Abstract

We re-examine the effect of long-range Coulomb interactions on the collective amplitude and phase modes in the incommensurate charge-density-wave ground state of quasi-one-dimensional conductors. Using an effective action approach we show that the longitudinal acoustic phonon protects the gapless linear dispersion of the lowest phase mode in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. Moreover, in Gaussian approximation, amplitude fluctuations are not affected by long-range Coulomb interactions. We also calculate the collective mode dispersions at finite temperatures and compare our results with the measured energies of amplitude and phase modes in K$_{0.3}$MoO$_3$. With the exception of the lowest phase mode, the temperature dependence of the measured mode energies can be quantitatively described within a multi-phonon Fr\"{o}hlich model for generic electron-phonon interactions neglecting long-range Coulomb interactions.

Abstract

Master-field simulations offer an approach to lattice QCD in which calculations are performed on a small number of large-volume gauge-field configurations. The latter is advantageous for simulations in which the global topological charge is frozen due to a very fine lattice spacing, as the effect of this on observables is suppressed by the spacetime volume. Here we make use of the recently developed Stabilised Wilson Fermions to investigate a variation of this approach in which only the temporal direction ($T$) is taken larger than in traditional calculations. As compared to a hyper-cubic lattice geometry, this has the advantage that finite-$L$ effects can be useful, e.g. for multi-hadron observables, while compared to open boundary conditions, time-translation invariance is not lost. In this proof-of-concept contribution, we study the idea of using very cold (i.e. long-$T$) lattices to topologically "defrost" observables at fine lattice spacing. We identify the scalar-scalar meson two-point correlation function as a useful probe and present first results from $N_f=3$ ensembles with time extents up to $T=2304$ and a lattice spacing of $a=0.055\,\rm{fm}$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, to be published in Proceedings of Science, contribution to "The 39th International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory (LATTICE 2022)"

3. Phonon renormalization and Pomeranchuk instability in the Holstein model

Abstract

The Holstein model with dispersionless Einstein phonons is one of the simplest models describing electron-phonon interactions in condensed matter. A naive extrapolation of perturbation theory in powers of the relevant dimensionless electron-phonon coupling $\lambda_0$ suggests that at zero temperature the model exhibits a Pomeranchuk instability characterized by a divergent uniform compressibility at a critical value of $\lambda_0$ of order unity. In this work, we re-examine this problem using modern functional renormalization group (RG) methods. For dimensions $d > 3$ we find that the RG flow of the Holstein model indeed exhibits a tricritical fixed point associated with a Pomeranchuk instability. This non-Gaussian fixed point is ultraviolet stable and is closely related to the well-known ultraviolet stable fixed point of $\phi^3$-theory above six dimensions. To realize the Pomeranchuk critical point in the Holstein model at fixed density both the electron-phonon coupling $\lambda_0$ and the adiabatic ratio $\omega_0 / \epsilon_F$ have to be fine-tuned to assume critical values of order unity, where $\omega_0$ is the phonon frequency and $\epsilon_F$ is the Fermi energy. On the other hand, for dimensions $d \leq 3$ we find that the RG flow of the Holstein model does not have any critical fixed points. This rules out a quantum critical point associated with a Pomeranchuk instability in $d \leq 3$., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

An extensive literature search to identify and collect studies related to the toxicity of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and brominated phenols (BPs) was performed in the three databases PubMed, Web of Science and SciFinder® for four Areas. After combination of the searches from the three databases and removal of the duplicates, the total number of references for Area 1 was 6,231, for Area 2 was 8,236, for Area 3 was 4,994 and for Area 4 was 6,363. The evaluation of all retrieved references for relevance by screening the title and abstract (if available) and applying eligibility criteria (inclusion/exclusion) resulted in a total number of relevant references for Area 1 of 378 (PBDEs), 46 (TBBPA) and 29 (BPs), for Area 2 of 188 (PBDEs), 37 (TBBPA) and 4 (BPs), for Area 3 of 518 (PBDEs), 180 (TBBPA) and 49 (BPs), and for Area 4 of 717 (PBDEs), 59 (TBBPA) and 18 (BPs).

Abstract

In recent years, a great intensification in the use of various elements especially in modern technology can be observed. However, the anthropogenic activities, including industrialisation, urbanisation or intensive agriculture, have led to the release of many of the elements into the environment. The consequence of the accumulation of the elements both in soil and water systems is their presence in the food chain. Inhalation and consumption of the contaminated food and beverages have been indicated as the main pathways of the exposure to many elements. Due to the fact, that tea is considered the second most popular beverage worldwide and its consumption is constantly increasing, it is crucial to evaluate the safety of the product, especially for toxic elements contamination. Thus, the aim of the project was to evaluate the contamination levels of rare earth elements (REEs) including lanthanides, scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y) and also antimony (Sb), barium (Ba), boron (B), lithium (Li), tellurium (Te), thallium (Tl) and vanadium (V) in teas. Subsequently, the risk assessment was carried out. Additionally, the Fellowship provided hands-on training on the evaluation of applications of new biocides and participation in the science-based advises given to the Danish Food and Veterinary Administration, Danish Environment Protection Agency and Danish Medical Agency.

Abstract

The world production of marine macroalgae, or seaweed, has more than tripled since the turn of the millennium, increasing from 10.6 million tonnes in 2000 to 32.4 million tonnes in 2018. Increased cultivation and utilization of seaweed are expected to be important pillars of sustainable food security and a robust aquatic economy in the coming years. It is important, therefore, to consider the food safety implications of (increased) seaweed use for food. Many factors can affect the presence of hazards in seaweed, including: the type of seaweed, its physiology, the season in which it is produced, production waters, harvesting methods and processing. Several hazards such as heavy metals and marine biotoxins have been reported to be (potentially) associated with seaweed. However, legislation and guidance documents on the production and utilization of seaweed are generally still lacking. FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO) have therefore developed this report to identify food safety hazards (microbiological, chemical and physical) linked to the consumption of seaweed and aquatic plants. The present analysis could therefore provide a basis for undertaking further work in this area. Moreover, both FAO and WHO believe that there would be a value in developing relevant Codex guidance on this subject.

Abstract

Sewage sludge is widely used as an organic fertilizer, but also presents several risks to environmental and human health. This chapter presents a quantitative environmental risk assessment (ERA) and a qualitative human health risk assessment associated with farmland application of sewage sludge as compared to cattle and pig slurry. The analysis reflects conditions pertaining to Denmark, and neighboring European countries. The quantitative ERA was performed by estimating the cumulative risk of 138 (sludge) or 20 (slurry) identified contaminants 6 months after the 100th year of application. Environmental risk was quantified as the ratio of the predicted environmental concentration (PEC) divided by the predicted no effect concentration (PNEC). PEC/PNEC was 2–3 for sewage sludge and cattle slurry, whereas it was 8 for pig slurry. Metal compounds (especially Zn and Cu) accounted for the majority (>50%) of the environmental risk associated with farmland application of animal slurries, whereas phthalates and triclocarban collectively accounted for more than 50% of the corresponding risk associated with sewage sludge. Human health risks via dietary exposure to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and pharmaceuticals in food crops were concluded not to cause any reason for concern. Based on reviewed literature, we further conclude that Danish sewage sludge does not represent a higher risk than animal manure for environmental dissemination of antibiotic resistance. Overall, it is concluded that sewage sludge from contemporary Danish society does not constitute a higher risk to soil organisms or human health than pig slurry.

An extensive literature search to identify and collect studies related to the toxicity of grayanotoxins and 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (5‐HMF) was performed in the three databases PubMed, Web of Science and SciFinder® for six and four Areas, respectively. After combination of the searches from the three databases and removal of the duplicates, the total number of references for the grayanotoxins was 652 and for 5‐HMF Area 1b was 3,862, for Area 2b was 37, for Area 3b was 221 and for Area 4b was 500. 39. Dietary exposure to selected chemical contaminants in fish for the Danish population

Abstract

The exposure to selected chemical contaminants from fish has been calculated for the Danish population, both for adults (15–75 years of age) and children (4–14 years of age). The Danish mean consumption of fish is 21 g person−1 day−1 for adults and 12 g person−1 day−1 for children. Fish consumption is the main food group contributor for exposure to mercury and dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCDD/F and DL-PCB) for the Danish population. Comparison of the mean exposure with the TDI or TWI values shows for these substances as well as for perfluorooctane sulphuric acid (PFOS) that the exposure is below the TDI/TWI values. However, even without taking other food groups into account, PCDD/Fs and DL-PCB exposure is close to the actual TWI-value. Calculation of the Margin of Exposure (MOE) for the sum of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDD) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) revealed fish consumption to be of low concern for the consumer health regarding these contaminants.

41. Risikovurdering vedr afsmitning med lægemiddelrester fra 'bivoks-indpakningspapir'/bivoks-stykker

De tyske myndigheder har undersøgt et fødevarekontaktmateriale med bivoks til indpakning af fødevarer og fundet afsmitning af to veterinære lægemidler som benyttes til behandling af bier mod varoamider. Der er påvist følgende indhold i migrationstest: Coumaphos 0,030 +/-0,015 mg/L migrat Tau-Fluvalinat: 0,038 +/-0,019 mg/L migrat I den forbindelse har FVST bedt DTU foretage en vurdering af risikoen ved indtag af fødevarer indpakket i indpakningspapiret med bivoks. DTU er specifikt blevet bedt om at inddrage eksperterne i fødevarekontaktmaterialer(FMK) i forhold til vurdering af afsmitning fra FKM.

49. Assessment of risks related to agricultural use of sewage sludge, pig and cattle slurry

Abstract

In April 2017, the Organic Business Development Team released a report with 25 recommendations for the Minister of Environment and Food (Det økologiske erhvervsteam 2017). Among these was a recommendation that organic farmers should have opportunities for utilizing nutrients from treated domestic wastewater for nutrient recycling.A prerequisite for future use of nutrients from treated wastewater is, that quality requirements are met and that application can be explained to (and accepted by) consumers. In partial fulfilment of this, the business team identified a need for a scientific overview of the risks of using nutrients from treated municipal wastewater in relation to other authorized fertilizer sources – e.g. conventional animal manures. Thus, it was assumed that a comparative approach to assess potential risk of using sewage sludge and conventional manures, could usefully inform decision makers in the future regulation of organic farming systems.Dependent on the result of the scientific investigation, the Organic Business Development Team foresaw that Denmark could chose to work to expand Annex 1 of the EU Ecology Regulation, to allow the organic farmers to use nutrients from municipal wastewater or other acceptable derived sludge products. Mobilization of support for this should be done by the Ministry of Environment and Food in collaboration with the Organic Farming Industry.Thus, based on available literature, this report aims at creating an overview of the environmental and human risks associated with application of pig and cattle slurry as well as sewage sludge to agricultural soils. The risk evaluation was performed for the following compound groups: Metals, Chlorophenyls, Dioxins, Furans, Halogenated aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons (HAH), Linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS), Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), Poly- and perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS), Phenols, Phosphate-triestersVII, Phthalates, Polychlorinated naphtalenes (PCN), Polychlorinated alkanes (PCA), Triclosan, Triclocarban, Medicines, Estrogens, Antibiotic resistance genes.Additionally the fertilizer potential of the two nutrient sources was characterized and compared.
