1. A Compliant Robotic Leg Based on Fibre Jamming

Abstract

Humans possess a remarkable ability to react to unpredictable perturbations through immediate mechanical responses, which harness the visco-elastic properties of muscles to maintain balance. Inspired by this behaviour, we propose a novel design of a robotic leg utilising fibre jammed structures as passive compliant mechanisms to achieve variable joint stiffness and damping. We developed multi-material fibre jammed tendons with tunable mechanical properties, which can be 3D printed in one-go without need for assembly. Through extensive numerical simulations and experimentation, we demonstrate the usefulness of these tendons for shock absorbance and maintaining joint stability. We investigate how they could be used effectively in a multi-joint robotic leg by evaluating the relative contribution of each tendon to the overall stiffness of the leg. Abstract

The DARPA Subterranean Challenge was designed for competitors to develop and deploy teams of autonomous robots to explore difficult unknown underground environments. Categorised in to human-made tunnels, underground urban infrastructure and natural caves, each of these subdomains had many challenging elements for robot perception, locomotion, navigation and autonomy. These included degraded wireless communication, poor visibility due to smoke, narrow passages and doorways, clutter, uneven ground, slippery and loose terrain, stairs, ledges, overhangs, dripping water, and dynamic obstacles that move to block paths among others. In the Final Event of this challenge held in September 2021, the course consisted of all three subdomains. The task was for the robot team to perform a scavenger hunt for a number of pre-defined artefacts within a limited time frame. Only one human supervisor was allowed to communicate with the robots once they were in the course. Points were scored when accurate detections and their locations were communicated back to the scoring server. A total of 8 teams competed in the finals held at the Mega Cavern in Louisville, KY, USA. This article describes the systems deployed by Team CSIRO Data61 that tied for the top score and won second place at the event.

3. Jammkle: Fibre jamming 3D printed multi-material tendons and their application in a robotic ankle

Abstract

Fibre jamming is a relatively new and understudied soft robotic mechanism that has previously found success when used in stiffness-tuneable arms and fingers. However, to date researchers have not fully taken advantage of the freedom offered by contemporary fabrication techniques including multi-material 3D printing in the creation of fibre jamming structures. In this research, we present a novel, modular, multi-material, 3D printed, fibre jamming tendon unit for use in a stiffness-tuneable compliant robotic ankle, or Jammkle. We describe the design and fabrication of the Jammkle and highlight its advantages compared to examples from modern literature. We develop a multiphysics model of the tendon unit, showing good agreement with experimental data. Finally, we demonstrate a practical application by integrating multiple tendon units into a robotic ankle and perform extensive testing and characterisation. Abstract

Heterogeneous teams of robots, leveraging a balance between autonomy and human interaction, bring powerful capabilities to the problem of exploring dangerous, unstructured subterranean environments. Here we describe the solution developed by Team CSIRO Data61, consisting of CSIRO, Emesent and Georgia Tech, during the DARPA Subterranean Challenge. These presented systems were fielded in the Tunnel Circuit in August 2019, the Urban Circuit in February 2020, and in our own Cave event, conducted in September 2020. A unique capability of the fielded team is the homogeneous sensing of the platforms utilised, which is leveraged to obtain a decentralised multi-agent SLAM solution on each platform (both ground agents and UAVs) using peer-to-peer communications. This enabled a shift in focus from constructing a pervasive communications network to relying on multi-agent autonomy, motivated by experiences in early circuit events. These experiences also showed the surprising capability of rugged tracked platforms for challenging terrain, which in turn led to the heterogeneous team structure based on a BIA5 OzBot Titan ground robot and an Emesent Hovermap UAV, supplemented by smaller tracked or legged ground robots. The ground agents use a common CatPack perception module, which allowed reuse of the perception and autonomy stack across all ground agents with minimal adaptation.

Rising housing prices in California at the turn of the 21st century may be cause for a reevaluation of rent stabilization policies. Strong rent controls were dismantled in communities like Berkeley in the late 1990s, but little research has been conducted to measure the effects of the policy change on housing availability and rental prices. This paper investigates the impact of the current vacancy decontrol system on housing availability, adequacy, and affordability, while seeking to measure the lingering effects of the vacancy control system on the Berkeley rental housing market.

We study the evolution of US mortgage credit supply during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the mortgage market experienced a historic boom in 2020, we show there was also a large and sustained increase in intermediation markups that limited the pass-through of low rates to borrowers. Markups typically rise during periods of peak demand, but this historical relationship explains only part of the large increase during the pandemic. Abstract

In my dissertation I explore artistic experimentation and patterns of influence from the mid-1950s to the early-1960s in West Germany, specifically artistic activity centered in Düsseldorf. By 1958 artists, curators, and critics in this city were articulating and visualizing explorations of the post-World War II era of physical and social reconstruction, the quotidian effects of economic expansion, and direct encounters with Anglo-American cultures. I examine the diverse source material that informed artistic practices in this period that contributed to the construction of a vibrant art “scene.” The “scene,” which I define as a multidimensional network characterized by relationships and personal references, acted as means of fostering and exchanging ideas through key spaces of exhibiting, both on the small, intimate scale of the Wohnatelier (“live-in studio”) and on the larger scale of the public exhibition in new local galleries and old museum spaces, often in partially ruinous states. Based on extensive archival research, I investigate how the diverse efforts Informel, Zero, and Neo-Dada movements interacted with and expanded upon each other. Rather than organize these movements according to a linear, evolutionary model, I instead consider the complex processes through which artists realized visually distinct approaches while studying at the same art academy, visiting the same exhibitions, and scrutinizing the same art historical models. I determine that collapse, decay, and ruination, balanced by reinvention and reconstruction, defined artistic practice in postwar Düsseldorf. Despite diverse formal, material, and aesthetic practices, artists such as Joseph Beuys, Konrad Klapheck, and Otto Piene participated in a communal scene, crafting makeshift environments in which to create and exhibit. I investigate the manifold ways that these artists, aided by critics, curators, and gallerists, rejected ideology and revived past avant-garde practices of the early twentieth-century, combining them with present concerns and critiques of the so-called Wirtschaftswunder, or “economic miracle,” to create a new, “contemporary” art scene. Finally, I consider how artists related their own practices and actions to the past—psychically in the form of memory and physically in the form of ruins—and to present conceptions of art according to local, national, and international frameworks.

Abstract

Home appraisals are produced for millions of residential mortgage transactions each year. In addition to preventing fraudulent transactions, an important benefit of appraisals when they report a value below the contract price is that they help borrowers renegotiate prices with sellers. However, appraised values are rarely below the purchase contract price: Some 30% of appraisals in our sample are exactly at the home price (with less than 10% of them below it). We construct a simple but intuitive model to explain how appraisers' incentives within the institutional framework that governs mortgage lending lead to information loss in appraisals (i.e., appraisals set equal to the contract price). We also present new empirical findings relevant to the issue of appraisal accuracy, based on analysis of appraisal and contract price data and analysis of mortgage default patterns. One new finding—that the frequency of appraisal equal to contract price increases at the loan‐to‐value boundaries (notches) typical of mortgage pricing schedules—is, in fact, implied by our model. In addition, consistent with information loss or, more broadly, with the view that appraisals often artificially confirm the contract price, we find that mortgages with appraised value equal to the contract price are more likely to default. 47. Is the Community Reinvestment Act Still Relevant to Mortgage Lending?

Abstract

The market share of conforming-size, home purchase mortgage originations has shifted from banking institutions to nonbank lenders. In 2017, nonbanks originated more than 1.8 million purchase mortgages (53% of the market), compared with 1.4 million by banks. Nonbanks originated 30% of purchase-money mortgages in 2000 and 24% in 2007. Does the declining role of banking institutions imply that the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) is becoming less relevant to mortgage lending, since only they are subject to the requirements of the CRA? We address this question by exploring the changing composition of home purchase mortgage originations since 2000. We focus on the share of FHA and conforming-sized conventional loans to low- or moderate-income (LMI) households or to finance properties in LMI neighborhoods, and provide a more detailed examination of shifts in market composition than previous studies. Our analysis suggests that the CRA continues to be relevant to maintaining broad access to mortgage credit. We find that the overall share of loans to LMI borrowers has decreased compared with pre-2004, which we view as a reasonable benchmark period. However, this decrease has mostly been offset by an increased share to borrowers (broadly distributed by income) purchasing properties in LMI neighborhoods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
