Leg pain is common in athletes, and it is generally self-limiting. Overtraining or poor training techniques, combined with intrinsic biomechanical factors and worn equipment, account for the greatest proportion of chronic pain syndromes. Most chronic pain can be alleviated with relative rest and appropriate modification of contributory factors. Diagnosis of the cause of chronic leg pain can be a challenge, and it requires careful attention to historical details, examination findings, and diagnostic test results. The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is a highly used, versatile, and complex joint that provides stability and increases function. Acute and chronic dysfunction at the AC joint can have debilitating effects that should be treated appropriately and expediently to preserve function. The historical, physical examination, and radiographic findings are generally very consistent and lead to both diagnosis and well-established treatment protocols. With few exceptions, injuries can be treated nonoperatively with a high degree of success. When indicated, surgical outcomes are also successful but have an overall higher rate of complications. A physician should be well versed in both acute and chronic conditions to ensure the patient has the best opportunity to reclaim function, return to sport, and avoid pain, restriction in range of motion, and need for further surgery. Phylogenetic studies of yeasts rely on an extensive molecular and biochemical data set, but structural characters axe scarce. Details of mitosis in yeasts have been studied with transmission electron microscopy and immunofluorescence. Of these two methods immunofluorescence is faster and easier and yields sufficient detail for cytological comparisons. Only three basidiomycetous yeasts have been studied thus far with immunofluorescence. Mitosis in budding cells of ascomycetous yeasts occurs in the parent, while in basidiomycetous yeasts, except in Agaricostilbum pulcherrimum, it occurs in the bud. Mitosis in additional yeasts in the Agaricostilbomycetidae of the Urediniomycetes was observed using immunofluorescence localization of freeze-substituted material. In Stilbum vulgare, mitosis occurred in the parent, but in Bensingtonia yuccicola it occurred in the bud as in most other basidiomycetous yeasts. Stilbum vulgare also had predominantly binucleate yeast cells. Nuclear small subunit rDNA sequence data showed that A. pulcherrimum and S. vulgare are more closely related to each other than to B. yuccicola within the Agaricostilbomycetidae. The article presents the author's analysis of the impact of public opinion on efforts toward disarmament and suggests ideas to counter stereotyped beliefs about disarmament and arms control. The author stresses the need to show that disarmament is an achievable goal. He thinks that disarmament and political settlement of disputes are connected. Disarmament, according to the author, will not cause depressions and economic chaos.

A 16 year old amateur soccer player sustained a minor head injury while contesting a ball in the air. He was unconscious for two minutes and remained "dizzy" for about an hour. After two days he developed a profound left lower motor neurone facial nerve palsy. He was found to have a complex fracture of the left petrous temporal bone, with fluid in the left middle ear and left mastoid. Treatment was conservative with oral steroids and oral co-amoxiclav and a left myringotomy to decompress his middle ear. Integrated Information Theory (IIT) 3.0 is among the leading theories of consciousness in contemporary neuroscience. The core of the theory relies on the calculation of a scalar mathematical measure of consciousness, Φ, which is inspired by the phenomenological axioms of the theory. Here, we show that despite its widespread application, Φ is not a well-defined mathematical concept in the sense that the value it specifies is non-unique. To demonstrate this, we introduce an algorithm that calculates all possible Φ values for a given system in strict accordance with the mathematical definition from the theory. We show that, to date, all published Φ values under consideration are selected arbitrarily from a multitude of equally valid alternatives. Introduction: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a group of rare malignant tumours that can occur at almost any anatomical location in patients of any age, which often present to health care professional working outside a recognised sarcoma service. A review of foot and ankle STSs was conducted, reporting on patient and tumour characteristics, and patient outcome following surgery performed within and outside our sarcoma service., Patients and Methods: A retrospective review of all foot and ankle STSs managed by our sarcoma service over a 14 year period was performed. Patient demographics, tumour characteristics, management and patient outcomes including recurrence rates and survival were analysed., Results: Twenty-six patients were analysed (16F:10M) with a mean age of 57.7 years (range 17-87). The mean follow-up was 6.3 years (range 1-16). Sixteen tumours involved the foot, nine the ankle, and one spanned the foot and ankle. Mean tumour size was 4.3 cm (range 0.8-15), although 61% of cases were smaller than 4 cm, and almost one third of cases smaller than 1 cm. Seven of 26 (27%) cases were diagnosed after an unplanned excision performed by non sarcoma surgeons. These patients were more likely to undergo an incomplete tumour excision (p < 0.001), suffer local recurrence (p = 0.001), and eventually undergo a secondary amputation (p = 0.034) than those patients managed exclusively by a sarcoma service. Overall, 12 (46%) patients died of their disease during follow up, equating to a five-year survival rate of 69%., Conclusion: Our data shows that unplanned excisions continue to be performed on foot and ankle STSs, and that these have detrimental effects on patients. Despite this, our results also show that these complex patients can be managed successfully when referred appropriately to a sarcoma service, prior to any surgical treatment. The scientific study of consciousness is currently undergoing a critical transition in the form of a rapidly evolving scientific debate regarding whether or not currently proposed theories can be assessed for their scientific validity. At the forefront of this debate is Integrated Information Theory (IIT), widely regarded as the preeminent theory of consciousness because it quantified subjective experience in a scalar mathematical measure called Φ that is in principle measurable. Epistemological issues in the form of the "unfolding argument" have provided a concrete refutation of IIT by demonstrating how it permits functionally identical systems to have differences in their predicted consciousness. The implication is that IIT and any other proposed theory based on a physical system's causal structure may already be falsified even in the absence of experimental refutation. However, so far many of these arguments surrounding the epistemological foundations of falsification arguments, such as the unfolding argument, are too abstract to determine the full scope of their implications. Here, we make these abstract arguments concrete, by providing a simple example of functionally equivalent machines realizable with table-top electronics that take the form of isomorphic digital circuits with and without feedback. This allows us to explicitly demonstrate the different levels of abstraction at which a theory of consciousness can be assessed. Within this computational hierarchy, we show how IIT is simultaneously falsified at the finite-state automaton level and unfalsifiable at the combinatorial-state automaton level. We use this example to illustrate a more general set of falsification criteria for theories of consciousness: to avoid being already falsified, or conversely unfalsifiable, scientific theories of consciousness must be invariant with respect to changes that leave the inference procedure fixed at a particular level in a computational hierarchy., (© The Author(s) 2021. The fitness of group-living animals often depends on how well members share information needed for collective decision-making. Theoretical studies have shown that collective choices can emerge in a homogeneous group of individuals following identical rules, but real animals show much evidence for heterogeneity in the degree and nature of their contribution to group decisions. In social insects, for example, the transmission and processing of information is influenced by a well-organized division of labour. Studies that accurately quantify how this behavioural heterogeneity affects the spread of information among group members are still lacking. In this paper, we look at nest choices during colony emigrations of the ant Temnothorax rugatulus and quantify the degree of behavioural heterogeneity of workers. Using clustering methods and network analysis, we identify and characterize four behavioural castes of workers-primary, secondary, passive and wandering-covering distinct roles in the spread of information during an emigration. This detailed characterization of the contribution of each worker can improve models of collective decision-making in this species and promises a deeper understanding of behavioural variation at the colony level.

A thorough study of the fermentation broth of three strains of Botrytis cinerea which were grown on a modified Czapek-Dox medium supplemented with 5 ppm copper sulphate, yielded five undescribed metabolites. These metabolites possessed a sesquiterpenoid (+)-4-epi-eremophil-9-ene carbon skeleton which was enantiomeric to that of the phytoalexin, capsidiol. The isolation of these metabolites when the fungus was stressed, suggests that they may be potential effectors used by B. cinerea to circumvent plant chemical defences against phytopathogenic fungi.
