Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) as one of the primary Internet of Things (IoT) provides real time and continuous healthcare monitoring and has been widely deployed to improve the quality of peoples' life. In edge-enabled WBANs, intensive computing tasks could be offloaded to Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) servers, guaranteeing that the massive amount of health data with different user priorities could be processed in lower delay and energy consumption. Efficient computation offloading schemes are more critical to satisfy the massive data access and personalized service requirements for multiple Quality of Service (QoS) parameters constraint WBANs. In this paper, we propose a Two-Stage Potential Game based Computation Offloading Strategy (TPOS) to optimize resource allocation while taking into consideration the task priorities and user priorities of WBANs. Firstly, we construct a system utility maximization problem about the QoS of tasks. The reward, cost and penalty functions are given to model the computation offloading. Then, we propose a two-stage optimization method to solve the problem of mutual restriction strategies existing in the strategy space of the potential game model, reducing the computation complexity and improving the feasibility of the algorithm. Finally, performance evaluations on average processing delay, energy consumption and network utility are conducted to show the significance of the proposed TPOS algorithm.

Background and Purpose: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in Greenland. Since 2004, medical treatment of lung cancer has been available in Greenland. However, both diagnostic work-up and treatment logistics are hampered by the lack of medical services in smaller settlements, the infrastructure, and extreme arctic weather conditions. Clinico-pathological data and assessment of treatment outcome in lung cancer in Greenland have not been carried out since 2015. This study aims to provide an analysis of Greenlandic patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) from 2015 to 2020, compared to the cohort from the 2015 study. We focus on diagnostics, patient and treatment characteristics, and survival rates. Additionally, we include new data on treatment-related factors and diagnostic delays. Patients/material: Clinical-, pathological-, genomic data, tuberculosis status and survival were retrieved from the medical journal., Results: A total of 163 patients were identified. Survival had improved in stage I, III, and IV, and early-stage disease was more often diagnosed as compared to the 2015 cohort. Molecular alterations and PD-L1 expressing tumors were comparable between Greenlandic and Danish patients. Diagnostic delay was a major concern., Interpretation: While NSCLC survival in Greenland has improved over the past decade, significant challenges remain. The trend towards diagnosing more stage IA-IIIA patients and the recent improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic options in Greenland are expected to translate into a better prognosis in the coming years. Addressing diagnostic delays and enhancing treatment options are crucial steps toward improving outcomes for NSCLC patients in Greenland.

Web-based testing of cognitive abilities allows for large-scale assessments without geographical constraints. Yet, the extent to which it can reach populations beyond the typical demographic groups recruited for cognitive studies is unclear. This study focused on comparing the characteristics of individuals from a general population study (HUNT4) who chose to participate in a cognitive study (HUNT4-Hjernetrim) with those who did not. Additionally, we investigated participants' engagement and user experience. We obtained data on socio-demographics, health conditions (both physical and mental), self-reported cognitive or learning difficulties, and lifestyle factors of Hjernetrim participants and non-participants from the HUNT4 database. Hjernetrim involved 13 cognitive tests, administered through the online platform Memoro. We used logistic regressions to assess participation biases and linear regressions to assess participants' engagement and user experience. Of 65,851 HUNT4 participants invited via regular mail to Hjernetrim, 5634 (9.4%, aged 13-97, 54% women) participated. The best represented in the sample were 50-79-year-olds, women, tertiary educated, living alone, from urban areas, not occupationally active, and reporting memory complaints. Individuals who were aged 80+, had motor or vision impairments, and teenagers with learning disabilities, were underrepresented. Participants were more likely to have mental health problems, have or survived cancer and less likely to have cardiovascular disease. Participants logged on mainly during weekdays, the preferred time of day varied by age. On average, participants used 42 min and completed 78% of the tasks. Using PCs provided the most complete data. In terms of user experiences, 65% were positive while 14% were negative or reported technical difficulties. Overall, the study demonstrated that web-based methodology allowed for a relatively well-represented sample that included groups typically difficult to reach. This study explores the synchronization of multimodal physiological data streams, in particular, the integration of electroencephalography (EEG) with a virtual reality (VR) headset featuring eye-tracking capabilities. A potential use case for the synchronized data streams is demonstrated by implementing a hybrid steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) based brain-computer interface (BCI) speller within a fully immersive VR environment. The hardware latency analysis reveals an average offset of 36 ms between EEG and eye-tracking data streams and a mean jitter of 5.76 ms. The study further presents a proof of concept brain-computer interface (BCI) speller in VR, showcasing its potential for real-world applications. The findings highlight the feasibility of combining commercial EEG and VR technologies for neuroscientific research and open new avenues for studying brain activity in ecologically valid VR environments. The argument for a female advantage in word list learning is often based on partial observations that focus on a single component of the task. Using a large sample ( N  = 4403) of individuals 13-97 years of age from the general population, we investigated whether this advantage is consistently reflected in learning, recall, and recognition and how other cognitive abilities differentially support word list learning. A robust female advantage was found in all subcomponents of the task. Semantic clustering mediated the effects of short-term and working memory on long-delayed recall and recognition, and serial clustering on short-delayed recall. These indirect effects were moderated by sex, with men benefiting more from reliance on each clustering strategy than women. Auditory attention span mediated the effect of pattern separation on true positives in word recognition, and this effect was stronger in men than in women. Men had better short-term and working memory scores, but lower auditory attention span and were more vulnerable to interference both in delayed recall and recognition. Thus, our data suggest that auditory attention span and interference control (inhibition), rather than short-term or working memory scores, semantic and/or serial clustering on their own, underlie better performance on word list learning in women.

Background: Patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) are at increased risk for symptom deterioration following treatment, with up to 60% resuming substance use within the first year posttreatment. Substance use craving together with cognitive and mental health variables play important roles in the understanding of the trajectories from abstinence to substance use., Objective: This prospective observational feasibility study aims to improve our understanding of specific profiles of variables explaining SUD symptom deterioration, in particular, how individual variability in mental health, cognitive functioning, and smartphone use is associated with craving and substance use in a young adult clinical population., Methods: In this pilot study, 26 patients with SUDs were included at about 2 weeks prior to discharge from inpatient SUD treatment from 3 different treatment facilities in Norway. Patients underwent baseline neuropsychological and mental health assessments; they were equipped with smartwatches and they downloaded an app for mobile sensor data collection in their smartphones. Every 2 days for up to 8 weeks, the patients were administered mobile ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) to evaluate substance use, craving, mental health, cognition, and a mobile Go/NoGo performance task. Repeated EMAs as well as the smartphone's battery use data were averaged across all days per individual and used as candidate input variables together with the baseline measures in models of craving intensity and the occurrence of any substance use episodes., Results: A total of 455 momentary assessments were completed out of a potential maximum of 728 assessments. Using EMA and baseline data as candidate input variables and craving and substance use as responses, model selection identified mean craving intensity as the most important predictor of having one or more substance use episodes and with variabilities in self-reported impulsivity, mental health, and battery use as significant explanatory variables of craving intensity., Conclusions: This prospective observational feasibility study adds novelty by collecting high-intensity data for a considerable period of time, including mental health data, mobile cognitive assessments, and mobile sensor data. Our study also contributes to our knowledge about a clinical population with the most severe SUD presentations in a vulnerable period during and after discharge from inpatient treatment. We confirmed the importance of variability in cognitive function and mood in explaining variability in craving and that smartphone usage may possibly add to this understanding. Aim: To investigate visual function and neurodevelopment in a geographically defined population cohort of school-aged children born extremely preterm., Methods: All children born extremely preterm in Central Norway between 2006 and 2011 (n=65) were identified, and 36 (median age, min/max: 13, 10/16) were included. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity (four spatial frequencies), parent-reported challenges and neuropsychological testing in learning, executive functions, motor skills, perception, reaction time, working and visual memory, processing speed, and pattern separation were measured. Brain MRI (3T) was acquired and read by a neuroradiologist., Results: Median (min/max) BCVA letter score was 85 (35/91) in the better and 82 (13/89) in the worse eye. ROP participants (n=7) had lower contrast sensitivity in the two highest spatial frequencies (p = 0.024 and p = 0.004). Parent-reported challenges correlated negatively with BCVA (learning: p = 0.014; executive functions: p = 0.002; motor skills: p = 0.000; and perception: p = 0.001), while motor skills correlated negatively with one (p = 0.010) and perception with two (p = 0.003 and p = 0.009) of four spatial frequencies. Neuropsychological tests were reduced relative to norms. None had MRI-verified preterm brain injury., Conclusion: Visual function was subnormal and correlated with parent-reported challenges in a small cohort of extremely preterm school-aged children, indicating that visual function may be a marker of neurodevelopmental outcomes., (© 2023 The Authors. Purpose: Risk of cancer has been associated with body or organ size in several studies. We sought to investigate the relationship between intracranial volume (ICV) (as a proxy for lifetime maximum brain size) and risk of IDH-mutant low-grade glioma., Methods: In a multicenter case-control study based on population-based data, we included 154 patients with IDH-mutant WHO grade 2 glioma and 995 healthy controls. ICV in both groups was calculated from 3D MRI brain scans using an automated reverse brain mask method, and then compared using a binomial logistic regression model., Results: We found a non-linear association between ICV and risk of glioma with increasing risk above and below a threshold of 1394 ml (p < 0.001). After adjusting for ICV, sex was not a risk factor for glioma., Conclusion: Intracranial volume may be a risk factor for IDH-mutant low-grade glioma, but the relationship seems to be non-linear with increased risk both above and below a threshold in intracranial volume., (© 2022. Background: Little is known about the extent to which glioma patients experience subjective changes in cognitive function following surgery. We sought to assess patient-reported cognitive function before and after glioma surgery and explore potential factors associated with cognitive change., Methods: In a prospective population-based study, patient-reported cognitive function was measured in 182 patients undergoing primary surgery for diffuse glioma (141 high-grade gliomas (HGG) and 41 low-grade gliomas (LGG)) by using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 cognitive function subscale preoperatively and at 1 and 6 months postoperatively. Binomial logistic regression models were used to assess factors possibly associated with patient-reported cognitive changes., Results: In the HGG group, the mean cognitive function score increased from 70.9 (95% 66.6, 75.2) preoperatively to 85.1 (95% CI 81.2, 89.0) (p < 0.001) and 83.3 (95% CI 79.1, 87.6) (p < 0.001) at 1 and 6 months postoperatively, respectively. In the LGG group, the mean score was 80.9 (95% CI 74.4, 87.4) preoperatively and remained stable at postoperative follow-ups. Females reported lower scores than males. At an individual level, both improvement and deterioration in cognitive scores were frequently seen in LGG and HGG patients after surgery. Preoperative use of corticosteroids and large tumor volume were predictors for cognitive improvement at 1 month postoperatively. No predictors were identified for cognitive improvement at 6 months and worsening at 1 and 6 months., Conclusion: Many glioma patients experience perioperative subjective changes in cognitive function after surgery. At group level, HGG patients reported improved cognitive function after surgery, while LGG patients reported stable cognitive function. Background: Impairments in neurocognitive functioning are associated with substance use behavior. Previous studies in neurocognitive predictors of substance use typically use self-report measures rather than neuropsychological performance measures and suffer from low sample sizes and use of clinical diagnostic cut offs., Methods: Crossectional data from the HUNT4 Study (Helseundersøkelsen i Trøndelag) was used to study executive neuropsychological performance and self-reported measures of neurocognitive function associated with a history of illicit substance use in a general population sample of young adults in Norway. We performed both between group comparisons and logistic regression modeling and controlled for mental health symptomatology., Results: Subjects in our cohort with a self-reported use of illicit substances had significantly higher self-reported mental health and neurocognitive symptom load. A logistic regression model with substance use as response included sex, commission errors and self-reported inattentiveness and anxiety as significant predictors. After 10-fold cross-validation this model achieved a moderate area under the receiver-operator curve of 0.63. To handle the class imbalance typically found in such population data, we also calculated balanced accuracy with a optimal model cut off of 0.234 with a sensitivity of 0.50 and specificity of 0.76 as well as precision recall-area under the curve of 0.28., Conclusions: Subtle cognitive dysfunction differentiates subjects with and without a history of illicit substance use. Neurocognitive factors outperformed the effects of depressive symptoms on substance use behavior in this cohort. We highlight the need for using adequate statistical tools for evaluating the performance of models in unbalanced datasets.

Background: Aerobic exercise is proposed to attenuate cognitive decline in aging. We investigated the effect of different aerobic exercise interventions and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) upon cognition throughout a 5-year exercise intervention in older adults. Methods: 106 older adults (52 women, age 70-77 years) were randomized into high-intensity interval training (HIIT; ∼90% peak heart rate), moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT; ∼70% peak heart rate), or control for 5 years. The HIIT and MICT groups performed supervised training twice weekly, while the control group was asked to follow the national physical activity guidelines (30 min of physical activity/day). At baseline, 1-, 3-, and 5-year follow-up, participants partook in cognitive testing (spatial memory, verbal memory, pattern separation, processing speed, working memory, and planning ability), underwent clinical testing, and filled out health-related questionnaires. Linear mixed models were used to assess the effects of the exercise group and CRF (measured as peak and max oxygen uptake) on each cognitive test. The effects of changes in CRF on changes in each cognitive test score throughout the intervention were also assessed. The associations between baseline CRF and cognitive abilities at the follow-ups were investigated using linear regressions. Results: There was no group-by-time interaction on the cognitive measures, and neither HIIT nor MICT participation was associated with better cognitive performance than control at any time point during the 5-year intervention. All groups increased their CRF similarly during the 1st year and subsequently declined back to baseline levels after 5 years. A higher CRF was associated with higher processing speed throughout the intervention while increasing CRF during the intervention was associated with better working memory and worse pattern separation. Higher CRF at baseline predicted consistently better processing speed and verbal memory performance. Conclusion: In this first 5-year randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of HIIT, MICT, and physical activity according to national guidelines on cognition, we observed no effect of exercise intervention group on cognition when compared to following the national physical activity guidelines. Still, the results showed that higher CRF and increasing CRF benefited multiple, but not all, cognitive abilities in older adults. The hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex are considered the main brain structures for allocentric representation of the external environment. Here, we show that the amygdala and the ventral visual stream are involved in allocentric representation. Thirty-one young men explored 35 virtual environments during high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and were subsequently tested on recall of the allocentric pattern of the objects in each environment-in other words, the positions of the objects relative to each other and to the outer perimeter. We find increasingly unique brain activation patterns associated with increasing allocentric accuracy in distinct neural populations in the perirhinal cortex, parahippocampal cortex, fusiform cortex, amygdala, hippocampus, and entorhinal cortex. Management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, is generally cumbersome for patients and is a massive health-economic burden. In recent years, the immunomodulating effects of vitamin D have gained a huge interest in its possible pathogenic influence on the pathophysiology of IBD. Vitamin D deficiency is frequent among patients with IBD. Several clinical studies have pointed to a critical role for vitamin D in ameliorating disease outcomes. Although causation versus correlation unfortunately remains an overwhelming issue in the illusive chicken versus egg debate regarding vitamin D and IBD, here we summarise the latest knowledge of the immunological effects of vitamin D in IBD and recommend from available evidence that physicians regularly monitor serum 25(OH)D levels in patients with IBD. Moreover, we propose an algorithm for optimising vitamin D status in patients with IBD in clinical practice. Purpose: Knowledge about treatment injuries (technical failures and complications) in relation to knee ligament reconstructions is sparse. Our purpose was to describe treatment injuries to knee ligament reconstruction in Denmark during a 10-year period and to suggest initiatives to reduce the risk for treatment injuries., Methods: Treatment injuries after knee ligament reconstructions reported to the Danish Patient Compensation Association (DPCA) 2005-2014 were analyzed and compared to information from the Danish Kneeligament Reconstruction Register and Danish National Patient Register., Results: The number of knee ligament reconstructions in Denmark 2005-2014, including revisions, was 31,326. Of the 704 cases claimed to DPCA, 371 were approved as treatment injuries (1.42% of all operations). Tunnel malpositioning (135 = 0.43% of all operations), deep infection (0.27%), nerve injury (0.17%), pain (0.12%) and unrecognized combined instability (0.11%) were the most common. Patients operated with anteromedial technique for femoral tunnel placement had a lower incidence (p < 0.0001) of tunnel malpositioning compared to other techniques. Public and private hospitals had the same risk of treatment injures. Hospitals that performed the largest number of reconstructions/year had the smallest risk of a treatment injury (p < 0.001). The total compensation was 7.6 m EURO, which equals 243 EURO/performed knee ligament reconstruction., Conclusion: Treatment injuries as defined in this study were rare, with tunnel malpositioning being the most common. Analyses of the results indicate that it may be clinically relevant to reduce the number of treatment injures that knee ligament reconstructions are concentrated in clinics with high volume. Also, malpositioning might be reduced by routine documentation of K-wire position before tunnels are drilled., Level of Evidence: III.

Background: Glioma is the most common primary brain tumor and is believed to arise from glial stem cells. Despite large efforts, there are limited established risk factors. It has been suggested that tissue with more stem cell divisions may exhibit higher risk of cancer due to chance alone. Assuming a positive correlation between the number of stem cell divisions in an organ and size of the same organ, we hypothesized that variation in intracranial volume, as a proxy for brain size, may be linked to risk of high-grade glioma., Methods: Intracranial volume was calculated from pretreatment 3D T1-weighted MRI brain scans from 124 patients with high-grade glioma and 995 general population-based controls. Binomial logistic regression analyses were performed to ascertain the effect of intracranial volume and sex on the likelihood that participants had high-grade glioma., Results: An increase in intracranial volume of 100 mL was associated with an odds ratio of high-grade glioma of 1.69 (95% CI: 1.44‒1.98; P < 0.001). After adjusting for intracranial volume, female sex emerged as a risk factor for high-grade glioma (odds ratio for male sex = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.33‒0.93; P = 0.026)., Conclusions: Intracranial volume is strongly associated with risk of high-grade glioma. After correcting for intracranial volume, risk of high-grade glioma was higher in women. The development of glioma is correlated to brain size and may to a large extent be a stochastic event related to the number of cells at risk.

Aims/hypothesis: The aim of this study was to compare cognitive function in adults with type 1 diabetes who have impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia with those who have normal awareness of hypoglycaemia. A putative association was sought between cognitive test scores and a history of severe hypoglycaemia., Methods: A total of 68 adults with type 1 diabetes were included: 33 had impaired and 35 had normal awareness of hypoglycaemia, as confirmed by formal testing. The groups were matched for age, sex and diabetes duration. Cognitive tests of verbal memory, object-location memory, pattern separation, executive function, working memory and processing speed were administered., Results: Participants with impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia scored significantly lower on the verbal and object-location memory tests and on the pattern separation test (Cohen's d -0.86 to -0.55 [95% CI -1.39, -0.05]). Participants with impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia had reduced planning ability task scores, although the difference was not statistically significant (Cohen's d 0.57 [95% CI 0, 1.14]). Frequency of exposure to severe hypoglycaemia correlated with the number of cognitive tests that had not been performed according to instructions., Conclusions/interpretation: Impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia was associated with diminished learning, memory and pattern separation. These cognitive tasks all depend on the hippocampus, which is vulnerable to neuroglycopenia. The findings suggest that hypoglycaemia contributes to the observed correlation between impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia and impaired cognition.

Background and Purpose: The intracranial volume is commonly used for correcting regional brain volume measurements for variations in head size. Accurate intracranial volume measurements are important because errors will be propagated to the corrected regional brain volume measurements, possibly leading to biased data or decreased power. Our aims were to describe a fully automatic SPM-based method for estimating the intracranial volume and to explore the practical implications of different methods for obtaining the intracranial volume and normalization methods on statistical power., Materials and Methods: We describe a method for calculating the intracranial volume that can use either T1-weighted or both T1- and T2-weighted MR images. The accuracy of the method was compared with manual measurements and automatic estimates by FreeSurfer and SPM-based methods. Sample size calculations on intracranial volume-corrected regional brain volumes with intracranial volume estimates from FreeSurfer, SPM, and our proposed method were used to explore the benefits of accurate intracranial volume estimates., Results: The proposed method for estimating the intracranial volume compared favorably with the other methods evaluated here, with mean and absolute differences in manual measurements of -0.1% and 2.2%, respectively, and an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.97 when using T1-weighted images. Using both T1- and T2-weighted images for estimating the intracranial volume slightly improved the accuracy. Sample size calculations showed that both the accuracy of intracranial volume estimates and the method for correcting the regional volume measurements affected the sample size., Conclusions: Accurate intracranial volume estimates are most important for ratio-corrected regional brain volumes, for which our proposed method can provide increased power in intracranial volume-corrected regional brain volume data., (© 2015 by American Journal of Neuroradiology.)

To date, there is no consensus whether sexual dimorphism in the size of neuroanatomical structures exists, or if such differences are caused by choice of intracranial volume (ICV) correction method. When investigating volume differences in neuroanatomical structures, corrections for variation in ICV are used. Commonly applied methods are the ICV-proportions, ICV-residuals and ICV as a covariate of no interest, ANCOVA. However, these different methods give contradictory results with regard to presence of sex differences. Our aims were to investigate presence of sexual dimorphism in 18 neuroanatomical volumes unrelated to ICV-differences by using a large ICV-matched subsample of 304 men and women from the HUNT-MRI general population study, and further to demonstrate in the entire sample of 966 healthy subjects, which of the ICV-correction methods gave results similar to the ICV-matched subsample. In addition, sex-specific subsamples were created to investigate whether differences were an effect of head size or sex. Most sex differences were related to volume scaling with ICV, independent of sex. Sex differences were detected in a few structures; amygdala, cerebellar cortex, and 3rd ventricle were larger in men, but the effect sizes were small. The residuals and ANCOVA methods were most effective at removing the effects of ICV. The proportions method suffered from systematic errors due to lack of proportionality between ICV and neuroanatomical volumes, leading to systematic mis-assignment of structures as either larger or smaller than their actual size. Adding additional sexual dimorphic covariates to the ANCOVA gave opposite results of those obtained in the ICV-matched subsample or with the residuals method. The findings in the current study explain some of the considerable variation in the literature on sexual dimorphisms in neuroanatomical volumes. In conclusion, sex plays a minor role for neuroanatomical volume differences; most differences are related to ICV.

Introduction: Computerized neuropsychological tests are effective in assessing different cognitive domains, but are often limited by the need of proprietary hardware and technical staff. Web-based tests can be more accessible and flexible. We aimed to investigate validity, effects of computer familiarity, education, and age, and the feasibility of a new web-based self-administered neuropsychological test battery (Memoro) in older adults and seniors., Method: A total of 62 (37 female) participants (mean age 60.7 years) completed the Memoro web-based neuropsychological test battery and a traditional battery composed of similar tests intended to measure the same cognitive constructs. Participants were assessed on computer familiarity and how they experienced the two batteries. To properly test the factor structure of Memoro, an additional factor analysis in 218 individuals from the HUNT population was performed., Results: Comparing Memoro to traditional tests, we observed good concurrent validity (r = .49-.63). The performance on the traditional and Memoro test battery was consistent, but differences in raw scores were observed with higher scores on verbal memory and lower in spatial memory in Memoro. Factor analysis indicated two factors: verbal and spatial memory. There were no correlations between test performance and computer familiarity after adjustment for age or age and education. Subjects reported that they preferred web-based testing as it allowed them to set their own pace, and they did not feel scrutinized by an administrator., Conclusions: Memoro showed good concurrent validity compared to neuropsychological tests measuring similar cognitive constructs. Based on the current results, Memoro appears to be a tool that can be used to assess cognitive function in older and senior adults. Further work is necessary to ascertain its validity and reliability.

In rodents representations of environmental positions follow a granularity gradient along the hippocampal and entorhinal anterior-posterior axis; with fine-grained representations most posteriorly. To investigate if such a gradient exists in humans, functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired during virtual environmental learning of the objects' positions and the association between the objects and room geometry. The Objects-room geometry binding led to increased activation throughout the hippocampus and in the posterior entorhinal cortex. Within subject comparisons related specifically to the level of spatial granularity of the object position encoding showed that activation in the posterior and intermediate hippocampus was highest for fine-grained and medium-grained representations, respectively. In addition, the level of fine granularity in the objects' positions encoded between subjects correlated with posterior hippocampal activation. For the anterior hippocampus increased activation was observed for coarse-grained representations as compared to failed encoding. Activation in anterior hippocampus correlated with the number of environments in which the objects positions were remembered when permitting a coarse representation of positions. In the entorhinal cortex, activation in the posterior part correlated with level of fine granularity for the objects' positions encoded between subjects, and activation in the posterior and intermediate entorhinal cortex increased for medium-grained representations. This demonstrates directly that positional granularity is represented in a graded manner along the anterior-posterior axis of the human hippocampus, and to some extent entorhinal cortex, with most fine-grained positional representations posteriorly., (© 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

The objective of the current study was to determine long-term test-retest reliability of the P3 NoGo wave as well as two independent components (IC P3 NoGo early and IC P3 NoGo late) decomposed from this wave by independent component analysis (ICA). For this purpose 19-channel EEG was recorded during a cued visual Go/NoGo task. First, spatial filters of the two independent components (ICs) were obtained by application of ICA to ERPs of 102 healthy adults. Second, in 26 individuals, ERPs were recorded from the same task a second time 6-18 months after the first recording. Statistical analyses were performed on both the P3 NoGo waves and the activation curves of the two ICs from both recordings. Amplitude and latency were estimated by "peak" and "fractional area" (FA) methods for both the P3 NoGo wave and ICs. Intraclass correlations (ICC) for latency were excellent (ICC>.90) for both the P3 NoGo wave and the two ICs when measured with the FA method, and good (ICC>.75) for amplitude measured by both methods (FA or peak). We conclude that the long-term stability of P3 NoGo wave and the two IC makes them well suited for reliable assessment of cognitive control function in research and clinic., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
