The self-healing of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis was difficultly practiced because of both local bacterial infection and severe inflammation. Herein, in situ mucoadhesive hydrogels (PPP_E) was successfully prepared by using temperature-sensitive PLGA-PEG-PLGA (PPP) as matrix and EGCG as adhesion enhancer. Series of PPP_E precursor solution with various EGCG concentration (1%, 2% and 5%) were prepared by fixing the PPP concentration at 25%. EGCG slightly decreased the sol-gel transition temperature and shorten sol-gel transition time of PPP hydrogel. Moreover, the incorporation of EGCG could significantly increase the tissue adhesion properties of PPP hydrogel at 37℃. PPP_2%E displayed the suitable gelation temperature (36.2℃), gelation time (100s) and storage moduli (48Pa). Tripeptide KPV as model drug was easily dissolved in cold PPP_2%E precursor solution to prepare KPV@PPP_2%E hydrogel. The anti-inflammatory activity and promoting cell migration potential of KPV in PPP-2% E hydrogel were well maintained. Moreover, KPV@PPP_2%E exhibited the strong antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus. PPP_2%E precursor solution rapidly transited to hydrogel and adhered to the wound surface for 7 hours when administrated to the gingival mucosa of rats. Treatment with KPV@PPP_2%E hydrogel greatly improved the food intake and body weight recovery of chemotherapy-induced rats with oral mucositis. Moreover, the tissue morphology of the ulcerated gingival after KPV@PPP_E hydrogel was also well repaired via promoting CK10 and PCNA expression. Besides, the inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β and TNF-α were significantly inhibited by KPV@PPP_2%E hydrogel while IL-10 was up-regulated. KPV@PPP_2%E hydrogel also had the anti-bacteria effect on MRSA-infected gingival ulcer wound, which resulted in the obvious inhibition of inflammatory cells infiltration in submucosal tissues. Conclusively, KPV@PPP_E may be a promising practical application for cancer people with chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis.

The general treatment of diabetic wound was use of wound dressings to absorb excess exudate. However, traditional wound dressings neither mimic the skin-like properties nor easily be withdrawn from the wound. Herein, the skin-adaptive three-layered films (AGB) dressing has been designed by alternatively depositing phenylboronic acid-grafted γ-PGA (PBA-PGA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The thickness of AGB film was only 479 μm and its flexibility was obviously strengthen by the boronic ester cross-linking. Besides, the dry AGB film was conveniently adhered to the fresh wound, where its adhesive force reached to 1267 ± 330 mN. Moreover, the adhered AGB film was easily peeled without any second damage after hydration. An anti-inflammatory tripeptide (KPV) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) as biologic factors were respectively encapsulated in the bottom layer and the middle-top two layers of AGB film. KPV was firstly released within 3 day and EGF was subsequently released in a glucose-responsive manner. AGB film containing KPV and EGF (K-E-AGB) could significantly improve the repair rate of full-thickness skin wound on diabetic mice. The mechanism of wound healing was associated with inflammatory inhibition, angiogenesis and collagen deposition. Collectively, skin-adaptive film may be a promising dressing as delivery of biologic factors for the chronic wound.

Current bioceramic scaffolds for critical-size bone defects are still facing various challenges such as the poor capability of self-resorption, vascularization and osteogenesis. Herein, a composite scaffold (HOD) is fabricated by integrating bioactive coatings of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and deferoxamine (DFO) into porous hydroxyapatite scaffold (HA), where KGM coating induces the self-resorption of HOD after implanting and DFO promoted the vascularization at the defected bone. Porous HA scaffolds with 200-400 μm of pore sizes were prepared and these bioactive coatings were successfully deposited on the scaffold, which was confirmed by SEM. MC3T3-E1 cells could be tightly attached to the pore wall of HOD and the obvious osteogenic differentiation was clearly displayed after 14 days of co-culture. Besides, HOD displayed the potential of promoting the vascularization of HUVECs. Importantly, the accelerated degradation of HOD was observed in a macrophage-associated acidic medium, which led to the self-resorption of HOD in vivo. Micro-CT images showed that HOD was gradually replaced by newly formed bone, achieving a balance between the new bone formation and the scaffold degradation. The rapid bone repairing of the femoral defects in rats was displayed for HOD in comparison to the HA scaffold. Moreover, the therapeutic mechanism of HOD was highly associated with promoted osteogenesis and vascularization. Collectively, the porous ceramic scaffold orchestrated with bioactive coatings may be a promising strategy for repairing of the large bone defect.

Facial appearance matters in social networks. Individuals frequently make trait judgments from facial clues. Although these face-based impressions lack the evidence to determine validity, they are of vital importance, because they may relate to human network-based social behavior, such as seeking certain individuals for help, advice, dating, and cooperation, and thus they may relate to centrality in social networks. However, little to no work has investigated the apparent facial traits that influence network centrality, despite the large amount of research on attributions of the central position including personality and behavior. In this paper, we examine whether perceived traits based on facial appearance affect network centrality by exploring the initial stage of social network formation in a first-year college residential area. We took face photos of participants who are freshmen living in the same residential area, and we asked them to nominate community members linking to different networks. We then collected facial perception data by requiring other participants to rate facial images for three main attributions: dominance, trustworthiness, and attractiveness. Meanwhile, we proposed a framework to discover how facial appearance affects social networks. Our results revealed that perceived facial traits were correlated with the network centrality and that they were indicative to predict the centrality of people in different networks. Our findings provide psychological evidence regarding the interaction between faces and network centrality. Our findings also offer insights in to a combination of psychological and social network techniques, and they highlight the function of facial bias in cuing and signaling social traits. Science of science has become a popular topic that attracts great attentions from the research community. The development of data analytics technologies and the readily available scholarly data enable the exploration of data-driven prediction, which plays a pivotal role in finding the trend of scientific impact. In this paper, we analyse methods and applications in data-driven prediction in the science of science, and discuss their significance. First, we introduce the background and review the current state of the science of science. Second, we review data-driven prediction based on paper citation count, and investigate research issues in this area. Then, we discuss methods to predict scholar impact, and we analyse different approaches to promote the scholarly collaboration in the collaboration network. This paper also discusses open issues and existing challenges, and suggests potential research directions., 17 pages, 6 figures

Quantifying success in science plays a key role in guiding funding allocations, recruitment decisions, and rewards. Recently, a significant amount of progresses have been made towards quantifying success in science. This lack of detailed analysis and summary continues a practical issue. The literature reports the factors influencing scholarly impact and evaluation methods and indices aimed at overcoming this crucial weakness. We focus on categorizing and reviewing the current development on evaluation indices of scholarly impact, including paper impact, scholar impact, and journal impact. Besides, we summarize the issues of existing evaluation methods and indices, investigate the open issues and challenges, and provide possible solutions, including the pattern of collaboration impact, unified evaluation standards, implicit success factor mining, dynamic academic network embedding, and scholarly impact inflation. This paper should help the researchers obtaining a broader understanding of quantifying success in science, and identifying some potential research directions. Refereed/Peer-reviewed
