28; Kowa, Aichi, Japan), for measuring near functional visual acuity (NFVA). We enrolled 115 healthy volunteers aged ≥ 20 years with bilateral best-corrected visual acuity of ≥ 20/25. The SVC was designed for use on an Apple iPhone SE2 to measure NFVA by tapping on the orientation icon manually. Conventional FVA was measured using the AS-28 with − 2.50 D added to the best distance correction at baseline. There was no significant difference in NFVA-related measurements between the AS-28 and SVC (P > 0.05). Abstract Although a positive link between hypertension and intraocular pressure (IOP) has been suggested, the individual effects of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively) on IOP remain unclear, particularly among Japanese populations. Here, we conducted a large-scale, cross-sectional study to determine individual and combined effects of SBP/DBP and hypertension on IOP. In total, 6783 Japanese people aged over 40 years underwent systemic and ophthalmological examinations, including measurements of blood pressure and IOP, conducted using non-contact tonometers. After adjusting for a priori known confounding factors, SBP and DBP levels were found to be positively correlated with IOP levels. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio when comparing the hypertensive and normotensive groups for the prevalence of ocular hypertension was 1.88 (95% confidence interval, 1.14–3.08). When analysing the combined effects of SBP and DBP on ocular hypertension, SBP elevation had a greater effect on ocular hypertension than DBP increase. In conclusion, SBP and DBP levels and the prevalence of systemic hypertension were found to be positively associated with IOP levels and the prevalence of ocular hypertension in an ophthalmologically healthy Japanese population. Our findings suggest that systemic blood pressure control may be key for controlling IOP.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between dry eye disease (DED) and myopia by evaluating higher order aberrations (HOAs) and choroidal thickness (CT). We recruited 72 myopic children with DED symptoms (mean age 12.8 years), measured the tear film breakup time (TBUT), corneal/intraocular/total ocular HOAs, CT, and axial length (AL), administered lifestyle questionnaires, and evaluated the relationships among TBUT, HOAs, CT, and AL. The TBUT was correlated significantly with the corneal HOAs and intraocular HOAs but not with the total ocular HOAs. Multiple regression analyses showed that the AL was associated significantly with the TBUT (β = − 0.067, P = 0.004), the intraocular HOAs, and total ocular HOAs but not with the corneal HOAs. Abstract Objective The purpose of this study is to analyze axial length, body height, hand length, and foot length to find new factors that predict myopia and to identify gender differences as one of the factors of high myopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted as a single observation. Body height, hand length, and foot length were measured according to standard anthropometric methods. Axial length, retinal thickness, and choroidal thickness were measured using the IOL Master 700 and the Heidelberg Spectralis-OCT. To account for body height differences among participants, foot length/body height and hand length/body height were analyzed using a mixed-effects model. Abstract We describe a new genus and species of brown algae from the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. This species is similar to Delamarea in gross morphology and anatomy, but distinctive in having longer thalli with rare branching and shorter cortical cells. In culture, pluri-zoids derived from plurilocular zoidangia on the erect thalli developed into filamentous gametophytes bearing ectocarpoid plurilocular zoidangia, but also formed parenchymatous erect thalli of sub-sympodial growth similar to Trachynema often having branches, and formed lateral and terminal plurilocular zoidangia. Molecular phylogenies using concatenated chloroplast and mitochondrial gene sequences showed the new alga nested in the clade composed of ectocarpalean genera with diffuse growth, parenchymatous thalli, and multiple chloroplasts, but this species is distinctive. Therefore, we propose Setoutiphycus delamareoides gen. & sp. nov. for this new alga, and provisionally place it in Chordariaceae, Ectocarpales. The Seto Inland Sea repeatedly dried during sea level regressions during glacial periods, and the present sea level recovered after the last glacial maximums (LGM), ca. 10,000 years ago. Therefore, it is unlikely that the species evolved within this area. Its distribution in the area may be explained as a remnant population that survived in refugia in southern Japan during the LGM.

The thermodynamic suppression effect of cavitation occurs in cryogenic fluid, hot water, and Freon, which suppresses cavity development. In this study, the purposes are to clarify the characteristics of the thermodynamic suppression effect in hot water up to 140 ℃, where the thermodynamic suppression effect is expected to be comparable to that of liquid nitrogen or liquid oxygen, and its relationship with the scale effect, which promotes cavitation. To detect the small variation of the temperature inside the cavity, the thermistor was calibrated by using the secondary standard platinum resistance thermometer. The cavity length and temperature depression inside the cavity were measured as indicators to evaluate the thermodynamic suppression effect quantitatively. By increasing mainstream temperature under constant mainstream velocity, the cavity length was unchanged up to 100 ℃. These results can be attributed to a mixture of the thermodynamic suppression effect and promotion effect due to the scale effect caused by the change of Reynolds number. As for temperature depression, it was found that temperature depression was increased as mainstream temperature increased even when the thermodynamic suppression effect and promotion effect due to scale effect are mixed. By increasing mainstream temperature under constant Reynolds number, the scale effect was taken away to some extent and the cavity length was shortened at 100 ℃.

Two phase lubricant has attracted attention as a lubricating oil with little change in viscosity with temperature change. The two phase lubricant consist of the low and high viscosity base oils which are miscible at high temperature but not at lower temperature. For exmaple, Mineral or synthetic base oil are used as a low viscosity lubricant and PAG（polyalkylene glycol）. In the high temperature region, PAG dissolves into mineral or synthetic base oil and the viscosity reduction is relieved. However, the structure and frictional characteristics of the oil film at the sliding part have not been elucidated. In this paper, in-situ analysis of the oil film formed on the friction surface was carried out with a reflection spectroscopic film thickness meter. And, this paper clarified the influence of the oil film structure and oil film thickness of the two phase lubricant and its friction characteristics. As a result, it was suggested that the oil film of the two phase lubricant in the sliding part was a multilayer due to the adsorption layer of PAG. In addition the two phase lubricant showed a friction coefficient lower by about 0.03 to 0.07 at the experimental temperature compared to PAO, and it was clarified that a thick oil film was formed.

The brown algal genus Dictyota (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) is widespread, particularly in warm temperate and tropical waters, and plays a vital role in coastal ecosystems. This study reassessed the taxonomy of Dictyota, focusing on specimens from Myanmar and Japan, using a combination of morphological and molecular analyses. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using concatenated DNA sequences of rbcL, psaA, psbA, cox1 and cox3 genes revealed that Dictyota specimens from Myanmar, Japan, and other regions, belong to nine different clades, each representing a different species. Based on morphological and molecular data, seven out of these nine clades are identified as known species, while the remaining two clades are described as new species D. recumbens sp. nov. (=D. sp. A) and D. dimorphosa sp. nov. (=D. sp. B). Dictyota recumbens is characterized by the recumbent thallus, with transverse yellowish-green iridescent lines, and the formation of solitary spores irregularly distributed over the thallus. Dictyota dimorphosa is characterized by two morphological forms: decumbent and erect thalli, with bluish iridescence mainly in the decumbent thallus, and the formation of spores in oval ring shapes distributed over both thallus surfaces. Dictyota recumbens was typically found in tropical regions, while D. dimorphosa appears to be a cool-warm temperate species, distributed from northeastern Hokkaido to southern Kyushu with an extension along South Korea. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses have revealed the existence of several species whose names appeared in multiple clades, suggesting the potential for future increases in species diversity and the presence of cryptic species within certain groups.
